about the arts centre gair am ganolfan y celfyddydau

introduction rhagair Welcome to a new season at Aberystwyth Arts Centre. As well as a great range of theatre, dance and music this is also very much a season of festivals. The International Ceramics Festival at the start of July, the largest event of its kind in the UK, attracts over 1,000 potters from all over the world. Musicfest, our classical music festival and summer school in July, is a week long series of courses, masterclasses and concerts featuring some of the best musicians in the UK. The Digital Storytelling Festival, our newest festival, is a mix of inspirational speakers, workshops and a chance to showcase the best of Digital Stories from Wales and the rest of the UK. No summer would be complete without our own professional musical production, this time The King and I, with some of the greatest songs from the golden age of musicals together with a compelling story. Michael Bogdanov and Anthony Williams return as the team that proved so successful on Fiddler, West Side Story and My Fair Lady. Finally a project we have been working on for six year, the Creative Units Development, is now completed. They are the sixteen studios situated in the wood adjacent to the Arts Centre. Designed by top UK designer Thomas Heatherwick and innovatively clad in crumpled stainless steel, they are now home to artists, film makers, arts development agencies, publishers , arts businesses and our own Artists in Residence Project bringing together artists from the UK and around the world. Croeso i dymor newydd yng Nghanolfan y Celfyddydau Aberystwyth. Yn ogystal â dewis gwych o theatr, dawns a cherddoriaeth mae hwn hefyd yn ˆ yl Serameg Ryngwladol ar ddechrau mis ˆ yl. Mae’r W dymor ambell i W Gorffennaf, y gweithgaredd mwyaf o’i fath yn y DU, yn denu dros 1,000 o grochenwyr o bob rhan o’r byd. Tra bod Musicfest, ein gw ˆ yl gerddoriaeth glasurol ac ysgol haf ym mis Gorffennaf, yn cynnig wythnos o gyrsiau, dosbarthiadau meistr a chyngherddau yn nodweddu rhai o’r cerddorion ˆ yl Adrodd Straeon Digidol, ein gwˆyl fwyaf gorau yn y DU. Mae’r W diweddar, yn gymysgedd o siaradwyr ysbrydoledig, gweithdai a chyfle i gyflwyno’r gorau o’r Straeon Digidol o Gymru a gweddill y Deyrnas Unedig. Ni fyddai unrhyw haf yn gyflawn heb ein cynhyrchiad cerddorol proffesiynol, sef The King and I y tro hwn, gyda rhai o’r caneuon gorau o gyfnod euraidd y sioeau cerdd ynghyd â stori afaelgar. Mae Michael Bogdanov ac Anthony Williams yn dychwelyd fel y tîm a fu mor lwyddiannus gyda Fiddler on the Roof, West Side Story a My Fair Lady. Yn olaf, mae’r prosiect yr ydym wedi bod yn gweithio arno ers chwe blynedd, sef Datblygiad yr Unedau Creadigol, yn gyflawn bellach. Dyma’r un ar bymtheg o stiwdios a leolir yn y coed wrth ymyl y Ganolfan. Wedi eu dylunio gan y cwmni blaenllaw Thomas Heatherwick, gyda gorffeniad unigryw ei olwg, maent yn gartref i artistiaid, gwneuthurwyr ffilm, asiantaethau ym maes y celfyddydau, cyhoeddwyr, busnesau celf a’n Prosiect Artistiaid Preswyl sy’n dod ag artistiaid o’r DU a ledled y byd at ei gilydd. Sandy Brown: The Still Point and the Dance “At the still point of the turning world. Neither flesh nor fleshless; Neither from nor towards; at the still point, there the dance is...” Sandy Brown has been called ‘one of the great individualists of British ceramics’. This large scale ceramic installation is the most ambitious project she has yet undertaken, originally inspired by T. S. Eliot’s poem ‘Burnt Norton’ (from ‘Four Quartets’). The exhibition as a whole celebrates the possibilities of the clay medium, with forms and intentions far beyond the familiar and domestic. Ystyrir Sandy Brown yn ‘un o’r mawrion ym maes serameg Brydeinig’. Y gosodwaith serameg hwn ar raddfa fawr yw ei phrosiect mwyaf uchelgesiol hyd yma, wedi’i ysbrydoli’n wreiddiol gan un o gerddi T S Elliot. Mae Sandy Brown yn cydnabod bod ei dawn i greu celf trwy glai yn dod yn sgil y gallu i gyrraedd y distawrwydd creadigol, sy’n caniatau i’w natur ddigymell lifo, ac mae’r arddangosfa yn mynegi’r gred hon.

Cefnogwyd y prosiect hwn gan Gyngor Celfyddydau Lloegr This project has been supported by Arts Council of England

Pot Luck This exhibition brings together leading international artists who explore the subject of food in art; including Bobby Baker, Gayle Chong Kwan, Lia Anna Hennig, Anya Gallaccio, Antony Gormley, Subodh Gupta, Aaron Head, Damien Hirst, Anthony Key, Studio Orta, Vong Phaophanit and Claire Oboussier, Manuel Saiz, Jana Sterbak and Karen Tam. From early depictions in mythological scenes, to those found in religious art of all cultures; from symbolic meanings to formal concerns, food has been presented in many guises and for many purposes by artists throughout the ages. Cynthia Morris Bell and Anthony Key have conceived this exhibition as a ‘Pot Luck’, an informal gathering where everyone contributes to the shared table, highlighting some of the contemporary approaches to ideas of food in art.

