Cat let out of the bag COLLEGE O F F I C I A L S are a n n o y e d a n d p u z z l e d that a n o f f i c i a l report by S i r D a v i d H u d d i e , on s o c i a l s c i e n c e c o u r s e s at I C , w a s l e a k e d to the T i m e s H i g h e r E d u c a t i o n Supplement last week. T h e report, w h i c h i s not due t o be d i s c u s s e d by the B o a r d of S t u d i e s u n t i l next w e e k , h a d at that point o n l y been c i r c u l a t e d to H e a d s o f D e p a r t m e n t s . A c c o r d i n g to T H E S the report i s s a i d to recommend that the t e a c h i n g of s o c i a l s t u d i e s i n undergraduate c o u r s e s 'ought to b e significantly e x p a n d e d ' . In p a r t i c u l a r it recommends the inclusion of management studies, industrial sociology in all and economics undergraduate c o u r s e s . The proposals are no doubt i n t e n d e d to g i v e I C graduates ' a broad unders t a n d i n g of s o c i e t y a n d a g r a s p of m a n a g e r i a l s k i l l s ' . The T H E S article continues "The report considers what has b e e n a v e x e d d i v i s i o n w i t h i n the c o l l e g e b e t w e e n the sociologists i n the Industrial Sociology Unit and the engineers and mixed social scientists o f the management sciences department. T h e point w a s f o r c e f u l l y put to S i r D a v i d that what w a s neede d w a s a unified social science department i n v o l v i n g s o c i o l o gists, economists and psychologists, which would be better e q u i p e d to make a contribution across a whole of undergraduate range courses".

I T WAS r e v e a l e d last week that IC U n i o n h a s been a member of the London Students Organisation ( L S O ) for the l a st 2 y e a r s without a mandate from a Union General Meeting. A s a result of t h i s the U n i o n h a s been p a y i n g a £ 5 0 0 annual subscription to L S O .

replaced the o l d U S K Organisation (University of South K e n s i n g t o n ) .

The news came last F r i d a y a t the J o i n t U n i o n F i n a n c e Committee (UFC), w h i c h d e c i d e d to d e f e r p a y ment o f t h e U n i o n ' s L S O s u b s c r i p t i o n u n t i l the matter has been fully discussed at a U G M . The question of L S O subscriptions h a s , however, been briefly mentioned at previous U F C and C o u n c i l Meetings. A t last year's J o i n t U F C , the i m p r e s s i o n given by outgoing ICU President Trevor Phillips, was that I C U w a s j o i n i n g the West L o n d o n s e c t i o n o f LSO, which he thought

L S O i s now m o v i n g into i t s t h i r d y e a r w i t h Mr P h i l l i p s a s i t s sabbatical secretary. Mr P h i l l i p s has already been i n v i t e d to s p e a k a t t h e U G M . However, it i s Mr P e t e r Teague's considered opinion that t h e m e e t i n g w i l l o v e r whelmingly reject any moves to c o n t i n u e a s members o f LSO. A c c o r d i n g to I C U n i o n External Affairs Officer and next year's Deputy President, Derrick "the M o l e " E v e r e t t , I C h a d not received any significant b e n e f i t from b e i n g members of L S O for the l a s t t w o years. On F r i d a y 4th J u n e , a student c l a i m i n g t o be a R h o d e s i a n , w a l k e d i n t o the U n i o n o f f i c e whose only occupant at the time w a s B i l l G e r r a r d . T h e student, sporting a wet p a t c h dow n the front o f h i s t r o u s e r s , w a n t e d t o s e e the Welfare Officer to borrow some m o n e y . His situation was this; he h a d n o money a n d h i s a r t i f i c i a l bladder h a d burst — h e n c e the w e t p a t c h . A r t i f i c i a l bladders, he i n f o r m e d Mr • G e r r a r d wer e £1 e a c h a n d came i n packs of five. C o u l d he p o s s i b l y borrow £5? H e w a s to r e n d e z v o u s w i t h h i s father o u t s i d e the S c i e n c e Museum at 4.00pm that a f t e r n o o n . H e w o u l d return the loan after collecting some money from h i m . A l a s , Mr G e r r a r d d i d n o t h a v e £5 o n h i s p e r s o n , but a l l w a s n o t l o s t . Mr C h a n c e w a l k e d i n j u s t at that moment. The situation was "explained* to h i m a n d d i d h e h a v e £5JYes. A very relieved looking student collared t h e £5 p r o m i s i n g to return w i t h i t l a t e r that a f t e r n o o n — M r Chance is still awaiting his return..... Mr C h a n c e ' s c l a i m w a s d e n i e d a n d he w a s t o l d to put i t d o w n to e x p e r i e n c e . However, this i s not an isolated incident. Other union officers in London colleges have recently f a l l e n v i c t i m s to con-men of various shades. Mr C h a n c e d i d not h o w e v e r , t a k e a n y c o n s o l a t i o n from t h i s p i e c e of n e w s .

