A m o n g h i s many h o n o u r s , he r e c e i v e d the t i t l e of C h e v a l i e r de l a L e g i o n d ' H o n n e u r i n 1974. T h i s F r e n c h title w a s o r i g i n a t e d by N a p o l e o n . In the 17th century the F r e n c h t i t l e ' C h e v a l i e r ' w a s e q u i v a l e n t to the E n g l i s h K n i g h t .

In G a u s s ' hand w a s an e l e c t r o n gun a n d a s R e g w a t c h e d h e i n s e r t e d a c a r t r i d g e , took s h u r e a i m a n d p u l l e d the t r i g g e r. T h e s i n g l e s h o t r e v e r b e r a t e d and R e g d r o p p e d r a p i d l y to t h e d e c k , h i s l i f e c u t dead short a t i t s most p o s i t i v e p e a k . When h e got to t h e e n d , he s t o p p e d and j u s t s t o o d , c a u g h t in the m o d u l a t e d l i g h t beam of t h e m o t o r ' s l a m p s . It o p e r a t e s on the b a s i s of a n o n - e x c l u s i v e p o s s e s s i o n c l a u s e . E x c l u s i v e p o s s e s s i o n m e a n s that the t e n a n t s h a v e a r i g h t to enjoy the a c c o m m o d a t i o n that they o c c u p y to t h e e x c l u s i o n of e v e r y b o d y e l s e ( i n c l u d i n g c o n t r o l o v e r a c c e s s by the l a n d l o r d and h i s a g e n t s ) . If a group of p e o p l e take on a p l a c e b e t w e e n them, a l l s i g n i n g the same agreement a t the same t i m e , then t h e y are u s u a l l y j o i n t t e n a n t s w h o , a l t h o u g h they d o n ' t h a v e e x c l u s i v e p o s s e s s i o n a s a g a i n s t e a c h o t h e r , do h a v e e x c l u s i v e p o s s e s s i o n a s a group. The L . P . New Year Mutterings I hope you all had a very happy holiday and are now looking forward to studying hard this term. I'd like to congratulate the Rector on obtaining a L i f e Peerage which was announced in the New Year ' s Honours L i s t . I would also like to congratulate all those others from Imperial mentioned in the New Year'S Honours L i s t whose names are too numerous for me to remember. In my l a s t a r t i c l e at the end of l a s t term I m e n t i o n e d that S h i r l e y W i l l i a m s w o u l d be m a k i n g a major a n n o u n c e m e n t on the s u b j e c t of o v e r s e a s s t u d e n t s at the World U n i v e r s i t y S e r v i c e C o n f e r e n c e h e l d in late D e c e m b e r . T h e a n n o u n c e m e n t made w a s not p a r t i c u l a r l y mind s h a t t e r i n g . She c o n t i n u e d the l i n e that " t h e f u l l e c o n o m i c c o s t " of o v e r s e a s s t u d e n t s w a s in the r e g i o n of ÂŁ2.000 e a c h and t h a i therefore there w a s a h i d d e n s u b s i d y g i v e n ' b y the G o v e r n m e n t in the region of ÂŁ100 m i l l i o n to o v e r s e a s s t u d e n t s . S h e f e l t that t h i s amount c o u l d be better u s e d s u b s i d i s i n g t h o s e o v e r s e a s s t u d e n t s , in p a r t i c u l a r e c o n o m i c n e e d , e . g . from u n d e r d e v e l o p e d c o u n t r i e s . T h e i m p l i c a t i o n , h o w e v e r , w a s that for the a v e r a g e o v e r s e a s s t u d e n t , the future long-term r e v i e w may w e l l mean that they w i l l end up p a y i n g " t h e f u l l e c o n o m i c c o s t " in f e e s . There i s s o m e c o n s o l a t i o n , h o w e v e r , that n e x t y e a r there w i l l only be i n f l a t i o n i n c r e a s e s in t u i t i o n fee l e v e l s . A s the p o l i c y of Imperial C o l l e g e U n i o n i s to o p p o s e any i n c r e a s e s in fee l e v e l s w e w i l l , of c o u r s e , be a r g u i n g a g a i n s t G o v e r n i n g B o d y a c c e p t i n g a n y i n c r e a s e in t u i t i o n fees at t h e i r m e e t i n g at the end of t h i s term, it w i l l a l s o be an opportune t i m e to a g a i n o p p o s e the d i s c r i m i n a t o r y fee l e v e l s c h a r g e d to o v e r s e a s s t u d e n t s .
