Marilyn Monroe said it best with her statement, “I don’t know who invented high heels, but all women owe him a lot”. There is something to say about the connection between a woman and her favorite pair (or pairs!) of heels. With warm weather afoot, it’s time to show off that pedicure in high style. Put some spring into your step and head to one of our favorite shoe spots, Dillard’s. Whether you are looking for elegant and classy or fun and flirty, they have the right shoe to give toes the perfect peep show. One of the biggest trends to debut this season is the Nautical Theme. The Gianni Bini “Railay” is the perfect wedge to salute your red, white and blue. This navy slingback wedge is the goto shoe for any seafaring outfit. Take ‘em or weave ‘em, woven kicks are intermixed in new collections this year. The “Juniper” Espradrille by Michael Kors with white gold straps and natural woven platform, elevates your look in a flirty sundress. If daring color is your signature, raise eyebrows and your stature with the Steve Madden “Ammanda” yellow t-strap wedge. One more plus, the height of the wedge and platform shoe slenderize legs! Adorning another shoe season is our perennial favoriteembellishment. The Vince Camuto “Orlando” pewter heel is perfect for a day at work or a night on the town. The beautiful beading is ideal for dressing up your favorite little black dress. The BCBGeneration “Ambra” adds that needed pop of color with the faceted turquoise stone. The last mentionable trend is a mashup of stepworthy style: neutral colors and embellishment. The blush-colored Gianni Bini “Natal” portrays this trend to perfection and its stacked platform heel with neutral stone detailing is one of our favorite looks this season. Steep in controversy, no one can say for sure who invented the high heel, so perhaps Marilyn was right. We do owe whoever he is a lot (or was it a she?). The last Singled Out “What’s Your Status?”, questioned how declaring single and zero affects ones psyche. Basically we determined the benefit of which is having more free time to indulge in whatever it is we want to do, so consider this as somewhat a continuation of that thought…

or me, pedicures are the selfish act of choice, but recently my selfabsorbed retreat was tested. Body nestled into the pulsating shiatsu chair, feet dipped in warm water and swirling in humming jets, no sooner did my eyelids shut than I hear the same looming question in Vietnamese dialect. It was something like this: Nail Salon Guy: “You Married?” Me: “No.” Nail Salon Guy: “You have children?” Me: “No.” To cease this questioning, I chose my standard comedic reply: “I’ve tried it before but it didn’t work.” In retrospect, I must express gratitude to You Tube for preparing me forward and thwarting this potentially damaging moment through the unlikely source of comedian, Anjelah Johnson. Like many of you and sixteen million other viewers, I’ve watched Bon Qui Qui perform her 14

RSVP MAY/JUNE 2010

Nail Salon bit! Recalling this, I laughed to myself and waited for him to tell me “if I upgraded to the deluxe I’d get a boyfriend”, but he never did. Be clear that I am not stereotyping or mocking him. Actually, I frequent this particular salon because it’s affordable and convenient, but more so because there’s something I admire in people who are brave enough to leave everything that feels like home in order to work and live the American Dream. Plus he won me over with his next words, “You pretty”. Mind you, I had basically rolled out of bed on a Saturday morning to land in his leatherette chair, and the only thing sticking out more than my puffy eyes were the stray hairs from my jumbled ponytail coifed the dateless night before. That’s when I realized I liked him even more. His technique was much more effective than the reenactment on cyber tube. Aware I didn’t look my best, he made me feel good about myself and in return, I gave him a better tip. He may not have grown up

in our culture, but he’s learned one thing about American women: flattery gets you everywhere! Just like someone in a foreign land, that’s what life can feel like after a break-up or divorce. It feels as though we have to learn a new culture and decode a far-off language. At our weakest, life continues and we have to make difficult choices and take risks in vulnerable moments. To gain confidence in our decision making, the best practice is starting where the risks are minimal but results are satisfying - like choosing a color at the nail salon. This decision may seem idle, but psychologists and marketing analysts have long studied how color choices relate to our behaviors and personalities. If you find that approaching the dating scene leaves your disposition less than sunny yellow, make a new statement that declares vibrancy no matter what your situation. They just want to go

