Whether it is the Harriott II, Biscuits Baseball, Jubilee CityFest, The Alley or the amphitheater concerts, there are plenty of enticements beckoning you to venture downtown. Be sure to check out our riverfront revitalization feature on page 24! The event planning side of our business has taken us on some wild adventures. Special thanks to Aronov New Homes for giving us the opportunity to organize the “wrap up” party for the Extreme Home Makeover team. It was a blast. We have also formed a partnership with the Riverfront Facilities to produce many new and exciting events downtown, including the first ever Pub Crawl on May 29. We hope to see you there! A Male’s Perspective on Dating By: Blue Sullivan I’ve been back to the River Region over a year now, long enough to refamiliarize myself with the peculiar dating habits of its residents. In this time, it has occurred to me that, as a committed bachelor and keen observer of the human condition, I am perhaps in a unique position to provide some advice to the fairer sex on how to avoid many of the pitfalls & common mistakes which plague their search for a proper mate. The first (and perhaps most fatal) of these mistakes is most ladies’ conception of a “perfect” mate. This idea of a man without flaws is frankly only the purview of fairy tales, which even in their narrow and fantasized conception only show the beginning

of a life we are told was “happy ever after.” Do you honestly think Prince Charming is quite so gallant & romantic after five years of sharing a bathroom with Cinderella? Moreover, do you really think Cinderella is still captivated by her mate’s air of mystery and sexual magic after she has been laundering his underwear for half a decade? The point is not to search fruitlessly for someone who meets every idealized standard (i.e. an exact look, height, income, type of career, etc.). Frankly, no matter how wonderful you no doubt are (and I’m sure you’re just a hair fiber away from being flawless), you are unlikely to be “perfect” to your prospective mate, either. The point

is to find someone perfectly suited to be with you, which means someone who truly understands and embraces those parts of you which others might perceive as “imperfect” (like say, your penchant for growling at anyone who speaks to you before you have your morning coffee). Besides, how Charming is your Prince if he is constantly berating you about your appearance, style of dress, and friends? There is a common mistake I recognize in my girlfriends’ woebegone tales of relationships gone bad, and it comes down to this: women rarely observe the whole picture when initially evaluating a prospective mate. The pheromone rush of attraction and that noble desire to find true love invariably leads to an initial “glamour shot” of the new man. All faults are touched up, glossed over, and seen through a maze of gauze until they seem not to have ever been there at all. At the same time, the superficially “ideal” traits are accented to the point that merely the faint glimmer of their existence is held up as proof of the new man’s worth.

Here’s the unvarnished truth, ladies. Just because a man pulls out your chair for you at dinner doesn’t necessarily mean he’s considerate. Just because he smiles during your tales of work-related intrigue doesn’t necessarily mean he’s a good listener. And just because he goes to a couple of chick flicks with you, it doesn’t necessarily mean he’s sensitive to a woman’s (and more importantly, your) feelings. Equally important, those nagging doubts you have about him, say his mysterious penchant to check his cell phone whenever he thinks you’re not paying attention, aren’t necessarily just paranoia. If he seems like a guy who has girls on the side, chances are good you’ll be finding out all their names just when it hurts the most. I don’t say any of this to discourage you in your quest. I tell you this so you can avoid the same mistakes which lead women to get so disillusioned, and then miss out on that wonderful someone who lacks the flash, but has all the substance from which great relationships are forged. Happy hunting--just remember that the clearer your vision is, the better chance you have of hitting the desired target.

Riverfront Pub Crawl

My own pub crawl experience started at the Exchange, located in the breathtaking Renaissance Hotel and Spa. Here I was extended the honor of ringing the bell signifying the beginning of happy hour. While winding down with dollar draft beer and two dollar margaritas, we

