Good Friday & Easter Services at Greater Zion Church Family
PASTOR DR. MICHAEL FISHER HOST PASTOR
GOOD FRIDAY Good Friday is the opening to what should be the most powerful weekend of the Christian believer. It is the Friday that Jesus Christ was whipped for our transgressions, bruised for our iniquities, died for our sins and descended into hell to set the captives free. The Greater Zion Church Family – under the pastoral leadership of Reverend Dr. Michael J. Fisher – has several services planned to celebrate the victory over death, the grave and the enemy’s malicious schemes. It is during Good Friday that the Lamb of God becomes the perfect sacrifice for us. At 12 Noon on Good Friday the
Greater Zion Church Family will host the traditional “7 Last Sayings of Jesus Christ on the Cross” with Min. Antonio Alexander, Rev. Cortnee Morrow, Rev. Alvin Gilbert, Rev. Marquise Brown, Rev. Freddie Gordon, and Rev. Darby. This service reminds the people of God of the ultimate testament of Jesus Christ’s ministry. It is on the cross that we see Christ’s humanity and divinity; that we understand His provision and the completion of His earthly ministry; and where we receive Christ’s salvation, power and victory. At 7p.m. on Good Friday, the Greater Zion Church Family will give a pioneering presentation of Calvary: The Vantage Points of Calvary. We have heard the story of Calvary from Christ’s perspective through His “7 Last Sayings”, but this evening service will be an opportunity to hear about Calvary from those that were there. During this service, hear the Greater Zion ministerial staff give Peter, Mary, Mary Magdalene, the thieves, the Roman Centurion soldier and John’s account of the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. Each
of them were, individually, impacted by His ministry and His stay on earth. Listen to hear how seeing their Christ, the Savior dying. EASTER SUNDAY I want to know Christ and the power of His resurrection and the fellowship of sharing in His sufferings, becoming like Him in his death, and so, somehow, to attain to the resurrection from the dead. (Philippians 3:10) The service times for the Easter Sunday services are as follows: 7a.m., 9a.m., 11a.m. and 5p.m. We recommend early arrival to all services to guarantee a seat. We expect God’s presence to reside with us during each service, providing supernatural access to His grace, mercy and healing. We would like to include a special emphasis on the evening service. It is during our 5p.m. service that our K.R.A.Z.Y. Krew Children’s Ministry and Kingdom X/2408 Youth Ministry will display their appreciation for the death and resurrection of the Risen Savior. Additionally, the Ministerial Staff will present the 3rd Annual “Artifacts of Calvary.” This is another presentation of Calvary
that relates the power and impact of the objects used during the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. The objects that will be used to the people of God during the evening service are as follows: the crown of thorns placed on His head, the whip used to beat Him, the vinegar given when He was thirsty, the hammer and nails that went through His hands and feet, the spear that went into His side, the cross that He was nailed to, and even the mountain called Calvary that He was crucified on. The Greater Zion Church Family is trusting God that knowing the power of Christ’s resurrection and sharing in His sufferings will forever change of the lives the people that join us for any and all of the above-mentioned services. Greater Zion Church Family is located at 2408 North Wilmington Avenue in the beautiful city of Compton. For more information regarding this revival or any of our other services, please contact our Church Office by calling (310) 639-5535 or visit our website at www.GreaterZionChurchFamily.com. PRAISES OF ZION MASS CHOIR PRESENTS “YOU’RE TOO SHORT TO BOX WITH GOD” Greetings to all the Saints of God! Dr. J. Benjamin Hardwick, the proud Senior Pastor of Praises of Zion M.B.C., on behalf of the Mass Choir, proudly extends an invitation to the entire church community to join us on Friday, April 22, 2011 at 7:00 p.m., and also on April 24, 2011 at 6:00 p.m., as we present adaptation of “Your Arms Are Too Short to Box With God”, written by Ms. Vinnette Carroll. Our production is entitled, “You’re Too Short To Box With God.” Truly all roads will lead to Praises of Zion, and there is a seat waiting just for you! We have tickets for limited preferred seating available. General admission is free. Please call the church office for tickets at (323) 750-1033. We are located at 8222 S. San Pedro Street, in Los Angeles. Please conduct the church office at (323) 750-1033 if further information is desired. What? You say you have already seen it before? Good, then you know what a