Greater Starlight M.B.C. Honoring Dr. & Mrs. Prentiss E. Lewis

DR. & MRS. PRENTISS E. LEWIS HONOREES

The Greater Starlight M.B.C. family invites you to come and celebrate with us in our Pastor and Wife’s 20th Appreciation services honoring two of God’s loyal and dedicated. Our theme is “A Pastor For All Seasons” (II Timothy 4:1-5): I charge you therefore before God and the Lord Jesus Christ, who will judge the living and the dead at His appearing and His Kingdom: Preach the Word! Be ready in season and out of season. Convince, rebuke, exhort, with all longsuffering and teaching. For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine, but according to their own desires,

because they have itching ears, they will heap up for themselves teachers; and they will turn their ears away from the truth, and be turned aside to fables. But you be watchful in all things, endure afflictions, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry. Our celebration will commence Sunday, October 2, 2011 at 4:00p.m. Celebrating with us in these services will be: October 2, 2011 – Tabernacle of Praise B.C. – Pastor Roderick O. Walker and Curry Temple CME Church – Pastor Byron L. Smith, Sr. October 9, 2011 – Greater New Hope – Pastor Greg Moore; October 16, 2011 – Greater True Light B.C. – Pastor E. Wayne Gaddis, United Christian B.C. – Pastor Leroy Haley and Tabernacle Community B.C. – Pastor Wilbur Lewis; October 23, Continued On Page 4

FRIENDLYWILL MISSIONARY BAPTIST CHURCH Celebrates 3000 Sundays of Praise & Worship

PASTOR CHEZ LISTER HOST

The date was Sunday, April 18, 1954, Easter Sunday Morning. It was on this day, that our eternal all powerful true and living God, ordained, anointed, and commissioned, our late founder, Pastor Lorea Johnson and a small

group of born again believers to be His witnesses to the world and He called them FRIENDLYWILL. From that day, The Friendlywill Missionary Baptist Church by the grace, mercy and power of God, has gathered together every Sunday without fail, to worship and praise our King of Kings, and Lord of Lords, Jesus Christ. We honor and glorify God in recognition of our humble beginnings and our very first worship service. As we continue to testify and stand as witnesses for Jesus Christ as a church body, we are approaching a monumental milestone in our church history. On Sunday, October 9, 2011, we

will reach the milestone of 3,000 consecutive Sunday morning worship services for the Friendlywill Missionary Baptist Church. For this reason and upon reaching this great milestone by the grace of God, we pause and turn towards our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, to render our praises and thanksgiving unto Him for bringing us safely this far. Our theme for this grand occasion, “Lord You Brought Us From A Mighty Long Way” Joshua 24:17. In honor of this day of celebration, we are

PASTOR JOE SMITH PILGRIMS HOPE

When a child turns two, the saying is usually, “terrible two’s”; however, we, the Metro Family are exclaiming, “It’s only been two years?”, as we stand in awe at what God has done through our leader, PASTOR ELTON LAMAR JOHNSON! No one but a Man of God following after God could accomplish in this ministry what most churches have yet to even chip at. Therefore, our Pastor’s Care Team and the Anniversary Committee decree, “Let the celebration continue!” We are at the half-way mark! Each service has been uniquely inspiring, therefore, TODAY, October 9th, we anxiously await the fellowship with Pastor Joe Smith & Pilgrim’s Hope Bible

Church, and Bishop Johnny Withers & Unity Christian Fellowship; October 16th, we will pinnacle with Pastor Wayne Chaney, Jr. & Antioch Church of Long Beach, CA, Pastor Kevin Stafford & Zion Baptist Evangelistic Temple, and Pastor Anthony Smith & Jericho B.C. All services will begin at 3:30 in the afternoon. (*first names listed are speakers for the afternoon). We boast in the Lord at not just the structural enhancements to Metro: new ceiling, new air conditioning/heating unit, totally remodeled sanctuary, fellowship hall, and added minister’s lounge (more projects underway), but we more so boast at the spiritual changes in this body of believers which many had disregarded, dismissed, and disengaged. Don the celebratory colors for the day of purple & gray, and catch the vision at 4200 South Hooper Avenue in the City of the Angels. Sis. Sheila Hardy, PCT Prez.; Rev. Elton L. Johnson, Pastor; “I’m Wright About It” exclusively for Metro B.C. reporting.