Enthusiastic as ever NOW I N I T S fourth y e a r , I m p e r i a l C o l l e g e Canoe Club is still functioning a s e n t h u s i a s t i c a l l y as e v e r . T h e c l u b i s o r g a n i s e d s o that members c a n become p r o f i c i e n t at c a n o e i n g w h i l s t e n j o y i n g it i n a n y o r a l l o f i t s a s p e c t s : from d r i f t i n g q u i e t l y d o w n a r i v e r a d m i r i n g the s c e n e r y a n d d r i n k i n g c o o l c a n s o f F o s t e r s , t o the more i n s a n e p r a c t i c e o f surfing at Bude under stormy conditions . T h i s y e a r many trips h a v e been made to f a i r l y l o c a l s i t e s ( s u c h a s Shepperton a n d O l d Winsor r i v e r s ) to g a i n p r a c t i c e . In addition to t h e s e d a y or afternoon e x c u r s i o n s , s e v e r a l w e e k e n d t r i p s t o the Upper Wye V a l l e y , the r i v e r U s k and B u d e s e a s i d e h a v e b e e n m a d e . M Y S P I E S t e l l me that a g o o d time may be h a d b y t a k i n g a r i v e r boat d o w n the T h a m e s to G r e e n w i c h . What w i t h the 1776 E x h i b i t i o n , t he C u t t y Sark a n d t he N a v a l C o l l e g e , y o u may f i l l a w h o l e day w i t h s i g h t s e e i n g . W h i l s t I c a n n o t v o u c h for t h i s m y s e l f , I c a n t e l l y o u that the G r e e n w i c h T h e a t r e i s w e l l w o r t h a visit. N e x t w e e k they h a v e e x t e n d e d t h e i r run of t w o n e w p l a y s b y J o h n M o r t i m e r , s t a r r i n g D e n h o l m E l l i o t t , P e t e r Woodthorpe and E l e a n o r B r o n . F e a r o f H e a v e n w a s first broadcast on R a d i o 3 last February and it i s b e c a u s e of t h a t , that I d i d n ' t enjoy it very much. Although a n admirable radio play i t s t r a n s l a t i o n to the stage i s l e s s s u c c e s s f u l for two reasons. F i r s t l y , b e c a u s e the p l o t c o n c e r n s two E n g l i s h m e n w h o w a k e u p , after accidents, i n a Italian hospital with a magnificent Cinguecents ceiling and b e l i e v e t h e m s e l v e s to be i n h e a v e n , the i l l u s i o n that t h e y might p o s s i b l y i m a g i n e t h i s t o be h e a v e n i s s u b s t a n t i a l l y r e d u c e d . W h i l s t t he r a d i o v e r s i o n gave u s a c h a n c e to p i c t u r e i n o u r m i n d s a c e i l i n g w i t h so many a n g e l s , b e a r d e d p r o p h e t s , p u l t i a n d t he foot of G o d ( h i s b i g t o e

T h e s e c o n d p l a y i s The Prince of Darkness and concerns some extraordinary goings-on i n a South L o n d o n v i c a r a g e . W h i l s t the i n c o m b e n t i s bury organising get-togethers for raincoat f a n a t i c s a n d granny knot f a n c i e r s , h i s n e w c o r a t e , e x R A F padre A K B u l s t r o d e , is seducing h i s wife b y performing m i r a c l e s . N o t that t h e r e ' s anything s u b s t a n t i a l l y wrong with this c o l l e c t i o n of s o n g s from the West C o a s t Bellamy Brothers; production, harmonies, p e r f o r m a n c e s a n d l y r i c s are a l l w e l l d o n e . Y e t the a l b u m l a c k s that ' Je ne sais quoi' that w o u l d t a k e i t from a v e r a g e to good. T h e s e two differing songs are r i f e w i t h e m o t i o n a n d s u c c e e d much more than the ' S t a n d a r d ' W e s t - C o a s t rythm s o n g . A n o t h e r f i n e s o n g , i n truth the a l b u m ' s b e s t , i s Let Fantasy Live. T h e p e n s i v e mood of t h i s r e a l l y c a u g h t m e , a s d i d the s t r o n g v o c a l treatment.