wonderful message the play delivers. It really does not matter because the story is the same. Nothing added, and nothing taken away. But there are yet many who have not heard the Easter message of redemption and hope. Our message is: “He is not here…On that first Easter morning the disciples came to the tomb of Jesus and found it empty. They came expecting to find a body and instead they found emptiness.. The empty tomb is a compelling image. The angel at the empty tomb explains that the risen Jesus has gone ahead of the disciples and would meet them in Galilee. Put another way, what is being said is that Jesus who died in the past has been raised in the present, and he goes ahead of the disciples to Galilee where he will meet them in the
future. Past, present and future find their focus in Jesus. Consider this fact: Jesus is still ahead of us. We are not stuck with whatever our past may have been. We are not mired in the problems of our present. Jesus has gone ahead of us and will meet us in our future…“He has risen like He said He would.” And more than that, that same Christ is available to all people. Believe it or not, this is a perfect beginning or ending to the celebration of Easter for men, women, children (of all ages), families and church groups. You will feel nothing but spiritual vibrations throughout the sanctuary as the Mass Choir of “Praise City”, under the direction of Sister Harriesha Neal, and our musical director is none other than the anointed Rev. Calvin Rhone, along with many special guests who will breath life into the characters before your very eyes. You will meet Jesus, Mary, the high priests, the elders, Judas, King Herod, and Pontius Pilate! You will see the miracles that Jesus performed, and experience the agony of Christ during the Crucifixion, and the hope and glory of the Resurrection. So plan on joining us for a joyous, foot-stomping, hand-clapping, and fan waving celebration of Gospel music primarily based on the Gospel of St. Matthew, which tells the story of Christ, and traces the scriptural events from the day Jesus Christ arrives in Jerusalem on Palm Sunday, to the morning of the Resurrection. So until that appointed time, no matter what situations you might find yourself in, remember, “You’re Too Short To Box With God!” God bless, and we expect to see you there. To God be the glory! Dr. J. Benjamin Hardwick, Senior Pastor, Sister Veal Neal, Choir President, and Sister Clarice Holmes, Reporter.

Spring Has Sprung at Greater New Light A flurry of activities at Greater New Light Baptist Church is creating an almost palpable level of enthusiastic anticipation among its members. All who wish to join in with us, or just observe, can find us at 1154 East 92nd Street in Los Angeles. At the time of this writing, the brethren of our church are in the process of preparing their menu for the delicious breakfast that is prepared annually to serve to all in attendance, immediately following the Resurrection Day Sunrise Service. Traditionally, this service provides a wonderfully reverent way of beginning the Resurrection Sunday worship experience. The members of GNL, along with the members of Faith Temple Church, will come together at 5:30 a.m., as the worship of the Lord goes forth, in honor of
the Christ, who conquered death, hell, and the grave. Dr. Mack N. Trimble, pastor of Faith Temple Church of God in Christ will minister the Word of God. Pastor Trimble always ministers under the anointing of the Holy Spirit. Everyone who makes this special service a part of their day will be blessed for having done so. On May 4, GNL will host the ‘kickoff’ service of the Los Angeles District Association’s Youth and Young Adult Revival. Reverend W. Edward Jenkins is the Moderator for LADA, and the Reverend Manual Scott, Jr., will be the revivalist for these services, which will continue through May 6 at other churches in our district. Women’s Day is always a very special day for all in attendance. This year, that service will be held on May 15. The celebration, however, will begin on Saturday,
May 14, when the women come together for a pre-Women’s Day luncheon. This wonderful day of food and fellowship sets the tone of togetherness and heightens anticipation for all participants. On Sunday morning the women will don various shades of ‘the color purple’ and come prepared for a great day in the Lord. The 11:00 a.m. service will be punctuated with a message that will be delivered by a powerfully anointed woman of God, Assistant Pastor Jeraldine W. Patterson of Crusade Christian Faith Center of Inglewood, CA. Spring is a time of re-awakening and the congregants of GNL are enjoying a fresh awakening in the worship of our Lord and Savior, Jesus the Christ. Rev. Dr. Patrick D. Ross, Senior Pastor and Sis. Dolores E. Grayson is the reporter.

