DR. & MRS. PRENTISS E. LEWIS HONOREES

The Greater Starlight M.B.C. family invites you to come and celebrate with us in our Pastor and Wife’s 20th Appreciation services honoring two of God’s loyal and dedicated. Our theme is “A Pastor For All Seasons” (II Timothy 4:1-5): I charge you therefore before God and the Lord Jesus Christ, who will judge the living and the dead at His appearing and His Kingdom: Preach the Word! Be ready in season and out of season. Convince, rebuke, exhort, with all longsuffering and teaching. For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine, but according to their own desires, because they have itching ears, they will heap up for themselves teachers; and they will turn their ears away from the truth, and be turned aside to fables. But you be watchful in all things, endure afflictions, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry. Our celebration will commence Sunday, October 2, 2011 at 4:00p.m. Celebrating with us in these services will be: October 2, 2011 –

PASTOR S. “SCUFFIE” SHIGG

Why Aren’t You Working? I Timothy 5:8 is one of the strongest statements in the Bible: “If any one does not provide for his relatives, and especially for his own family, he has disowned the faith and is worse than an unbeliever (RSV). Or, as the King James version says, he is

LIFT

“worse than an infidel.” Last Saturday, a six-hour Notary Public class was offered at our church, immediately followed by the State exam. Only nine people attended. Now, I ask the question, “why aren’t YOU working?” Usually, the answer is “because no one will hire me.” Do you have any work experience? Have you even thought about working for yourself? If you have the experience, what equipment do you need? Do you know that you can help create a job for yourself, as well as for someone with no experience? If you had the necessary equipment, would you be able to work? An experienced worker with the proper equipment, a customer in need, and a job well done equals a happy, paying customer and a satisfied worker. Everyone else

is providing for their own, why not us? God is holding “us” responsible for young people standing around, doing nothing with their lives. We are interested in finding experienced workers willing to train and partner with others to earn a living to take care of “the family.” If you fit this description, please attend an informational meeting on Tuesday, October 4, 7 P.M., at Love Lifted Me Missionary Baptist Church Fellowship Hall. For further information, please call the Church office at 323-778-5438. Remember, love is everywhere, and we are located at 6501 Crenshaw Boulevard, Los Angeles 90043. Bro. FRIENDLYWILL MISSIONARY BAPTIST CHURCH Celebrates 3000 Sundays of Praise & Worship

PASTOR CHEZ LISTER HOST

The date was Sunday, April 18, 1954, Easter Sunday Morning. It was on this day, that our eternal all powerful true and living God, ordained, anointed, and commissioned, our late founder, Pastor Lorea Johnson and a small

group of born again believers to be His witnesses to the world and He called them FRIENDLYWILL. From that day, The Friendlywill Missionary Baptist Church by the grace, mercy and power of God, has gathered together every Sunday without fail, to worship and praise our King of Kings, and Lord of Lords, Jesus Christ. We honor and glorify God in recognition of our humble beginnings and our very first worship service. As we continue to testify and stand as witnesses for Jesus Christ as a church body, we are approaching a monumental milestone in our church history. On Sunday, October 9, 2011, we

will reach the milestone of 3,000 consecutive Sunday morning worship services for the Friendlywill Missionary Baptist Church. For this reason and upon reaching this great milestone by the grace of God, we pause and turn towards our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, to render our praises and thanksgiving unto Him for bringing us safely this far. Our theme for this grand occasion, “Lord You Brought Us From A Mighty Long Way” Joshua 24:17. In honor of this day of celebration, we are Continued On Page 7 FRIENDLYWILL......

