n behalf of the natives, I would like to welcome you to our part of the Arkansas River Valley. While the official “valley” stretches more or less from Fort Smith to Conway, we believe we reside in the most beautiful, most accessible and most accommodating portion. Stunning scenery for every season is offered up at Lake Dardanelle and along the banks of the Arkansas River. Additionally, Mount Nebo and the Ozark National Forest offer any number of vantage points along State Highway 7 and Interstate 40 in Pope, Johnson and Yell counties. Whether you are visiting, are a new resident or are thinking about relocating to the area, I think you’ll find this edition of our Tourism and Newcomers Guide extremely helpful. about the area On March 2, 1819, the territory of Arkansas was formed from lands part of the Louisiana Purchase. The heart of the Arkansas River Valley, Pope County, was formed Nov. 2, 1829. It originally included all of presentday Johnson and Yell counties, and was named for John Pope, the third governor of the Arkansas Territory. The community of Scotia was the seat. Eventually, Pope County’s government would move to Russellville, while the offshoots of Johnson and Yell counties would adopt Clarksville and Dardanelle and Danville, respectively, as their seats — the present-day circumstance of what were, once upon a time, Cherokee lands.

Directions to the Piney: To reach Long Pool, a popular launch site, travel six miles north of Dover on State Highway 7; west on State Highway 164; northeast on Forest Road 1801 for three miles; and northwest on Forest Road 1804 for two miles.

s big adventure what you’re looking for? Maybe a calm, relaxing day trip? Smallmouth bass fishing, a getaway for a family camping trip or picnic, hiking — or maybe a float down Class I to Class III rapids? The Big Piney Creek, which flows for 70.8 miles through Pope, Johnson and Newton counties, is the prime location for year-’round recreational activities for the adventurous, not to mention those who want to take it easy in the Arkansas River Valley. The Big Piney is situated in the heart of the Ozarks. Its headwaters are in what most locals consider a “remote, rugged area in Newton County.” The mouth of the creek empties into Lake Dardanelle, which makes it a tributary of the Arkansas River and part of the Mississippi River watershed. With scenic, mountainous terrain creekside and numerous rapids twisting through its tri-county course, the U.S. Forest Servicemanaged creek is one of Arkansas’ most beautiful and recreational opportunities. The clear mountain stream also provides numerous swimming opportunities along its course. In Pope County, a prime day excursion that could easily extend

across several days is Long Pool Recreation Area and Campground. Long Pool — surrounded by large bluffs — is a natural pool for swimming and is also used as an access point for the float to the “Twin Bridges” on the Big Piney. There are several campsites, grills, public restrooms, hot and cold showers and hiking trails for your pleasure. If canoeing, rafting or kayaking down the creek, don’t forget to stop in at Moore Outdoors, on State Highway 164, before you get to Long Pool. Debbie and Kerry Moore have owned and operated the business since 1978. Moore Outdoors rents boats and rafts during the morning hours while the water is at acceptable floating levels. The Moores also provide shuttles that allow newcomers and seasoned paddlers the opportunity to get to know the area better through colorful stories along the ride. Moore Outdoors also has cold drinks, snacks and gear for purchase and a nearby campground at the Twin Bridges take-out point on the Big Piney. Optimum flow for floating is at stages 2-4 feet on the Big Piney, so choose your moment, then grab your camera, your friends and family and hit the Big Piney for days worth of fun, adventures and memories.

elcome to Johnson County, God’s little piece of heaven on earth! This area has something to challenge and meet the interests of everyone. For outdoorsmen, Johnson County has some of the finest and most diverse scenic beauty and recreational facilities in the state. Recreational opportunities abound for hunting, fishing, canoeing, hiking and camping. Educational facilities range from public-school kindergarten to the University of the Ozarks, a fouryear, liberal arts college. Area industry is just as diverse. Industrial pursuits range from Tyson’s chicken legs to Sara Lee’s Leggs panty hose. Life is good in Johnson County! — Mike Jacobs Johnson County Judge

