DR. DWAYNE E. SHIGG, Ph.D

Greetings, in the name of the Lord. In an effort to service the Christian Community, it is our endeavor to be of service to the pastor by way of empowering newly called and or serious minded assistant and associate ministers. This group of ministers serve, in their churches, at the bequest of their pastors. Wouldn’t it be

a blessing if they had the opportunity and training in how to be of service and value to your pastor? This program is designed to provide just that. Dr. Dwayne E. Shigg, Ph.D authored a book, Preachers 101.Subject matter, things to make you (the newly called, the assistant and or associate) of value to your pastor. Rev. S. “Scuffie” Shigg served as the assistant for a number of years to one of the most demanding, one of the most powerful and one of the most noted pastors of this city, so he knows what it takes to be of value to the pastor. This will be a continuous program presented each 2nd Sunday of the month starting at 7 P.M. There will be a time of lecture and instructions and even a time given for several of the newly called assistants and associated (assigned) to bring a message. The attempt is to strengthen the Church Community by strengthen our pastors, by strengthening the newly called assistants and associates working with the pastors. Those that are interested are ask to call our church office at (323) 778-5438. ONE FAITH FELLOWSHIP’S NUGGETS FOR THE SOUL HOW CAN ANYBODY HATE JESUS? We understand the tremendous challenges of loving or even liking those who are hateful to us! We understand the struggle to embrace those persons who are abusive and belittle us. Also included are those persons whose purpose it is to destroy us emotionally, physically or spiritually. We understand the wrestle of challenge to love those persons who take from us and who don’t love us. However, Jesus is not guilty of any of these horrendous acts. His life has been demonstrated as the ultimate gift of love to us! It was first demonstrated by Him

choosing to leave His Heavenly home for the destination of being crucified on the cross. He came as God knowing all things-the pains and agony of what was before Him, yet He came! Jesus knew ahead of time those who would love Him and those who would never love Him, and in fact hate Him. Nevertheless, Jesus still came to offer Himself as the slain lamb to provide all men with the opportunity to be accepted by God. Jesus came to give us power over all sin and habits we can’t shake on our own; to free us from the grip sin. Jesus came to assist us

in becoming the beloved of His Father, which will ensure an abundant life here on earth and in eternity. Jesus provided the means for our minds to be converted to have the whole-

some, wise and compassionate mindset of Christ. Jesus came not only to enable us to be successful, forgiving and fulfilled; but to also show us the way to bless others. Jesus desires that we are the head and not the tail, the lender and not the borrower. He came to heal the sick, give sight to the blind and to even raise the dead. He came to give us both physical and spiritual sight. Jesus came to reveal His Great, Loving, Faithful and Powerful Father to us; to reveal His glory to and through us. Jesus came to give us joy and peace. He came to be the Truth and Light

to us, so that we might be the light of the world. Jesus’ record has been tried and tested over and over throughout the generations of time; establishing witnesses who will validate His claims. Because Satan, Jesus’ greatest enemy has blinded the eyes and minds of those who have resisted Jesus’ loveoffer, they are the ones who hate Jesus. They have chosen to use their faith to not believe in the Lord, rather than to accept the unchallengeable proof that Jesus HAS PROVIDED. They have chosen to love the decayContinued On Page 14

AIM for Change

By the end of the lesson, we will: UNDERSTAND that God wants all people to know His love; APPRECIATE the value of living by faith; and COMMIT to a closer walk with God.

Acts 2:1 And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. 2 And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. 3 And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them. 4 And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance. 5 And there were dwelling at Jerusalem Jews, devout

men, out of every nation under heaven. 6 Now when this was noised abroad, the multitude came together, and were confounded, because that every man heard them speak in his own language. 7 And they were all amazed and marvelled, saying one to another, Behold, are not all these which speak Galilaeans? 8 And how hear we every man in our own tongue, wherein we were born? 9 Parthians, and Medes, and Elamites, and the dwellers in Mesopotamia, and in Judaea, and Cappadocia, in Pontus, and Asia, 10 Phrygia, and Pamphylia, in Egypt, and in the parts of Libya about Cyrene, and strangers of Rome, Jews and proselytes, 11 Cretes and Arabians, we do hear them speak in our tongues the wonderful works of God. 12 And they were all amazed, and were in doubt, saying one to another, What meaneth this? 13 Others mocking said, These men are full of new wine.