Mae’r arddangosfa hon yn tynnu at ei gilydd artistiaid blaenllaw rhyngwladol sy’n archwilio’r testun o fwyd mewn celf. Mae bwyd wedi cael ei gyflwyno ar lawer ffurf ac at amrywiol bwrpas gan artistiaid ar hyd yr oesoedd. Mae bwyta er mwyn byw a bwyd fel cyfrwng pleser wedi mynd llaw yn llaw erioed ac mae’r arfer o gyflwyno bwyd er mwyn difyrru ac ennyn parch gwesteion yn mynd yn ôl i’r hen wlad Roeg a Rhufain a chyn hynny. Gellir cysylltu bwyd â dyheu, pleser, bywyd a marwolaeth. Gall hefyd fod yn iaith, neu’n arwyddlun diwylliannol, ac fe’i defnyddir gan artistiaid i fynegi llawer o agweddau gwahanol o fywyd ac i wneud sylwadau ar gymdeithas.

Subterranean Architecture, Stepwells in Western India

Winning artists this year are: Martina Lindqvist; Alice Myers; James Pogson; Kurt Tong and Nicky Walsh.

Photography by Richard Cox

‘PORTFOLIO MAGAZINE of CONTEMPORARY PHOTOGRAPHY’

Artist Richard Cox has been a regular visitor to Western India, but his last three visits were to document Stepwells, a little known aspect of traditional architecture. Stepwells were constructed over the last 12 centuries in India to provide water in the arid regions of Rajasthan and Gujarat; they also offered cool rest areas for travellers and even a place to socialise and to worship.

Cyflwynir yr arddangosfa hon fel cynulliad anffurfiol lle mae pawb yn cyfrannu at y bwrdd a rennir, a chanolbwyntir ar rai o’r syniadau cyfoes am fwyd mewn celf.

The water was reached by a series of steps. The combination of groundwater and rainwater would fill the wells during the Monsoon and as the dry season progressed the water level dropped. Some Stepwells are simple, but the Hindi structures built through royal patronage are often more elaborate, with sculptures of deities and animals. Alice Myers

Coming soon: Stan’s Cafe presents: ‘Of all the People in All the World’ - a performance piece in the Gallery. You will never look at rice in the same light again…

Although a great many of the wells are beyond repair, the Government has decided to restore some of the important sites, in recognition of their place in traditional Indian architecture.

Mae’r ffotograffydd Richard Cox wedi ymweld yn rheolaidd â Gorllewin yr India ac ar ei dri ymweliad olaf bu’n cofnodi’r Stepwells, sef agwedd anghyffredin ar bensaerniaeth draddodiadol y wlad. Adeiladwyd y Stepwells dros y 12 canrif ddiwethaf i ddarparu cyflenwadau o ddwˆr; buont hefyd yn cynnig llefydd i ymlacio ar gyfer teithwyr ac hyd yn oed lle i gymdeithasu ac addoli. Cyrhaeddwyd y dwˆr trwy gyfres o stepiau. Mae rhai o’r strwythurau yn syml ond mae eraill, a godwyd yn sgil cefnogaeth ariannol frenhinol, yn fwy cymhleth, gydag addurniadau manwl yn cynrychioli duwiau ac anifeiliaid. Yn y bedwaredd ganrif ar bymtheg adeiladwyd pympiau yn lle’r ffynhonnau ac mae’r rhan fwyaf ohonynt yn sych erbyn hyn. Er nad yw’n bosibl atgyweirio llawer ohonynt mae’r Llywodreth wedi penderfynu adfer rhai o’r safleoedd pwysicaf er mwyn cydnabod eu lle mewn pensaerniaeth draddodiadol yr India.

7th British International Mini Print Exhibition This, the third Mini-Print exhibition, was selected by open competition from over 1000 international entries. The prints are on an unusually small scale: the requirement was that the print area had to be less than 70 sq.cm. Making easily readable prints on this scale, which also have a strong presence, is challenging, and printmakers throughout the world responded to the challenge.

Cynhaliwyd cystadleuaeth agored i ddewis y gorau allan o 1000 o geisiadau rhyngwladol ar gyfer y drydedd arddangosfa hon o fân brintiau. ‘Roedd yn rhaid i’r printiau fod yn llai na 70 centimedr sgwâr a chafwyd ymateb brwd gan wneuthurwyr print ledled y byd i’r sialens hon. Gwahoddwyd nifer o artistiaid blaenllaw hefyd i arddangos eu gwaith. Trefnwyd yr arddangosfa gan Gyngor y Gwneuthurwyr Print.

The International Ceramics Festival is one of the world's most prestigious events for professional and amateur potters. The festival, which takes place every two years attracts visitors from across the globe who travel to join their fellow ceramicists in Mid Wales. 2009 is no exception with over 800 ceramicists and potters gathering for the weekend to discuss ceramic techniques, watch demonstrations and share ideas. This year the festival will play host to demonstrators from all over the world including Japan, the USA, China and France. Among the highlights for 2009 there will be demonstrations and a lecture by the highly influential American ceramicist Don Reitz, spectacular kilns from Nina Hole and Tom Barnett, plus demonstrations of thrown, slab built and sculptural ceramics - and much more.

