We await w i t h i n t e r e s t the u n v e i l i n g of the h i e r o g l y p h i c s above the f r o n t entrance. I t i s rumoured that these mysterious symbols were copi e d from the notes of an emminent p r o f • * essor,but then had t o be changed because some of the fundamental equations were incorrec t We note w i t h s u r p r i s e that the new Phoenix i s to be on s a l e on time. We hope t h a t the standard o f the a r t i c l e s i s an improvement on l a s t years r a t h e r u n i n s p i r i n g e f f o r t , f o r , i f not. the average student may w e l l spend hi s l / 6 d on more mundane t h i n g s . We hear that Kr.Kooney,our r e s p e c t ed r e f e c t o r y manager,spent p a r t of h i s summer h o l i d a y s on a y a c h t , s a i l i n g i n the E n g l i s h Channel. Apparently he i n tended t o v i s i t the I s l e of. Wight,but n o t f o r the f i v e days, that i t took to have some damage put r i g h t , t h i s was caused by an ex-miner who, as n a v i g a t o r , thought t h a t the best way to e n c i r c l e the I s l e * o f Wight' was to plow ' s t r a i g h t through-the c o a s t l i n e , l e r h a p s I x . Mooney w i l l commemorate the event by i n t r o d u c i n g a new d e l i c a c y on the r e f e c t o r y menu by the name of " F r i c a s s e d ' I s l e Blanche". George sank f u r t h e r i n t o the corner, h i s hands clasped i n d e s p a i r and the sweat pouring from the furrows i n hi s brow. Only the hammering of h i s heart broke the ear/ s i l e n c e . A new year,a new s e t of freshers,and, perhaps,a new s p i r i t i n the Union* Which b r i n g s us t o the E d i t o r i a l , I t ' s an amazing; t h i n g that ao many oome and so few are seen more t h a n once. When we f i r s t came t o t h i s . college(many years ago now),the combined e f f e c t s o f t h e speeches t h a t the Rector,the P r e s i d e n t o f t h Union and s e v e r a l other people made,was r a t h e r overwhelming and i t was some time b e f o r e we s e t t l e d down. U n f o r t u n a t e l y , t o o many of the f r e s h e r s s t a r t e d o f f cm the wrong f o o t b y t r e a t i n g I.C.as some s o r t of advanced cran school,where knowledge was obtained by p u r e l y mechanical means. They d i d n ' t take advantage o f the enormous, number of c l u b s and s o c i e t i e s (which,by the way,provide f a c i l i t i e s f o r e v e r y t h i n g from rugby t o underwater swimming, from Marxism t o C a t h o l i c i s m . ) , s p e n t t h e i r t h r e e years here without t a k i n g any i n t e r e s t i n the Union,and disappeared, half-educated,'into the l a r g e r f i e l d of life,"uwept,unhonoured and unsung." T h i s s t i l l happens. The main end,of oourse,of a U n i v e r s i t y eduoation i s the o b t a i n i n g o f a degree. But t h i s i s by no means t h e o n l y end, A U n i v e r s i t y must"claim,not o n l y t h a t i t i s e n t i t l e d t o grant c e r t i f i c a t e s o f academi c standard,but a l s o t h a t i t ' s graduates are o f a o e r t a i n worth i n other f i e l d s them the a c a d e m i c Those who l a y the onus o f student apathy on the c o l l e g e authori t i e s are,we f e e l , m i s d i r e c t e d . Only t h e i n d i v i d u a l can make the d e c i s i o n as t o wether he s h a l l broaden h i s outlook o r narrow i t , e n d no ammount o f " c u l t u r e " w i l l f o r c e him t o broaden i t i f he decides otherwise. T h i s point,we feel,needs s t r e s sing. Lear S i r , Every alternate Friday last session I was greeted by a rotund,redfaced i n d i v d u a l w i t h a l a r g e v o i c e and a large beard,who t r i e d to s e l l me a P e l i x . At lunch-time we had an A i l American, Eas t-ÂŁ2nd iNewsvendor who pract i s e d the mating c a l l of the hyena as he t r i e d t o boost the c?.ls3 of h i s rag. This unkemct,unshaven, iunwashed, undressed,gibbering maniac,took i t as a personal a f f r o n t i f one d i d not purchase a P e l i x . But t h i s was not my only reason f o r not buying P e l i x . Being of Scott i s h a n c e s t r y , I n a t u r a l l y examine anything f o r which I am expected to pay lfd,to see i f i t i s worth that much. I f e a r t h a t P e l i x i s not. The sports coverage i n P e l i x i s u s u a l l y 10 days out of date. The comment and l e t t e r s u s u a l l y cover some i n t e r m i n a b l e p o l i t i c a l wrangle i n the r a t - r a c e f o r the Union D i c t a t o r s h i p . The gossip column i 3 concerned e n t i r e l y w i t h people who l i v e i n the Hostel,and most of them are unknown to me. 1 appreciate that covering a l l the news i n College i s very d i f f i c u l t . A f t e r the end of the Summer Term the C r i c k e t Club made t h e i r Annual s o r t i e i n t o the West Country, I f one reads -the o f f i c i a l r e p o r t i t might be thought that t h i s wa3 j u s t another