ONE FAITH FELLOWSHIP’S NUGGETS FOR THE SOUL FUEL FOR THE JOURNEY The proper type and quantity of fuel is needed to stimulate movement from one point to another and to generate the power to sustain the operation of objects and even people. Definitely, for a successful journey through life, we must have the proper kinds of fuel to enable us to endure all of the challenges along the way and also to complete our journey from earth to God’s eternal home. The Christian must be sure to fill up with the “Fuel of Faith”; the assurance that we will never be left

alone to face the obstacles of life. Hebrews 13:5- I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee. The “Fuel of Trust” of Romans 15:13- I pray that God, the source of hope, will fill you completely with joy and peace because you trust in Him. Then you will overflow with confident hope through the power of the Holy Spirit. The “Fuel of Remembrance and Restfulness”; for even though we will experience trials and tribulations of various kinds; that we will constantly remind ourselves to do Psalms 116:

DR. TONYA LEWIS

7-Return unto thy rest, O my soul; for the LORD hath dealt bountifully with thee. As we

reflect and remember on what the Lord God Almighty has already done for us, how He has already rescued us from many dangers seen and unseen, how He has already answered so many of our prayers and provided for us, then we will be encouraged to continue in our journey from earth to Heaven. Most definitely fill up with the “Fuel of Praising God”; for praise refreshes our weary soul! It is the tow truck which pulls us up out of the ditch of despair so that we will not be overtaken by hopelessness and

depression. Praise elevates our attention from the momentary hopeless reality of situations to believing in the very possible supernatural change in those same situations! Praise elevates and maintains our attention toward God, realizing that He is our source and comfort. Praise encourages us to yet go forth when everything else is telling us to give up and to accept defeat! Praise provides joy in our sanctified souls in the midst of storms. Praise reminds us of DaddyContinued On Page 14

AIM for Change

By the end of the lesson, we will: KNOW that sometimes believers must fast and pray for God’s protection; DESIRE to fast and pray; and PLAN to fast and pray.

Ezra 8:21 Then I proclaimed a fast there, at the river of Ahava, that we might afflict ourselves before our God, to seek of him a right way for us, and for our little ones, and for all our substance. 22 For I was ashamed to require of the king a band of soldiers and horsemen to help us against the enemy in the way: because we had spoken unto the king, saying,

The hand of our God is upon all them for good that seek him; but his power and his wrath is against all them that forsake him. 23 So we fasted and besought our God for this: and he was intreated of us. NLT Ezra 8:21 And there by the Ahava Canal, I gave orders for all of us to fast and humble ourselves before our God. We prayed that he would give us a safe journey and protect us, our children, and our goods as we traveled. 22 For I was ashamed to ask the king for soldiers and horsemen to accompany us and protect us from enemies along the way. After all, we had told the king, “Our God’s hand of protection is on all who worship him, but his fierce anger rages against those who abandon him.” 23 So we fasted and earnestly prayed that our God would take care of us, and he heard our prayer.

