A R o y a l C o l l e g e of S c i e n c e U n i o n meet i n g on T u e s d a y v o t e d to k i d n a p H R H T h e D u k e o f E d i n b u r g h i n order to r a i s e m o n e y for R C S R a g . M a r t i n W a t s o n , p r o p o s i n g the m o t i o n , t o l d the m e e t i n g that P r i n c e P h i l i p w o u l d be a t t e n d i n g the a n n u a l d i n n e r of the A r c t i c C l u b a t I m p e r i a l C o l l e g e on M o n d a y 2 2 n d January. The meeting voted almost unanim o u s l y that R C S U s h o u l d k i d n a p h i m f or a ransom of h a l f the Q u e e n ' s a n n u a l i n c o m e . It w a s p o i n t e d out that the D u k e m i g h t be a c c o m p a n i e d b y armed b o d y g u a r d s , b u t this objection was brushed aside. R C S U n i o n members h a d e a r l i e r h e a r d that the D u k e of E d i n b u r g h h a d d e c l i n e d an i n v i t a t i o n to a t t e n d the R C S A n n u a l D i n n e r l a t e r i n the y e a r . R e v e n g e at t h i s r e f u s a l w a s a l s o a m o t i v e o f the k i d n a p p l a n . H J T Hustings T h r e e c a n d i d a t e s are s t a n d i n g for the p o s t of R C S H o n o r a r y J u n i o r T r e a s u r e r f o l l o w i n g the r e s i g n a t i o n of J o h n M o t t i s h e a d . Dear Editor, - I noticed, with horror, that the F E L I X d i n n e r i s t h i s year to be h e l d in the " E l V i n o " restaurant i n F l e e t Street. E l V i n o ' s have a d i s c r i m i n a tory p r a c t i c e a g a i n s t women i n not a l l o w i n g women to be served in the bar. A woman j o u r n a l i s t took the management to c o u r t , w i t h the h e l p of the E q u a l O p p o r t u n i t i e s C o m m i s s i o n . T h e c a s e w a s one of the most f a r c i c a l in the h i s t o r y of the Sex D i s c r i m i n a t i o n A c t . T h e management c l a i m e d that the r u l e h a d been brought i n bec a u s e a l l o w i n g women to s i t on s t o o l s by the bar h a d meant that their handbags h a d c a u s e d congestion. T h e judge s a i d the management did not intend the r u l e to be derogatory, that there was a l a c k of i n f e r i o r s e r v i c e a n d that it w a s o n l y a matter of courtesy a s " b e i n g s e r v e d at the bar w o u l d e x p o s e a p e r s o n to the r i s k of b e i n g pushed or j o s t l e d " . T h e f i n a l i n s u l t w a s the judges f i n d i n g that the c a s e w a s D e M i n i m u s , i . e . too t r i v i a l to bother w i t h . T h e E . O . C - c o u l d not afford to t a k e the c a s e to the H i g h Court, s o unfortunately i t has been l e f t . D ear S i r , - On Saturday 6 th J a n uary, I bought a fountain pen a t B a r k e r s on K e n s i n g t o n High Street. It turned out to be f a u l t y , but when I took it back, B a r k e r s refused to replace i t , in d i r e c t contravention of the S u p p l y of Goods (Implied Terms) A c t 1973. T h e a s s i s t a n t manageress of the s t a t i o n a r y department told me company p o l i c y w o u l d not l e t her offer me a replacement, although she w o u l d s e n d i t b a c k to the manufacturers under guarantee, i f I wanted to w a i t f i v e w e e k s . D e a r S i r , - In the latter h a l f of the C h r i s t m a s term I . C . M u s i c S o c i e ty p r e s e n t e d no fewer than four concerts, three of an o r c h e s t r a l nature and one c h o r a l . A p p r o x i m a t e l y 320 m u s i c i a n s took part in these concerts and a l m o s t 1000 people attended a s members of the v a r i o u s a u d i e n c e s . T h e m a j ority of these p e o p l e have a c c e s s to the c o l l e g e newspaper and w o u l d be i n t e r e s t e d to see a r e v i e w of these concerts, and yet the producers of F e l i x make no attempt to provide coverage i n any form. Carl Seaford Dies It was w i th regret that I learned o f the death o f C a r l S e a ford. C a r l had been D o