NEW HOPE BAPTIST CHURCH CALLS NEW PASTOR

REV. LARRY D. HOOKS II

Historic New Hope Bap-

tist Church of Los Angeles has called Reverend Larry D Hooks II of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma to serve as its fifth pastor. Hooks assumed his duty as pastor of New Hope on Sunday March 10, 2013 and delivered his first sermon to the congregation. New Hope was previously pastored by Reverend J.S. McKnight of Houston, Texas from 1978 to 2011. After McKnight’s retirement in 2011, associate pastor Reverend Clifford Johnson led New Hope until the pastor vacancy

was filled. Reverend Johnson charged the church to form a pulpit search committee to find New Hope’s next leader. After much prayer, dedication, and a year long process conducted by the pulpit search committee, Rev. Hooks was called to pastor New Hope. Reverend Larry Hooks brings over 20 years of experience in Christian Ministry to New Hope. He received his calling in 1990 while serving in the United States Military. After answering his call to ministry, Rev.

Hooks received formal education in Christian Seminary, and used his background in social counseling to promote the Christian Faith. Hooks has served in clergies, and pastored churches in Texas and his native state of Oklahoma. He is active in youth ministry, community outreach, Christian Education, and missionary activities both in the United States and abroad. New Hope Baptist Church was founded in Los Angeles in 1906 and has remained as

a strong presence within the community. The church seeks to expand its Christian Outreach under the leadership of Pastor Hooks into the future. Installation services for Pastor Hooks are still pending, but details will be shared at a later date. For more information about New Hope Baptist Church of Los Angeles and the new pastor Reverend Larry D Hooks II, please contact the church office at 323-232-4326 or email: newhbc@pacbell.net. ONE FAITH FELLOWSHIP’S NUGGETS FOR THE SOUL SO, WHAT DOES THAT MEAN? Romans 12:1--And so, dear brothers and sisters, I plead with you to give your bodies (includes our spirit, soul, flesh and mind) to God because of all He has done for you. Let them be a living and holy sacrifice—the kind He will find acceptable. This is truly the way to worship Him. (NLT) That means: We will not want to make decisions and live our lives simply out of our desires, but will consult the Lord God Almighty for direction. We will not give in to our desires to go any and all places; but will examine what impact our decisions will have on glorifying Daddy-God! We will not

obey the undisciplined desires of our body that would attempt to convince us that we don’t have to keep our bodies under subjection or that it doesn’t “Take All of That” to be holy and acceptable unto our God. We will overrule our minds which would prevent us from having quiet times with the Lord. We will tell ourselves NO, NO, NO when our flesh is screaming YES, YES, YES for wrong choices to be made! We will choose not to hold on to unforgiveness and hatred against those who have done us wrong; but will humble ourselves and ask for Daddy-God’s help to

and interests for those persons who are in committed relationships and respect their relationship unions. We will be careful of what we say and how we say it, so as not to wound one another with our words. We will really and truly live Christ-like lifestyles realizing that God is watching us and others are making eternal decisions based on how we “demonstrate” our eternal decisions. We will embrace the invitation to trust Jesus and to believe that greater is He that is in us than he that is in the world. We will be mature and realize that “Life Challenges” (trials, tribulations, sorrows, etc.) will

occur in our lives; however we will choose to handle them in a dignified faith manner, yetpossessing joy, hope and peace in our God. We will entrust the care, saving of and deliverance of our family into the hands of the Lord; realizing that 1) Our family members have free wills to choose their decision to serve God or not. 2) That the Holy Spirit will do ALL THAT HE CAN TO PERSUADE THEM to choose Jesus as He did to draw us to Jesus. We will continue to seek to grow and mature to become more

PASTOR MICHAEL METTERS

2013!!!! Beginning Wednesday, March 20th through Friday, March 22nd, at 7:30 p.m. nightly, we will be blessed with seeds of wisdom sown by three of God’s most powerful,

prolific, and profound Pastors. Pastor R.A. Williams of the McCoy Memorial B.C. will prepare the soil in a way that no one can! Hundreds and hundreds of preachers across