A new artistic community has grown up beside the Arts Centre, and the Artists in Residence are part of this. Two artists at a time, selected from an open submission and supported by grant aid from Esmée Fairbairn Foundation, stay in Aberystwyth and work in the Creative Unit studios nos. 1 & 2 for three months, developing their practice as they wish.

Aberystwyth Arts Centre has the following exhibitions on tour: Aberystwyth’s latest touring exhibition, ‘Albania: Land of the Living Past’, by Welsh photographer Rhodri Jones, tells the story of a people bound by their past and confused by the realities of facing a new century. This exhibition opened at the Lighthouse Media Centre (Poole) in November 08 and is on show at Oriel Theatr Clwyd until 26 April 2009. Magnum Photographer David Hurn’s exhibition ‘A Welsh Life’ has already shown in galleries in Wicklow and Wexford (Ireland), at Jersey Arts Centre, The Civic Hall, Kronberg (Germany) and Newport Gallery. It is showing at Wales House, Brussels as part of the European St David’s Day Celebrations until May.

Ellie Rees

The following exhibitions are in preparation and will be available to other venues: Ellie Rees was one of the Arts Centre’s artists in residence earlier this year; an exhibition of her work will be shown in Gallery 1 in the autumn. Featured will be filmed productions of her sophisticated, rehearsed performances - frequently absurd and humourous - which consider human struggles and desires from the female viewpoint. We Are Family looks at the institution of the family through the eyes of artists. It identifies the changes that have resulted in different styles, processes and techniques, and embraces a diverse range of artistic styles from the highly conventional ‘classic’ portrait to surrealism, the kitchen sink school, social realism, semi-abstraction and abstraction. The exhibition will be available to tour in late 2010. Jordan Baseman- An Event in the Village Jordan Baseman's work interrogates belief systems and the personal and intimate aspects of people’s lives. His films investigate ideas around contemporary portraiture, narrative structure and the manipulation of recorded information. An Event in the Village opened at Aberystwyth Arts Centre last November, and comprised a new film shown alone, alongside a programme of three other film works shown sequentially, including the eponymous Event in the Village. It is available to tour in 2009.

Mae’r arddangosfeydd canlynol yn cael eu paratoi ar hyn o bryd a byddant ar gael i deithio i ganolfannau eraill: Cynhelir arddangosfa o waith Ellie Rees, un o artistiaid preswyl y Ganolfan, yn Oriel 1 yn yr hydref. Nodweddir cynyrchiadau ar ffilm o’i pherfformiadau soffistigedig a baratoir yn fanwl - yn aml yn wirion ac yn ddoniol - sy’n mynegi dyheuadau a brwydrau’r bod dynol o safbwynt y fenyw. Mae We Are Family yn edrych ar y teulu trwy lygaid artistiaid. Mae’n ffocysu ar y newidiadau sydd wedi arwain at wahanol steiliau, prosesau a thechnegau ac mae’n cynnwys amrywiaeth helaeth o ddulliau artistig, o’r portread clasurol confensiynol i’r swreal a’r haniaethol. Bydd yr arddangosfa ar gael i fynd ar daith yn 2010. Mae gwaith Jordan Baseman yn cwestiynu systemau cred ac agweddau personol a dirgel bywydau unigolion. Mae ei ffilmiau’n archwilio syniadau sy’n cwmpasu portreadau cyfoes, strwythurau naratif a defnydd gwybodaeth sydd wedi’i chofnodi. Agorodd An Event in the Village yn y Ganolfan mis Tachwedd diwethaf. Bydd ar gael i fynd ar daith yn 2009.

Until the end of May, Elen Bonner and Dave Cushley will be in residence, and from June until the end of August there will be Vicki Kerr and Michelle Sank. Each artist will give a talk about their work, and there will be an Open Studio day towards the end of their stay. To be informed of these events, please ask to be put on the (free) mailing list by calling 01970 622887 or email etr@aber.ac.uk. Mae cymuned artistig newydd wedi datblygu wrth ymyl Canolfan y Celfyddydau ac mae’r Artistiaid Preswl yn rhan ohoni. Ceir dau artist ar y tro, wedi eu dewis o geisiadau agored a gyda chefnogaeth cymorthdal gan Sefydliad Esmee Fairbairn, yn aros yn Aberystwyth ac yn gweithio yn yr Unedau Creadigol am dri mis, yn datblygu eu hymarfer yn ôl eu dymuniad. Elen Bonner a Dave Cushley yw’r artistiaid preswyl tan diwedd mis Mai ac o fis Mehefin tan diwedd mis Awst cymerir eu lle gan Vicki Kerr a Michelle Sank. Disgwylir i bob artist gyflwyno anerchiad am ei waith a chynhelir Dydd Stiwdio Agored yn ystod y cyfnod preswyl. I dderbyn gwybodaeth am y digwyddiadau hyn gallwch fynd ar restr bost trwy ffonio 01970 622887 neu ebostio etr@aber.ac.uk.

