BAPTIST MINISTERS CONFERENCE ELECTS NEW PRESIDENT

I want to make it clear, I did not run against anybody, I ran for the office, Me and Dr. Marvis Davis, I want to be clear, we are brothers, we have been brothers and we shall be brothers. The election was held today, but our work begins tomorrow

As Pastors from all over the city gathered at McCoy Memorial Baptist Church in Los Angeles, for the Baptist Minister’s Conference for their regular weekly meeting on Monday, January 7, 2013, you could not help but feel the anticipation of what was to come later in the afternoon, because this was not just another regular meeting. What was to happen at this meeting

was the election for the President (The term for the President of the Baptist Ministers Conference of Los Angeles and Vicinity is 3 years, with a maximum of 6 years to serve). President Marvis L. Davis, the Senior Pastor of Bethel Missionary Baptist Church in Los Angeles, had completed his 1st 3 year term and the vote was about to happen. Running against Dr. Marvis Davis, was Pastor Xavier L. Thompson, Senior Pastor of Southern Missionary Baptist Church in Los Angeles. It started off as usual with the devotional period with Rev. Kelly delivering the devotional sermon, yet there was constant rush of Pastor’s and ministers waiting in line to meet the deadline of registration so that their vote would count. You could feel the anticipation in the air.

As the conference was called to order. Evangelist Manual Scott Jr. Preached an inspiring message entitled “Yes He Is”. After the message, the election committee, cleared the sanctuary of all non-member of the Baptist Ministers conference and then verified every Pastor and minister to ensure they were qualified to vote. The vote took place and the results were 118-69 for Pastor Xavier Thompson. With a thunderous applause, all Pastors and Ministers were encouraged to stay the course. Dr. Marvis L. Davis stood and thanked the Conference, the Election committee, the host church and Pastor Xavier Thompson for a wonderful campaign, he also asked that there be “no splits, no divisions among us”. Dr. Davis also stated that he will give his support to the

Baptist Ministers conference and will do everything within his power to make sure that it is a smooth transition. Dr. Davis said that serving has not been a duty it has been a delight, it has not been a burden it has been a blessing.

Bishop Johnny Withers, Pastor of Unity Christian Fellowship in Compton stated “I believe that Pastor Xavier Thompson is going to be one that will lead us into the future as well as give us insight as relates to ministry in the 21st Century. The power of

his leadership is the power of unity that will actually bring us together. I believe that between the older generation and the younger generation, he is the perfect bridge that will bring insight for us younger preachers to learn how to respect the sages of our time and likewise give the sages of our time and understanding to realize the power of transition.”

ONE FAITH FELLOWSHIP’S NUGGETS FOR THE SOUL THE ASSURANCE FOR THIS NEW YEAR The Good Lord has seen fit to allow us to live on into a new year! His desire is for us to reflect on His faithfulness in the past so that it will foster peace for the present. Daddy’s desire is that we increasingly submit this year to His grand will for our lives. It is His desire to reveal Himself even more to us so that no matter what we experience, we will yet have the joy of the Lord. Oh, if we could only understand His great love for us, it would bring an amazing peace and assurance to our lives and force us to believe in Daddy God’s commitment to us. If we could only feel what Jesus felt as He gave His life for

us, we would be more inclined to embrace His faithfulness to our lives. When we consider the many difficulties we have already experienced that we did not think we would make it through in spite of adversity, we should make the unmovable, assured and beyond all doubt declaration of faith that for this year we can yet trust and depend on Daddy-God to care for us. With the nearing of the end of time, the days of this year will be more intense than the days of the previous years. There will be days we will laugh, cry, experience joys and sorrow, have faith so great we will be able to walk on

water and raise the dead and other days when we will need faith enough to roll out of bed and be willing to face another day. We will have loved ones who will pass, making their eternal transition to Heaven or

Hell. There will be days when we will know beyond a shadow of a doubt that we are loved and other days when we will wonder if we are loved! There will be days when the solutions to our needs will manifest and other days when we will wonder what we will do. There will be days of wellness of body, mind and soul and other days when we will be severely challenged. However, for each day we have been assured by our Great God’s love that He has prepared us for the experiences of “this day”, no matter what they will be! This is why it is with blessed assurance that we CAN CHOOSE to stand firm

in faith believing and knowing that God is with us, never, never, never, never to leave us alone. Our greatest expression of faith and love to Him is to be the people described in Psalms 1:3-And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water… “A tree by a river has a continual source of water. It will never wither away, because it is always getting what it needs. If we are constantly needy, it may be worth examining if we are planted by the rivers of water or not.” (Guzik) We must be determined not to allow anyContinued On Page 14