this nation have sat at his feet to be taught the spiritual intricacies on proclaiming God’s Word. We are blessed to have him this year! Our “Pastor’s Pastor”, Pastor Michael J. Metters of the Faith Way Baptist Church, often referred to as “the weeping Preacher” and compared to the prophet Jeremiah, will plant soul-breaking seeds on Thursday. Pastor Metters’ “commitment to spiritual excellence” shows through in the reputation he has built throughout the church community far and wide. Can it get any better? Pastor Melvin V. Wade of the Mount Moriah B.C. will provide the water to quench your spiritual thirst. He needs no introduction, for his unique delivery of God’s Word has left many “in awe”, and asking the question, “Sir, what must I do to be saved”. We assure you that your spirit man and your physical man will blossom to colorful heights that you had not even imagined as a result of this enlightening experience. You’re next in line for your breakthrough at 4200 South Hooper Avenue in the City of the Angels. Rev. Elton L. Johnson, Pastor; “I’m Wright About It” reporting exclusively for Metro B.C.

Luke 22:14 And when the hour was come, he sat down, and the twelve apostles with him. 15 And he said unto them, With desire I have desired to eat this passover with you before I suffer: 16 For I say unto you, I will not any more eat thereof, until it be fulfilled in the kingdom of God. 17 And he took the cup, and gave thanks, and said, Take this, and divide it among yourselves: 18 For I say unto you, I will not drink of the fruit of the vine, until the kingdom of God shall come. 19 And he took bread, and gave thanks, and brake it, and gave unto them, saying, This is my body which is given for you: this do in remembrance of me. 20 Likewise also the cup after supper, saying, This cup

is the new testament in my blood, which is shed for you. 21 But, behold, the hand of him that betrayeth me is with me on the table. 22 And truly the Son of man goeth, as it was determined: but woe unto that man by whom he is betrayed! 23 And they began to enquire among themselves, which of them it was that should do this thing. 24 And there was also a strife among them, which of them should be accounted the greatest. 25 And he said unto them, The kings of the Gentiles exercise lordship over them; and they that exercise authority upon them are called benefactors. 26 But ye shall not be so: but he that is greatest among you, let him be as the younger; and he that is chief, as he that doth serve. 27 For whether is greater, he that sitteth at meat, or he that serveth? is not he that sitteth at meat? but I am among you as he that serveth. 28 Ye are they which have continued with me in my temptations. 29 And I appoint unto you a kingdom, as my Father hath appointed unto me; 30 That ye may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom, and sit on thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel.

IN FOCUS Since they were in first grade, Irene and Aisha were best friends. They did everything together. When they went away to college in different states, they visited each other frequently. After graduation, they both returned home to Georgia and obtained good paying jobs. Irene believed in volunteering and helping the needy. As a nurse, she provided free health screenings in the community and at her church. Irene thought it was important to give back considering God had blessed her with a good job. Aisha felt differently. Even though Aisha had a good job as a certified public accountant, she felt that she should get paid for everything related to the work she did. This caused a strain in Irene and Aisha’s friendship. One day, Aisha accompanied Irene to a community health screening. She was so overwhelmed when she saw how grateful the people were for the free health screenings that she volunteered to help Irene that day. A few months later, Aisha began to offer free financial advice to those who came to the community health screenings. We all are called to be God’s servants. In today’s lesson, we will examine how Jesus’ sacrifice on our behalf was an act of service. THE PEOPLE, PLACES AND TIMES Jerusalem. Jerusalem was both the religious and the political seat of Palestine, and the place where the Messiah was expected to arrive. It is located 14 miles west of the Dead Sea, 33 miles east of the Mediterranean. It is 3,800 feet above the level of the Dead Sea. The temple was located there, and many Jewish families from all across the world traveled to Jerusalem during the important feasts. The temple sat on a hill overlooking the city. Solomon had built the first temple on this same site almost 1000 years earlier (949 B.C.), but the Babylonians destroyed that temple (2 Kings 25). The temple was rebuilt in 515 B.C., and Herod the Great enlarged and remodeled it. Jesus spent a lot of time in Jerusalem at the temple teaching and preaching. Religious leaders often challenged His authority and teachings at the temple. After the death and resurrection of Christ, Jerusalem became the focal point for most events connected with Christianity, beginning with the day of Pentecost and including much of the history contained in the Acts of the Apostles. In A.D. 70, the Romans destroyed the temple, the city, and its inhabitants with fire. The Feast of Unleavened Bread. The Feast of the Unleavened Bread immediately followed the Passover and lasted seven days during the month of Nisan (March–April). On each of these days, after the morning sacrifice, a sacrifice in relation to the feast was presented. Unleavened bread alone was eaten