Elen Bonner is an early career artist who lives and works in Ceredigion. Central to her practice are the concerns, motivations and interests of those around her, and through her work she tries to interpret what it means to live in contemporary rural Wales. Mae Elen Bonner yn byw ac yn gweithio yng Ngheredigion. Mae’n ymddiddori yn y bobl o’i chwmpas a thrwy ei gwaith mae’n ceisio dehongli beth y mae’n golygu i fyw yn y Gymru wledig gyfoes. Mae ei gwaith presennol yn edrych ar yr hyn sy’n ein gwneud yn unigolion, yn gymunedau ac yn genedl.

Vicki Kerr

Vicki Kerr was born in New Zealand but is currently living in London. She collects photographs from a variety of sources, then transforms them into objects using modelling materials such as plasticene. Ganwyd Vicki Kerr yn Seland Newydd ond mae’n byw yn Llundain ar hyn o bryd. Mae’n casglu ffotograffau o wahanol ffynonellau ac wedyn yn eu trawsffurfio’n wrthrychau trwy ddefnyddio deunydd modelu megis plastisin.

Wild Wales: Elen Bonner

Dave Cushley is an artist currently living and working in South Wales, who has exhibited throughout the UK and internationally. His work is an irreverent fusion of the absurd, of post-structuralism and an unhealthy obsession with the meaning of craft. Mae Dave Cushley yn byw ac yn gweithio yn Ne Cymru ar hyn o bryd ac mae wedi dangos ei waith yn rhyngwladol. Mae ei waith yn gyfuniad amharchus o’r gwirion, ôl-adeileddaeth ac obsesiwn afiach gydag ystyr crefft.

Michelle Sank

Michelle Sank was born in Cape Town, South Africa and has been living in the UK since 1987. She is a critically acclaimed photographer whose portraiture reflects a preoccupation with the human condition and which can be viewed as social documentary. Ganwyd Michelle Sank yn Ne Affrica ac mae wedi bod yn byw yn y DU ers 1987. Mae hi’n ffotograffydd uchel ei pharch ac mae ei phortreadaeth yn adlewyrchu consyrn am y cyflwr dynol - gellir ystyried ei gwaith bron yn ddogfen gymdeithasol. Mae hi wedi cyhoeddi sawl lyfr.

The Thorn Birds A Musical This spring, The Wales Theatre Company plan to unleash their most adventurous project to date, with the world premiere of a new musical version of The Thorn Birds. Colleen McCullough’s block buster novel has sold over 30 million copies worldwide and was originally adapted for screen in the iconic TV mini series of the 80’s starring Richard Chamberlain and Rachel Ward. Now this pulsating saga has been turned into a sensational new musical, with book and lyrics by Colleen McCullough, music by German opera star and composer

The London Mozart Players brings a special performance to the Arts Centre. Ten musicians will perform live music to the silent film The Cabinet of Dr Caligari. Composer Lynne Plowman has written a new score to accompany this fantastic film. The Cabinet of Dr Caligari is regarded as one of the most influential German expressionist films and also as the first true horror film. Made in 1920, it tells the tale of Dr Caligari and his sleepwalking friend Cesare, who is an attraction at a local carnival and he prophesises someone’s death. The villagers chase Dr Caligari and Cesare as they suspect their involvement with the murder. The plot twists and turns to bring the film to an unexpected end. It will make for an entertaining evening combing great music and great cinema. Mae Chwaraewyr Mozart Llundain yn dod â pherfformiad arbennig i’r Ganolfan! Harnisch Lacey Dance Theatre

Trio Joubran

The Rare One

Exit & Out

Following their stunning UK premiere in Wales three years ago, we are thrilled to welcome back Le Trio Joubran. These three young Palestinian brothers - Samir, Wissam and Adna - are the world’s only oud trio. For their second visit to Wales they are joined by percussionist Yousef Hbeisch whose artistic contribution brings a new dimension and richness to their music.

The Rare One is back again for yet another eclectic mix of live music and DJs!

Harnisch Lacey Dance Theatre are a multidisciplinary and internationally acclaimed company. They will be performing their latest double bill Exit & Out, two brand new dance works which fuse contemporary dance, street dance, popping and breakdance. Introducing BBoy Flypz (Welsh BBoy Champion 2007) as part of the all male cast, Exit & Out offer a merging of contemporary and hip-hop dance culture, plus original music by Katherine Summers and vocal percussionist ‘beatbox’ Imran Kaiza Khan.

With their skillful, heart-wrenching improvisations that evoke the landscape, culture and people of Palestine, the trio conjure up harmony and sweetness, depth and joy. On stage, their eyes meet and their instruments unite to express that which the spoken word cannot. Between musical ecstasy and sumptuous silence, the trio carries its audience from elation to melancholy. Their overwhelming stage performances are both precise and overflowing with emotions that take the audience's breath away. Mae’n bleser mawr gennym groesawu’r Trio Joubran yn ôl yn dilyn eu hymweliad â Chymru tair blynedd yn ôl. Dyma dri brawd ifanc talentog o Balesteina sy’n creu profiad cerddorol anhygoel efo’u hofferynnau a’u harmoniau. Mae eu perfformiad ar y llwyfan yn berffaith gywir ac yn llawn emosion - bydd y gynulleidfa wrth ei bodd! www.letriojoubran.com

Headlining this very special event are Breakbeat legends The Freestylers. Dyma theatr ddawns aml-ddisgyblaethol gydag enw da yn rhyngwladol, yn perfformio dau ddarn newydd sbon sy’n cyfuno dawns gyfoes, dawns stryd a dawns-brêc. She Stoops to Conquer Directed by Peter Doran Mappa Mundi’s new production of Oliver Goldsmith’s groundbreaking 18th Century farce. Two foppish suitors travelling to a country manor house are tricked into believing it to be a tavern in a practical joke played by the irresponsible and irrepressible Tony Lumpkin. Upon arrival the dandies treat their host, the longsuffering Mr Hardcastle, like an innkeeper. But this works to the advantage of his pretty and intelligent daughter Kate, who cleverly disguises herself as a bar-maid in order to win the heart of her disastrously tongue-tied suitor. A brand new Welsh-language production of Lorca's ‘The House of Bernarda Alba’, a masterpiece on the theme of frustrated desire.