The Abundance of Green in 2013

The fore-stated is our mantra this year at the Watered Garden Fellowship. Just today I was at the bank and the terminal screen read, “Help Us Stay Green”. It further read, “You are saving time and paper with this transaction.” Going green is simply about best managing the earth’s resources. Businesses are being intentional about efficiency, functionality and productivity. The Body of Christ should be the leader of this mindset as it pertains to our existence in the earth realm both corporately and individually. We should be committed to giving God a great

return on his investment of life to us. As we have crossed over the threshold of a new year, don’t allow superstitious concepts about the number thirteen to pervade your psyche. There is nothing unfortunate, unlucky, or undesirable about this thirteenth year of the new millennium for believers. As a matter of fact, it’s a year of UNMERRITED favor. This is the year to fortify our trust in the Lord. Jeremiah 17:7 indicates that trusting in the Lord is the key to a green life. A green life is a nourished life, nurtured life, fruitful life, and a productive life. Green is a color that

communicates not only that something is alive but that it is well. All is well. In spite of the tragedies, catastrophes and calamities of today our God is faithful. His mercies endureth forever. His compassions fail not and his love is steadfast. As he lamented and was sorrowful, the prophet Jeremiah stated that the thing that served as the catalyst for him having hope was recalling to his own mind God’s mercies and compassions. Nothing will ever change anything about these attributes of God our father. So in the context of our mantra we can say of Abba Father’s love - it’s EVERGREEN.

Authority in Conflict

One of the most grievous results of disunity in the Church through insubmissiveness is that the members of the Body become vulnerable to attack from the powers of darkness. This is much more prevalent than most of us realise. Peter exhorts: Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour.’ Paul exhorts: Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.2 What is very significant in both these Scriptures which deal with spiritual conflict, is that the context concerns mutual submission. When we are not thus submitted we are out of our God-ordained setting and in some way dislocated from fellowship. It is then that we become prey for our adversary. Under the covering of Headship in the Body we are

protected and secure. This is essentially because Christ Himself is the Head over all things to the Church. Since that Headship is to the Church, this means He has vested its authority in the Church. We cannot know the full authority of Christ our Head if we are dislocated from true fellowship in the Body. Even when we are alone, as missionaries, for instance, often are, if we know our setting in the Body and submit, relate and function there, then we are not disfellowshipped from the vital unity of the Spirit. 1 Peter 5:8. Eph. 6:11, 12. It is on the basis of our submitting one to another in the fear of God that we are exhorted to resist our adversary steadfast in the faith. On the same basis we are exhorted: Be strong in the Lord and in the power of his might. Put on the whole armour of God. In the Psalms we have a beautiful prophetic insight into the day of God’s power when Christ’s Church is seen to be standing together as an army in holy array, expressing the authority of the risen, ascended Lord and manifesting a royal priestly ministry in the Name of Him who hath an eternally unchanging priesthood.’ Both the Lordship and Priesthood of Christ are reflected in God’s willing people. They are seen as His united Church joined to Christ its Head. Through the Church He rules and reigns in the midst of His enemies. What a picture of His totally victorious, overcoming Church. Not one individual in that triumphant army of the Lord is pressed into His service. Everyone is willing in the day of God’s power. It is

this yieldedness, willingness and obedience of faith that makes the Church what God has called it to be. If there are problems regarding submission they are in this area of willingness more than any other. Once we have the victory in this we will not only see the Church glorious and triumphant in the face of every evil onslaught, but we will share in the thrill of it. No more weakness, fear or failure. We will participate in the life, power and glory of our risen, ascended Lord who is Head over all things to the Church which is His Body, the fulness of Him who filleth all in all.

2 Timothy 1:6,7 ~ For this reason I remind you to fan into flame the gift of God, which is in you through the laying on of my hands. For God did not give us a spirit of timidity, but a spirit of power, of love and of self-discipline. (NIV) In 2 Timothy 1:6 Paul says to fan into flame the gift of God. Meaning, to make the flame bigger. To grow and spread the gifts of God. The opposite of quench or extinguish. The gift would be whatever God

Gaining in Jesus Christ Bible Background • Philippians 3:1-11 Printed Text • Philippians 3:7-11 Devotional Reading • Matthew 13:44-46

January 20, 2013 -Bible Study Guide 8

AIM for Change

By the end of the lesson, we will: DISCOVER Paul’s attitude about the value of knowing Christ Jesus; EXAMINE feelings of achieving honors compared to feelings of living a life in Christ; and ESTABLISH a lifelong goal of measuring our achievements against the value of knowing Jesus Christ.