and the Israelites removed all yeast from their homes (Exodus 12:15-20; 13:6-8; Leviticus 23:6; Deuteronomy 16:3-8). In the context of the exodus from Egypt, eating bread without yeast signified the haste of their preparation to depart. Moreover, yeast was not used in most grain offerings to God (Leviticus 2:11). Yeast sometimes symbolized sin. A little yeast will affect the whole loaf, just as a little sin can destroy a whole life. A holy convocation and rest from work, with the exception of preparing food, were celebrated on the first and seventh days of the feast. BACKGROUND The Passover and Festival of Unleavened Bread were approaching. All Jewish males 12 and older had to go to Jerusalem, but the chief priests and scribes felt it would not be a good time to begin their plan to kill Jesus. They knew the large crowds, who came for the Passover, could rise up and stone them for hurting Jesus. So they tried to figure out a way to kill Him in the most secretive manner. However, they needed someone to help them. Satan entered the heart of Judas, leading Judas to conspire with the priests and scribes to betray Jesus for money, 30 pieces of silver (Luke 22:5). Waiting for the right time, he joined the disciples, who were in Bethany, preparing for Passover. Jesus arranged to celebrate Passover in the upper room of a house with the disciples. Peter and John went ahead to Jerusalem and prepared the meal for them to share. IN DEPTH 1. Institution of the Lord’s Supper (Luke 22:14-20) Because they had put blood on their doorposts, Passover celebrated God passing over the Israelites’ homes and not killing the firstborn males and animals (Exodus 12:1-13). The Passover meal began the Feast of Unleavened Bread. Peter and John secured a lamb, killed it, and prepared it for the Passover celebration. They also purchased unleavened bread, wine, and herbs. These were all necessary items for the meal. They made sure everything was ready for Jesus and the other disciples when they arrived from Bethany. Once they arrived, on the second night, Jesus and the apostles gathered together for the Passover meal. Judas was present with them. He carefully planned the best time for him to betray Jesus and turn Him over to the officials. It had been prophesied that Jesus, the Messiah, would be betrayed (Psalm 41:9;

AIM for Change

By the end of the lesson, we will: RECOGNIZE that even Jesus believed in service; REFLECT on the sacrificial elements of the Lord’s Supper; and SHARE the sacrifices of our Lord with others.

Keep In Mind:

“But ye shall not be so: but he that is greatest among you, let him be as the younger; and he that is chief, as he that doth serve” (Luke 22:26).

Focal verses:

KJV

Zechariah 11:12-13; Matthew 20:18; 26:20-25; Acts 1:16, 20). The people had offered praises of “Hosanna, Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!” as He entered Jerusalem riding on a donkey. Yet, they would eventually cry out for His crucifixion. In His death and shed blood, Jesus symbolizes the slain Passover Lamb. Jesus said to the disciples, “With desire I have desired to eat this passover with you before I suffer: For I say unto you, I will not any more eat thereof, until it be fulfilled in the kingdom of God” (Luke 22:15-16). Jesus knew it would be the last time He shared the Passover with the disciples before His death as the slain Lamb of God. His sacrifice gave all of humanity the opportunity to be forgiven and redeemed from the penalty of death and sin. After His death, Jesus would share fellowship with His believers through the Lord’s Supper, until the coming of His new kingdom and the great wedding banquet (Revelation 19:9). The Lord’s Supper is taken in remembrance of Christ’s sacrifice of His body and blood on our behalf. There are four cups of wine drank at the Passover. Over each cup of wine, a blessing is pronounced or the person gives thanks. This is the first cup that Jesus shares with the disciples (Luke 22:17-18). Jesus once again proclaimed that He would not drink wine with the disciples again until His kingdom comes. Afterward, Jesus “took bread, and gave thanks, and brake it, and gave unto them, saying, This is my body which is given for you: this do in remembrance of me. Likewise also the cup after supper, saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood, which is shed for you” (vv. 19-20). This passage begins the account of the Lord’s Supper. It is important to note that Luke mentions two cups of wine, but Matthew and Mark mention one (Matthew 26:27-29; Mark 14:23-25). 2. The Betrayal (vv. 21-23) After the Passover meal and Lord’s Supper was over, Jesus said, “But, behold, the hand of him that betrayeth me is with me on the table. And truly the Son of man goeth, as it was determined: but woe unto that man by whom he is betrayed! And they began to enquire among themselves, which of them it was that should do this thing” (vv. 21-23). Here, Jesus let His disciples know that one amongst them, that had celebrated Passover and the Lord’s Supper at the table, had betrayed Him. The disciples became suspicious about who would do this to their leader. In Matthew and John’s accounts, they identify Judas Iscariot as the betrayer (Matthew 26:25; John 13:26). Jesus knew His destiny of death on the Cross was predetermined by His Father. It was not unexpected. Jesus had come into the world to save us from sin. This could only be accomplished through His death and resurrection. Satan used Judas to fulfill God’s plans. Judas realized that he was wrong for betraying Jesus, but his actions could not be reversed. Thus, he committed suicide (Matthew 27:3-5).

