Lance Dane Leaves behind a National Treasure of Coins & Antiques
I
t is with profound pain, I report the death of Mr. Lance Dane, a seasoned coin collector, an art photographer and a scholar on Hindu iconography & erotic studies. Lance Dane breathed his last on 16th May 2012 at his Mahim residence in Mumbai after a brief illness. He was 87. I met Lance during the summer days of 1986 at the residence of the Late Shri S M Shukla in Mumbai. I was impressed by the knowledge of this English gentleman on the Punch-marked coins of India. This led me to meet him frequently at the Shukla residence and then at his sea-facing apartment at Warden Road. I was much impressed by his breath-taking photographs of coins. From him I learned the phrase 'photogenic coins'. He subsequently gave me my first SLR camera with Macro lens and an Electronic typewriter. He taught me his skill of art photography by tilting coins facing the sun and having zero shadow of the coins on a black background. Lance was instrumental in editing my early articles on coins. Half of my Ph. D. thesis was based on his collection of ancient coins of Gujarat.
Lance preparing a list of coins from an auction catalogue on 23rd Oct. 2010 at New Delhi
Lance could re-gather many dispersed coin hoards which otherwise had the fate at the smelter's furnace. He could not only collect coins and save them; he also popularized coins through his Calendars of the Reserve Bank of India and many other banks as well as of private companies. The popularity of those calendars is such that even after 25 years, they are still used by collectors throughout India in exhibiting coins in exhibitions.
For a last few years, Lance had shifted to New Delhi for his revised edition of Kama Sutra. Recently, he had shifted back to his rented apartment at Mahim in Mumbai, and was looking for a suitable place to donate his entire numismatic collection that can be used by scholars as well as researchers for their quest in rewriting the history of India. rd
On 23 December 2011, Lance had entered into an MoU with the Trustees of the Hinduja Foundation, Mumbai. Accordingly, Lance was to donate his entire life-time collection of coins and antiquities to the Foundation, which in turn is bound to build a museum in his memory for the benefits of numismatic community as well as for general public. As a result, he had already documented and donated 5,783 coins to the Foundation and rest were being documented for the purpose when his untimely death took place. It is understood that once the government authorities take a final inventory of his now-sealed collection, the country will be richer by a National Treasure of coins that took 65 years and a life-time's earnings to make by a fine numismatist and connoisseur of art, viz. Lance Dane. Lance is survived by his adopted numismatist son, R. D. Bhatt and daughter-in-law Sheetal in New Delhi.

New NGS Slabs are Colourful
New Slabs / Holders (actual size)
T
he NGS of India has recently launched its much awaited new Slabs. These Slabs are broader, sleeker and attractive. The Inserts used are Red in colour, a novelty introduced by any Grading company, which otherwise still use the olden black and white slabs. The Red Inserts are made of the same white inserts used earlier but are softer in nature. The red colour will add a new colour in your collection of coins and notes. NGS Collectors have already started placing orders to replace their slabs with the new ones.