Lakes to galleries, Johnson County has it all

rom mountain views that lend themselves to spectacular sunsets to clean and clear lakes, streams and rivers, Johnson County has many sights for nature lovers to take in and enjoy. The scenic combination of Johnson County offers an ideal setting for all types of recreational activities, including those at the county’s city parks, softball complex, baseball fields, soccer fields, swimming pool, riverfront pavilions, hiking trails and family fishing pond. For more involved outdoor excursions, the county has numerous opportunities, including Haw Creek Falls; Horsehead Lake, a 98-acre mountain lake with 10 family camping units that Johnson County Judge Mike Jacobs calls the “best-kept secret” in the state; Horsehead Hiking Trail; and the Wolfpen Recreation Area adjacent to the Mulberry River with canoe ramp access to the river. Also known for its annual Peach Festival, which takes place in mid-July, Johnson County is perfectly suited for orchards, berry farms and other agricultural pursuits. With a population of 25,540 in 2010, Johnson County has three main municipalities: Clarksville, the county seat; Lamar; and Knoxville. Johnson County is also home to the University of the

Ozarks in Clarksville, a private, Presbyterian-affiliated, fouryear liberal arts university located at 415 N. College Ave. The university houses the Stephens Gallery, providing its guests a showplace for their creations. The 1,500 square feet of the gallery provide ample wall and floor space in which to exhibit works in a variety of artistic mediums and styles, while the arched windows to the east flood the display area with a soft, pleasing light. Two permanent collections donated to the university are on display in the gallery, the Pfeffer Collection and the Arch H. Gould Collection. The county is also home to three school districts, Clarksville, Lamar and Johnson County Westside. The Jasper district also has a presence. Johnson County was formed from a portion of neighboring Pope County on Nov. 16, 1833, and was named Johnson honoring the first territorial judge of Arkansas, Benjamin Johnson. The county is home to several historic places of note, including the county courthouse, the Missouri-Pacific Depot and several historic homes. Whether a visitor’s interests are in the outdoors, history or art, Johnson County offers plenty to make a trip worthwhile.

Hit the trails, on foot or four wheels when it comes to these adventures, getting muddy can be half the fun

he Arkansas River Valley offers hiking, biking and walking trails â&#x20AC;&#x201D; and also boasts several great locations for all-terrain vehicles (ATVs). Four-wheeling is a fun, family activity appropriate for all ages. The U.S. Forest Service maintains several trails in the Ozark National Forest, many of which are within a 30-minute drive from Russellville. Moccasin Gap Trail is authorized for ATV, mountain bikes and horse travel by the U.S. Forest Service. Riders can enjoy cascading waterfalls as they follow the 28-mile trail that winds through pines and other hardwoods. There are several streams and areas for picnicking. Trails are colorcoded and maps are available at the trail entrance located about 25 miles north of Russellville, off State Highway 7. Mackâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Pines, located just a few miles before Moccasin Gap, is a family-owned and -operated business offering 28 miles of trails perfect for novice and expert riders.

When riders have mastered the marked trails, there are hundreds of miles of unmarked forest trails to explore. Maps of much of the Ozark Forest are available at local Forest Service offices. Honda of Russellville also carries maps, and sales associates are prepared to offer anecdotal advice. Riders should remember to follow ATV safety precautions and bring the appropriate GPS or other navigational tools. The U.S. Forest Service recommends wearing gloves, helmets and eye protection. Also remember to bring first aid kits and flashlights if you are riding at dusk or after, and pack plenty of drinking water and snacks. Four-wheeling is a great way for the family to spend the day together exploring the Arkansas River Valley, capturing the area flora and fauna on film. ooking for a romantic evening, but can’t afford dinner and a movie? Looking for a fun activity to enjoy with the family? Then hop aboard one of Lake Dardanelle State Park’s famous sunset cruises for a relaxing and educational experience you won’t soon forget. The cruises begin by loading a maximum of 20 guests on a pontoon boat, then setting out across the lake, where passengers spend the next hour taking in some of the most beautiful scenery the Arkansas River Valley has to offer — all while learning about the area’s abundant wildlife and history. The cruise passengers often have the opportunity to see an eagle’s nest on the pontoon boat’s voyage across the lake, and if they’re lucky, maybe even an eagle, Lake Dardanelle Park Interpreter Elizabeth Drake said. Drake said those hoping to see an eagle would have the best odds of sighting a bird in the early summer months; they’re usually gone by June. But that doesn’t mean there isn’t plenty of wildlife and scenery to take in if an eagle doesn’t grace your adventure with its presence. “(Passengers) get to see a lot of unique birds that come here