Our next stops in the night’s adventure were an intriguing sampling of the cool urban vibes found at Nobles and the Olive Room. While Nobles provided a little piece of the big easy for its happy young clientele, the Olive Room provided a big city lounge atmosphere, an inviting array of special martinis, and after work drink specials from 4-7pm. Off the Wagon was our last stop of the evening. This is the city’s nonpareil music bar and venue. With drinks flowing, and both the temperature and mojo rising, the evening was reaching a fever pitch. As usual, the act on stage rocked the house, but our experience at Off the Wagon revealed that it is much more than just a rock bar. Proprietor Chris Rambo brings in the best in regional and local entertainment as well. If you haven’t been, enjoy this one of a kind Montgomery experience for the first time. This was the perfect place to end the night. Soon you will have the opportunity to purchase tickets to a party, with your own gang and a bevy of new friends, in some of the best spots in town. One of the best parts is no driving around town! Montgomery’s newest Alley Bar, Off the Wagon, The Exchange, The Olive Room, the Club Car Bar, and many more have signed on for a night of mind-boggling excitement and entertainment in the capital city. All of the stops will be pulled: wristbands for reduced drink prices, the absolute best in entertainment, and a chance to party like rock stars will be on the list.

Finally, you can revisit those college days once again and paint the town three shades of red. Matt Clark, a fellow crawler, said, “The pub crawl is a great idea.” Tyler Schmidt, another fellow pub crawler, stated. “It was good night with a bit of variety for everyone and easy on the pocket book.” Chris Ellis, co-partner of The Brew Pub, said, “That’s what is going to be awesome. You will have something to do within walking distance.” So get ready Montgomery. Amass that group of friends. Call in some old friends from college, for this is going to be a night to remember.

I recently had the distinct pleasure of spending an afternoon at the spa, and as the working mother of a 3 month old, this invitation couldn’t have been more welcome! I was given the Renaissance Montgomery Signature Massage, The Renaissance Signature Facial and the Refreshing Pedicure. The massage and facial rooms are incredibly perfect with dim lighting and relaxing spa music playing in the background. The use of essential oils and aromatherapy during both treatments allows you to truly decompress. With each stroke, the massage therapists use their knowledge of skin and muscles to help improve circulation and stimulate blood flow throughout your body. Their attention to detail is impeccable, using methods such as a large feather to fan aromatic smells throughout your treatment room. In between spa services, the quiet room adds to the serenity with plush lounge chairs, magazines, a whirlpool, lemon water and snacks. After experiencing my massage and facial, I was escorted to the hair and nail salon, and was pleasantly surprised to find a modern space complete with stylists and products galore. DOWNTOWN VINTAGE SPACE. TIMELESS FUN. By: John Heckman

Montgomery always seems to move to the beat of its own drum. So I suppose it shouldn’t come as such a surprise that while the rest of the world appears to be in the throes of an economic crisis and freezing development, our cap city is adding some much anticipated additions downtown. Yep ya’ll, we might not be completely immune to this financial meltdown mess, but coming soon we’ll have some new places to brush it off our shoulders before shuffling off to the important stuff, like a Biscuits game. Some estimate plans for Montgomery’s newest downtown entertainment district, “The Alley,” began about a decade ago. Of course, early on skeptics were as dubious that the area would actually reach fruition as they were about those early Nick Saban comingto-Alabama rumors. “We heard about it back then,” says Jake Kyser, one of the property owners in The Alley, “but we weren’t sure if it was actually going to happen. Even after all the talk, we weren’t sure the city was going to be able to come up with the money.” It took a tremendous amount of cooperation between the city and The Alley supporters (the city pitched in over a million dollars for the project)

and low and behold, like Saban landing in Tuscaloosa, the destination in downtown Montgomery became a reality. Located about a half-block from Riverwalk Stadium off Tallapoosa Street and within easy walking distance of the Renaissance Hotel and the riverfront development, The Alley is designed to be yet another fundamental asset to Montgomery’s revitalization plan. The entrance to The Alley is boldly punctuated by an historic water tower which was relocated from atop one of the adjoining buildings. Slated for demolition, the structure was rescued and will now serve as the landmark for the development while preserving a piece of Montgomery’s architectural heritage. It’s an alley (duh), but the center is courtyard-esque, lined by late nineteenth century brick buildings and juxtaposed with new landscaping and a paved stone walkway installed by Concreations. It will be much more enjoyable for your feet than a genuine paved road would have been; ladies in high heels... you’re welcome. It is a pleasant environment, but also the kind of place the Number Sixteen crowd and 1048 regulars might both feel at home in. Alley Bar, Dreamland BarBQue, and Sa Za Serious Italian Food, are just a few of the bar/restaurant spots in or near the Alley that which will be open this summer. One local, whose office actually overlooks The Alley, expressed her excitement, “It’s going to be a cool scene... that window is our conference room,” she explained pointing up to second floor from the Alley. “I think our work ethic is going to suffer,” she joked.

