The 43 stamp in the Black He r i t a g e ® s e r i e s h o n o r s Gwen Ifill (1955–2016), one of America’s most esteemed journalists. Among the first African Americans to hold prominent positions in both broadcast and print journalism, she was a trailblazer in the profession. The stamp art features a photo of Ifill taken in 2008 by photographer Robert Severi. After graduating from college in 1977, Ifill’s first job as a journalist was at The Boston Herald- American. She later worked at The Baltimore Evening Sun, The Washington Post, and The New York Times, where she was a White House correspondent and provided the paper’s coverage of Bill Clinton’s presidential campaign in 1992. In 1994, Ifill moved to a broadcast job at NBC, where she covered politics in the D.C. rd
bureau. Five years later, she joined PBS; she became the senior political correspondent for The NewsHour with Jim Lehrer and moderator and managing editor of Washington Week, the first woman and first African American to moderate a major television news-analysis show. During her career, Ifill covered seven presidential campaigns and in 2004, became the first African- American female journalist to moderate a vice-presidential debate. She went on to moderate the 2008 vice-presidential debate. In 2013, Ifill became part of the first all-female team to anchor a daily national news show, PBS NewsHour. Ifill was known for her nonpartisan and in-depth reporting. Her tremendous personal warmth coupled with her integrity, tenacity, and intellect gave her
an authoritative professional presence; viewers trusted her to provide accurate, fair, and balanced reporting. Ifill believed that her job was to bring light rather than heat to issues of the day. Among Ifill’s honors were the Radio Television Digital News Foundation’s Leonard Zeidenberg First Amendment Award (2006), Harvard’s Joan Shorenstein Center’s Goldsmith Career Award for Excellence in Journalism (2009), and induction into the National Association of Black Journalists Hall of Fame (2012). In 2015, she was awarded the Fourth Estate Award by the National Press Club. She received numerous honorary degrees and served on the boards of the News Literacy Project and the Committee to Protect Journalists, which renamed its Press Freedom Award in her honor. The 2016
John Chancellor Award was posthumously awarded to Ifill by the Columbia Journalism School. In 2017, the Washington Press Club Foundation and the PBS NewsHour created a journalism fellowship named for Ifill. Her alma mater, Simmons University, opened the Gwen Ifill College of Media, Arts, and Humanities in the fall of 2018. One of the nation’s most admired journalists, Ifill brought clarity and honesty to her work. Her commitment to the public interest made her a standard-bearer for journalistic fairness, courage, and integrity. Adi D N di dh Art director Derry Noyes designed the stamp. The Gwen Ifill stamp is being issued as a Forever® stamp. This Forever stamp will always be equal in value to the current FirstClass Mail® one-ounce price.

SERMON CORNER It is a solemn thought that our love for God is measured by our everyday relationships with others. Except as its validity is proven in standing the test of daily life with our fellow-men, our love for God may be found to be a delusion. It is easy to think that we humble ourselves before God, but our humility toward others is the only sufficient proof that our humility before God is real. To be genuine, humility

must abide in us and become our very nature. True humility is to be made of no reputation—as did Christ. In God’s presence, humility is not a posture we assume for a time—when we think of Him or sermon corner continued on page 10

The Father’s Will and Timing
dr. tonya lewis
There is a masterplan and intended purpose as to why our Great Heavenly Father assigned us with different life missions and assignments. To accomplish them successfully, we must know what t0hey are and be determined to fulfil God’s plan for our individual lives. In Matthew 4:13--The tempter (Satan) came to Him