IN FOCUS Celeste recently graduated from college with a degree in social work. She was given a fulltime position as an intern. She had to travel to unsavory neighborhoods. Some of Celeste’s work surroundings made her uneasy, causing her to consider her own safety. She didn’t say anything, not wanting to cause alarm while new on her post. However, her appetite had been affected; she hadn’t been eating. She found herself seeking God for answers. She heard a message concerning the purpose of fasting and decided to turn her recent eating habits into a fasting sacrifice for guidance and protection. In the weeks following Celeste’s fasting, she became calm and confident of God’s protection. Celeste continued to travel to her appointments faithfully. Her superiors acknowledged her dedication, and she was later reassigned to a paying position inside the main office. The clients now came to her; no more travel through unsavory neighborhoods. God made a way and showed favor to Celeste where all outcomes could be seen because of her faith, fasting and prayer. Today’s lesson discusses how fasting and praying move God to action in dire situations. THE PEOPLE, PLACES AND TIMES Ezra. He was a scribe, well-versed in the Mosaic Law. He led a second group of exiles to Jerusalem from Babylon, where “Some of the people of Israel, as well as some of the priests, Levites, singers, gatekeepers, and Temple servants, traveled up to Jerusalem with him in the seventh year of King Artaxerxes’ reign” (Ezra 7:7, NLT). He found that they had rebuilt the Temple; however, the people’s lives were in shambles as they had intermarried with foreigners, something God forbade them to do. BACKGROUND In today’s passage, Ezra moves from a prophetic role to a leadership role. After he bragged about having God’s protection, he led the people in prayer and fasting to ensure it in their return to their homeland. Typically, the Persians would have provided military escort for Ezra as they were carrying with them contributions made by the Persians. Apparently, however, the Persian king had been convinced of God’s protection for the returning exiles. IN DEPTH 1. Why Ezra Proclaimed a Fast (Ezra 8:21-22) The Children of Israel were released from their captors and allowed to return to their homeland with all of their belongings and the articles belonging in the Temple. They would also carry funding from the king to rebuild the Temple in Jerusalem. Ezra boasted to the king about the covering of the Lord to those who feared and obeyed Him (v. 22). Ezra’s statement made such an impact on the king that he did not send the normal emissary of protection with them. Much was at stake in this journey; there would also be women and children, so around 2,000 people were traveling. The trip was approximately 720 miles. Many in the surrounding lands may have been

aware of the journey that the people were about to embark upon; many may have been their enemies. There were those in the Persian kingdom who were against the support that was given to Ezra for the rebuilding of the temple. Understandably, the route had to be considered for the safety and welfare of all who would go with them. Ezra understood that many obstacles could arise and hinder them on their journey. He realized if they were to have safe passage, it would only happen with the help of God. He called upon the Children of Israel to fast with him to seek God. 2. What Happened after the Fast (v. 23) As a result of the fast, the Lord heard their prayer and supplications and showed Ezra the plan for a safe journey. He divided up the precious cargo among 12 men into equal parts. The value of that was estimated at $35 million (which is probably different today because of the changes in currency rates and the market). This is a lot to carry by caravan over 720 miles with 2,000 men, women and children without guards as escorts. The amount itself is insignificant; what is amazing is that after their arrival in Jerusalem, they weighed and counted the precious articles and the gold and silver, and all was accounted for. Their path may not have been in a straight line or the most obvious way, but it was the way the Lord had ordained. SEARCH THE SCRIPTURES 1. Who proclaimed (gave orders for) a fast (Ezra 8:21)? 2. What was the most important influence on the people’s safe arrival after their 720-mile journey (v. 23)? DISCUSS THE MEANING 1. What types of fasts are acceptable by God? 2. Why is it important to pray during a fast? LESSONS IN OUR SOCIETY As we go through life, we learn that we will face things where a solution is not readily apparent. There may not be a perfect example in the Bible for us to follow for our particular situations. Often, these answers are obtained through fasting and prayer. In these instances, God affords us the opportunity to still have access to Him to help lead us through those areas in life. Once God begins to work in our lives, it’s important that we share with others His many miracles and blessings. We should understand that others will gain faith in what God can do by our testimonies. We may have a path imagined for our lives, but only God knows what lies

Keep In Mind:

“So we fasted and besought our God for this: and he was intreated of us” (Ezra 8:23).

