f you can’t already tell, I’ve fallen hard for this city of ours. It won my heart long ago, and I’m excited beyond words to share each new issue that highlights all that Montgomery offers. I know some of you are still mourning summer’s end, but take heart. Football season and cooler weather is here, not to mention a plethora of other activities taking place this fall. We are excited to feature Hampstead’s Tipping Point House as this issue’s cover and feature story. This house represents exactly what RSVP stands for: the desire to entertain and be entertained. We had a blast doing the photo shoots and can definitely attest to how perfect this house is for socializing. Speaking of get-togethers, our Connections feature offers a great idea for gathering with friends and unleashing your creative spirit with a paintbrush and some wine! The girls at RSVP love working on the fashion articles and changed it up this issue from the usual hip and trendy digs to power dressing in the workplace. We pulled in some of our favorite local business women who know how to dress for success, and they look fabulous! We also reveal some of Montgomery’s best burgers, and when you get done reading Table Talk, your mouth will be watering. Whether we’re talking about the fashion, food or football, the girls at RSVP all agree that this is our favorite time of the year!

POWER Dressing By Peyton Dismukes

Photography by Aubrie Lemon Moates

The term “power dressing” made its appearance in the early 1980s when women really began making a scene in the corporate world. But long gone are the days of suit jackets with shoulder pads so high your peripheral vision is inhibited. And thank goodness pantyhose are no longer an everyday necessity. Fashion has evolved over time, just like women’s role in society. So, what does that mean for our modern day professional wardrobe? Just because you have to dress professionally

doesn’t mean you have to lose your sense of style. There are ways to dress work-appropriate and still maintain your individuality and feminine features. Women hold astoundingly powerful positions in today’s work force, and they didn’t get there by prancing into meetings wearing yoga pants with their hair piled atop their head. You might be asking yourself if what you wear to work really matters that much. Do people not value competence over personal

appearance? Well, I hate to bust your bubble, but people are constantly looking at and judging what you wear. Your superiors and clients are looking at your appearance as a reflection of the quality of your work and your work ethic. Dress as you want to be seen, and dress for the job you want, not the job you have. Take a cue from a few of Montgomery’s own professional women.

• In most job interviews, your attire plays a supporting role. Your outfit says a lot about you, so make sure it is speaking with an eloquent, capable tone. • Don’t confuse club attire with business attire. If you’d wear it for girl’s night out, don’t even think about wearing it for an interview. • Stay away from extreme colors. Navy, dark gray and black are always safe. Keep patterns subtle; you don’t want your outfit to be too loud. • Pay attention to details. Everything should be cleaned and well-pressed. • Be confident, and be yourself. No, this has nothing to do with your outfit, but you’re never fully dressed without a smile!

Work-appropriate ensembles are more than just the garb you’re wearing; you must also consider how you’re wearing the clothes. Become friends with your neighborhood tailor, and make sure your clothes actually fit you properly. Also, don’t skip the dry cleaners. There is nothing more unprofessional than dirty, wrinkly clothes. First impressions are crucial. Walk into a room and let your outfit speak for you. You’re intelligent, confident, beautiful and totally going to land that big account. By the way, where did you get those shoes?

singled OUT

Don’t Boil the Rabbit By Mark Anderson

Single people, it’s time for you to access your un-crazy side. What is it about the modern dating scene that transforms so many seemingly normal people into needy sad sacks or raving lunatics? Appearances to the contrary, there just can’t be that much undiagnosed bipolar disorder out there. Blame it on the media, aliens or even gluten if you want, but it is time for this to stop. Modern communication only facilitates this rampant nuttiness, and the worst culprits are those who engage in Facebook histrionics. These are usually the same morons 26

RSVP SEPT/OCT 2012

who began their relationships by lovingly posting back and forth on each other’s wall to the point of nausea. Sure you got dumped; sure you feel bad; that’s natural. How you think blathering about it on Facebook while simultaneously posting every video Adele ever recorded will improve the situation is where the logic fails. If you want to make yourself look like an idiot, mission accomplished. Otherwise, I am pretty sure that not once in the entire history of social media has this ever accomplished anything else.