3. Servant Leader (vv. 24-30) Jesus had just told His disciples about His impending death when a dispute arose among them over who was the greatest (Luke 22:24). They were only concerned about themselves. It is very easy to lose focus and start to think about ourselves as superior to others. The disciples were a group of strong-willed men who felt they were very important. This also happens in today’s churches. Jesus told the disciples the one who serves is the greatest (v. 26). We can look to Jesus as the example. Even though He could rightly claim His position as Messiah, He came into the world to minister to us because we need Him. He did not need us. Therefore, we are to bow down and serve Him. By giving His life, He exemplified servanthood. We, too, should humble ourselves and serve others as Jesus did for us. Then one day, we will sit together in God’s kingdom and celebrate at the wedding feast with the Lamb of God (v. 30). SEARCH THE SCRIPTURES 1. What did Jesus mean when He told His disciples He was going to suffer (Luke 22:15)? 2. How does Jesus define greatness (vv. 24-27)? DISCUSS THE MEANING It is very easy to think we are more important than others. The truth is God wants us to humble ourselves and serve the people around us. How does selfishness and

pride separate us from God? How does Jesus’ sacrifice of His body and blood exemplify servanthood? LESSONS IN OUR SOCIETY

There are many people who are leaders but not servants. They dictate to others what to do and demand complete obedience. God wants us to be servants. In our service, we should show humility and love to others. Jesus is our example of a servant-leader. His ministry on earth consisted of teaching, preaching, and healing the sick and other miracles. Then Jesus offered His body as a sacrifice for all humanity. He did not do these things for personal glory. Jesus wanted His Father to be glorified. Everything we do and say should be done for the glory of God. MAKE IT HAPPEN Every day and likely everywhere we go, we see people in need. Yet, we either ignore them or tell someone else to help them. Some of us would rather not humble ourselves and reach out to help. To do something for others may ease us out of our comfort zones. Yet Jesus gave up His throne in heaven and came to earth to save us. He served without thought of Himself. What are you willing to do to make a difference in someone’s life, the community, and the world? Start today by looking around your church and paying attention to what needs to be done. Commit to doing one thing every week that could make a difference in the community, in your church, and in the world. in the guest chamber (also guest room or upper room) of a Jewish residence, the location of which Jesus had providentially selected (vv. 9-12). The Greek word for “guestchamber” in verse 11 (see also Mark 14:14) was kataluma (kat-AL -oo-mah), while “a large upper room” (see Luke 22:12) was referred to as anogeon (an-OGUE-ehon). A kataluma is the same Greek word Luke chose for 2:7, referring to the already occupied guest chamber that caused Joseph and Mary to sleep downstairs with the animals at the birth of Jesus. This location is also translated “inn.” (Modern inns were unknown in the 1st century). 15 And he said unto them, With desire I have desired to eat this passover with you before I suffer: 16 For I say unto you, I will not any more eat thereof, until it be fulfilled in the kingdom of God. Jesus’ statement in Luke 22:15, “With desire I have desired”, which is also translated “I have eagerly desired,” emphasizes the depth of His feelings. It is reinforced twice with His strong words about never again eating the bread, and in verse 18 never again drinking from the cup, until some point in the future when all would be fulfilled in His coming kingdom. The synoptic parallels of verse 18, similar to verse 16, are found in Matthew 26:29 and Mark 14:25. New Testament believers can still relate to the disciples in the Upper Room as we continue to this day to observe the Lord’s Supper “until he comes” (1 Corinthians 11:26, NIV). Jesus’ enigmatic reference to the future kingdom soon was to become painfully clear to the disciples. Unlike any previous Passover, this time Jesus’ body, the spotless and unblemished Lamb of God, would replace traditional Passover lambs (1 Corinthians 5:7).