Once you begin to discover yourself clearly as an individual, you will find you are more prepared to take a risk. Perhaps the greatest test of indecision is plucking an offered selection and knowing a color (or date) is right for you. After all, people are not glass bottles with plastic removable tops. Some blanket true feelings under a sober exterior while others cover up their sinister side with a lovely shade of lavender. Introspection is the best armor for combating a naïve heart awarded purple for bravery, and surviving a harsh experience ultimately finds us matured and equipped for relationship choices of simplicity or flamboyance, nonchalant or deliberate- whatever color matches our current mood. By observing my Vietnamese friend (whose name I’m unclear), I aspire to be braver and bolder not only in my dating life, but life in general. In speaking to him I know upon immigration, he has only visited his home country a few times due to flight durations over 24 hours and costs soaring above $3,000. What that said to me is he came to America with purpose. He knew the global impact of moving half a globe away and yet risked it all for the opportunity to live a dream. What inspiration in a time where we as citizens shy away from taking a stand or making lifelong commitments! Sometimes it takes an “outsider” to remind us how truly remarkable our color-wheel of opportunity (dating or otherwise) is. So if you want to put your best foot forward, enjoy selecting a hue as remarkable as you. Polish enthusiasts agree that a favorite brand for nails is O•P•I. The quirky titles lend to menial mischief and sassy fun, so I asked my best single gal pals their favorite color, and was surprised to find sound advice for dating singles: O•P•I for the Frivolous Dater I’m Indi-a Mood for Love. Come with me, and We’ll Party in My Cabana. There’s no limit on time, we’re usually out Teal the Cows Come Home, so tell the babysitter you’ll return when there’s Sand in My Suit. O•P•I for the Reluctant Dater If You Don’t Know Jacques about relationships we recommend speed dating, where after your mini-date you may need to confess, I’m Really not a Waitress. Once that Elephant Pink has left the room, do the same and return home for a Bubble Bath. He’ll call to invite you on his Private Jet and you may find yourself in Chicago at O’Hare and Nails Look Great! But if the phone doesn’t ring, just call a girlfriend and remember- Who needs a Prince? Most of all -choose the color that best compliments you! an interview with AUM’s Michele Olson, PhD, FACSM

eeking to get our heart rates on the rise, the impending swimsuit season has us rising from the couch. With renewed vigor and devotion to health, some of us treat fitness like most everything else in our society; instead of a reasonable yearlong approach, we find ourselves binging in the quest for better health- mainly for vanity’s sake. On the contrary, Michele Olson, PhD devotes her life and career to fitness, specializing in exercise physiology research. From the Pacific Northwest, she first came to Montgomery one summer during college as part of the Junior Development Program at the O’Conner Tennis Center. Her talent was quickly noted and upon the offer to attend Huntingdon College on scholarship, she traded her home state of Oregon accented in majestic landscape to accept an educational opportunity accented in southern drawl. Not only did she pick up on the slang, she went on to earn her doctorate from Auburn University. Post graduation, she was chosen by her alma mater and worked as a professor of Human Performance and Kinesiology at Huntingdon for 5 years before moving to her current role at Auburn University Montgomery. As Research Director for the Human Performance Research Lab, she has tested the efficacy on well-known products like the Bender Ball. What makes Michele unique is that she is among a handful of women to earn a doctoral degree in her respected field. Setting herself apart further, she was the first to study Pilates and it’s effectiveness on abdominal conditioning. Compelling results of her specialized research allows her to be considered an expert on abdominal exercise. She is sought after nationally to provide commentary and case studies to research the effectiveness of various abdominal products. Earning the title of Fellow of the American

RSVP MAY/JUNE 2010

College of Sports Medicine (FACSM) for Outstanding Service to Research in Exercise Physiology, she serves on the boards of Fitness magazine, Health magazine, and the Journal of Dance Medicine and Science. A feature in last January’s Self magazine awarded her the catchier title of “Dr. Abs” for her expertise on Pilates abdominal exercise. One conversation with Michele and you will know why she is sought after. She is intellectual and personable, which blends nicely to offer a straight forward approach to fitness. With all the fads clouding the direction of consumers, in our search to be healthy, she points us towards simplicity and recalls the lessons of our youth. “Remember the kinds of foods your mother gave you.” Olson reminded of a time when our mothers made sure we had breakfast before leaving for school (where P.E.

class was not optional). Our day of school usually concluded with a snack at home, followed by some kind of outdoor physical activity before being called to supper. Not so long ago, there was a time when family dinners were standard and the real treat was not dessert, rather earning the reward to go back outside and play a little more before settling in for the evening. This led to an insightful conversation about the state of our society and the health of our state. Just last month, Montgomery was named the most obese city in our nation (based on BMI), so naturally Michele had clear insight on how to combat this statistic. “The best way to change this trend is to start with the children and have safe places for kids to go after school and play. Whether in church gyms or parks, these opportunities need to be low cost and near the neighborhood where kids live”. Olson further advised, “Children need about 2 hours of vigorous activity per day.” Our cultural “biggie-size” shift has largely impacted the health of our nation and the lessons we continue to impart on the next generation. We are a culture who desires more, requiring more money, causing us to work more. Michele laughingly recalls, “When computers first came out, there was the thinking that we would be able to reduce our work week to 4 days”, she continued, “Instead we have used the efficiency of technology to triple the load in the same 5 day work week and, we often work more days.” Reverberating in truth as cell phones, emails and text messages demand our full attention; this 24 hour accessibility finds us spending more time in drive- thrus and less time in the gym. The good news is Dr. Olson offers practical suggestions for maintaining a healthy lifestyle while

