Pastor Earl A. Pleasant Retires

PASTOR EARL A. PLEASANT

Greetings to you in the name of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. The officers and members of Greater New Bethel Baptist Church wish to announce the retirement of our Pastor, the Reverend Earl A. Pleasant, scheduled for July 2011. Over 35 years ago, the Lord led our Pastor to establish the Greater New Bethel Baptist Church. He stepped out on faith and his courage grew. This was just the beginning of what God wanted to do through him. And as his courage grew, so did ours. God filled him with the knowledge of His will as he gently guided and encouraged us. He taught us to live above our circumstances, not under them. Through his teaching, we’ve learned to walk in God’s ways, even in times of great difficulty. Pastor Pleasant has developed an unshakeable faith in the Lord. He has triumphed over trials, tragedy and fears. When the trials of life pounded his spiritual armor from all sides, he stayed dressed for battle. He put on a suit of armor that the enemy could not penetrate. He has stood in the pulpit Sunday after Sunday proclaiming God’s Word throughout the nation, reaching the remote places of the world; touching lives and fulfilling God’s command to go ye therefore and teach all nations. To God Be the Glory for All the Things He Has Done. We cordially invite you to join us throughout the month of July, as we pay special homage to this great man of God. We will kick off the celebration on Sunday, July 3, 2011, with the Appreciation Service. The celebration will continue on July 10th and will conclude on July 17, 2011. On Thursday, July, 28, 2011, we will host a grand musical to be held at the Greater New Bethel Baptist Church, 601 East 99th Street, Inglewood, California, 90301. Many guest artists from across the nation and locally will perform at this grand event. And finally, on Friday, July 29, 2011, at 7:00 p.m., the celebration will climax with a banquet at the LAX Westin Hotel, located at 5400 West Century Boulevard, Los Angeles, California, You may contact Virginia Quarrels at (323) 751-3884 for ticket information. Musicians In Action Presents

FRIENDLYWILL M.B.C. 57th Church Anniversary Celebration pace for us to run. This pace was not too fast as to outrun others, nor was it too slow to fall behind, but as the Lord lead, we followed. Now after fifty-seven years, we are still under the direction of the Holy Spirit and “Still In The Race.” In February 1998, under the direction of the Holy Spirit, Rev. Chez J. Lister Sr. was called to serve as our Interim Pastor. The Friendlywill family waited patiently and prayerfully for the guidance of the Holy Sprit. On November 28, 1999 by divine providence, the eternal hand of God moved and anointed Rev. Chez J. Lister Sr. as overseer and pastor. As so vividly declared by the prophet, Jeremiah 3: 15 – “And I will give you pastors according to mine heart, which shall feed you with knowledge and understanding.” God has brought us a long way and for this reason we pause to

the Christ, who conquered death, hell, and the grave. Dr. Mack N. Trimble, pastor of Faith Temple Church of God in Christ will minister the Word of God. Pastor Trimble always ministers under the anointing of the Holy Spirit. Everyone who makes this special service a part of their day will be blessed for having done so. On May 4, GNL will host the ‘kickoff’ service of the Los Angeles District Association’s Youth and Young Adult Revival. Reverend W. Edward Jenkins is the Moderator for LADA, and the Reverend Manual Scott, Jr., will be the revivalist for these services, which will continue through May 6 at other churches in our district. Women’s Day is always a very special day for all in attendance. This year, that service will be held on May 15. The celebration, however, will begin on Saturday,

ONE FAITH FELLOWSHIP’S NUGGETS FOR THE SOUL

OH NO!! NOT NOW!!!! Oh No! Not Now! We can’t grow weary or give up NOW! Yes, it is true that some of the manifestations of prayers we have desired have not yet occurred! Situations are still the same and in some cases have become worse! Yes, we have been praying, believing in faith, encouraging ourselves, reading our Bibles, and rejoicing with others who have received what we desire and yet we are still waiting! For some requests we have waited so long that now we are asking “When Lord, When?” Are things ever going to change? Will there ever be a turnaround in our lives? While voicing those frustrations, WE CERTAINLY CAN’T OVERLOOK THE LIES from the “Pit of Hell” which our fierce DEMONIC enemies are constantly proclaiming in our ears! They keep saying: It “Won’t EVER HAPPEN, God DOESN’T Love You or Care about you!” But we must remem-

ber that Satan and his imps have been liars since the beginning of time. John 8:44-…He has always hated the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, it is consistent with his character; for he is a liar and the father of lies. (NLT) Therefore, it is important who and what we allow to feed our spirits, hearts and minds! We must consistently reflect on our opening statement: Oh No! Not Now! We can’t grow weary or give up NOW! This is especially true SINCE His FAITHFULNESS has been validated over and over again IN OUR LIVES! God has been good to us! He has not failed us yet and neither will He! As long as Jesus remained in Glory, doubters could question God’s love and faithfulness to us. BUT when Jesus actually left Glory and came to earth, God’s love and faithfulness was etched in stone for us! Even before one nail pierced his hands

DR. TONYA LEWIS

and feet, God’s love and commitment had been proven FOR us! Romans 8:32-He that spared not His own Son, but delivered Him up for us all, how shall He not with Him also freely give us all things?(NLT) All things means: each, every, any, all, the whole, everyone, everything, that is good for us. God may not have moved at the times that we desired; but He has always been the God of Love and Faithfulness

in our lives! He has acted in His appointed time and season! Since Daddy-God has already given us His ultimate gift, His Son Jesus, then how can we believe that He won’t give us the smaller necessities and gifts of life? Psalm 37:4- Delight thyself also in the LORD; and He shall give thee the desires of thine heart (NLT) Delight meaning that we should seek our happiness in God - in His Being, His friendship, His love! Desires--being what is lawful and right, really good. V. 5- Commit everything you do to the LORD. Trust him, and He will help you. V 7- Be still in the presence of the LORD, and wait patiently for him to act. Don’t worry about evil people who prosper or fret about their wicked schemes. V. 8- Stop being angry! Turn from your rage! Do not lose your temper— it only leads to harm. V. 9For the wicked will be destroyed, but those who trust in the LORD