Giving yet another reason to dine downtown is the recently opened legendary favorite, Dreamland BarBQue. Owner Bob Parker feels fortunate to have secured a place for his restaurant in The Alley, benefiting from the constant traffic brought by Biscuits baseball games and all those employed downtown looking for a new lunch spot. Whether you are lured in by the smell, live music, outdoor seating, or just a craving for succulent ribs worth getting your hands dirty, you are sure to enjoy this southern staple in the heart of the Riverfront.

Mike Watson, local well-respected architect and experienced bar owner (Bar51 in Auburn), is the perfect guy to conceptualize what will be the hub of The Alley, fittingly called Alley Bar. “It will be a unique space, sort of warehouse industrial chic,” says Watson. He cleared out the street-level parking area of his office building adjoining The Alley to create space for this entertainment venue and has been working tirelessly to have it ready in May. “I have to,” explains Mike, “my daughter’s wedding reception is here in June, and she’ll disown me if it’s not done by then.” This has been a vision of Watson’s for a while, he notes, adding: “I’m excited about the mix of

SaZa Serious Italian Food expects to open in July, and will serve “authentic southern Italian peasant food,” according to part owner Ken Register. This will be the second Sa Za. According to Register, the idea for the restaurant came from Joe DiMaggio Jr. (the cousin of the baseball great) and has been a big hit at the original restaurant in Naples, Florida. “Nothing will be more than twenty bucks, says Register, “unless you want Lobster on your pizza.” And yes, lobster pizza is one of the tempting choices available when the restaurant opens. Jake Kyser worked on the renovations to “129 Coosa,” a second floor venue with prime location in the Alley. 129 Coosa boasts exposed brick, 12 foot ceilings and a spacious covered rear balcony overlooking The Alley. If the ambience isn’t enough to convince you to have your wedding, reception, or corporate party here, even more appealing is the ability to choose your own caterer and host your own bar, which is helpful in accommodating any budget. rentals for those who want to soak in some sun and fun on the mighty Alabama River. Beginning in May, rentals are available every weekend and by reservation only during the week. Equally enthused about The Alley are the existing downtown businesses. The Renaissance and the Montgomery Biscuits, for example, see this as a mutually beneficial relationship. “We are excited about creating another destination to bring people downtown,” says Montgomery Biscuits assistant general manager, Marla Terranova. “The whole point of the ball park was to revitalize downtown and we are proud to be a cornerstone of all that is happening.” The Renaissance, located within a football toss of The Alley, figures to bring out of town guests for conferences and events, and The Alley provides convenient downtown entertainment. The Alley project also brought forth the return of the riverboat. It is a massive red, white, and blue triple-decker boat that holds around 300 people. “It was built in 1981, although we refurbished it when it arrived, and we take great pride in its meticulous maintenance,” says Branch Kloess, the director of Riverfront Facilities. Kloess says they’ve already had lots of interest in it for wedding receptions and private parties and he laid out an impressive plan offering cruises three days a week – a mere $15 for the ride and around $35 with dinner included. This plan includes Wednesday night Commerce Dinner Cruises where you can enjoy a unique way to mix business with pleasure. Over a century ago, another riverboat, the Harriott, called Montgomery home. Now the “Harriott II” inherits the name and perhaps some of the classic riverboat “mojo” you might imagine of those popular in the 1800s – minus the overdressed ladies in big feathery hats.

Harriott II and other new additions downtown hope to be especially hopping during Jubilee CityFest on May 22nd and 23rd. The organizers of Jubilee are similarly optimistic about the upside of anything that brings people downtown. “We think the synergy from all of the new hotels, restaurants, meeting space, bars and attractions will enhance Montgomery’s appeal to locals and visitors alike and add more excitement to Jubilee CityFest,” expounds Marianne McLed. L.L. Cool J, Hinder, 3 Doors Down and Montgomery Gentry are just a few in the lineup this year. Other spring and summer downtown events contribute to the excitement as well, including a Summer Concert Series at the Riverfront Amphitheater and a handful of concerts at the train depot. All involved in the downtown revitalization and events appear to be targeting just about everybody - socialites, sports fans, families, and even people who prefer lobster on their pizza. Just look around downtown these days and you’ll see a wealth of opportunities for having fun and enjoying life in the River Region.