She does not condemn those who cannot live on a frenchfry-free diet, but reminds that frequency and portion control is the key. “When McDonald’s first opened, they only had one size.” Whether choosing fast food as a result of the decline in our budget, time, or willpower, she encourages us to make smarter choices - like ordering the small fry and regular hamburger. Not only does she point out the positive benefits of exercise towards stress, she offers proof that even those with little time can get into shape. “While one hour of moderate activity is best, if you cannot commit to that, make small goals to exercise 10 minutes at a time. Research supports that the same outcome can be achieved from three 10 minute sessions as 30 consecutive minutes”, she counseled, “And activities like dog walking or playing with your kids count towards that total as well.” Proving her passion further, Michele has choreographed and starred in two fitness DVD’s for those who want a fast work-out with bikini worthy results. The first is titled “The 10 Minute Solution: Kettlebell Ultimate Fat Burner”, which can actually be performed with a regular dumbbell and has 5 mini-workouts that are 10 minutes each. Her latest DVD, “The Fitness Prescription: Perfect Legs, Glutes and Abs”, is comprised of 2 twenty-five minute segments and sequenced to provide fast results. More impressive, she not only starred in this DVD but flexed her business muscle to produce it. It is now available at www.amazon.com. This was also a fun endeavor for her husband Brian, a marketing professional, who helped develop her product packaging and press kit. Those of us in the River Region are truly blessed with a great location. As spring and summer beckon us into their warm embrace, we begin to feel the urge to get away and relax. Do you really want to drive for hours and hours, or jump on a plane to find your style of R&R? Well you don’t have to! Our central locale means that within a few hours or less, we have the opportunity to enjoy splashing lakeside, exploring the trail or sunning on the beach. A trifecta of nearby indulgences awaits us, so we asked a few of our writers to share about their favorite spots to retreat.

Lake Martin offers all you could want out of a vacation or weekend getaway, and you can be there within the hour. If you are lucky enough to have your own place on Lake Martin, you are probably thinking that entertaining the masses can be as much work at it is relaxing. However, it is possible to enjoy yourself as host, and offer this experience to your friends, your family, and your family’s friends (and their friends too) with no fuss or muss. Don’t miss out while your guests laugh, swim, sun and munch. Instead, hop in the boat and head to a casual lunch. What seems like a task and a long drive by car becomes a relaxing afternoon and part of the whole lake experience. You will be glad you ventured from Kowaliga over to Blue Creek. Dinner can be made easy when entertaining friends at the lake by calling upon your local wine & butcher shop or an

area personal chef to put together a basket of marinated steaks ready for grilling and prepared side items. You can pick it up as you head out of town for the weekend or run by Catherine’s Market at Russell Crossroads near Kowaliga when you arrive. For those of us who do not already have our own piece of paradise on Lake Martin, we can still plan a getaway to the lake. If you want to just get your feet wet with a day trip, renting a boat for the day is the perfect way to take in all that this picturesque lake has to offer. For those ready to make a weekend of it, check out Vacation Rentals by Owner’s website, www.vrbo.com. It is a great resource wherever your travels may take you. You will find condos, cabins and homes for rent. The more adventurous types may want to pitch a tent at Wind Creek State Park. It’s a great affordable day or weekend option. They have a fishing pier, hiking trails, and playgrounds providing entertainment for all ages. Lake Martin has something for everyone and is just around the corner. It’s so close you can almost call it a stay-cation. Just think: within an hour you will feel that weight lifted as you kick back and watch the sun glisten across the glass-like waters of beautiful Lake Martin.

After being asked to write an outdoor article, I immediately dusted off the packs, stoves, and myriad other tools essential for any gadget junkie headed towards the wilderness. Then after realizing the article theme was Reasons to Gather and not Great North American Wilderness Trecks, I re-stowed MAY/JUNE 2010 RSVP 23

the gear and decided to write about two great venues, easily accessible from the River Region by car and with cooler (and without bear repellent). The first is one of the River Region’s true gems, Lanark Plantation. Located in Millbrook and owned by the Alabama Wildlife Federation, Lanark was specifically established to preserve Alabama’s natural heritage. The Plantation contains over 300 hundred acres of prime Alabama forest, crisscrossed by immaculate hiking trails and boardwalks. The trails pass beautiful ponds, and cover upland forests, hardwood bottoms and swamps (via elevated boardwalk). The AWF maintains a world class conservation education center at Lanark, and throughout the year it hosts numerous events and lectures, teaching children and adults the principles of wise-use and stewardship of our wildlife and related natural resources. Being just 10 miles drive from downtown Montgomery makes this a very convenient and enjoyable afternoon trip. Information is available at www.alabamawildlife.org/lanark/.