IN FOCUS Gina had enjoyed the company of older people since she was a child. Now, as an adult, she worked taking care of them. She had seen so much heartache. The physical suffering was bad enough, but it was the emotional suffering of abandonment and loneliness that hurt them the most. In the past year, there had been several older members in Gina’s church who had succumbed to poor health and were no longer able to attend services. She genuinely missed seeing their faces in church on Sunday morning. She began to pray for them, and the more she prayed, the greater her burden became. It began to expand beyond the boundaries of her church and extended to the senior people who needed to hear the Gospel of Jesus Christ. The Holy Spirit was at work in Gina’s heart. Surely she wasn’t the only one in her church who saw the need for outreach in this area. Gina spoke with her pastor, and with his prayer and support, she launched a visitation and outreach program for the older people in her community. Today’s story illustrates how the empowerment of the Holy Spirit, at work in one faithful heart, can reach out to lost, hurting souls and unite a community. THE PEOPLE, PLACES AND TIMES Pentecost. The origin of Pentecost precedes the birth, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. It’s one of the seven feasts of Jehovah and one of the three major Pilgrimage Feasts. Pentecost—also called the “Feast of Harvest” and the “Feast of First-fruits”—is celebrated 50 days after Passover on the Sabbath. God presented these holy feasts to Moses, and it was required that the Children of Israel observe them annually (Leviticus 23:5-21). Pentecost is symbolically related to the Jewish holiday Shavuot or the Feast of Weeks, which celebrates Moses receiving the Ten Commandments on Mount Sinai. In the New Testament, Pentecost takes on yet another meaning. Christians celebrate Pentecost as a commemoration of the descent of the Holy Spirit and the outpouring of the gifts of the Spirit. The parallel between Shavuot and Pentecost is apparent in that Shavuot represents the Jews’ freedom from Egyptian slavery while Pentecost represents man’s freedom from slavery to sin. BACKGROUND The celebration of Pentecost, as depicted in the New Testament (Acts 2:1-21), was prophesied in the Old Testament in Joel 2:28-32. Some believe that the Day of Pentecost marked the beginning of the Christian church. The celebration united Jews from many nations; 16 are mentioned. Empowered by the Holy Spirit, the apostles, who were Galileans, preached the Gospel to the Jewish nations in their native languages.

IN DEPTH 1. Jesus’ Appearance to His Disciples B1. Manifestation of the Holy Spirit (Acts 2:1-3) There are two important factors that existed on the Day of Pentecost: (1) the apostles were all gathered together in one place, and (2) they were all on one accord. They knew beforehand that this was going to happen, and they were in complete agreement with it as they anticipated the Spirit’s advent. Compliance with the Holy Spirit and with each other was necessary for the success of the events that were about to unfold. Imagine you are part of a baseball team that’s about to play the tie-breaking game in the World Series. When you arrive at the stadium, you find that your team’s pitcher and catcher didn’t show up. The team players that are present are panicking and bickering among themselves. Can this team play a winning game? Are they going to win the support of their fans? Of course not. The apostles were also a team, and Jesus was their leader. It was vital that God’s team be on one accord in body, mind, and spirit on this history-making Day of Pentecost. The manifestation of the Holy Spirit was not a quiet, natural affair. It was rather an audacious, supernatural event. The Holy Spirit arrived with a loud sound, like that of a strong gush of wind. It was a sound so loud that it filled the place where they were sitting. Its mighty force was heard and felt by everyone present. It’s likely that the surrounding area also heard the arrival of the Holy Spirit. However, to signify that this was a supernatural event, the fixation was on this particular place. There was also visible evidence of the presence of the Holy Spirit in the form of what appeared to be flames that lit upon all of them—not consuming flames. These flames remind us of the burning bush (Exodus 3:2-5). God called to Moses out of a bush that burned but yet was not consumed. In both cases the unquenchable flames represented the presence of the Spirit of God. But at Pentecost, the flames were not untouchable as in the bush in the wilderness. At Pentecost, the flames sat on the head of each believer present. God’s Spirit was coming to indwell each one. 2. Filled with the Holy Spirit (vv. 4-5) Any person who receives salvation also receives the Holy Spirit (Romans 8:9). However, to have the indwelling of the Holy Spirit and to be filled with the Spirit are two different things. After Jesus’ death and res-