Directed by Harry Durnall Sarah is a midwife working for Medecines Sans Frontieres in Darfur. A tragic death brings her home, and disturbs her sense of who she really is. Can she reconstruct her life from the remnants her twin sister left behind? Stephen Todd’s radio play, Proud Songster, was one of the four winners of Channel 4’s ‘The Radio Play’s The Thing’ competition. In 2007 he was one of four writers selected for a year long Writers Development Programme with award winning playwright and dramaturg Kaite O’Reilly, organised by Aberystwyth Arts Centre. His play, The Remnants of Once Fine Girls, had a rehearsed reading at the Arts Centre in February 2008 as part of the first Travelling Light New Writing Festival. Y perfformiad cyntaf o ddrama newydd sbon gan Stephen Todd. Mae Sarah yn fydwraig sy’n gweithio yn Darfur. Mae’r dramodydd hwn wedi ennill sawl gystadleuaeth ac mae ei ddramâu wedi cael eu perfformio mewn theatrau ledled y Deyrnad Unedig.

Swan Lake is one of the most loved of all classical ballets and one of the most popular in the Royal Ballet repertory. Against this atmospheric setting, Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov’s choreography provides an opportunity to see great dance partnerships in the leading roles and the whole Company in the dance ensembles. Illuminated by moonlight, the charged solos for the Prince and Odette and her alter-ego Odile, the machinations of Von Rothbart and the colour of a palace ball all combine with glorious music to make for an afternoon of inspiration and romance. Cider with Rosie By Laurie Lee Adapted by James Roose - Evans Directed by Harry Durnall At all times wonderfully evocative and poignant, Cider with Rosie is a charming memoir of a childhood in a remote Cotswold village, a world that is tangibly real, and yet reminiscent of a now distant past. In this idyllic pastoral setting, unencumbered by the callous father who so quickly abandoned his family responsibilities, Laurie’s adoring mother becomes the centre of his world as she struggles to raise a growing family against the backdrop of the Great War.

“Never to be forgotten, that first long, secret drink of golden fire, juice of those valleys and of that time, wine of wild orchards, of russet summers, of plump red apples... and Rosie’s burning cheeks... never to be forgotten... or ever tasted again.” LAURIE LEE Dyma gofnod swynol o blentyndod mewn pentref eidylig anghysbell yn y Cotswolds byd sy’n real ac sydd eto erbyn hyn yn bell yn y gorffennol. Gyda thad sy’n esgeuluso’i gyfrifoldebau teuluol, mae byd Laurie yn troi o gwmpas ei fam sy’n brwydro i ofalu am ei theulu yn erbyn cefndir y Rhyfel Fawr.

Je suis dead

Heavenly Love Project

Room on the Broom

Conceived and written by Fool’s Proof Theatre

An evening of 3 new individual works by Shirotama Hitsujiya, Davida Hewlett, and Anushiye Yarnell.

How the cat purred and how the witch grinned, as they sat on their broomstick and flew through the wind…

Shirotama presents her new solo work Break the Ice. She tries to seek and suggest new views and images of society, the world and women.

The witch and her cat are flying happily on their broomstick - until a stormy wind blows away the witch’s hat, bow and wand.

Directed by Gey Pin Ang Je suis dead is a show about inheritance, or everything we carry with us from our families and cultures. What stories are we living which are not our own? What happens when inherited lines meet? Three strangers’ lives collide after a train accident. As daily life crumbles around them, strange ancestral figures start breaking through the cracks. Stories tangle into an increasingly confused knot, while three ordinary people desperately cling to what they believed was reality. Who, when, where? What the hell is going on and whose story is it anyway?

This is one to look out for, so search for them, wherever you can, and let there be no excuses for missing out if they’re in your area. THEATRE IN WALES Dyma sioe am etifeddiaeth, neu’r hyn ‘rydym yn cario o gwmpas gyda ni sy’n deillio o’n teuluoedd a’n diwylliant.

Davida Hewlett presents Bubble Writing (Heavenly Love), a performative lecture with singing, dancing, questions to, and answers from the experts. Davida Hewlett is an artist working in variable combinations of video, performance, writing, and music. Her work is often playful and humorous, context responsive, and made involving others. Anushiye Yarnell performs a new piece “Pas de Deux - (with shopping trolley)”. Her performance works unfold a dimension synergising fantasy and reality, reconstructing fragments from the realm of everyday life into existential, functional daydreaming. Her works draw on personal experience, past and future mythologies, notions of paradise and civilisation, dreams, and cultural diversity.

