e are thrilled to be celebrating our five year anniversary of RSVP Montgomery. It seems like just yesterday we were working on our business plan, building the RSVP logo and knocking on the doors of many businesses asking them to believe in our product and partner with us. The past five years have been full of challenges and milestones, but mostly positive rewards. Amazing relationships have been built within our creative team, the media, RSVP advertisers and our supportive readers and event followers. A simple thank you does not really cover it so we want to dedicate this issue to the people who make RSVP happen. We wish you prosperity and success in 2013. Happy New Year!

FIVE Celebrates

By: Amanda Shaw Morrison

5 years. Thirty issues. Endless gratitude.

To our readers and supporters, RSVP Montgomery gives our most heart-felt “thank you.” To celebrate our community and its people is the very reason we exist and there is no occasion more suited to pause and reflect than an anniversary. As we celebrate our 5th, we invite you to join along as we journey through the answer to a question we’re often asked – “How did you get started?”

In looking back, our story is not what you might expect. There was nothing textbook about our business approach- just two friends with a shared passion. Most remarkable is that we didn’t know anything about the publication industry, yet in an economic time where advertising budgets are tight, we continue to grow.

Unlike Montgomery’s most popular magazine at the time of our start, we were not a household name. We are happy to say that RSVP Montgomery is now a recognized brand throughout our community. Quite simply, we are humbled and we have never forgotten what drives our success - you.

To commemorate this occasion, enjoy five lessons we’ve learned along the way. As we share this personal story we hope to return the gift of inspiration you’ve given over the years to RSVP Montgomery, or as this story reveals, “The Little Magazine that Could.”

Feature Story

Discover Your Gifts Before RSVP Montgomery was even a thought, Kim and I volunteered to plan our 10th high school reunion. It was during this time that we discovered our shared enthusiasm for planning events. We weren’t easily deterred as our classmates expressed concern over cost and we quickly punted our first plan for something more affordable and casual. The pay-off for us that evening was watching everyone have a good time. We recognized our undeniable synergy and passion for bringing people together. This event laid the groundwork for our next idea.

Let Your Dream Lead You Originally our plan was to open a venue where we would also serve as the event planners to coordinate the needs of our guests. We were going to call it “R.S.V.P. Montgomery”, as in, “Rental Space Vogue Parties.” Those in our inner circle told us we were crazy, but our curious nature prevailed. Upon meeting with several architects and leasing agents, crunching numbers and weighing the risks, the only thing that stuck was the name. Well, the name and a few “I told you so’s.” This discovery phase was most important because it pointed us towards fulfilling our dream. You see, each time we would meet with someone and tell them about our “idea”, we would be sure to mention that we wanted to reverse the opinion of “There’s nothing to do in Montgomery.” We had been guilty of saying that ourselves, but we wanted that belief to change and had a fervent desire to bring something positive to the community. If we had never considered opening a venue,

22

RSVP JAN/FEB 2013

RSVP Montgomery as a publication would not exist. Fate stopped by in the form of our friend, Eric Duggan, who offered to meet us at the space we imagined leasing. As an owner of Eastside Grille, we wanted his advice on our venue’s prep kitchen but he gave us far more than that. Eric suggested we subsidize our venue rental income by having a small publication that showcased events and would be supported through advertising dollars from businesses like limousine companies, florists, bridal boutiques, etc. He even offered to introduce us to the guy who sold Bass Magazine. This all sounded good; however, other than reading them, we had no clue about publications. As I worked my full-time job, some days to me it felt like a pipe dream, but Kim remained laser-focused. This quote from Oprah Winfrey describes it best: “It’s only when you make the process your goal that the big dream can follow.” Little then did we know, a big meeting on the horizon was about to change everything.

Ask and Receive This is the lesson we’ve witnessed a million times over. It’s landed interviews with people we never thought possible and the reason why we could take on an endeavor completely out of our realm of expertise. As suggested by Eric, Kim called local publishing icon Karl Dabbs. She laughed recalling her initial finesse, starting the conversation with something like “Hi, Karl. You don’t know me from Adam, but…” Clearly she phrased it in a way that caught his attention, as he did agree to meet with her and discuss this idea for an eventrelated magazine that would showcase both social activity and the individuals who are making things happen in the River Region. Kim recalls, “Meeting with Karl was intimidating. Anyone who knows him will tell you he doesn’t say much, but when he does – listen. He is full of wisdom.” About

two weeks later she received the news that Karl and his team did in fact want to lend direction in getting RSVP Montgomery going, and this group remains on our advisory board today. We are still amazed at the willing hearts of those who not only listened to us in the beginning, but said “Yes.” We were selling ads when there was no tangible product. Completely green, we were coming up with magazine sections, articles and ideas that our publishing advisors found clever. What we lacked in knowledge, we made up for with enthusiasm, and to this day, we never fail to ask.

Value Friendships So often in life, we only learn the value of something once it is gone – especially friendship. Navigating through the unchartered course of starting a business tested our closest relationships and made way for new ones. While some friends are only meant to be in your life for a time, a lifetime friend is irreplaceable. It took a bumpy start for us to realize that our most important desire is to first honor our bond of friendship, which intrinsically strengthened the business. Working in an environment where we have complete freedom to be ourselves, express our ideas freely and make mistakes without fear of judgment allows us to create a sum greater than our parts. We are continually blessed as we bring the pages of each issue to life surrounded by kindred spirits who share our passion for RSVP Montgomery. The value of our publication’s content is most meaningful to us in that it represents the collaborative value of friendship.