urrection, the apostles received the Holy Spirit (John 20:22), but the filling of the Spirit would take place on Pentecost. Upon being filled with the Spirit, the apostles spoke in tongues (Acts 2:4), and it caught the attention of a multitude of Jewish people from many lands that had come for the festival. It was especially strange to them because they all heard their own languages being spoken. The Holy Spirit guides us in our spiritual walk (John 16:13). The more we seek and follow the direction of the Holy Spirit in our life, the more He is able to use us. The Holy Spirit is necessary for us to experience sanctification. The idea of being filled with the Spirit is one of allowing God to have control. It is as though instead of holding on to the steering wheel, you handed God the keys to the car and agreed to go along for the ride. To be filled with the Spirit requires us to be in submission to God so He can direct our lives and transform us. 3. Empowered by the Holy Spirit (vv. 6-12) When the apostles were filled with the Holy Spirit, it was then that He empowered them with the gifts of the Spirit. Gifts of the Spirit should not be confused with the fruit of the Spirit. Gifts of the Spirit enable us to serve others. The fruit of the Spirit develops and grows throughout our life. It is measured by the quality of our Christian walk. The more we delve into God’s Word and apply its teachings to our lives, the more spiritual growth we experience. The more we grow, the more evident the fruit of the Spirit becomes in our life. The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, and temperance (Galatians 5:22-23). On the Day of Pentecost, the apostles were graced with the gift of speaking in tongues. In this event, these Galileans preached the Gospel of Jesus Christ in the native languages of the Jewish people. This was a miracle, an unexplainable and unlikely event that amazed and confused the crowd, and led them to inquire about this strange occurrence. Perhaps we can compare it to the experience of hearing the musical performance of a child prodigy. Despite the mentality of the child, he or she can play the piano as an accomplished composer might. When we witness such a thing, we are amazed and confounded. It is simply beyond our human comprehension. So it was on the Day of Pentecost. 4. Doubting the Holy Spirit (v. 13) Have you ever heard the saying, “there’s one in every crowd”? Well, on the Day of Pentecost, there were more than one. Much like today’s hecklers, the doubters in the crowd mocked the whole affair. They sought to undermine the miracle they were witnessing and explain it away by claiming that the apostles were drunk. The mockers were probably as amazed and confused as everyone else. Possibly to hide their own lack of understanding, they tried to explain a supernatural event as a human occurrence.

SEARCH THE SCRIPTURES 1. What was the second miracle that indicated the presence of the Holy Spirit (Acts 2:3)? 2. When they heard the apostles speaking in different languages, what were the reactions of the Jewish people (vv. 6-7)? 3. In an attempt to explain away the miracle, what did the mockers in the crowds say about the apostles (v. 13)? DISCUSS THE MEANING 1. Why do you think the Holy Spirit made such a grand entrance (Acts 2:2-3)? 2. Do you think the miracle of tongues, on the Day of Pentecost, was in the apostles speaking in different languages or in the Jews hearing the Gospel in their own languages (vv. 4-6)? 3. In today’s In Focus story, we see how the Holy Spirit at work in one heart can reach out to many for the cause of Christ. Gina could have ministered to older adults on her own rather than share her burden with the pastor and other members of her church. How successful would the ministry have been had she chosen to go it alone? Which way would you have done it and why? LESSONS IN OUR SOCIETY