A helpful dog, bird and frog find the witch’s lost things, and they all hop on the broom for a ride. But this broomstick’s not meant for five and CRACK - the broom snaps in two! When a hungry dragon appears, who will save the poor witch? And will there ever be room on the broom for everyone? Songs, laughs and scary fun for children aged 3 and up (and their grown-ups), adapted from the book by Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler, creators of The Gruffalo. Cynhyrchiad sy’n cynnwys caneuon, chwerthin a lot o hwyl i blant 3 oed a throsodd a’u teuluoedd, yn seiliedig ar y llyfr gan Julia Donaldson ac Axel Scheffler.

Noson o 3 darn unigol newydd gan Shirotama Hitsujiya, Davida Hewlett, ac Anushiye Yarnell.

Darn dawns newydd wedi’i ysgrifennu ar gyfer plant 4 oed a throsodd. Mae’r sioe hon, sy’n ddarn ar gyfer chwech o ddawnswyr, pianydd a llefarydd, yn cael ei hysbrydoli gan fyd y cabare yn yr Almaen yn y 1920au. Ceir yma gymysgedd difyr o ganu, cerddoriaeth, dawns, theatr a fideo ac mae’r darn yn seiliedig ar straeon yr Ugly Duckling a Swan Lake.

Paolo Levi is the greatest violinist in the world. But he refuses to play Mozart. Why? This brand new dramatisation of Michael Morpurgo's extraordinary story takes us from the beauty of Venice to the horrors of the Nazi gas chambers in a tale that will move and inspire both young and old. A wonderful and poignant piece performed by actor/violinist Andrew Bridgmont. Not suitable for children under 8. Running time 55 minutes.

“I’m thrilled to bits. I just think that the quality of what Scamp do is amazing.” MICHAEL MORPURGO, THE INDEPENDENT Mae’r addasiad newydd sbon hwn o stori eithriadol Michael Morpurgo yn mynd â ni o bryferthwch Fenis i erchylltra siambrau nwy y Natsiaid mewn stori a fydd yn ysbrydoli’r hen a’r ifanc yn ogystal. Darn gwych, hiraethus a berfformir gan yr actor a’r feiolinydd Andrew Bridgmont. Dim yn addas ar gyfer plant o dan 8 oed.

He wonders if his childhood beliefs can still stand him in good stead: will wholesome sandwiches and a decent torch really be enough? Themes will be fearlessly tackled and illuminated by pertinent reasoning and original music. Dare you miss it? Yn ei sioe ddiweddaraf mae Jez yn synfyfyrio ar yr hen broblem o’r bywyd hwn, y posibilrwydd o’r bywyd nesaf, a’r camau rhwng y ddau. Ymdrinir â’r themâu mewn ffordd ddewr ac hyderus - a cheir hefyd gerddoriaeth wreiddiol. Peidiwch â’i methu!

A new dance piece written for young children four years of age and over. The Ugly Ducklings’ Dancing Cabaret, a work for six dancers and a pianist\master of ceremonies, draws its inspiration from the German cabarets of the 1920s, and the fairytale world. In a series of short numbers, which follow one another, reality and artifice intersect in a sunny mix of song, music, dance, theatre and video. Based on Hans Christian Andersen’s tale ‘The Ugly Duckling’, who's rejected by others because he's different and who dreams of being a swan; and ‘Swan Lake’, which features Odette, who's turned into a part-time swan against her will, hindering her chances of love with the Prince! This improbable meeting between the Ugly Duckling and Odette is the focus for a work that looks at dreams and illusion.

Twenty five years on, Billy Bragg arrives in Wales on a special eight-date solo tour to remember the Miners' Strike and its legacy on the communities across Wales. Ex-punk, ex-soldier, and ex-member of the Labour Party, Billy Bragg rose from working class origins in the 1980s to become one of the UK's foremost pop and protest singers and left-wing icons. It was Margaret Thatcher who propelled the Bard of Barking into action; Bragg's defining political moment came with the Miners' Strike of 1984-5, when the Conservative government set out to lay waste to Britain's industrial heartlands, crippling communities and livelihoods in the process. Bragg became a fixture at political rallies and benefits, particularly during the Strike, with his powerful pro-union songs including Which Side Are You On, There Is Power In A Union and the EP title track Between The Wars. A rebel in every sense, Bragg is best known for his passionately political lyrics, but also admired for his offbeat love songs. This unique man continues to prove that music still has something to say about political causes, and, thank goodness, has a sense of humour. Pum mlynedd ar hugain yn ddiweddarach, mae Billy Bragg yn ymweld â Chymru ar daith arbennig 8-lleoliad i gofio Streic y Glowyr a'i effaith ar gymunedau ledled Cymru.

Stan’s Cafe

Home of the Wriggler Fri 19 June Gwener 19 Mehefin 7.30pm

£8 (£7)

In a disused factory, away from the raging weather, a team of investigators unearth the legends of a city, the fragmented stories of the people who lived there, and the mythical things they made called cars. Home of the Wriggler is a fresh take on documentary theatre. Combining research and speculation, the show unravels the threads of a thousand people’s stories to ask, who are the people who make the sandwiches, who cut the hair, who teach the kids, of those who shape the parts that make the cars that fill our roads. Full of humour and with a haunting conclusion, Home of the Wriggler examines how our personal fates are entwined, for better or worse, with an industrial heritage, in a volatile global economy, on a warming planet. Stan’s Cafe has been devising exciting and thought-provoking theatre since 1991. Their work, which is always fresh and engaging, is in demand throughout the world.