Philippians 3:7 But what things were gain to me, those I counted loss for Christ.

8 Yea doubtless, and I count all things but loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord: for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and do count them but dung, that I may win Christ, 9 And be found in him, not having mine own righteousness, which is of the law, but that which is through the faith of Christ, the righteousness which is of God by faith: 10 That I may know him, and the power of his resurrection, and the fellowship of his sufferings, being made conformable unto his death; 11 If by any means I might attain unto the resurrection of the dead.

IN FOCUS Grady really enjoyed going to his college class reunion. He’d seen a couple of his fraternity brothers and a few guys who were on the football team with him. “Baby, that was my world 10 years ago,” he told his wife, Anita. “The frat, the football team, and partying were what I lived for in those days. And, if I say so myself, I was quite popular with the girls, too.” “I know what you mean,” Anita chimed in. “Isn’t it funny how your priorities change, especially after you marry and have children. I remember that all I wanted was to look good in a pair of jeans and have a date on Saturday night.” “I know,” added Grady. “Having you and Nicole in my life means more to me than I ever thought anything could. But what really changed my life was having Jesus Christ as my Lord and Savior.” Knowing Christ changes one’s life more than anything else. Have you accepted Him into your heart and life? What changes has He brought about in you? Apostle Paul teaches that we should strive to gain in Jesus Christ, not in worldly values. THE PEOPLE, PLACES AND TIMES Libertine. These people who were trying to become a part of the early Christian church believed they were essentially a soul or spirit. To them, the body was only a temporary house, having no long-term value or significance. They held a dual view of life— spiritual matter is good and physical matter is evil or worthless. They believed that the body was insignificant and therefore claimed the freedom to do with it as they pleased. Benjamin. The tribe of Benjamin occupies the smallest territory of any of the 12 Hebrew tribes. In spite of its size, however, the tribe played a significant role in Israel’s history. Saul, the first ruler of Israel, was a Benjaminite. During the latter period of the judges, the Benjamin tribe practically disappeared from history when it mistreated a Levite and his concubine (Judges 19-20). But Jews were always proud when they could trace their lineage back to one of the tribes of Israel. BACKGROUND In chapter three, Paul warned the Philippians about the dangers of a distorted religion. He railed against the problem of having confidence in the flesh versus the knowledge of Christ. With fatherly concern for the congregation, Paul warned them about people who could lead them astray. He was also concerned about people who trusted more in themselves and their accomplishments. None, however, had reason to boast, according to Paul. For he himself had as much reason as anyone else. Paul had a background that was impressive by any standard, but especially by Hebrew qualifications. He understood from personal experience what it meant to have all the prized religious values, virtues, and achievements, only to discover that it was not the be-all and end-all of life.

Paul was born out of the tribe of Benjamin and was circumcised on the eighth day, according to the Law. Paul was a “Hebrew born of Hebrews” (Philippians 3:5). He was trained and educated as a Pharisee and used that knowledge to persecute the church. If anyone had reason to place confidence in his own ability and knowledge, it was Paul. IN DEPTH 1. All Is Gain through Christ (Philippians 3:7-9) If ever a person had reason to have confidence in himself and his intellectual abilities, it was Paul. Yet, even though Paul had impeccable credentials, which gave him standing in the Jewish hierarchy, he gave it all up when he encountered Christ. One can only give up that which one has, and one cannot give up what one does not have. Paul was able to speak with authority concerning the worthlessness of something that he once valued highly. Paul told the Philippians about his own heritage and accomplishments (vv. 5-6). Concerning his heritage, there were four gains, which he now counted as loss for Christ’s sake. First, he was circumcised on the eighth day, which meant he was born a Jew, not a proselyte, or one who has converted to Judaism,. Second, he was “of the stock of Israel,” meaning he was pure Hebrew, not of mixed descent as were many in Palestine during that day (v. 5, NKJV). Third, Paul was from the tribe of Benjamin, which had remained loyal to the Davidic line when the kingdom divided. Fourth, he was a “Hebrew of the Hebrews,” a phrase often used to designate those who had retained the national language (v. 5, NKJV). Though settled in a Greek city, Paul’s family had continued to speak the Hebrew tongue. Concerning his expertise in the Law, Paul was a Pharisee, part of a strict sect whose life pursuit was to obey the law in every detail. In his pursuit of righteousness, Paul was no exception. He was so devoted to his way of life that he gladly and eagerly—and probably with a great sense of arrogance and superiority—persecuted those in the church. Obviously a man of great intellectual ability, Paul came to realize that no legalistic training or adherence could save him or anyone else. Paul did give up things that were considered evil or worthless. He willingly walked away from a treasured lifestyle held in high esteem by his family and community. What he now counted as loss was not a former state of wickedness but of strict adherence to the Law. Yet, whatever advantages Paul had in his former life were nothing in light of the salvation he was now granted through the saving knowledge of Christ Jesus. Now Paul considered his former treasures to be worthless, like “dung”