ahead and can direct us safely through. He awaits the call and plea of His children, wanting His guidance as yet another demonstration of His mighty effect on their lives. MAKE IT HAPPEN Set aside a few days for fasting and prayer over a situation in your own life that you know only God can deliver or supply the need. If you do not have a need at this time, consider a family member, friend, coworker, etc., for whom your testimony about God’s guidance will provide support during their time of questioning or need. FOLLOW THE SPIRIT What God wants me to do: REMEMBER YOUR THOUGHTS Special insights I have learned: MORE LIGHT ON TEXT Ezra 8:21-23 21 Then I proclaimed a fast there, at the river of Ahava, that we might afflict ourselves before our God, to seek of him a right way for us, and for our little ones, and for all our substance. Ezra, the priest of Yahweh, had assembled the people of Israel before continuing on their long journey. Being extremely familiar with the Word of God and having an intimate relationship with God, Ezra knew the people needed to get their hearts right with Yahweh. Ezra declared a national “fast” (Heb. tsuwm, tsoom) for Israel, one in which every single person was to participate. This spiritual fast was to restrict and deny some of the most basic human needs for the sole purpose of conditioning oneself to depend totally on Yahweh, speaking to Him through prayer and waiting for a response. This full submission and dependency carves a path and hones (refines) a person’s humility. The purpose of the people’s fast was to seek God for protection on their journey. This divine protection would blanket all who traveled. Young, old, male and female, all would be secure within the authority of Yahweh. “The little ones” (Heb. taph, taf) literally means “the weak” or “small children,” but this term has also a wider scope of meaning. Scholars hold that it refers here to all the vulnerable returnees, like women, children, and the elderly. Ezra’s intent on the national prayer and fast wasn’t solely for protection from harm, but for protection from thievery as well. This wasn’t the first time the people of Yahweh were assembled in order to seek His protection as a unified nation. In 2 Chronicles 20:1-4, we read of a powerful army coming together from the people of Moab, Ammon and unidentified others in order to wage war against Judah and overtake the land. King Jehoshaphat, being fearful, gathered the people of Judah from all the cities of the land so that they could fast together as one nation, seeking the protection of Yahweh from their marching enemies. 22 For I was ashamed to require of the king a band of soldiers and horsemen to help us against the enemy in the way: because we had spoken

unto the king, saying, The hand of our God is upon all them for good that seek him; but his power and his wrath is against all them that forsake him. Ezra was forced to put his faith to the test after proclaiming the power of Yahweh before the king. He felt “ashamed” (Heb. buwsh, boosh) to ask for military security for their dangerous journey, and rightfully so. To ask for protection would have brought the appearance of hypocrisy upon Ezra and the people of God, and not provided an avenue where their faith in God and His divine authority could be witnessed. People would have perceived Yahweh as a weak God with cowardly followers. For the most part, what Ezra said was completely correct, and could have very well been led by the Spirit of God in proclaiming those statements. There are many occasions in our lives where the Spirit will lead us into physical situations where our faith will be tested. Whether Ezra was aware or not, he provided a powerful witness for all to follow. Sincere dedication to prayer and fasting will allow those participants to have direct communication with God. When one submits in humility to the Lord, seeking forgiveness and guidance, God tells us, “My eyes will be open and My ears attentive to the prayer offered” (2 Chronicles 7:15, NASB), and He will answer “their prayers because they trusted in Him” (1 Chronicles 5:20, NASB). 23 So we fasted and be-

sought our God for this: and he was intreated of us. The Lord waits for opportunities such as these, not so that He can simply flaunt His power amongst those on the earth. On the contrary, when individuals and people groups seek Him and trust in Him, they gain an invaluable opportunity to benefit from the outcomes of these situations. He desires the hearts and minds of humans submitted in humility and relying totally on His loving protection and

will toward them. We see another example of this centered on Manasseh. After rebuking him and his people, the Lord sent the Assyrian Empire to overtake him. Once he was captured and humiliated after his defeat, Manasseh turned his heart toward the Lord. The Scriptures read, “When he prayed to Him (Yahweh), He was moved by his entreaty and heard his supplication, and brought him again to Jerusalem to his kingdom. Then Manasseh knew that the Lord was God” (2 Chronicles 33:13, NASB). God hears and attends to those that seek Him with a

“Healing a Wounded Leader” Book Release by the Rev. Dr. Wendell J. Davis

Jul. 15, 2013 - INGLEWOOD, Calif. ---------------------Southern California based Pastor and Author Dr. Wendell J. Davis, Sr. has released his latest book entitled “Healing a Wounded Leader”. This book is a “mustread” for anyone dealing with people, he believes the message will help both leaders and their followers. Davis is also the Author of the book “Lost