(Jesus) and said, “If You are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread.”, which the true translation implies since you are the Son of God, then turn these stones into bread. Satan suggested Jesus do this for several reasons. Two of the reasons being, 1) to flex His supernatural powers at the command of Satan and 2) To remember that as the Son of God, He had certain power and benefits. Those benefits included Jesus having the power to miraculously eliminate His hunger and any other lacking of any kind! If Jesus had not known His true mission and relationship with the Father, He (the human) might have yielded to Satan’s suggestion, because Jesus was in fact hunger after fasting for 40 days. But this would have shown that Jesus was not a yielded Son to the
Father or sensitive to the Father’s perfect plan and timing. God the Father knew that Jesus was hungry. He knew that He had fasted 40 days. Daddy-God also knew He had a plan for providing food and nourishment at just the right time. This is how we must submit ourselves to God the Father and follow His lead. We must know that God has our very situation in view. He is mindful of our every pain, our every challenge. Because of that, in His own perfect time, He has a plan to remedy any and all problems that we have one way or the other. If Jesus would have turned the stones into bread: 1) He would have been obeying Satan to do it and when Satan said to do it. 2) Turning the stones into bread would have only provided for Him when His mission to earth was not for Himself but to secure our salvation if we desire it. 3) Also, if He would have yielded now, he the man might would have yielded when He was confronted with this same temptation to a greater degree on the cross. With each challenge and trial the Lord fortifies us even the more to face even stronger and fiercer challenges. Mark 15:30Well then, save yourself and come down from

PRAISES OF ZION PRESENTS BLACK HISTORY- 2020
Dr. J. Benjamin Hardwick
Dr. J. Benjamin Hardwick declares, “Not being aware of your past shuts the door to the future.” Therefore, he is proud to announce that our Women’s Ministry, under the leadership of Sister Carol Wynne is presenting “A POTPOURRI OF LOVE AND SOUL”, Sunday, February 16, 2020 at 3:30 pm. (Potpourri means a mixture or collection of items; the letter “T” is silent when pronouncing the word) We invite one and all to come and join us as we travel back in time to garner new insight on unknown facts, and be reminded in some cases of the accomplishments of those who have come before us. We invite you to join us. We are located at 8222 So. San Pedro St., in Los Angeles, California.
You may call the church office at 323 750-1033 for any questions or concerns you may have. We encourage you to wear your Afro-centric clothing for this event. However, if you do not own any such clothing, please come as you are. Do not let any trivial reason keep you from attending this service. We have made every preparation for it to be both educational as well as enjoyable. President Barack Obama said, “Change will not come if we wait for some other person or some other time. We are the ones we’ve been waiting for. We are the change that we seek.” Did you not know that during slavery it was a crime for Black (slaves) people to read books, magazines, articles, and anything containing letters and words. Anti-literacy laws were created to restrict the education of slaves. These laws clearly prohibited assembling or teaching slaves to read or write. The punishment included whippings, beatings, and even death! Slave masters knew that knowledge was powerful. They knew how to keep us down.
All slave codes established made it illegal for us to be taught or caught reading or writing. Times have brought about a change. But have you? Now you can freely make that change and choose to educate
yourselves by reading, and then teach your children to love reading. You can make that change without fear of persecution. What I am saying is Black people love yourself, know yourself, and (read)
learn your history. To God be the glory! Dr. J. Benjamin Hardwick, S enior Pastor, Sister Carol Wynne, Women’s Ministry President, and Sister Clarice Holmes, Reporter.