ONE FAITH FELLOWSHIP’S NUGGETS FOR THE SOUL
IT’S TIME Most of us are familiar with making New Year Resolutions; a list of desired or needed changes that we “INTEND TO BRING ABOUT” in our lives. However, because many times we fail to create those changes; we resolve throughout the year to recommit and attempt to fulfill and bring forth those promises. Albert Einstein reminds us “Insanity: is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.” Nor, can we ignore the periods of desiring success and wishing that it would miraculously happen without any effort on our part. God works miracles in our lives when we have done what we can but can’t achieve success in and of ourselves. God does not allow us to lazily sit back, fold our arms, cross our legs and expect Him to serve us when we have the ability to be involved but idly we choose not to be. Everyone has areas of change that need to oc-
cur in their lives, whether they are physical, spiritual, relational, financial, personal, educational, professional, etc. Therefore “It’s Time” out for wishing, crying, praying and singing the blues to bring about needed changes! “It’s Time” to step up and do what we should do to bring forth the God-ordained changes in our lives! “It’s Time” for us to do what we can which will equate to offering to God the sacrifice of action on our part, which will place in His hands something to work with to assist us in producing changes in our lives. “It’s Time” to make or review a list of changes desired and needed in our lives! “It’s Time” to establish some “New Habits” for our lives! “It’s Time” to get beyond the point of not accomplishing things in our lives which is keeping us in bondage and stagnant. “It’s Time” to begin doing those things which will make us feel

good about ourselves, boost our self-esteem, accomplish needed tasks and will positively influence others around us by our actions! Yes, we can accomplish success in those areas of defeat in our lives as others who have overcome obstacles in their lives! Confucius said “Men’s natures are alike; it is their habits that separate them.” Aristotle said “We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence then, is not an act, but
a habit.” John Dryden informs us “We first make our habits, and then our habits make us.” So how do we create new habits for our lives? First by praying, to see what God would sanction to happen in our lives! Proverbs 3:5Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. v. 6-In all thy ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct thy paths. V.7- Be not wise in thine own eyes: fear the LORD, and depart from evil. Then with a listening ear tuned in to the instructive Spirit of God, list realistic and desired changes along with a game plan of commitment and execution! Don’t attempt to accomplish everything on the list at one time, because we CAN’T. But rather, target one or two items at a time, and implement whatever works for your makeup and ability to do for three to four weeks to establish the habit. Remember, it took time
FOOD FOR THOUGHT
Easter Sunday morning, “He got up with all power in His hands.” Thank you Jesus! Christ came to earth committed to a purpose, and sacrificed His life for you and I. Christ knew what He would face, Christ knew the pain, the suffering, He knew He would be loved and appreciated and He knew He would be hated, mocked and betrayed. He knew He would be born to die. Yet in spite of knowing the hardships to come, He completed His task anyway. Christ could do these
things because He knew the intended outcome, which was securing eternal salvation for you and for me. Christ is our shining example to follow in accomplishing spiritual leadership. Christ kept His focus and completed His course. Keep your focus, complete your course, scripture says, “the race is not given to the swift, but to the one who endures to the end.” Keep your focus, complete your course, knowing, “that all things work for the good of those that love the Lord, and are called according to His purpose.” Keep your focus, complete your course, knowing, “that if you delight yourself in Him, He will give you the desires of your heart.” God’s word is filled with promises to the believer, but for every promise, there is a principle that is attached. In other words He is saying, if you do this, then I will do this. We know that God is not a man that He

to form the “undesired habit” and it will take time to establish the “desired habit”, but it is achievable one day at a time. We should share with trusted persons, our commitment and goals to be accomplished over the next three to four weeks. These persons should be ones who will lovingly and firmly hold us accountable and be willing to encourage us when we are not as successful on “those” days. We should journal our progress and experiences daily in reaching our goals. We must encourage and applaud our successes as we also firmly reprimand ourselves for our “chosen” defeats. However, we must also forgive ourselves and start again moving toward accomplishing our goals. After accomplishing the first one or two goals, move on down the list to the next one or two goals. Then we will be on the path of accomplishing those “needed changes” in our lives! For
should lie! He will not go back on His promises. Our Father is sure and dependable and because of this we can face our obstacles, we can love without reservation. What is your intended outcome for what you are doing as a spiritual leader? I hope that it is to move people onto God’s agenda and in doing so demonstrate the love of God through Jesus Christ to a dying world. Don’t lose heart, keep your focus and complete your course. Dr. Joyce is a layperson under the leadership of Dr. Ticey Brown at the Mt. Tabor Missionary Baptist Church; where she serves as the Strategic Leadership Director. Dr. Joyce’s mission is to develop servantleaders and enhance ministries within the Church; Dr. Joyce is available for one-on-one consultations, small group training sessions and workshops. Oh that was a great miracle but God didn’t stop there This miracle child proved lighter than air Fishermen were amazed as they witnessed his stroll He walked raging water as if a dirt road Email: richardojones1 @verizon.net Or visit his website at: www. richardojoneslive. com
Yet still there were doubters and still there were haters The Pharisees, the Sadducees and other agitators But no one had seen a miraculous man of this sort And couldn’t believe their eyes when he called, “Lazarus come forth!”