10 If you can find a truly good wife, she is worth more than precious gems! 11 Her husband can trust her, and she will richly satisfy his needs. 12 She will not hinder him but help him all her life. 13 She finds wool and flax and busily spins it. 14 She buys imported foods brought by ship from distant ports. 15 She gets up before dawn to prepare breakfast for her household and plans the day’s work for her servant girls. 16 She goes out to inspect a field and buys it; with her own hands she plants a vineyard. 17 She is energetic, a hard worker, 18 and watches for bargains. She works far into the night! 19 She sews for the poor and generously helps those in need. 21 She has no fear of winter for her household, for she has made warm clothes for all of them. 22 She also upholsters with finest tapestry; her own clothing is beautifully made-a purple gown of pure linen. 23 Her husband is well known, for he sits in the council chamber with the other civic leaders. 24 She makes belted linen garments to sell to the merchants. 25 She is a woman of strength and dignity and has no fear of old age. 26 When she speaks, her words are wise, and kindness is the rule for everything she says. 27 She watches carefully all that goes on throughout her household and is never lazy. 28 Her children stand and bless her; so does her husband. He praises her with these words: 29 “There are many fine women in the world, but you are the best of them all!” 30 Charm can be deceptive and beauty doesn’t last, but a woman who fears and reverences God shall be greatly praised. 31 Praise her for the many fine things she does. These good deeds of hers shall bring her honor and recognition from people of importance. TLB

BISHOP BRODERICK HUGGINS ST. PAUL B.C. OF OXNARD

When a child turns two, the saying is usually, “terrible two’s”; however, we, the Metro Family are exclaiming, “It’s only been two years?”, as we stand in awe at what God has done through our leader, PASTOR ELTON LAMAR JOHNSON! No one but a Man of God following after God could accomplish in this ministry what most churches have yet to even chip at. Therefore, our Pastor’s Care Team and the Anniversary Committee decree, “Let the celebration begin!” TODAY, October 2nd, the jubilee will embrace Bishop Broderick Huggins & St. Paul B.C. of Oxnard, CA, Pastor Dr. Albert Nicholas & Pilgrim B.C., and Dr. Susie Holmes-Jones &