Chewacla State park is another excellent venue for either a day hike or an overnight car camping trip. Located in Lee County just off I-85, it is easily accessible for a short trip. Chewacla contains 696 acres of trails, a 26 acre lake, camping areas, newly renovated cabins, and the enjoyable (though manmade) Chewacla Falls. pril 15 is perhaps one of the most dreaded of all dates on the calendar for most Americans— the date on which tax forms are due. For accountants, the date is doubly significant, as they must not only have their own paperwork turned in but also the forms of their many clients. The accountants and employees of Jackson Thornton let out a collective sigh of relief at the end of business on April 15th, as their most “taxing” work day of the year had come and gone. Now was time for celebration at Alley Station, the spot reserved for a special party. Approximately 200 grateful people showed up at Alley Station that night, and those that did were treated to a regal spread of fine foods, signature cocktails, and great music. Leslie Bailey’s Extraordinary Events catered the event, and their contributions were a feast for the eye and the palate. Petite poppyseed rolls stuffed with roasted beef, blue cheese crumbles, crispy onion straws, and horseradish cream was a culinary reward fit for a king, as was the succulent hand pulled pork barb-q on cornbread muffins, topped with a dill pickle. The sassy coleslaw was a great addition, and the macaroni n’ cheese bar had a line all night. RSVP coordinated an event with a wealth of entertainment. Dueling pianos regaled the crowd all night, with an interactive show that included the audience participating and requesting oldies, top 40, and even college fight songs. The custom drink tickets, cups, wine labels, and spring flower arrangements gave the room an ornate, sophisticated feel, and the smiling expressions of all in attendance marked the evening a resounding success. This was an event that even the tax man couldn’t ruin.

Being one of my favorite musical productions from childhood, I was screaming “leapin’ lizards!” as I watched the story of the freckle-faced, redheaded orphan come to life on the stage of the Montgomery Performing Arts Centre. The musical opened with “It’s the Hard-Knock Life,” the melodic portrait of institutional living in Manhattan during the Great Depression. Miss Hannigan, the lonely-little-girl-hater played by Lynn Andrews, had the crowd in stitches with her comically inept attempt to play mom to the adorable group of orphans. The youngest orphan, Molly, captivated my attention with her triple threat talent and confidence on the stage. However, our favorite orphan, Annie, stole the show with her big voice in her hopeful songs, “Tomorrow” and “Maybe.” Billionaire Daddy Warbucks swept our hearts with his strong-willed attempt to find Annie’s missing parents, along with the help of President Roosevelt and the entire United States military forces. Despite the efforts of con artists Rooster and Lily, in the end, Annie is right where she needs to be. I can truly say that I was “fully dressed” with a smile throughout the entire performance.

OneRepublic with the Rocket Summer Band Union Station Train Shed -March 13, 2010 By: Katherine Mallini

Montgomerians had the opportunity to “Stop and Stare” at one of the most current bands on the 2010 tour scene. OneRepublic, lead by singersongwriter Ryan Tedder, delivered a performance fit with “All The Right Moves”. With the Train Shed packed by a few hundred, Tedder and company brought together the likes of rock, pop, classical, and symphonic tunes all rolled into one. The group performed hits from their 2007 album, Dreaming Out Loud and their 2009 album, Waking Up. To further entertain the crowd, Tedder shared personal stories of his childhood days playing football and his most recent experience with flying. (note to travelers, he is convinced that commercial planes barrel role) OneRepublic came to life thanks to the popular site MySpace and like Toyota; they haven’t tapped the brakes yet! This current tour is scheduled to take them all over Europe then back to the US. That busy schedule must be the reason for referencing Birmingham while playing in our Capital City, but finding humor as he misspoke and inspired by his performance, concertgoers were quick to forgive. Unlike the lyrics of their hit song, it’s never too late to “Apologize”, and the night was memorable leaving behind dedicated Montgomery fans eager for more.