But Not Hopeless”. Healing a Wounded Leader deals with leaders and others who rose to prominence or success and never took the time to heal from their wounds, whether it was promiscuity, adultery, fornication, molestation, or criminal behavior. Dr. Davis covers a wide range of hurtful actions that leaders may have experienced in life such as divorce, verbal abuse, toxic people, psychological issues, sexual abuse, childhood trauma, addictive behavior, and unhealthy lifestyles. The book also discusses the toxic churches that have people who suffer from mental health issues who rise to positions of leadership and have behaviors that are contaminating, crippling, critical, catastrophic, negative, and dysfunctional. The book will help people already in leadership change their behavior and transform into effective leaders. It will also help people understand what their leader

1-888-290-7277 sincere heart and mind. Ezra was aware of this and knew that fasting and prayer would entice the attention of the Lord, because He desires this. Ezra 8:23 contains two key words related to this idea. “Besought” (Heb. baqash, baw-KASH), means “requested” or “desired,” and “intreated” (Heb. `athar, aw-THAR), means “entreated, prayed, pleaded, made supplication.” How many of us, after prayer and fasting come to the conclusion that God has sincerely listened to us? How many of us have sought His attention and help, with a sincere and humble heart?

HE SEE’S YOUR SACRIFICE PART II

JASON TROY LEWIS

When it comes to those who work in ministry under leadership, know that your work is for The Lord. You should not work simply too been seen, applauded, recognized or for any other selfish motive. As stated in the previous article, Christian service requires sacrifice. The work that we do is our worship to God. In Mark 12:41-44, the writer sets the scene of Jesus as he was sitting in the temple discerning the hearts of those who gave during worship. He saw the rich men giving in

great quantity and out of their abundance, but he also saw the poor widow woman who gave out of her poverty. He concluded that what she gave was greater than the rich because for her it was a greater sacrifice. The woman was a widow, which suggest she had no one to take care of her, no income and was limited to the work she was allowed to do if the opportunity ever arose; and even in-spite of her circumstances she made the sacrifice. For some reason, this is what caught Jesus’ eye. Pastor Curtis Monroe, Senior Pastor of the Redeemer Church of L.A. says of this passage, “Jesus saw her heart, her head and her hand.” She could have held back her sacrifice because of her circumstances but her heart was pure, her motives were genuine and this was made evident in her worship to God. Know that The Lord sees the sacrifices that we make in worship to him. While Mark 12 is in relation to giving, this spiritual truth holds firm in all that we sacrifice unto God. As we serve in ministry, in whatever capacity that may be, The Lord sees! He knows our motives, our hearts desire, our mental challenges, our emotional disposition, he sees them all. Therefore, let us do our very best to serve, give and honor God with our without selfish intent, or begrudgingly, knowing that The Lord will honor our faithfulness whether others do or not. Jeremiah 17:10 says, “I the LORD search the heart and test the mind, to give every man according to his ways, according to the fruit of his deeds.” Article by: Jason Troy Lewis, Executive Pastor, The Redeemer Church of Los Angeles; 1631 W. THE PROCESS....

Tricked & Fooled

“Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world.” – 1 John 4:1

by Andrea Andrews The Bible spends a great deal of time exposing scripture relative to being tricked and fooled by the Prince of the Air and his concubines/subordiContinued From Page 4

FUEL FOR THE ........

God’s faithfulness and His commitment of promises to us! Deuteronomy 10:21- He alone is your God, the only one who is worthy of your praise, the one who has done these mighty miracles that you have seen with your own eyes. Because of our praises;

nates…beginning with Genesis 3:1,4. The serpent twisted God’s words to Adam in such a way that Eve never saw it coming – nor did Adam. The serpent’s speech was smooth and matter of fact. He was not oppressive nor did he “force” either of the two to his will and in all of these many centuries, the enemy has not changed. His speech is still the same BUT he has no power over us UNLESS we invite him to; something that also has not changed since the “fall”. Whether in a

“church” relationship (longing for direction through a pastor/ elder/deacon), a professional partnership or a personal connection (friends/family/ spouse), we must be willing to test the motives of others by FIRST testing the spirit(s) operating through them. We must allow the Holy Spirit to flow through us so that we are never afraid to ask the tough questions which are designed to reveal those spirits not of GOD; questions we are often tricked and fooled into believ-

ing are too harsh or bound to destroy our relationships with others. Yet, we are willing to risk the only relationship of significance to any believer – our relationship with GOD. Quite honestly, being too afraid to ask the tough questions always leads us down a road we find to be full of setbacks and disappointments. However, even in our disobedience, GOD has a way of still protecting us – no matter what. The Bible tells us that, “Even the elite might be fooled” (Matthew 24:24).