1-888-290-7277 17 And he took the cup, and gave thanks, and said, Take this, and divide it among yourselves: 18 For I say unto you, I will not drink of the fruit of the vine, until the kingdom of God shall come. Luke differs from Mark in the number and order of cups. Commentators seem to agree that the use of more than one cup, here and in verse 20 both before and after the meal, indicate the standard Passover tradition that used four cups at specific times during the ceremony. The first cup is with the opening benediction; the second cup is after explaining the Passover and singing the Hallel (Psalm 113114); the third cup follows the meal—which primarily consisted of unleavened bread (representing the Israelites’ haste to leave Egypt), lamb (from which came the lamb’s blood on the doorposts), and bitter herbs (representing the bitterness of slavery); and the fourth cup follows the conclusion of the Hallel. Luke’s passage records Jesus’ taking the second and third cups before and after the meal but without a benediction or singing. 19 And he took bread, and gave thanks, and brake it, and gave unto them, saying, This is my body which is given for you: this do in remembrance of me. 20 Likewise also the cup after supper, saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood, which is shed for you. To this day, Jews still celebrate Passover with the same thin, unleavened “bread,” which in Greek is artos (ARtos). Jesus’ giving of thanks, which in Greek is eucharisteo (yoo-khar-is-TEH-o), is in Walter Liefeld’s words, “the source of the beautiful word Eucharist” (Matthew, Mark, Luke, 1027). Only Luke adds the words “given for you” for the bread, representing Je-

NEWS@RAISETHEPRAISENEWS.NET sus’ body and “shed for you” for the wine representing His blood. (See also John 6:11; Acts 27:35.) Unlike all other Passovers, with these words, Jesus ushers in the New Testament, the new covenant, ratified in blood as were all covenants between God and men (Exodus 24:8). The word here translated “testament” in the Greek is diatheke (dee-athAY-kay) and can mean either testament or covenant (also an arrangement, compact, disposition, or will). The KJV uniquely translates the same Greek word “covenant” when referring to Old Testament usage, and “testament” when referring to New Testament usage—with the exception of references in Hebrews 9:4; 10:16, 29. Liefeld writes, “‘The new covenant’ . . . carried with it the assurance of forgiveness through Jesus’ blood shed on the cross and the inner work of the Holy Spirit in motivating us and enabling us to fulfill our covenantal responsibility” (Matthew, Mark, Luke, 1027). Jesus is well aware of His mission on earth, and soon He will ask the Father to take the “cup” (of suffering) from Him if possible (see synoptic parallels in Matthew 26:39; Mark 14:36; Luke 22:42). Liefeld writes, “The suffering motif is consistent with Jesus’ understanding of his mission as the Suffering Servant” (Matthew, Mark, Luke, 1027). See also Isaiah 53:11. 21 But, behold, the hand of him that betrayeth me is with me on the table. 22 And truly the Son of man goeth, as it was determined: but woe unto that man by whom he is betrayed! 23 And they began to enquire among themselves, which of them it was that should do this thing. Judas was at the Last Supper with Jesus and the disciples. The fact that it was possible

for a traitor to be so close to the inner circle, even to participate in the initiation of the new covenant (even if he apparently did not finish the meal), should serve as fair warning to all that it is possible for the enemy to infiltrate the ranks of the faithful and even to “break bread” with them. Fred Craddock called this a “continuing warning” (Luke, 257). Multiple scholars agree that there is a deliberate interplay with the dual mention of the Son of man being betrayed by a man, which involved two different uses in verse 22 of the Greek word for “man,” anthropos (ANTH-ro-pos). That the betrayal was “determined” makes use of a Greek word, horizo (hor-ID-zo), meaning to appoint, decree, or ordain. Liefeld believes the point is that even though the events were ordained, Judas is still responsible for his role: “Divine sovereignty is balanced by human responsibility; so Jesus pronounces a ‘woe’ on the betrayer” (Matthew, Mark, Luke, 1027). 24 And there was also a strife among them, which of them should be accounted the greatest. 25 And he said unto them, The kings of the Gentiles exercise lordship over them; and they that exercise authority upon them are called benefactors. Yet another “continuing warning” comes with Jesus’ correction of the disciples’ immature understanding of greatness in the kingdom of God. Any future partaker of the table would do well to take the inherent warning—certainly the church today is not immune to the temptation to love power and prestige over service and humility. Fred Craddock calls this kind of self-serving behavior an “infectious disease” (Luke, 257).