As Montgomery continues to grow, so does the caliber of talent the city is able to persuade to perform at our venues. Colbie Caillat brought her tour to Montgomery’s Riverwalk Ampitheater on a friday night in April for her first ever stop in Alabama. Fans packed the outdoor venue on an evening perfect for music under the stars - and Colbie did not let them down. The songwriter and guitarist,, who got her start in 2006 by uploading her tunes on MySpace, thrilled the audience with her hits like “Realize”, “Bubbly” & her latest “Fallin’ For You”(a current hit on Mix 103). Colbie grew up in California and Hawaii where the laidback lifestyle is reflected in her music. Her debut album “CoCo” is almost double platinum status and her hit single “Bubbly” spent 14 weeks at #1 on the Billboard Top 40 charts! If there was any disapointment, perhaps it was the lengthy downtime between the opening act (who did a fantastic job with just an acoustic guitar) and Colbie’s entrance - but she was definitely worth the wait! As always, gifts are by no means mandatory (though highly encouraged), but attendance of the little cultural party known as Triple-L is essential. LOOK: [rec], Film, Horror Props to my west coast sibling for recommending this ingenious little Spanish horror film. Remade in the US as “Quarantine” (avoid the remake at all costs), this scary little small-budget movie centers around a late-night TV reporter going on a seemingly-innocuous assignment at a firefighters’ station. Yet when they receive a call at a Barcelona apartment building, they find themselves in the midst of a full-blown epidemic of a virus which turns its’ victims into vicious, bloodthirsty zombies. Although the plot is a tried and true one, the jittery, “you are there”-style handheld camera gives the film a terrifying immediacy that is rarely found in modern horror. Watch it on DVD in the dark, and get ready to cover your eyes.

SURF: The Hype Machine www.hypem.com For those with adventurous musical tastes who aren’t happy unless they’re up on the latest cool bands (your humble columnist, for instance), there is no better resource than this website. The site’s motto expresses it succinctly: “Every day, thousands of people around the world write about music they love — and it all ends up here.” The Hype Machine is an invaluable resource which collects links to music blogs all over the world, especially those that provide listening posts or video links, and then provides them for your perusal. Perhaps even more useful is the “Search” function, which allows user to search for a favorite band or song, then links to a place where one can check it out. As essential as Pandora in its own way, the Hype Machine is a bookmark you will find yourself visiting over and over.

KEON ADDISON “Expect the unexpected” is the motto of 5th grade teacher Keon Addison. Born in Greenville, Mississippi, Keon moved to Montgomery 19 years ago to pursue a bachelor’s degree in early childhood and elementary education from Auburn University Montgomery. He then began teaching at Wares Ferry Elementary School, where his profession has continued to excite and challenge him every day for eight years. When he’s not in the classroom, Keon is still dedicating his time to children. As a certified personal trainer, he is a launching a fitness program for kids called “Unleashed Potential”. The program is a proactive approach to the state’s increasing child obesity rate. Keon’s goal is to encourage kids to make healthier diet and exercise choices. “It’s time to make a change, and it doesn’t start with the adults - but with kids.” “Unleashed Potential” is scheduled to launch in June. In addition to being a positive influence in the lives of children, the self-proclaimed bachelor enjoys playing guitar, exercising, singing and expanding his culinary skills.

KAIT PARKER Weather wonder woman Kait Parker didn’t exactly fool around during college. Before giving Montgomery its morning and afternoon weather reports, the WAKA, CBS 8 Morning Meteorologist served as a peer advisor, student teacher and an intern at one of the top newscasts in the nation in Dallas, Texas. The University of Missouri graduate also serves as a liaison for CBS as a community events coordinator and loves getting involved in the community. Kait is proud to be able to help secure the safety of the public during harsh weather conditions, and to further public education on weather phenomena by visiting schools and organizations to provide information on severe weather and safety precautions.“If I can be responsible for providing the accurate and timely information to help save one person’s life, then my entire body of work will have been well worth it.” The self-proclaimed science nerd spends her down time volunteering with the Montgomery Humane Society, hanging out with her adopted dog, Brewski, and traveling.

RYAN JOHN SNELL While most 13-year-old boys focus their time on J.V. sports and cheerleaders, Ryan John Snell, founder of Ryan John Ministries, began his career at this formative age. He traveled with his church part time to speak at events and rallies until becoming a licensed minister at 18. Ryan continues to travel today with his non-profit ministry to inspire and reach out to students, but he also does a little more than speaking. Along with friends Mark Kirkland and Andrew Mohney, Ryan founded the Ryan John band and they just released a new album entitled Beautiful Scars. With an album just released, the band has been featured on several radio stations, including local station 101.5 The River. Ryan is not only a guitarist and minister, but also a young entrepreneur as well, serving as part owner of Kirkland’s Lawn Care, which provides landscaping throughout the River Region. Inspired to succeed by his dad’s upstanding character, Ryan says he is living out his dream every single day. “Every day I get to do what I love and see lives changed at the same time.” Ryan is currently pursuing his master’s degree at Liberty University. We would like to congratulate Ryan on his recent engagement to Sarah Gilchrist.

RACHEL TEARS For Rachel Tears, fighting animal euthanasia isn’t just her vocation, it’s her passion. After receiving four degrees from Auburn University, including a Ph.D. in Industrial/Organization Psychology in 2002 and working as a senior consultant for business leaders, Rachel founded the state’s first high volume, highquality, affordable spay and neuter clinic in 2007. Even though she enjoyed her work as a consultant, this animal advocate knew she was meant to make a significant impact on the lives of animals. Her goal is to severely reduce the extremely high number of animals that are euthanized in the River Region, and she has been doing so since the clinic’s opening in October 2007. Not only has she dedicated her professional life to animals, she shares her personal life with 10 rescued dogs. Rachel is currently a board member of Spay Alabama and the Alabama Humane Federation and a member of the Montgomery Junior League. Her husband Steven and two daughters, Lily and Violet, inspire her to be great every day.