Yahweh’s House of Prayer & Worship Center; October 9th, we anxiously await the fellowship with Pastor Joe Smith & Pilgrim’s Hope Bible Church, and Bishop Johnny Withers & Unity Christian Fellowship; October 16th, we will pinnacle with Pastor Wayne Chaney, Jr. & Antioch Church of Long Beach, CA, Pastor Kevin Stafford & Zion Baptist Evangelistic Temple, and Pastor Anthony Smith & Jericho B.C. All services will begin at 3:30 in the afternoon. (*first names listed are speakers for the afternoon). We boast in the Lord at not just the structural enhancements to Metro: new ceiling, new air conditioning/heating unit, totally remodeled sanctuary, fellowship hall, and added minister’s lounge (more projects underway), but we more so boast at the spiritual changes in this body of believers which many had disregarded, dismissed, and disengaged. Don the celebratory colors for the day of black & white, and catch the vision at 4200 South Hooper Avenue in the City of the Angels. Sis. Sheila Hardy, PCT Prez.; Rev. Elton L. IN FOCUS The parents’ school council meeting was getting louder and louder. The council president was upset about her daughter getting bad grades in Mr. Washington’s class. “I think we ought to get rid of him!” she shouted. “Did he say why your daughter was getting bad grades?” Ms. Jones asked quietly. “Oh, he’s giving too much homework, and she’s not getting it done,” the president answered indignantly. “Well, I make my son do his homework right after school, and he is doing very well in Mr. Washington’s class,” Ms. Jones quietly interjected. The other parents weren’t saying anything. They knew that the principal and the president were good friends. The principal would probably do whatever the president told her to do. Do you think the schoolchildren will profit from the principal listening to the powerful parents’ school council president? Why is it that people are more likely to listen to an outspoken leader than to the wise words of a person with no power? THE PEOPLE, PLACES AND TIMES The Author of Ecclesiastes. The author of Ecclesiastes calls himself qoheleth, or “teacher” (KJV calls him the preacher), but he also describes himself as the son of David (1:1) and then in verse 12 the “king over Israel in Jerusalem.” All the kings in the line of David were called sons of David, but only Solomon reigned over all of Israel. After Solomon died, the kingdom was divided, and the sons of David ruled only over the kingdom of Judah, which included the tribe of Benjamin. Ecclesiastes is written from the perspective of an older man who has lived long enough to see that life is not always as simple as we would wish. The lack of a happy ending to the story in today’s Scripture passage is just such an example. Nevertheless the author (qoheleth) has the time that a king at peace would have to consider the meaning of life and this, too, would describe the situation of King Solomon. He also describes himself as having much wisdom (1:16), great opportunities for pleasure (2:3), extensive building programs (2:4-6), unequaled wealth (2:7-8), and as the author of many proverbs (12:9). Again, all these things lead many to conclude that King Solomon is the author of Ecclesiastes. Wisdom Literature in the Bible. Three Old Testament books are commonly defined as the wisdom literature: Job, Proverbs, and Ecclesiastes (some also include Psalms and Song of Solomon, though these are also regarded as poetic literature). These books contain wise sayings, common sense, observations on life, principles of good governance, and wisdom from the spiritual perspective. The Bible concludes that the fear of the Lord is the beginning of true wisdom (Proverbs 1:7). BACKGROUND We can get into real trouble if we take material out of context from the book of Ecclesiastes. The preacher or teacher looked at things first from an earthly perspective. The key phrase is “under the sun,” which we see in the first verse of today’s Scripture passage. When we look at things only from an earthly perspective, we can become very cynical. The greedy and the corrupt often seem to come out ahead. But we need to turn to the end of Ecclesiastes to find out the conclusion of the preacher’s search for the meaning of life. In verses 11:9 and 12:14 we see that as we enjoy what life can offer us, we must always keep in mind that there is God’s judgment in the end. God knows all and sees all, so no one will be able to fool Him. IN DEPTH 1. The Poor but Wise Man (Ecclesiastes 9:1316) Everyone likes a story with a happy ending, but this one does not end that way. We all like to see people give honor to those who are wise and bring about good results. We like to hear that talented people receive rewards, even if they happen to come from circumstances of poverty. But we all know that life is not that way. The book of Ecclesiastes is written from the perspective of an older person who has seen much of life, instead of a starry-eyed young person. If this life on earth is all there is, we cannot count on the “good people” or the wise people to get the rewards. The writer of Ecclesiastes is telling us this parable from the viewpoint of the activities “under the sun,” that is, on this earth without eternity in view. In this story, a powerful army was besieging a small city. The city had walls around it for fortification, as most cities did. The walls were built of thick stone, so an enemy would have to build ramps to go up on top of the city walls. These were called “siege works.” The ramps would allow the enemy to enter the city. The writer of Ecclesiastes does not tell us what clever plan the poor but wise man devised. But, whatever it was, the plan was used to defeat the powerful army of the king. If this story were a fairy tale, it would have a happy ending. The poor but wise man would be honored by everyone. A statue would be erected in his honor. He might even be elected to high office! But that didn’t happen. Soon his wisdom that saved the city was forgotten, and he was forgotten as well. He went back to being a “nobody,” living in poverty. In fact, in the future, when his wisdom could have continued to profit the little city, no one paid any attention to what he said. But the writer of Ecclesiastes still says that wisdom