Never Lose Faith Do you ever look back and applaud yourself for how far you have come? More often, it’s human nature to regret our mistakes and fear the unknown. At RSVP, we are constantly reminded that it’s okay if we don’t have all of the answers. We are not meant to. That is why we have faith. That’s all we started with and on days when our resources are low – it’s literally all we have left. Faith in our ideas.

Faith in our community. Choosing to take the risk was worth every life lesson and like the pages in our magazine, we have grown. We had no magic formula. With the continued support of you, our readers, we have faith to continue providing the River Region Guide to All Things Social.

featuring military aviation the bar will also pay tribute to the uninhibited spirit of flight and to those that have flown, including strong emphasis on honoring those brave men and women aviators who have served their countries in times of conflict.

On Monday, December 17th, 2012, a new establishment opened its doors on Commerce Street, exactly 109 years to the day after Wilbur and Orville Wright’s historic flight at Kitty Hawk. AviatorBAR is a dramatic, museum quality space filled with artifacts, memorabilia and replicas of aircraft through the ages….AND, of course, a copious collection of beer, wine, cocktails and libations of the finest sort! The development team has created an astonishing entertainment parlor based on the express objective of providing the ultimate environment for “drinking, thinking, relaxing and reflecting.” The entire experience should evoke visions of the romantic era of the 1940s when freedom and world peace were very much in peril. Beyond

Architect / Developer Mike Watson and the talented team of design professionals at 2WR Architects has transformed the space of the circa 1881 Anderson Block Building on historic Commerce Street using an understated industrial style very similar to their adjacent project AlleyBAR. The main room and mezzanine of AviatorBAR encompass approximately 3500 square feet of space and another 5000 square feet is dedicated to “The Hangar”, a music hall which features live entertainment and special event space. The Anderson Block Building is the oldest structure on Commerce Street and is included in the National Register of Historic Places. It was built by Messrs. J. F. Joseph and Sven Anderson as a warehouse and grain depot with easy access to rail and river. It is mind-bending to muse that over 140 years later the building is still being used to warehouse and distribute grain, albeit in a much more enjoyable and distilled state !

t high noon on February 15th, 1910, Wilbur Wright stepped from a train onto the landing at Montgomery’s Union Station. At that precise moment the economic fortunes of our city changed forever. Within a couple of days Wilbur had been given the proverbial “keys to the city” and the world’s first Civil Aviation Flight School was soon founded in the middle of a 100 acre cotton field on the site of what is now Maxwell Air Force Base.

38

RSVP JAN/FEB 2013

Lounge areas will feature the history of early local military installations at Maxwell (Aviation Repair Depot #3 “ARDMONT”), Taylor, Moton and Gunter Fields along with a tribute to the legendary Tuskegee Airmen, military pilot Aces, the London Blitz / Battle of Britain and catastrophic events such as the crash of the Hindenburg and the Lost Squadron 19 of Bermuda Triangle fame. A definite eye catcher is the war bird nose-art inspired “babe” riding a 500 pound bomb above the bar! Also included in the exhibits are a life-like B-17 bomber gunner in authentic battle gear, a captain from the Army Air Corp in full dress uniform as well as the pilot’s canopy of an F-16 fighter jet transformed into an interactive photo booth! The theme is definitely “retro” with emphasis on midcentury 1900s aircraft and the period of aviation history surrounding World War II. AviatorBAR is dedicated to honor “The Greatest Generation” of Americans who lived or died in those stressful times. A special recognition is given to Mason Watson, the brilliant young man who constructed the hundreds of airplanes on display throughout the venue. The staff is sharply attired in period military uniform and early 1940s style and the music is “big band swing” as was performed by the incomparable Glenn Miller, a former Maxwell AFB officer. AviatorBAR does not offer a full dinner menu but can provide light fare and traditional bar snacks. Thematic “shots” and cocktails are served in bomb-shaped glasses and include numerous aptly named concoctions such as: Aviation, AirRaid, Kamikaze, JaegerBomb, B-52, Dive-Bomber, Red Barron, Atomic Bomb, etc. Only a block away from the spot where Wilbur Wright changed history in 1910, AviatorBAR will set the tone for a new age of entertainment in a revitalized downtown Montgomery….Capital Cool. Asked about his inspiration and motivation for creating AviatorBAR, Watson responded “a big part of the idea for an “aviation” themed entertainment venue came from my visits to historic Pensacola years ago and my fascination with the ambiance inside a bar called “Trader Jon’s” owned and operated by an ex-military barkeep named Martin Weissman.” Trader Jon’s was a popular destination for officers and aviators stationed at Naval Air Station Pensacola, including the crews of the famed Blue Angels. The venue was filled with aviation memorabilia and artifacts and was an iconic social and cultural gathering place until it closed in 1998. As to the paramount goals behind his efforts Watson replied, “our mission was threefold….1) create another high quality venue in the downtown entertainment district to maintain the revitalization momentum, 2) pay tribute to the vital role of aviation in the history and economic vitality of our city and 3) create a place that Montgomery can be proud to share with our many military visitors….and a place that those visitors can call their own.”