The words of the doubters grew weaker and hollow As everywhere that Jesus went the crowds would follow The rulers could no longer make the people deny him So to kill their fear they cried, “Crucify him!” They tried to break him and cause him regret But when it came to miracles they had seen nothing yet Jesus said “Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.” They called him delusional and said his words were corrupt But three days later the first Easter morning Nobody can say that he didn’t give them warning Jesus rose from the grave as payment for our sins Then he miraculously went home but shall come back again

IN FOCUS Pastor Michael had heard some people in his church complaining about the new musicians who wanted to change the service to a more contemporary style. But he hadn’t realized how upset people had become until an after-church meeting got out of control. A discussion on music became more and more heated as people from the two factions argued with each other. “What are you people doing to our church’s music?” “We want to do something that’s more relevant to people today. Is that a problem?” “I’ve been playing the organ here for 25 years; you can’t just walk in and change it!” “If we want our church to grow, then we have to use music that’s with it. We can’t keep doing what we’ve always done.” “So then it has to be exactly what you want?” Horrified, Pastor Michael stood up and dismissed the meeting. Afterward, he escaped into his study, near tears. “Lord, what have I been doing wrong?” he prayed. “Why is there so much division in my own church? What have we all been missing?” Even among Christians, selfishness can lead to conflict and disunity. It’s easy to be blind to our own selfish attitudes. The alternative is to look away from ourselves to the sacrificial life of Jesus. THE PEOPLE, PLACES AND TIMES Philippi. Located in Macedonia near the Mediterranean Sea, Philippi was a prosperous center of commerce due to its placement on the Via Egnatia (a major trade route), its strategic location between Europe and Asia, and its nearby gold and silver mines. It was named for Philip II of Macedon, the father of Alexander the Great, who made significant improvements to the city in 462 B.C. In the second century B.C., Philippi became a Roman colony, with Roman soldiers and citizens placed there to establish Roman culture throughout the region. It is described in Acts as “the chief city of that part of Macedonia” (Acts 16:12). Paul. Apostle Paul’s spiritual biography is found in the book of Acts. After seeing a vision of Jesus, Paul was converted from an anti-Christian zealot to a Christian missionary. He is largely responsible for igniting the spread of the Gospel around the world, as well as for writing letters that make up much of our New Testament. On his third missionary journey, Paul was directed by the Holy Spirit to the city of Philippi, where he preached with Silas and was eventually thrown into prison. In spite of (or perhaps because of) this persecution, several converts established a healthy church in Philippi (see Acts 16). BACKGROUND Paul wrote to the Philippian church while he was chained in a prison cell for the crime of preaching the Gospel (Philippians 1:12- 14). The Philippian believers heard of his hardship and sent him a generous financial gift (4:15-18). Paul’s response is more than a simple acknowledgment of thanks; it is a delighted testimony to the joy he found in the Lord in the midst of his suffering. Paul commends the Philippian believers for their “partnership in the Gospel” (1:5), he and encourages them to stand firm in their faith in Jesus during their own hardships (1:27- 30). IN DEPTH 1. The Principles of a Sacrificed Life (Philippians 2:1-5) Like Paul, the Christians at Philippi faced opposition, harassment, imprisonment, and even death for simply believing in Jesus. This intense stress on a group of people might cause personal conflicts and division. Paul appeals to the believers’ experience of Jesus: encouragement in Christ, the consolation of love, the fellowship of the spirit, affection, and compassion (Philippians 2:1, NASB). These four things that we have in Christ, Paul indicates, should lead to positive results in the way we treat others: “Being of the same mind, maintaining the same love, united in spirit, intent on one purpose” (v. 2, NASB). The implication is clear: the way Christ loves you should be the way you love others. The exhortation toward like-mindedness and “being of one accord” (v. 2) is not a demand for conformity. Rather, it demonstrates what will happen when different people are transformed by the same Christ. True unity comes not from external pressure but from inward spiritual agreement. We find this agreement when we look to Jesus Christ (v. 5). The “one mind” or purpose we are called to share is to love each other with the same kind of love that Jesus has. In verse 4, Paul offers parallel sentences of advice: don’t be selfish or conceited, but be humble and regard others as more important than yourself. Don’t just look out for your own interests, but also for the interests of others. Paul does not ask us to make our own effort to imitate the example of Christ. That would be a worthy goal but impossible to achieve. Rather, as Jesus spiritually indwells us, the same mind or attitude that is in Him will come to be in us. This attitude enables us to live sacrificially as Jesus did. 2. The Example of a Sacrificed Life (vv. 6-8) Reflecting on the sacrificial attitude of Jesus, Paul recounts Jesus’ life in a beautiful lyric poem. Because of the unique poetic structure and vocabulary of this passage (beginning in verse 6), many scholars believe that Paul was likely quoting an early Christian hymn or statement of faith, possibly one that the Philippian church used in their worship as well. (The

