Manresa Jesuit Retreat House Board of Directors Congratulates Manresa’s 2012 Leadership Award Recipients
Mr. Dave E. Nona Leadership
Fr. Bernie Owens, SJ Lifetime Achievement
Thank you and God bless
Welcome to our Inaugural Leadership Banquet instituted to honor those who have played a
significant role in the life and evolution of Manresa Jesuit Retreat House. Formerly, we presented our annual leadership award at our annual auction dinner, but this year we felt it was important to set aside an evening all its own so that we may focus more on those who are playing such an important role in helping Manresa into the future. We are grateful for your support and the continued encouragement we receive for the ministry that we share at Manresa. We hope that you will enjoy a very pleasant evening here at the Detroit Institute of Arts which has welcomed us to hold our celebration in its elegant surroundings. Tonight we celebrate and honor two individuals who have made a significant contribution to the life and ministry of Manresa. As has been stated so often before, Manresa Jesuit Retreat House is not so much a place but a community—a community of individuals who have gathered together in order to deepen their faith and grow closer to the Lord, especially through an experience of the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius. Having been touched by the Lord, the community is encouraged to share the graces they receive with others, whether in their families or professions, or through service in the local community. Manresa offers many opportunities for spiritual growth—liturgical celebration, various styles of retreats, seminars and workshops, days of reflection, and groups devoted to faith-sharing, meditation, Christian yoga, and groups exploring more closely the relationship between our faith and our lives in the world. The two individuals we honor today have served to expand and extend the ministry of Manresa in noteworthy ways. The first honoree is Fr. Bernard Owens, SJ, who has served at Manresa for nearly twenty years as part of the ministerial staff. He has offered many retreats, workshops, and seminars over the course of those years, but we honor him especially for his work in sharing the spirituality of St. Ignatius with numbers of lay people and religious, training them to serve in a variety of ministries including spiritual direction, retreat work, and listening ministries. In this he has carried out the mission entrusted to us by the recent General Congregations of the Society of Jesus to pass on the spirituality of our founder to those people who wish to work beside Jesuits as collaborators in sharing the Spiritual Exercises and supporting others through various other ministries. Manresa is therefore honoring Fr. Bernie with its first Lifetime Achievement Award for the excellent work he has done in expanding the mission of Manresa and extending its reach through the more than two hundred graduates of the internship program who are sharing the gift of Ignatian spirituality far beyond the grounds of Manresa. We also honor a very dear friend of Manresa who has generously served the community in many ways over many years. Mr. Dave Nona was educated by the Jesuits in Baghdad, Iraq before coming to the United States to continue his education in the field of engineering. David has been a strong supporter of Jesuit ministries throughout Metropolitan Detroit, but especially Manresa Jesuit Retreat House. He has supported the ministry of Manresa through his role as a member of the Board of Directors, by his generosity, and through the valuable wisdom he has offered to the house at critical moments of its history. We are particularly grateful to him for his efforts to introduce Manresa to members of the Chaldean community and helping to expand our ministry to reach a new generation of retreatants. This year we are presenting him with our annual Leadership Award in recognition of his participation in the evolution of our ministry, and its expansion to include new communities within our region. We are grateful to have him as partner in mission and look forward to continue working together with him in our shared ministry of service to all the people of Detroit. I thank you again for your support of this event. The proceeds are earmarked for the McGrail Fund which was established to insure Manresa’s future financial viability.

e offer the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius Loyola and various adaptations of these Exercises in conference retreats and individually directed retreats, the Spiritual Exercises in Daily Life, days of prayer and recollection, different forms of individual prayer, and the celebration of the liturgy and of devotional practices. Members of our staff are available for spiritual direction or to recommend spiritual directors. We provide a variety of workshops, one-day and semester-long, as well as other learning experiences to respond to the spiritual needs of the individual and those engaged in pastoral ministry.