MOTHER FANCES DAVISON IN MEMORIUM

On the evening of September 28, 2011, God commissioned a Sweet Chariot to swing low, to stop and give our precious Mother Davison a ride....it was a band of angels that came after “Mama Dee”, and in the company of loving family, friends and her beloved Pastor, she bid us all adieu, and quietly mounted that chariot, left South Central L.A and went on to glory.... Mother Frances Davison was born on March 10 in the town of Alexandria, Louisiana, the eldest of 9 siblings. She accepted Jesus

Christ as her Lord and Savior and was baptized and attended the Spring Hill Baptist Church in Alexandria. She graduated from Galveston High School in Texas, fell in love with and married the love of her life, the late Lee Roy Davison in Flagstaff Arizona, and had a total of 5 children. They relocated to Los Angeles in 1972, and following our church commandment, Mother Davison joined the Greater New Unity Baptist Church in 1974 under the Pastoral Leadership of the late, great Dr. H.P. Rachal and continued under the present Pastoral Leadership of Rev. Randy Allison Jr. Mother Davison was a loyal, faithful, and devoted member of Greater New Unity, she and her family, for nearly 38 years! She was a long-time Senior Usher, served on the Deaconess Board and

the Pastor’s Aide, and was a member and the President of the Mother’s Board for many years. Mother Davison supported every ministry of the church with all that she had. She especially helped and assisted the Youth and the Young Adults and really enjoyed encouraging us to be diligent in Kingdom Building. Moreover, Mother Davison had a Personal relationship with Jesus, and let her light shine so the world could see! She was a praying Mom and Granny, and raised not only her children but her Grandchildren and others who were of no blood relation! Mother Davison loved her family with a passion that is unmatched! She also loved her extended family, and her neighborhood family! She loved good toe tapping quartet music, watching MADEA plays and movies, THE STORIES,

drinking coffee, sending people to the store, eating good Southern soul food and especially seafood and gumbo, talking and laughing with friends, “dressing out” for church, and being together with her humungous family at any event. Mother Davison’s house was the “Haven house” of the community, and all were always welcome to come, stay a while, and get a good meal and a warm smile and encouragement from “Granny”. We thank and praise God for sending “Mama D” our way. She leaves to cherish some precious memories 5 children; Gloria Baker, Frances Davison, Yolanda Davison, Kenny Roy and Dwayne Davison, 27 Grandchildren, 22 Great Grandchildren, 3 brothers, 3 Continued On Page 6

October 16 -- Bible Study Guide 7 away evil from thy flesh: for childhood and youth are vanity. 12:1 Remember now thy Creator in the days of thy youth, while the evil days come not, nor the years draw nigh, when thou shalt say, I have no pleasure in them; 2 While the sun, or the light, or the moon, or the stars, be not darkened, nor the clouds return after the rain: 3 In the day when the keepers of the house shall tremble, and the strong men shall bow themselves, and the grinders cease because they are few, and those that look out of the windows be darkened, 4 And the doors shall be shut in the streets, when the sound of the grinding is low, and he shall rise up at the voice of the bird, and all the daughters of musick shall be brought low; 5 Also when they shall be afraid of that which is high, and fears shall be in the way, and the almond tree shall flourish, and the grasshopper shall be a burden, and desire shall fail: because man goeth to his long home, and the mourners go about the streets: 6 Or ever the silver cord be loosed, or the golden bowl be broken, or the pitcher be broken at the fountain, or the wheel broken at the cistern. 7 Then shall the dust return to the earth as it was: and the spirit shall return unto God who gave it. 12:13 Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man.