Roman official, Pliny the Younger, observed in the second century that at a meeting of Christians, the worshipers “sang a hymn to Christ as to a god.”) This “Christ Hymn” testifies to the great sacrifice Jesus made out of His own humility. As the hymn begins, it states that Jesus existed “in the form of God”—that is, everything God was, Jesus was. Scripture directly identifies Jesus with all the attributes of God: He is described as the Creator (Colossians 1:16), the Almighty (Philippians 3:20-21), the Judge (2 Corinthians 5:10), and the Eternal One (Colossians 1:17), among many other titles and actions that clearly belong to God alone. Jesus Himself is recorded as claiming eternal pre-existence (John 8:58), omnipresence (Matthew 18:20), the ability to forgive sins against God (Mark 2:7-10), and even the equal right to receive honor with God the Father (John 5:23). Jesus’ total equality with God, however, was not something He held onto selfishly. Rather, He willingly “emptied Himself” (Gk. kenosis, Philippians 2:7). There is some debate among theologians about what exactly Jesus put aside from Himself, but the process was clearly one of great humility and selflessness. Neglecting the form of God and equality with God, Jesus took the form of a servant and the likeness of a human. He went from infinite power and glory to a low place in a humble society of oppressed and weak people. As though that was not enough humility, Jesus went even further. He was totally obedient to the will of His Father even when it resulted in rejection, persecution, and ultimately death—an execution by torture reserved for murderers and rebels. By His death, Jesus was able to take the penalty of our sins and bring about the redemption of all who trust in Him. Jesus could have remained in heaven with all the glory, peace, and power that came from equality with God. But He willingly chose to sacrifice all this to live a limited, oppressed human life on earth, and then even to sacrifice His earthly life, simply out of obedience to the Father and His love for humanity (John 3:16-17; Romans 5:8). What marvelous humility and love! 3. The Reward of a Sacrificed Life (vv. 9-11) Jesus’ death was not a defeat but a victory. Because of Jesus’ sacrificial life and love, God raised Him from the dead and exalted Him to the highest place of honor in the universe (v. 9). The exalted name of Jesus will inspire every knee to bow and every tongue to say that Jesus Christ is Lord. Everything Jesus put aside He received back and more. God says through the prophet Isaiah that every knee will bow and every tongue will swear to God alone (Isaiah 45:23). So to say this of Jesus is to say that Jesus is fully and completely equal with God. Jesus spoke of His death with the analogy of a grain of wheat: “I tell you the truth, unless a kernel of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains only a single seed. But if it dies, it produces many seeds. The man who loves his life will lose it, while the man who hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life. Whoever serves me must follow me; and where I am, my servant also will be. My Father will honor the one who serves me” (John 12:24-26, NIV). If a grain of wheat were to jealously hold onto its identity as a single seed, nothing would ever become of it. But by falling into the ground and becoming something other than a grain, it is able to grow up into a plant that produces many more seeds that can benefit many more people. In the same way, Jesus says, hanging on to your life as your own will cause you to miss its real purpose and the benefit you could have for others. If we are serious about following Jesus, we will be as willing to sacrifice our privileges and comforts as He was. MORE LIGHT ON TEXT Philippians 2:1-11 1 If there be therefore any consolation in Christ, if any comfort of love, if any fellowship of the Spirit, if any bowels and mercies, The Greek for “consolation” is paraklesis (par-AK-lay-sis), which means “comfort,” but it can also mean “exhortation.” Paul is pointing us to Christ as our example. Jesus exhorts us and consoles us through His example in His sufferings. We read in Hebrews 4:14-16 that Jesus went through the same trials, temptations, and sufferings that we experience, so He is able to help us, and He provides the example of how to face the difficulties in our lives. In addition to consolation in Christ, we have the comfort of the love of God, the Father. Third, we have fellowship together in the Spirit, the third Person of the Trinity. When we receive Jesus Christ as our Savior, we have a fellowship with one another through the Spirit that goes beyond even the bond of blood relatives. This causes the deep tenderness and care for each other that the words “bowels and mercies” express. “Bowels” is a translation from the Greek word splagchnon (SPLANGKHnon), which literally means the spleen or intestines, but figuratively means pity, sympathy, or tenderness. We think of love and tenderness as coming from the heart, but the Greeks thought of them as coming from the bowels or intestines. These emotions do not come from any organ of our body, so neither “heart” nor “bowels” is literal. In this verse, Paul is inviting the Philippians and all believers to base our conduct toward each other on our relationship with God and the example of Jesus Christ. 2 Fulfil ye my joy, that ye be likeminded, having the same love, being of one accord, of one mind. When Paul got to the last chapter of his letter to the Philippians (4:2-3), he mentioned Euodia and Syntyche, who were not getting along. These two women were great church workers but had come to some disagreement. This was in direct opposition to Paul’s great concern that Christians would work together in harmony. Unfortunately, Christians through the ages have fought each other, causing