is better than strength, even if no one pays any attention to words of wisdom. The wisdom of the poor man is still better than the brute force of the powerful king. In order for this to be true, we need to look at things from an eternal perspective. In heaven, the poor but wise man will finally be rewarded. Job had similar concerns to that of the writer of Ecclesiastes. He wondered why he was suffering since he had been living a godly life. Many people expect God to bless those who obey God and punish those who do not. But Job wonderfully concludes that this life on earth is not all there is. In Job 19:25-27 (NIV), we read these wonderful words, “I know that my Redeemer lives, and that in the end he will stand upon the earth. And after my skin has been destroyed, yet in my flesh I will see God; I myself will see him with my own eyes—I, and not another. How my heart yearns within me!” Only with eternity in view can we make sense of the suffering and injustice in this world. When we remember that God will make all things right in the end, it makes sense to pursue wisdom and justice. There may be no happy ending here on earth, but we know that our just and loving God will make all things right. The preacher and Job were living on the other side of the Cross. But because of Jesus, we can be assured that we shall live on forever and there will be a happy ending. 2. The Benefit of Wisdom over Folly (vv. 17-18) A wise mentor-teacher once said that, when a classroom of noisy children makes you feel like yelling at them, lower your voice instead. The children will get very quiet as they try to hear what you are saying. This quiet style of administration is advocated in these two verses. A noisy style is often masking a lack of substance. Unfortunately, crowds prefer a flashy dresser, someone who moves and shouts. The preacher explains that those who rule over fools have learned that style counts more than substance. When we ponder verse 17, we should think about what we expect from our preachers and teachers. Are we ready to listen to quiet words of wisdom or do we expect the big show? Verse 18 encapsulates wisdom that could end wars in our time, if people really followed these words. Peace negotiators may come with words of wisdom that, if heeded, could prevent wars. But all that is needed to stop negotiations is one rebellious person with a loud mouth or worse yet, with weapons of war. This sinner may stir up a crowd of fools, and soon many people are hurt or even killed. This situation can also be applied to warring factions of any kind—the gangs in a neighborhood, the faculty of a school, the office we work in, and even church committees! Are we among those who listen to the agitators, or are we willing to listen to quiet words of wisdom and peace? MORE LIGHT ON TEXT Ecclesiastes 9:13-18 13 This wisdom have I seen also under the sun, and it seemed great unto me: In most Scripture, the term “wisdom” refers to spiritual understanding and obedience. However, in this instance, it is human reason that is the measure. The first assessment of this observation is that here is a great example of wisdom. The key to this verse is the phrase “under the sun.” The Hebrew for “under the sun” is tachath shemesh (TAKH-ath SHEH-mesh). This phrase is used 29 times in the book of Ecclesiastes, and it is very important to understanding where the preacher is coming from. This is a metaphor for life on earth without considering whether or not there is an afterlife. What is the meaning of this life? Does it make any sense? 14 There was a little city, and few men within it; and there came a great king against it, and besieged it, and built great bulwarks against it: The KJV uses the word “bulwarks” in five different places in the Bible and each time it is translated from a different Hebrew word. In this verse, it is translated from the Hebrew matsowd (mah-TSODE), which can mean a besieging tower, a bulwark, a hold, amunition, a net, or a snare, and we are left to our imaginations as to what sort of military equipment was used against this small town with very few men able to defend it. Since cities in those days were surrounded with heavy stone walls, a number of things were devised to knock down the walls or to gain entrance otherwise. Sometimes a ramp of soil and stones was constructed, which extended partway up the wall. Then the soldiers went up the ramp with a battering ram to knock down the walls. Other times a portable tower was used to come up to the walls and climb over. A walled city had a variety of defenses. They could pour boiling water or boiling oil upon the invaders. They could also hide behind a shield-like portable wall and shoot arrows at their enemies. The exact details of the military machines used against this small city are not necessary for us to understand this text because this is a parable and we will soon see the preacher’s point of the story. 15 Now there was found in it a poor wise man, and he by his wisdom delivered the city; yet no man remembered that same poor man. Again, we are left with no details. What was the advice of this wise but poor man? Scripture gives us a number of examples, such as the wise woman in 2 Samuel 20:14-22. The elderly King David was still mourning the death of his son, Absalom, who had turned the heart of the people away from David. Now David was back in power, but Sheba, who was related to the long dead King Saul, began another uprising against David. Joab, David’s chief military leader, chased Sheba and had him surrounded in the city of Abel Beth Maacah. Joab had his men build a siege ramp and go up with a battering ram to knock down the walls. Joab’s plan was to destroy the city in which Sheba had taken refuge. But a wise woman appealed to Joab not to destroy a city of Israel, so instead of ruining the entire city, the people