(excrement, v. 8). 2. What It Means to Know Christ (vv. 10-11) Paul’s surrender of legalism and self-righteousness did not cause him to go to the other extreme of libertinism. He did not understand freedom from legalism to translate into lawlessness. As it was when he was a Pharisee, righteousness remained his consuming goal. Now, however, he pursued righteousness from God, found through faith in Christ, not the self-righteousness of his previous life. Righteousness is not a human achievement; it is the work of God in someone who has the openness of faith to receive Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. In order to know Christ, Paul gave up the life he once held so dear. His former life became all the more meaningless with the recognition that human effort is useless in attaining the righteousness that God requires. Therefore, our righteousness can only come through our faith In Christ. Paul wanted to know Christ and the power of His resurrection. To know Christ is not just an intellectual understanding of who He is. It is the most intimate relationship with Him. The closest example is the relationship between the husband and the wife. To know Christ is to experience His life. When we suffer, we are carrying our cross and experiencing a bit of what Christ endured for us. It is a privilege to be able to become one with Him as He hung there for you and me. In order to live with Christ, we must die with Him. We cannot go back to the Cross of Golgotha. However, the Christ who was victorious there can come to us and allow us to be conformed to Him and His ways. In life, we can have partial knowledge of His existence. That knowledge will be made complete in the resurrection from the dead. The resurrection of Jesus Christ is important to us for three reasons. His resurrection guarantees that our human bodies have great importance. It was in His earthly body that He died upon the Cross and in His heavenly body that He rose again. The Resurrection points to God’s stamp of approval upon our physical bodies, His creation. Secondly, His resurrection is the guarantee that we shall rise again. While we don’t have our beginnings in eternity, God shares His eternality with us beginning the day of our conversion. And third, His resurrection blesses us with the wonderful joy of His promise to be with us forever. SEARCH THE SCRIPTURES 1. Why did apostle Paul count everything a loss for Christ (Philippians 3:7-8)? 2. Apostle Paul deemed that his own righteousness would be of the _____________ (v. 9). 3. The righteousness that is of God is by _____________ (v. 9). DISCUSS THE MEANING Apostle Paul wanted to really know the Lord—the power of His resurrection and the fellowship of His suffering. What does that mean? LESSON IN OUR SOCIETY In order to know Christ and have a personal relationship with

Him, we need to be willing to make sacrifices in our lives. Sometimes, we have to give up old friends. Other times, we have to make time and take time to read and meditate on His Word, engage in prayer and fasting. So often in our fast-paced society, we have to be deliberate about making determine to make time for God. Are you determined to do so? MAKE IT HAPPEN Decide this week to spend meaningful time with God through studying His Word, meditating on it, and prayer. As you spend time with Him, ask Him to help you prioritize your time so that fellowship with Him will become first priority. MORE LIGHT ON TEXT Philippians 3:7-11 With the use of “finally” in the opening verse of chapter 3, Paul seems to indicate that he was coming to the end of his letter to the Philippians. However, in context, Paul is focusing on a different aspect of the Philippians’ situation, and now he addresses it. Here, he warns them against Judaizers, who he says put m u c h “ c o n fi d en c e i n t h e flesh” rather than in Christ (v. 3, NIV). He gives himself as an example of one who had by all measures reached the height of fame in the religion of Judaism and was more qualified both through birth and religious rites and tradition than any other. He was zealous about persecuting the very Church that he is now preserving and building with his suffering. The extent of his involvement is best