“A Kaleidoscopic collage of impressionistic fragments which evoke the lives of generations touched by the manufacture and use of motor cars.” THE BIRMINGHAM POST “Stan’s Cafe is one of the UK’s most innovative and exciting theatre companies.” THE INDEPENDENT ON SUNDAY Dyma olwg newydd ar theatr ddogfennol. Yn cyfuno ymchwil a dyfalu, mae’r sioe yn datod edeifion straeon mil o bobl ac yn gofyn pwy yn union yw’r bobl hyn? Yn llawn hiwmor a gyda chanlyniad cythryblus, dangosir sut mae’n straeon personol yn plethu gyda’n hetifeddiaeth ddiwydiannol, mewn economi byd-eang, ar blaned sy’n cynhesu. Theatr gyffrous a phryfoclyd. Workshop Available - see page 47 for info

Nutcracker

Starring Helen Mirren

John Jones is an everyman. He has lived for millennia since the formation of coal through to the demise of the pits. His life is the story of the Welsh coalfields and their people.

An enchanting fairytale of an adaptation of a magical Nutcracker and a little girl called Clara. As the clock strikes 12, Clara’s wish is fulfilled as her Nutcracker comes to life and saves her from the biker mice. On defeating the Mouse King, Clara and her Prince visit the Kingdom of the Sweets.

By Jean Racine, in a version by Ted Hughes Screened live in High Definition from the National Theatre in London. Showing in the Arts Centre Cinema Run time: 2 hours Consumed by an uncontrollable passion for her young stepson and believing Theseus, her absent husband, to be dead, Phèdre confesses her darkest desires and enters the world of nightmare. When Theseus returns alive and well, Phèdre, fearing exposure, accuses her stepson of rape. The result is carnage. Helen Mirren takes the title role in this savage play by Jean Racine, translated into muscular free verse by the late Poet Laureate, Ted Hughes. Darllediad byw yn Sinema’r Ganolfan. Helen Mirren sy’n chwarae’r brif ran yn y ddrama ffyrnig hon gan Jean Racine, a gyfieithwyd i farddoniaeth rydd gan y diweddar Fardd Llawryfog, Ted Hughes.

By Guiseppe Verdi Starring Renée Fleming Run time 3 hours 12mins with 2 intervals Sung in Italian with Subtitles Screened live in High Definition from the Royal Opera House in London. Showing in the Arts Centre Cinema.

Everyone’s Wild About The Wilders! Renowned as the ‘hillbilly hurricane’, The Wilders in full, unstoppable flight have become Edinburgh Fringe favourites. Triumphant winners of a Herald Angel with a five-star review, The Scotsman said: ‘They generate the kind of tunes that should by rights leave vapour trails’. The Kansas City, Missouri, four-piece play storming roots-of-country and white hot old-time. They deliver a blistering fiddle/banjo/guitar/dobro/slap bass hoedown, led by singer/guitarist and wisecracker, Ike Sheldon, resurrecting 1940's and 50's honky-tonk heroes like Hank Williams and Lefty Frizzell. Their standing-room-only appearance at Glasgow’s Celtic Connections was a highlight of the BBC 2 TV coverage and this visit includes main stage appearances at the Hebridean Celtic Festival in Stornoway.

Cyfle i glywed a gweld y ddrama adnabyddus yma ar ffurf na welwyd erioed o’r blaen sef wedi ei osod i Gerdd Dant gan Bethan Bryn. Mae’r dull o ganu sy’n unigryw i Gymru yn cydweddu yn berffaith i stori a sefyllfa hollol Gymreig trigolion y Wenallt. Mae’r cynhyrchiad yn rhan o ddathlu penblwydd y gymdeithas Gerdd Dant yn 75 oed a Chwmni Theatr Arad Goch yn 20. Mi fydd hi’n noson i’w chofio yng nghwmni unigolion adnabyddus sy’n perfformio’r brif rannau a chôr sydd wedi ffurfio yn arbennig ar gyfer yr achlysur, trwy gyfuno tri parti llwyddiannus sef Chwiban o’r gogledd, Greal o’r canolbarth a’r Gromlech o’r de. Arbrawf gyffrous sydd yn cyfuno dulliau cyfoes gyda’r hen grefft hynafol. ‘Under Milk Wood’ by Dylan Thomas (tr. T. James Jones). The chance to see and hear a uniquely Welsh project, combining the story of Llaregyb with the tradition of singing Cerdd Dant. This production is part of the Cerdd Dant society’s 75th Birthday and Arad Goch’s 20th birthday Celebrations.

