On the 28th o f May, H,If. the Queen Mother, as C h a n o e l l o r , w i l l a r r i v e a t the I m p e r i a l O o l l e g e Union a t 3 p.m. There w i l l be a s h o r t ceremony i n the Concert H a l l , d u r i n g whioh the C h a n c e l l o r w i l l d e c l a r e t h e Roderio H i l l B u i l d i n g open and she w i l l then prooeed by way o f t h e B e i t Garden (as th e Quadrangle w i l l then be); a c r o s s P r i n c e Consort Road to the R o d e r i c H i l l B u i l d i n g . Here she w i l l u n v e i l a plaque i n memory of the L a t e S i r Roderto H i l l . a n d w i l l i n spect the new b u i l d i i g . . She w i l l r e t u r n t o the Union f o r t e a i n t h e D i n i n g H a l l , and w i l l l e a v e a t about 5 p.m. A committee o f the Governing Body has been s e t up t o c o n s i i e r the arrangements. The committee has approved the f o l l o w i n g p r o p o s a l s , which i s hoped w i l l enable as many people as p o s s i b l e t o p a r t i c i p a t e i n one wav or another.

S e v e r a l c o m f o r t a b l e armchairs, almost i n d i s t i n g u i s h a b l e f r o m t h e b a r s t o o l s , h a v e f o u n d new homes i n v a r i o u s p a r t s o f t h e U n i o n and h o s t e l s .

D u r i n g t h e i r p e r f o r m a n c e t h e y were' o f f e r e d a j o b p l a y i n g f o r the r e s t o f the evening In a coffee bar. This they did w i t h great success. 1