described in his own words: “Circumcised the eighth day, of the stock of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, an Hebrew of the Hebrews; as touching the law, a Pharisee; Concerning zeal, persecuting the church; touching the righteousness which is in the law, blameless” (Philippians 3:5-6). 7 But what things were gain to me, those I counted loss for Christ. 8 Yea doubtless, and I count all things but loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord: for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and do count them but dung, that I may win Christ, The Pharisees were a sect of zealous self-righteous Jews, who held to the letter of their interpretation of the Law and their own traditions without regard for the effect on the Word of God. They were the most privileged and highly “respected” and “honored” people in the temple worship (see Acts 5:34). They held strongly, for example, to the physical circumcision of the flesh and equated righteousness to the keeping

of the laws and the Jewish tradition. To reach that height, one must definitely be a Jew, “free born,” not a proselyte, an ardent keeper of the law, and “blameless” in all aspects of the religion (Acts 22:28; Philippians 3:6). To attain the position of a Pharisee, therefore, is a very rigorous undertaking, which requires much learning and knowledge of the law. The position also comes with great advantages and privileges. As we have seen in the first six verses, Paul had reached that high echelon. Indeed, when it came to meeting every requirement of Judaism, being of pure stock, and demonstrating fanatical zeal, he had no equal (Acts 7:57-58; 8:1-3; 9:1-2; 2 Corinthians 11:22; Galatians 1:13-14). All the things to his advantage, including honor and respect, which he possessed as a Pharisee, he “counted (as) loss for Christ,” Paul says (Philippians 3:7). Here, Paul says all the positions and aspirations that every Jewish young man dreams of and are thought to be “gain” (Gk. kerdos, KER-dos) and what he has already achieved, are now zemia (Gk. dzay-MEEah), a “loss” or worthless to him. Zemia here has the

1-888-290-7277 idea of loss as related to a trade or business enterprise where one incurs a material or financial loss. The loss is voluntary, where for the sake of something better and bigger, one purposely decides to take on forfeiture. One example would be throwing merchandise overboard to lighten the weight of a sinking ship to save lives (Acts 27:10, 21). The word “counted” which Paul uses here is the Greek hegeomai (hayg-EH-om-ahee), which means to consider, esteem, or deem. Paul uses business language, as intimated above, and considers all the things of his past— things gained before the Damascus encounter—as losses. Paul considered everything lost “for Christ” (for the sake of having a relationship with Christ— for “knowing Christ,” Philippians 3:8). “For Christ” should be understood as for the purpose of gaining Christ, rather than “for Christ” as though Christ were to benefit from the loss. Paul’s encounter with the living Christ on the Damascus Road altered his perspective and mindset in life. He reassessed his priorities in considering access to all the worldly glory and position while being ignorant in the

The Integrity Crisis

DR. JOYCE HARRELL

We are living in a time when no one wants to listen to the Church. We can turn on the television and see and hear preachers preaching and soliciting money, which gives the impression that the focus of the church is only on money. It would seem that the reason for preaching the “gospel” is all about monetary gain. Reality shows are abounding and centered on “church folk,” whose interests appear more about ratings and money than on bringing God glory. How does God get the glory

through displays of petty differences, accusations and quarrels? The world is watching and saying, “You are experiencing the same thing that I am facing and it appears you can’t handle it either. So why should I come to your God? Bottom line, what is the difference between your life and mine?” As Christians we need to be displaying or living out that we know where our help and hope comes from. Our Father is expecting us to be witnesses to a dying world; He is expecting us to be salt giving flavor where there is none, and being light in dim places. As believers we are not free of problems and trials, but God is expecting us to demonstrate to the world, how to handle our problems and trials. Dr. Lynn Anderson says, “We need to be models in our families and those around us showing how to handle money, stress, sex, temptations and burnout. In doing so not only will we attract followers, but we will also show them how to keep on trying when they are tempted to give up.” Joyce is a lay-person, under the leadership of Dr. Ticey M. Cor 12:4-11 (ESV) We are to use these in a manner that is not cowardly or timid and to edify the church. So with yourselves, since you are eager for manifestations of the Spirit, strive to excel in building up the church. 1 Cor 14:12 (ESV) God deserves so much more! In verse 7 he describes the work of the spirit, if we allow it, in administering these gifts in whatever manner God sees fit. Look at this now......this is

