CMF PROJECT for stroke rehab wearable
insights + painpoints Stroke rehabilitation is a painful process. The distressing fact is that an unsuccessful rehabilitation training can worsen stroke patients’ temporary mobolity loss to permanent disbilities:
85% of stroke patients lose confidence in the process of rehabilitation due to the deficiency of real-time feedback on their mobility status.
Caregivers (medical staff / patients’ family members) cannot intuitively learn the remaining mobility of stroke patients, thus 90% stroke patients‘ dependence are oftenly increased by “OVER-CARE.“

pressure-sensitive fiber MIT Materials Research Laboratory has developed a tension-detective, color-changing fiber that is currently used for blood pressure compression therapy.

after attending Stanford’s open lecture on human body structure and reading open resource about limb anatomy, I gained an understanding on muscle distribution.

I mapped out veins and muscles on myself and sorted the major overlapping area to several reflecting parts.

fabric print prototype
with the help of fabric printer and AI, I mocked up pressure-detective fabric and its visual reactions of muscle movement. While the active muscle changes color of the strings on the fabric, the unchanged, gray strings represent muscle‘s deactivation. After presenting and user testing to stroke patients, I refined the design and move further on fabric considerations.

The garment is full of energy with a synthetic fusion. The crimson TPE charging cord with matte finish creates contrast with the green accent, intensifying the energetic facet.

fabric and textile I collected fabric samples and tried to use loom to weave conductive fiber into everyday fabric and test its elasticity, permeability, conductivity and skin irratation.

after closely studying fishermen’s behaviors, I realize that they prefer bags worn on the front/waist, in where space are not utilized well by their current equipments.

I visited the manufacturer which helps to product Noah in Shenzhen during this past winter break. After consulting with professional pattern tailor and material specialist, I modified the specification of the bag and enhanced the quality of many accessories.