When Reggie r e a c h e d U.C.*s gate the Guildsmen s w o o p e d , r e l i e v i n g Kings of t h e i r burden, and t r a n s p o r t e d i t halfway down Malet S t r e e t , whe7.-e,to quote one o f t h e d a i l y newspaperSj, "A midnight f r e e - f o r a l l between 206 s t u d e n t s from London u n i v e r s i t y C o l l e g e s - K i n g s , C i t y and G u i l d s and U n i v e r s i t y - was broken up by t h e p o l i c e a f t e r 20 minutes l a s t n i g h t " . The b e a r d I s a t o n c e t h e m o s t noticeable, obvious, egotistical, e x h i b i t i o n i s t adornment p o s s i b l e and t h e most n a t u r a l t h i n g , i n t h e world. H i s t o r i c a l l y , beards have been r e v e r e d , s a v e d by t h e i r u n f o r t u n a t e owners from the b l o c k ( a l b e i t a t the expense o f t h e i r n e c k s ) - and singed. T h e y h a v e b e e n u s e d t o d i s g u i s e many i n t e n t i o n s from the a n a r c h i c t o the amorous; u s e d t o c o n c e a l d i s f i g u r e d s k i n s , r e c e d i n g c h i n s and t h e i d e n t i t i e s of t h e i r owners. Indeed, the beard i s u s u a l l y r e g a r d e d as a p a r t i c u l a r l y close form of camouflage, which i s the greategt fundamental error i n the ' lay' p u b l i c s beardwise t h i n k i n g . For w h i l s t c o n c e a l i n g the lower h a l f of the f a c e , i t renders the whole of i t immediately r e c o g n i s a b l e . Far from being the gesture o f t h e r e c l u s e and t h e h e r m i t , abandoning t h e r a z o r i s an a c t c a l l i n g f o r the strongest of c h a r a c t e r s , the b r a v e s t o f men. The t o p i c o f H a l l D i n n e r was r a i s e d s e v e r a l times l a s t t e r m , c h i e f l y i n c o n n e c t i o n w i t h b l o c k bookings, which were d e p l o r e d b y many people as b e i n g c o n t r a r y t o the i d e a of H a l l Dinner; * consequently, b l o o k bookings were p r o h i b i t e d , and p r o s p e c t i v e d i n e r s were l i m i t e d t o one guest each. T h i s term, the p o p u l a r i t y of* H a l l Dinner seems t o have dec l i n e d , and attendances have b e e n u n u s u a l l y low; a t t h e titLme o f g o i n g t o p r e s s , even t h e Wine Dinner on February 26th. i s n o t f u l l y booked up! TheR.S.MJSntertainm e n t s C o m m i t t e e u n d e r 9 1 1 S t r e e t h a d made good s e v e r a l of the shortcomings o f the f i r s t New U n i o n C a r n i v a l h e l d a t t h e b e g i n n i n g o f t h e term. The ' S i n - b i n ' J.n t h e m i d d l e o f t h e C o n c e r t H a l l f l o o r c e r t a i n l y b r o k e up t h e p r e v i o u s i m p e r s s o n a l atmosphere and t h e d i s p l a c e m e n t o f one o f t h e ' s n o g g e r i e s i b y a c o n v e n i e n t c o r n e r b a r made d r i n k i n g c o s i e r . GATHERING OF WESTERN EUROPEAN STUDENTS The I n t e r n a t i o n a l M e e t i n g of students r e p r e s e n t i n g u n i v e r s i t y and n a t i o n a l unions from Western Europe was o r g a n i z e d ^ as i n the p a s t , by The Teohnische U n i v e r s i t a t , B e r l i n . There were no p o l i t i c a l , n a t i o n a l o r student, i d e a s behind t h i s meeting, o n l y the exohange o f c o n t a c t s and i d e a s on l i f e i n o t h e r universities. C o n s i d e r i n g the economic and p o l i t i c a l p o s i t i o n o f West B e r l i n , an i n t e r e s t i n The the p o l i t i c a l s i t u a t i o n was i n e v i t a b l e . West B e r l i n e r s are v e r y aonsoious of t h e i r p o s i t i o n i n the. Bast ''est r e l a t i o n s and are eager t h a t as many people as p o s s i b l e from a l a r g e range of a c t i v i t i e s and c o u n t r i e s should have the o p p o r t u n i t y o f becoming f a m i l i a r w i t h the unique c i t y and country of itest B e r l i n . We stayed i n a Red Cross H o s t e l i n a S. Western suburb o f the c i t y w i t h f i v e students of the A u s s e n r e f e r a t , the C o u n c i l of the Technische U n i v e r s i t a t . E n g l i s h was the o f f i c i a l meating language but I was somewhat dismayed t o f i n d w i t h my meagre knowledge of German,I was the only Englishman t h e r e . The N.U.S. had not even bothered t o r e p l y t o the i n v i t a t i o n and made e x p l a n a t i o n s somewhat I d i f f i c u l t . The programme t h a t had been prepared s t r u o k a f i n e balanoe between the s e r i o u s and the d i s t i n c t l y s o c i a l . The day a f t e r we a r r i v e d we t o u r e d the T.U., which had been destroye d d u r i n g the war and i 3 now r e f i t t e d w i t h the b e s t equipment t h a t t h e Germans can o b t a i n . A f i r s t impression i s one of q u i e t and space. Students move about q u i e t l y and although t h e r e are some 6 0 0 0 students a t the T.U., there i s none o f the n o i s e t h a t c h a r a c t e r i s e s the c o r r i d o r s i n I.C. Next day a f t e r a l e o t u r e onthe p o l i t i c a l s i t u a t i o n i n E a s t Germany, ( i n German) we v i s i t e d the f i n e s t equipped brewery i n Europe w i t h s u r e l y the most generous management. The l a s t i n t e l l i g e a b l e comment heard was " W e l l , some F i n n i s h student drank 31 of these bottles". A t o u r o f t h e Grtine Woche show, which i s an a g r i c u l t u r a l e x h i b i t i o n i n West B e r l i n , gave us our f i r s t glimose o f E a s t e r n B e r l i n a r s who were conspicuous w i t h t h e i r i n f e r i o u r olothess. and poor shoes. The E a s t e r n e r s a r e eager t o keep up t o date w i t h progress i n a g r i c u l t u r e and t h i s show g i v e s them adequate opportunity LC.

A d e t a i l e d account of every event i n the packed t e n days i n B e r l i n would be t e d i o u s and,for me,perhaps i n a d v i s a b l e , b u t many v i s i t s such as one t o the Refugee Camp can never be f o r g o t t e n . I t was s u r e l y one of the saddest days when we saw the camp used t o house the refugees who are even now a r r i v i n g at the r a t e o f 3 0 0 a day from B t e r n Zone. To see them i n such circumstances,with no more b e l o n g i n g s than the c l o t h e s they stand i n can mean only one t h i n g i But t h e r e were s m i l e s on most faces which meant hope and r e l i e f f o r many o f those poor people. A v i s i t t o the E a s t e r n S e c t o r of the o i t y made i t abundantly apparent why the seven p r o f e s s o r s and 100 3tudent t h a t s t a r t e d the Free U n i v e r s i t y oame t o the We3t i n l ? l f 7 . S t a t e owned shops, poor c l o t h e s , very few motorcars, many policemen, aunt v e r y l i t t l e r e b u i l d i n g are.the f i r s t s i g h t s t h a t c h a r a c t e r i s e the E a s t . There i s an unusual c o n t r a s t i n the c i t y , i n that the S t a l i n A l l e e , a hugh s t r e e t l i n e d w i t h R u s s i a n type f l a t s and s h o p s , f i l l e d w i t h the b e s t products t h a t the Russian \>loc oan p r o d u c e r s f l a n k e d w i t h s h a t t e r e d and patched b u i l d i n g s . Due t o the exchange r a t e , goods i n the shops are very cheap but Westerners are only a l l o w e d book,j and records which are considered t o have a p./opaganda v a l u e . The B r i t i s h passport always gathered an i n t e r e s t e d crowd of 3hop a s s i s t a n t s who then t r i e d i n French, German o r E n g l i s h t o q u e s t i o n me about l i f e i n the West* a s