IN FOCUS One of the things that Rev. Smith loved most about being a pastor was the many opportunities he had to talk with older people—people in their 70s, 80s, and 90s. Rev. Smith smiled as he thought about the lessons that could be learned from the lives of these older believers. Mature Christians who have lived seven, eight, or nine decades tend to have learned to distinguish between what is urgent and what is important. They have learned what things need attention and what things need to be overlooked. They have learned to avoid making mountains out of molehills, and they seem never to be in a hurry. They have a wisdom garnered from a sober study of having experienced life at close range. Their years of experience and seasoned perspectives were sometimes amusing, but always informative. Rev. Smith’s reflection also expressed the mood and concern of Ecclesiastes 11:7-12:8. The question about choice is a sobering one. The days of youth are fleeting. With the passing of each year comes some change in our bodies and in our environment. The aging process and change are inevitable. Like birth, childhood, and youth, the effects of advanced aging, change, and death are an inescapable part of life. THE PEOPLE, PLACES AND TIMES The Nature of Life and the Certainty of Death. Some realities about people, places, and times never change. Wise, God-fearing people in every generation have known that life is fragile, brief, and not without urgency. Consequently, the counsel necessary to pursue a meaningful life is relevant for all people, in every place, at all times. To make the most of one’s youth, before the difficult days of old age and death arrive, was good counsel during Old Testament times, and it continues to be good counsel for life in the 21st century. BACKGROUND The writer of Ecclesiastes had a deep and abiding desire to make sense out of life. He recognized that, except for death, judgment, and the fleeting days of youth, there were only a few things he could truly depend upon. Nothing seemed to be permanent. The effects of aging were overwhelmingly obvious. He also recognized that God’s ways did not always meet his expectations. Consequently, his search for meaning in life was haunted by an anxiety that caused him to view human striving as “vanity” and a “chasing after the wind.” In an attempt to find a way out of this dilemma, he resorts to reason. Through reason he concludes, as did the agnostics of his day, that life and human striving are indeed futile. But, unlike the agnostics, he added that life is futile only for those who disregard God. Life is futile only when God and the acknowledgment of His rule are left out of the picture. Even reason is curtailed when it fails to recognize God, His gifts, and His purposes. While reason is good, it cannot answer all of life’s questions and contradictions. The best reasoning will never replace God. IN DEPTH 1. Rejoice in Life (Ecclesiastes 11:9-10) One of the greatest challenges of life is to truly live while we are alive. God wants us to enjoy life. Verse 9 also encourages readers to take their desires seriously and to act upon them: “Rejoice, O young man, in thy youth; and let thy heart cheer thee in the days of thy youth, and walk in the ways of thine heart, and in the sight of thine eyes . . .” (v. 9). The enjoyment of life and the pursuit of one’s desires, however, are to be governed and managed by a keen awareness of one’s accountability to God: “but know thou, that for all these things God will bring thee into judgment” (from v. 9). The use of the word judgment in verse 9 should be understood in the light of the Olympian athlete who trains diligently, and after giving his or her all in competition, awaits expectantly to receive the appropriate recognition and reward. In biblical thought, judgment is not a moment to be feared; rather, it is a crowning moment to be welcomed by all those who have spent their days celebrating life and pursuing the desires of their heart in ways that honor God. Verse 10 is a transitional sentence that helps set the stage to consider the brevity of life and the urgency to employ one’s youthful years wisely as well. 2. Honor God (12:1) The motivation to enjoy life and to pursue the heart’s desires is sparked, in part, by the brevity of life and fleetingness of youth. Therefore, one’s youthful days should be taken seriously, and the opportunities presented during youth should be promptly acted upon out of reverence for God. This is not to suggest, however, that opportunities vanish with one’s aging years. Quite the contrary, just as there are opportunities available to youth, opportunities are also available throughout one’s life. What is at stake, however, is the potential impact of the aging process upon one’s capacity to maximize life’s pleasures. According to the Ecclesiastical writer, youth is the optimum time to make oneself available to God and thereby maximize responsibly the pleasures God would have us enjoy. “Enjoy life’s pleasures while you’re young” is often stated with flippancy, but it resonates with the Ecclesiastical perspective. The only caution is