The mad texting others engage in is equally absurd. What can these fools be thinking? There is nothing wrong with a simple follow up text, even right after a date. But anything much more than this, especially without reply, reeks of desperation. I have a friend who, after going on one date with a guy, has now received more than 30 messages without her replying to a single one (granted, I probably didn’t help matters by stealing her phone after about text number 20 and replying: “What are you wearing? I’m naked.”). You would

think the first dozen or so non-replies should have tipped him off. It doesn’t matter how great the date went (or more likely how great you thought it went). When someone doesn’t reply, this means they have had the time to reflect and take a pass. I am absolutely certain text number 11 will not be the one to change their mind. These text explosions to me are the equally pathetic equivalent of John Cusack holding up that boom box in that poor girl’s front yard, albeit, with less chance of getting oneself arrested. Life isn’t a cheesy 80s movie; if they don’t reply, it is time to move on. Speaking of which, while single, let’s just avoid grand, over-thetop romantic gestures altogether. Whether it’s telling someone they are your soul mate on the second date or showing up at 2 a.m. on your ex’s doorstep with flowers picked out of their neighbor’s yard, these gestures are rarely as grand as you think they are. Leave them to reality television and Mexican soap operas where they belong. Any behavior that is more likely to lead to a restraining order than romantic success should be avoided. Accordingly, I have concocted a few simple rules or, let’s call them guidelines, since I have been known to break a few of these myself:

ADDICTED TO GROUP FITNESS? GET A NON-STOP CLASSES PASS AT METRO FITNESS FOR THE FULL DOSE.

1. The Three Shot Rule (a.k.a. Dating’s Golden Rule). Under no circumstances will you contact someone who has not responded to you after three attempts; calls, texts, whatever (counter resets if they reply). Three strikes, you’re out, move on. A nonreply is an answer in itself. Engrave this one upon your heart people; a

much happier, less obsessed life is right around the corner.

2. Closure is overrated.

Relationships fizzle. People stop calling. Quite often you never know why. Deal with it and move on. If you are the kind of person who can’t be happy until you know why they broke up with you, I know why. Here’s a helpful exercise: Close your eyes. Picture their face. Imagine them saying “it’s not me, it’s you.”

3. Don’t drink and text, tweet, Facebook, etc. This one is self-explanatory. We have all done this, and we know why we shouldn’t. This is also why “you have been tagged in a photo” has become the most feared phrase in the English language. Yes...those of you who know me are wondering how I avoided the lightning strike that should have struck me after

writing those lines. Just because I am absolutely terrible at following this one doesn’t mean it isn’t true. Case in point, the day after the iPhone IOS 5 upgrade came out, I lazily sent out a late night “what’s up” text to two girls simultaneously, thus creating my first and all-time least favorite group text conversation. Lesson learned; thank you karma.

4. Be yourself, and don’t take yourself too seriously.

Being single and dating can be a lot of fun, but at times it can absolutely suck. This is why romantic comedies skip the part where the heroine dates the 40 losers before she finds her Mr. Right. You have to put yourself out there, and look at each failure as one more step closer to success. Live your life, do what you enjoy, socialize and have fun. If you want to meet someone with whom you enjoy shared interests, you are much

t

more likely to meet them if you actually pursue those interests instead of sitting around feeling sorry for yourself. If someone is looking for a sad, needy puppy, they will go to the pound and get one.

5. Don’t Settle.

Yeah, easier said than done. Just remember, if he looks like a certain feminine hygiene product, he acts like a certain feminine hygiene product and he sounds like a certain feminine hygiene product, he is probably a feminine hygiene product. Tell yourself otherwise, and you will be the one posting Adele songs on Facebook. So, take my advice, and access that un-crazy side. Keep calm, have fun and be patient. I WILL NOT BE IGNORED!

emales need not suit up in pads, helmets and jerseys to huddle up and win. Socializing is our sport, and football season provides us the perfect opportunity to get in the zone with our favorite team of girls for a spirit-filled painting party. The sport of football is both a physical and mental endeavor. Athletes must train their minds and bodies to win. Much less intense, grid-iron artistry requires a mind ready for fun and the much simpler move of picking up a paint brush.