River Region Facial Plastics opened the doors of its new, state of the art facility in April 2012. Led by Dr. Michael Bowman and Dr. Thomas Cawthon, who work together at Montgomery Otolaryngology as well, RRFP strives to provide patients with the highest level of care in a private and comfortable environment. Every patient starts with a consultation, which helps the doctors create a customized and specific beauty plan to ensure you get the results you seek. The goal is always the same, regardless of what procedure is involved--- RRFP wants to achieve a harmonious balance in their results. They want their patients to leave looking better than before, but in a way that is natural and not indicative of having had anything done. What is it that separates RRFP from other medical spas in the area? For starters, both Dr. Bowman and Dr. Cawthon are members of the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. Whether you are there for a chemical peel, laser treatment or reconstructive surgery, the best way to guarantee that you get what you want is

to “trust your face to a facial plastic surgeon,” says Dr. Bowman. Both doctors are assisted by medical aesthetician Amy Bierly, who was recently featured in RSVP’s “The List” for her skills in the field of Dermaplaning and in the use of laser tools. Dr. Bowman and Dr. Cawthon have expertise in a variety of applications, both surgical and non-surgical. Specialized services that are offered at RRFP include Facial Rejuvenation, Nose or Ear Reshaping, Eyelid Lift, Lip Augmentation, Mole Removal, Scar Revision and injectables including Botox, Juvederm and Restylane. Below are pictures and more detailed descriptions of three of the most advanced procedures currently offered at River Region Facial Plastics. Be sure to “like” them on Facebook so you can view their newsletter and learn about current and upcoming specials.

Quick Lift™

If you are looking to reduce the effects of aging and loss of skin elasticity in a way that is minimally invasive, the Quick Lift may be for you. Described as a “mini face lift”, this procedure gives the full results of a face lift, but with less downtime and more natural looking results. It is an ideal procedure for someone who wants to diminish the signs of aging but doesn’t want to spend the money that traditional face lifts typically involve.

Sculptra™

Sculptra is a series of injections that can be done alone or used to complement a Quick Lift. When injected into the face, Sculptra stimulates the production of new collagen. This helps to replace the volume loss often seen around the temples and in the hollow areas beneath the cheekbone that often comes with age and loss of collagen. The subtle results are long lasting and a great way to reduce the amount of wrinkles and folds in the face.

Ultherapy™

Ultherapy is a non-surgical, non-invasive procedure that provides natural looking results with no downtime. Using ultrasound waves, Ultherapy is able to lift and tighten both the face and neck by restoring collagen, and the results allow you to see continued improvement in the appearance of your face for several months. “Ultherapy represents a whole new category within aesthetic medicine,” says Dr.Cawthon. “It is an ideal cosmetic procedure for those looking for natural yet noticeable results,” says Dr. Bowman. The entire procedure takes about an hour, and there is no bruising afterward. RRFP is currently the only place in Montgomery to offer this innovative technique. Pre-Treatment

KIM TRAFF

AMANDA SHAW MORRISON

After 13 years of working as a paralegal, Kim became stifled by her daily tasks and heeded the call of her inner social butterfly. Outside of work, Kim was often planning parties, class reunions or serving on the board of local women’s societies and recognized her passion for social activity. With no experience in publishing, journalism, marketing or entrepreneurship, she used her paralegal prowess to research her options and driven by blind ambition, cashed in her IRA account to start RSVP. Committed to her vision, she has tackled every challenge and mastered numerous skills over the past five years where she has served as owner and publisher of RSVP. Her energetic spirit is magnetic and her optimistic attitude sets the pace for her team. This contagious enthusiasm was best captured by the Montgomery Business Journal who described her as someone who “talks fast, walks fast, and whose business has grown fast.” She loves our city and has been an excellent cheerleader promoting all that our River Region offers. Kim serves on the board for the Montgomery Humane Society, Landmarks Federation and The Montgomery Zoo. Her favorite thing to do is watching daughters Shelby (18) and Payton (14) play volleyball, but everyone that knows her would agree that we cannot fail to mention the other love of her life, her black lab Roxy. Serving as the “social mayor” of Montgomery and balancing many other roles has earned her the nickname of “Kimpossible” by the RSVP girls.

In the beginning, there was Amanda Shaw Morrison. She and Kim first met in the sixth grade at Millbrook Junior High, where they engineered big bangs and a friendship that led to an even bigger idea twenty years later. As RSVP’s co-creator and first editor, Amanda contributed the titles for many of the sections still featured today such as: “The List”, “Two are Better”, “Socially Seen”, “Reply Yes”, and her favorite, “Singled Out.” Amanda has a natural gift for creative writing and her engaging style is warm and light hearted, setting the tone for all RSVP writers who strive to entertain our audience. In addition to the publication, Amanda has represented RSVP events as wedding planner, floral designer and the occasional ticket collector. Though her full-time role as manager of business development for HospiScript Services keeps her on the go, she remains our go-to girl for a witty one liner, feature story idea, or sound business advice. Amanda is a Phi Mu alum and graduate of Troy University with a degree in business administration and marketing. She enjoys singing, listening to music, and being a long distance “Aunt-a-Ger” to her talented niece and nephew, Reese and Noah Caldwell. Amanda recently found love in Branson, MO, when she rescued a stray kitten. She is most excited to enter this new year with a return to her maiden name - Amanda Shaw.