RAISE THE PRAISE CHURCH INFORMATION SUNDAY SCHOOL LESSON
KINGDOM-SEEKING PRAYER Devotional Reading • Psalm 40:1–10, 16, 17 Bible Background • Matthew 6:9–15 HONORING GOD
Unit 3: Jesus Teaches About True Worship LESSONS 10–13
Lesson Aims
1. Recite the Lord’s Prayer. 2. Explain the petitions of the Lord’s Prayer. 3. Write a prayer that focuses on one aspect of the Lord’s Prayer he or she tends to overlook. Key Verse: Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. —Matthew 6:10 Focal verses: NIV Matthew 6:9–15 9 “This, then, is how you should
Introduction A. The Rightful King Fairy tales and legends often feature stories about a just, good king to come. One famous example is that of Arthur Pendragon. When Arthur’s father, King Uther Pendragon, died, there were many who wanted to be crowned king. There was a test, however: a sword embedded in a stone and engraved, “Whoso pulleth out this sword of this stone is the rightwise born king of all England.” Many tried to pull the sword, but could not. Yet young Arthur, almost by accident, effortlessly pulled the sword from the stone. He was immediately recognized by all the knights and nobles as the new king. Heralds were sent throughout England to proclaim the new sovereign: King Arthur. Christians also anticipate the coming of a king. The prayer that Jesus taught his disciples gives us insight into what we can expect from the king whose kingdom is breaking into the world. Though many “kings” try to claim our allegiance, this king alone gives us everything we need and is worthy of our deepest loyalty. B. Lesson Context Last week’s lesson on Matthew 6:1–8 revealed Jesus’ teaching on the dangers and follies of hypocrisy in the areas of giving and prayer. As with that lesson, the historical setting of today’s lesson text is Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5–7). Today’s text studies one of two versions of the Lord’s Prayer, the other being found in Luke 11. Regarding distinctives, the prayer in today’s text differs from its counterpart in Luke 11 in various ways. For one, Jesus’ teaching on prayer that begins in Matthew 6:9 occurred as part of teaching that he was already engaged in. “When Jesus saw the crowds, he went up on a mountainside and sat down. His disciples came to him” (Matthew 5:1). Luke is more specific in noting that the version of the prayer he records happens after “one of his disciples said to him, ‘Lord, teach us to pray, just as John taught his disciples’ ”

pray: “ ‘Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, 10 your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. 11 Give us today our daily bread. 12 And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. 13 And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.’ ” 14 For if you forgive other people when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. 15 But if you do not forgive others their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins.
(Luke 11:1). Another major difference between Matthew and Luke is in the length of the prayer: Luke’s version is much more concise than Matthew’s. The content is very similar, but Luke has recorded a very minimal prayer. The differences suggest that Jesus taught about prayer more than once. Doing so allowed his disciples to learn through repetition what Jesus wanted them to know. Just before our lesson’s opening verse, Jesus had criticized hypocritical and pagan prayer, advising privacy and sincerity rather than public performance and verbosity. He followed those negative examples with a positive alternative. I. The Prayer (Matthew 6:9–13) A. Holiness (v. 9) 9a. “This, then, is how you should pray: The Lord’s Prayer is not simply a masterpiece to be put behind glass in a museum. It is not to be kept unopened and pristine on a bookshelf. Jesus’ prayer is intended to be a model prayer. As such, it teaches how his disciples should pray. For this reason, the prayer remains a wonderful resource for the church. It can be prayed as recorded in the text, and it can be studied as a pattern that teaches how to be concise and orderly in praying. The prayer consists of four couplets and an ending pronouncement, as follows. 9b. “ ‘Our Father The first couplet in the Lord’s Prayer consists of the address, seen here, and the first petition, seen in verse 9d, below. While God surely discerns our hearts and intents in prayers, it is important for us to remember the one to whom we are praying. The way we address God at the outset establishes the tone for the rest of the prayer. Will we address him flippantly and casually, expecting to receive whatever we ask? Will we approach him in terror, paradoxically afraid both of being heard and of being ignored? Or will we speak to him in a
manner befitting the Creator of the universe and lover of our souls (Psalm 63:2, 3)? Jesus teaches us to address God in two ways. First, he is our Father. First-century Jews have many ways to describe God, but this one is used relatively less frequently than others (compare Isaiah 63:16; 64:8). God is more often referred to as Creator, Lord, or King. But the fact that it is entirely appropriate to address God as Father is an understanding that runs throughout the recorded teachings of Jesus. This is so especially in the Sermon on the Mount (see Matthew 5:16, 45, 48; 6:1, 4, 6, 8, 18, 26, 32; 7:11). Note that in the verse at hand, Jesus does not refer to God as Father simply because Jesus is the Son (John 1:14, 18, 49). He does not say my Father as he does in John 14:23. He says our Father, thereby including his disciples (compare Romans 1:7; Galatians 1:3; etc.). Christians have access to God the Father in prayer on an intimate