There are so many hurting people in today’s world. Poverty, illness, addiction, violence, injustice, and loneliness are just a few of the problems that plague our society. Even Christians can be overwhelmed when we look around and see all the suffering. It would be

easier to stick our heads in the sand and let someone else deal with it, and many people do just that. One news story reported that a man was beaten by a group of young people after he’d witnessed them committing a crime. The man pulled in to a convenience store across the street. The group of kids, likely fearful that he was going to call the police, beat him, causing serious injury. There were witnesses to this violent attack, but no one did a thing. No one intervened. No one even called the police. The man crawled into his car and drove home and was later admitted to the hospital. No arrests were made. The Holy Spirit empowers us to come out of our comfort zones and to reach out and help others. If you had witnessed the above crime, what would you have done? Would you have intervened or called the police? Why? Why not? MAKE IT HAPPEN When you look around your community, what do you see? Who is hurting, who needs help, and who needs to hear the Gospel of Jesus Christ? There are so many. Are you going to answer the Holy Spirit’s call to action, or are you going to leave the burden for someone else? MORE LIGHT ON TEXT Acts 2:1-13 1 And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. The Greek word for “Pentecost” is pentekoste (pentay-kos-TAY), and it literally means “50th.” The Day of Pentecost was given this name because it fell on the 50th day after the Passover. This day was also referred to as the Feast of Weeks and as “the day of firstfruits” (Numbers 28:26). At the Passover

S

feast, a sheaf from the coming grain harvest was presented and then, at Pentecost, two leavened loaves of the harvest were presented to the Lord as the firstfruits of the completed grain harvest. In later Jewish tradition, it became associated with the giving of the Law of Moses at Mount Sinai, 50 days after the exodus from Egypt. The place where they were together is referred to as “the house” in Acts 2:2. Perhaps this is the same place as that mentioned in 1:13, though there is no way of concluding that definitively. 2 And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. The Greek word for “mighty” is biaios (BEE-ah-yos) and means “violent, forcible.” We are not left in doubt as to the origin of the mighty rushing wind of verse 2. It is from heaven. The Greek word for “wind” is pnoe (pno-AY) and is also translated as “breath.” What took place that day was not from man; it was a supernatural and sovereign act of God. Wind is often used in the Bible in reference to the Holy Spirit, who, in light of Jesus’ promise in 1:8, is represented as the mighty rushing wind that fills the house. The Spirit had come indeed to grant Christ’s people what He promised: power to be His witnesses in Judea (Judaea, KJV), Samaria, and uttermost parts of the earth. The fact that He came on Pentecost gives further significance to the event. Because God already knows the full number of those who are His in Christ, these believers and those to come are appointed as a kind of firstfruits of the full harvest of believers gathered to Christ. 3 And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat

1-888-290-7277 upon each of them. The coming of the Holy Spirit on these early Christians was both audible (the sound of a mighty rushing wind) and visible (appeared as “cloven” or divided tongues of fire). It must have been an amazing experience. The tongues rested on each one of them. No one in the house was excluded from this experience. As He is given to all who believe in the Lord Jesus Christ, the Spirit was given to them all. 4 And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance. Being filled with the Spirit, a repeated experience, is to be distinguished though not disconnected from the baptism of the Spirit, a one-time experience. In the Scriptures, when people were filled with the Spirit, they were enabled to carry out special ministry tasks from the Lord. Here, the filling with the Spirit led to the ability of those gathered in the house to speak with “other tongues.” Verse 4 does not tell us the nature of these tongues, whether they were ecstatic or not. However, the context would suggest that they were known languages, considering verse 6 reports that the people heard them speaking in their own languages. That the disciples were able to speak in these other languages was no less amazing, however, than if they had been speaking in a prayer language. The implication of the verse is that the disciples did not have knowledge of these languages of themselves but spoke in them by the power of the Holy Spirit. 5 And there were dwelling at Jerusalem Jews, devout men, out of every nation under heaven. These Jews dwelling at Jerusalem were devout men of every nation under heaven. In the Greek, “devout” is eulabes