will possess the land. (NLT) We must literally wait, “on Him” for He will do what we cannot do! He will not allow mockers to outshine who He is and “Whom” we have believed in! He will rise to the occasion to act on our behalf and to ONCE AGAIN ESTABLISH HIS FAITHFUL NAME IN THEIR AND OUR HEARTS! Because we seek to honor Him, it will govern the type of requests we desire! Because we seek to find our happiness and completeness in Him, will be why He grants our desires! Because we love, honor, respect, obey and embrace God as our Heavenly Father, we will NEVER be ashamed that we did! Joel 2:27And ye shall know that I [am] in the midst of Israel and [that] I [am] the LORD your God, and none else: and my people shall never be ashamed. Daddy-God WILL NEVER FORSAKE those who honor Him! Daddy–God

FOOD FOR THOUGHT

Let’s SHACK UP

The Leaders View of Sin and Sanctification

DR. JOYCE HARRELL

Our Father wants us to take on the mind of Christ, this renewing of the mind takes place through confession, praying and reading the Word of God. This act of cooperating with God, is called sanctification, and this is a progressive work. Wayne Grudem in his book, Systematic Theology says, “Sanctification is a progressive work of God and man that makes us more and more free from sin and like Christ in our actual lives.” Paul says that we must consider ourselves dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus. (Rom. 6:11) This puts the

We can never become good stewards until the process of God in our lives is complete. God is always working something in us and through us (Psa. 138:8, Phil 1:6). One can see that through God’s word, he will perfect and perform his good work in us as His children. In fact the process of becoming is God molding and fashioning us to his will (Rom. 8:29, Phil. 2:13). The exploration

believer in the position of having the ability to say no to sin and yes to Jesus. We must recognize that sin does not have control over us and we are capable of making wise decisions, because we have been set free from sin, Paul says we are slaves no more. The sanctification process is on going in the life of the believer, and it will only be completed when we reach the other side and live with Jesus forever. While we are on planet earth, the sanctification process should be growing stronger and stronger. Paul says just as we once yielded our members to impurity and to greater iniquity, so now we should yield our members to righteousness for sanctification. This process should also be something that I want to do; I must have the right motives. As Christians, we must get back to viewing sin the same way God views it. We are bombarded by the ploys and actions of Satan and to some extent, we have al-

loves to bless HIS CHILDREN! HE LOVES TO SHOW OUT in our lives! HE LOVES TO DISPLAY HIS LOVE, POWER, FAVOR, FAITHFULNESS and so much more in our lives! Therefore, remember; Oh No! Not Now! We can’t grow weary or give up NOW! As written in Joel 2:26-And ye shall eat in plenty, and be satisfied, and praise the name of the LORD your God that hath dealt wondrously with you: and my people shall never be ashamed. Wait on Him, for He SHALL BRING TO PASS THOSE THINGS WHICH WILL FULFIL OUR JOY! Contact information: Dr. Tonya Lewis, onefaith2007@aol.com, One Faith Fellowship, P. O. lowed our senses to be dulled in regards to sin and its effect. We must turn our hearts and mind toward the things of God, stay in His Word and be obedient to His Word. This life must be lived through faith, recognizing that it is no longer about what I think, or what I want, but that God’s will be done, and Jesus Christ is magnified. God is not the author of sin. Sin is not a thing so therefore it is not a creation, it is the absence of something, and that something is righteousness. Dr. Joyce is a layperson under the leadership of Dr. Ticey Brown at the Mt. Jesus wants your full commitment In a loving marriage forevermore Although you say that you love him He sees you swinging on the door Something about being committed Frightens you to no end You lift up his name in song While living in present sin Jesus proposes marriage You reply, “Let’s be friends! “Friends with all your holy benefits “Come home with and let’s pretend”

Jesus leaves you with his proposal Then turns and walks away He says, My Father’s House is not a game And not a place to play Satan arrives with drugs and cash “Let’s shack up - just me and you “You can kiss Jesus on Sundays “I don’t require that you be true “You see, I’m not the jealous type “Though I’ll occasionally knock you to the dirt “Just let me shack-up in your heart “And here’s a hundred to put in church”

THE PROCESS OF BECOMING of this text in Genesis reveals Moses’ account of “The manner of the creation.” He shows to us a summary of the creative age. Then, he describes Jehovah’s mind, Jehovah’s thinking in (5). I hasten to tell us that God was looking for a man to work his field of garden and God is looking for a man to work now. God still has fields of labor whereby he will pay those that will work.

In fact, the Word declares go in to the vineyard and work and whatsoever is right I’ll pay. Jesus said, “Look on the field they are already ripe and ready for harvest.” The harvest truly is great, but the laborers are few: pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he would send forth laborers into his harvest. It is possible then to conclude that the fashioning of man was so to

do God’s desire. The Bible said in Isaiah 43:21- “This people have I formed for myself they shall show forth my praise.” Did not God want a man to till the ground (5c)? So then, God looked for one to till the ground; he formed or molded into a fashion that was pleasing. It was a process, a continuing development involving a course of completion. God completed is work. Jehovah in Gen. 2:7a was just getting started with what he would do with forming man. Many of us do not like what we are neither how we are. There is a process whereby God is working to get you and I to the place where you will serve him and not worry about other stuff (8), but it is a process. In order to help the process along God breathed into his nostrils the breath of life. God put into the man (nesh-aw-maw) divine inspiration, intellect, and spirit having the power to articulate ideas and thoughts processes. In fact, this is why when God brought the animal kingdom to Adam; Adam could readily identify them. Whatever he called them

God said yes. You and I are in the process of becoming all that God formed us to be and having breathed into us. The breath in Adam is the same breath in us as Believers in Jesus, with this breath you can discern directions because of who is in you (Phil 2:13). You can tell the difference between the right paths, which you should take. You can prosper in the things that belong to God because you and I are heirs of God and joint heir with Christ. The breath of God is God in us. After the resurrection Jesus breathed on his disciples and told them to receive ye the Holy Ghost. With the breath of God man became. Therefore, with the process of God’s work Moses tells us that, “And man became.” Man really became at this time made in the image of the triune God and after their likeness (Genesis 1:26-27). Man is at this point a living soul. He is what God breathed into him to become. What we witness in our time is the production of Satan’s interference. Satan always starts his work early. Note that as we have prior knowledge

to the text, Satan deceive Eve before she and Adam became fruitful. Today, what Satan does is, he starts his process before our children and even us really get into Jesus. But thank God we are his work in progress and Satan cannot stop it. Jesus, our Lord has given his life and breathed on us with the Holy Ghost (Ephesians 4:23-24). MATTHEW 28:19 - “Go Ye Therefore and Teach...”