KARL DABBS In the pursuit of a mentor, Kim and Amanda were encouraged to reach out to Karl Dabbs, a local tycoon in the publishing industry. A graduate of The University of Alabama, Karl spent 17 years working for Southern Living Magazine where he began as staff accountant in their printing division and was eventually appointed controller of their corporate headquarters. In 1979, Karl started working with B.A.S.S. magazine as a controller wherein he later became V.P. of Finance and CFO and helped with negotiating the sale of the company to ESPN in April 2001. After the sale of B.A.S.S., Inc., Karl became involved with several businesses including serving as the proprietor of The Bulletin Board for seven years. Karl is currently the president and owner of Tidbits Media, Inc., Montgomery Business Capital, Inc., Dabwood Realty, Inc., Carmichael I-85 Properties, LLC, Dabbs Properties, LLC, Amalfi Partners, LLC, Montgomery Business Brokers, Inc., Dapper,LLC, and Polygon Leasing, Inc. “Karl is so full of wisdom yet very laid back. He doesn’t talk much but when he does, we listen because we know he knows what he is talking about,” Kim says. Karl and his wife Gayle have four adorable grandchildren. When he isn’t spending time with them, you can find him watching Alabama football or playing golf.

technically the best. KEN WOODARD When Kim and Amanda decided to start their own business, they met with Ken Woodard and Karl Dabbs about a location for their new entertainment venue. Part of the initial idea was a newsletter concept. After many meetings and conversations and much laughter, the magazine RSVP became the focal point of the business instead of the venue. Ken continues, as an Advisory Board Member, to consult with the girls in any area they may feel a need for a sounding board. Ken’s background is in publishing from American Broadcasting Company (ABC) in New York as well as B.A.S.S. ESPN OUTDOORS, and he is currently co-owner of Tidbits Media, Inc., a franchise operation with more than 150 publishing locations in the US and Canada. Ken is married to Marcia Woodard, the Deputy Director of The Montgomery Zoo, and together they are parents to Sara, Lindsey, and Chase. CARL. ADAMS CARL ADAMS When Tidbits owners agreed to mentor Kim and Amanda with their venture, Carl Adams, a design graduate of Auburn University Montgomery and creative director for a national publishing company for ten years, immediately became part of the RSVP team. After their initial meeting, Carl looked over the logo presented and said “This just won’t do… let me have a whirl at it.” He then created and produced the RSVP logo that has become branded and known throughout our River Region. Carl spent hours in phase one of RSVP before the magazine ever existed. He created the media kits, ad rates, deadlines, and taught the girls all about design specifications. “Carl is such an easy going, likable person and his style naturally fit with ours- he instinctively crafted a tangible look for our vision,” says Amanda. Carl has always taken pride in creating the vibrant layouts and over the past five years has put in many late night hours to ensure a deadline was met. “I will never forget Carl calling to tell us that the first issue was coming off the press. We all rushed over to the printers where he met us with champagne. It was like a baby was being born,” says Kim. Carl credits his extremely talented team of photographers and designers that he works with on the creative side of things, and the energetic, “never-stop” mentality of the RSVP girls. Speaking of girls, the number one girl in Carl’s life is his beautiful five-year-old daughter Caroline. She graced the pages of the second issue of RSVP, and it’s easy to tell that Carl is a proud father. “It’s kind of cool to think about it, because both Caroline and RSVP magazine have grown so much in the past five years,” says Carl. When not hard at work on his computer, Carl enjoys playing golf and WAKA kickball. He was recently voted “Life of the Party” by his WAKA teammates. He is also an avid Auburn football fan.

KEITH COUSINS One might say Keith and Kim were on a collision course to meet each other. That’s exactly what happened one night when Kim drove through the Cousins’ privacy fence, and a wonderful, trusted friendship formed. Since then Keith has proven to be a patient guide for both Kim and RSVP as a charter advisory board member. Keith has given his insights on business structure, strategic initiatives and financial planning. Keith strongly believes in RSVP and is determined to ensure that each issue and business decision meets with Kim’s original vision. Keith is an entrepreneur, thought leader, strategist, real estate junkie, technology geek, and frustrated fisherman. He is also a graduate of Robert E. Lee high school and Auburn University Montgomery. He is the chief operating officer at Triton Management Group, and worked previously as chief development officer and executive vice president of Movie Gallery, Inc., program control manager for Computer Sciences Corporation and director of development for KinderCare, Inc. Originally from Norfolk, Virginia, Keith is married to his bride, Melissa, of 23 years and they have two beautiful girls Victoria and Emily. They attend St. James UMC, and you can frequently find them at Lake Martin and Troy football games.

CRYSTAL STRICKLAND Crystal began working with RSVP as an intern in the summer of 2009. After graduating from Auburn University with a degree in apparel merchandising and minors in both finance and business administration, she became the full-time marketing manager and event coordinator for RSVP. Whether she was working with current advertisers , pursuing new businesses, putting together the calendar of events, directing photo shoots or handling RSVP social events, Crystal loved being a part of all aspects of the magazine and seeing each issue come to life. “I think one of my favorite parts of RSVP was planning the events—from weddings, corporate events, Pub Crawls to wine festivals…I truly enjoy meeting with clients and bringing to fruition their vision and dreams,” she says. She currently works for Gannett, but she still enjoys helping out in any way possible with the magazine. She credits family, her passion for weddings, flowers and antiques, as well as her time as event coordinator as some of the things that pushed her to also start her own business: Southern Posies – an event planning, floral design and prop rental company. When not working, you will find Crystal spending time with her husband, Trip, and their pet child, Dolly, at Lake Martin or their family farm in North Alabama. “I am truly thankful for my wonderful and supportive husband, amazing parents and great family and friends who have shown me that I can achieve anything through prayer and dedication.”