Helping a deserving family in need calls for a deserving “thank you” to the contributors who made it happen. After a tremendous effort to build a home in a week, Aronov New Homes showed appreciation to key volunteers, donors, cast and crew, by hosting a “wrap party” worthy of their efforts. This pinnacle event hinged on the tastes of the production crew based out of L.A. (the real one and not “Lower Alabama”). Praising the dishes synonymous with our region, the evening’s inspiration of southern chic quickly developed, allowing the opportunity to present a modern take on southern hospitality. The stunning ballroom at the Renaissance hotel, perfect in every way, provided an infectious feeling immediately upon arrival. Partnering with a florist whose expertise is as bold and edgy as her work itself, Montgomery’s own Jennifer Reilly offered show stopping floral art in vibrant hues. The ingenious use of authentic tree branches, hydrangeas and various southern stems created a visual indulgence that created much buzz among guests. Traditional mason jars delicately hung from the branches, providing soft candlelight that twinkled throughout the room. Additional specialty lighting deliberately furthered the illusion of warmth and kindness. Equally friendly, amidst the high-boy tables draped in chic black linens and ties (courtesy of Reception décor), guests lounged on three separate groupings of fabulous, modern stark-white couches (provided by Atlanta based rental company, Cort). Small printed cards with quotes by southern dignitaries, athletes, and artists also made for friendly conversation and exclusive keepsakes. A signature drink greeted partygoers and the recipe hailed from unmistakably southern, sweet tea. Called Sweet Trouble, this blend infused with Firefly Vodka was presented to curious tasters in genuine jelly jars. The center beverage station served as a focal point as the prominent logos for Aronov New Homes and Extreme Home Makeover were carved into ice by Chef David Bromley. Flanking both sides of the bar, guests gathered to watch the plasma televisions

offering a visual display of photos taken throughout the week. This personal touch emphasized the remarkable progress resulting from the attendees efforts. No one left hungry as every southern dish imaginable was offered by various local caterers, graciously partnering with this cause. Not only was the cuisine delicious, the presentation was imaginative. A favorite included the “grit bar”, where this southern staple was presented in martini glasses. Also a big “hit” were the piping hot biscuits and honey served from the kitchen of our very own baseball team. Demonstrating sweetness, Nancy Patterson’s decadent dessert display of miniature southern treats was rich in flavor and lovable goodness! To keep with the energy, several artists and bands provided entertainment to enhance the party’s flow. The mellow sounds of gifted singer/songwriter Jonathan Bloom were followed by the Todd Simpson Band. In addition, “northern” favorite, Jeremy Leslie, based out of Huntsville, brought plenty of southern rock and country favorites to the stage. Montgomery’s beloved party band, The Spicolis, rounded out the line-up. After a week of volunteering, guests kept the spirit alive as they volunteered their moves on the dance floor. Rare to have all four attend, expectations were exceeded as Ty Pennington and co-stars graced the event. Designers Eduardo Xol and Tracy Hutson along with builder Paul DiMeo, rounded out the cast, who were found mingling with guests throughout the night. Their positive comments in response to the event confirmed that Montgomery is beyond the sleepy-southern-town image. As a matter of fact, upon request the Spicolis played an additional 30 minutes, making the final “wrap” around 2am.

RSVP has made its reputation as the River Region party authority, so when it came time to throw a perfect soiree on the river itself, the magazine rose to the occasion for the first St. Pattyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s day cruise on the Harriott II. Two hundred happy revelers filled the three decks of food, music, and entertainment, as the whole group set off onto the crystal clear Alabama River just after sundown.

The party reached such an early, fevered pitch that the draft green beer was extinguished before the raucous crowd could finish the chorus to “Irish Eyes Are Smilin’.”

Irish eyes found plenty of other reasons to smile, however, as the other two decks each provided their own distinct pleasures. On the top deck, DJ Shannon Fontaine spun fresh grooves for anyone who preferred a quicker dance step. While in the lower deck, Lucky provided cool, soulful acoustic balladry to soothe those who needed a breather from all the excitement. For those who just wanted to take in the wonders of nature along the riverfront, starry vistas greeted them on all sides, as the pitch perfect weather ensured this was a fantastic maiden voyage for all the lucky adventurers in attendance!