NEWS@RAISETHEPRAISENEWS.NET

that one’s involvement in life’s pleasures would honor God, our Creator (12:1). 3. Live Vigilantly (vv. 2-5) The book of Ecclesiastes offers no illusions about the potential effects of the aging process and the certainty of death. If one continues to live, aging and death are imminent and inescapable. Generally speaking, verses 2 through 5 seem to comprise a soliloquy about the effects of aging and the inevitability of death. Exactly how the specific images referenced in these verses are to be interpreted is open for debate. What is clear, however, is the emphasis on the progressive nature of the decay of living things, which eventually leads to death. Where human life is concerned, the aging process affects, in a variety of ways, one’s capacity to function. Ultimately, the aging process leads to death and “man goes to his eternal home and mourners go about the streets” (v. 5, NIV). The message of verses 2 through 5 is intended to give urgency to the invitation of verse 1 to “remember . . . thy Creator in the days of thy youth.” In other words, we are to begin early in life to enjoy life by living vigilantly, “soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world” (from Titus 2:12). 4. Accept Death as a Normal Part of Life (vv. 6-7) There is a sense that human death is like the destruction of everyday objects that have ceased to be useful. A severed silver cord, a broken golden bowl, a shattered pitcher, and a broken wheel or pulley— whether used individually or collectively as a vessel suspended by a rope from a pulley over a dried-up abandoned well—are all metaphorical images of death. Usually, it is understood and accepted that each of these objects used to draw water from a well do not last forever. Moreover, wells sometimes dry up and become useless. This, too, is understandable and accepted as par for the course of life. So also should it be where human death is concerned. Death is a normal part of life. While its coming may occasion grief, God has ordained its place in the unfolding mystery of His ways. Since God has ordained death, we can honor Him by accepting what He has ordained. 5. The Duty of Humankind (v. 13) Now we come to the end of the book of Ecclesiastes and the author gives us his conclusion. The “fear of the Lord” is reverential awe of Him. In our efforts to make the Christian faith more palatable to the modern mind, we have soft-pedaled fear of the Lord. We need to remember who God is—the Creator of the universe and all that is in it. He is the one who holds our eternal future in His hands. No matter what else this world holds out to us, we need to remember that God is the Almighty God. The order of the original Hebrew words is “God you shall fear.” The conclusion of the book begins with the word “God.” The evidence of our wholehearted belief in Him should be obedience to all His commands. MORE LIGHT ON TEXT Ecclesiastes 11:9-12:7, 13 9 Rejoice, O young man, in thy youth; and let thy heart cheer thee in the days of thy youth, and walk in the ways of thine heart, and in the sight of thine eyes: but know thou, that for all these things God will bring thee into judgment. Verse 9 expresses the advice an older person might give to a younger person: “Make the most of your younger years.” On the surface, it appears that Solomon is encouraging young men to live a life of folly. The recommendations to, for instance, “walk in the ways of [your] heart” seem like an invitation for young people to go out and do whatever they’d like to do. However, when our wants are attuned to what God wants from us, then what we want to do will be what He wants us to do. Solomon also reminds us that in the end “all these things God will bring. . . into judgment.” Someday all our words and works will be weighed by God’s eternal evaluation. 10 Therefore remove sorrow from thy heart, and put away evil from thy flesh: for childhood and youth are vanity. In light of God’s future judgment, Solomon advised youth to get rid of grief and avoid sin (or evil). Some teens and young adults are impatient or lack self-control. Others may focus on pleasing themselves and dislike anything that contradicts their way of thinking. Solomon reminds us that youth is fleeting, and although we should enjoy life during our youth, we should live in a way that glorifies God. 12:1 Remember now thy Creator in the days of thy youth, while the evil days come not, nor the years draw nigh, when thou shalt say, I have no pleasure in them; Since God is our Creator, we’d better follow His Word if we want our lives to run as smoothly as possible. God’s manual of operations tells us how to get the maximum benefits out of this life we are living. (In Deuteronomy 8:18 and Psalm 119:55 the word remember is another form of saying we should keep God’s Word or “law.”) The phrase “days of thy youth” in Ecclesiastes 12:1 is literally translated from Hebrew as “days of black hair,” meaning before your hair turns gray. 2 While the sun, or the light, or the moon, or the stars, be not darkened, nor the clouds return after the rain: In verse 2, the deteriorating days of old age are depicted as a cloudy period. Since those dark days inevitably come, the writer urges the readers to remember their Creator “before the sun and the light and the moon and the stars grow dark, and the clouds return after the rain” (v. 2, NIV). 3 In the day when the keepers of the house shall