DARREN FREEMAN

JOSH MOATES

Darren Freeman joined RSVP as a contributing photographer in 2009. Since then he has been a valuable member of the creative team, providing photos of advertisers and covering area events. Hands down, Darren has covered more photo shoots than any other photographer in Montgomery. “He is so pleasant to work with. Whether it is a last minute shoot, an instant turnaround on pictures, or a photo booth for an event, Darren always finds a way to accommodate us with a smile,” says publisher Kim Traff. Darren comes with years of experience as an award-winning photographer, having worked for local, regional and national publications in addition to servicing clients throughout the River Region. His company, Darren Freeman Photography, specializes in weddings and events. When asked about the most rewarding photograph he has ever taken, Darren’s response is quick and decisive. “It was definitely when I had the chance to take a picture of my then three-year-old son -- he’s now 19 -- kissing a camel on the lips. Some things you just can’t plan.” When he was approached by Kim Traff to be one of RSVP’s contributing photographers he was delighted. “It was an opportunity to do something fresh and exciting,” he says,“And I find it to be just as enjoyable today as I did when I started.”

Josh Moates has been part of the RSVP team from the start. “The List” has been a standing assignment for Josh since the first issue, and one he won’t easily be giving up. “Shooting ‘The List’ has been a blast!” says Josh. “I really enjoy meeting people who make Montgomery awesome.” In fact, the Montgomery native was included in the very first group of local professionals featured in “The List,” and deservedly so. Josh dives into projects that fuel his passion for photography, including his companies Kim Box Photography, Indie Film Lab, and Shoot Fly Shoot. He’s often playing assistant and cheerleader to his wife, Aubrie Moates, during RSVP fashion and cover shoots. Josh also provides drool-inspiring images for RSVP’s food articles. His work has been featured in Alabama Magazine and Southern Weddings. Josh’s easy-going attitude and interest in people of all kinds makes him an important part of the RSVP team and their spirit. And a little humor is never a bad bonus, right? “I enjoying working with the RSVP crew and have grown close to them,” says Josh. “Hot chicks and photography make for a super easy day.”

CATHERINE CALLIGAS

BRYAN CARTER

Catherine Calligas and Kim first met on the Hampstead tennis courts where Kim pursued her to play on a tennis team. Soon after, she got an email from Catherine with a decline to join the tennis team but with an interest to write for the magazine and multiple ideas for articles… very good ideas. After seeing her writing samples, it was clear she would be an asset to the team. Catherine had been writing for RSVP for over a year when then editor Lindsey Rodgers married and moved to Georgia. Needing someone to fill her spot, Catherine stepped up to the plate with an “I got this” and has been handling the editorial duties since last October. She loves the opportunity RSVP has given her to meet and work with new people, and still enjoys contributing articles in addition to editing. Catherine and her husband Louis live in Cloverdale and are eagerly awaiting the arrival of their first child in early August.

Bryan Carter began working with RSVP as a designer in 2009 and quickly became not only a valued team member but one of the magazine’s biggest supporters as well. Never missing a release party and always free to help with social events, Bryan and his wife Lesli have done a little of everything in their time with RSVP. From cover design and ad layout to setting up booths for the wine festival, Bryan has always been willing to lend a hand when needed. Although we have seen less of Bryan since the recent birth of his son Nathan, he still works as a contributing designer and photographer. When asked about his involvement with RSVP, Bryan is quick to respond “It’s a blast! The team at RSVP is one of a kind; working with Kim and the girls is always exciting and there is never a dull moment. For a designer like myself, there is no better opportunity for me to be creative than through RSVP.” Bryan’s daughter Kaylee loves to visit the RSVP office and hang out with the staff, and has the potential to be a future RSVP girl herself! In addition to RSVP, Bryan works for several local, national, and international publications. He is an accomplished designer, published photographer, and guru of all things Mac. You can check out his website at www.carterphotodesign.com.

JAMIE (“JT”) AND LEANNE THOMPSON JT and Leanne Thompson met Kim through a Cumulus sales associate right after the first issue of RSVP was published in 2008. JT was selected to be on The List, and the partnership with RSVP began. For about three years, the radio station MIX103 aired the “Local Buzz”, where Kim, JT, and Leanne worked to get publicity for local events. JT is a gifted writer and contributor to RSVP for nonprofit organizations and entertainment. When JT and Leanne launched the River Region TV show, which highlights local businesses and events, they wanted to involve RSVP Montgomery. The girls at RSVP have made a great addition to the show as they are so connected and in the know about local events. You can visit them online at www.RiverRegion. TV for more information and show times. JT and Leanne are staunch supporters of RSVP and work hard to promote each new issue, as well as all of the RSVP and other local events taking place in Montgomery.

HARVEY & JIMMY STARLING The entire team at Publications Press, Inc. has been a joy to work with from the beginning. Harvey, the general manager, first met Kim and Amanda through Ken Woodard and Carl Adams before the magazine was published, and Jimmy, the production manager, was introduced when the magazine arrived for the first printing. They both knew the magazine had great potential and thought Kim was very likable and had all the personable attributes to make it work. Harvey advised Kim on the different paper types, printing processes and technical tips for web printing to improve her product. Jimmy has consistently been able to produce RSVP on a quick turn basis since the start and that alone has helped Kim and the girls grow RSVP. When they send out samples to potential customers, RSVP magazine is ALWAYS in the packet. “We are proud to be the printer for such a great product and people,” says Harvey. Publications Press, Inc. has grown with RSVP. They are currently completing an installation of a Heidelberg M1000BE web press that will greatly improve their quality and turn around, as well as allow them to employ more people from the tricounty area. Publications Press, Inc. currently has 62 employees in three facilities in Montgomery. “Everyone here is very blessed to be part of a great success story – RSVP Magazine!” Jimmy states.