t o u r i n g s i d e i n t e n t on p l a y ing the game. A l l tha t appeared i n the record book i s : played 8 Won 4 Drawn 2 L o s t 2. However F e l i x , a f t e r s u i t a b l y b r i b i n g unwary members, i s able to t e l l you the i n s i d e s t o r y . On the f i r s t n i g h t i n j u r y s t r u c k the s i d e . harry Moss, the demon bowler from Burnley, cracked h i s c o l l a r bone. U n f o r t u n a t e l y t h i s d i d not hu>pen l u a death or g l o r y attempt a t a catch. I t happened when he f e l l from a d r a i n p i p e as he was attempting to r a i d A l Fawp'ett'a room w i t h i n t e n t to remove s a i d gentleman's moustache. By the t h i r d day the team recovered from the shock, and John preede stunned" the l o c a l s by t a k i n g 4 wickets, w i t h h i s f i r s t 4 b a l l 3 - needless to say I.C. won. On the f i f t h n i s h t the team were s t i l l c e l e b r a t i n g . Skipper Logan, w i t h an u n u s u a l l y magnanimous gesture, strode i n t o the bar and set up j pinto Unfortunately no-one e l s e of shandy. turned up and A l a n was seen some hours l a t e r e n q u i r i n g f o r the t r a i n f o r Middlesbrough. P a u l Davies, not to be outdone by h i s Captain, wa3 s t i l l drunk on the 6 t h day. While t r y i n g to take a b a l l behind the wicket he somehow managed to head the b a l l f o r if byes only a y a r d s h o r t of 6. By the 8 t b day the team nnna^ed to sober up and were rewarded by a c h i e v i n g a f i n e v i c t o r y over Torquay.
I t i s not o f t e n tha t one oan s i t back and c l a i m to have done the best passible. Last Session the C o l l e g e w Hockey, Socoer and Rugby F o o t b a l l teams p u l l e d o f f a unique achievement i n the s p o r t i n g h i s t o r y of the U n i v e r s i t y by winning the " T r i p l e Crown" f o r the three major U n i v e r s i t y ' Cup Competitions. So one oan say immediately we can not hope to do b e t t e r ; but we oan hope t o repeat the suooess. With e x c e l l e n t f a c i l i t i e s f o r t r a i n i n g , the h i g h c l a s s o p p o s i t i o n the College name and past r e p u t a t i o n With e x c e l l e n t f a c i l i t i e s f o r t r a i n i n g , the h i e h c l a s s o p p o s i t i o n the College name and past record can demand, and the enthusiasm i n j e c t e d i n t o each c l u b by i t s o f f i c i a l s there i s no reason why anyone should not p l a y a f u l l p a r t i n m a i n t a i n i n g the h i g h standard set by our'predecessors. U n f o r t u n a t e l y only about J O i of the C o l l e g e take any a c t i v e p a r t i n games. There are many s p o r t s c l u b s i n the C o l l e g e , each c a t e r i n g f o r a l l standards from beginners t o experts. I f you do not i n t e n d t o take take the game too s e r i o u s l y , you may l i k e t o p l a y f o r one of the 'Sport Teams', although rumour has i t that g e t t i n g a p l a c e i n the B.3s or 7 t h team i s now harder than g e t t i n g i n t o the f i r s t team. Once again the I.C. Water Polo Club w i t h i t s f i s h - e m u l a t i n g f r a t e r n i t y , went West t h i s summer. Although the object was to p l a y water p o l o , the unorthodox t r a i n i n g i n the e q u a l i s i n g of i n t e r i o r and e x t e r i o r h y d r o s t a t i c pressures played havoc w i t h the team. The f i r s t match, a g a i n s t \ Weymouth, was played o f f the end of the pier at high tide, and we l o s t 5-4. The c o l d water and s l i g h t sunburn brought about our defeat. Amusement wa3 caused by B r i a n Hart l e a v i n g the p i t c h at h a l f time t o p i n up h i s t r u n k s , The f o l l o w i n g evening we played B r i d p o r t , won by a handsome margin and adjourned t o a l o c a l pub. Here one of the gentlemen, not l i k i n g the l o c a l beer, drank c i d e r . C a t a s t r o p h i c a l l y as i t turned out. A f t e r pursuing a French g i r l to a caravan s i t e , he a r r i v e d back ill. He s a i a next morning that he just wanted to d i e the n i g h t before. How near he «>3 t o being tipped out of the window, he' L l never know. T r a v e l l i n g to Dartmouth R.K.C. v i a Exmouth, we had our f i r s t swimming match, which we l o s t , t a k i n g our c u s t omary p o s i t i o n s of 2nd and 4 t h i n eaoh race. We won the polo match. This brought us to our toughest fixture. Ilfracombe. A monumental defeat was the r e s u l t , of the order 18-1.. We l e f t Ilfracombe." The l a s t match, which provided the f i n a j . to the t o u r , and the l o c a l oernival, was at Mevagissey. A large crowd saw us win ~>-4. Our goalkeeper came i n f o r some c r i t i c i s m from the crowd. That evening much beer was drunk. Our c a p t a i n was seen to be i n v o l v e d w i t h a young woman. But as he's how married, we wont t a l k about t h a t . Better not speak i l l of the dead.