HADRYAN VAUGHN While many of us may take wearing flip flops or going for a walk for granted, Hadryan Vaughn, Doctor of Podiatric Medicine, increases opportunities for those that can’t. After receiving his D.P. M . degree from the Temple University School of Podiatric Medicine in Philadelphia, Pa. and gaining specialized training in foot surgery from within the Temple University Health System and Thomas Jefferson University Health System, Hadryan opened his own practice in Montgomery to dedicate his life to improving the look and function of feet. His office, Vaughn Podiatry Center, opened 11 years ago and is thriving with up to date treatments and surgeries that improve the quality of life of his patients. Hadryan attributes his success to the influence of his parents and the support of the Montgomery community. When the busy doctor is not in his lab coat, he enjoys spending his free time with his wife LaShondra and their two children, Harrison and Carly. Besides being a doctor, husband and father, Hadryan is also a fisherman, aspiring chef, and shoe and sports car fanatic.

SUMMER PATTERSON For Senior Art Director of Matrix, LLC, Summer Patterson has a passion for the arts which found its roots in a basic art class in the 7th grade. The graphic designer and photographer continued her studies at the University of South Alabama in Mobile, where she received a Bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts. During college, Summer was the photo editor of her campus paper, Zapp photographer for local college events, and was never caught without her camera. Upon moving to Montgomery, she worked for Community Communications Inc. and Reid/O’Donahue Advertising Inc. before taking her place at Matrix, LLC. Although her profession can be a bit stressful with its strict deadlines, Summer loves the excitement and creativity of it. Whether she’s in her office, hanging out at home with her husband, Thomas and three dogs, or relaxing on the beach, Summer can do her job anywhere as long as she has her laptop, camera and internet access. When she’s not taking pictures and designing layouts, Summer enjoys volunteer work, gardening and grilling out. She is also a member of the Junior League of Montgomery, Public Relations Council of Alabama, Mystic Society, independent sales consultant for Mary Kay, and last but not least, graphic designer for RSVP Montgomery!

LEANNE THOMPSON Like many successful professionals, it took Mix 103 More Music Morning Show co-host Leanne Thompson a few different jobs and states before finding her calling. A native of Pensacola, Florida, Leanne’s resume includes positions in New Orleans and Dallas and five years in the U.S. Navy before taking her place in Montgomery as a charming cohost. Although a great deal of the River Region listens to her on their drive to work, Leanne is not one who has always craved attention. “Believe it or not, I was petrified to speak in front of people - let someone else have the spotlight.” With the help of fellow host and husband JT, Leanne was able to overcome this fear. After a lot of moving, the scrapbook lover finally feels at home in the community, along with her family – which includes three girls (Kimberlee, Ashlee and Rebecca Lynn), three dogs, and one “potty trained” cat. Leanne is also an active member in various charities, including the Children’s Miracle Network, Joy to Life and the Walk and Wag, along with what she says is her greatest achievement of all: being a mother.

CRAIG VINSON Whether it be with a new curio, couch or cupboard, Craig Vinson, Jr., owner of Granville Home Furnishings, and his talented team strive to bring life into the homes and businesses of the River Region. Craig’s story began with a Bachelor’s degree in Corporate Finance from the University of Alabama, followed by a Master’s degree in Business Administration from Auburn University Montgomery. Craig and his wife Suzanne bought the furniture store in 2008 after he spent 11 years with Starke Agency, Inc. Granville offers premium indoor and outdoor furniture and accessories for the home, along with office furniture to add personality to local businesses. To be successful in their work, Craig and the Granville team simply work to discover each client’s unique style and then find the right home furnishings to match their visions. Craig also serves on the board of the Alabama Retail Workers’ Compensation Fund, the Paseo Movement, and Camp Chandler. At home, Craig and his wife Suzanne are raising three children – Anna, Adele and Trey.

QUINTON ROSS Alabama State Senator Quinton T. Ross, Jr. fights for public education on a daily basis. The former principal of Booker T. Washington Magnet High School has anything, but a boring background. Before holding his current titles as Director of Adult Education at H. Councill Trenholm State Technical College and State Senator, the honorable public servant was a statewide field representative for the Alabama Democratic Party. He served on the State Advisory Committee for President Barack Obama. Senator Ross began his career with a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science before earning his Master’s degree in Education from Alabama State University. He is currently working on his ED.D in Educational Leadership, Policy and Law from Alabama State University. In an effort to inspire a hunger for knowledge among the community’s students, Ross serves as a motivational speaker and mentor for aspiring educators and public servants. Reared in Pontiac Michigan, the Mobile, Alabama native has been recognized as a rising star in politics and education. He has been given many awards to his honor. Senator Ross has made it his mission to motivating young minds to “Grasp the Light of Knowledge through Diversity”. His most notable accomplishment is being a husband and proud father of two sons.

