FROM THE PUBLISHER You are reading the most comprehensive health care directory ever compiled for Russellville and the Arkansas River Valley. We hope this directory is a resource you will utilize all year — and that you’ll keep it near your phone or somewhere else you can easily access if you or a family member is in need of a health care provider or service. Publishing a directory of this magnitude is a huge undertaking. It takes time and many individuals to be able to gather, organize and print a directory containing the volume of information this one includes. The Courier sta would like to thank everyone who participated in helping us with this directory. The listings contained in the Arkansas River Valley Medical Directory and Physicians Guide have grown in number and geographical area over the years. Originally contained to the immediate area in and around Russellville, the directory now contains listings of medical professionals extending throughout the Arkansas River Valley and central Arkansas. We made every attempt to ensure the accuracy and completeness of every listing; however, if there are any omissions, we apologize and we will be sure to include them in next year’s directory. A read through this directory provides proof that the Arkansas River Valley is home to many talented and accomplished health care providers. It’s apparent area residents can be assured that quality health care David Meadows is just a phone call or visit away. The Courier

FEATURES Simple ways to stay fit all year long
M
any people find it easier to maintain their beach bodies during summer than they do throughout the rest of the year. Summer weather encourages people to get off the couch and enjoy the great outdoors, and many people prefer to eat lighter meals during the summer to combat the heat and humidity. But once the dog days of summer give way to autumn, the motivation to stay in beach shape tends to wane. Couple that dwindling motivation with the tendency to eat larger, heartier meals as the weather gets colder, and it’s easy to see why so many people gain weight over the last several months of the year and into the new year.
But maintaining a healthy weight year-round promotes long-term health and reduces a person’s risk for various ailments and diseases, including heart disease and diabetes.

Diet and exercise needs change with age
M
aintaining a healthy weight is important at any age. But avoiding being overweight or obese can be particularly crucial for seniors, considering many illnesses are tied to body weight. Maintaining a healthy immune system also can require eating a balanced, nutritionally sound diet. The Geriatric Research, Education, and Clinical Center at Durham Medical Center in Virginia says people need to change how they eat for every decade they reach. Caloric intake should be reduced because individuals are generally moving around less, have less muscle and their metabolic rates decline. People who find that they are having trouble losing weight in their 50s and older may be basing weight-loss goals on calorie recommendations for younger people.

Main 967-5266 • Lake Front 967-9814 • Parkway 968-7976 • Dover 331-4444 Continued from Page 43 The following are a handful of strategies men and women can employ as they try to turn their beach bodies into the bodies they see in the mirror all year long. • Keep setting goals. As winter heads toward spring, many people set shortterm goals to motivate them to get back into beach shape. That’s a highly effective strategy that need not be exclusive to late winter. Setting short-term fitness and dietary goals throughout the year can keep you from falling back into bad habits. Tie your goals into the season to increase your chances for success. For example, resolve to run outdoors or cycle a certain number of miles each week in autumn, when the weather is still conducive to physical activity and the scenery is idyllic. When winter arrives and exercising outdoors is no longer viable, commit to attending a few fitness classes per week at your gym. • Switch up your workout routine
every few weeks. Boredom also can affect people’s ability to maintain healthy weights year-round. Adhering to the same exercise routine for months on end can grow tedious. The body can even grow accustomed to the same workout routine, meaning you won’t be getting as much out of your exercise sessions as you might if you switch things up. If you find your daily workouts taking a turn toward the mundane, switch up your routine by changing exercises or signing up for classes that interest you. • Find healthy seasonal foods. Many people prefer to buy locally sourced and/or in-season foods, recognizing the positive impact that such dietary habits can have on the environment. That commitment to buying healthy, locally grown foods can be tested as the seasons change and the offerings at your local market change along with them. Educate yourself about which foods are in-season in your area throughout the year, opting for the most nutritious
foods you can find. Buying in-season foods saves you money, and you will also feel good about staying on a nutritious, ecofriendly track. • Join an exercise group or sports league. The buddy system is an effective way to stay committed to a fitness regimen, but if you cannot find a friend or family member to brave cold winter treks to the gym with you, then consider joining an exercise group or competitive sports league. As summer turns to autumn, join a road runner’s club to motivate you to run. When harsh weather makes running outdoors too difficult, sign up for a winter sports league. Such groups or leagues get you off the couch and provide great opportunities to meet like-minded men and women who have made their own commitments to staying fit. Staying fit all year long is a challenge for many people. But maintaining that beach body even after summer has come and gone need not be so difficult.