BRAD SPEAR

MARY LACKEY BAILEY

Brad Spear actually got his start in writing with RSVP Magazine. One of his best friends, Carl Adams, is the creative director for the magazine. After reading several of Brad’s fantasy football updates (which are for league members only), he suggested Brad as a writer for the magazine. In his time at RSVP, he has written articles such as “A Romantic Death,” “Together We March,” “Release Your Dragon,” and “The List.” Brad says, “In my career, I’m always chasing that next number – whatever gives us new insight in the insurance industry.” As a research manager at Alfa Insurance, his work is dominated by math and numbers. While his job requires creativity, writing is a different creative release for Brad. “It’s fun to create something that feels like it is all yours, and RSVP gives me that,” Brad continues. A native of the small town of LaPine, Ala., Montgomery has always been “the city” to Brad. With the exception of his college years at Auburn University, he has lived in Montgomery since the age of 15. After graduating from Auburn, he began working as a computer programmer at Alfa Insurance in 2003. While working at Alfa, Brad also graduated from Jones School of Law, and he remains a licensed attorney. Brad and his five-year-old son Sidney (Sid) enjoy playing with their basset hound Aengus, golfing, or doing just about anything outside. Although he would debate the use of the term, Brad is also an avid runner, and has participated in some 13 half marathons.

After modeling for some of the fashion features and getting to know the girls at RSVP, Mary Lackey Bailey decided she wanted to be a part of the team. There were no positions available, but she wouldn’t accept no for an answer. Instead, Mary Lackey offered to volunteer and work any and all areas until something became available. It didn’t take long for that to happen, and she has been a valued full-time employee for over a year now. She works hard on our calendar of events to ensure that our readers know all the exciting things taking place in the area. When something needs to be delivered or picked up, Mary Lackey wins the award for being first to volunteer. Her sweet spirit and the way she genuinely cares about people are just two of her many endearing qualities. Mary Lackey studied art history at the University of Alabama, and has had a love for fashion since putting on her first pair of high heels at the age of two. When she’s not in the RSVP office, you can find Mary Lackey hanging out with friends, checking out the latest fashion trends, or on her way to the beach.

PEYTON DISMUKES Peyton’s history with RSVP began in the summer of 2011 as an intern. We knew Peyton was a team player when, on her second day as an intern, she offered a piece of her own clothing to a modelin-need on the set of a photo shoot. Half a year later, she began working for us part time and after graduating in May 2012 from Troy University with a bachelor’s degree in broadcast journalism and a contract in public relations, she became a full-time employee. Peyton is a huge asset to RSVP. Her spunky style, positive attitude and witty banter keeps the office lively and fun. While she has proved there is nothing she cannot do when it comes to RSVP tasks, her main responsibilities include building and sending the weekly Email Blast and maintaining the content and event calendar on our website. She also serves as a contributing writer and handles multiple advertising accounts. Although she is elated about starting a new chapter as the future Mrs. Andrew Flowers, she says she will miss her time at RSVP after she marries in April and moves to Jackson, Miss. Peyton says, “My favorite part of working for RSVP is seeing the eagerness of readers to get their hands on the new issue. We work so hard to pull it together and it is quite rewarding when people show up to the release party ready to enjoy its hot-off-the-press glory.”

MARK ANDERSON After completing his undergraduate coursework in rhinoceros studies at the University of Botswana, Mark Anderson gained international recognition for being the first person deported back to the U.S. for illegally immigrating to Mexico. Undaunted by this reversal, Mark then collaborated with renowned inventor Dr. James Howard Spork on their yet to be named utensil merging the fork and spoon (word on the street is that KFC is quite interested). Mark built upon this triumph by entering upon a literary career. After an extensive Craigslist search, Mark accepted a position as poet laureate of Turkmenistan for a salary of two million dollars a year. Saddened upon learning that this translated into about seventeen dollars and eighty-five cents U.S. , Mark retired to the backwoods of Montana concentrating his efforts on a political theory manifesto. Tragically, most of these writings were forever lost when his coauthor Ted’s cabin was raided by federal authorities while Mark had stepped out to pick up a pizza. Impervious to this temporary setback, Mark soldiered on in his chosen field and determined that his superior literary talent could best be employed writing for medium market social magazines. After a nationwide recruiting campaign and several thousand offers, Mark unsurprisingly selected RSVP, the only such publication entirely run by beautiful women. And so, the legend continues……

NICOLE PAULK Nicole Paulk has a gift for natural light photography. Although she works full time as a court reporter, she couldn’t resist her passion for the camera and began dabbling in photography 12 years ago. Now she owns Nikki P Photography and is a frequent contributor to RSVP. A loyal and reliable friend of Kim’s for over 25 years, she was excited to come on board as a contributing photographer. Known for her laid back disposition and contagious laugh, she has added spunk to many RSVP functions, such as the RSVP Riverfront Pub Crawls where she has spent hours hopping on and off trolleys capturing the night’s excitement. While Nicole specializes in family portraiture and senior portraits, she also does boudoir sessions and knows how to make a girl feel comfortable in her own skin. Nicole is married to Kris Flaherty and together they have three children, Payton (14), Dylan (13) and Olivia (12). In addition to photography, Nicole loves cats and has nearly a dozen at home. HIGH 5 PRODUCTIONS Barrett Bailey and Jon Cook teamed up to start High 5 Productions a little over a year ago and began working with RSVP this past year.Barrett and Jon enjoy each new project Kim throws their way. Whether it is capturing the latest release party with video, or creating an original cover photo showcasing the beauty of Montgomery, High 5 is always up to the challenge and delivers a product beyond expectations. In addition to their work at High 5, Barrett is a successful portrait artist and Jon has a personal training business at his gym Fitness Solutions. Both took time away from their main jobs to start High 5 and feel they have benefited from the exposure RSVP has given them. Not only are they important artistic contributors to the magazine and the city of Montgomery, they always bring their fun and playful sides into the mix at RSVP functions.

