The Master’s Garden: Gardening in Harmony with Nature

Welcome To Manresa Manresa Jesuit Retreat House is a place of quiet, peace and prayer that seeks to help people grow in their spiritual life by offering retreats and other spiritual programs. It is a place to get away from everyday stress, problems and humdrum to commune with Nature and seek God.

What Is A Retreat And Why Make One? A retreat is a time of quiet when you can get away from the ordinary demands of life, a time to get a better perspective on the deeper meaning of your life, a time to come into closer contact with God, a time of reconciliation and peace. It is a time to be good to yourself.

Who is Welcome? We are Jesuit and Catholic but anyone is welcome regardless of religious affiliation or ability to pay. Generally, any man may take part in any men’s retreat and any woman in a women’s retreat whether or not part of the particular group scheduled for that weekend. (See page 20 for the schedule.) Who is welcome? You are.

What to Expect at a Retreat Retreats at Manresa typically begin on Friday with dinner and end around noon on Sunday. During that time a director will offer several talks based, in general, on the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius of Loyola, the founder of the Jesuits. The benefit from the retreat comes not from what the director says, but from the retreatants’ reflection on those elements of the presentation that resonates in thier hearts. Time is set aside for personal reflection and prayer to determine how those insights apply in their own lives. Silence is maintained throughout the weekend so nothing will distract the retreatants from listening to God and their own hearts.

Thanks for Joining Us! It’s a great pleasure for me to welcome all of you to the Manresa Jesuit Retreat House for our first garden event entitled, The Master’s Garden: Gardening in Harmony with Nature. Today, we celebrate the beauty of the natural world, and the role we play in nurturing and protecting that beauty. The great religions of our world all recognize the spiritual dimension of Nature in its capacity to connect us with the transcendent, and remind us of the interconnectedness of all living things in Creation. We recognize that the beauty we find in Nature has the power not only to raise our spirits, but even to heal us. We recognize also in our efforts to nurture that beauty, we become co-creators with the Lord of creation and caretakers of the beautiful gift we have received. I hope that you will enjoy the day and find opportunities for reflection and meditation, as well as practical guidance and suggestions for ways in which you can better look after the treasure you have been given, cultivating the beauty that can be found in your own garden. I would like to thank all those who have cooperated in making this day possible, and hope you take advantage of all that is offered. Please feel free to walk around the grounds and visit the retreat house itself. We hope that you, too, will discover why so many people treasure Manresa and will return to us when you wish to cultivate your own spiritual life. Fr. Gregory Hyde, SJ Executive Director

P.S. Don’t forget to buy your raffle tickets!

OUR SPEAKERS Janet Macunovich, author, educator and garden designer known for plans that are simple, enduring, creative and individually pleasing. Today she discusses Earthwise Gardening; how to prepare your garden and maintain soil condition so the garden grows well for many years. A variety of methods for soil preparation will be discussed, including double digging “virgin soils,” working under trees, and enlisting Mother Nature’s help in correcting problem soils. Rick Vespa, host of WXYZ TV 7’s “Home Gardener.” will share his years of experience as gardener as well as with English Gardens. Putting the right plant in the right location is just as important as using the right product in the right place, in the proper amount. Achieving the right balance is key to success in the garden.

Dr. Michael Stafford, Director of the Cranbrook Institute of Science and a passionate beekeeper, will discuss the current thinking and research related to understanding the causes of and solutions to the potentially devastating phenomenon known as Colony Collapse Disorder. The sudden collapse of domestic honeybee colonies in North America has us wondering “Where have all the honey bees gone?”

Cyndi Ross is the River Restoration Program Manager for Friends of the Rouge. She has been coordinating public education events and restoration projects for the non-profit organization since 2001. Cyndi specializes in native plant gardening and rain gardens. She will discuss the importance and advantages of using native species and will share the story of the creation of Manresa’s own riverside garden. Rev. Bernie Owens, SJ has been part of Manresa for 19 years, director of the two-year internship in Ignatian Spirituality, leader of seminars in Christian spiritual classics, and an avid gardener. Today he asks, “What is it that unites us all and everything around us?” He will reflect on this Source and its implications for a way of living that more and more we are having to embrace . . . if we are to survive.