NEWS@RAISETHEPRAISENEWS.NET riches of knowing Christ on one hand and knowing Christ as Lord then gaining eternal life on the other hand. The thought of preferring to know Christ rather than having worldly possessions and positions or basking in his past personal achievements is re-emphasized in verse 8. Paul writes, “Yea doubtless, and I count all things but loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord.” In the Greek, “yea doubtless” is alla menounge (al-LAH men-OON-geh) and adds strength to what he has previously said. This phrase can be interpreted as “indeed,” “surely” or “definitely.” Why does he consider all the worldly things as loss? It is because of “the excellency of the knowledge Christ Jesus.” The word “excellency” is the Greek huperecho (hoop-erEKH-o), which has the idea of superiority or supremacy. Here, Paul evaluates his past— his privilege, family, religious heritage, his achievements, rise to fame as a Pharisee, power, etc.—and finds them worthless compared with his new privilege of knowing Christ. In fact, for Paul, knowing Christ is superior and supremely more valuable than all other things.

Paul did not only consider all things a loss in order to have personal knowledge of Christ, he indeed incurred the loss of everything. He says, “For whom I have suffered the loss (zemia) of all things,” which means to sustain damage or to receive injury. Paul’s quest to know Christ cost him everything, including the highest position that he had attained within Judaism. Therefore, the loss is real, rather than an ordinary cliché or empty boast. We deduce from the tense of “I have suffered” (past passive), that the “loss” occurred at a specific time. This seems to suggest that the Jewish authorities probably stripped him of all his Pharisaic privileges and advantages the very moment he declared his allegiance to Christ following his encounter with the Lord on the Damascus Road. He not only “considered” them as losses in the past, Paul says he still does “count them but dung” in the present. There is no regret at all. To him, these things he formerly cherished are now “dung” (Gk. skubalon, SKOO-bal-on), a strong word that describes

Paul’s attitude toward those things, compared to what he has now gained with “the knowledge of Christ” (v. 8). Skubalon here means garbage or what is thrown to the dogs. It is used to describe any refuse such as the excrement of animals, or things that are worthless and detestable. In order that he might “win” (Gk. kerdaino, kerDAH-ee-no) or “gain Christ,” Paul says, all things he had before became garbage to him, things that are worthless and useless (KJV, NLT). 9 And be found in him, not having mine own righteousness, which is of the law, but that which is through the faith of Christ, the righteousness which is of God by faith: Another reason for counting all things “dung” is that he might “be found in him (Christ), not having mine own righteousness, which is of the law.” Prior to his conversion, Paul attained high position by personal achievement of keeping the Law, which is the measuring stick for righteousness in Judaism. This type of self-righteousness gives rise to and is characterized by pride and arrogance (Romans 10:1-3) and contradicts the work of Christ. To him, selfrighteousness (Pharisaic righteousness), based on what one could do, has no more value. Christ taught His disciples, “That except your righteousness shall exceed the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no case enter into the kingdom of heaven” (Matthew 5:20). Instead of depending on his own righteousness, Paul relies now on the “righteousness (Gk. dikaiosune, dik-ah-yos-OO-nay) which is through . . . Christ” (Philippians 3:9), based not on personal merit but on the finished work of Christ (Isaiah 61:10), one appropriated by faith only. “ R i g h t e o u s n e s s ,” d i k a i o s u n e , a n d “justification” with its verb “to justify” were used in both Jewish and Greek communities as judicial terms, whereby a judge would either justify or condemn someone. To justify is therefore to vindicate or to declare one right. In the Jewish religion, the criterion for being justified before God was for one to keep the Law of Moses. This amounted to being “good” or doing “good” works in order to earn God’s favorable verdict, a notion Paul had. However, Paul realized after his dramatic encounter with the Lord that “by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight” (Romans 3:20). This understanding conforms to the OT affirmation that no human can attain God’s standards of holiness by doing good work. Man, without exception, is too sinful by nature to be able to do enough good to receive God’s approval (Psalm 14:1-3; 53:1-3; 143:1-4). The only criterion for righteousness before God is by faith through Christ. Faith here simply means “trust” (see Genesis 15:6), having confidence in and accepting God’s work of grace through the life and death of Christ. 10 That I may know him, and the power of his resurrection, and the fellowship of his sufferings, being made conformable unto his death; Paul declares another goal for considering his personal advantages “dung.” That is to “know (Christ), and the power of his resurrection, and the fellowship of his sufferings, and to be made conformable unto his death.” To “know Christ” as Philippians 3:8 implies, is not intellectual but experiential; it involves an intimate relationship, as in the sexual intimacy between husband and wife (Genesis 4:1; Matthew 1:25). Before his encounter with Christ on the road to Damascus, Paul had intellectual knowledge of Him, but on that