“It’s nice to have a local publication that takes advantage of the growing talent we have in this town. It’s always great to see your work on display and RSVP does a great job of getting the magazine to its viewers. Everywhere I go I see a copy and to pick one up and to see your work represented is a great feeling,” says Barrett. Barrett and Jon can be found shooting around town wherever the light is right on weekends and barhopping on their bobbers at night. “We hardly ever stop working. Some would call us workaholics. When you love what you do you don’t need a day off. Riding our bikes is our time to relax and de-stress and even then we have new projects formulating in our heads,” says Jon. High 5 Productions and RSVP look forward to continuing to work together and helping each other grow in the future.

EVAN G. COOPER

AUBRIE MOATES

Evan G. Cooper has become a familiar face behind-the-scenes at RSVP. His work with RSVP first began in 2009 while he was assisting and styling shoots at Kim Box Photography. Since then he’s become the leading man for all things aesthetic in RSVP feature shoots. He’s the guy that ensures all those little details look just right. You’ve seen his stylish touch on holiday features, the colorful outdoor BBQ fashion shoot, and the cover shoot of actress Carrie McLemore. Evan’s favorite shoot to date is the 2012 holiday shoot. “I love getting a project from Kim and taking it to the next level style-wise. I don’t think people realize the impact styling a shoot has until they see it first hand,” he says. Evan is the owner of the event planning and floral design company Evan & Co., and is no stranger to working with great teams. He leads the way in designing weddings, parties, and more; often with a staff of family and friends.Together with RSVP, Evan & Co. has shared both time and talent to help sponsor local events including Runway on the River and the Southern Bridal Faire. “I love working with RSVP because it’s just plain fun,” says Evan.“The girls and staff are always so upbeat and excited about putting out a local publication that is packed with personality.”

Aubrie Moates is no stranger to a camera. The years she spent modeling in front of the lens gave her a passion for beautiful images that she quickly transferred to her current role behind the camera as owner of Hello Gorgeous boudoir photography. At first, Aubrie was on the sidelines while husband Josh Moates worked for the magazine. Now you can find her shooting her own work for RSVP as she puts together fashion images for our Reply YES section. “As my photography hobby picked up, so did my desire to create beautiful shoots. So, I bumped my hubby out of the way—what does he know about fashion anyway?” she explains. She is usually accompanied by her own little tag-alongs on the RSVP set: son Ever, 3 years old, and a baby bump due in May. Aubrie is grateful to be part of RSVP’s creative team and the opportunity the magazine has given her to connect with the RSVP girls. “Shooting the fashion helps feed my creative side, now that I’m not in front of the camera anymore! Our shoots are ALWAYS a blast!” says Aubrie. “Aside from being the most stylish girls in Montgomery, these gals have hearts of gold. Each assignment is original and inspiring.” Since making Montgomery her home in 2009, Aubrie has created and sponsored events for organizations including the American Cancer Society and Joy to Life. Her bright personality and love for others shines through; and Aubrie says the RSVP family has helped make her efforts even more successful. “I’m so grateful for their involvement with my projects for local charities and the Southern Bridal Faire. Having the RSVP girls on board takes a project to the next level, with their energy, expertise, and reach.”

SUMMER PATTERSON

JOSH PITTMAN

Given their love of all things social, it seems natural that Kim and Summer Patterson met over seven years ago through a social organization and became friendly during their time working on its board. When work on the first issue of RSVP began, Kim thought Summer’s creativity and attention to detail would be a perfect fit for the magazine. Aside from producing ads for every issue of the magazine, Summer never turns down a request and has worked with RSVP on many of its productions, events, and fundraisers over the years. She says, “I’m always excited to work with Kim and the staff at RSVP because of their excitement for their work, and their appreciation of the people they work with and for on every issue and project. I love what RSVP does for the community and how it strives to promote great things in and about Montgomery.” Summer is art director at Matrix, LLC. and holds a bachelor of fine art with concentrations in graphic design and photography. She is married to Thomas Patterson and enjoys volunteer work, photography, and being at home with Thomas and the couple’s three dogs and four chickens.

Josh Pittman was the first videographer to work with RSVP. His business, The Bearded Man Film Co., has grown into one of the most successful video production companies in Montgomery. Josh says “It’s been one crazy ride. Montgomery is a city for small business. We have amazing leadership that’s created an environment where with just a little talent and a lot of hard work, a business can really grow.” One of Josh’s proudest achievements is making videos to help market the city. “I was asked to create a short film to highlight Montgomery’s role as the Capital of the New South. I gladly took upon the challenge. I’m so proud of what we have done with downtown. It’s an honor to be trusted to help shape how people see our great city.” Josh’s push toward social media is one of many things that sets his business apart from others. “How we market to people is changing right before our very eyes. Instead of spending thousands on TV like in the old model, there are ways to reach a larger, even more targeted audience for much less. Developing content for social media platforms is one of my favorite parts of the business.” When Josh isn’t working, you can find him behind his piano, cooking, or headed to an Auburn football game.

