A l l r e s i d e n t s w i l l a l s o be e x p e c t e d to s i g n a n u n d e r t a k i n g to the a f f e c t that h e w i l l n o t i n t r o duce m a t e r i a l s that a r e l i k e l y to c a u s e e x p l o s i o n s (for e x ample, portable gas c y l i n d e r s ) . T o t h i s a n d , the p r e s i d e n t o f IC Union, Trev P h i l l i p s has been a s k e d to recommend a number of s t u d e n t s w h o w o u l d c o - o p e r a t e w i t h the Warden to e n s u r e s t r i c t a d h e r e n c e to the stipulated conditions. A l l students should receive a l e t t e r from T r e v P h i l l i p s w i t h i n the n e x t two or three d a y s o u t l i n i n g the c o n d i t i o n s under w h i c h t h e y w i l l b e a l l o w -

FLOOD 2 A FLOOD h a s been reported i n o n e o f t h e b a s e m e n t storage rooms o f t h e U n i o n building which i s used, ironi c a l l y enough, by the Underwater C l u b . T h e s o u r c e o f the f l o o d i n g was a joint i n a drain-pipe w h i c h i s e x p o s e d i n the room. It i s u n d e r s t o o d that the j o i n t b l e w o u t under p r e s s u r e d u e to a b l o c k a g e a t the k i t c h e n end of the f r a i n . A p l u m b e r w a s c a l l e d a n d the matter i s now under c o n t r o l . F o r t u n a t e l y for the U n d e r w a t e r C l u b , the storage room i s s p l i t - l e v e l a n d s o mo^t o f t h e i r equipment s u f f e r e d n o damage w h a t s o e v e r from the water.

F o r i t i s a the E a s t e r C o n f e r e n c e at L l a n d u d n o A p r i l 7th - 11th that the e l e c t i o n s for the N a t i o n a l U n i o n of S t u d e n t s E x e c u t i v e w i l l take p l a c e . O n l y those d e l e g a t e s e l e c t e d from e a c h member s t u d e n t s ' u n i o n w i l l be e n t i t l e d to v o t e .
T h i s y e a r the B r o a d L e f t ' s on the N U S E x e c i s b e i n g c h a l l e n g e d by " m o d e r a t e s " who b e l i e v e the N U S s h o u l d be more d e m o c r a t i c i n t h e i r e l e c t i o n s by having a nation-wide secret-ballot. This, they believe, would make NUS truly representative of the students of this country . T h e B r o a d L e f t , i n r e p l y , have s a i d that a n a t i o n - w i d e b a l l o t w o u l d be too v u l n e r a b l e to r i c h s t u d e n t s , for e x a m p l e , who might try to buy their way to power with expensive publicity. A n y w a y , they c o n t i n u e , the N U S h a s b e e n d e v e l o p e d as a federal i n s t i t u t i o n with delegates e l e c t e d from e a c h c o n s t i t u e n t o r g a n i s a t i o n to h e l p d e c i d e p o l i c y at c o n f e r e n c es - i t s h o u l d s t a y that w a y . T h u s a controversy rages, and, as in a l l good c o n t r o v e r s i e s , different s o l -

u t i o n s emerge d e p e n d i n g on w h i c h parti c u l a r c r i t e r i o n for r e s o l u t i o n h a p p e n s to take your f a n c y a t any g i v e n moment. It i s p e r h a p s unfortunate that N e g a tive D e m o c r a c y (ie "because the people do not object to this view, then it is clearly what they really want") c a n o n l y be b e a t e n by a c t i v e p a r t i c i p a t i o n , b e c a u s e , c o n s i d e r i n g the s t a t e of s t u dent a p a t h y , the l a t t e r i s a n o n - s t a r t e r . I believe the only way in which the question of genuine representation can ever be resolved is to hold a nationwide referendum. T h i s would leave no doubts in anyone's minds as to what the students in this country want. Only those who would expect to lose something in a referendum would totally reject the idea.