The argument the disciples were having was about who would sit where, considering ancient seating customs put the most honored and important guests the closest to the host. The example of Jesus’ own life gives weight to His teaching on the subject—He started the meal by washing their feet, a task relegated only to servants (John 13:416); He has come to serve, not to be served (Matthew 20:28); and His whole purpose is to do His Father’s will (John 8:28). 26 But ye shall not be so: but he that is greatest among you, let him be as the younger; and he that is chief, as he that doth serve. 27 For whether is greater, he that sitteth at meat, or he that serveth? is not he that sitteth at meat? but I am among you as he that serveth. In the kingdom of God, true greatness doesn’t seek self-veneration but is content with a lower place. In God’s kingdom, everything is upside down and inside out; thus the servant, not the king, is called the benefactor. It must have been humbling for them to have their shallow argument exposed, especially when Jesus Himself had just washed their feet (John 13:12-17). As Craddock notes, “True exaltation is, therefore, God’s gift to those who faithfully endure the hardships of Christ” (Luke, 258). Does the church truly understand and practice the lesson on service with as much reverence as they give to the Lord’s Supper from which it came? 28 Ye are they which have continued with me in my temptations. 29 And I appoint unto you a kingdom, as my Father hath appointed unto me; 30 That ye may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom, and sit on thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel. Occasionally, some believers take the matter of being future judges too much to heart, thereby subverting the original intent. The context of Jesus’ message is one of

a leader about to leave His followers, and He is leaving them with final instructions, exhortations, and encouragements. The context of believers becoming judges happens only when God exalts men and women because of their humble service while on earth. The very principle is negated by present pride over future rewards for humility and service. The symbolism of Passover could not have been more perfect for the timing of the Passion of Christ. Craddock captures the essence: “This is no unimportant detail, for the Jewish Passover not only serves as backdrop for the Christian Table of Remembrance but the celebration of liberation from slavery in Egypt provides directly and indirectly meanings for the Lord’s Supper” (Luke, 253). In retrospect, believers today know that God planned far in advance the details of both events, including the intentional interweaving of symbolism. At the time, none of the characters on the ancient stages were fully aware of the mean-

ORDER OF THE DAY PASTOR RODERICK WALKER Tabernacle of Praise Baptist Church Streaming Live at www.BMCLive.com ing of the events occurring before their eyes. Every element of the Passover meal contained reminders of Egypt—just as the elements of the Exodus carried prototypes of Jesus’ Passion. The Lord’s Supper—also known as Communion (1 Corinthians 10:16) and Eucharist (Luke 22:17)—is only one of two sacraments, or ordinances, that Jesus personally instituted. Just as humans are inherently sinful, we also are inherently forgetful; thus the need for Jesus’ instructions to keep this memorial alive so we will always remember His sacrifice. Far beyond the actual remembrance of Jesus’ death, however, simple fellowship is often called “breaking bread” to this day. In Craddock’s words, “Because of this last supper, no meal among disciples is just a meal because no loaf is just bread, no cup is just wine” (Luke, 255). As well, there are futuristic meanings for the Passover, found in Jesus’ prophetic words about His coming kingdom. Thus the Last Supper simultaneously looks back to the original event in Egypt when the death angel passed over Israelite homes that bore lamb’s blood on the doorposts and looks ahead to the final Passover meal. That is the messianic banquet, known as “the marriage supper of the Lamb” (Revelation 19:9). Just as God once liberated His people from physical slavery and formed a covenant with them, Jesus’ blood in the new covenant releases captives of sin and death from their spiritual bondage.

Would Jesus Use A Handgun or An Assault Weapon?