May 8 -- Bible Study Guide 10 shew thee things which must be hereafter. 2 And immediately I was in the spirit: and, behold, a throne was set in heaven, and one sat on the throne. 4:6b In the midst of the throne, and round about the throne, were four beasts full of eyes before and behind. 7 And the first beast was like a lion, and the second beast like a calf, and the third beast had a face as a man, and the fourth beast was like a flying eagle. 8 And the four beasts had each of them six wings about him; and they were full of eyes within: and they rest not day and night, saying, Holy, holy, holy, LORD God Almighty, which was, and is, and is to come. 9 And when those beasts give glory and honour and thanks to him that sat on the throne, who liveth for ever and ever, 10 The four and twenty elders fall down before him that sat on the throne, and worship him that liveth for ever and ever, and cast their crowns before the throne, saying, 11 Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honour and power: for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created.

IN FOCUS Browsing through an art gallery, Sheri turned a corner and found herself wandering through a display of paintings by a local artist. The paintings were boldly colored, sometimes dark, sometimes flashy, but always of unusual images. One showed bizarre sea creatures in photo-realistic detail; it was hard to believe such creatures could be real. Another showed a still life of a bowl of fruit; only after you had looked at it for a while did you see that it was also the shape of a man’s face. Sheri found the paintings strangely beautiful and stared at them intently. Then she noticed a man standing off to one side of the gallery, watching her with a smile. “Do you like it?” he said. “I think so,” said Sheri. “They’re really beautiful, but I’m not entirely sure what they’re supposed to mean.” “I’ll tell you this much: everything I put into them is a bit of my own life story.” Works of art show off not only an artist’s technical skill but also his or her interests and personalities. In the book of Revelation, God reveals Himself as the Creator and Lord of the universe. God’s marvelous works and His holy character give us reason to praise Him. THE PEOPLE, PLACES AND TIMES John. The author of Revelation introduces himself as “John” (Revelation 1:1-2). Church tradition and scholarship generally agree that this John is the same as the author of the fourth Gospel and the three New Testament epistles bearing his name. John was a fisherman who became one of the first disciples called by Jesus (Matthew 4:21-22), one of the Twelve chosen to be apostles (Luke 6:13-16) and an elder in the early church (2 John 1). By all accounts, he was an exceptionally close friend to Jesus (Luke 8:51; John 21:20, 24). His writing is characterized by thoughtfulness, simplicity, and a deep insight into the heart of Jesus’ message. Patmos. According to John, the book of Revelation was written on “the island of Patmos” (1:9). This small island in the Aegean Sea (off the coast of modernday Turkey) was used as a Roman penal colony. Like other persecuted believers, John was probably exiled to Patmos as punishment for preaching the Gospel. BACKGROUND At the time Revelation was written, Christians in general were suffering persecution for their faith in Christ, including imprisonment and even death (1:9; 2:10, 13; 6:9). Though many Roman emperors persecuted Christians (most notably Nero in A.D. 64), this particular wave of persecution probably took place under the reign of Emperor Domitian (A.D. 81-96). The book of Revelation is filled with encouraging words and imagery for persecuted or suffering believers. The book begins with John’s vision of the exalted Jesus, who dictates a series of short prophetic letters that encourage the suffering churches of Asia Minor to repent and remain strong in their faith (chapters 1-3). However, the writing style rapidly changes to a genre known as apocalypse, from the Greek word for “unveiling.” Apocalyptic literature depicts a vision or revelation from God, usually with fantastic imagery and mysterious symbols. Old Testament prophets such as Ezekiel, Zechariah, and Daniel also wrote in the apocalyptic genre. While their symbolism may be hard for us to understand fully, the underlying message of the vision in Revelation always points back to hope in God and the supremacy, glory, and eternal victory of Jesus Christ. IN DEPTH 1. John’s Vision of the Heavenly Throne: Symbols of God’s Nature (Revelation 4:1-2, 6b-8a) John’s account begins with the sight of an open door in the sky and the sound of a voice inviting him to visit heaven and see a glimpse of the future. Before he even has a chance to respond, he is immersed in a spiritual vision of the throne room of God. At the center of the vision is a throne with “one” sitting upon it (v. 2). The symbolism of the throne, at least, is obvious. As the place where kings hold court, a throne shows the king’s authority, sovereignty, power, and majesty. As the King of kings and Ruler of the universe, God deserves our respect, worship, and awe. The imagery becomes less predictable as the throne is described in terms of precious stones, rainbows, thunder, and lightning—things that are beautiful, inspire awe, and show God’s creative work in nature (vv. 3, 5). A “sea of glass” surrounds the throne (v. 6). “Twenty-four elders” are seated around the throne of God in 24 thrones of their own, dressed in white with gold crowns (v. 4). Some interpreters believe that these elders may be the 12 apostles and the 12 patriarchs of Israel, who are alluded to elsewhere in the vision (Revelation 21:12, 14). However, as is typical in apocalyptic literature, they aren’t definitely identified here. The 24 elders described in verse 4 are upstaged by a sight that is nothing short of bizarre: four “beasts” (KJV) or “living beings” (NLT) in the inner ring around the throne (v. 6b). One is in the form of a lion, one like a calf, one like a man, and one like a flying eagle. There the normality ceases. Each has six wings and is covered with eyes on every side of its body. John was not the first prophet to mention such creatures. Isaiah and Ezekiel also had visions of heavenly beings that were somewhat similar, though with tantalizing differences. Isaiah’s vision includes six-winged “seraphim” that fly around the throne of God, though he does not give a further description of their shape or form (Isaiah 6:2). Ezekiel also saw flying angelic