A Good Coach

RSVP Montgomery gathered a few friends for pre-season excitement and learned that even amateur artists can paint with the right coach. The choices were to paint either a tiger or an elephant, and oddly enough, our group was a 50/50 split of Alabama and Auburn fans – truly a house divided. Upon seeing the sample canvas, I somewhat regretted being an Alabama fan. Not just because I’m a Troy graduate and a Trojan at heart, but because I can hardly draw a stick figure, and the serious elephant intimidated me. Enter Rachel Kurtz. Rachel is an Auburn graduate where she began as a prevet major until football season appropriately got in the way. She then chose to follow her childhood passion and pursue a degree in art. This especially qualifies her to paint with orange and blue, and as our coach for the day, skill was less crucial as we painted our elephants and tigers with careful instruction. Throughout our painting session, we took turns as Team Auburn or Team Alabama were called to task. “Just like football is made one play at a time, creating art happens one stroke at a time,” said Rachel.

The Home Field Advantage

The best part about our painting party was that all we had to do was show up. No runs to Hobby Lobby or Michael’s for supplies. No team strategy or elaborate plans. Rachel brings the party to you. From paints to brushes, canvas to easel, palette to apron, we only had to coordinate ourselves. This easy setup is the perfect solution for a group of busy girls looking for a reason to hang out together and catch up on the latest while creating art and memories together. To that we say S-C-O-R-E!

Show Your Spirit

Hanging out waiting for the base coat to set, contrary to the popular analogy, we learned that in the company of friends, watching paint dry is, in fact, fun. For a group whose volume can rival that of a collegiate pep rally, most interesting was the hush that fell among us as our creativity flowed. Our limited chatter concentrated on the efforts toward our canvases with step-by-step instruction. Unlike a group of smack talking men watching football, we cared less about rivalry and cheered each other on as we learned how to paint the seemingly difficult elephant’s trunk or eye of the tiger. Gaining confidence from

the tips we learned, we discovered our hidden abilities, and while some of our group’s artistry is preferred hidden, overall we admired each other’s techniques and equally surprised ourselves. Unlike our usual gatherings over food, the only dip at this event was when our brushes hit the water between paint. Giggling, oohing and aahing over one another, we bonded through this experience, proving that off-field camaraderie is always in season- no tailgating required. Rachel described, “Just like each player has a focus, each painter creates their own version and gives something extra from their soul. You can have 50 people paint the same thing, but because the movement of your arm is connected to how your brain works and thinks, they will all look unique.” At the end of our party, we each walked away with a canvas displaying our own small victory. For women who typically bond through words, this experience gave us a unique way to connect and a conversation piece to enjoy for many football seasons to come. For this artwork, the finished canvas is only part of the picture of a great afternoon shared with friends.

To book your own adult or kid’s painting party of any theme where the host paints free, or to view Rachel’s art, visit www.southernstrokesart.com.

Carmen Finlayson and Bryan Tucker A Destination Wedding

D

estination weddings have become a hot trend for many couples, and that is exactly what Carmen Finlayson and Bryan Tucker opted for when planning their special day. Jamaica was the location of choice—a place where the happy couple always dreamed of going. The breathtaking scenery and relaxed island feel created a ceremony themed in simple perfection. However, before jetting to the Caribbean, the couple sought out the event team at RSVP Montgomery to create an engagement celebration for family and friends at the pavilions at Hampstead. Like most discerning brides, Carmen described exactly what she pictured for her special event. Candles illuminating the bride’s choice of bright pink and orange floral designs were atop the guest tables, with the same bright hues draping the VIP tent reserved especially for Bryan’s two children, Anna and Jake. The outdoor venue was surrounded by lights as the large tree adorned with rustic lanterns provided an elegant ambiance for the evening. Pink gel lights filled the pavilions where guests

mingled, enjoying drinks and fabulous food from A Catered Affair. When The Rexton Lee Band took the stage, there was no stopping the couple’s close friends as the groom took the stage and entertained throughout the night. Flip flops, also known as “dancin’ shoes,” were available for the ladies wanting to kick off their heels and dance the night away. Guests took home custom koozies and cups as party favors to remember this joyous occasion. A few weeks later, Carmen and Bryan arrived at Couples Swept Away, an all-inclusive resort in Negril, Jamaica for their wedding and honeymoon. On July 23 at 10 a.m., the couple exchanged vows, and Bryan kissed his new bride to make it official. The rest of their carefree island time was filled with newlywed adventure, enjoying the scenic honeycombed cliffs and a room view overlooking the stunningly beautiful ribbon of white sand and crystal clear water. Congratulations Carmen and Bryan!