REV. DR. MARK WHITLOCK

A 43 year old African American father was shot by guns nine times in the back and some fifty six bullets riddle the yellow SUV like in the movie Bonnie and Clyde. When the casket closed following the eulogy, no one asked if the guns were handguns or assault weapons. My hardest task was preventing his 18 year old

son from picking up a gun to murder those who murdered his father. This took place in Orange County, CA one of the safest places in America. There is a shooting or murder taking place every day in ghettos of Los Angeles, CA. The news media never identify the type of guns, but there are family members contemplat-

ing revenge by guns. When is America going to say enough is enough? In a 1999 article published by Gun Owners of America titled “What Does the Bible Say About Gun Control?” The author made the very interesting point that the first murder recorded was when Cain killed his brother Abel. He went on to say that no one legislated rocks and God dealt with the evil doer, Cain, directly making the point that we as a society should deal with those who are intent to kill as opposed to legislating the instrument used to commit the act. I do won-

der what God really has to say about this issue. The Bible says many things. From if the thief is found breaking in, and he is struck so that he dies, there shall be no guilt for his bloodshed, Exodus 22:2 to beloved, never avenge yourselves, but leave it to the wrath of God, for it is written, “vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord,” Romans 12:19. What is a God fearing, 2nd Amendment believing Christian to do? As a community, we need to be clear on the debate we are having. Gun control does not equate constitutional infringement. We as law abiding Americans absolutely have the right to bear arms however, do we have the right to bear militia style weapons? The 2nd Amendment reads “a well regContinued On Page 14 WOULD JESUS ....

Separatism

“There is only one lawgiver and judge, he who is able to save and to destroy. But who are you to judge your neighbor?” – James 4:12 throughout history; the rich from the poor, Jew from Gentile, haves from have not’s, denomination from denomination and ALL as the direct result of the fall of man. Denominational separatism is “thin ice” territory. People who are believers straddle the fence daily regarding their own reliby Andrea Andrews gious beliefs (often with little Separatism is in man’s na- to no biblical merit) and often ture. The government struc- adopt the need to throw dagture is built upon the premise gers & stones at others whose of separatism and has been beliefs are contrary. How is it

that people who say they believe in The Triune God ( Father, Son & Holy Spirit), believe that Jesus IS thee ultimate sacrifice for ALL mankind, and realizes that Jesus Christ IS THEE ONLY WAY to The Father, still do not understand that we are ALL members of one body? There are literally endless scriptures in the Bible addressing “judgment” cast by man; scripture which is quite obviously ignored by those who “say” they love Christ.

Some are even under the false impression that Jesus will ONLY return for the “black” church or “white” church; as if there’s a black or white side of heaven. We’ve spent so much time separating ourselves one from another that we’ve failed to do any of what The Father, Son and Holy Spirit have commanded us to do. How annoyed they must be…Consider this: On the day we are judged by Christ, He will not care how short or tall, fat or skin-

ny, black, white, brown, yellow or red we are. He will not look at our race, nationality, gender, ethnicity nor political affiliation. He will look upon the heart, intent, obedience, selflessness and excellence and review the number of times we opened our mouths to share His Gospel and the souls won as a result of it. to the latter most part of that statement as a platform for anti gun control, but their opposition to regulations came about as late as 1977. In the 1920’s, NRA President Karl T Frederick was a special consultant to the National Conference of

Commissioners on Uniform State Laws and helped to construct the Uniform Firearms Act. The basic model required that no one could carry a concealed handgun in public without a permit from the local police and a permit would

only be granted to a “suitable” person with a “proper reason for carrying” a firearm. It also required gun dealers to report to law enforcement every sale of a handgun and imposed a two-day waiting period on handgun sales. In the 1930’s,

when Congress was considering the National Firearms Act of 1934, the NRA supported the law and finally in the 1960’s, after the assassination

Serve the Children Benefit Concert

DR. JOYCE HARRELL

If the Lord says the same, I will be going on my 4th missionary trip to Monrovia, Liberia, West Africa. In preparation for this trip, there will be a benefit concert on March 23 at 4:00 p.m., at Mt. Tabor Missionary Baptist Church (6614 S. Western Ave. Los Angeles). The funds raised at this concert will be directed towards traveling expenses,

laptops and printers for the All God’s Children’s Schools, and funding to the Agape Pastor’s Network to go towards roofs, flooring and will cover expenses to go out into the bush to reach those who do not know Christ. You may not be able to personably go out on the mission field, but you can still play an intricate part in sending those that can and also be

a blessing to those in the utter most part of the world, who are determined to spread the gospel of Jesus Christ. If you are unable to attend the concert you can still be a blessing by sending a tax deductible donation to: Serve the Children, 4423 Point Fosdick Drive NW, Suite 202, Gig Harbor, WA 98335, earmarked for Dr. Joyce’s Mission Trip. God

bless you and I hope to see you at the concert! Dr. Joyce is a lay-person, under the leadership of Dr. Ticey M. Brown, at Mt. Tabor Missionary Baptist Church, where she serves as the Strategic Leadership Director. Dr. Joyce’s mission is to develop servant-leaders and enhance ministries within the Church. Dr. Joyce’s contact info is, joyce-harrell@sbcglobal.net or (714)878-4854.