level, the level of a son or a daughter talking with a loving parent. For some people, this is problematic. None of our fathers were perfect. Some people have no positive memories in that regard. Maybe he was abusive or absent. For this reason, many men (and women) live trying not to become their fathers; they struggle against that bad example for years. Even so, we should discern carefully an implication of what Jesus teaches. We do not judge God by our earthly fathers. One of the benefits of having the gift of the Holy Spirit (Acts 2:38) is that we can address God as Father (Mark 14:36; Romans 8:15). Christians have a restored relationship to God as His sons and daughters. He is truly the perfect Father who will never desert us or abuse us. Our Father will never fail us. The second way Jesus teaches us to address God our Father comes next. Our Father(s) My father died when I was 9 years old, and it has always troubled me that I don’t have many memories of him. Although my older siblings have filled in gaps with positive impressions, my prominent emotional recollection is that my father was stern and intimidating. When I became a father myself 36 years ago, I was determined to do my best to provide my son with an example that would influence his perception of his Father in Heaven in a positive way. I am blessed to observe that he seems to have a very healthy relationship with our Father. How are negative memories of your earthly father (or mother) affecting your view of God? Ask our Father to help you relate to him as loving and holy as his Word clearly reveals him to be. —A. S. 9c. “ ‘in heaven, To address God as “our Father” is to speak to only part of our relationship to him. The true God is the God in heaven. He is not part of the physical universe he created. He is separate from it (transcendent). Although we are created in his image and can have
fellowship with him, the God of Heaven is not one of us. His heavenly abode is beyond any physical location that we can understand (compare 2 Corinthians 12:2–4). This results in an important truth that is implied in Jesus’ words: we are not God. As we begin to understand this, it makes the prayer even more marvelous. We, mere men and women who are not God, are nonetheless privileged to speak with the God of Heaven! 9d. “ ‘hallowed be your name, Following the address of God in Heaven is the first of the seven petitions, as distributed among four couplets, in this prayer. A petition in prayer is simply a request. Along with praise, thanksgiving, and confession, petitions are an expected, normal, healthy part of a believer’s prayer life. Though God anticipates our needs (Matthew 6:8), he still desires for us to ask him for what we need. Doing so expresses and strengthens our knowledge of our reliance on God for every provision (John 1:3; Acts 17:24–28). At the most basic level, petitioning for the name of the Lord to be hallowed is a commitment to honor the third commandment: “You shall not misuse the name of the Lord your God” (Exodus 20:7). When we pray for God’s name to be hallowed, we pray for his name to be treated as holy. Such a prayer is a commitment to God to do so oneself. We are saying that we intend to reflect

COLUMNS sunday school continued from page 6 his holiness among men and women, using our influence to his glory, not to his shame or to our own ends. We are also asking to be empowered not to misuse his holy name. In this first couplet of the Lord’s Prayer, we run into a great paradox. On the one hand, we are taught to address God as Father. On the other hand, we do this while we acknowledge that God is completely other, completely without sin, completely worthy of honor, completely holy. Intimacy with the Father as his children is to be yoked with our respect for the Holy One. We are encouraged in the Lord’s Prayer to be intimate with God as our Father, to share with him the deepest things of our hearts. Yet we are also warned to be respectful of God, not forgetting our position in the hierarchy of the universe. God is great, and we are small. God is holy, and we are sinners saved only through the blood of Jesus (Hebrews 7:27, 28). What Do You Think? What can our church do to help people gain a better understanding of the concept of holiness? Digging Deeper What would a failure to grasp the importance of this concept look like? B. The Kingdom (v. 10) 10. “ ‘your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. The second couplet features petitions number two and three of the seven petitions of this prayer. Petition number two is for the kingdom of heaven to come. When we pray this, we are asking for the establishment of God’s reign and sovereign rule. Petition number three asks for God’s will to be done. When we pray this, we are asking that the will of God be carried out in all things at all times. These twin petitions cannot be separated. To pray for the establishing of God’s kingdom is to pray for the accomplishing of his will. To pray for the accomplishing of his will is to pray for the establishing of his kingdom. The two petitions are connected by a joint qualifier: on earth as it is in heaven. This serves for both petitions. When we pray these petitions, we are praying that God’s reign— the kingdom of Heaven—will be established in its ultimate fullness. To pray this is to pray that God’s sovereign will, as realized in Heaven, will prevail in our world as well. We are praying that all opposition to God will cease, that all men and women will submit to his will (Revelation 21:22–27). We are praying that the last remnants of rebellion in our universe will be vanquished, and that we will experience his peace (21:1–6).