MARK LESLIE After seeing Mark Leslie appear on NBC’s “The Today Show”, the RSVP girls contacted him to see if he would be interested in critiquing food for their new Table Talk feature. “We instantly fell in love with Mark. He is so charismatic and has a refined palette having traveled the world,” says Kim. Mark loves to cook for anyone with an appetite, vacations in Italy every year, and lives to eat his way through every plate of pasta and cone of gelato placed before him. His first book, “Beyond the Pasta: Recipes, Language & Life with an Italian Family”, tells of his life in Italy while cooking with an Italian grandmother. His Beyond the Pasta app, named “New & Noteworthy” by Apple, includes photos, helpful videos, and more of Nonna’s family-style Italian recipes. He writes of his food experiences on his blog www.beyondthepasta.com and has a recurring bi-weekly cooking segment on “Alabama Live!” shown on WSFA-12, Montgomery’s NBC-affiliate. Athenians The Montgomery Country Club was transformed into a beautiful setting for guests to dance through the ages. The stage was set for a dance recital, a prom, a band party, and a wedding and each of five groups performed a dance to celebrate those momentous occasions. Master of Ceremonies Susan Woody introduced special guests, past queens, and the men of Les Dames. After the queen’s children and parents were introduced, the tableau began, the clocks were reversed and guests were taken back to their childhood through the days of prom, college band parties and what every girl dreams of… her wedding day, where the girls danced to “Going to the Chapel” and tossed bouquets. On November 9, 2012 the ladies of the Les Dames Mystic Society presented “Dancing Through Life” at their 56th annual ball at the Montgomery Country Club. The Queen, along with her fellow members of Les Dames, welcomed guests to a fun-filled evening celebrating special moments in the lives of women. The dances performed represented a special memory essential to every little girl’s dream come true.

As the performances came to a close, The Queen was escorted on stage by her father and then joined by her two children. The Queen’s dress was a turquoise, strapless mermaid style gown adorned with silver glitter pattern and an empire waist sash. A matching wrap and mask were custom made to compliment the gown. Following the tableau, the band Coconut Cowboys played music for all members and guests to dance through life, making the 56th annual Les Dames ball a night to remember.

The Searing Veil Not many people can say they wrote a novel and had it published before they graduated college, but Montgomery native Oliver L. Haynes IV can. Haynes, who is currently an undergrad at Rhodes College in Memphis, Tenn., is the author of “The Searing Veil,” his debut novel that has been in the works for four years. At the age of 18, Haynes began crafting a story of intrigue and adventure, of truth and deceit, and of hope and fate. It is a story that takes us across a fantastic world of fading existence, ultimately seeking to renew a sense of purpose in living. The setting of “The Searing Veil” takes place in a disaster ridden Earth of the future, but much of the book’s force is inspired by Haynes own adventures while traveling abroad in New Zealand and India after his high school graduation. Already receiving great reviews, we encourage you to pick up a copy of this book and see what the hype is all about.

The 63rd annual grand ball of The Krewe of Athenians celebrated the presentation of the lovely Miss Caroline Christian Clark as queen on Saturday, December 8, 2012 at The Renaissance Hotel. Guests were entertained with a humorous rendition of the ever popular tale of Beauty and the Beast. Queen Caroline, escorted by Mr.Robert Daniel Farris of Montgomery, welcomed her guests wearing an empire style A-line gown of soft silk shantung and chantilly lace that was seeded with hand sewn rhinestones and sequins. The gown was originally worn by her mother, Mrs. Susan Noble Clark, when she was queen of Athenians in 1984. Queen Caroline, a junior at Auburn University, had heard about the Athenians Ball as long as she can remember. Her grandfather, Jack Noble, was a member of the organization and attended the ball in 1960 when Mrs. Elmore Inscoe was the Queen. Following the ball, the queen’s parents hosted an after the ball breakfast at The House Restaurant in the Renaissance Hotel. On Sunday after the ball, the Montgomery Country Club ballroom is where the king welcomed guests and announced Queen Caroline and her court. As the guests of this beautiful brunch, the queen graciously thanked the krewe for the opportunity of not only reigning as the 2012 Queen of Athenians, but also to follow in the footsteps of her mother.

Batch 19 Pre-Prohibition Style Lager In 1919, beer was banned. Barrels were broken, breweries went under and recipes were lost. When beer came back 14 years later, it was never the same. That is until now, because in 2004, an old logbook was discovered in the brewery archives dating back before 1919. Batch 19 is inspired by the last batches of beer brewed before Prohibition made it illegal. Batch 19 is a Pre-Prohibition Style Lager made from an authentic recipe that delivers a bold, hoppy flavor that is surprisingly well balanced. It derives its bold taste from using a rare combination of hops, including Hersbrucker and Strisslespalt. This deep-golden lager is naturally filtered and unpasteurized with 26 IBUs and an assertive 5.5% ABV. Hersbrucker provides herbal notes while Strisslespalt delivers notes of black currant. We are aware of no brewer in America who uses this combination today. For more information on Batch 19 visit their website, www.batch19.com, like them on Facebook, www. facebook.com/batch19, or follow them on Twitter, @Batch19.