A f t e r seeing a p u b l i c i t y f i l m •produced by t h e F r e e German Youth i t was sincouraging t o see t h a t t h e storm of propaganda and i n c i d e n t a l p r e s s u r e s t h a t are b e i n g a p p l i e d t o the yout h of East Germany i s having l i t t l e e f f e c t . Soon,young Germans who have never known l i f e i n the normal sense of the word, i n a f a m i l y , w i t h freedom of speeah and thought, w i l l become the l e a d e r s o f these communist inspired organisations. The l a s t meeting o f C o u n c i l took p l a c e . on February 11th. and l a s t e d f o r about hours. The f o l l o w i n g items o f g e n e r a l i n t e r e s t arose from the meeting. Dates o f Terms At a p r e v i o u s meeting i t had been decided t o p r o t e s t t o the Hoard o f S t u d i e s about t h e sudden changes' i n term times which had occurred t h i s s e s s i o n , c a u s i n g c o n s i d e r a b l e confusion i n t h e f i x t u r e arrangements o f some a t h l e t i c c l u b s . The Board o f S t u d i e s has s i n c e produced a set system f o r f i x i n g these dates which are now known f o r many years ahead. I t was noted w i t h s a t i s f a c t i o n t h a t the Christmas term w i l l n o t extend 30 n e a r l y t o Christmas Day as i t d i d t h i s year, and P o s t O f f i c e work s h o u l d be p a s s i b l e without t a k i n g u n o f f i c i a l l e a v e o f absence. P o s i t i o n o f S e n i o r Common Room i n Union I t was unanimously agreed t h a t t h e present p o s i t i o n o f the 3.0.2'. i s a d e f i n i t e hindrance and a d e t e r r e n t t o the f u l l use o f the b u i l d i n g i n i t s intended f u n c t i o n as a students' Union. The S.C.R. i n the o l d Union Union had caused no t r o u b l e owing t o i t s remote p o s i t i o n a t one end o f the b u i l d i n g . The S.C.R. committee have a c c o r d i n g l y been asked t o c o n s i d e r moving the S.C.R, up t o the s m a l l Lounge o f the t o p f l o o r . T h i s would enable the present S.C.R. and Reading Room t o be l i n k e d as a c o n s i d e r a b l e i n c r e a s e i n student lounge accomodation. The t o p f l o o r lounge i s comparatively remote, and f a r fewer students would need t o use the room as a r i g h t - o f - w a y , owing t o the exi s t e n c e o f a l i f t , the S.C.R. would be e a s i l y accessible from the D i n i n g H a l l . I t was a l s o p o i n t e d out t h a t i n view o f t h e e x c e l l e n t S.C.R. i n the Unwin B u i l d i n g , and the g r e a t d i f f e r e n c e i n 3 t a f f and.stuuent members, the S.C.R. committee might c o n s i d e r moving out of the Union a l t o g e t h e r . Any member o f s t a f f who wishes t o i s e the Union can do so by paying the s u b s c r i p t i o n o f three guineas. There the matter r e s t s u n t i l t h e next meeting o f the S.G.R. committee. ( I t i s , o f c o u r s e , r e a l i s e d t h a t t h e ^ r e s e n t S.C.R. would continue t o be used f o r pre-Dinner sherry i n the evenings, b u t there i s no o b j e c t i o n t o that). J u b i l e e B a l l , Kay 3 1 s t , 9 p.m.-6 a.m. Four hundred double t i c k e t s , ÂŁ1 each, w i l l be on s a l e b e f o r e t h e end o f term. E l a b o r a t e s e c u r i t y measures w i l l be employed t o a v o i d gate-crashers. The r e l a t i v e m e r i t s o f Club hops and Entertainments Committee *ops were dicussed. The Chairman of Entertainments i s t o put f o r w a r d p r o p o s a l s f o r a l t e r i n g the Hopping t o the next C o u n c i l meeting, and the matter w i l l be r e f e r r e d t o a Union meeting b e f o r e b e i n g enforced. Furniture I t was agreed t o p r e s s the c o l l e g e a u t h o r i t i e s t o f u r n i s h the entrance h a l l of the Unwin-butiding as a lounge, f o r use by people who l u n c h i n A y r t o n H a l l , and who have nowhere t o r e l a x a f t e r w a r d s . The l a c k o f comfort and q u a l i t y o f the new lounge f u r n i t u r e gave r i s e t o ' c o n s i d e r a b l e dismay, as t h e Union i s f i n a n c i a l l y r e s p o n s i b l e f o r i t s upkeep. The P r e s i d e n t was asked t o press t h e Union D e c o r a t i o n Committee t o devote p a r t o f i t s remaining funds t o the purchase o f s t r o n g and comfortable f u r n i t u r e f o r the lounge, the present c h a i r s t o be moved elsewhere. E x p l o r a t i o n Board The E x p l o r a t i o n Board r e p o r t e d t h a t arrangements were w e l l under way f o r the itarakoram E x p e d i t e r t o take p l a c e t h i s summer; t h e long-delayed permit t o e n t e r Kashmir was expected soon. Places, t o be v i s i t e d i n the near f u t u r e i n c l u d e the G o l d Coast and The Outer Hebrides; i n any case, one major e x p e d i t e s would be arranged every f i v e years t o encourage smaller expeditions. New H o s t e l s I t was r e p o r t e d t h a t p l a n s f a r P r i n c e s Gardens were p r o g r e s s i n g as w e l l and q u i c k l y as r e d tape would a l l o w , b u t the C o l l e g e wished the d e t a i l s t o remain c o n f i d e n t i a l f o r the time b e i n g .