More than this, our praying for the establishment of God’s kingdom and the working of his will on earth commits ourselves to help achieve those results (contrast Revelation 3:1–3). We are to desire God to reign in our hearts and in our world. We are to labor that God’s will, his purpose, and his plans will come to fruition here and now. And we do our part of the work in this regard. We should not pray these petitions and then stand back and wait for God to do the work he intends us to do (compare James 1:23–25, 27). What Do You Think? What are some tangible ways you can help speed the inbreaking of God’s kingdom? Digging Deeper How do 2 Peter 3:12; Revelation 11:17; and 22:20 help frame your decision? C. Daily Needs (vv. 11–13) 11. “ ‘Give us today our daily bread. Matthew 6:11 and 12 form the third of the four couplets in this prayer. This couplet features the fourth and fifth of the prayer’s seven petitions. The fourth petition, in the verse before us, calls us to go straight to the source for our most basic needs. Bread refers to food in general. In this case, it even seems to refer to all the essentials we need to live: food, water, clothing, shelter, etc. When we pray this petition, we recognize our dependence on God. We are affirming our belief that God will supply our every need (compare Luke 12:27–31). God is the ultimate source of our livelihood (Deuteronomy 8:18; James 1:17). This does not mean we should expect to find manna on our breakfast table when we awake (compare Exodus 16). We commit to working to supply our needs as honest laborers in the world (compare 2 Thessalonians 3:12). But we also trust that God will care for us no matter what reversals and hardships come our way (compare Proverbs 30:8). We may be down to our last dollar and our last can of beans. But we trust that God has not forgotten us and will provide. When our resources are depleted, we may be surprised at how God supplies our daily bread! But as we pray for bread, we should remember that “man shall not live on bread alone” (Matthew 4:4, lesson 10). We should also think about Jesus, who is the “bread of life” (John 6:48). He came down from Heaven to give us eternal life. Just as our bodies need physical food, our souls need spiritual food. What Do You Think? What are some steps you can take to ensure that your prayers for material needs matches the spirit of this verse?
Digging Deeper What disciplines can you adopt to ensure that petitions for material needs do not eclipse the prayer elements of Matthew 6:9, 10? 12. “ ‘And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. The fifth petition of the seven is unique for a couple of reasons. First, it is tied to the concept of daily provision. In this case, the provision sought is that of forgiveness of our debts, another term for sin (compare Matthew 18:23–35). This petition, like that for daily bread, invites repetition because of the problem of ongoing sin in our lives. Though the Holy Spirit is renewing us (Titus 3:5), we are not perfectly without sin. We still need to recognize the reality of sin (1 John 1:8–10). We note that this petition is conditional: as we ask for God’s forgiveness, we promise to be forgiving of others. We do not expect to receive from God what we do not extend to others (compare Luke 6:37). This is the only petition in the prayer that receives an immediate additional comment from Jesus (see on Matthew 6:14, 15, below). What Do You Think? Who do you need to forgive, and/or from whom do you need to seek forgiveness? How will you start the processes (compare Matthew 18:15–17; Luke 17:3)? Digging Deeper Give examples of situations that would call for your public expression of forgiveness in contrast with forgiveness that takes place silently inside one’s head and heart. 13. “ ‘And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.’ ” The fourth and final couplet features the sixth and seventh petitions. These are two sides of the same coin. When we pray lead us not into temptation, we are recognizing both lurking sin (Genesis 4:7) and our inability to conquer it on our own. Thus we ask for God’s mercy to help us in the times of trial, in the occasions of temptation. Of course, God does not tempt us (James 1:13), though he does test us (Hebrews 11:17). When we pray deliver us from the evil one, we are again admitting our inability to deal with Satan’s attacks in our own strength (compare 1 Corinthians 10:13). This petition acknowledges not just evil in the abstract but also the evil one himself: the devil, who tempts people to commit sin. Here we see part of the prayer’s assurance. Powerful as he is, Satan is no match for Almighty God (John 17:15; 2 Thessalonians 3:3; 2 Timothy 4:18). One who is delivered from evil is to produce the fruit