Don’t be deceived by the smooth talk of another. Use the Word of God (as the sword it is) like Jesus did in Matthew 4 against the devil. Commune with GOD daily in meditation, prayer and scripture. Allow the Holy Spirit to lead, guide and direct you. You’ll discover that the “tough” questions will become second nature and save you invaluable time. Peace, Love & Blessings, www.theprocesschristiancounseling.com

God will ignite defeat for any enemy who raises up against us-2 Chronicles 20:22- And when they began to sing and to praise, the LORD set ambushments against the children…, which were come against Judah; and they were smitten. God has promised in Psalms 50:23- Whoever offers praise glorifies Me; And to him who

orders his conduct aright I will show the salvation of God”, meaning (The deliverance, rescue, safety, welfare, prosperity and victory of God). Being filled with the “Fuel of Praise” will motivate our declaration of Psalm 57:7- My heart is fixed, O God, my heart is fixed: I will sing and give praise. In other words, my heart is stable,

firmly established, securely determined and is constantly being conditioned to endure the tailored path that YOU have determined for my life. Brothers and sisters, make sure you keep your spiritual tank filled up to keep moving from level to level and from glory to glory. Join us for our 1st Sat. Fellowship, August 3,

FOOD FOR THOUGHT

DR. JOYCE HARRELL

Fact: As a believer, I am a disciple of Christ and a stew-

The Importance of Faith

ard. As a disciple of Christ my stewardship is demonstrative of my level of faith! Discipleship is about responsibility, stewardship is about faithfulness. I cannot be an effective disciple of Jesus Christ without being a faithful steward. I cannot choose which one I want to excel in, either I am a good steward or I’m a bad one. Is my stewardship revealing maturity in Christ or immaturity? We are growing older, but when do we grow

up? Is there evidence in your life that says, I am maturing in Christ? Scripture tells us that one day we will stand before Christ and give an account of our stewardship. As believers we will all get to heaven, but we will not all receive the same degree of rewards. What we do now will determine how we will experience eternity. As we live this life, we will face trials, and how we respond to these trials will reveal our faith or lack of faith in God. Also

remember, God has not taken away our free will, we have a choice. We must deliberately choose to trust God and walk in faith - doing the best we can with what He gave us. Will we struggle through life issues, or will we endure? If we continue to struggle – the problem is not with the Lord’s promise or power, but the problem is our lack of faith. By focusing on the enormity of our problems, we lose sight of our Sovereign God who waits for us to ask for

His intervention. Dr. George Banks, author of, Back to Basics, states, “The one thing that motivates God to move on our behalf is faith.” Bottom line, if you want to experience God moving in your life, you must exercise your faith!! Dr. Joyce is a lay-person, under the leadership of Pastor Ticey Brown, at Mt. Tabor Missionary Baptist Church, where she serves as the Continued On Page 15

THE IMPORTANCE OF .......

SHAKE, SHAKE, SHAKE “And whoever will not receive you nor hear your words, when you depart from that house or city, shake off the dust from your feet.” Matt. 10:14 (NKJV)

LADY DR. PHELENCIA A. WHITE

Both the house and the city…places where the Word of God would not be received. (1 Peter 4:17; Rev. 18) The instruction given, “shake off the dust from your feet”. This was a “SNUB”, a practice of selfrighteous Jews in Jesus’ day to show their disdain to those who opposed their belief systems. It was a way of letting them know that they were

making wrong choices. So in the similitude of his parabolic fashion, Jesus decided to use their own symbolic gesture as a testimony against them in that they were doing the same…MAKING WRONG CHOICES! Jesus was building a Spiritual Army, not a group of TITLE TYRANTS, POSITION PIRATES, PEW SITTERS and BENCH WARMERS. They had to be STRONG SOLDIERS. (2 Tim. 2:1-4) Not everyone wants the GOOD NEWS to be shared because in order to share the GOOD NEWS you’ve got to deliver some BAD NEWS…LIKE YOUR WAY OF LIVING IS NOT ACCEPTABLE TO