m e s t i c B u r s a r at I C from 1958 to 1975 and from then u n t i l h i s retirement o n 30th A p r i l 1978, D o m e s t i c Manager. H e w as probably b e s t known by the students for h i s " 3 C a r l T r i c k " at the Summer F e t e . H e d i e d p e a c e f u l l y i n h i s sleep during Wednesday n i g h t . Somewhere near half past ten last Sunday evening the old tradition of singing in the Beit Quadrangle was once again performed to the noticeable delight of the appreciative Beit residents. A l t h o u g h the show got off to a s h a k y s t a r t w i t h a m i x e d key v e r s i o n o f " A u l d L a n g S y n e " t h e e n t h u s i a s m w a s regenerated by t h e " K a n g a l a " . It w a s o b v i o u s that t h i s melody h a d been w e l l r e h e a r s e d a n d w a s d e l i v e r e d i n s t r o n g harmony w i t h a good t r e b l e . While most I.C. students were Christmas shopping, recovering from hangovers, or even revising (?) for Christmas tests, an intrepid party of four and two members of the academic staff made their ways to Goldsmith's College in Lewisham for the Annual Conference of the World University Service (UK). ICU is an affiliate of WUS (UK), an organisation which actively helps the needs of students, in particular worldwide. WUS is an i n t e r n a t i o n a l o r g a n i z a t i o n w h i c h t r a c e s i t s roots to the 1920s to a group c a l l e d E u r o p e a n Student R e l i e f . T h i s w a s m a i n l y c o n c e r n e d w i t h the s i t u a t i o n of war-affected a c a d e m i c s and t ri ed to a l l e v i a t e t h e i r p r o b l e m s . The group adopted i t s p r e s e n t name in the 1950s and now c o n c e n t r a t e s on projects w h i c h w i l l benefit c o m m u n i t i e s a s a w h o l e . WUS i s d e d i c a t e d to the freedom of thought and a c t i o n in e d u c a t i o n (a term taken in i t s w i d e s t p o s s i b l e sense by WUS) and pursues t h i s aim by e n c o u r a g i n g e d u c a t i o n a l b o d i e s , s u c h as u n i v e r s i t i e s , to a c t r e s p o n s i b l y s o c i a l l y . H e n c e WUS o p p o s e s a l l d i s c r i m i n a t i o n , e x p l o i t a t i o n and i n j u s t i c e in e d u c a t i o n a n d , w h e r e it c a n , t a k e s a c t i o n . T h e U K branch of WUS c o n c e n t r a t e s on the n e e d s of o v e r s e a s s t u d e n t s , p a r t i c u l a r l y refugees in t h i s c o u n t r y , and to a s m a l l e r extent in p r o v i d i n g information to the p u b l i c , the Government and its members. A s the 1978 T r e a s u r e r , M r . B i l l R o b e r t s o n of I.e., reported WUS (UK) i s an e d u c a t i o n a l c h a r i t y . A p p r o a c h i n g £3 m i l l i o n w a s s p e n t in 1 9 7 7 / 8 , but the importance of t h i s money l i e s in the u s e to w h i c h i t ' h a s been put. T h e Government, through the O v e r s e a s Development M i n i s t r y and W U S , supports C h i l e a n , U g a n d a n , E t h i o p i a n and IndoC h i n e s e refugee s t u d e n t s in the U K and A f r i c a n s t u d e n t s at the U n i v e r s i t y of R h o d e s i a . Through c h a r i t a b l e trusts and i n d i v i d u a l d o n a t i o n s , a i d i s g i v e n to K u r d i s h s t u d e n t s in the U K and P a l e s t i n i a n a n d N e p a l e s e s t u d e n t s o v e r s e a s . I . C . c o l l e c t e d £500 for WUS d u r i n g r e g i s t r a t i o n l a s t term; s i m i lar c o l l e c t i o n s w e r e held around the c o u n t r y . Some u n i v e r s i t y and c o l l e g e WUS groups even f i n a n c e s c h o l a r s h i p s t h e m s e l v e s . C o l l e g e a u t h o r i t i e s a s s i s t by w a i v i n g fees for needy s t u d e n t s . H o w e v e r , B i l l R o b e r t s o n warned a g a i n s t o v e r d e p e n d e n c e on f i n a n c e from Government s o u r c e s , w h i c h might not a l w a y s be f o r t h c o m i n g . Nebulous R i c h a r d L u c e , M P , Shadow M i n i s t e r for O v e r s e a s D e v e l o p m e n t s p o k e about " H u m a n R i g h t s and E d u c a t i o n a l A i d " . H e began by e m p h a s i s i n g that human r i g h t s ' problems are b a s i c but " n e b u l o u s " . H a v i n g l a i d down c e r t a i n c o n d i t i o n s for c o n s i d e r i n g human r i g h t s , in p a r t i c u l a r that c o n d e m n a t i o n of inhumane regimes must be i r r e s p e c t i v e of the p o l i t i c a l c o m p l e x i o n of the p a r t i c u l a r regime (e.g. S o v i e t U n i o n and Iran), M r . L u c e went on to s a y that human r i g h t s ' problems h a v e to be d e a l t w i t h country by country w i t h due regard to h i s t o r i c a l , s t r a t e g i c and e c o n o m i c f a c t o r s . T h i s c o n t r a d i c t o r y s t a n d -

point was t y p i c a l of a s p e e c h that a s k e d many q u e s t i o n s , but a n s wered very few; it s e e m s strange for a Shadow M i n i s t e r not to be full of p o s s i b l e s o l u t i o n s to s u c h b a s i c (but " n e b u l o u s " ) p r o b l e m s . H o w e v e r , M r . L u c e made s e v e r a l p o i n t s that are worth r e p e a t i n g . In p r i n c i p l e he e x p r e s s e d support for voluntary o r g a n i z a t i o n s , s u c h a s W U S . O x f a m and A m n e s t y I n t e r n a t i o n a l , who can g a i n c r e d i b i l i t y abroad by being p o l i t c a l l y n e u t r a l . Such c h a r i t i e s are v i t a l s i n c e they h a v e the o r g a n i z a t i o n to b y p a s s regimes and d i s t r i b u t e a i d and e d u c a t i o n where n e e d e d , i.e. the p e o p l e , e f f i c i e n t l y and at short n o t i c e . In most c a s e s it w o u l d be d i f f i c u l t for the Government to do t h i s w h i l e w o r k i n g with the regime in q u e s t i o n . A t the moment, refugee s t u d e n t s are o f f i c i a l l y c l a s s e d as o v e r s e a s students and there i s no Governmental strategy for r e f u g e e s , p a r t i c u l a r l y in regaid to e d u c a t i o n . M r . L u c e s u g g e s t e d that human rights p o l i c y s h o u l d be i n s t i t u t i o n a l i s e d in B r i t a i n and that in the long-term refugees s h o u l d be h e l p e d so that they c o u l d return home. Tuition F ees T h e R t . H o n . S h i r l e y W i l l i a m s , M P , gave a s p e e c h on " E d u c a t i o n for O v e r s e a s S t u d e n t s " . Af t er reaffirming her strong belief that theie s h o u l d be a " s u b s t a n t i a l proportion of o v e r s e a s s t u d e n t s " in B r i t i s h further e d u c a t i o n , she o u t l i n e d the G o v e r n m e n t ' s strategy in t h i s a r e a . T h i s i n c l u d e s , a s d e s c r i b e d in F E L I X l a s t w e e k , that the " h i d d e n s u b s i d y " of £100 m towards o v e r s e a s student fees from the Government s h o u l d be u s e d " p o s i t i v e l y " to h e l p " s e l e c t e d g r o u p s " p a r t i c u l a r l y from d e v e l o p i n g c o u n t r i e s . T h i s w o u l d mean the others w o u l d h a v e to pay more, and the M i n i s t e r s u g g e s t e d m e a n s - t e s t i n g and a c a d e m i c s c h o l a r s h i p s to h e l p t h o s e l e s s w e l l off. ember 1968, the army a r r i v e d to arrest M r s . B u d i a r d j o h e r s e l f . H e r h u s b a n d h a p p e n e d to be in the h o u s e at the time and s o , d e s p i t e h i s c a r r y i n g a document d e c l a r i n g h i s u n conditional release, he was arrested a l s o . E v e n t u a l l y , due e n t i r e l y to efforts by A m n e s t y , M r s . B j d i a r d j o w a s r e l e a s e d in November 1971 and a l l o w e d to return to B r i t a i n , where s h e h a s been c a m p a i g n i n g for the r e l e a s e of other Indonesian p o l i t i c a l prisoners ever s i n c e . Gross Country Club The end of