through the summer months,” Drake said. “They definitely get to see the eagle’s nest and just enjoy the beautiful sunset. And they’re always different. They’re never the same.” Joe Keating is one local who has enjoyed the cruise time and time again. “We’ve done quite a few tours. They’re really neat,” he said. “They’re a lot of fun.” The sunset cruises are free, but space is limited and a registration is required ahead of time. The park also offers many other activities, including educational seminars on the lake’s wildlife, camp safety, scavenger hunts, star gazing and kayak tours. Kayak tours cost $12 for adults, $6 for children ages 6-12 and are free for children 5 and under. Get interactive at Lake Dardanelle State Park visitors center lauded a paradise within a paradise

ature lovers coming to the Arkansas River Valley will delight in the variety of parks, reserves, campgrounds and lakes available to enjoy with little cost, and the Lake Dardanelle State Park Visitors Center is the proverbial cherry on top. “The Visitors Center here is a nice facility,” Andy Thomas, superintendent of Lake Dardanelle State Park, said. “I’ve worked for Arkansas State Parks for 33 years and I literally remember the time when the governor would come in, (and) we would have to pull the boards off the back of buildings and nail them on the front to make them presentable.” In 1996, Arkansas passed Amendment 76, an eighth-cent conservation tax that benefits the state parks, and led Arkansas to become one of the country’s leaders in state parks systems. Opened in 2003, the Visitors Center boasts 8,000 gallons of aquariums that represent the Arkansas River, local tributaries and Lake Dardanelle. “The aquariums are really neat,” Thomas said. “They’re set up like the river system is. We have the big tanks, the tributary tanks

that have species in them you would find in the lake’s tributaries, and they feed into the river tanks.” One of the biggest attractions to the youngsters who visit the park is the aquatic turtle touch table, where kids can interact with live turtles. There are also several snakes that kids and adults alike can admire, as well as a honeybee exhibit. Five interactive, touch-screen computer kiosks feature information on aquatic resources and the history and culture of the Arkansas River Valley, and have age settings to tailor the information to the viewer. Every week, the Arkansas River Valley Arts Center shows local artists’ work in the rotating exhibit at the Visitors Center. Park interpreters host environmental education programs throughout the year in the center’s state-of-the-art classroom with digital projectors and surround sound. In 2010, 20,000 local kids gained course credit at their schools through the programs. “We have some great educators out here, and we have a great partnership with our River Valley schools,” Thomas said. “We’re

an extension of their classrooms. They can come out here and study micro-invertebrates or anything.” The classroom, which opens up to a balcony that overlooks Lake Dardanelle, has also become a hot spot for weddings. The facility sits on the shore of Lake Dardanelle, providing breathtaking views of the lake and something for every visitor to enjoy. The park also provides pavilions, launch ramps, a marina, bicycle and kayak rentals and a hiking trail, and has provided more and more people with a safe, economical vacation spot.

“People are staying closer to home, with the gas prices the way that they are,” Thomas said. “They’re not going to Disney World or Gulf Shores. I think they’ve been to the casinos — been there, done that. They’re looking for a quality vacation that’s economical.” The park has changed a great deal during the last few years. What began as mainly a camping destination has blossomed into a premier site for environmental education, conservation and community pride.

ocated in the heart of the Arkansas River Valley, Pope County provides a beautiful backdrop for a variety of industrial, farming and recreational activities. In the early 1800s, the Osage claimed what is now Pope County as part of their hunting grounds. The area became part of a Cherokee reservation in 1817, but a new treaty moved the Cherokee into Oklahoma in 1828. In 1829, Pope County was the first Arkansas county to be formed out of the former Cherokee reservation. Home to 61,754 residents at the latest census, the county is the 13th most populous in the state. Municipalities within the county include Atkins, Dover, Hector, London, Pottsville and Russellville. Russellville, the county seat, is home to 27,920 residents. The county hosts five K-12 school districts, and Arkansas Tech University, an