tremble, and the strong men shall bow themselves, and the grinders cease because they are few, and those that look out of the windows be darkened, Modern people have humorously referred to the five B’s of old age: baldness, bifocals, bridges, bulges, and bunions. However, here, we should proceed with care as we seek to examine the correlation between each picture and some failing frailty in an aging person’s body. The metaphors in verses 3 through 8 are hard to understand without the help of Bible scholars. But even the scholars are not in agreement about what each word picture means. The “keepers [or guardians] of the house” in this verse may refer to muscular arms that are now weakening and beginning to tremble. The “strong men” may refer to the once-strong legs that are beginning to become feeble (compare Song of Solomon 5:15). In the era when this text was written, women regularly did the grinding of the grain for bread baking on a grindstone. The reference to “grinders” probably portrays an older person’s loss of teeth. The fourth picture in Ecclesiastes 12:3, “those that look out of the windows,” may refer to dimming eyesight often associated with old age. Our eyes are like windows in a house that look out on the world. 4 And the doors shall be shut in the streets, when the sound of the grinding is low, and he shall rise up at the voice of the bird, and all the daughters of musick shall be brought low; The closed doors to the house in verse 4 could present a picture of becoming so hard of hearing that we feel like the world is being shut out, or since in Hebrew the expression refers to “double doors,” it might refer to a person’s jaws, which don’t always express what he or she would like to remember. “The sound of the grinding is low” indicates that the older person no longer hears sounds as distinctly as in younger years. Paradoxically, even though elderly individuals may not hear what others are talking about, they may wake up extraordinarily early at the mere twittering of a bird outside (which may be the meaning of “rise up at the voice of the bird”). The “daughters of musick” is perhaps a reference to songs. In other words, it’s as though a father is the musicmaker and the daughter is the song. So the phrase “all the daughters of musick shall be brought low” could indicate a time when an older person may complain of being unable to hear the words of a song. 5 Also when they shall be afraid of that which is high, and fears shall be in the way, and the almond tree shall flourish, and the grasshopper shall be a burden, and desire shall fail: because man goeth to his long home, and the mourners go about the streets: Verse 5 is difficult for the scholars to translate. The first part undoubtedly refers to the aging individual’s increasing fears and difficulty with heights. The almond tree has pretty pink petals at first, but then it bursts into an all-white color, similar to the change experienced by a white-haired elderly individual. “The grasshopper shall be a burden” is translated in the NIV as “the grasshopper drags himself along,” bringing to mind the slow and stiff walk of an elderly person. The next phrase says that “desire shall fail.” The Hebrew word abiyownah (ab-ee-yo-NAW) may refer to a caperberry, which many considered in the ancient Middle East to be an aphrodisiac or love potion. This is why the King James translators rendered it “desire.” The aging person’s appetites (whether for sex or food) diminish. In fact, the last part of this verse almost sounds like the pallbearers are parading outside in the street, rehearsing for the funeral! 6 Or ever the silver cord be loosed, or the golden bowl be broken, or the pitcher be broken at the fountain, or the wheel broken at the cistern. Verse 6 may be painting two pictures: (1) a lamp with oil and (2) a well with water. Lamps during biblical times usually looked like clay dishes with a wick sitting in oil in the dish. The wick would stay lit as long as oil was present. The author may have pictured a “golden [lamp] bowl” hung on a “silver cord” that was broken or smashed. As a result, the lamp became useless. A well (or cistern) during biblical times might have had a “wheel” that held an attached bucket or “pitcher” to a rope that went down into the well to obtain water below. If the bucket were to strike the well’s side, it might also become broken. These images refer to the end of life. Just as useful devices and their parts eventually wear out, our lives eventually come to an end. 7 Then shall the dust return to the earth as it was: and the spirit shall return unto God who gave it. “Dust to dust and ashes to ashes”