cut off the head of Sheba and threw it down and that was the end of the war against this small city in Israel. In Judges 9:53 another wise woman ended the siege against an entire city. This was a bloody war in which Abimelech had already destroyed the people of the city of Shechem. Some of the people escaped to a tower. Then Abimelech piled branches all around the tower and set them on fire, and over a thousand people died in the fire. When would all this awful war and murder come to an end? Then Abimelech went to another city where the people were once more taking refuge together in a tower. But, as he approached the tower, a wise woman threw a grinding stone down that reached its target—the head of Abimelech—and that was the end of him and of a gruesome war. We do not know what the wise words of the commoner in the preacher’s story were. All we know was that wise words saved the city, but rather than the wise man receiving great honor, he was soon forgotten. 16 Then said I, Wisdom is better than strength: nevertheless the poor man’s wisdom is despised, and his words are not heard. Here is the moral of the story with a rather anticlimactic ending. Although we read in Job of his wonderful faith—that he would see his Redeemer face-to-face, we often find in the Old Testament not such a clear understanding of life after death. If we did not have the further revelation, which tells us that God will someday come and make all things right, could we keep on believing in His justice and love, in spite of some of the injustices we see? As Christians, we are sure of the resurrection of our Savior and we know that we shall one day rise from the dead to live forever with Him. We know that Jesus will make all things right in the end, and so we put our trust in Him when things on earth are unfair. It is this trust that enables us to go on following the wise way. Even if the forces of corruption seem to be winning, we know that wisdom is better than power that is not restrained by goodness. The problem here is that without a theology of life beyond the grave, wise words may fall on deaf ears. Although King Solomon was the wisest man on earth, he could find no real profit in wisdom, because he had left the spiritual dimension of life aside. He had filled his life with many wives and concubines, and they had turned his heart from God (1 Kings 11:1-3). 17 The words of wise men are heard in quiet more than the cry of him that ruleth among fools. The Hebrew word for “fools” is keciyl (kes- EEL), and it can mean silly, stupid, or foolish. This verse suggests that not only did the ruler rule over fools, but that he himself was a fool. One can imagine that this ruler did not want to share his glory with a poor commoner, and so future wise advice for the city was lost. This is a common political situation. The ruler does only what benefits him- or herself, and through a loud and flashy style, people do not notice the ruler’s corruption. The phrase “heard in quiet” in verse 17 refers not to the manner in which the crowd received the words of wisdom, but to the way that they were delivered. In fact, this meaning comes through in other translations of this verse. The wise person is speaking in a gentle but sure voice. Meanwhile, the ruler among the fools shouts and pushes his way to get the attention of the people. In contrast to the foolish ruler of fools, the truly wise person gives advice in a quiet manner. Because he or she is counting on wisdom in words rather than dash and splash, the wise person speaks from a calm spirit within. 18 Wisdom is better than weapons of war: but one sinner destroyeth much good. We don’t know who this sinner is, but it has been suggested that he is the “ruler among fools.” If so, we see that he has rejected hearing any more advice from the wise commoner, and so we come to the result that the city will suffer for it. This verse makes us think of modernday peace negotiations in many countries. While the negotiator sits down, listens to both sides, and comes up with a solution that is agreeable to all sides, some hotheaded leader is sabotaging the peace process, and thus many people are slaughtered, women are raped, people are starving, and families are torn apart and displaced—all because some leader of one faction wants the fighting to continue. In the meantime, he is not even home in his own country, which is being torn up. He is living in comfort and peace somewhere else. But if we take this example closer to home, we can also see some church members who like to stir things up, and when they do, the cause of Christ is damaged and believers of all ages are made to stumble.

ONE FAITH FELLOWSHIP’S NUGGETS FOR THE SOUL HOW WILL YOU RESPOND?

When asked a question, the inquirer usually expects a response! Depending on the reply, evaluations and conclusions are made of the responder, as answers reflect one’s character, value and level of maturity! How we respond will prove to be for our advantage or disadvantage. A wholesome response comes after examining the facts, possible outcome and reacting in a positive fashion. God asked a question in 1 Kings 3: v. 5 KJV-In Gibeon the LORD appeared to Solomon in a dream by night: and God said, Ask what I shall give thee. Most of us would love to be asked that question! But what in truth would be our response to such a question? Would our request be for a bigger house, more money,

a flashier car, good health, peace of mind or joy? Blessings we pray for (peace of mind, joy and the like) are already outlined in the Word of God. They are just waiting for us to search the Scriptures and determine how to acquire them! How we respond to a “Blank Check” invitation is influenced by our development of the kind of love, devotion and concern for ourselves and others that God desires for us to have. The degree that we value ourselves and others will be revealed. A self-centered person will respond in a manner as only befits their advantage; with no regard for others. A self-centered person is only concerned with their welfare and how much they will acquire in the transaction. Certainly, this is not the mindset