If you haven't gotten a chance to see the ballrooms at the Capital City Club yet, the girls at RSVP urge you to stop by to check them out. In order to show off their newly-renovated ballrooms, the Capital City Club threw a party in conjunction with their ribbon-cutting ceremony. Guests mingled, sipped on cocktails and enjoyed some of the delicious hors d’oeuvres prepared by Chef Michael Schwartz all while enjoying the best view of our capital city. RSVP Montgomery sat down with Capital City Club employees, Patrick Skelton, general manager, Ashley Brandle, member relations and private events director, Donnie Day, service director, and Chef Michael Schwartz to find out more about Montgomery’s best-kept secret. 36

RSVP SEPT/OCT 2012

RSVP: What is the single most important thing that’s unique about your venue? Patrick Skelton: Most people would say, "That's a no-brainer, it's the view." It is true that we have the best view in Montgomery and a brand new ballroom, but it’s our staff that sets us apart from the rest. Whether it's a wedding, birthday, family reunion or a business meeting, our team works together on every single event to ensure that magic moments and unforgettable memories are made. We truly love what we do, and I want Montgomery residents to know that our amazing facilities and staff are available to them for all their private function needs.

RSVP: Do you have to be a member to host your special event at the club? Patrick Skelton: It is a common belief in Montgomery that you have to be a member of the club to host an event here. Not true. I encourage everyone to contact Ashley Brandle, our private events director, to inquire about how to take full advantage of our beautiful facilities.

RSVP: What sets your venue apart from others? Donnie Day: I agree with Patrick. Without any doubt, it is our staff that sets our venue apart from others. My service team is dedicated to providing the best service Montgomery has to offer. I promise the best for our private parties, and we deliver every time.

RSVP: Are there multiple catering options? Can the chef customize a menu for the bride? Chef Michael Schwartz: My culinary team and I can customize a menu to fit any style of function. We are not a restaurant that is tied to one style or concept, and we create new menus that involve every kind of cuisine imaginable every day. It is our passion and our art. I cherish the opportunities that are presented to us on a regular basis, and it is our goal to make someone's special day an unforgettable one.

RSVP: What can a bride look forward to when booking her reception with you? Ashley Brandle: We can serve as a one-stop shop for everything bridal. From catering and linens to flowers and cakes, we can point a bride in the right direction or take care of everything in-house! Our newly renovated Skyline Ballroom and beautifully decorated Montgomery Room are the perfect location for a wedding reception, rehearsal dinner or engagement party! With nine private event spaces for two to 500 guests, there is no event we cannot accommodate. SEPT/OCT 2012 RSVP 37

APRIL RUDDER April Rudder worked as a server at a deli while in high school. One day, she ended up in the kitchen for a shift and decided she loved it. That is where she developed her passion for cooking. Since then, she has been a chef in fine dining establishments, commercial operations, catering and now in education. April is now an instructor at Trenholm State in Culinary Arts, where she was once a student herself. She says the thing she loves the most about what she does is when a student “gets it.” April describes this as the moment when a student is filled with confidence and accomplishment after succeeding with an unfamiliar culinary task. She says that witnessing such moments can be very rewarding. When asked who has contributed most to her success, April quickly credits her former instructors, MaryAnn Campbell and Robert Cawley. She refers to the two of them as her “mentors, friends and colleagues.” April also says that her family’s support of her endeavors has been a large part of her success. In addition to teaching at Trenholm, April does monthly healthy meal demos for senior citizens, and she teaches a kids cooking camp to encourage children to make healthy food selections. In her spare time, she enjoys working in her herb garden, spending time outdoors with her family and, of course, cooking. She has a husband, Josh, a daughter, Rory Kate, and a son, Wylde Zack. She also enjoys what’s been happening in Montgomery, especially all the new restaurants and the growing interest in local sustainability.

CHRISTOPHER SMITH After graduating from Birmingham-Southern College in 1995, Christopher Smith went on to law school at the University of Alabama. He graduated with his Juris Doctorate in 1998 and began practicing labor and employment law at a national law firm in Birmingham. In 2006, he left the firm to become part of the legal department at Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama, LLC. Just three years later, Chris was promoted to assistant general counsel and head of the legal department. He is one of the youngest employees to ever take a senior-level position within the company. Of course, Chris will tell you that his success didn’t come without help. His family has had a huge influence on his career. His father exemplified hard work and ethics, his mother taught him to believe in himself and his wife has always supported him unselfishly. And if that’s not enough, “my two young daughters provide me with tremendous joy, pride and happiness,” brags Chris. Between time with the family and his work, Chris stays involved with the community. He has participated in Leadership Montgomery, the Alabama State Bar Leadership Forum and also served as the editor of The Alabama Lawyer. Chris was born in Nuremberg, Germany and has traveled extensively. He loves going out West to hike and backpack, but most of all, he and his wife Lauren enjoy the Montgomery area and the changes and excitement that are currently underway with the city.