La Traviata, Verdi’s best-loved work, is performed here by a star cast in a revival of Richard Eyre’s highly acclaimed 1994 production. Music Director Antonio Pappano, now in his seventh Season with The Royal Opera, conducts La Traviata for the first time at Covent Garden. American soprano Renée Fleming returns to Covent Garden to sing Violetta for the first time with The Royal Opera. KING &I Music by Richard Rodgers Book & Lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II Based on the novel entitled ‘Anna and the King of Siam’ by Margaret Landon Director and Choreographer Anthony Williams

Rodgers & Hammerstein's timeless classic The King and I captured the hearts and minds of millions with its charming story of the British governess brought into the court of Siam to tutor the King's many children. Once within the splendour of the Royal Palace, Anna and the King grow to understand one another and learn about each other's cultures. The lavish film in 1955 starring Yul Brynner and Deborah Kerr as the governess was the most expensive film ever mounted by 20th Century Fox and brought the wonderful music to an international audience. Famous numbers include ‘Shall We Dance’, ‘I Whistle a Happy Tune’. ‘Hello Young Lovers’, ‘Getting to Know You’. Now the winning team of Aberystwyth Arts Centre, Michael Bogdanov, Anthony Williams and Michael Morwood bring this wonderful musical back to the stage for what promises to be the perfect summer season production. Bu’r sioe glasurol The Kind and I yn apelio at filiynau, gyda’i stori hyfryd am yr athrawes Brydeinig a aeth i’r llys yn Siam i ddysgu plant niferus y Brenin. Wrth iddi ymgartrefu yn y Palas, mae Anna a’r Brenin yn dechrau deall ei gilydd ac yn ymhyfrydu mewn dysgu am ddiwylliant y naill a’r llall. Bu’r ffilm ysblennydd a wnaethpwyd ym 1955 gyda Yul Brynner a Deborah Kerr yn chwarae’r prif rannau yn un o’r ffilmiau mwyaf drud i gael ei chynhyrchu erioed a bu’n gyfrifol am gyflwyno cerddoriaeth wych y sioe i gynulleidfa ryngwladol. Ymysg y caneuon enwocaf yw ‘Shall We Dance’, ‘I Whistle a Happy Tune’. ‘Hello Young Lovers’ a ‘Getting to Know You’. Daw’r sioe gerdd hyfryd hon yn ôl i’r llwyfan yn y Ganolfan yr haf hwn. Ymunwch â ni ar gyfer y sioe haf berffaith!

Celebrating Stéphane Grappelli

Sixty of Wales’ most talented young people will come together once again in 2009 as the National Youth Theatre of Wales embarks upon another epic, bilingual production of the very highest standards.

Dutchman Tim Kliphuis ranks among the world's finest fiddlers. He has often been dubbed the successor of Stéphane Grappelli, but takes his legacy further by mixing Gypsy Swing, Celtic Folk and Classical music. Take Stéphane Grappelli’s Hot Gypsy Swing, add Welsh Celtic traditionals (Myfanwy, Daffyd y Garreg Wen), the odd Stevie Wonder hit and Classical themes of Bach, Grieg and List and you have a “swingy, zingy mix” (Glasgow Herald) that’s totally new but appeals to everyone.

Performing Arts / Visual Arts Aberystwyth Arts Centre co-ordinates the largest community arts and education programme of any Arts Centre in Wales. Last year we welcomed over 100,000 participants to the many classes, workshops and special events in our programme. Over the summer we offer a range of special courses in addition to our regular weekly classes, and full details are included in this section of the brochure. Please note - course numbers are limited so be sure to book in advance through the box office on 01970 623232 or online at www.aber.ac.uk/artscentre . Many of our summer term classes will already have started - but it may be possible to join some classes part way through a term so please phone to check. All courses run subject to sufficient numbers enrolling. Our Education and Community work is supported by the Arts Council Of Wales

Symphony No.1

Castway continue their 18th birthday celebrations with one of Shakespeare's most witty and flamboyant comedies. Lovingly directed by David Blumfield, this accessible revival is carefully crafted to be relevant to a contemporary audience. Amidst the intimacy of the round studio Castaway combine a delicious mix of inventive theatricality, costume, music and the Bard's beautiful poetry to recreate "Navarre" in this comic study of love... with a twist at the end.

Conductor Owain Arwel Hughes The National Youth Orchestra of Wales returns to Aberystwyth this summer with a programme of magnificent music: Mahler’s epic Symphony No. 1, music from Tchaikovsky’s much-loved Swan Lake Ballet Suite and Arwel Hughes’ Prelude for Orchestra - a piece aptly dedicated to the Youth of Wales. Concert-goers cannot fail to be impressed by some of Wales’ most gifted young musicians, who demonstrate a maturity and confidence well beyond their years. Mae Cerddorfa Ieuenctid Genedlaehol Cymru yn dychwelyd i Aberystwyth yr haf hwn gyda rhaglen o gerddoriaeth wych. Dyma rai o gerddorion ifanc mwyaf talentog Cymru sy’n dangos aeddfedrwydd ac hyder y tu hwnt i’w hoedran.

36

Mae cwmni Castaway yn parhau i ddathlu ei benblwydd yn 18 oed gydag un o gomediau mwyaf ffraeth Shakespeare. Mae’r addasiad hwn yn berthnasol i’r gynulleidfa gyfoes ac mae’r cynhyrchiad yn un arbennig o effeithiol, wedi’i llwyfannu yn amgylchedd agos atoch y stiwdio gron.

Following the massive success of last year's Magnificent Myths of the Mabinogi, the same creative team will collaborate on the production of a brand new commission, once again written especially for NYTW by Manon Eames and directed by award-winning director, Tim Baker. This year’s production promises something very different but equally exciting, dramatic, thought-provoking and imaginative. With its trademark combinations of text, music, movement and voices, NYTW 2009 will undoubtedly be very special - and is not to be missed!