accredited four-year university located in the heart of Russellville, was founded in 1909 and currently offers more than 70 degree programs. In addition to strong educational programs, Pope County is also home to a diverse labor force. Several Fortune 500 companies have facilities in the county, including Firestone Tire and Rubber Company, ConAgra, Dow Chemical, Tyson Foods and International Paper. he Russellville School District’s dream of building a performing arts center to serve the Arkansas River Valley finally came to fruition in 2012, when the multi-purpose Center for the Arts hosted its grand opening with the student production performance of “Annie Get Your Gun.” The center has since staged concerts by Edens Edge, American Idol Kris Allen and The Singing Men of Arkansas, as well as a number of community activities.

The grand performance hall has seating for 1,880; boasts an orchestra pit; and is designed to support local musicals and theatrical performances, as well as state and national Broadway shows, concerts, symphonies, ballets and other dance performances. “The center truly is the dream of so many in the area,” operations manager Wendy Sparks said. “With the community’s support, we’ve created something beautiful and functional which will provide a much-

needed service for years to come.” The center has state-of-the art sound and lighting systems, managed by Daniel Stahl, and is available for organizations to rent for conventions, luncheons, dinner parties and galas. Make a one-of-a-kind carriage stop Potts inn takes visitors back in time to historic stage POST

efore the Civil War started 150 years ago, a home modeled after the great houses in Pennsylvania served as a Butterfield Overland stagecoach stop legendary for its food and respected as a comfortable boarding place for travelers and local visitors. Potts Inn, the only known scheduled stop between Little Rock and Fort Smith, was built in the 1850s at the foot of Crow Mountain by Kirkbride Potts, a young bachelor who came to the Arkansas River Valley in 1828. He married Pamelia Logan, whose family founded Logan County, south of the Arkansas River. Kirkbride decided to mine for gold in California in the 1840s and wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t successful. He returned, began construction on the two-and-a-half-story home in the 1850s and finished eight years later. The functional frontier home became a stage depot stop and a well-known social center between Memphis, Tenn., and Fort Smith in those early days. The rooms on both the first and second floors are square, flanking a 12-foot-wide central hall. The parlor was used for state

occasions, tea parties and musicals. All of the Potts family daughters were married in front of the fireplace. Governors, military officers and Cherokee chiefs shared the hospitality and delicious fare assured by Mrs. Potts. The home also served as the first post office in the area. In 1857, the U.S. government passed legislation to establish an overland mail route to transport mail and passengers to California. John Butterfield of New York was awarded the contract, and the Potts home was a scheduled stop on the Butterfield Overland mail route. The stagecoach traveled almost 3,000 miles one way, and organizers accomplished a set goal with the first trip in September 1858, taking less than the allotted time of 24 days. In 1970, the home was obtained by Pope County with the purpose of converting it to a museum after renovations were completed. Maintained by the Pope County Historical Foundation and listed in the National Register of Historic Places, Potts Inn is home to the original well house and smoke house, as well as several cabins on the grounds that display other facets of local

history. Among them are the original postal desk used by Potts; the baby buggy Pamelia used to ferry her 11 children; a rocking chair Kirkbride brought with him from Pennsylvania; boards that were hand-planed, with marks of the plane bits still visible; bricks used in the nine fireplaces made on the premises, including the molds and racks used to make the bricks; and doors and windows, many still with the original glass panes, that were brought by keel boat up the Arkansas River. Another building is home to 100 years of hats â&#x20AC;&#x201D; one from each

year â&#x20AC;&#x201D; and dolls adorned with replica dresses and gowns worn by every first lady of Arkansas and the United States at their inaugural balls. Potts Inn is also part of Pottsvilleâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s National Historic District that includes the Pottsville Citizens Bank, which opened in 1913 and was robbed by two men in Santa Claus suits in 1920; the Falls and Sinclair Grocery Store, which was built prior to 1880; and a cattle dipping vat that signifies the importance of agriculture in the river valley.