creatures around God’s throne. In his case, each creature had two wings and four faces—the faces of a man, a lion, an ox, and an eagle (Ezekiel 1:1-10). 2. The Heavenly Creatures Worship God for Who He Is (vv. 8b-9) The four creatures in John’s vision may look outlandish, but they have a unique occupation. Day and night, without any rest, they continually sing a song of worship to God. As portrayed in the Scriptures, worship is not an activity that we are required to perform at certain times such as Sunday mornings. It is a way of life that should fill every moment. In the Old Testament, a team of musicians was assigned to worship before the ark of God in rotating shifts (1 Chronicles 16; 25), and in the New Testament, believers are enjoined to “Rejoice evermore. Pray without ceasing” (1 Thessalonians 5:16-17). This doesn’t mean that we always have to be on our knees or singing a song, but that our attention should be constantly fixed on God and constantly responding to thoughts of Him. The heavenly creatures embody this idea with their unending song: “Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty, which was, and is, and is to come” (Revelation 4:8). These words focus entirely on God’s nature and character. Holiness is the only one of God’s character qualities to be given a threefold repetition in Scripture, a poetic flourish that gives a word the strongest possible emphasis. The other occurrence is in Isaiah’s vision of God’s throne, where the six-winged seraphim also sing “Holy, holy, holy” (Isaiah 6:3). God’s holiness—His perfect goodness and His total separation from evil—identifies Him better than anything else. God is also described as “Almighty.” There is no possible being with greater power than God, and God has unlimited power to do anything He desires. “Is there any thing too hard for me?” God asks rhetorically (Jeremiah 32:27), and Scripture concurs: God “is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think” (Ephesians 3:20). Finally, God is eternal: “which was, and is, and is to come” (Revelation 4:8). God’s existence does not depend on our time frame; He “liveth forever and ever” (Revelation 4:9). He is Lord of the past, the present, and the future. As Genesis shows, He existed before He created the world, and as Revelation shows, He will continue to exist after our world ends. He is not limited by anything—even time itself—that seems permanent to us. Thinking about who God is leads us to worship Him. Just as we naturally feel awe when we see a mountain or naturally laugh when we hear a good joke, so worship is the natural response to a glimpse of what God is really like. Worship here consists simply of describing God’s character. God’s position as the almighty, infinite Creator calls for our reverence and awe. 3. The Elders Worship God for What He Does (vv. 10-11) The 24 elders are moved by the song of the heavenly beings. They prostrate themselves in worship before God and throw down their crowns in front of His throne (v. 10). Bowing with one’s face to the ground is a sign of deep humility, while a crown is a symbol of honor, victory, or authority. The elders recognize that even their exalted state is nothing before the awesome majesty of God. Any serious reflection on the greatness of God must end in a genuine sense of deep humility. The elders add counterpoint to the chorus of praise with a song of their own: “Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honour and power: for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created” (v. 11). Like the four living creatures, the elders begin with a declarative statement about God’s nature: God is worthy. “Worthy” is another term of value. If we say that something is worthy, we mean that it deserves a certain response. Something is due to it; it’s only right that it should receive it. The psalmist expressed it well: “Give unto the LORD the glory due unto his name; worship the LORD in the beauty of holiness” (Psalm 29:2, emphasis added). God is worthy to receive glory, honor, and power. Every good quality has its origin in Him and comes back to Him. The elders worship God for who He is, but also for what He does. Like a creative artist who enjoys his or her work, God created because He wanted to. Artists take pleasure, care, and delight in their creative work, and they enjoy it when they can make a project simply to please themselves. All good artists reflect aspects of themselves in their work. In the same way, God’s creation reflects His glory, majesty, creativity, and His personal connection and involvement in what He has made. When we worship God for what He does, we acknowledge not only His character and His power, but that He is personally involved in our world. God’s work reflects His character and shows that it translates into action. Because of who He is and what He has done, God is worthy of worship from every created being. The heavenly beings of every order bow and sing praises to God, and we as redeemed humans join in their chorus of worship. MORE LIGHT ON TEXT Revelation 4:1-2, 6b-11 1 After this I looked, and, behold, a door was opened in heaven: and the first voice which I heard was as it were of a trumpet talking with me; which said, Come up hither, and I will shew thee things which must be hereafter. The ultimate mind-boggling fact about heaven is that the saints are in God’s presence. John gives us a recap of his heavenly visit; although he most definitively is honored to receive a heavenly call to the throne, he avoids any hint of personal privilege. John had received an invitation he was not worthy of and could not refuse. The opening phrase literally means “after these things, I looked and behold.” The word idou (id-OO) translated “behold” is a Greek word used to emphasize what follows.