day, he encountered the Lord in a unique way. A special and intimate relationship was inaugurated between him and Christ—which is another dimension of knowing Christ. Hence, he called Him “Lord” (Acts 9:5). The idea here is that he might have an ongoing relationship with Christ—more than a one-time knowledge of Him—and therefore develop a deeper relationship with the living Christ. The only obstacle was his past glory and personal advantages. These personal achievements are now rubbish, filthy and stinky garbage to him. In Philippians 3:10, Paul qualifies this intimate knowledge of Christ with a cluster of other phrases. The first is “and the power of his resurrection.” What does Paul have in mind by this phrase? Paul seems to be saying that he wants also “to know” (i.e., to experience the efficacy of the power in Christ’s resurrection). The knowledge here is not separate from his knowing Christ. He wishes to experience the transforming, lifechanging power with which Christ has been endowed through His resurrection. This power sustains us in Him. Christ’s resurrection from the dead signifies that God has accepted the ransom He paid on our behalf (Matthew 20:28; Acts 20:28; 1 Peter 1:18), and therefore we are justified (Romans 4:25; 8:1, 16; 1 Corinthians 15:17). The second phrase is “and the fellowship of his sufferings.” That means Paul’s wishes were not only to know Christ and experience the power in His resurrection but also to experience Christ by “sharing” in Christ’s sufferings. This phrase poses some problems in interpretation. What does Paul mean by sharing or participating in the sufferings of Christ? Does he refer to his physical suffering—the beatings, stoning, hunger, shipwreck, imprisonment, etc. (Acts 9:15-16, 23-25; 22:2229)? It may include all those, but it does not in any way imply that his own sufferings complement or complete Christ’s suffering nor does he allude to his own physical suffering augmenting Christ’s afflictions (Colossians 1:24). Just as to know Christ and the power of His resurrection is an inward spiritual experience, to know Him in the fellowship of His suffering is also a spiritual experience expressed in terms of dying with Him (Romans 6:8; Galatians 2:19-20). Participating in the suffering does not imply inflicting suffering on oneself, as in self-mutilation, or exposing oneself to danger in the name of Christ. When Paul says, “I am crucified with Christ” (Galatians 2:20), it does not mean literal crucifixion as some practice in the Philippines during annual Easter celebrations. Each year on Good Friday, some Filipino Christians torture and mutilate themselves using nails in their hands and feet to hang on crosses as a sign of suffering with Christ. This is quite unbiblical and a misinterpretation of the Scriptures. Paul’s view of partaking in the suffering of Christ is a total resolve to live for Christ and to serve Him under any circumstances—an intense desire to be like Him in holiness. It means dying to sin (Romans 7:9-25), and dying to self, as spoken of by Jesus Himself (Mark 8:34). With such desire and longing for complete knowledge of Christ,

“SLOW BURN”

“Don’t let the sun go down on your anger, and don’t give the Devil an opportunity.” – Ephesians 4:26b-27

by Andrea Andrews Imagine a young man in his mid 20’s – a healthy, attractive and well educated man. He’s completed his undergraduate and graduate studies and has stepped into the career

opportunity of a lifetime. He’s earning an excellent salary and has a quality benefit package – vacation, sick, retirement, health & dental, vision, corporate matching and year end bonuses. Within a year’s time, he is promoted to supervisor of his department followed by manager only a few short months later. He is at the top of his game and riding high… Deep in this young man’s core is a slow burn stemming from events in his childhood; an anger which has gone unattended for many years. While

he has been seemingly triumphant in his life (academic & professional achievement), his relationships have suffered tremendously including his relationship with God. He has grown accustom to the slow burn which has allowed him to become “functional” (something like an alcoholic). He is productive at work, but his anger has broken some of the spirits of his subordinates and others who work along side him – his words brash at times. Later, he goes on to meet and marry the love of his

life. They raise their family and over the years watch their children’s children arrive. His wife and children have remained loyal and supportive – respecting this patriarch for his ability to be a wonderful provider, protector and even a man who has served with great dedication in the church. Yet, they all bear the emotional cuts, scars and bruises of his wrath which have remained unaddressed – daggers he’s spoken during his outbursts; damage which is somehow irreparable. The Bible tells us that we must not