churches to split, causing people to stop speaking to each other, and in general creating a bad witness to the world. This is the sort of thing that grieves the heart of a godly pastor; and so Paul, with his pastor’s heart, says that he will be full of joy when the Philippians are in one accord. In this verse, Paul is urging the Philippians (and us) to have the same disposition or attitude of mind. The Greek word for “mind” is phroneo (fron-EH-o), which conveys the idea of being mentally interested. “Likeminded” and “of one mind” from the end of this verse are translations of the same Greek word. In other words, we should be always thinking in a way that promotes unity of the Body. The phrase “the same love” points back to the comfort of God’s love mentioned in verse 1 of this chapter. We should be echoing God’s love toward us to one another. 3 Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves. “Strife” means antagonism or quarreling. “Vainglory” is unwarranted pride in oneself. These two words give us a picture of someone who is out to bring glory and honor to him- or herself, no matter how many toes he or she steps on. “Lowliness of mind” is just the opposite. In Greco-Roman society, just as today, humility was not seen as a virtue. The phrase “lowliness of mind” is the Greek word tapeinophrosune (tap-i-nofros-OO-nay). Witherington says it means “base-minded,” “shabby,” or “no account” (63). It meant to have the mentality of a slave. No wonder pagans of that day thought of Christianity as a slave religion. However, the Bible elevates humility (see Proverbs 3:34; 11:2; 15:33; Job 5:11). The Greek word for “esteem” is hegeomai (hayg-EH-om-ahee), and it implies authority over another. In the Greco-Roman society, where there were very distinct social classes, this was truly revolutionary. The Christian slave-owner was to think of his bornagain slave as having authority over him. In fact, the slave could be a church elder and the slave-owner would be under his spiritual authority. In the Roman Empire, where slaves out numbered slave-owners, some have thought that this revolutionary idea contributed to the downfall of the empire. Every Christian is to be submissive to every other Christian (Ephesians 5:21). We are to consider others better than ourselves and be their servants. 4 Look not every man on his own things, but every man also on the things of others. We naturally look out for ourselves first, but it is only through the Holy Spirit that we are able to look after our brothers and sisters’ needs and concerns. When the Bible speaks of humility, it is not the false modesty with which one replies to a compliment with “Oh, this old rag!” This just makes the one who compliments feel their judgment is being questioned. Nor is biblical modesty that which calls attention to oneself. When you are talking to the truly humble brother or sister, this person is so concerned about you that you hardly see them. 5 Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus: Now Paul directs us to the true example of humility—Jesus. Our mindset and thought patterns should be the same as His. We tend to think that if we can say the right words and do the right things, then we are all right, but this verse makes it clear that even our thoughts should be the same as our Lord’s. Not only our actions should be humble, but our inner attitudes as well. The Greek word for “mind” is the same as that used in verse 2. 6 Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God: Verses 6-11 are an early Christian hymn full of rich theology, especially concerning Christ. In this first verse of the hymn we see Jesus not striving to be God because He already is God. “Being” in the Greek is huparcho (hoop-AR-kho). Barclay writes, “It describes that which a man is in his very essence and which cannot be changed. It describes that part of a man which, in any circumstances, remains the same. So Paul begins by saying that Jesus was essentially and unalterably God” (35). In English we only have one word for “form,” but Greek has two. In this sentence, Paul uses morphe (mor-FAY), which figuratively means “shape,” but actually means “the same in nature.” If he had used the word schema (SKHAY-mah) instead, we would have had an entirely different meaning. Morphe is the unchanging essential nature. The schema (the actions, manner, bearing) of a thing may change, but the morphe does not. Jesus in His very essence is God. When you take something that belongs to you, it is not robbery. So when Jesus Christ accepted worship as God (John 5:18; 9:38; 10:30-33), when He claimed to be “I am” (John 8:58-59), and when