NEWS@RAISETHEPRAISENEWS.NET (yoo-lab-ACE) and means “reverencing God; pious; religious.” Thus, many of the Jews present during this event were pilgrims from other nations who had come to Jerusalem to celebrate Pentecost. That they were from “every nation under heaven” is a way of saying that they were from many different places. 6 Now when this was noised abroad, the multitude came together, and were confounded, because that every man heard them speak in his own language. Evidently the noise of the arrival of the Holy Spirit was very loud and drew a great crowd from those who had come to Jerusalem for the Jewish celebration of Pentecost. The people were “confounded” (Gk. sugcheo, soong-KHEH-o) which means they were stirred up or thrown into disorder. They did not understand what was happening and they were very vocal about their confusion. Some of them understood Aramaic, the language that the disciples spoke, and others understood Greek, the language spoken by the educated people of that day. But no language speaks to us about spiritual things like the language spoken in our homes as we were growing up. And this is what the multitude heard. They came from many places and spoke many different languages, but they could hear the disciples speaking in the languages that touched their hearts. 7 And they were all amazed and marvelled, saying one to another, Behold, are not all these which speak Galilaeans? 8 And how hear we every man in our own tongue, wherein we were born? All the apostles were from the region of Galilee, just as Jesus was. Not only were they speakers of Aramaic, but they had their own distinctive accent. Just as an American

can tell a Texan from a Bostonian, so those who lived in Jerusalem could tell that the apostles were from Galilee just by listening to how they spoke Aramaic. Those from the region of Galilee were mostly village people without cosmopolitan knowledge of a variety of languages. No wonder the crowd was amazed. The Greek word for “amazed” is existemi (ex-IS-tay-mee), which means they were astounded to the point of feeling as if they were going insane. 9 Parthians, and Medes, a nd Ela mites, a nd the dwellers in Mesopotamia, and in Judaea, and Cappadocia, in Pontus, and Asia, 10 Phrygia, and Pamphylia, in Egypt, and in the parts of Libya about Cyrene, and strangers of Rome, Jews and proselytes, 11 Cretes and Arabians, we do hear them speak in our tongues the wonderful works of God. 12 And they were all amazed, and were in doubt, saying one to another, What meaneth this? Most of the people in this crowd were descendants of Jews who had been taken away when the northern kingdom (Israel) was defeated by the Assyrians and those who were taken away when the southern kingdom (Judea) was defeated by the Babylonians. The Parthians, Medes, and Elamites came from what is modern day Iran. They were also known earlier as Persians or Medo-Persians. This was the farthest east to which the Roman Empire stretched. Then to the North of Jerusalem were Cappadocia and Pontus, which were part of the Roman province of Asia (just a small part of the Asian continent). Moving to the West were Phrygia and Pamphylia. All these, except for Pamphylia, were located in the Roman province

THE DEVIL IN MY HEAD Before sleep one night I spoke with strife Devil you betta get outta my life! But I felt his presence upon the morning He ran and hid but ignored my warning Oh my that devil sure is slick During daylight he hides in the thick But during darkness he roams to and fro And pounces on those with spirits low He preys upon the spiritual wimps Today I thought I caught a glimpse With boldness I then stomped up close That devil vanished like a ghost I was mad and went out to hunt him Brought my big Bible to confront him I was on his trial and tried not to lose it I had a knife, like Peter, and ready to use it James chapter 4 verse 7 proved so true Resist the devil, and he will flee from you Though the devil got away, I know this creep He plans to jump me when I sleep But the presence Jesus makes the devil shriver For all God’s children have been delivered So each night I pray and I pray bold That no creepy devil will steal my soul