is the familiar refrain at funerals. In verse 7, the “dust” of our bodies returns to the dust of the earth, and “the spirit” returns to God who gave us breath and life. In Genesis 2:7, God’s formation of Adam consisted of a dust body and divine breath (spirit). The primary emphasis on “spirit” (Heb. ruwach, ROO-akh) here refers to how God as the source of life keeps all of us alive, and perhaps secondly to our composition as humans. Regarding the latter, what this means for Christians is that our physical/ material bodies go down to the grave at death, but the immaterial spiritual aspect of us goes to be with God until the final resurrection. Those that do not know God are in a sleep-like state until they are resurrected at the final judgment. The day will come when we all must stand before God. Are you prepared to meet God? You can be ready by believing that Christ died for you and receiving God’s gift of eternal life and becoming part of His family. 12:13 Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man. Various biblical scholars have speculated on the theme of the book of Ecclesiastes, but in this verse, we have the author’s own word on this. Cowph (sofe), the Hebrew for “conclusion,” implies this is more than simply the end—it is the conclusion based on all that is written in Ecclesiastes. Ecclesiastes contains the meditations of a man who has lived to see old age. He has seen much that does not seem to make sense, but in the end he realizes all that really matters is that we fear the Lord and obey Him. The Hebrew word for “fear” is yare' (yahRAY). In addition to fear, it means “to revere” or “to dread,” so we definitely see that we should tremble when we think about disobeying Almighty God. The fear of God opens the possibility of a relationship with Him. We see His awesomeness and His holiness. We realize that we are sinful beings unable to enter into His presence, even though we want to more than anything else. We find ourselves

being drawn to Him, but how can we come before Him? The writer of Hebrews tells us that because Jesus sacrificed Himself on the Cross, we are able to enter the presence of God (10:19-22). And because of His sacrifice for us, we desire to please Him and obey Him. The Hebrew for “man” in Ecclesiastes 12:13 is 'adam (a-DAWM), the same word as the name of the first man—Adam. But in this case it simply refers to a human being. Whether male or female, our primary task in life is to bow down in reverence before God and obey Him.

ONE FAITH FELLOWSHIP’S NUGGETS FOR THE SOUL WHY GOD, WHY? Life is filled with the asking and answering of questions! Sometimes very proper and appropriate questions are asked, while other times one wonders how people think that their question is appropriate and THEN form their lips to ask such a question! Answers to certain questions is automatically no, while to other questions the response should be an un-hesitant yes! We also question our Great, Loving and Faithful God, with such questions as; “Why was I born?”, “Why wasn’t I born with “gifts and talents” which seem to be “better” than the ones I received?” “Why must I experience pain, tears, trials and tribulations?” “Why can’t I be

like “them”?” We ask questions that DEFINITELY imply that we DON’T AGREE WITH GOD ABOUT HIS DECISIONS CONCERNING OUR LIVES! God does not mind us asking Him questions; however as it is with our natural parents, we must be mindful of how we question HIM, careful to be humble and reverent! God longs to fellowship with us, to commune with us, to walk and talk to us as illustrated in Genesis 3:8-And they heard the voice of the LORD God walking in the garden in the cool of the day: and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God amongst the trees of the garden. V.9- And the LORD God called unto Adam, and said unto him, Where [art]