One challenging thing about eating less overall is supplementing with more nutrient-rich foods. Older bodies still require similar amounts of protein, vitamins and minerals as younger ones, but older men and women must balance that need with their need to consume less calories. Consuming more fruits, vegetables and lean protein sources, including beans, and choosing whole grains over refined starchy foods can be the key. Watch what you drink, as well. Soft drinks and other sugary beverages may be packed with calories you don’t need. Choose unsweetened beverages and opt for water as much as possible. Protect yourself against dehydration, which can be harder to detect as you get older. In addition to modifying food and beverage choices and reducing their calorie intake, seniors should continue

to exercise. Healthy eating paired with moderate exercise remains one of the best combinations for healthy weight loss or weight maintenance. The goal is to consume fewer calories and expend more energy. While cardiovascular exercises can be a good way to get the heart pumping and stimulate your metabolic rate, as you age you should perform strength-training and weight-bearing exercises as well. Muscle mass naturally diminishes with age, and according to the Mayo Clinic if you avoid strength exercises you can eventually lose muscle and increase the percentage of fat in your body. Strength training also helps you develop stronger bones, which can help prevent fractures. In addition, as you gain muscle, your body will begin to burn calories more efficiently, making your time in and out of the gym more
productive. Apart from diet and exercise, aging adults may need to consult with their doctors about nutritional supplements. Your body may produce less stomach acid as you get older, making it more difficult to absorb vitamins from food, including vitamin B12 and vitamin D. Aging skin is less able to transform sunlight into the vitamin, which can affect the body’s ability to absorb calcium. Deficiencies in vitamins D and B12 and calcium can result in a number of health conditions. Routine blood work can help pinpoint whether you are deficient in key nutrients. The body’s nutritional and fitness needs change as a person ages. Those uncertain about the lifestyle changes they will need to make should speak with their physicians.

E
xercise is an essential component of a healthy lifestyle. The World Health Organization recommends that healthy adults between the ages of 18 and 64 perform at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity each week or do at least 75 minutes of vigorous-intensity aerobic activity each week. Many adults cite hectic schedules as their reason for not getting enough exercise, but even those who do find time to exercise could find themselves sidelined if they do not take certain preventive measures to reduce their risk for injury. Though injuries can happen to even the most seasoned and knowledgeable athletes, there are certain measures adults can take to reduce their injury risk. • Recognize your limitations. Once you have established a regular exercise routine and your body has grown accustomed

to daily exercise, it can be tempting to overdo it or even unknowingly push your body to points that put you at a greater risk of injury. But recognizing your limitations is an essential part of avoiding injury. As you exercise more, you may notice certain areas of your body respond better to exercise than others. For example, if your wrists ache after strength training sessions, reduce the amount of weight you are lifting or look for strength-building exercises that don’t require lifting weights. • Warm up before each session. No matter how accustomed your body is to regular exercise, warming up before each workout is still necessary to avoid injury. Warming up before each workout elevates your heart rate and increases circulation, loosening the joints and increasing blood
flow to the muscles you’re about to exercise. Between five and 10 minutes of lowintensity cardiovascular exercise can help loosen up your body and prepare it for the more grueling workout to come. • Switch your routines every so often. When exercise becomes a part of your daily routine, you may end up hitting a plateau. When that happens, your workouts may feel less effective. Switching up routines every so often can combat that problem while also reducing injury risk to overtaxed muscles forced to endure the same exercises day in and day out. Diversify your workout every so often by choosing new exercises and switching up the cardiovascular portion of your workout. • Give your body time to rest and recover. Exercise feels good, both physi-
cally and mentally. Daily exercise can help adults lose weight, and shedding those extra pounds can improve mobility and help adults live more active and fulfilling lives. Exercise also causes the release of hormones known as endorphins, which trigger positive feelings in the body. Those positive feelings can be somewhat addictive, but it’s important that adults give their bodies time to rest and recover between workouts. Lack of time to rest and recover makes bodies vulnerable to injury, so include time to recover in your weekly exercise regimen. Daily exercise can help adults live long, healthy and fulfilling lives. But it’s important that men and women of all ages take steps to reduce their risk of exerciserelated injury.