AMY STRICKLAND Audiologist Amy Botts Strickland has the unique opportunity to ensure the best possible care for the most precious and vulnerable of patients, newborn babies. As the Newborn Hearing Screening Coordinator for the state of Alabama in the Alabama Department of Health, Amy has dedicated her professional life to increasing the opportunity for newborns to have a high quality of life. Though she no longer treats patients, her recommendations and referrals are vital to guaranteeing newborns proper medical attention for threatening genetic diseases. Before acquiring her position, Amy achieved the highest levels of education and training in her field. After receiving a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree from Auburn University, she completed an internship in Atlanta before receiving her clinical doctorate from Salus University. The mother of two is also passionate about volunteer work and is a member of The Junior League of Montgomery and Leadership Montgomery. She strives to be an excellent model of character to her children, Daniel and Lucy. “If I want Montgomery to be a place where my children can thrive; it starts with me to make it happen.”

MICHELLE WATSON With a dedication to impeccable customer service, Michelle Watson has taken the position of 311 Customer Service Supervisor for the city’s new 311 Access Montgomery call center, a resource where citizens can seek information regarding anything from weather inquiries to directions. After growing up in Atlanta, Michelle moved to Montgomery after attending Morris Brown College. She began her career in the state’s capital with the City of Montgomery Food & Catering Service. Working with talented people and delectable food wasn’t the only perk of the job, as it was here that she further realized her passion for assisting and serving customers. Michelle strives to make day to day life a little easier for the citizens of Montgomery and believes that having the ability to help others increases her satisfaction with not only her profession, but her personal life as well. Michelle loves the southern hospitality of Montgomery and is excited to be a part of the city’s expansion. She enjoys traveling, reading, and spending time with her niece and nephew, TaShianna and Anthony.

BILL RAYMON, CFP(r) From the mountains to the river, University of Colorado graduate Bill Raymon came back down to sea level to help Montgomery citizens prepare for retirement. After receiving a degree in business Bill left Boulder, Colorado to begin his financial planning career in 1997 with A.G. Edwards and Sons, which eventually became Wells Fargo Advisors. With a concentration on retirement planning, Bill’s days are spent helping clients prepare for a secure and steady future by anticipating possible financial needs. It’s not just talk of finances and 401K for the proud father of two, however. The Certified Financial Planner slips out of his tie at night to play drums with his band, The Signals. The band is a group of four friends that have been together since high school, and play an eclectic selection of songs from bands such as the Grateful Dead, REM, and Bob Dylan. Fans of great local music can catch the band at select dates in town, and they can be seen at Crockmier’s this July.

A Hug from Taylor Swift On April 26, pop and country music superstar Taylor Swift stopped in Auburn to play a surprise concert for more than 350 of her closest fans at The Hotel at Auburn University. The venue’s intimate setting gave fans access to an up close and personal performance. Auburn University students Michael Wekall and Ryan Leander had been working on an audacious plan for months to hug the country music star. Their quest began in January with a YouTube video announcing their quest to “do something big.” The plan exploded into a media network of Facebook and Twitter posts and Web sites, following the video dialog between the AU students and Swift. The concert came together after the pair received the last set of instructions from Swift: to gather as many people as they could for a karaoke sing-along.

La Fete Escapes to Paradise

Cool breezes, great music, and a picture-perfect sunset welcomed guests to the Garrett Coliseum recently for the 51st annual La Fete ball. The women’s mystic society celebrated at this year’s event with the theme “La Fete Escapes to Paradise.” More than 120 active members of the group, along with 60 honorary members and Past Queens were “on-board” to carry out the group’s theme throughout the night. The entryway to the ball was a bridge with oversized torches, which led to the hallway where guests picked up a cool margarita from twin tiki bars. A beach scene at the entrance to the ball included pictures taken of La Fete members in their own “paradise.” The theme was carried out throughout the Coliseum with grand decorations and realistic scenery including fabulous cabanas, tiki torches and bamboo curtains. The bar areas were covered with tiki huts embellished with tropical themed white lights, and throughout the venue, there were plenty of pineapples, beach balls, and flamingos that added to the ambiance. Dance routines performed by the members were all examples of locations that the Queen and La Fete members considered to be “paradise”the Bahamas, Puerto Rico, Jamaica, the lake, and the beach. Guests danced until the wee hours to the sounds of the band 4 Barrel Funk from Mobile, Alabama. Tunes included Motown favorites to hits from the 80’s, with revelers singing along to the familiar music.