Refectories T h e G o v e r n i n g B o d y m e e t i n g h e l d on the l a s t day of l a s t term d e c i d e d a g a i n s t the R e f e c t o r y C o m m i t t e e ' s recommendation of a 2 % round the board i n c r e a s e on refectory p r i c e s . T h i s w a s of c o u r s e after c o n s i d e r a b l e o p p o s i t i o n from Imperial C o l l e g e U n i o n . T h i s s e e m s to m a k e u n n e c e s s a r y our b o y c o t t of the r e f e c t o r i e s w h i c h w a s to t a k e p l a c e e a r l y in the S p r i n g term. It w i l l be up to the U n i o n m e e t i n g h e l d on the 23rd J a n u a r y a s to whether they w i s h to c o n t i n u e w i t h the b o y c o t t or n o t . T h e r e r e m a i n s the problem of the i n c r e a s e in refectory p r i c e s w h i c h came about at the b e g i n n i n g of D e c e m b e r of 1.9% d u e to the F i n a n c i a l T i m e s index i n c r e a s e by that amount. T h i s i n c r e a s e c o m e s about a s a r e s u l t of the " r e g u l a t o r " w h i c h a i m s to make sure p r i c e i n c r e a s e s on food s t u f f s are kept up-to-date w i t h i n the r e f e c t o r i e s . H o w e v e r , the s t u d e n t r e p r e s e n t a t i v e s on the R e f e c t o r y C o m m i t t e e r e a l i s e d that a s the c o s t of food o n l y a c c o u n t s for h a l f the t o t a l c o s t of refectory m e a l s the i n c r e a s e s h o u l d in fact h a v e been o n l y 0 . 9 5 % in order to a c c o u n t for food p r i c e i n c r e a s e s . We w i l l therefore be r a i s i n g t h i s d i s c r e p a n c y in the future a s w e l l a s c o n t i n u i n g the c a m p a i g n to e n s u r e that the q u a l i t y of the food i s i m p r o v e d .

FOOTBALL IC IV 6 Q M C IV 0 IC started this league match still looking for their first league win of the season. Their previous inept performances had failed to produce any goals! T h e game s t a r t e d w i t h I C p l a y i n g w i t h the w i n d a n d the team found t h e m s e l v e s i n the u n a c c u s t o m e d p o s i t i o n o f a t t a c k i n g the o p p o s i n g team. T h e p r i z e f i r s t g o a l came after o n l y a few m i n u t e s w h e n J . S h u t t l e w o r t h h e a d e d o n a l o n g free k i c k f o r S . M a r t e n t o s c o r e . It w a s n ' t l o n g before J . S h u t t l e w o r t h s c o r e d t h e s e c o n d a n d the t h i r d g o a l f o l l o w e d when S . Man. Sci. Business Game T h e game i s a n e x e r c i s e in d e c i s i o n m a k i n g in the s i m u l a t e d at mosphere of the b u s i n e s s w o r l d . E a c h team i s g i v e n the same b a s i c information about c o n d i t i o n s and b a s e s its d e c i s i o n s on a d v e r t i s i n g , machine purchase, forecasting profits e t c . on t h i s information thus d e t e r m i n i n g i t s development a s a c o m p a n y . T h e team members i n c l u d e d u n d e r g r a d u a t e s , p o s t g r a d u a t e s and members of the a c a d e m i c staff. Many of them began w i t h a f l o u r i s h but t h e i r p r o f i t s d i m i n i s h e d a s the c o m p u t e r i s e d r e s u l t s of t h e i r d e c i s i o n s were a n a l y s e d . T h e day w a s , a s u s u a l , h i g h l y s u c c e s s f u l and greatly e n j o y e d by the s e v e n t y p a r t i c i p a n t s a s they found t h e m s e l v e s i n c r e a s i n g l y i n v o l v e d in the e c o n o m i c c o m p l e x i t i e s of t h e i r s u c c e s s e s and f a i l u r e s . In the f i n a l outcome the w i n n e r s were one of two teams from the M e c h a n i c a l E n g i n e e r i n g Department of B r u n e i U n i v e r s i t y (their other team c a m e fourth). T h e P r o d u c t i o n E n g i n e e r i n g Department, a l s o from B r u n e i , w e r e the runners up, and P r o f e s s o r Samuel E i l o n , T h e H e a d of the Department of Management S c i e n c e , p r e s e n t e d them both w i t h p r i z e s a s a prelude to the f e s t i v i t i e s of the C h r i s t m a s s e a s o n .