“sin” in our anger. Whether he knew it or not, every time his harsh words and responses hurt another as a result of his rage, he sinned against God. Anger is poisonous and highly toxic. It destroys households, marriages, lives and relationships. Rage separates us from God because IT IS A SIN. While God realizes we are human first and that anger is [on occasion] a justifiable emotion…we have no right to impose it on others…Peace, Love & Blessings www.theprocesschristiancounseling.com

Paul is able to endure all physical suffering that comes his way because of his belief in and defense of the Gospel of Christ (2 Corinthians 4:7-12; Galatians 6:17; Colossians 1:24). The last in the cluster of phrases in Philippians 3:10, “being made conformable unto his death,” tends to confirm Paul’s longing for holiness. “Conformable” in Greek is summorphoo (soom-morFO-o), and it appears once in the New Testament. It is to grant or invest in the same form, to share the likeness of, or to take on the same form. The language and idea call to mind Paul’s language in his epistle (letter) to the Romans: “For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his

and self-discipline), gentleness (again, love and selfdiscipline) and self-control (by walking in the spirit and not according to the flesh by self-discipline). Galatians 5:22 With the authority that is given us in Christ Jesus, the power of God, (Jesus GAVE us this authority, US!! Gave it to me as worthless as I am!!) or ability to act, out of affection for others and self improvement. All through the Gospel of Jesus Christ. All received by faith in the resurrected Lord. That God sent His son to this earth to bare our sins. He carried the burden of our punishment all the way to the cross and left it there. Through His death we are forgiven and by believing in this we have eternal life and the holy spirit. And this is eternal life, that they know you

death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection . . . Now if we be dead with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with him” (Romans 6:5, 8). This implies union with Christ and participation in the unique attributes of Christ, which include His humility and His unselfish love for all, which led to His sacrificial death and His righteousness (2:5), which through His death has been imparted to all believers. Indeed, Paul metaphorically describes the believer’s union with Christ in the following ways: suffered with Christ (Romans 8:17), is crucified with Him (Romans 6:6), died with Him (6:8; 2 Timothy 2:11), and is buried with Him (Romans 6:4; Colossians 2:12). Paul, by the efficacy of Christ’s death on the Cross, is already dead to sin at the instance of

his conversion on the road to Damascus. This was past experi ence. However, he strives to make the effects of this death a daily reality through his lifestyle and the conscious choices he makes daily, renouncing self with its desires and all that does not conform to the likeness of Christ.

the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent. I glorified you on earth, having accomplished the work that you gave me to do. John 17:3-4 (ESV) Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but made himself nothing, taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. Phil 2:5-11 (ESV) So we should follow in Christ’s foot steps with POWER and LOVE

and SELF-DISCIPLINE. With PASSION! Not quinching the gifts that are given to us through Christ Jesus! In verse 8 .. I LOVE THIS! ~ “SO DO NOT BE ASHAMED TO TESTIFY ABOUT THE LORD, OR ASHAMED OF ME AS A PRISONER. BUT JOIN WITH ME IN SUFFERING FOR THE GOSPEL BY THE POWER OF GOD.” For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek. Romans 1:16 (ESV) Indeed, all (not some or few but ALL) who desire to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted .. 2 Timothy 3:12 (ESV).. Power ..of.. God .. God is so much bigger than we give him credit for ... and just think of the things we could do with the authority already given to us if we would just let go and let God. With Power and Love and Self-control! Paul said .. Imitate me as I imitate Christ!

Therefore, Philippians 3:11 is to be read in context with the preceding thoughts expressed in the foregoing verses where Paul strives to live a life reflecting the life and likeness of his Savior Christ Jesus.

BMC ELECTION ........

want to do is provide a substantive platform, that is relevant, transferrable, and applicable, to the Pastor’s in the respective vineyard by which they are assigned, whereby the can come to the conference and get withdrawal and not always make a deposit, we want to do that by first assessing where we are. I ran on the platform of the 5 A agenda, Assessment, Adjustment, Attendance, Assistance and Adoration. We first need to assess where we are and where we want to go, and how we intend on getting there, that’s the first order of business, in a climate like this emotions are everywhere, and of course we want to be respectful, you have one guy who one and one guy who lost, so we need time for the dust to settle, but the flip side of that is that we have no time to lose, we must hit the ground running and capitalize on the momentum that we have captured in this place today. Installation of the New President of the Baptist Ministers Conference will take place at McCoy Memorial Baptist Church on February 18, 2013 at 11:00 am.