In this context what follows is a door in heaven and a voice that sounded like a trumpet. It was as if John was saying, “Now that the church knows what God thinks about some of its priorities on earth [see Revelation 2-3], God wants to declare what heaven’s priority is.” One thing is for sure: heaven had John’s attention. When a heavenly trumpet is sounded, it is time to listen (Revelation 1:10; Exodus 19:16), for God is about to speak. And speak He did. God commanded John to come up to heaven, for he would be shown great things that had yet to come. John himself did not ascend to heaven; rather he was taken in the spirit. When the revelation began, John says he was “in the spirit” (Revelation 1:10). Unbridled communion with God is always a working of the Spirit (Galatians 5:5, 16-25). 2 And immediately I was in the spirit: and, behold, a throne was set in heaven, and one sat on the throne. As John was prepared to be in God’s presence, suddenly he saw a throne set in heaven and the One who sat on the throne. This is the focus of this section. Attempts could be made to elaborate on earthly thrones to provide examples of what it means to sit in the place of absolute authority and power. However, Jesus declared that heaven is God’s throne (Matthew 5:34). If heaven is God’s throne and John saw a throne set in heaven, then heaven is filled with the presence of God. The word “set” (Gk. keimai, KI-mahee) implies more than that which occupies time and space; in this passage it means something that has predestined continuity and purpose. A passage in Luke explains the significance of this word in relation to Jesus. Simeon, a man full of the Holy Spirit, says to Mary and Joseph, “Behold, this child is set for the fall and rising again of many in Israel; and for a sign which shall be spoken against” (Luke 2:34). The throne is about an eternal plan that sees its fulfillment in an eternal Person, in whom all power, rule, and authority reside. The second part of Revelation 4:2 literally means “I [John] observed [or envisioned] the One sitting on the throne.” The Greek word for “sitting” originates from the Hebrew word yashab (yaw-SHAB), which means to inhabit a permanent dwelling place. The relationship between the throne and the One sitting on the throne are eternal in nature and affirm the will of God. When God’s throne and the One sitting on the throne are the subject, all thoughts must be directed at who He is, what He has done, and why we have been granted the privilege to be in His presence. 6b In the midst of the throne, and round about the throne, were four beasts full of eyes before and behind. We think of cherubs as chubbycheeked baby angels, not the beasts that are described in these verses. The Greek for “beast” is zoon (DZOon), which is better translated as “a living thing” or “an animal.” Ezekiel 1:6, 10, 22, 26, describes similar creatures, except that each of the creatures in Ezekiel had four different faces—the faces of a man, a lion, an ox, and a calf. In Ezekiel 10:20, the prophet tells us that these creatures are cherubim (cherubs). The Hebrew word keruwb (ker-OOB) with the English ending -im is the plural form. These creatures are always found around the throne of God and constantly engaged in praising and worshiping God. 7 And the first beast was like a lion, and the second beast like a calf, and the third beast had a face as a man, and the fourth beast was like a flying eagle. Bible scholars have spent much time analyzing and looking for symbolism in the descriptions of the four beasts. These flying creatures of adoration spend all their time in the presence of God, so it seems likely that they reflect certain aspects of Him, especially of the Son of God. The lion is the king of the beasts, known for its power and authority. So this cherub reflects the leadership and royal power of our Lord. The calf is the animal of sacrifice; this cherub reminds us that Jesus Christ came to give His life giving His blood for us. The cherub with the appearance of a man can represent the incarnation of Jesus, His lowering of Himself to come in human form. And some have thought that the eagle represents the Holy Spirit who hovers over us. Almost from the earliest days of Christianity, Bible scholars have tried to match the four beasts with the four Gospels, and St. Augustine of North Africa proposed the most widely accepted identifications. Matthew is best represented by the lion because he portrays Jesus as the Lion of Judah, the King of the Jews. Mark is represented by the cherub with the face of the man because he focuses on the human life of our Lord. Luke is best represented by the calf because he presents Jesus as the sacrifice for all men and women everywhere. John represents the eagle because

the eagle flies so high that it is said to look into the face of the sun and the thoughts in the Gospel of John are the deepest and highest of the four Gospels. 8 And the four beasts had each of them six wings about him; and they were full of eyes within: and they rest not day and night, saying, Holy, holy, holy, LORD God Almighty, which was, and is, and is to come. These beasts or creatures have been described as h avin g th e highest intelligence of all beings as represented by their many eyes (Phillips, 86). They employ their intellects, their hearts, and their wills toward one activity: to constantly worship God. Although we may rest in sleep, rest on the Sabbath, and rest in death, these living creatures never rest, but are constantly praising God. There is never any time among God’s creation that He is not being praised. These cherubim have six wings, just as the seraphim of Isaiah 6:2 do. Isaiah wrote that the seraphim used two wings to cover their faces, two to cover their feet, and two for flying. In other words, four of the wings are used to show their reverence and humility in the presence of God. This doxology, the song of praise of the cherubim, praises God for three aspects. First, it praises God for His holiness. The Greek word for “holy” in this passage is hagios (HAG-eeos), which means sacred—physically sacred, pure, morally blameless, ceremonially clean, consecrated. The basic idea of holiness is difference. God is completely separate and different from human beings and any other created beings. That is why we are moved to adore Him. If He were simply bigger and grander than us, we would not be moved to worship Him. He is totally other. “The very mystery of God moves us to awed admiration in his presence and to amazed love that that greatness should stoop so low for us men [and women] and for our salvation” (Barclay, 162). The second aspect of the doxology of the cherubim is praising God for His omnipotence. Omnipotence is the all-powerfulness of God. God is the Almighty. When John wrote the book of Revelation, most of the then-known world was under the rule of the Roman Empire. History books sometimes call this era the Pax Romana (Roman peace). This was because any opposition was ruthlessly stamped out. Under the Roman Empire many of the early Christians were martyred. It was surely comforting to these early believers to know that the One standing behind them was the Almighty. As believers, we, too, may feel helpless against our situations, but we can know that for sure God will triumph in the end. God will keep us safe both in life and in death. The third aspect of the cherubim’s song of worship was praising God for His eternality; He is the God who was,

who is, and who is to come. Although as believers we can look forward to eternity with Him, we cannot look back on our own eternity. Only God has always existed. And while we look at things from a timeline in which our memories of the past became vague with age and tomorrow is almost completely unknown, God is always existent. In addition to knowing everything from the very beginning, He can see tomorrow just as clearly as He sees today. He endures unchanging, while all around the empires we create are falling apart. 9 And when those beasts give glory and honour and thanks to him that sat on the throne, who liveth forever and ever, 10 The four and twenty elders fall down before him that sat on the throne, and worship him that liveth forever and ever, and cast their crowns before the throne, saying, 11 Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honour and power: for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created. As the elders testified to the worship of “the living creatures,” they could do nothing but fall down before Him, give back the crowns they had been given, and declare His praises. This was no inadvertent falling; the elders cast themselves down. The Greek word for “fall down” is pipto (PIP-to). It does not matter where the praise is coming from or who is giving it; when God is praised, the proper response is for everyone else in the room to fall down and worship. They worship Him because He is “worthy” (axios, AX-ee-os). God supremely deserves to receive the glory, honor, and power that is given to Him. Through John, the Spirit of the Lord says to the church that the redeemed are to offer continual, unbridled praise to God because (1) all things were created by Him and (2) all things were created for His pleasure. God has one design for us, which is to glorify Him.