OUR INDIVIDUAL LIVES! God poses some questions to us in Isaiah 45:9- NLT-”What sorrow awaits those who argue with their Creator. Does a clay pot argue with its maker? Does the clay dispute with the one who shapes it, saying, ‘Stop, you’re doing it wrong?’ Does the pot exclaim, ‘How clumsy can you be?’ Recognizing that God is the Creator of all things; should make us hesitant to oppose Him (do battle or be in conflict with Him) in any way! It is inappropriate for the clay to say to him who forms it, “What are you making?” v. 10-NLT-How terrible it would be if a newborn baby said to its father, ‘Why was I born?’ or if it said to its mother, ‘Why did you make me this way?’” v. 11- NLTThis is what the LORD says— the Holy One of Israel and your Creator: “Do you question what I do for my children? Do you give

me orders about the work of my hands? We simply need to trust that God is in charge and has an awesome plan for our lives! We simply need to embrace and mediate on: Isaiah 43:2- New Living Transaction-When you go through deep waters, I will be with you. When you go through rivers of difficulty, you will not drown. When you walk through the fire of oppression, you will not be burned up; the flames will not consume you. When we are challenged with questions about our lives, let us remember what Jesus said in Matthew 11:28-29 “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. Also John 14:27 “I am leaving you with a gift—peace of mind and heart. And the peace I give

is a gift the world cannot give. So don’t be troubled or afraid. God not only oversaw our birth but continues to oversee our existence and guides everything concerning our lives! Psalm 5:11But let all who take refuge in You rejoice; let them sing joyful praises forever. Spread Your protection over them, that all who love Your name may be filled with joy. Let us recommit to trust God and to replace our questions with trust and praise. FOOD FOR THOUGHT

Strategic Leadership Corner CRITICISM

DR. JOYCE HARRELL

Sometimes things happen in our churches that we don’t understand and if we are not careful, we will begin to criticize the action. I have learned that nothing goes on in the church that the Pastor has not set in place or has approved; after all he is the Watchman. How absurd for us to want to be given account of what is going on. We are acting as if we are owners and not slaves, when did slaves obtain rights? When we criticize or put down what is going on in

our churches, we are basically saying that the pastor does not know what he is doing, and that is a dangerous move. We can look at the case of Miriam when she chose to question what Moses was doing and she was afflicted with leprosy. God is not pleased when we attempt to second guess the man He has placed over us. Miriam’s affliction came about because of her pride and insubordination to the power of God working through Moses, and thus she became afflicted with a disfiguring skin disease. It was of short duration, but long enough for her to reflect on the error she made in criticizing the instrument of the Lord, which was Moses. Don’t allow Satan to get you caught up in thinking you have rights and therefore,

you feel you have the right to express your opinion and demand an answer. Slaves have no rights or opinions they just do what they are told to do. We need to fall in line and praise God for the opportunity to serve, and leave the results to Him. Dr. Joyce is a layperson under the leadership of Dr. Ticey Brown at the Mt. Tabor Missionary Baptist Church; where she serves as the Strategic Leadership Director. Dr. Joyce’s mission is to develop servant-leaders and enhance ministries within the Church; Dr. Joyce is available for one-on-one consultations, small group training sessions and workshops. The Cracked Pail A farm girl hauled water from the creek She carried two pails - one had a leak Her shoulders bore a heavy wooden yoke On each end the pails dangled from a rope

The right side of the road where the good pail passed Was barren without life and only yielded dead grass But the left side pail so often disregarded Gave life to a ground once brokenhearted

The pail on the right was the sturdy pail And never dripped water along the trail But the pail on the left spilled the precious fluid It was a worn out pail and the farm girl knew it

One day the cracked pail so worn and tattered Fell upon a rock and all the pieces scattered The farm girl replaced it with a new sturdy pail And all the flowers died along the trail

She continued with both buckets on her water trips The sturdy one and the other with the careless drip Suddenly one morning as the story is told Flowers bloomed on the left side of the road

So don’t feel bad if people call you names Nor feel worthless and walk in shame God uses cracked pails to fulfill his needs The Kingdom of God is built with miracle seeds