of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22– 25). As we do, we constantly wear “the full armor of God” to “take [our] stand against the devil’s schemes” (Ephesians 6:11). In translations that use l a t e r N e w Te s t a m e n t manuscripts, this verse ends with a pronouncement: “For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.” While this conclusion is beautiful and appropriate, older manuscripts do not include it. But with echoes of 1 Chronicles 29:11–13, it nevertheless expresses a biblical idea based on biblical language. It fits well as a restatement of the themes in the petitions: God’s coming kingdom, his power to provide, and our glorious deliverance from temptation and evil. II. On Forgiveness (Matthew 6:14, 15) A. For Others (v. 14) 14. “For if you forgive other people when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. Having ended the model prayer, Jesus digs deeper to ensure that his listeners understand the implications of the fifth petition (see Matthew 6:12, above). The word translated sin here can also be translated “trespass” (example: Romans 5:15– 18, 20) or “transgressions” (example: Ephesians 2:1, 5). Receiving and extending forgiveness are inseparable. To experience the forgiveness of God, our hearts must be prepared to forgive others (Mark 11:25). Forgiveness of sin is essential to the church’s identity, as implied in the words of Jesus at the last supper: “This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins” (Matthew 26:28). The church should be a forgiving place, encouraging both the receiving and extending of this act of grace (Ephesians 4:32; Colossians 3:13). When we come to the point of realizing how much God has forgiven us, our forgiveness of others will be natural and easier. We forgive as the Scripture requires us to, harboring no anger or grudges against others. Forgive Every Debtor? On June 17, 2015, 21-yearold Dylann Roof walked into the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston, South Carolina. For about an hour, he listened as the small Wednesday night group discussed the Scriptures. Then he stood up and pulled out a gun and began shooting. Nine church members died as a result. Tw o d a y s l a t e r R o o f appeared in court, and several family members of those slain addressed him. One person, whose mother was one of the victims, stated, “You took some t hing ver y pr ec io us from me.… But I forgive you.” Another person in mourning
added, “I am very angry. But [my sister] taught me that we are the family that love built. We have no room for hating, so we have to forgive.” Some may question the appropriateness of extending forgiveness in cases that do not involve repentance (Luke 17:3, 4). But a more basic issue here is the willingness to forgive. Hard as they may be, Jesus’ instructions regarding forgiveness aren’t framed as optional. To have God’s forgiveness, we must forgive others. Let these examples inspire and motivate selfexamination: Whom do you need to forgive today? —A. S. B. For Ourselves (v. 15) 15. “But if you do not forgive others their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins.” Jesus ends with a warning. If you bypass step one of forgiving others, don’t expect step two, the Father’s forgiveness. Don’t miss the point. This is not some sort of bargain we are making with God, as though he must forgive us if we forgive others. It is a request, a plea to God to help us have a spirit of forgiveness. Forgiveness, like love, is hard (compare Matthew 5:44; Luke 6:28; Acts 7:59, 60). We need God’s help, and he’s just the one to give it! What Do You Think? What would be your starting point for encouraging a person who struggles to extend forgiveness to one who has harmed him or her? Digging Deeper Would that starting point differ depending on the nature of the harm (emotional, physical, financial, etc.)? Why, or why not? Conclusion A. Proclaiming the Kingdom Matthew’s text of the model prayer has been prayed by Christians since the earliest days of the church. It’s a s i m p l e p r a y e r, w i t h a n introduction, seven petitions within four couplets, and a closing pronouncement. Each element teaches about God and how to relate to him in prayer. Jesus’ teaching shows us how we can assess our prayer lives. We need to acknowledge God as our Father, who loves us and gives us what we need. In that light, we need to be completely honest before him, concerned about his will and power not our own standing with others. Moment by moment we need to rely on him to provide what we need for life and for spiritual wholeness. When we pray for the coming of the Father ’s kingdom, we pray for the coming of a king. When we proclaim the kingdom of Heaven, we

centered temptation regularly confronts us. Like so many of us unfortunately, we focus on self-satisfaction. Satan tried to distract Jesus and to persuade Him to make provision for Himself since He is the Son of God. We have to be mindful that the enemy is very cunning and attempts to distract and side line us out of God’s perfect will. We must be mindful that the mission assignment that God gave us was not for ourselves, but definitely for others. Fret not for we are included in their