Mother’s Board Annual Program The Mother’s Board of Bible Fellowship Baptist Church would love to have you as a special guest, at the view of a Heavenly View on Sunday May 15, 2011 at 3:00pm. Lillian McFarland and Sis Julia Crowder. We will love to see you here. Rev. DeShay Ward Sr. Pastor, Sis. LaVerne Stallworth, President, Sis Bernice Wooden Corresponding Secretary.

THE PREACHING OF THE CROSS What does the preaching of the cross mean? Well it demonstrates Gods salvation; and mans way of hope! Through the proclamation of the cross man believes for his heavenly security! Why is the preaching of the cross Gods only method for salvation? Let us examine five reasons why the preaching of the cross is Gods only method of salvation. 1. Because only the cross is Gods power to save. 1 Cor 1:17-18. “For Christ sent me not to baptize, but to preach the gospel: not with wisdom of words; lest the cross of Christ should be made of none effect. For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us who are saved, it is the power of God!” We don’t come with eloquence of speech because that would void out the power and anointing of God thereby His Word and its effect on your life would be lost! The preaching of the cross is foolish to those who don’t believe; but unto you who are believers and followers of God-it is the power to save! a. Speak the right message with the right motive. “Preach the gospel, not in wisdom of words.” It is not our good vocabulary or great intelligent’s which saves you; but God the Holy Spirit moving through the message of the cross in those who believe and receive the truth! b. The power of salvation lies in the cross of Christ. “The preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us who are saved it is the power of God!” Once the preaching of the cross has occurred the people either believe it to their salvation; or reject it as foolishness to their destruction. 2. Because the cross confounds the wise of the world. 1 Cor 1:19-20. “I will destroy the wisdom of the wise ... God hath made foolish the wisdom of this world.” God chooses to demonstrate His salvation by means of the crossagainst the worlds methods of reform (which prove foolish to save.) a. Worldly wisdom fades away. “I will bring to nothing the wisdom of the prudent.” All the worlds wise who reject the cross will fall on the stumbling stone and miss Gods salvation. b. Who can instruct God in this world? “Where is the wise... scribe...disputer of this world... God has made foolish the wisdom of the world.” Sense the world, in all its pomp and glory, rejects the good news and the cross of Christ; God saw fit to demonstrate that such wisdom is power-less to save. 3. Because people only come into a saving relationship by the cross. 1 Cor 1:21. “In the wisdom of God;

the world by wisdom knew not God; it pleased God by the foolishness of preaching to save them that believe.” God has and is proving that the worlds wisdom cannot bring anybody into right standing and personal interaction with God. a. Worldly wisdom doesn’t cut it. “The world by wisdom knew not God.” There is no element in worldly wisdom to invoke God. Nor is there the power to draw God to bring us into a saving relationship with Him. b. “It takes the proclamation of the good news. “It pleased God by the foolishness of preaching to save them that believe.” Only through hearing the good news can one believe, call on God, and be saved. This is Gods only method of saving people. Rom 10:13-15. 4. Because it blows away the aspirations of the worldly. 1 Cor 1:2223. “The Jews require a sign; the Greeks seek after wisdom. But we preach Christ crucified... “ Here the people of the world; each race; cling to their own sources of comfort and value’s, but in the good news, Jesus Christ and His cross wipes away all such hopes as delusions. There is no hope outside of Christ and His Cross! a. The world clings to its comforts. “The Jews seek a sign ... the Greeks seek wisdom.” It is so foolish to think worldly things can bring eternal security. b. Christ crucified is the stumbling stone. “We preach Christ crucified.... a stumbling block ... foolishness!” The world disdains the cross; and thy get hung-up on unbelief; therefore salvation passes them by. 5. Because the cross is Gods central demonstration of power and love. 1 Cor 1:24-25. “Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God ... the foolishness of God is wiser then the wisdom of men; and the weakness of God is stronger then men.” The millions who-ever got saved were saved only by Gods power through the cross; never through human reasoning; or mans devising! a. Christ is the way. “Christ the power of God and wisdom of God.” Jesus Christ is the demonstration of God might, love, and intelligent’s. Defeating sin, flesh, the world, hell, and the grave on the cross is the greatest act of love God could give us! b. Gods way is the right way. “The foolishness of God is wiser then men...the weakness of God is stronger then men! God didn’t make a mistake; only through the cross can you get to Jesus; and only through Jesus can you get to the Father! Conclusion: So choose Gods only method for bringing hope to the world; and you’ll be a beacon of hope by keeping Gods covenant!

Meet Us at The FORCE Month (Come and Stay a While) Greetings in the Name that’s above Every Name! The CHRISTIAN FORCE M.B.C. Family would like to cordially invite you to come and worship the Lord with us. Our theme for 2011 is “A Church Making Every Effort to Grow in God’s Supply” (Phil. 4:9). As we face the challenges of the day, let us not lose focus that our God can and will supply every need according to his riches in glory. The Word of God teaches us that He has given us the keys to the Kingdom, so let us operate with the absurdity that He is Able to do more than we could ask or think (Eph. 3:20). Come and Grow with us as we continue to keep our eyes on that prize of his high calling. Come and we believe that you just might Stay a While. We’re a body that’s seeking to move not by might, nor by our own power which means that we know that all things are by His Spirit. God has already shown himself among us as He has blessed us to begin a weekly Mid-Week Bible study entitled “The Lunch Table” which is made available every Wednesday @ 12pm. We have general Bible Study on the 1st, 2nd and 3rd Saturdays of the month, and the 4th Saturdays are dedicated to our Mission Ministry. We invite those who are in need to come on the 4th Saturdays as we reach out to this community and abroad with the Word, Feeding and Clothing (WFC) give away. Our SundaySchool hour begins @ 9:30am and our Morning Worship expe-