He forgave sins (Mark 2:5-11), which is something only God can do, He was acknowledging His deity. He accepts equality with God because He is God. 7 But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men: Jesus acknowledged that He was God, yet He came to earth as a man—born in a stable, stepson of a carpenter. He was the Creator of the universe, but He began His adulthood hammering boards together to support His mother, His stepbrothers, and His stepsisters after Joseph died. “Made himself of no reputation” means He literally “emptied” Himself (Gk. kenoo, ken-O-o). When Jesus came to earth and became a man, He did not become any less God in His essential being, but He emptied Himself of the independent expression of His deity. He accepted the human limitations of time, space, and knowledge. He could have drawn upon His powers as God, but instead He became dependent upon His Father and the Holy Spirit. He became dependent upon prayer, just as we humans are. But He remained in His essential being still fully God. To become a man was more degrading to Jesus than we could possibly imagine, but He also became one of the lowest of men. The Greek that the KJV translates as “servant” is actually a slave (doulos, DOO-los)! Again we see the word “form,” which refers to His essential being. He was not just play-acting as a man. He actually became a man. In these verses, we see the great truth of the incarnation. Jesus was fully God, remained fully God, and at the same time became fully human. He truly felt pain, hunger, tiredness, and all the other physical feelings that we as human beings feel and experience. But Jesus became a servant or a slave in a much deeper sense than membership in socio-economic class. Jesus came to earth to serve. Jesus tells us that the purpose of His coming was to serve and to give His life for us (Mark 10:45). He could have demanded to be treated as a king, but He came to serve us. 8 And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross. The Greek word translated “fashion” is schema, which implies that this was not the original nature of our Lord. Jesus became a man when He came to earth. To become a man was extremely humbling to our Lord, but He did this as part of the divine plan of salvation. Nothing could be more human than to die a human death. When we think about the Son of God, the Creator and Sustainer of the universe, dying, it truly boggles the mind. How could He die? No wonder the sky became
as dark as night in the middle of the day! No wonder the dead were seen walking about the streets of Jerusalem! But only by becoming a human being could Jesus die on the Cross and take the punishment for our sins. Only a human death could pay for our sins, so Jesus obeyed His Father and became a man. Yet only the Son of God could live a perfect, sinless life that was essential to His dying for us and not for Himself. The death He died was the most degrading. Jesus did not desire to exalt Himself. He renounced His glory for our sakes. The Jews knew that death on a cross was a curse, because we read in Deuteronomy 21:23 that anyone who is hanged on a tree is cursed of God. For the Romans, it was such an awful death that no Roman citizen could be hung on a cross; only a slave or the most awful criminal could be crucified. But in the most extreme act of humility, Jesus died on the Cross for us. 9 Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name: But the Cross is not the end of the story, nor is it the end of this beautiful hymn. The Philippian believers who received this letter, were suffering for our Lord, and it surely encouraged them to hear that the name they were being persecuted for would one day be exalted. Huperupsoo (hooper-oop-SO-o) is the Greek word for “exalted,” and it means to raise to the highest degree possible. Jesus humbled Himself as low as anyone could lower himself, but God the Father will raise Him higher than anyone has ever been raised or ever could be raised. What is the name that is above every name? The next verse seems to tell us that it is Jesus. In Matthew 1:21, the angel told Joseph to name the child Jesus, for He would save His people from their sins. Jesus comes from the Hebrew name Yhowshuwa (yeh-ho-SHOO-ah) or Yhowshua, and it means “the Lord (Yahweh) saves.” So this is the name that Jesus was given at His earthly birth (the beginning of His humiliation) and it tells us His purpose in coming—He came to save us. 10 That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; In our culture, a name is usually chosen just because a parent likes the sound, but in many cultures, the meaning of the name is most important and is thought to describe the essence of the person or represents the person. The Scripture says that everyone who calls upon the name of the Lord will be saved (Acts 2:21). But this is not just a

all honor as part of the almighty three-in-one God. Sad to say, this does not mean that everyone will be saved at this time. But those who did not receive Jesus as Lord and Savior while here on earth will realize what a mistake they have made, and at that time it will be too late to rectify it. Jesus died a cruel death on the Cross to make salvation possible for them, and they rejected Him. As we conclude this wonderful hymn, let us keep in mind that Christ is not only our God, but He is also our wonderful example of what it means to be truly humble. He served us, so we must serve one another.