libraries Pope County Library System

The Pope County Library System consists of the Russellville Headquarters Library and three branches in Atkins, Dover and Hector. In addition, the system utilizes a bookmobile for community outreach programs in the county. Russellville Heritage Hall, adjacent to the Russellville Headquarters Library, is available as a community meeting room. The building is the former library and is designated as an historic building on the National Registry. The library system is funded by a one-mill county property tax approved by county voters in 1997. The library is governed by an appointed five-member administrative board. The board meets the third Wednesday of each month at 4 p.m. The library’s website, popelibrary.org, includes information about programs offered, a link to the library catalog, links to more than 125 sites, genealogy information, the family index for genealogy, an auto repair and small engine repair reference center and accelerated reading lists for local schools. Patrons with a Pope County library card can access their account and renew their books or put books on hold. Patrons can also use Heritage Quest and Proquest at home. The library has several children’s and young adult programs each week for all branches. Shawn Pierce is the library director. • The Russellville Headquarters is located at 116 E. stroll through downtown Russellville isn’t complete without a stop at the historic Missouri-Pacific Depot, according to Betsy McGuire, executive director of Main Street Russellville. The depot is a place where the city’s history meets the world of today. The first depot, built in 1880, was the transportation hub of the time, with rail travel a popular way to visit far-away places. The current depot, built in 1916 and put in use by 1917, replaced the former just in time to be put to use helping transport troops during World War I. A rehabilitation of the old building began in 1999, offering a “community gathering place in the heart of the city,” McGuire said. “We’re not an official museum,” she explained. “But we’ve tried to do something with the history of rail travel.” The depot has a history room — the former freight room — with historical information, displays and relics from the past. The original baggage scales, with two missing elements, grace the center of the room alongside a toy train display and a stage area filled with memen-

tos from bygone eras, including a manual typewriter and old advertising posters. The main entrance, formerly used by the ticket agent and station master, features historic displays, photos and a shoeshine stand that was in use from 1940-80 and survived a fire that destroyed a nearby shoe store. The telegraph room boasts the original battery pit that supplied power to the telegraph machine. The rail system arrived in Russellville in 1917 and stopped its passenger service in the 1960s. The train depot was used for freight service until the 1980s. The rumble of passing trains can still be heard and felt several times each day, though, and it testifies to the depot’s continuing importance to the growth and development of Russellville. “I sometimes worry about the building,” McGuire said. “It shakes and trembles as the trains go by, and then I think, this has withstood nearly 100 years of trains going by.”

One of Yell Countyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s favorite traditions is its annual Yell Fest, featuring a carnival, crafts, food, fireworks, musical entertainment, games, pageants and, of course, a yelling contest. In 2013, the 24th annual Yell Fest will take place May 10-11 at Veterans Riverfront Memorial Park.

Yell county

ell County was established by the state Legislature in November 1840. The county covers an area of about 930 square miles. Yell County was named after the second governor of Arkansas, Archibald Yell. There are many diverse industries in Yell County, but most revolve around agriculture, such as timber, poultry, cattle and crops. Tourism and recreation play a major role in Yell County’s economy. The area has many lakes and mountains and is part of two national forests. Lake Dardanelle, Nimrod Lake and Blue Mountain Lake all offer a variety of outdoor activities such as boating, fishing, skiing and swimming. The crown jewel of Yell County is Mount Nebo State Park. It rises 1,000 feet above the Arkansas River Valley and has cabins, campsites, picnic sites, a swimming pool, hiking trails and the most breathtaking view of the surrounding valleys. ell County provides a multitude of outdoor opportunities, from camping and hiking in Mount Nebo State Park — observing or partaking in hang gliding off those very bluffs — to fishing or boating the plentiful six lakes and three rivers countywide. Take a few days to tour Brearley Cemetery in Dardanelle, the Kimball House on Front Street in Dardanelle, Mountain View Farm in Plainview, Spring Lake Recreation Area in Stafford, the Mickles Bridge in Mickles or the Ward’s Crossing Bridge in Plainview along with the other 16 locations on the National Register of Historic Places in Yell County. The Arkansas River borders the northern portion of Yell County, near the county’s largest city, Dardanelle. In the late 1800s, a pontoon bridge was constructed, allowing traffic to pass from Pope County into Yell County. The bridge was famously marked the longest pontoon bridge in the world and