S e v e r a l members jumped the coach a t Pen-y-Gwryd t o b r a v e the e l e m e n t s i n t h e L l a n b e r l s P a s s and Snowdon. The r e s t c o n t i n u e d u n t i l the c o a c h h a d t o be a b a n d o n e d a b o u t t h r e e m i l e s f r o m t h e h u t where a s h a r p c o r n e r p r e v e n t e d any f u r t h e r p r o g r e s s . The h u t was f i n a l l y r e a c h e d a t a b o u t 4 am,a l l w e r e s o o n a s l e e p . The h u t b e l o n g s to S t . Mary's Hosp. C l i m b i n g C l u b a n d despite t h e i r assurances of holding 35 ' w i t h c o m f o r t , ' e v e r y s q u a r e i n c h was u s e d t o a c c o m m o d a t e 25. ?

On S a t . 1 6 t h . F e b , I.C.B.C. f i r s t two e i g h t s v i s i t e d C l a r e C o l l e g e Cambridge. The s e c o n d e i g h t ' s w e n t o u t f i r s t , t h e o t h e r o a r s m e n r e g a i n i n g on t h e b a n k pushing b i c y c l e s . R o w i n g o n t h e Cam was a new a n d p l e a s a n t e x p e r i e n c e b u t the.LC. b o a t soon showed t h e i r pace. In a m i n a t u r e 'bumping r a c e ' t h e s e c o n d e i g h t s o o n c a u g h t a n d bumped t h e C l a r e second eight. I n a 4^-minute s i d e - b y s l d e r a c e t h e LC. e i g h t t o o k a g o o d two l e n g t h s f r o m t h e home c r e w . The f i r s t e i g h t i n t h e i r o u t i n g a l s o had b e t t e r pace than the C l a r e f i r s t boat. A l t h o u g h t h e s e two e i g h t s did not race i n the t r u e sense o f the w o r d , t h e I C . e i g h t won a m o r a l v i c t o r y by k e e p i n g i n f r o n t o f the C l a r e boat a n d b u i l d i n g up a l e a d . We a r e now a p p r o a c h i n g t h e p a r t o f the s e a s o n when t h e f i n a l positions i n t h e U n i v e r s i t y L e a g u e s w i l l be d e c i d ed. A f t e r i t s f i r s t l e a g u e d e f e a t by UC. i n the p r e m i e r d i v i s i o n , t h e 1 s t . X I has gone on t o g a i n two c o n v i n c i n g v i c t o r i e s o v e r S i r J o h n C a s s and G o l d s m i t h s College. These v i c t o r i e s were most encouraging,not o n l y from the p o i n t of view of the g o a l s scored,but a l s o i n the improvement of c o o r d i n a t i o n w i t h i n t h e team w i t h w i n g - h a l v e s L e a d b e t t e r