rience begins @ 11:15am. There is a great work that God has entrusted to us here at The FORCE and we’re standing strong in His Supply. We must be about our Father’s business so those who would partner in any way with us are welcome. We encourage you who are striving for a closer walk to come and be a part of what God is doing here at The FORCE. COMING EVENTS Upcoming Dates… May 15, 2011 @ 3:30pm. The Men’s Department will host Melodies from Heaven. Invited guests include the Classic Souls 4-Christ of Riverside, CA. These brothers will come along side with us as we lift up the Savior in song. Oh what a sight to see!!! Men in this present day and age lifting up the Name of Jesus! May 29, 2011 @ 3:00pm our Women’s Department will host a Pew Rally. Our sisters have challenged the membership to bring out as many as they can gather to fill the house with Praise. There are designated colors to be worn on that day so call and get your assignment. “The Battle Lines are Drawn”, so what’s your COLOR? To God Be the Glory for the things that He has done. Please see our church directory information in this great publication. Respectfully submitted by, Sis. Tameka Forte, Public Relations, CHRISTIAN FORCE M.B.C. 1008 N. Choose Responsibly Does your choices matter? If you eat wrong then you will have health issues. And if you dis-regard Gods will then you will put yourself in a bad position in life. Therefore choices are a gift from God and we must choose responsibly. What I am saying in this teaching is that your choices in life can be either a blessing or a curse to you. Why are your choices either a blessing or a curse? Let us look at three things that help us to see why our choices become either a blessing or a curse. 1. In any occupational dwelling there is an element of choosing. Gen 2:15. “And the Lord God took the man, and put him into the garden of Eden to dress it and to keep it.” God made this garden of pleasure and repose for our forefather Adam and Eve to dwell in. They were given responsibilities and choices as we all are in whatever living dwelling we find ourselves in. We will find choices that either propel us towards God; or ones that cause us to shrink back from God. You will be choosing which way you go. a. “To dress it.” Here is a measure of responsibility. b. “Keep it.” They were appointed to be a faithful steward over this place; and that implies being responsible with ones choices. Adam had been given the privilege of making choices in the garden: naming the animals, walking with God, etc.. God was teaching him to be responsible with his choices and role in the garden. The purpose of the tree of knowledge of good and evil was to teach Adam character. He was to continue to live a blessed life even when there is something odd in the midst of paradise. How many know some people don’t have enough leadership to say no to temptation. I’m not getting on Adams case because we have all done this at one time or another. We have all partaken of something that was forbidden. But upon our born again experience we should grow into Christ image. We have to attempt to practice a continued pursuit of acknowledging God and following through on His plan for life. This will develop your character into the image of Christ. 2. Man has a general allowance of liberty. Gen 2:16. “And the Lord God commanded the man saying, of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat...’” God gave Adam some great liberties. God is the giver of liberty; its a product of the Spirit of God. 2 Cor 3:17. So Adam must have felt like the king of the hill and full of dignity. a. “the Lord God commanded ...” God commanded Adam to partake of his liberty; but only in the proper way-according to the Word of God. Once that was violated, the result was the fall. We all have a measure of liberty granted from God. When we stray from the Word-we loose that liberty. Adam could freely partake of those things that were granted; but not of the one tree that God commanded him not to eat of. As Americans we aught to exercise our liberty in a way that honors God and keep His Word. There are options that the Word of God does not grant us liberty to freely partake of or participate in. Going against the Word will remove those liberties. 3. Anything in which the Word of God condemns must be by-passed as an option. Gen 2:17. “But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it; for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.” The bible tells us to lay aside the sin which so easily besets us. As we gain an understanding of Gods Word we need to apply it to life as God puts it in our heart. a. “Thou shalt not eat of it.” God will direct you on how to apply the Word. He will show you what you should and should not do for any particular situation. Maturity comes as you learn to choose to please God as He reveals the direction your to take. “Thy Word have I hid in my heart that I might not sin against thee!” Psalms 119:11. We should be diligent to continue our fellowship with God in all choices that we make. Learn Continued On Page 7

The Hidden Epidemic

by Andrea Andrews No matter what translation of the Bible we read, John 1:8 reads exactly the same, “If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.” It is believed that most Christians understand this scripture fully and recognize that this natural life without sin is impossible. The consolation of this truth lies in the gift of the Messiah! While sin can not be escaped, iniquity is an entirely different matter. Iniquity is defined as sin that is deliberate (premeditated); sin we have not asked to be delivered from the moment it invades our thoughts; sin of which we fail to resist and allow it to overtake us and drive us to reenact that which we know is wrong. Most of us immediately draw our attention to habits like smoking, alcoholism, etc. The

heartbreaking news is that this form of iniquity does not claim as many lives each year (combined) as does the “hidden epidemic”… Ever wonder why there is such an increase in the growing numbers of cancer, diabetes, arthritis…? John Bevere, author of a remarkable book – The Bait of Satan: Living Free From the Deadly Trap of Offense, addresses this question by writing, “Medical doctors and scientists have linked unforgiveness and bitterness with certain diseases such as arthritis and cancer.” When reading this single sentence, it served as immediate confirmation of the hidden epidemic which affects the world population. More importantly…it’s infected the Body of Christ in disproportionate numbers. Disproportionate? Yes! One-third of the world population (2 billion people) is recorded as being Christian. Of the 2 billion who are professed Christians, it is probable that a vast number (more than 85% - conservatively) struggle with the inability to forgive. Healing ministries will justify that the majority of the intercession they participate in is relative to someone battling cancer. The global church would add depression. Disease and affliction of any kind are simply