superstitious type of name calling. Jesus warns that not everyone who says, “Lord, Lord,” will enter the kingdom of heaven, not even those who have done miracles in His name (Matthew 7:21-23). No, calling upon His name means receiving Jesus as one’s Savior from sin and Lord of one’s life. Bowing at the name of Jesus is more than a physical act; it is the heart attitude of worship and obedience to our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ for all that His name represents. Those who have decided to follow Jesus are already bowing before Him. 11 And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. The earliest Christians understood that “Lord” was how Jews referred to God (Yahweh) without daring to say His most holy name aloud. And Paul tells us that in calling Jesus “Lord,” God is glorified. God has called Jesus “God.” As Christians, we call Jesus our Lord and our God. Peter referred to Jesus as “our God and Savior Jesus Christ” (2 Peter 1:1, NIV). The word translated “confess” is exomologeo (ex-om-ol-og-EH-o), which means to acknowledge or to fully agree. This is not just saying the words. “Glory” is doxa (DOXah), which meanshonor, praise, and worship. So everyone will acknowledge that Jesus deserves

The First One
by Andrea Andrews History can be so very fascinating whether local, national or global. It’s wonderful to look back in time and discover who was “the first to…”. Apollo 11 was the first spaceflight to land on the moon on July 20, 1969. Victoria Claflin Woodhull was the first woman to run for President of the United States in 1872. Crispus Attucks on March 5, 1770, was the first person to be shot and killed in the American Revolutionary War by British redcoats during the Boston Massacre, in Boston, Massachusetts and Madame C.J Walker…the first millionaire of African descent in the United States of America. While the list of “firsts” is endless, I found that no one could/would answer the following post of Facebook: “Who was the first one to receive salvation in the New Testament?” We read the text all year round but pay very close attention to it during this season when we journey to the cross. No matter how many times we hear it, there is a “switch” that immediately defaults to “auto pilot” because we feel we know
scripture and there’s no need to revisit it. Unfortunately, pastors, ministers, lay leaders, teachers and others who carry the Gospel experience this frequently. So often the audience feels that they’ve heard or even read the scripture enough to know it. The fact is…the Word of GOD is living and therefore can not be fully, completely and unequivocally known. This is why the Word of GOD tells us to “Study to show thyself approved unto God, a workman who needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth” (2 Timothy 2:15). It does not affirm that one has STUDIED (past tense) but that it is in fact an ongoing practice – that one must STUDY always. Who was the first one to receive salvation in the New Testament? Luke 23:32-39 reveals there were two criminals (thieves) who were being crucified along side Jesus the Christ – one on each side. While we are well aware of this and have seen images over the ages, Luke reveals in chapter 23:40-43 that one criminal rebuked the other who taunted Jesus and was the first to surrender unto the sovereignty of the Messiah – believing who He was and receiving salvation before they both took their last breath saying unto Him… “Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.” Jesus answered him, “Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in paradise.” While the thief remains anonymous (his name never revealed in scripture), what an awesome privilege to be the first one to die having received Christ Jesus! Peace, Love & Blessings