operated until 1929. It has since been replaced by a four-lane, steel bridge. Yell County is poultry-prominent. Poultry production is the most significant industry in Yell County. There are numerous poultry farms and three major processing plants. Agriculture in general is a prominent source of employment for area residents. Soybeans, rice, corn, row crops and hog and cattle operations are a common visual aspect up and down major highways and dirt roads alike. Yell County hosts a multitude of summer festivals where small towns, friends and family gather to exhibit the best they have to offer: a sense of kinship, community and opportunities. For nearly two centuries Dardanelle has played a significant role in the history of not only Arkansas but also the nation. From the signing of a major treaty with the Cherokee to the completion of the first lock and dam on the McClellan-Kerr Navigation System nearly a century and a half later, Dardanelle has basked in a heritage without parallel west of the Mississippi. The signing of the Cherokee treaty and the completion of the first lock and dam paved the way for social and economic growth in separate centuries yet there is a bond shared by these two historical events. The treaty was signed under the embracing arms of two giant White Oak trees, the presence of which caused the execution of the important documents to become known as the Council Oaks Treaty. It was only fitting that these same two oak trees, only a short distance downstream from Lock and Dam 1, witnessed the taming of the Arkansas River, turning it into an inland corridor unmatched in economic potential. Through extensive research, botanists have determined the Council Oaks are the oldest White Oak trees in Arkansas and one existed long before Columbus first set foot on this continent.

Scan the vistas from Mount Nebo sunrise or sunset, the yell county peak’s overlooks are sure to please

ew events are as peaceful and relaxing as a sunset, and you’ll have no trouble finding one in the Arkansas River Valley — especially if you make your way to Sunset Point. Each evening, Mount Nebo State Park attracts people from all areas seeking to catch the final moments before dark.

State Highway 155 loops around the 1,350-foot mountain and leads drivers past the visitor center and onto Sunset Point, which is littered with benches and other places to relax and enjoy daylight’s end. “Some people sit out on the rocks and watch the sunset,” park superintendent

Mike Hall said. “People staying here go to see it, and then sometimes people even from out of town want to come by and watch.” A sunset isn’t the only event to be enjoyed at Nebo. There are many activities — and a swimming pool — to help beat the heat.

Directions to mount nebo:

From Dardanelle, go west on State Highway 22, then turn left onto State Highway 155, traveling for about six miles until you reach the park. Please note that 155 is steep, zigzags and includes hairpin curves. Trailers longer than 24 feet should not attempt the climb.

Sunrise or sunset, the views from Mount Nebo are worth the drive.

Should you be lucky enough to still be in the Arkansas River Valley in late summer, the park hosts the End of Summer Hang Glider Fly-in in August. During the event, some of the hang gliders who frequent the mountain will drop by. Mount Nebo is one of only two parks in the state offering launch sites for

hang-gliding enthusiasts, making it as unique as it is picturesque. Those in attendance at the fly-in will be offered a crash course in how to set up and operate hang gliders. “They’ll be flying off the mountain if the weather conditions are right,” Hall said. “The big factor is that the weather has to

Most folks can’t remember just exactly when the sign was erected, but longtime residents generally agree the first sign was placed in the 1960s. “Someone just brought it up that we

needed to put a sign on the mountain for the Razorbacks,” Austin said. Elmo Haney, another longtime resident of Atkins, said the sign made sense because so many people in the area are supporters of the Razorbacks and the University of Arkansas. Over time, the sign has become part of Atkins’ culture.

When you mention you’re from Atkins, they say ‘Oh, you’re where that Razorback sign is,’” Haney said, adding “it used to be we were recognized by the pickle plant — usually because of the smell — but most everyone now mentions the Hog sign. It’s very visible and it shows our support for the Razorbacks.” The original sign was painted as an effort by many community members, Austin said, and the Junior Chamber of Commerce club — or JCs, as they called themselves — raised the money for the supplies. One of the first things that happened after the original sign was a phone call placed by the director of the Arkansas State Police to the JCs, Austin said. Apparently, just prior

to the sign’s inauguration, a similar sign was stolen from the southern part of the state. He said the director was wondering if the residents had inadvertently purchased a stolen sign, but was quickly assured the residents had created the sign themselves in the school gymnasium. The first few signs, which, over the years, have had to be replaced due to age or vandalism, were made of wood. The most recent sign is estimated by Austin and Haney, respectively, to be about 10 or 15 years old, and is made of durable metal.