YOUR POSSIBLE DREAM 1 Kings 11:37-38

Have you ever cooperated with others? Perhaps as a student you cooperated with your teacher. Maybe as a worker you cooperated with your supervisor. If your married you have to cooperate with your spouse. But did you know that God wants you to cooperate with Him to fulfill your destiny? What I want you to understand in this letter is that you must cooperate with God to fulfill Gods vision for your life. There are three truths that will help your possible dream become a reality in God. First let God cast His vision for you. 1 Kings 11:37. “And I will take thee, and thou shalt reign according to all that thy soul desireth, and shalt be king over Israel.” This is the call to Jeroboam. Here God takes Jeroboam because he initially had great integrity. God said to him, “I will take thee;” the Lord told Him he would be a part of Gods plan. God wants to take you, also, for His good pleasure. He wants to cast a vision for a great work for you to do. He told Jeroboam that he shall reign! Here Jeroboam received the vision God had for him. You need to spend time with God to acquire His vision for your life. Spiritual disciplines are so very important to acquire your vision and to fulfill it. Training is also necessary to do great things for God. So seek God for His plan and vision for your life. In this way you become receptive to His plan and vision for your life. Secondly you need to fulfill Gods requirements upon the work He calls you to do. 1 Kings 11:38a. “If thou wilt hearken unto all that I command thee, and wilt walk in my ways, and do that is right in my sight, to keep my statutes and my commands as David did.” This is Jeroboam’s specific instructions and requirement from God. Each ministry has specific requirements from God if one is to see the blessings of the work. The blessings are determined upon your obedience to the requirements of God. “Hearken to what I command thee..” You need to obey Gods Word and leading. God told Jeroboam that if he would hearken as king David; that he would have

symptoms of a larger problem – unforgiveness. The Bible mentions the word “forgive” more than 50 times and the word “forgiveness” eight or more times (depending upon the translation). Forgiving others is referenced in Matthew 6:12-15;5:11,12;18:22; Mark 11:25; Luke 11:4; Romans 8:28; 12:19: Colossians 3:13; Ephesians 4:32; I John 1:7 (to name a few). The Lord Jesus even instructs that to forgive seven times isn’t nearly a drop in the bucket! The assurance that God promises to forgive us according to how we forgive others should serve as warning enough about the crucial nature of forgiveness. Perhaps the scripture might have had a greater impact had it been written, ‘One who fails to forgive others will surely die’. If you hold anything in your heart against anyone, please set yourself free. One who holds onto grudges, bitterness, hostility and pain has created an invisible and even sometimes visible prison for themselves. The inability to focus, sleep, receive the presence of God, or the gift of true joy, is all connected to the absence of forgiveness. If you want to be healed, surrender. If you want to be blessed, surrender. If you want to know true peace, surrender. If

to put off what you know God would not be pleased with. And think of what God would like you to do and do it. You’ll need to pray and study your bible for such a lifestyle. Conclusion: So choose in a way your choices bring the blessing of God. Use your choices to build godly character; then you can enjoy the liberty of a God favored life. I’m not saying it will be a garden of Eden; but if you walk in God’s favor then you will have your own well of pleasure and virtue.

you want to grow, surrender. And, if you struggle with not being able to forgive remember that in and of ourselves we can do nothing – BUT… we can do all things through Christ who strengthens us. Peace, Love & Blessings

Church Accepting Resume for Pastor

Greater New Bethel Baptist Church of Inglewood, CA is happy to announce the retirement of our Pastor, the Reverend Earl A. Pleasant. Pastor Pleasants retirement is scheduled for July, 2011. At that time we will be seeking a new Pastor to lead this great Church. If the Lord is laying it on your heart to become a candidate for this Ministry, please submit your resume to the Greater New Bethel Baptist Church, 601 East 99th Street. Inglewood, CA 90301. You may also FAX your resume at: (310) 419-5915. You may also submit your resume via E-mail to: Deacon Glenn Ford; gnbbcpulpitcommittee@yahoo.com. All resumes should be submitted by March 14th – June 10, 2011. YOURS IN CHRIST DEACON GLENN FORD, Chairman Pulpit Committee. just as great a dynasty. But what God is saying is that king David did it-so can you Jeroboam. And we can do this also. Romans 12:1-2 expresses how doing Gods will is reasonable, acceptable, and the perfect plan for our lives. What God asks of us is reasonable; many have done Gods will; and so can we! Hebrews chapter 11 speaks of many who kept the faith in obedience. You need an active-dependence upon God in order to fulfill your call. That means you work with God as you depend upon Him to help you do His will. So seek to know Gods will for your life; so that you understand the requirements; then carry the instructions whole-heartedly. As you obey God in your call, you will fulfill His will and obtain the blessing. Third, you need to strive for the great destiny that God proclaims over your life. 1 Kings 11:38b. “That I will be with thee and build thee a sure house, as I built for David, and will give Israel unto thee.” A key here is that God would be with Jeroboam. We cant do anything without Gods help. The sad thing is that Jeroboam lost Gods help and guidance through rebellion against God. Here God proclaims a great destiny and reward if Jeroboam will be faithful to Him. Faithfulness to carry out Gods will is required if you will fulfill your God appointed, and God directed work. God told Jeroboam that He would build him a sure house. Jeroboam was just required to faithfully obey God; and God would build the house. But Jeroboam thought he had to do Gods part by diverting his people from worship in Judah; so he set up idols for the people to worship. God told Jeroboam that if he would be faithful that He would give Israel unto him. If he would have trusted God; God would have done this; here was incentive to be faithful. If you will set your eyes on God; and live your life pleasing to Him; then you can fulfill your God appointed destiny. God sets a possible dream before you; but will you pursue Him for it? 1 Peter 1 speaks of a lively hope we have as we continue in Jesus Christ. Therefore determine to be faithful to God and serve Him all your life. The reward God will give you is a reward for a lifelong loyalty to God. Conclusion: So cooperate with God in the fulfillment of His vision and plan for you. By seeking God regularly; God will clarify and mobilize you to fulfill your dream in Him.