REBECCA BLOODWORTH Rebecca Bloodworth received her Bachelor of Science degree in Education from Auburn University Montgomery. She is currently employed as the program manager for AUM’s Division of Continuing Education. Rebecca spent 10 years as a classroom educator before moving to her position as program manager. She has been in this position for five years now. “I really enjoy creating programs based on current students’ needs and watching them grow in their personal development,” explains Rebecca. Since she manages both the youth and personal development (adults) programs, creativity is a must. Spanish for Travel, Smart Shopping and Deck the Halls are just a few of the courses she developed that will start this fall. Rebecca loves the fact that her program is about teaching. The students and the teachers don’t have to worry about grades or tests, and that leads to learning and creativity. Contrary to what you might think, the summer doesn’t offer a break for Rebecca. She is the principal at AUM during the summer. AUM offers youth college classes, camps and a six-week reading and math program during that time. However, when she does have downtime, she spends it with her family. Rebecca has a husband, Allan, and two children, Sam and Mary Claire. The family has four pets: the pups, Ruckus and Sara, a cat named Snowflake and Willie, the one-eyed turtle.

After starting AUM with a full scholarship for engineering, Stefania quickly realized that field was not for her. She switched to political science and later got her start in the public sector in Fairhope, Ala. as the legislative liaison for Baldwin County. She spent four years in that position and then came back to Montgomery, where she landed an administrative position with AUM’s fundraising office. In August of 2011, she was appointed to special assistant to Alabama’s Secretary of Commerce (Greg Canfield) by the governor. It is easy to tell that Stefania loves her job and cares about Alabama. She explains it best: “At a time when we see businesses and workers struggling with the economy, it is so rewarding to be a part of something that creates jobs...lots and lots of jobs...for hard-working Alabamians.” Stefania enjoys living in Montgomery too. From hanging out downtown at the SandBar or strolling around in Cloverdale to a girl’s night out at La Jolla or Tipping Point, she feels it is a fun place to be. Of course, her favorite thing about Montgomery is her family here. She credits her parents with the success she has had in life. They gave her the self confidence to be fearless when faced with new challenges.Three years ago, Stefania helped save the Autism Crawfish Boil from ending, and she stays active in many other fundraisers. She also works out every morning at 4:30 a.m. and goes back for more after work.

hoe stores. The Lifetime Channel. Romantic comedies. Baby showers. There are just some things in life that resonate more with women than men. Browse the relationship section at Booksa-Million, and it’s filled with books to help couples understand each other because the differences between men and women are, as one book title says, like "Venus and Mars"... completely different planets at times. Because of this, All Med is introducing a new format to their services. They are excited to announce that they have signed the lease on their sixth location, the All Med Women’s Center. Branded as All Med for Women, the new location will provide all the same services as their other five locations, plus the added services of mammography and cervical cancer screening. The setting will be more like that of a high-end spa; an environment that caters to the special needs and comforts women want. All Med for Women will seek to build a supporting relationship to the area's OB/ GYN physicians, not replacing what they do, but complementing their important 54

RSVP SEPT/OCT 2012

FOR WOMEN role as they focus on the preventative and primary care needs of women. All Med for Women will open on Oct. 1. The location is on Sydney Curve, off Taylor Road, right across from the AUM water tower. Leia Thornton, PA-C and Judy Yaple, CRNP, will be the providers for All Med for Women. Dr. Don Brobst is the collaborating physician.