Mission Assignment, which means God’s plan is to provide for us through them. So, don’t be consumed with thinking only of yourself. At the right time, angels (people) will come to minister to us just as they came and ministered to Jesus. (Matt. 4:11-Then the devil left Him, and angels came and ministered to Him.). But we must trust God, hold on and wait until the Lord’s perfect timing for our deliverance. We cannot listen to Satan whose objective is to steal, kill and destroy and to
bring shame of the Kingdom of God. So Know who your God is, who you are, who’s you are and know that even though you have rights and benefits, they are to be subjected to the perfect will and timing of God. Then we can be assured that whatsoever we need He shall supply it in Jesus’ precious name. So, allow your lifestyle through obedience proclaim that you are a son and daughter of God. We must be submissive to His will, timing and how the Father desires the outcome of
situations. Thank you, Lord that you did not succumb to the voice of the enemy which would have deprived us of salvation and fellowship with the Father. John 10:4-And when he brings out his own sheep, he goes before them; and the sheep follow him, for they know his voice. Jesus refused to listen to the enemy who tried to persuade him to remedy his hunger out of sync with God’s plan. We must learn the heart and voice of God to be in His perfect will. Yes, we
are the sons and daughters of God with many benefits. However, at all times, we must be submitted to the Father’s will and timing. ours is not the kind we try to show before God in prayer, but the kind we carry with us, and carry out, in our ordinar y conduc t. The seemingly insignificant acts of daily life are the tests of eternity,
because they prove what spirit possesses us. It is in our most unguarded moments that we truly show who we are and what we are made of. To know a truly humble person, you must follow that one
in the common course of daily life. This is what Jesus taught. He gave them an example when He washed their feet. He taught His lessons of humility by demonstration. Humility before God is nothing if
it is not proven in humility before others. It is so in the teaching of Paul. To the Romans he writes, “Honor one anot her ab ove yourselves” (Romans 12:10); “Do sermon corner continued on page 11

And to the Corinthians: “Love”—and there is no love without humility as its root—“does not boast, it is not proud.... It is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered” (1 Corinthians 13:4–5). To the Galatians: “Serve one another in love (Galatians 5:13). Let us not become conceited, provoking and envying each other” (Galatians 5:26). To the Ephesians, immediately after the three wonderful chapters on the heavenly life, he said, “Live a life... completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love” (Ephesians 4:1–2); “Always giving thanks.... Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ” (Ephesians 5:20–21). To the Philippians: “Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves” (Philippians 2:3). “Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus: “Who... made himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant... he humbled himself ” (Philippians 2:5–8). And to the Colossians: “C l ot he you rs elve s w it h compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. Bear with each other and forgive whatever grievances you may have against one another. Forgive as the Lord forgave you” (Colossians 3:12). It is in our relationships with one another, in our treatment of each other, that true lowliness of mind and a heart of humility are seen. Our humility before God has no value except as it prepares us to reveal the humility of Jesus to our fellowmen. Let us study humility in daily life in light of these words. The humble person seeks at all times to live up to the rule “Honor one another above yourselves; serve one another; consider others better than yourselves; submit to one another.” The question is often asked how we can count others better than ourselves when we see