On Your Mark, Get Ready, Get Set, Go (Part II) 1 John 2:5-6 - New King James Version (NKJV)

LADY DR. PHELENCIA A. WHITE

5 But whoever keeps His word, truly the love of God is perfected in him. By this we know that we are in Him. 6 He

who says he abides in Him ought himself also to walk just as He walked. Jesus’ walk did not fit in with the religious elite of His day. In fact, though there was great expectancy for the Messiah’s return, the Jews had constructed, during the years of God’s silence, an image of what The Messiah should look like. In doing so, they also set boundaries on the image they were willing to receive from God. So much

so that when He came, they did not recognize or accept Him. Jesus proclamations of truth as being God in the flesh brought about suffering in all areas of His life…emotionally, physically and spiritually (Isaiah 53:3-5). Jesus had NO FAN CLUB. His life was only celebrated, and that sometimes briefly, by those whom He helped, healed or restored. His walk, as witnessed by His disciples, left such an impres-

sion upon their lives that they were willing to walk as Jesus had walked, too. For even the Apostle Paul recorded his own personal experiences as a reflection of walking in Jesus footsteps in 1 Corinthians 4:913, for there it reads… 9 For I think that God has displayed us, the apostles, last, as men condemned to death; for we have been made a spectacle to the world, both to angels and to men. 10 We are fools for

Christ’s sake, but you are wise in Christ! We are weak, but you are strong! You are distinguished, but we are dishonored! 11 To the present hour we both hunger and thirst, and we are poorly clothed, and beaten, and homeless. 12 And we labor, working with our own hands. Being reviled, we bless; being persecuted, we Continued On Page 15

of President John F. Kennedy, the Executive Vice President of the NRA, Franklin Orth, testified in favor of banning mail order rifles (Lee Harvey Oswald was said to have ordered the rifle that killed President Kennedy from an NRA Rifleman’s Magazine). There was public outraged when the National Black Panther Party carried rifles into the State Capital building in Sacramento, CA. Has the NRA changed….. The NRA of old believed that constitutional rights and regulations could indeed co-exist. Somehow we as a nation, as a community have strayed away from logical, cordial debate and have gravitated to counter-productive divisive thinking. Middle ground will never be found if the belief that like minded thinking means you are one of the good guys and differences in opinion means you are moronic continues. The purpose of a gun is to kill. It may wound, it may maim, but its purpose is to kill. The purpose of a vehicle is to transport, yet we have regulations to operate said vehicle. The purpose of Sudafed is to aid when one is ill, yet identification is needed when purchasing this product. Why is a little more regulation when purchasing guns so intrusive? Why is taking a second, third look at why citizens need assault weapons so alarming? Why are so-called Christians so quickly defending weapons of mass destruction? I subscribe to the point that guns don’t kill people; people kill people. It is also true that you can’t legislate people’s hearts. You can however regulate consequences and opportunities. Violence in this country is more deeply rooted than our fascination with guns. Gun shows attract great crowds of patriots and predators. While the faith based community continues to work on the broken souls of our nation, we need to focus our attention on how to prevent more needless tragedies. The nation lost 20 children that fateful day in Newtown. Let us remember that we lose 20 children every day across this nation to guns. Let’s not forget the countless number of children killed weekly in inner city ghettoes. Let us not forget that families are continuing to grieve while we try to remember what we are arguing about. When is American going to say enough is enough? The better question is when the church is going to say enough is enough. So called conservative Bible believing sold out for Christ Christians march, preach, pray, cry, scream, bomb abortion clinics and, demand new public policy in defense of the life of the unborn fetus, but where is the cacophony of vocal chords for stricter gun control laws to protect the lives of the living. Enough is enough! Would Jesus Use A Handgun or An Assault Weapon? Neither! For God so loved the world that God gave us a Son who used no weapons…..