About fifty c h i l d r e n who came from h o m e s i n C h e l s e a and B a t t e r s e a , r a p i d l y f i n i s h e d the e x c e l l e n t food, a n d set to work p r o v o k i n g the p a t i e n t o r g a n i s m w i t h party w h i s t l e s . N a t u r a l l y the o r g a n i s e r s rose to the b a i t a n d displayed their hidden c h i l d i s h i n s t i n c t s . She reputes the rumour that she w a s ' p u t u p " by the Women in Science G r o u p a l t h o u g h she i s n e v e r t h e l e s s s a member of the group a n d a d v o c a t e s m o s t of i t s p o l i c i e s . S t e l l a a i m s to create greater a w a r e n e s s a m o n g s t the women i n the c o l l e g e i n r e s p e c t of a v a r i e t y of t o p i c s i n c l u d i n g the d i f f i c u l t i e s many women e n c o u n t e r w h e n t r y i n g to get i n d u s t r i a l s p o n s o r s h i p or s i m p l y g e t t i n g a j o b . O n e of her major a i m s i s to a t t r a c t more women to I C .
Angela Aughwaine is in Maths I and comes from Birmingham. She is a keen darts player and when in energetic oen of her more moods she also plays netball. Angela enjoys socialising and took part in the RCSU sketch for the Guilds Revue. She says that she enjoys the life at IC.

About now, Jamie Bell was s e e n s t a g g e r i n g around s h o u t ing (In s c o u s e ) "Ar yer cornin' on a ramp?" T h i s w a s the battle cry to go borrowing s i g n s from the s l e e p y s t r e e t s of t h i s q u a i n t t o w n . A f t e r l a s t y e a r s f r a c a s w i t h the H i g h Sherriff of S u s s e x w e ha d d e c i d e d to be more s e l e c t i v e , s o r e s t a u r a n t s , pubs and the s e a front where our prime o b j e c t ive. H o w e v e r it came to o u r n o t i c e that Mr B r a y s h a w , i n keeping with tradition, should go for a s w i m , d u e l y he w a s e s c o r t e d d o w n the b e a c h a n d thrown into the now i c y s e a . E m e r g i n g he w a s c o u r t e o u s l y w r a p p e d up in c o a t s a n d t a k e n to a nearby s h o p doorway to
r e c o v e r . T h i s a p p e a r e d to be the meeting p l a c e for many of our b a n d , and out of dark c o r n e m s various criminal types appeared with strange shapes under t h e i r c o a t s . T h e c o a c h eventually arrived and we trooped on board, N i c k d i s c o v e r e d he had l ost h i s w a l let s o the c a v a l r y w a s s e n t o u t a n d d u l y returned s u c c e s s f u l l y . A c e r t a i n member, w h o s h a l l remain n a m e l s s , left the c o a c h a n d hung h i s p o s t e r i o r o v e r the s e a w a l l to l e s s e n h i s load then turned around a n d p u k e d on top of the m o u n tain below. B o h L o n g m a n , not to be outdone by N i c k B r a y s h a w , then d e c i d e d to go for a s w i m v o l u n t a r i l y and had to be c a r r i e d b a c k on board the c o a c h . When on the c o a c h he d i d a m a r v e l o u s i m p e r s o n a t i o n of a z o m b i e a s P a t Gorman c h a n g e d his dripping clothes. About

SOCCER With the s e a s o n d r a w i n g to a close IC Football Club can l o o k b a c k w i t h some s a t i s f a c tion on a y e a r o f moderate s u c c e s s . F o r the s e c o n d c o n s e c u t i v e s e a s o n no t r o p h i e s were c o l l e c t e d by any of the teams but the 2 n d X I r e a c h e d the f i n a l of the r e s e r v e s c u p o n l y to be beaten 2-0 by U C I I ' s , a n d the f i r s t X I were runners up i n the p r e m i e r d i v i s i o n to R o y a l H o l l o w a y . In s p i t e o f t h i s s a d l a c k o f glory the s t a n d a r d of f i r s t team f o o t b a l l i n p a r t i c u l ar h a s been very h i g h a n d to come s e c o n d in a l e a g u e w h i c h i s more c o m p e t i t i v e n o w than i t h a s been for a l o n g time i s a fine a c h i e v e m e n t i n itself. T h e race w a s run o v e r 5000m - the metric e q u i v a l e n t o f 3 m i l e s on a w e l l beat en- t art an t r a c k . T h e b a c k s t r a i g h t of the track h a d a c o l d w i n d b l o w i n g s t r a i g h t i n the runners f a c e s , a n d the h a l f i n c h of w a t e r o n some p a r t s of the lower bend d i d not h e l p them e i t h e r . T h e race s t a r t e d promptly at t w o - t h i r t y , w i t h T r a c t o r H o u l b r o o k e somewhat i n j u r e d by e a r l i e r road r e l a y s t a k i n g the t i m e s . A f t e r the f i r st l a p , D a v e J o n e s h a d p u l l e d out a formidable lead, which was s l o w l y w h i t t l e d away by P a u l , R o b a n d H a n k .