Quick Q & A: RSVP: Leia, can you give us a brief explanation of how All Med for Women is different than All Med Physicians at Pri Med? Leia, PA-C: Certainly. All Med for Women is just that – FOR WOMEN. We will still offer all of the conveniences our patients are accustomed to when they have urgent care needs such as minor traumas, cold symptoms or urinary tract infections. The difference will be that we will provide these services in a serene, spa-like atmosphere that is centered around our female patients. In addition, we will also provide a place

where women can receive preventative care services such as cervical cancer screening, breast cancer screening and immunizations in a timely manner within a comfortable environment. We will also gladly take on the role of primary care if we have patients that currently do not have a primary care provider. RSVP: Wow. That sounds excellent. So, does that mean patients will no longer need to follow up with their current OB/ GYN or primary care provider? Judy, CRNP: No – exactly the opposite. We are simply providing a service that allows women to have convenient, comfortable access to care for urgent needs, preventative screening and primary care for those needing a provider. If a patient’s preventative care screening is ever abnormal, then they will be referred to an OB/GYN or other appropriate specialist. Our purpose is to provide healthcare to women that is timely, convenient and in complement to the local primary care and OB/GYN specialist. RSVP: Leia, I know that you and Judy will be the providers for All Med for

Women. Can you explain to me how physician assistants and nurse practitioners are different than doctors? Leia, PA-C: Physician assistants and nurse practitioners are commonly referred to as mid-level providers. Our education and experience is above the level of an RN, but not as extensive as that of a doctor. As mid-level providers, we are able to treat patients, write prescriptions and perform minor emergency procedures. RSVP: So, you are not a doctor, but you are still a provider? Judy, CRNP: Right. However, we work very closely with the doctors. In fact, we have a weekly chart review with our supervising physician. RSVP: So, in other words, there are a lot of simple, routine things that you can take care of, and you save the more complex things for our OB/GYN doctors. Judy, CRNP: What we are talking about here are typical things you would go to Pri Med for like flu, stomach bugs, aches, pains, sprains, but we are also talking about the things that are unique to women. RSVP:Where is All Med for Women located? Leia, PA-C:7065 Sydney Curve, across from the AUM water tower. For directions, call our central number at (334) 323-4000. RSVP:What are your hours? Leia, PA-C:Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday 8 a.m. – 8 p.m., Thursday and Friday 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. RSVP:Well, the girls at RSVP are so excited about what this will offer for the women in our community—a place where our health care needs are the focus.

Have a

Heart 4 Children! By Lindsey Rodgers

Earnestine Woods, a Montgomery Public Schools security officer, is known around the River Region for having a big heart. So big, in fact, that she started her very own charity organization 13 years ago when a young girl with special needs touched her heart. The organization, Have a Heart 4 Children, has been thriving since then in their mission “to provide social and educational programs to enhance the welfare of special needs children by providing resources and activities including after school programs, holiday programs, educational programs and field trips, workshops, summer programs, athletic programs, mentoring programs and youth development programs.” Woods told RSVP it all started during Hayneville Middle School’s field trip to the Montgomery Mall. Woods was working as a mall security officer at the time, and it was here that she met Tamika, a special needs child full of love. Tamika touched her heart, and Woods began to bring her and her six 56

RSVP SEPT/OCT 2012

classmates special gifts and supplies. Before long, other classrooms and teachers began writing letters to Woods telling her about their classrooms, the children and the types of disabilities they had. Woods said just seeing Tamika’s disposition and realizing how many other special needs children needed support and love encouraged her to start an organization that would provide positive outlets and resources as well as respite for parents and caregivers of special needs children. She recruited local business owners Alberta Jackson and Michael Williams to assist her in doing more for the special needs children in Montgomery

because she felt that the need was so big she couldn’t continue to do it by herself. Woods, a single mother and winner of the Montgomery-Tuskegee Times Humanitarian Award, said the love and support of her family has enabled her to accomplish more than she ever imagined. Each year, Woods, Jackson and Williams, along with many volunteers and sponsors, host the Have a Heart for Special Needs Children Christmas Event. At this event, the children enjoy a specially-prepared dinner and are given toys and clothing. Woods said the Have a Heart for Special Needs Children Christmas Event would not be possible each year without the generous donations and support from the community.