LINDSAY ROGERS While some enjoy consuming wine, Lindsay Rogers’ profession is consumed with bringing it to us. Representative and Fine Wine Specialist for International Wines, this Psychology major and graduate from Auburn University is sure to help figure out a wine you’ll like. Influencing her life, her parents helped develop her work ethic by teaching her the importance of being diligent. While a lover of wine, this profession demanded that she overcome her fear of public speaking and lack of knowledge regarding varietals. Now a pro and constantly learning, she can be found at tastings around town or supplying your favorite local restaurants. She also has the fortune to meet the winemakers themselves from all over the world. She loves finding new and unique wines, introducing fellow wine-lovers to her discoveries, telling them the story behind each one, and seeing them start to love it too. Her most beloved possession is her 2 year old cockapoo named Ernie, who she deems the “love of her life”. For Lindsay, Montgomery is a large town providing that hometown feeling, and she is quite fond of the historical architecture found in our downtown area.

ERICK LEON ARMSTER There are few endeavors in life that are as rewarding as working with young people, as Erick Leon Armster can attest. Erick is the Director for the Central Alabama Area Fellowship of Christian Athletes. After graduating from Tuskegee University with a Bachelors degree in Construction Science and Management, Erick decided his calling was to make an impact on youth throughout the state who may feel hopeless and are seeking the direction a relationship with Christ provides. Erick credits his father’s unparalleled work ethic, laboring sunrise to sunset to provide for his family, and his father’s strong faith with instilling a determination in Erick to help others who do not have such an exemplary role model in their lives. His organization has a program called “OneWay2Play,” which promotes drug free athletics. Erick also takes his love for helping others to state inmates with the JAMM organization, for which he serves as a mentor. A great man once said: “there is an abundance of good advice, but a scarcity of good examples.” Erick Leon Armster daily provides a great example.

CAROL GUNTER Having a job that is directly involved with moving the city in a positive direction and helping create opportunity for its citizens is what keeps Carol motivated and energized. After graduating from Troy University with a double major in Public Relations and Print Journalism, she went to work for the City of Montgomery Parks and Recreation Department. (and 3 Mayors!) Her grandparents owned and operated the “Francis Cafeteria” in Montgomery and her mom being a single parent working hard as an RN, helped to instill opportunity and work ethic into Carol and her three sister’s lives. Married to Bill Gunter for 7 years and counting, the couple has 2 precious daughters - Hanna Grace (6) and Henlee (3). Carol has a lot to be excited about with all of the changes and reorganization happening in the Capital City under the leadership of new mayor Todd Strange, because she will be a part of the NEW Public Information and External Affairs Department. What a perfect fit for Carol who tells everyone, she resides and works in Montgomery even though she doesn’t HAVE to - but because she WANTS to!

TY EILAND Cautious not to run with them as a Master Stylist at Doug’s 2 Salon, Ty uses his scissors to create daring new looks. After earning his degree in Business Administration from Troy University, he exited the “corporate world” to pursue his passion. Apprenticing under the talented Doug Rice, he furthered his education in NYC, Miami and LA. Ty’s success could be considered his birthright, as his mother and grandmother both worked as stylists and greatly influenced his desire to do the same. His favorite thing about his career is “making someone’s day,” and he loves his clients who desire the latest styles and aren’t afraid to try something new. He volunteers with many charitable organizations including the Brantwood Children’s Home, ASF and the Montgomery Museum of Fine Art. He has two “four-legged” girls: Bailey and Banks, who are both twelve and have his heart. A great lover of nature, Ty also rides horses whenever he finds the time. Relationships can make or break a career in the advertising business, thus it is critical to manage them well. For Heather Sellers, a graduate of Ole Miss and currently serving as Marketing and Advertising Manager for Triton Management Group, this crucial marriage of the personal and the professional spheres comes so naturally that it’s no wonder her clients recommend her so highly. On any given evening, you might see Heather at a ballgame, ballet, Junior League event (she’s on the board), or the grocery store! Heather loves the friendly small town atmosphere in Montgomery, and her determination to reach the full scope of this “small” town is evident as she diligently works to reach her clients’ marketing goals! This hardworking gal still finds time to spend with her husband Rick, and their two children - Sarah-Scott (10) and Jackson (7). In addition, Heather also teaches Sunday school, serves on the Montgomery County School Board, and enjoys spin class at the gym! This would be a daunting schedule for anyone, but Heather pulls it off with style and grace, proving herself a true asset to the River Region.