Find healthy foods while on the go
N
ice weather often equates to an uptick in road trips. During such trips, motorists and their passengers will need to take breaks to refuel both their vehicles and their bodies. Rest stop and convenience store snack options are often unhealthy, and it can be difficult for nutrition-minded travelers to find acceptable fare. But a little creativity coupled with some smarter choices can ensure road trips don’t derail healthy diets. • Bring food along. One of the easiest ways to eat healthy while traveling is to bring meals and snacks with you. Look for portable foods that may not require much refrigeration, such as fruit bars or trail mix. If you have room in the car for a small cooler or insulated lunch packs, fill them with fresh fruits and sandwiches. Opt for lean lunch meats like chicken and turkey. Avoid using cheese or dress-
ings like mayonnaise that can quickly spoil. Some other easily portable foods include applesauce cups, oatmeal packets (all you need is hot water from a rest stop) and low-sodium, low-fat jerky. Pack plenty of water, a healthier choice than soft drinks that will also keep you hydrated when sitting in the car for extended periods of time. • Find healthy fast food. If packing food is not an option or if you just prefer the convenience of getting something along the way, you can still make informed choices. Opt for foods that are roughly 500 calories or less and boast plenty of protein and whole grains to help you feel full longer. You may not be able to enjoy low-sodium foods, as many fast food options go heavy on the salt. Just steer clear of extra condiments that only increase those already considerable sodium levels.

If you must opt for fast food, do not order sides of fries or chips, which will only make meals less healthy. Also, avoid sugary sodas. Many fast food restaurants offer some healthy fare, such as grilled chicken sandwiches. Order such sandwiches plain or with extra lettuce and tomato for a healthy crunch. tion sizes. If possible, purchase a kid’s meal and opt for a side of sliced apples or another healthy alternative. • Make smart choices at sit-down restaurants, too. It’s important to stay focused on healthy fare even when you pull off the highway and patronize more traditional sit-down restaurants. Again, think smaller portions. Consider splitting an entrée with another person in your traveling party. Some chains will offer the nutritional information right on the menu, or put a special symbol next to their healthiest offerings. Substitute steamed vegetables for starchy or fattening side dishes and always ask for sauces to be served on the side. It’s not always easy to eat healthy when traveling. But travelers can often find healthy fare, even if they need to bring it along themselves.

Combat-style exercise programs on the rise
E
xercise is an essential element of a healthy lifestyle. When combined with a healthy diet, exercise can help men and women maintain a healthy weight, delay the onset of certain diseases and improve overall health. To ensure they get enough exercise, many people join a gym. But as popular as gyms are, many individuals have a narrow view of what constitutes a thorough “gym” workout. They may believe they’ll spend their entire time like a hamster in a wheel on the treadmill or may be intimidated by the rows of machines before them. Fortunately, today’s gyms are much more than weight benches and elliptical machines. Many boast an array of fitness classes, and a great many more offer martial arts and combat-style classes. Such offerings attract fitness enthusiasts who may be looking for a workout with an edge. What’s more, these types of routines can help increase stamina and strength all while reducing stress. Kickboxing classes, bootcamp, high-intensity interval training, and mixed martial arts are just a few of the programs on the rise in today’s gyms. The following is a brief look at some of the popular class offerings at gyms around the country.

Mixed martial arts (MMA) MMA is one of the fastest-growing sports in the world. MMA combines various styles of fighting in a no-holds-barred style of combat. Punching, kicking and classic martial arts moves are part of MMA. Wrestling may be thrown in for added fun as well. Fitness classes geared around MMA will incorporate many of the moves without the actual combat taking place. Kickboxing Kickboxing classes will pit you against a punching bag. You will learn proper stances and will work to improve balance and movement. People may believe only the legs and arms get a workout during kickboxing, but your core muscles do their part to help you keep your footing and put power behind your kicks and punches. Krav Maga Krav Maga class may entice self-defense tactic enthusiasts. Krav Maga employs techniques from martial arts disciplines but includes some self-defense moves as well. Classes will not only teach participants how to defend themselves from attacks, but will also work on agility and strength. Boxing For anyone who has ever wanted to channel their inner Rocky Balboa, boxing classes may be just the fit. Boxing will work many of the same muscle groups as kickboxing, but without the roundhouse kicks. Boxing can be a super stress-buster.

