Sir,

The historical (?) roots of. Christianity

Yours patronisingly, etc. Sir, Having been shown the a r t i c l e i n y o u r c o l lege m a g a z i n e on the ' H i s t o r i c a l r o o t s of r e l i g i o n ' 1 feel I must register m y total disagreement with a l m o s t all the ideas put forward by M r . V e a l l . He appears to have l i m i t e d e x p e r i e n c e of t h e deep-seated origins of r e l i g i o n . It i s n o t a s u b j e c t to b e summed-Up lightly as M r . V e a l l believes b y briefly d i s c u s sing a few historical occurrences. Without delving too d e e p l y into What | regard as the truth i n this matter ('the t r u t h ' a s O s c a r W i l d e so rightly says 'is rarely pure and never simple') so I would merely recommend M r . Veall to read Bethan's ' A n a l y s i s of R e l i g i o n ' b e fore h e d i s c u s s e s this matter again. Rev. D a v i d H a r d i n g .

O n e of t h e m o s t o v e r w h e l m i n g p i e c e s of e v i d e n c e is t h e a c c u r a c y of p r o p h e c y i n the B i b l e , e v e n to t h i s v e r y day. Jesus Christ fulfilled countless messages of prophecy during his life on earth, particularly l u c i d are those c o n c e r n i n g his death and resurrection. T h e e v i d e n c e for Christ's resurrection has never been satisfactorily explained away, despite many attempts. These are d o o m e d to failure, because the facts speak for themselves, they say that J e s u s lis w h o He s a i d H e w a s , t h e S o n of G o d . The facts about C h r i s t are a s s o l i d a s any upon w h i c h w e do our scientific research and yet people still avoid the issue instead of f a c i n g it h e a d o n . T h i s is i n f a c t f u r t h e r e v i dence that Jesus is something special.

Racism Sir, I have just been readi n g a c o p y of t h e r e c e n t ly p u b l i s h e d IC Rag M a g . I feel I must raise m y v o i c e in protest about o n e of t h e a r t i c l e s i n cluded in it. Surely, as 'intelligent' students, w e should be striving to break down the b a r r i e r s o f r a c i a l h a t red, exploitation and were prejudice that created by our ' C o l o n i a l Heritage'. Yet one item in t h e m a g a z i n e ( o n p a g e 22, I believe) blatantly sets out to i n s u l t B l a c k People. I w o n d e r What i m p r e s s i o n of w e s o - c a l led intellectual a n d l i b eral whites this will l e a v e w i t h s o m e of t h e overseas students who are s t u d y i n g at this c o l lege. O.K. Let's all have a good laugh—and let's r a i s e m o n e y for c h a r i t y at t h e s a m e t i m e ; b u t N O T a t t h e e x p e n s e of being definitely uncharitable to oppressed m i n orities. Graham Kerwin.

T h e f i n a l e v i d e n c e is when a man comes into a personal relationship with Christ, then he c a n s a y "I k n o w J e s u s is alive today and loves me". If anyone seriously doubts this w e suggest, before wasting more s p a c e in F e l i x , t h a t t h e y look very carefully at the facts with an open and (for you, All) a truly scientific m i n d . W e welc o m e any bo d y to c o m e a n d talk to us a b o u t t h i s and w e w i l l share with them what we know and have discovered since we asked Jesus Christ into o u r l i v e s a s S a v i o u r and Lord. NATIONALIST He will cajole and threaten the labour leaders in this country into selling out every struggle of the working class in the coming period. Shaping up very fast at the m o m ent is the likelihood of a "nationalist" coalition government composed of the Tory party. Prentice, Jenkins. Shirley Williams and other Labour Party right-wingers. A " r e d s c a r e " will be made with which to frighten the confused middle class into permitting the full scal e use of police and army suppression of the working class. A s this crisis deepens daily that is the vista which is opening up b e f o r » our eyes. A vista of unemployment, poverty, police and army brutality that, as one Wall Street financier put it, "wiH make the 3 0 ' s seem like a summer holiday". Unless, that is, the working class takes the power and establishes socialism, a planned economy, and the systematic removal of poverty which is concomitant with such an increase in the productive forces. Chile isn't just a small "banana republic" thousands of miles away, Chile is capitalism, Chile is inflation, Chile is here in this country. It's no coincidence that the Telegraph talks about a "Chilean solution may have tm be found if the miners don't back d o w n " , when we have all the economic problems here fast approaching Chilean standards that produced Allende, that produced the junta and will be our future unless we build the Workers Revolutionary Party a n d the Young Socialist Student Society right away. A v i d followers of t h e thrill-packed Felix theological debate must find it h a r d t o b e l i e v e that ( i n recent years) t h e m a i n trend i n the relations b e tween Marxists a n d Christians h a s been towards dialogue. 'Since Karl Marx's famous " o p i u m of t h e p e o p l e " phrase h a s been mentioned let u s examine it in c o n t e x t . " R e l i g i o u s suffering is the e x p r e s s i o n o f real suffering a n d a t the same t i m e t h e protest against real suffering. It i s t h e o p i u m of t h e people". Even t h i s is only part of t h e p i c t u r e . A n g e l a Davis h a s pointed o u t that w h i l e Christianity was u s e d to justify slavery in t h e Southern States, to slave a s w e l l as master, it also i n spired t h e revolt o f t h e slaves. A similar dichotomy has appeared in countless peasant revolts in E u r o p e . A n d today, the most respected Christians are surely those such as the Spanish worker-priests or the L a t i n A m e r i c a n p r i e s t

and guerilla leader, Torres, w h o h a v e s a c r i f i c e d their freedom, comfort, a n d e v e n l i v e s t o fight oppression. One, usually the dominant, h a s justified oppression a n d encouraged passivity, acceptance of one's place, d o gooding. T h e other h a s inspired revolt. An attack o n a l l C h r i s t i a n s is, therefore, not very smart. the Unfortunately most vociferous spokesmen for Christianity i n IC b e l o n g to a third trend, the evangelists.