Veterinarian Dr. Zeb Austin King may not talk to the animals like Dr. Doolittle, but his love of animals and his years of intense schooling provide pet owners with the next best thing! After attending high school at Locust Fork in North Alabama, Zeb finished two years of undergraduate work at Jefferson State Community College in Birmingham. He then attended Auburn University, where he achieved a Bachelors degree in Animal Science. Paying his way through school via the operation of his own landscaping business, Zeb still managed the 3.8 GPA necessary to be accepted to Auburn’s prestigious Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine program, where he eventually achieved his degree. All of this preparation led the good doctor into his chosen vocation with the Taylor Crossing Animal Hospital, a partnership with Dr. Robert Speight and Dr. Phil Mitchell which has allowed him to embrace both his love of working with animals, and his excitement at tackling new challenges each day. With his wife Michela (an aesthetician at Herron dermatology), Dr. King is also a proud new parent to daughter Ragan Lynn King, born October 29th, 2008! He and his family are proud active members of Frazer United Methodist Church, while Zeb also serves as part of the Central Alabama Veterinary Medical Association and has previously served on the YMCA boys work committee. Zeb loves the outdoors as well, finding time to operate a small landscape and irrigation business, as well as enjoying Montgomery’s many opportunities for scenic open-air family fun!

JENNIFER ATKINS Never one to be a creature of habit, Jennifer Atkins’ career has centered on thinking outside the box. With over 15 years success in the real estate sector, she is the current Vice President of Residential Land Development and Marketing for Aronov Realty. Awarded her Bachelors in Marketing from Auburn University Montgomery, she went on to receive her Masters in Business Management from Troy University Montgomery. Throughout her career she has worked for respected firms such as Jim Wilson & Associates and spent four years prior to her current role as the manager and developer for the popular neighborhood, Deer Creek. She names the support of her family as the key contributor to her success. Whenever she is working on a large project such as her most recent, Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, her family always supports her efforts by making things flow at home. Jennifer loves challenges and constantly analyzes processes to bring forth maximum potential. She serves on the Board of Directors for Camp Smile-A-Mile and the March of Dimes, and is an alumni of the prestigious Leadership Montgomery program. She and her husband Todd have eight-year-old twins: son Hunter and daughter Alexandra. A lifelong resident of Montgomery, Jennifer loves seeing familiar faces all over town.

STACEY LANCASTER Every bride dreams of the perfect wedding. For Stacey Lancaster, owner of Reception Décor, perfect weddings are more than a dream, they are her personal mission! CHAD REESE Before the Biscuits hit the first pitch, before there was a river walk, or the amphitheater cast a reflection in the water, there was the lone rider. Anyone crossing over the Alabama River looking down has probably seen him-just check out the cover of this issue of RSVP! (Go ahead, we’ll wait). That’s him, hanging in mid air over the Alabama River on his wakeboard. Would it therefore surprise you to discover that Chad also likes to hang cabinets? As a matter of fact, this semi-pro wakeboarder has been in the cabinet business for over 11 years. Chad is one of four owners of Grace Fabrications, LLC, and manager of the finishing department for that venerable company. In his work, Chad lives to hear the ecstatic oohs and ahs from homeowners and decorators who display his cabinetry work in their homes. His father, Mark Reese, was and still is a huge influence and motivator in his life, and Chad is making dad proud. Thriving on personal challenges, Chad recently felt the need to lose 30 pounds so as to better compete with the younger wakeboarders. Off the Wagon has hosted some of the hottest artists in the country including Saving Abel, Jason Aldean, 30 Seconds to Mars, Theory of a Deadman, Jamey Johnson, Taproot, Days of the New, David Alan Coe, and a seemingly endless list of who’s who in the music industry. Often times the smallest venue for these artists, Off the Wagon has created a venue that music industry professionals know about and respect. This has led to many of the artists seeking out the downtown Montgomery club when routing through the area. However, don’t be fooled by the long list of national acts playing Off the Wagon. The venue also hosts the best touring cover/ party bands around. The Poptart Monkeys, a regular at the venue, was once named “Best Cover Band in America” by Rolling Stone Magazine. Bands such as Fly By Radio, The 17th Floor, Splendid Chaos, The Ugli Stick, and others are on the Off the Wagon stage regularly and are the same acts that consistently play to packed houses around the southeast. It isn’t the hard rock club that many mistake it for. The diversity of the crowd and live entertainment makes for an exciting place to see a concert or just party with friends. “I am often surprised by how many people tell me they haven’t been to Off the Wagon. I sometimes think we are better known outside of the River Region,” owner/manager Chris Rambo says laughingly. “I can only hope that more people in the River Region discover what we have to offer as more traffic begins to flow through the downtown area at night.” Between band performances, the hottest dance tracks play inside the club. For those not ready to dance in front of the band, the club also has dartboards, pool tables, and video games to keep you entertained. “It is much more than just a concert club,” Rambo continues, “The atmosphere is pretty unique for this area. It has a feel of a bar in New York City or Atlanta or Birmingham.”

