New Mines Mascot T H E R S M U n i o n m e e t i n g on May l s t s a w the u n v e i l i n g of the new M i n e s m a s c o t , presumably s t i l l c a l l e d ' D a v y . ' It s t a n d s o v e r two feet h i g h a n d rumour h a s i t that it w e i g h s o v e r e i g h t y p o u n d s . L i k e the new 'Theta,' RCS Union's m a s c o t , i t i s 100% v i r g n a l at the moment. C u r i o u s l y enough it i s ten y e a r s to the very month s i n c e the o l d ' D a v y ' w a s f i r s t u n v e i l e d i n 1965. B e f o r e that time, the R S M U mascot had been ' G u y ' a M i c h e l i n rubber man w h o h a d been around s i n c e February 1958. C l e a r l y , I C ' s mascots must now be the e n v y of e v e r y other u n i v e r s i t y and c o l l e g e i n the country.

THURSDAY LAST week s a w further I C U e l e c t i o n s a t the U G M for p o s t s o n n e x t year's Union Council. T h e f o l l o w i n g were e l e c t e d a s floor R e p r e s e n t a t i v e s : B i l l Gerrard, Nick Payne, Ann P i c k a r d , R i c k y Graham, P a u l Branthwaite, Steve K i m m i n s . G u y R i g b y w a s e l e c t e d to the p o s t o f S t u d e n t R e s i d e n c e Office and Sunil Mohindra was e l e c t e d a s the C h a i r m a n o f the O v e r s e a s Students C o m m i t t e e . T h e r e have s t i l l b e e n no n o m i n a t i o n s for the p o s t s of Welfare O f f i c e r a n d A c a d e m i c Affairs Officer.
T H E R E F E C T O R Y Committee meeting of May 1st was dominated by the prospect of an enormous catering loss for the year ending July 1975. The running loss was believed to be £39,000 at the end of March hence it is believed that the College will want refectory price increases of the order of 20 — 30% at the end of term. N o r e a l argument t o o k p l a c e s i n c e d e t a i l e d d i s c u s s i o n has been put off u n t i l a s p e c i a l l y convened extraordinary meeting of the c o m m i t t e e n e x t F r i d a y (May 16 t h ) . A l s o to be d i s c u s s e d then are p r o p o s a l s from the C a t e r i n g M a n a g e r , Mr M o o n e y , that the p r i c e s of " b r o u g h t i n " goods s u c h a s meat p i e s , c h i c k e n p i e c e s , yogurt etc should be i n c r e a s e d immediately b e c a u s e the p r o f i t m a r g i n h a s a l l but d i s a p p e a r e d . l t i s k n o w n that I C U n i o n reps on the committee w i l l try to o p p o s e m i d - s e s s i o n a l i n c r e a s e s , but t h e i r c h a n c e s of s u c c e s s are d i m i n i s h e d by the enormity of the c a t e r i n g l o s s . In r e c e n t y e a r s t h i s c a t e r i n g l o s s h a s b e e n c o v e r e d by the s u r p l u s o n the b a r a n d w i n e c e l l a r a c c o u n t s . It i s unders t o o d that t h e s e are e x p e c t e d to be a b o u t £10,000 a n d £6,000 . The shortfall this year is e x p e c t e d to be about £20,000 and t h i s w i l l more than w i p e out a l l r e s e r v e s from p r e v i o u s y e a r s put a s i d e for n e c e s s a r y maintenance and replacement of furniture a n d e q u i p m e n t . T h e m e e t i n g e n d e d w i t h the C a t e r i n g Manager requesting a n i n t e r i m i n c r e a s e of 20 on b e e r s . T h i s w a s to c o v e r the b u d g e t i n c r e a s e of e x c i s e d u t y which the breweries have p a s s e d on to the C o l l e g e . It w a s p o i n t e d out that, o n top this, b r e w e r i e s were of
i n c r e a s i n g prices by 1 — 2p. D a v i d S i n c l a i r , the s t u d e n t C h a i r m a n of the B a r C o m m i t t e e , a r g u e d for not p a s s i n g o n a n y i n c r e a s e at the moment s i m p l y b e c a u s e the s h e e r s i z e of e v e n the i n t e r i m s u g g e s t i o n w o u l d be v e r y d i f f i c u l t to c o v e r on a s t u d e n t i n c o m e . H e is k n o w n to w a n t to h o l d p r i c e s d o w n u n t i l the e n d o f term i f p o s s i b l e . Short s h r i f t w a s g i v e n to t h i s i d e a by the c o m m i t t e e but after h e a t e d argument a n d s u p p o r t from the I C U P r e s i d e n t , T r e v o r P h i l l i p s , Mr S i n c l a i r p r o p o s e d d o i n g n o t h i n g before the e x t r a o r d i n a r y m e e t i n g o n May 16th w i t h the r i d e r that the B a r C o m m i t t e e s h o u l d m e e t i n the m e a n t i m e to make r e c o m m e n d ations. This was accepted. T h e net r e s u l t i s that u n t i l May 1 6 t h , p r i c e s h a v e b e e n f i x e d i n the r e f e c t o r i e s a n d b a r s . M e a n w h i l e , it i s hoped by the U n i o n that a n a n n o u n c e ment of the s i z e of s t u d e n t grants n e x t y e a r w i l l h a v e been made s o that t h i s c a n be u s e d a s a g u i d e l i n e for the s i z e of r e f e c t o r y price i n c r e a s e s . FIRST A N explanation. There was no F E L I X on Wednesday for the simple reason that our main priority this week has been to finish the printing of PHOENIX, the ICU arts magazine'. If we do not get it done in the very near future, then its actual publication will be seriously at risk. Hopefully, the hard grind that has been done in the past few days will bear fruit with the availability of PHOENIX within the next two weeks.
* I was rather puzzled, nay displeased, by the appearance of a memo from the College Registry to self-supporting students (including overseas students) proclaiming the increase of ÂŁ70 in the sessional fees. I understand that THIS I N C R E A S E HAS NOT Y E T B E E N A P P R O V E D BY T H E G O V E RNI NG BODY hence the memo is being blantantly presumptuous. As regards the fee increase itself the Overseas Students Committee is planning action in the form of a petition and possibly a picket of the Governing Body meeting on May 23rd. Anyone interested should contact Chris Kourouniotis in the Maths
Department.