Jonalan Wright By Blue by Sullivan Davis Nix and Rob Aldridge are two musicians whose talents perfectly compliment each other. Both are bright, talented, brimming with creativity, and having a shared love of American music and its rich history—rock, country, folk, and soul. Meeting at a music festival in Tennessee, the two quickly formed a bond that would pay off in their current fruitful musical partnership, which began nearly a year ago and now finds them playing fiery live dates throughout the River Region and recording both an EP and what Rob calls a “mini documentary.” RSVP sat down with these two local favorites to talk about what brought them together, their own personal journeys and influences, and what’s next for Davis & Rob: RSVP: How did you guys meet? Davis: I met Rob at a music festival in Sewanee, TN called Sewaneroo. I was playing an acoustic show right before his slot. We each got 30 min. I was playing with a guy named Sam Lewis, who is a talented singersongwriter and who also grew up playing with Rob. Sam introduced me to Rob while hanging out in the artists’ tent. Ended up combining our sets together. That was the first time we jammed. Played one hell of a show if my memory serves me right. Rob is the true musician in the duo. I stick to more of the managing side and keep things consistent. 46

RSVP: What about your individual journeys? How did you each become musicians?

Davis: I grew up with a father and a mother who always played music in the house. Mom was a piano player, and Dad was an old school picker. He actually released a couple vinyls back in the 70’s and 80’s. He taught my brother and I our first chord progression. I believe it was “Love Can Build A Bridge.” Meanwhile, mom was taking us to piano lessons that i just dreaded going to. Rob: I grew up listening to my dad’s CD collection, everything from Billy Joel, the Allman Brothers, the Beach Boys to Marvin Gaye, the Commodores and Al Green. Dad also played guitar, so one day I just picked it up. At about 13, I started learning really fast, found I had a knack for figuring out songs by ear, really enjoyed writing songs, was gigging by 14 and been trying to make a living out of it ever since.

RSVP: What musicians that you listen to have most influenced your own work? Davis: Grew up listening to a wide range of music in my dad’s car from The Allman Brothers to Clint Black. I have always enjoyed the “chicken pickin’” country licks growing up along with the solid southern rock licks that the Allman Bros would kick out. But I would have to say my favorites would be Bob Dylan, Ryan Adams, and you could add some Phish in there. But mainly Dylan and Adams. Can’t listen to them enough. Rob: I’ve tried to answer this question so many times and always find myself giving different answers...honestly I try and take something useful from everything I listen to in order to develop my own songwriting, so I guess you could say everything I listen to is potentially inspirational.

RSVP: Who are you listening to right now? What’s on your iPod? Davis: I am currently listening to The Wood Brothers - Ways Not To Lose. Solid album. Also keep Blonde on Blonde - Bob Dylan and Cold Roses Ryan Adams a click away. Rob: Me and ole “swoop” Nix are usually listening to the same or similar music. Ryan Adams definitely gets a lot of play time right now. I’m also enjoying any music with really dirty electric guitars in it at the moment, but I get bored with any one genre pretty quick… I don’t have an iPod…I’m a pretty low-tech guy, hate computers....but I love CDs and records. I want something to hold! I wanna read lyrics and look at album art, but at the moment I’m listening to the Dexateens, Pearl Jam, the Avett brothers, and Jakob Dylan.

RSVP: What artists outside of music influence you? Davis: Tarantino is a badass. Some Cohen Brothers as well. Rob: [Calvin & Hobbes creator] Bill Watterson.

RSVP: Tell us about how you write songs… Davis: Rob you answer this. I don’t write, i compliment. Rob: Sometimes the music comes first, sometimes the lyrics come first. Sometimes I write a lot, sometimes I can’t write for months...I don’t get it, but I love it.

I guess you could call it that. Rob: Everything is always in the works. [laughs]

RSVP: How does performing live change what you do? Davis: I love playing live and being a part of the entertainment. We have a good chemistry going and have grown as musicians over the year we have been playing with each other. It opens up to some fun jams. We have surprised ourselves with certain jams a good bit. Always refreshing. Rob: Well right now playing live almost completely consumes my time, so lately it’s hard not to write highway songs.

RSVP: What are your favorite live experiences? Davis: My favorite live experience would be at Alley Bar. We play there roughly once a week. There have been a couple times that we just killed it and completely rocked out. Good times. Rob: There honestly isn’t one specific show that I could call the best, but sometimes everything just flows right. You’re feeling it, then the crowd feels it, then it transfers back to you and multiplies how you feel it, then back to the crowd again and everything keeps building…it makes you just wanna jump out of your skin to create a moment like that...so really the fact that can happen at any given show keeps my job pretty exciting. I’ll never stop chasing those moments.