last term saw history in the l making as the cross country club staged their annual handicap in Richmond Park. Having helped his team win two trophies in the previous week, Maurice Wilson then achieved the remarkable feat of winning the handicap for the third successive year, so j crowning what must be the greatest eight days in his short, yet brilliant career. S e t t i n g off o v e r two m i n u t e s b e h i n d t h e s l o w e s t runners a n d o n l y j u s t o v e r a m i n u t e a h e a d o f the f a s t e s t , h e s t i l l managed what e v e r y o n e h a d i m a g i n e d to be i m p o s s i b l e . What was needed was a good hard game to tone everybody up - unfortunately we were playing R . A . F . Uxbridge (say no more!). A f t e r an u n e v e n t f u l c o a c h journey we a r r i v e d at the b a s e to f i n d w h a t appeared to b e brand new c h a n g i n g rooms - many of the team had never seen s u c h l u x u r y , e s p e c i a l l y Steve Ciunn who l i v e s i n a p i g stye so we u n d e r s t a n d . A n y w a y we a l l c h a n g e d , ran onto the p i t c h , k i c k e d off, and the s l a u g h t e r b e g a n . S c o r i n g w a s s o e a s y that i t was hard for I.C. to m a i n t a i n c o n c e n t r a t i o n . H o w e v e r , t r i e s came at regular i n t e r v a l s and the score e s c a l a t e d to 32-3 at h a l f - t i m e . Y e s , they a c t u a l l y s c o r e d 3 p o i n t s from a p e n a l t y beneath our p o s t s ! T h e s e c o n d h a l f c o n t i n u e d as the f i r s t h a l f h a d f i n i s h e d off and by f u l l time the a b o v e t o t a l h a d been c l o c k e d u p . T h e o n l y
events to break the boredom b e i n g a s n o w shower and M . C o t t e r b e i n g warned by the referee not to make the o p p o s i t i o n l o o k l i k e f o o l s . A t one time B a s , our t r a v e l l i n g l i n e s m a n , was s l i d e t a c k l e d by one of t h e i r p l a y ers and ended up on h i s b a c k w a v i n g h i s f l a g - not a pretty s i g h t ! It m u s t be s a i d that h a d we p l a y e d to our f u l l extent the s c o r e w o u l d have been over 100- a n d t h i s w a s not a c h i e v e d b e c a u s e too many t r i e s were m i s s e d due to dropping the ball etc. A f t e r the game we spent a l o n g time in t h e i r bar (25 p per p i n t , 18p per short) thanks to a great c o a c h d r i v e r - enough s a i d ! In the C u p the F i f t h s are through to the quarter-finals to be p l a y e d l a t e r t h i s term. A S T M S - The Settlement The dispute between the Association of Scientific, Technical and Managerial Staff at IC and the College, which ended last week, is estimated to have cost the College a quarter of a million pounds. F o r ten w e e k s t e c h n i c i a n s r e f u s e d to work o n a l m o s t a l l e l e c t r i c a l equipment a s i t h a d n o t been i n s p e c t e d i n a c c o r d a n c e w i t h C o l l e g e Safety P o l i c y . B e c a u s e t h e i r a c t i o n d i d n o t a m o u n t to a s t r i k e , C o l l e g e w a s s t i l l p a y i n g up to ÂŁ25,000 per w e e k i n w a g e s to i d l e s t a f f . College Fires T w o s m a l l f i r e s broke out in c o l l e g e l a s t w e e k b u t both w e r e e x t i n g u i s h e d before the a r r i v a l o f the fire b r i g a d e . T h e f i r s t o c c u r r e d on Wednesday i n the C h e m i c a l Engineering Department. A postgraduate i n a l e v e l 5 l a b o r a t o r y w a s w o r k i n g w i t h the c h e m i c a l tetrahydrofuran w h i c h o v e r h e a t e d a n d c a u g h t fire c a u s i n g a s m a l l amount of damage to the fume c u p b o a r d . Two p o s t g r a d u a t e s u s i n g h a n d - h e l d fire e x t i n g u i s h e r s managed to put out the f l a m e s before the fire b r i g a d e a r r i v e d o n the s c e n e . T h e fire on F r i d a y l u n c h t i m e w a s s l i g h t l y more s e r i o u s .