DR. TONYA LEWIS

God desires that we have or is healthy for the overall society of mankind. A God-centered person would not only think of blessings to benefit themselves that are appropriate to consider, but also consider what they could acquire in a “Blank Check” invitation that would benefit

others. Solomon’s response to God’s question is reflected in the 9th verse of 1 Kings 3- NLT-Give me an understanding heart so that I can govern your people well and know the difference between right and wrong. For who by himself is able to govern this great people of yours?” V.10-And the speech pleased the Lord, that Solomon had asked this thing. Solomon had asked for not only what would enable him to serve God’s precious people, but for what would benefit them by him asking and receiving that request! God’s pleasure in Solomon’s response is reflected in V.11And God said unto him, Because thou hast asked this thing, and hast not asked for thyself long life; neither hast asked riches for thyself, nor hast asked the life of thine enemies; but hast asked for thyself understanding to discern judgment; V12-Behold, I have

done according to thy words: lo, I have given thee a wise and an understanding heart; so that there was none like thee before thee, neither after thee shall any arise like unto thee. V 13-NLT-And I will also give you what you did not ask for—riches and fame! No other king in all the world will be compared to you for the rest of your life! V. 14 NLT-And if you follow me and obey my decrees and my commands as your father, David, did, I will give you a long life.” Solomon received not only what he requested but also experienced God’s ability of what Paul reflects in Ephesians 3:20- the exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think. This is a vivid reminder to us not to be self-centered; only concerned about ourselves, for that mindset does not please God. In addition, we are reminded that when God blesses us, He

definitely provides enough for us to share with others and for us to still be blessed and benefited. It also reminds us that the Great God of the universe has awesome and unlimited resources that He DESIRES to share with us, IF WE CAN HANDLE THEM! Let’s ask Daddy-God to help us to love and be concerned for others as He desires for us to be! Let’s seek out Scriptures that instruct how we are to treat one another! Let’s commit to experiencing the Jesus’ Joy in our lives which is Jesus first, others second and you or ourselves last! Don’t be self-centered! FOOD FOR THOUGHT

Strategic Leadership Corner LIFE EXPERIENCES

DR. JOYCE HARRELL

How many times have we quoted Romans 8:28? “And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to His purpose.” Usually when we make this statement, we are grasping for something to hold on to, and we are trying to make sense of something negative that has happened around us or to us. I have learned to praise God through trials, because trials will

grow me/elevate me or expose areas where I am weak. Either way, the trial is for my good. Life’s experiences prepare us for our journey as a leader. If I have experienced abuse as a child, or was close to someone who experienced abuse, it may instill in me the desire to always promote the underdog, and make every effort to make sure no one is taken advantage of. Henry and Richard Blackaby in their book, “Spiritual Leadership,” states, Events beyond a person’s control can have the same effect as failures. They can either crush an aspiring leader or they can develop the character and resolve within the emerging leader that enables him to reach greater heights in the future. The Blackabys further stated that, “the key to

leadership development lies not in the experiences, whether good or bad, but in peoples’ response to those experiences. God can use adversity to build certain qualities deep within one’s character that could not be fully developed in any other way.” Dr. Joyce is a layperson under the leadership of Dr. Ticey Brown at the Mt. Tabor Missionary Baptist Church; where she serves as the Strategic Leadership Director. Dr. Joyce’s mission is to develop servant-leaders and enhance ministries within the Church; Dr. Joyce is available for one-on-one consultations, small group training sessions and workshops. by Andrea Andrews Those of us who have been blessed with a few years of life know that we are delicate and impressionable as human beings. The things we witness and the words spoken to us can make or break us if we are not strongly rooted in the Word of God. Our image is everything both spiritually and secularly. Whether we live

ordinary lives and make meager contributions to those around us or whether we have been placed beneath the “microscope” as politicians, celebrities or even celebrity pastors, it is important that we understand that we are being watched and our every word “leaned” on by those who God allows into our space. “Somebody’s always watching you”, my mother assured. While it is impossible to know whom we affect and how we affect them, imagine what life in review would look like if God revealed to us how our choices and decisions (our words) affected each and every human being we ever met in the course of a lifetime. What if He revealed what people thought or felt when they received an unexpected card in the mail with the sentiment