that they are far below us in wisdom, in holiness, in natural gifts, or in grace received. The question proves at once how little we understand what real lowliness of mind is. True humility comes when before God we see ourselves as nothing, have put aside self, and let God be all. The soul that has done this, and can say, “I have lost myself in finding you,” no longer compares itself with others. It has given up forever any thought of self in God’s presence; it meets its fellowmen as one who is nothing and seeks nothing for itself; who is a servant of God and for His sake is a servant of all. A faithful servant may be wiser than his master and yet retain the true spirit and posture of a servant. The humble man looks upon every child of God, the most weak and unworthy, and honors him and prefers him as a son of the King. The spirit of Him who washed the disciples’ feet makes it a joy to be the least, to be servants of one another. The humble person feels no jealousy or envy. He can praise God when others are preferred and blessed before him. He can hear others praised and himself forgotten, because in God’s presence he has learned to say with Paul, “I am nothing.” He has received the spirit of Jesus, who pleased not himself and sought not His own honor as the spirit of his life. Amid temptations to impatience and irritableness, to hard thoughts and sharp words that come in response to the failings and sins of fellowChristians, the humble person carries the oft-repeated injunction in his heart and shows it in his life: “Forbearing one another, and forgiving one another, even as the Lord forgave you.” He has learned that in putting on the Lord Jesus he puts on the heart of compassion, kindness, humility, meekness, and longsuffering. Jesus has taken the place of self, and it is not an impossibility to forgive as Jesus forgave. His humility does not consist merely in thoughts or words of self-depreciation, but, as Paul puts it, in “a heart of humility,” the sweet and lowly gentleness recognized as the mark of the Lamb of God. In striving after the higher experiences of the Christian life, the believer is often in danger of seeking the more visible virtues, such as joy, boldness, zeal, contempt of the world, self-sacrifice—even the old Stoics taught and practiced these—rather than the gentler graces, those which are more distinctly connected with Jesus’ cross and death to self: poverty of spirit, meekness, humility, lowliness. Therefore, let us put on a heart of compassion, kindness, humility, meekness, long-suffering; and let us prove our Christlikeness not only in our zeal for saving the lost but also in our relationships with others—forbearing and forgiving one another, even as the Lord forgave us. Let us study the Bible portrait of the most humble man that ever lived—the Lord Jesus. And let us ask our brethren, and the world, whether they recognize in us the likeness to the original. Let us be content with nothing less than taking each of these texts as the promise of what God
will work in us, as the revelation of what the Spirit of Jesus will put within us. Allow each failure and shortcoming to only the more quickly turn us to the meek and lowly Lamb of God in the assurance that where He is enthroned in the heart, His humility and gentleness will be the streams of living water that flow from within us. George Foxe said, “I knew Jesus, and He was very precious to my soul, but I found something in me that would not keep sweet and patient and kind. I did what I could to keep it down, but it was there. I besought Jesus to do something for me, and when I gave Him my will, He came to my heart, and took out all that would not be sweet, all that would not be kind, all that would not be patient, and then He shut the door.” Once again, let me repeat what I have said before. I feel deeply that we have very little concept of what the church suffers as a result of its lack of humility—the self-abasement that makes room for God to prove His power. A Christian who was acquainted with mission stations of various societies, expressed his deep sorrow that in some cases the spirit of love and forbearance was sadly lacking. Men and women who could choose their own circle of friends, joined together in fellowship with those of contrary opinions, making it difficult to bear and to love and to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. And those who should have been encouragers became a hindrance to the work. It appeared the lack of humility was the cause of much of the difficulty.
Humility always seeks, like Jesus, to be the servant, the helper, and the comforter of others, even to the lowest and most unworthy. Why is it that those who have joyfully given themselves up for Christ find it so hard to give themselves up for fellow Christians? It seems that the church has failed to teach its people the importance of humility—that it is the first of the virtues, the best of all the graces and powers of the Spirit. It has failed to show that a Christlike humility is what is needed and is also in the realm of possibility. But let us not be discouraged. Rather, let the discovery of the lack of this grace stir us up to greater expectation from God. Let us look upon everyone who tries us as God’s means of grace, God’s instrument for our purification, for our exercise of the humility of Jesus. May we have true faith in the sufficiency of God and admit to the inefficiency of self, that by God’s power we will serve one another in l o v e .