GOD. Who wants to preach that to their HOMIES? Especially if they are doing what the HOMIES do when they aren’t around other Christians? So people who don’t want to EVANGELIZE fight those who do. (Matt. 25:24-30) This is usually done because they have agendas that have absolutely nothing to do with adding to God’s kingdom for soul prosperity. Tuck your toes! Because those who don’t want it done ACTUALLY HAVE NO PLAN TO GET IT DONE even if they wanted to but no worries because they DON’T WANT TO DO IT ANYWAY! HERE IS THE REASON WHY… Ahhh! The GREAT

COMMISSION (Matt. 28:1920) GO OUT, teach, baptize and teach them even more. The “GO OUT” part is where the REAL CHALLENGE begins! Matthew 10 provides an exhaustive ADMINISTRATIVE EVANGELISM MODULE. Passages found in Mark 6:10-13 and Luke 9:1-6 describe the OUTCOMES as a result of their OBEDIENCE with implementing the plan IN FAITH! (Heb. 11:1-3; James 2:26) In Mark, Jesus told the disciples to go out two by two, He gave them power over unclean spirits, and COMMANDED that they take nothing with them EXCEPT their STAFF (a support appa-

ratus). NO PROVISION BAG, NO BREAD, NO MONEY, TO WEAR SANDALS and DON’T OVERDRESS (Two coats)! What a cost-effective campaign when GOD IS RUNNING THE EVANGELISM TEAM! So they WENT OUT, preached repentance, cast out many devils, anointed with oil with many that were sick being healed. In Luke’s account it was much of the same. THEY DEPARTED, went through towns, preaching the gospel and healed everywhere. The difference in Matthew’s account is that there Continued On Page 15

is a briefing by JESUS’ directly to HIS DISCIPLES to make them aware of WHAT TO EXPECT during their EXPEDITION. COULD THIS BE THE REASON WHY IT IS NOT DONE TODAY? Jesus told them they were (1) be-

ing sent as sheep in the midst of wolves (Matt. 10:16); (2) to beware of men for they would come against them and deliver them up to COUNCILS [An assembly of church officials and theologians convened for regulating matters of doc-

Living Trust vs Probate And Wills - Ma’Trees Ministries a Christian Service Mission Working with charitable, Educational Religious Organizations, helping people in need, I Rev. Reese, Information Counselor; due to previous experience can share my ministry. It took time, but we made it with hard work and our Lord and savior Jesus Christ. We spoke in churches informing our people about probate, and about the many problems our families are going through in the probate courts. We shared information on how to protect their property, and assets. I would

draw up the Living Trust and all the documents for them as needed. The vision that I saw Twenty years ago, that vision has reappeared. Once again I am assisting families on how to protect themselves from probate by getting a living trust. Probate has been in existence for many, many years. We should know at the junction, by now holographic wills, and last will and testament are being probated. All is needed to protect ones property and assets is a Living Trust. Probate means higher

taxes, court fees, and legal fees that could run into hundreds

of thousands of dollars. In some cases, this causes homelessness and families to fight among themselves; tearing our families apart, losing everything we have worked for. Those that have wills can discard them because they won’t keep families out of probate court. The legal system says there is no excuse for ignorant of the law. I’m always reminded of Hosea Chapter 4 Verse 6, “my peoples are destroyed for lack of knowledge, because thou has rejected knowledge, I will also reject thee. That shalt

be no Priest to me: seeing thou hast; forgotten the law of thy God I will also forget thy children.” What is needed for us is to communicate more about Living Trust than wills. We should communicate through our church community and the entire community. I am a member of the Baptist Minister’s Conference of Los Angeles and Southern California. My membership has been over two decades and I am in good standing with the brotherhood. For more information contact (323) 971-1294 –business, or (310) 749-0948- cell.