Off the Wagon has been a staple in the now resurging downtown area even though it was “on an island,” according to Rambo. “There are a few of us in the club business who have hung tough and believed in the downtown revitalization. There were some preconceived notions about the downtown area over the years, and I hope we have had some part in changing those.” Not only has Off the Wagon done much for the nightlife in the area, they are doing even more to improve the entertainment for everyone in the River Region. Last July, Off the Wagon partnered with Steve Hall and Montgomery’s Riverfront Facilities to bring Shinedown, with Theory of a Deadman and Black Stone Cherry to Riverwalk Amphitheater and Chris Rambo is personally promoting Skillet’s Comatose Tour 2009 with Skillet, Disciple, and Decyphur Down with Reaction Media on May 14th at Riverwalk Amphitheater. “That (Shinedown show) was a great event, and I know we can do even bigger and better things. I have a ton of ideas about how to improve the entertainment in the area, and I believe in Off the Wagon’s reputation in the music industry to bring in larger acts. I would also love to get involved in Jubilee Cityfest,” says Rambo. “There are so many things we can do with the existing facilities and the possibilities are endless.” As downtown continues to grow and more people discover what the area has to offer, people in the River Region will surely discover what it seems the rest of the country knows: Off the Wagon has something for everyone. As another birthday approaches (May 3rd—send gifts, cards & cash care of the magazine), I reflect on a uniquely varied set of experiences during my adult life. Some of these memories are recalled with a shudder, while others are best written off as youthful folly. In honor of this (thirty-something) birthday, Look Listen & Lounge enters the way-back machine to pay tribute to a few cool retro nuggets, in addition to a sparkling sample of piping-hot modern discoveries. May these treasures bring you as much enjoyment & inspiration as they have for this humble writer:

LOOK: Trainspotting (1994 film,Available on DVD) This year’s Oscars provided one of the great underdog stories in recent film as a small-budget indie production, Slumdog Millionaire, beat the odds to claim Best Picture. This earlier 1994 film not only introduced the world to the genius of its director Danny Boyle, it was also responsible for launching the career of its star, Ewan McGregor. Following the (low) lives of young heroin addicts in working class Glasgow, Trainspotting manages the singular feat of avoiding the after-school-special quality of most drug-related films, while managing to be a darkly comic, genuinely insightful coming of age story that moves with the adrenalized, heedless rush of youth.

LISTEN: Massive Attack – Mezzanine (1999,Album) Possibly the most gorgeously layered production work in the last decade is found in this, the brilliant third album for the revered collective from Bristol, England. After virtually creating the trip-hop/downbeat genre with their debut (Blue Lines), Massive Attack reinvented electronic music with sheets of noir guitar, throbbing bass lines, kinetic beats, and hauntingly beautiful vocals courtesy of Liz Frazier (also known as the singer for the Cocteau Twins). Some people will likely be familiar with the single “Teardrop,” (it serves as the theme song for the show “House”), but even that stunning track can’t overshadow the rest of this perfect album.