of Asia, now in modern day Turkey. However, the people in those days were not Turkish. The Turks moved in at a much later date. And then to the South of Israel is Africa. Philo, himself a Jew from Alexandria, estimated that there were a million Jews living in Alexandria alone. Jewish people from Egypt (Alexandria) and Cyrene (a city located in modern day Libya) came to participate in Pentecost. This is almost like Babel coming undone. Although these people came to Jerusalem for Pentecost, the mother tongues represented here came from east, north, west, and south. It was no accident of history that the Holy Spirit came down upon God’s people in a dramatic fashion when people from everywhere known to the people of that day were gathered in Jerusalem. Also there were proselytes in the groups, Gentiles who had been converted to Judaism. Those who were gathered were amazed to hear these people speaking in their own languages, especially in light of the fact that the speakers were all Galileans and not from any of the lands whose languages they spoke. They heard these believers speaking the mighty acts of God, which no doubt included His former acts of old and His new ones accomplished in the person and work of Jesus Christ. Such an amazing miracle needed an explanation. Thus the amazed and perplexed bystanders ask, “What does this mean?” 13 Others mocking said, These men are full of new wine. In the Greek, the word “mocking” is chleuazo (khlyooAD-zo) and means “deriding, jeering.” No matter how amazing the miracle, there are always skeptics, those who question the veracity of God’s acts, and always those who ridicule God’s work. So it was in this case. There were those who jeered at or derided the event, attributing God’s miracle to the effects of alcohol. They accused those whom God had filled with the Spirit as being filled with new wine.

THE PROCESS....

Where the Seed Falls

“The seed is the word of God. Those along the path are the ones who hear, and then the devil comes and takes away the word from their hearts, so that they may not believe and be saved. Those on the rocky ground are the ones who receive the word with joy when they hear it, but they have no root. They believe for a while, but in the time of testing they fall away. The seed that fell among thorns stands for those who hear, but as they go on their way they are choked by life’s worries, riches and pleasures, and they do not mature. But the seed on good soil stands for those with a noble and good heart, who hear the word, retain it, and by persevering produce a crop.” – Luke 8:11-15

by Andrea Andrews Perhaps one of thee most beautiful occurrences on Resurrection Sunday are the number of souls coming to the altar to give their lives to Christ. While it may be challenging to place exactly what brings

people to the altar (e.g. sermon, scripture, music…), the end result is souls thirsting to know Christ. “The Parable of the Sower” is such a profound teaching by the Rabbi. Categorically, He is able to illustrate the different types of souls who seek Him – imagining that the heart of each person is “soil”… and, not all soil is good/fertile. As we press toward the mark of this journey, we often see examples of each type of soul

– those who are earnest in initially hearing the word, yet because it did not pierce their heart, the devil came along and snatched it from them. Then, there are those who when tested, find themselves back out in the world behaving as other unbelievers, followed by the rest who are seduced by material things; leading them often to be irresponsible with money and thus worry about their finances. And, then there are the

souls who please God – those who allow the Word (sharper than any double-edged sword) to pierce their hearts; cutting so deep that they swallow each helping of scripture as a man who is starving would. These are the souls whom seemingly can not get enough of God’s Word – meditating on it day & night – digesting it line-byline and studying it precept upon precept. If Christ instructs that “The seed is the

word of God”, where exactly has the seed fallen in your life? On the path? Upon rocks? Among thorns? Or has it fallen on fertile soil “yielding 100 times that which was sown”? Salvation is an “investment”. What one vests (like most everything in life), one will reap. Yet, unlike ANYTHING else in this life, God continues to bless even though His children fully ignore Him…but, only for a time. Peace, Love & Blessings www.theprocesschristiancounseling.com

love and desire to bless mankind can’t overrule their free will. Therefore, the mission of those of us who have embraced Jesus is to share the Good News of Jesus Christ, so that hopefully men will turn from the eternal damnation of hell’s fire. Those who will

not choose to love Jesus, but rather hate Him, will come to a tragic reality of realizing their error. At that point, it will be too late to reverse their decision. The Holy Spirit’s plea for each of our lives is to love Jesus and to demonstrate that love in our lifestyles. Don’t

let it be said too late for our lives! Choose to love and embrace Jesus rather than to hate and reject Him, which will be demonstrated in how we live our lives. Join us for our 1st Sat. Fellowship, April 6, 2013, 1:15 p.m. at the U S Bank Community Bldg., Crenshaw