outine medical screenings are an essential element of a healthy lifestyle. Many health screenings are recommended for both men and women, but women also should include some gender-specific testing in their health routines. • Breast cancer: According to Breastcancer.org, roughly one in eight women in the United States will develop invasive breast cancer over the course of her lifetime. The Canadian Cancer Society says breast cancer is the second leading cause of death from cancer in Canadian women. The earlier a woman finds breast cancer, the better her chance for survival. Cancers caught early are less likely to spread to the lymph nodes and vital organs than cancers caught at later stages. Recommendations on mammogram screening start time and frequency vary with age and risk factor, so women should discuss and develop an individualized plan with their doctors. • Cervical cancer: Doctors advise that women should receive pelvic exams beginning at age 21, or earlier for women who are sexually active. Pap smears are screenings that help detect the presence of cancerous cells on and around the cervix that may be indicative of cancer. Guidelines continually change regarding the frequency of testing, but the general consensus is women age 30 and older may need screening every three years if they have not had any abnormal tests in the past, according to Everyday Health. • Bone density test: Osteoporosis, a weakening of bones that causes them to become more fragile, may initially be symptomfree. The National Osteoporosis Foundation says that estrogen decreases during menopause can cause bone loss, which is why women have a higher risk of developing osteoporosis than men. In addition to healthy habits, bone mineral density tests beginning at age 65 or earlier can help identify problems early on. Guidelines recommended by the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force, a group of experts in disease prevention, also recommend these screenings for women: blood pressure, cholesterol, colorectal cancer, and diabetes.

Natural ways to reduce your risk of contacting Lyme disease
T
he great outdoors can be a wonder to behold. Parks, nature preserves or even some time spent in the backyard can help men, women and children reconnect with nature. While there is plenty to enjoy about the great outdoors, certain hazards are lurking. Ticks can be both a nuisance and a danger, potentially contributing to illnesses like Lyme disease. Recognizing the dangers of ticks and how to avoid tick bites can help people reduce their risk for contracting Lyme disease. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention note that, after hatching from eggs, ticks must eat blood at every stage to survive. It can take up to three years for a tick to complete its full life cycle, meaning it needs quite a few hosts to feed on. Ticks are part of the arachnid family, but unlike spiders, ticks attach to the skin of an animal and suck its blood. Ticks can be found just about anywhere, but they tend to gravitate toward wooded areas or tall grasses, which offer them protection and good vantage points to find an animal host. Dog owners have no doubt encountered ticks in their lifetimes, as ticks
are routine problems for dogs that are not properly protected. But ticks also prey on humans. Ticks are and their bites are relatively painless, which can make it difficult for people to detect when they have been bitten. Many tick bites are harmless and do not require treatment. However, if bitten by a tick that is carrying Lyme disease or Rocky Mountain spotted fever, people may need to take an antibiotic to prevent any lasting health effects. As a result, people should always visit a doctor when bitten by a tick. Pesticide repellants are some of the more effective and well-known methods to prevent tick bites and subsequent side effects. Many repellants can be used without negative side effects, but those who prefer to go a more natural route can take the following precautionary measures. • Watch habitats. Steer clear of grassy, wooded and brushy areas. Ticks also prefer humid conditions. • Stick to trails. Stay on trails when hiking or walking to avoid brushing up against areas where ticks may be hiding out. • Wear proper clothing. Light-colored
clothing makes it easier to spot ticks that may have made their way onto a person. Tuck pants into socks, as ticks tend to climb onto hosts from the ground up. Bare ankles provide easy access. • Protect hair and heads. Wear a hat and/ or keep long hair contained so that it isn’t an attractive hiding spot for ticks. • Shower immediately. After coming in from areas known for ticks, shower and launder clothing immediately. While showering, do a spot inspection looking for ticks on your body. Remember to look in hidden areas like under the arms, in and around the ears, inside the belly button, on the back of the knees, in and around the hair, between the legs, and around the waist. • Clean up the yard. Make your yard less habitable to ticks by mowing the grass regularly and removing leaf litter and trim shrubs. Also, use wood chips or gravel to serve as a barrier between lawns and wooded areas of the property. • Use natural oils. Ticks may not like the smell of garlic, lemon, eucalyptus, lavender, and rosemary, among others. Dotting your body with these infused oils may make you less attractive to ticks.