Down by the River Lisa Appel, Botanist and Coordinator of Watershed Education for the Cranbrook Institute of Science, focusing on Great Lakes environmental education programs will be denonstrating Life in the Stream: What are benthic macroinvertebrates and how do they measure water quality? SOCWA Volunteers will be doing table-top demonstrations on composting and environmental lawn care from noon until 2 PM.

In the Gazebo

Jill Jack’s magical connection to her audience is the result of her generous artistry. By combining her gifts as a conceptual visionary with a warm gathering of musical influences, Jill touches that secret heart of ours with her melodies and lyrics. She will be entertaining in the Gazebo at 1:00 PM.

Liven Up Your Meals With Herbs Fresh from The Garden By Jennifer Youngquest Marketing Manager at English Gardens

Add a little spice to summer meals with herbs fresh from your garden. They’re easy to grow in the garden or in containers. Containers are great because they can be positioned near the cooking areas for easy access. Start by selecting a container with proper drainage. Fill with a container potting mix. When planting in the ground, select an area that receives at least 6 to 8 hours of sun each day. The soil should be rich and loamy, and well drained. Amend appropriately with compost, peat moss or manure, just like any other garden bed. Incorporate a slow-release fertilizer, like Osmocote, into the soil to give plants a good start. Then choose your herbs. English Gardens carries nearly 100 different varieties delightful for their fragrance, foliage texture and robust flavor. Some of the most popular include basil, parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme. Select those you’ll use most in cooking. • Basil: use for pesto, salads, eggs, fish, poultry and sauces • Chives: salads, eggs, potatoes, gravies, soup • Mint: garnishes, salads • Oregano: Italian dishes, spaghetti sauce, pizza • Parsley: salads, soups, eggs, garnish • Sage: meat stuffing, lamb, sausage • Rosemary: chicken, lamb, stews, vegetables • Thyme: poultry, stuffing, fish, soup After the herbs are planted, they’ll need regular care throughout the summer. Water is important. Herbs planted in containers will need more water than those planted in the ground. Water when the soil is dry to the touch about an inch down. Fleshier leaves, like parsley and basil, will need to be watered more often than plants like rosemary. Fertilize every two weeks with a water-soluble fertilizer. Remember to snip and use the leaves, so they don’t get too leggy and overgrown. Grow those you cook with most often and leggy, overgrown plants won’t be a problem. It’s fun to experiment with a new variety to introduce to your cuisine.

Roasted Cauliflower with Fresh Herbs and Parmesan Use parmesan and any fresh herbs you have on hand for this roasted cauliflower dish. While parsley, tarragon, and thyme make a nice combination, you can also try sage, chives, and rosemary for this recipe suggested by Rhonda Brown, Manresa’s Master Chef from Ovations.

Ingredients 6 cups cauliflower florets 1 1/2 tablespoons olive oil 1 tablespoon chopped fresh parsley 2 teaspoons chopped fresh thyme 2 teaspoons chopped fresh tarragon 3 garlic cloves, minced 1/4 cup grated fresh Parmesan 2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/4 teaspoon pepper Preparation Preheat oven to 450°. Place cauliflower in a large roasting pan or jelly-roll pan. Drizzle with oil; toss well to coat. Bake at 450° for 20 minutes or until tender and browned, stirring every 5 minutes. Sprinkle with parsley, thyme, tarragon, and garlic. Bake 5 minutes. Combine cauliflower mixture, cheese, and remaining ingredients in a large bowl; toss well to combine. Let Us Be Protectors Of Creation The vocation of being protector is not just something involving us Christians alone: it … is simply human, involving everyone. It means protecting all creation, the beauty of the created world, as the Book of Genesis tells us and as Saint Francis of Assisi showed us. It means respecting each of God’s creatures and respecting the environment in which we live …In the end, everything has been entrusted to our protection and all of us are responsible for it. Be protectors of God’s gifts!” Pope Francis