REVIEW: Dramsoc T H E I M P E R I A L C O L L E G E entry in the 20th Sunday T i m e s S t u d e n t s ' D r a m a F e s t i v a l w a s a n e x c e l l e n t p r o d u c t i o n of T o m Stoppard's play 'Albert's Bridge!' T h e a c t i o n moved very s m o o t h l y among a number of s i m p l e s e t s o n the large s t a g e , w i t h the rusty brown s c a f f o l d i n g of 'Albert's bridge a s a c o n s t a n t b a c k d r o p . A l b e r t , a p h i l o s o p h y s t u d e n t turned bridge painter-poet w a s f i n e l y portrayed by E r i c S t o v e l l . H e p l a y e d the w o r d i n t o x i c a t e d Stoppard c h a r a c t e r w i t h p r e c i s i o n a n d a fine s e n s e of the poetic p s e u d o - v i s i o n of t h i s b r i l l i a n t l y - c o n c e i v e d c h a r a c t e r . Mike Stanger and K a r e n W i l l i s w e r e very good a s h i s s u c c e s s f u l father and s u c c e s s oriented mother. T h e f i n a l s c e n e , i n w h i c h a n army of p a i n t e r s a p p r o a c h the b r i d g e , w a s marked by very fine s o u n d e f f e c t s ; and S t o p p a r d ' s v i s i o n of a w o r l d s o c r o w d e d that people c a n o n l y move upwards into t h e h i g h e r r e a c h e s of 'Albert's' b r i d g e is brilliantly conveyed.

T h e p o s i t i o n s of the v a r i o u s teams were read out at i n t e r v a l s d u r i n g the afternoon a n d at about three o ' c l o c k i t b e c a m e o b v i o u s to us that we w e r e s e r i o u s c o n t e n d e r s for the trophy. R e a l i s i n g that every p o i n t mattered at t h i s s t a g e , P e t e J o h n s o n and Ian E l l i s w e r e h u r r i e d l y c o n s c r i p t e d to attempt the p o l e v a u l t , the o n l y p r o b l e m b e i n g n e i t h e r of them h a d s e e n a p o l e - v a u l t pole i n h i s l i f e before,let alone used one. Pete and Ian h a d p r e c i s e l y three goes e a c h to l e a r n to p o l e v a u l t a n d to c l e a r a bar of s i x feet i n height. Pete started first with a brave r u n , but as he s t u c k h i s pole i n , his hands s l i d down the bar a l m o s t to knee h e i g h t . H i s s e c o n d attempt c o m p r i s e d of a f a s t e r run up a n d a f a s t e r s l i d e d o w n the p o l e , and h i s t h i r d attempt w o u l d have done j u s t i c e to a s p r i n t e r , a s he b r e a s t e d the bar, off the p e g s . Ian l i n e d up for h i s j u m p s , ran up, took off a t t a i n e d a p p r o x i m a t e l y 8 5 and promptly f e l l s p r a w l i n g on the g r a s s on the same s i d e of the bar as he took off. H i s s e c o n d attempt s a w h i m c l e a r of the bar but n e g l e c t to l e t go of the p o l e , and the t h i r d attempt s a w h i m c l e a r of the bar to g a i n I C at l e a s t one p o i n t . B y c l e a r i n g the next h e i g h t , a n d f a i l i n g at the one after, Ian managed a c o m m e n d a b l e fifth b e h i n d s u c h p e o p l e a s the B r i t i s h U n i v e r s i t i e s Sports c h a m p i o n (who can jump n e a r l y a s h i g h a s Ian pole-vaulted!) r