In addition to the annual Christmas event, Have a Heart 4 Children hosts and attends many other events throughout the year, including toy drives, the Turkey Day Classic Parade, the Back-to-School Supply Giveaway, the Jamaican Villages School Supply Drop and much more. With the Jamaican Villages School Supply Drop, Woods and her Board of Directors have expanded their outreach to children in need. Woods first encountered the children of Montego Bay during a birthday trip with family and friends to Jamaica where she had the chance to interact with several of the children and visit their schools. What she saw encouraged her to try to provide educational supplies to enhance their learning. Last year, they provided school supplies to more than 500 students, and next year, they hope to provide even more, with a special promise to provide 60 kindergarten sleeping mats for the children’s naps. Recently, thanks to an anonymous donor, Woods was given a building to house events, activities, educational field trips and more for the children of the River Region area. Woods hopes to be able to have a sensory room, arts and crafts room, science room and other various educational rooms for field trips. “My goals have broadened since I acquired this building—I have everlasting goals now,” Woods said. “This local business man has given me a great gift; the seed has been planted, and it has to grow now. We need to nurture it and figure out how to make it grow, make it strong and make it successful so that I can offer not only

special needs children, but all children in the Montgomery area a safe place equipped with special programs that they aren’t given the opportunity to have.” Another way Have a Heart 4 Children provides support to the River Region’s special needs children is through respite services. The respite program provides relief services to the parents and caregivers of special needs children. Through this program, the parent or caregiver can call the Have a Heart 4 Children office and ask for a respite service, in which Woods and her two daughters, Satidra and ZaCoya, will come to the home of the special needs child and allow for the parent/ caregiver to go to doctor or dentist appointments, attend church, go on date nights, attend meetings, take a short-term vacation or even go shopping. Woods is currently working on building a larger team of volunteers to provide respite services to the River Region area. Woods says her mission to help these children is fulfilling because Have a Heart 4 Children makes such a big impact on their lives. “By providing services and events for local special needs children, we level the playing field to make them feel appreciated and valued. Our goal is to be able to impact even just one child’s life and to provide access to activities that ablebodied children would participate in. We are committed to continue acting as a ‘vessel’ to cultivate resources, assist existing centers and programs and advocate for these children.”

Have a Heart 4 Children is always looking for volunteers, as the organization is run entirely on a volunteer basis. Volunteers should have passion and a desire to work with children. Donations to the organization are also greatly appreciated. If you are interested in donating to the organization or volunteering, contact Earnestine Woods at (334)561-6363 or haveaheart4children@hotmail.com.

a look at Montgomery’s Best Burgers by Mark Leslie Photography by Josh Moates

There is nothing more American than the hamburger— well, besides baseball and apple pie, of course. And yet, finding a good burger in America is not as easy as one might think. This is the land of the frozen beef patty and, that, a good burger does not make. Being from Chicago, the stockyard of the Midwest, I get territorial about ground beef. I feel as if we gave birth to the hamburger. It is ours. A burger from anywhere outside the Heartland just doesn’t cut the mustard, if you’ll pardon the pun.

Sure, that is the highfalutin, snobby “Yankee” in me, thinking we somehow own exclusive, secret rights to hamburger perfection. (No wonder so many of us snake oil selling carpetbaggers were run out of town—the gumption!) Fortunately, Montgomery has three restaurants that are doing right by my Midwestern-burger standards and, surprisingly, they aren’t going the “all beef” patty route, either. So give your grill a rest from its summer workout, drive past the golden arches (please!) and check out these great burgers—and that’s no bull!

Hamburger King

A legend in Montgomery for having the best burgers in town, Hamburger King did not disappoint. Having lived in Montgomery for 25 years now, I will shamefully admit that this was my first visit.

I ordered the “Deluxe Hamburger” and rounded out my order with chips (there are no fries) and a root beer (drinks are bottled or canned—no fountain drinks. Hooray!). As I waited, the woman, I think the owner perhaps, ran the griddle with precision— rotating cooked burgers off and onto Hamburger King is a dive, and I say that griddle-warmed buns, scraping the surface with great affection. A dive thrives because clean before tossing down hand-rolled balls its food is great and strikes a chord with of ground beef onto the hot griddle to press people. Here the menu is limited and that into burgers with her spatula. goes for the hours of operation, too. Only open for breakfast and lunch, you are best Hamburger King still does it right by using advised to call in your order in advance if fresh ground beef, shaped on the griddle, you are not eating there—they are busy, lightly seasoned with your choice of busy, busy! toppings. I’ve already added their number into my speed-dial—after 25 years, I have some catching up to do! 58