When one of Montgomery’s most hallowed scholarly institutions commemorates its golden anniversary, it is indeed a cause célèbre. Such was the case for the 50th anniversary celebration of Montgomery Academy, held on a bright, cheery Sunday afternoon in March at its Vaughn Road Campus. The school has come a long way since its inception in 1959, when 110 students first gathered to attend classes in the old Governor’s Mansion. Fifty years later, the school numbers nearly that many faculty members, many of whom were in attendance for the gala affair. Also in attendance were the six men who have served as principal of this vaunted capital city institution. More than a hundred visitors came to enjoy a tour of the school’s facilities, including Hill Hall, the Sahlie Commons, and its impressive new theater, which showed a documentary account of the campus’ rich history. The inspiring presentation also gave a intriguing glimpse of what the next fifty years might foretell at one of the River Region’s most respected places of higher learning.*

Among Montgomery’s array of talented local bands, there is one band that stands ready for a national audience. That band is ChromeHeart - a five piece modern rock ensemble that utilizes a heady brew of influences and melds them into a distinctively eclectic sound. Co-founder Mike Cuenco describes their mission simply: to “rock faces off.” Theirs is a multitalented formula for great rock, Ipod and radio ready, with a live show worthy of the big stage. ChromeHeart forged their origins here in the river region after its two founders, Chris Weidman and Mike Cuenco, worked closely for a 2005 project called DocRock. Emboldened by their creative synthesis as hired musicians on that project, Chris and Mike began a search to unearth the best talent in

the area for the expressed purpose of creating their own original music. After various short lived incarnations of the group, ChromeHeart found its full power when guitarist Drew Lankford, vocalist Joshua Hodge, and drummer Alex Staton were added to the group, forming their modern day lineup. These crucial additions finally allowed the ChromeHeart sound to coalesce. “We finally found the group of guys we wanted to make the sounds that we wanted,” said Weidman about the new lineup. Inside countless hours back at the ‘shed’ (ChromeHeart slang for the band’s rehearsal space), each member adds a musical ingredient to create their astonishing audio entrée. Weidman outlines these finished works as

“anything from a punk based song to a blues based song to a metal based song.” The results often create in their audiences what Lankford describes as “total shock and disbelief.” “They’re not expecting to hear a band like us coming out of Montgomery, Alabama,” adds Lankford. ChromeHeart found it initially difficult to get original material heard in the area, as Montgomery’s music scene is predominated by cover bands. These days, however, the songs discussed after the band’s shows are their own – a powerful validation of ChromeHeart’s original mission. Whether or not you have heard ChromeHeart’s previous recordings, it is

vital to take a listen the new tracks. The fruits of their labor yielded the release of a new EP titled Glance. The recording was conducted at Black Dog Sound in Stone Mountain, GA, with acclaimed producer, Rick Beato (Shinedown, Bullet for My Valentine) there to sharpen the band’s sound to a fine edge.

Since then, the buzz surrounding ChromeHeart has risen to a fever pitch. Among its most vocal supporters has been Rick Hendrick, programming director at 95.1 the Fox, who recently had the quintet in studio for the “Locals Only” radio show. “ChromeHeart is definitely the next band with the possibility to make it to the ‘next level’,” commented Hendrick. “I’ve heard a lot of local bands through the years that were good but not quite good enough to make it to the ‘next level’, and they are ready to make that jump. Their dedication and hard work are just a few qualities that impress me about them. They have a great stage presence and a huge amount of energy when onstage.” Speaking of onstage, a Glance CD release party was held at the famed local concert venue Rock Bottom American Pub on January 31st . “One thing that we have been proud of is that Vinnie [the owner of Rock Bottom] has always been a supporter of ours…cultivating our music,” Weidman notes. During the release party, ChromeHeart provided a mesmerizing live show of original material to an ecstatic reaction from the packed house.

“We were expecting the worst going in,” Hodge tells of working with such a high caliber producer. “We went in open to any of his suggestions and input, and he really liked what we had.”

“We had a great time and always appreciate playing for a fun crowd,” noted Lankford. “That is what makes playing music enjoyable! Rock Bottom always treats us right and we just hope the fans keep coming out!”

Much to the band’s surprise, Beato changed only one chord and made minor useful suggestions. Both the band and Beato finished the session with mutual admiration, as Beato enthused over ChromeHeart’s ability to reproduce their stellar originals time after time.

Troy University’s Davis Theatre �� originally opened on January �� 25, 1930, as a “Movie Palace” �� and Vaudeville house. After closing in 1976 (ironically the last feature was Gone With the Wind), the theatre was purchased by Troy University, renovated and reopened in 1983 as Troy University’s Davis Theatre for the Performing Arts, named for the late Tine W.