FOOD FOR THOUGHT

World View vs. God View

DR. JOYCE HARRELL

As leaders how we handle life’s issues can deeply affect our witness and walk. The world has a lot to say about hu-

man rights, and when we don’t go along with its philosophy it makes us appear to be bigoted, bias and haters. But, regardless to how we are viewed, we cannot give in to feelings and the emotions of wanting to be people pleasers. Do not allow the worlds view of things affect your decision making and thus how you handle life’s issues. First of all the world’s view is based on opinion and not truth or fact. Have you ever consid-

ered whose standard the world is using in its decision making? The world does not have a standard; only presuppositions and assumptions. As believers we not only know the truth but we also have the truth in the written Word of God. Someone asked me, what my opinion on gay marriage was; I told them I didn’t have an opinion. I don’t have an opinion because I did not create man, nor did I institute marriage. I

told them what they needed to do was consult the one who created man and woman, and instituted marriage. I let them know that I was willing to help them by going to the Bible and seeing what God had to say. After all He is the true authority and it is only His opinion that matters. Don’t give into the worlds view – make sure God’s view is what is most important, and emphasize it in a loving and compassionate

way. Don’t allow the pressures and issues of this life twist you into accepting the world’s way vs. God’s way. Dr. Joyce is a lay-person, under the leadership of Dr. Ticey M. Brown, at Mt. Tabor Missionary Baptist Church, where she serves as the Strategic Leadership Director. Dr. Joyce’s mission is to develop servant-leaders and enhance ministries within the Church. Two Women, A Baby and A King… “Then the other woman said, “No! But the living one is my son, and the dead one is your son.” And the first woman said, “No! But the dead one is your son, and the living one is my son.” Thus they spoke before the king. – 1 Kings 3:16-28

LADY DR. PHELENCIA A. WHITE

Two women, unnamed, identified only by their past or present occupation. In this season of life they are mothers both gave birth, one child is living, and the other’s now dead. The testimony of the FIRST woman seeking justice is that both women live in the

same house. She gave birth in the house which was witnessed by the other woman. “…And we were together; no one was with us in the house…” (1 Kings 3:18) There were NO WITNESSES to substantiate her claim. Three days later the other woman gave birth in a non descript place. The other woman’s son died in the night as she laid on the child while she slept. After her loss, she plotted, schemed and devised a plan to keep her from being without child. She decided

that she would TAKE the living child from its birth mother and return to her in exchange “the dead child” claiming it was the child she had all along. A woman who gives birth KNOWS what her child REALLY looks like. There are distinguishing features, birthmarks, identifiers recognizable by the TRUE mother. You can’t bring a COUNTERFEIT anything to a woman who has given birth to a REAL thing for she will recognize the difference. In this story, I see two women

who each had been given the opportunity to birth purpose and destiny. One woman slept on hers and it died. The other did not and her seed was positioned to live to declare the works of the Lord. (Psalm 118:17) The woman who slept on hers refused to accept her losses setting in motion the plot to kill, steal and destroy (John 10:10) that which did not belong to her another woman’s purpose and destiny. She did not care who or what was destroyed by her antics.

Her intentions were “inward” focused. We will never know all of her heart thoughts, but one thing we do know is that righteousness was not her focus at all. How do we know this? Because from the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks. (Luke 6:45) For when King Solomon asked that a sword be given to him so that the living child could be cut in half giving each woman her Continued On Page 15