The Railyard Brewing Company 12 West Jefferson Street • 334.462.6456

From the moment I walked into Chef Leo Maurelli’s test kitchen, I knew I was in good hands—his “aggressive Southern hospitality” vibe was right on, and the beer was cold. When you are talking burgers, you are almost always talking beer, so the Railyard Brewing Company, Montgomery’s newest culinary addition to the downtown food scene, is ready to satisfy you with a new twist on both the burgers and the brews. Slated to open in early September, Chef Leo treated me to a preview tasting of what he is excited to start serving to you. First of several appetizers was his version of the “Scotch Egg”—traditional British pub food. Chef Leo wraps a hardboiled egg with ground Conecuh sausage before it is coated in breadcrumbs and fried. Served on a swipe of homemade whole grain mustard aioli with an arugula side salad dressed in white balsamic, truffle oil and local honey reduction, this peppery and slightly acidic salad is the perfect foil for the Scotch egg’s richness and the mustard’s bite. Born in Panama and a graduate of Auburn’s Hotel and Restaurant Management program, Chef Leo places his

60

RSVP SEPT/OCT 2012

homegrown “Southern-centric” spin on the next two appetizers—“Pimento Cheese” with roasted jalapeños, homemade ancho chili mayo and a blend of Gouda, white and sharp cheddar cheeses and his “Truffle and Manchego Cheese Fries,” which starts with fresh, home-cut fries, drizzled in the same white balsamic reduction as the before-mentioned arugula salad, topped with Manchego cheese and then garnished with chopped cilantro. His even “Deeper South” heritage rings out in these appetizers. For me, a burger is all about the meat, and the Railyard’s “Signature Burger” comes straight at you with a special blend of beef brisket, short rib and chuck. Yes, the secret is in the blend! Served on a pretzel bun with a homemade Gorgonzola aioli and sautéed mushrooms, this knockout burger needs no other condiments, though you may want some of the homemade green tomato ketchup to go with the handmade pale ale battered onion rings. “All Hail the Pig” was the next burger up. Working with the “Signature” beef blend, Chef Leo mixes in ground pork as the foundation to his swine-tastic celebration of all things pig. Served on a brioche bun, the burger is topped with pepper jack cheese, bacon, arugula and homemade smoked ancho chili and bacon aioli—a glorious blend of pig, smoke and a little background heat in every bite! The Railyard will also offer turkey, lamb, bison, chicken and veggie burgers, along with a daily fresh fish “burger” selection. Onsite brews include a pale ale, IPA, pilsner, honey quarter, stout and a seasonal brew, too.

Central

129 Coosa Street • 334.517.1155

Central, located in downtown Montgomery’s thriving “Alley” scene, brings a big city feel of style and sophistication to the capital city. With an interior that is handsome, relaxed and creatively lit, I had to remind myself that I wasn’t in Charleston, Savannah, Nashville or Atlanta. Featuring as much seafood on their menu as meat, I had to start with the smoked tuna dip, served with crunchy pretzel sticks. And I couldn’t resist getting the “Pork Belly & Peaches” for a starter as well. Served on a bed of watercress with some Manchego cheese and toasted walnuts, the richness of the pork belly is complemented by the sweetness of the peach. [If you aren’t familiar with pork belly, I hope you won’t be

put off by its name. Bacon is cut from pork belly, and “pork belly” itself is just a different cut from bacon. It is a particularly favorite cut of meat in Chinese and Korean cuisines. Next time you’re at Central, I recommend it!] Central’s “Pub Burger” puts some fun toppings on top of their ground sirloin. Bacon onion jam and the pickled green tomato—a whole slice; this is not a relish—add the sweet and slightly sour, smoky taste that works so well on a hamburger. A little spicy mustard balances out this burger without covering up any of the great beef flavor. After all, the beef is what makes the burger, and Central stays true to its name—keeping the focus centered on the star between the bun.

According to my doctor, I’m in excellent health. The instruction and encouragement that I received at Pro Fitness 3D has helped me maintain the discipline and dedication to achieve these results. -Lynn Williams

Terry and Jennifer are always available and go above and beyond to help me reach my goals. The gym has such a friendly environment, and I am so glad that I chose Pro Fitness 3D as my gym. -Gina Barnes

Terry & Jennifer Biddy

With the help I have received from Terry and Jennifer, I have reversed my type 1 diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and depression. Without the guidance I received at Pro Fitness 3D, I couldn’t have achieved my goals and total body transformation. -Eric Starks

Terry and Jennifer are without a doubt the best personal trainers I have ever had the pleasure of being trained by. Their understanding and knowledge of training and nutrition has helped me to transform my physique to a level I didn't think I could achieve. -Randy Conklin