“Thinking of You” or how they felt on a birthday when the phone did not ring? Consider the revelation following a sermon preached which was self serving rather than yielding to the Spirit of God – a woman who needed to hear how much God loves her rather than a message on prosperity; one who walked away from the church and perhaps took her own life. As those who know Christ, our image IS everything because it must reflect His image. So, if given the opportunity to see your life in review, would it be pleasing unto God? Would it be pleasing unto you? Peace, Love & Blessings Your comments are welcomed at: theprocesslifecoaching@ g m a i l . c o m

12 Hours of Prayer at BEULAH B.C.

In times such as these, it is imperative that the people of God would engage in the process of prayer. With the economy on the decline, the justice system being corrupted and with there being a constant public attack on Godly principles, we indeed must pray. With this thought in mind, the Pastor and prayer coordination team of the Beulah Baptist Church would like to invite the entire Christian community of Los Angeles to join them as they engage in Twelve Hours of Prayer, to be held on Friday October 7, 2011 from 10:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. Beulah Baptist Church is located at 1454 E. 100th. want to study to show thyself approved unto God. SPECIAL INVITATION: We invite you to our Wednesday Night BTI Study from 7p-8p. Greater New Unity Baptist Church, Pastor Randy Allison; St. Thomas Baptist Church, Rev. Raymond Chandler; Calvary Baptist Church, Pastor Virgil Jones; New Revelation Baptist Church, Pastor William Turner; and Union Baptist Church, Pastor Milton Marshall. Well now, who chose Dr. Hardwick for his vocation as a leader/pastor? Glad you asked. He was chosen by God to become the under shepherd to lead God’s people, which is us the church, Praises of Zion. He over-sees, leads, guides, protects, teaches, trains, counsels, he preaches to, he prays with and for us, and he feeds God’s flock with spiritual food, which is the Word of God. There is no doubt in our minds that our Pastor is a leader/pastor according to God’s heart: a man chosen and called by God; anointed and appointed by God; sent by God to lead and rule well; a man who studies the Word of God so that he may represent Christ in his preaching, teaching, and daily living…but most of all Pastor Hardwick is a man who loves God, and who loves God’s people. He is a husband to one wife…Mrs. Thelma Hardwick, our beautiful and radiant First Lady, who has been by his side every step of the way, praying with him,, encouraging him, and lending a helping hand when needed. It is also very important for Pastor Hardwick to remember who called him, and the importance of his service must forever be in the fore-front

of his mind. Being a Pastor is an honor and a privilege and those who are chosen to take up this position in the church must be a special breed. The Pastor is the head of a spiritual hospital, where the sick come for healing and the hungry come to be fed. The eternal lives of human beings lay in the balances. The Pastor is responsible and accountable to God for what he has been given charge over (1Corinthians . John 15:16 “ye have not chosen me, but I have chosen you, and ordained you, that you should go and bring forth fruit.” (1 Corinthians 12:28-29, Ephesians 4:11). Pastor Hardwick’s sole purpose is to take care of his flock. He is in the pulpit, and he also gets out in his community, to feed the poor, knock on the doors, and travel the various highways and byways, to those who are not attending church. He tries to be as visible and accessible, as is humanly possible for those who have need of him. Therefore, we the members truly thank God, for in Ephesians 4:11-13 He says. “And he gave some apostles, and some prophets, and some evangelists, and some pastors…”, but we know that He gave Pastor Hardwick and Mrs. Hardwick to Praises of Zion. Hallelujah, and thank God. To God be the glory! Dr. J. Benjamin Hardwick, Senior Pastor; Sister Faye Williams, Appreciation Services Chair-Person; and Sister Clarice Holmes, Reporter.

5TH APPRECIATION SERVICES HONORING PASTOR & MRS. MICHAEL L. WHITE We the members of the Pleasant View Missionary Baptist Church cordially invite you to join us as we honor Pastor & Mrs. Michael L. White on their 5th Appreciation Service. Our celebrations will take place on Sunday October 9th at 3:30 pm, Friday October 14th at 7:00 pm and Sunday October 16th at 3:30pm. Christ (Matthew 28:18-20) and it is with great pleasure that we honor them during this special occasion. Pastor & Mrs. White exemplify the true meaning of Christianity through their personal relationship with Christ, lifestyles of dedicated ministry, service through love, and motto to: Pray Until Something Happens (P.U.S.H).