Atkins’ newest sign was placed by a new group of community organizers in Atkins, People for a Better Atkins, after the JCs disbanded several years ago. Austin noted the sign has begun to fade somewhat, and at some point in the future a decision will have to be made about how to restore its shine. One thing’s for sure: The Atkins Razorback sign will be around for years to come, giving Razorbacks fans yet another reason to call the Hogs on the way to the game. Give it a try, won’t you?

downtown fall festival & chili cookoff Russellville’s Downtown Fall Festival & Chili Cookoff is a fun-filled street festival that takes place each year on the last Saturday in October. This day-long celebration harkens back to the “good ol’ days” when carnivals set up on the streets of downtown Russellville. Start the day off by joining in the Friends of the Depot omelette breakfast. Throughout the day, enjoy a chili cookoff, pie contest, races, arts and crafts, an antique car show, and games, rides and live entertainment. This year’s Fall Festival will take place from 6:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 26 in the downtown historic district.

Continue for about 4.5 miles, then exit onto State Highway 9 South. After about 5.5 miles, turn right onto State Highway 154 West, which will lead you into the park.

ooking for a place to enjoy the outdoors? Look no further than Petit Jean State Park, a breathtaking area that’s more than worth the trip. “The park is very unique,” said Theresa Herrick, a recreation and park administration professor at Arkansas Tech University in Russellville who previously worked for state parks. “If you’re a newcomer, it’s just a wonderful place to drive up to, especially from Russellville. In 30 minutes, you can be up in a whole new area. The views from up there are just awesome, and there’s so much to do.” Petit Jean offers some of the most beautiful sights and diverse nature-oriented activities the state has to offer. Visitors have a choice of 10 trails to hike, ranging in difficulty from gentle strolls to serious challenges, as well as fishing at Lakes Bailey and Roosevelt. “Hiking the trails is just wonderful. There’s so many available to hike,” Herrick said. The park offers boat rentals from Memorial Day through Labor Day, allowing those who didn’t bring their own crafts to test the

waters. It also boasts an array of facilities, including two swimming pools, two playgrounds and tables perfect for picnicking. Visitors also have the option to spend their outdoor retreat in one of more than 30 cabins Petit Jean State Park offers, some modern and some rustic. The cabins include fireplaces and amenities, but the park also features more than 100 campsites for those inclined to enjoy a weekend retreat in a tent. “It’s a great destination tourism area, because everything you need is there,” Herrick said. “Arkansas is one of the best-kept secrets for outdoor recreation in the country. It’s just a dreamland for people that love hiking or river rafting or just spending time in the wilderness.” Petit Jean was briefly considered for designation as a national park in the 1920s, but was deemed too small. Directions to the museum of automobiles: From Petit Jean State Park, drive east on State Highway 154 for about three miles before turning left onto Jones Lane. The museum will be on the right.

n addition to a nature lover’s paradise, Petit Jean Mountain also offers the Museum of Automobiles, which contains more than 50 vehicles, the oldest dating to the early 1900s and some as current as the 1950s. “The museum portrays the evolution of the automobiles,” said Buddy Hoelzman, director. “There’s hardly anything that has had more effect on our development than the automobile, especially the first 100 years of the production of the automobile.” A vast array of cars are on display, including a 1904 Oldsmobile French Front, a 1920 Ford Model TT School Bus and a 1923 Star Station Wagon. The museum also showcases motorcycles and antique guns, license plates, gas pumps, arcade machines and a piano. “Our exhibit is from 1904-67. We’ve got 50-plus automobiles,” Hoelzman said. “We’re very proud of our Arkansasbuilt Climber automobile, which was built in Little Rock from 1919-23. We also have a 1957 Chevrolet convertible, which was very popular. Really, each one has its own unique attributes.”

Winthrop Rockefeller founded the museum in 1964, and the collection has been augmented since to include more automobiles and memorabilia. The museum is open year-round from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. every day except Christmas, and tickets cost $10 for adults, $9 for seniors and $5 for students aged 6–17.
