PRAISES OF ZION CELEBRATES MEN AND WOMEN’S DAY-2013 If it be within the will of God, Dr. J. Benjamin Hardwick, Senior Pastor of Praises of Zion, prayerfully announces our intent to celebrate “Men and Women’s Day-2013, August 11, 2013. How wonderful to witness the men and women working together for Christ in a powerful way, to provide a wonderful worship service, followed by a delicious dinner for all who plan to attend. We are located at 8222 S. San Pedro St, in Los Angeles, Ca. You may reach us by telephone at (323) 750-1033 if you need further information. The theme
the body has chosen is: “MEN AND WOMEN WALKING IN THE HOLY SPIRIT”. (Galatians 5:25) Do you not know that you have natural desires that fight against the Spirit? The Spirit and our desires are enemies of each other and they are always fighting against one another keeping us from doing what is right. (Galatians 5:17) Let me assure you that Satan is well aware of this continuing conflict, and uses it to his advantage. He will always find a way to counterfeit what God does, and do the exact opposite. Control begins in your

mind. If he can get into your mind, soon he will control
your heart and your actions. Simply my brothers and sisters. a bird can lay an egg on your head, but only you can let him build a nest in your hair! What is the solution? Pastor Hardwick has instructed us many times saying, “Because we belong to Christ, we have killed our selfish feelings and desires, allowing God’s Spirit to make us loving, happy, peaceful, patient, kind, good, faithful, gentle, and self-controlled. His spirit has given us life, and we should obediently walk with the Spirit.” He has gone on to say, “Submit to the Spirit when
He reminds you to be gentle and not harsh; to be kind, and not rude; to be loving and not unkind; to forgive and not hold a grudge. Both men and women who belong to Christ will be obedient to the Spirit and have a new walk, and allow those positive changes in your life to take place.” To God be the glory! Dr. J. Benjamin Hardwick, Senior Pastor, Sister Faye Williams, Chairperson, Minister Frances Lauderdale and Deacon Tyrone Glover, Co-Chairpersons, and Sister Clarice Holmes, Reporter.
PASTOR CAROLYN A. COOK RETIRES Greetings in the matchless Name of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. “To Every Thing There is a Season and a Time to Every Purpose under the Heaven.”-Eccl 3:1.We, the members of the Sunnyside Baptist Church, are pleased to announce the retirement of our Pastor, Carolyn A. Cooks. Rev. Cooks, a faithful servant of the Lord, has been Pastoring this body of believers for the past 10 years, and she has been a Wonderful Shepherd! She has been our Preacher, our Teacher, our Intercessor, and our
PASTOR CAROLYN COOKS
Leader. She has married our
children, eulogized our loved ones, taught us sound doctrine, and preached the Gospel of Jesus Christ to us, and throughout the Los Angeles and surrounding communities -in season and out of season! We realize nothing last forever, and although we are certainly going to miss her, we marvel at the fact that retirement is a wonderful achievement in life; and we wish her the very best as she and her husband, Deacon Jimmy Cooks move to the next level and new chapter in the Book of Life. As we recog-
nize the service and accomplishments of Pastor Cooks, we want to note that she is the first female pastor of an American Baptist Church of the Pacific Southwest; she is an NAACP Award Recipient, she received a SIM (Sisters In Ministry) Torch Award, Top Ladies of Distinction Award, member of the Gathering of the Reverend Sisters, and has obtained numerous accolades over the years of her pastorate. She certainly is a “Trailblazer” for Jesus Christ! Pastor Cooks will be honored by the congre-
gation, family and friends on Sunday, August 11, 2013. The location is 9317 South Budlong, Los Angeles, CA 90044. Our Service begins at 10:50am as we Worship the Lord in Spirit and in Truth, and celebrate her. The community is invited to join us as we show our love and appreciation to Pastor Cooks. To God Be the Glory for the Great Things He Has Done! Lovingly Submitted, Retirement Committee Sunnyside Baptist Church.

ONE FAITH FELLOWSHIP’S NUGGETS FOR THE SOUL A Transformed Mind: The Platform for My Success! The mind is where we think, feel, will, understand, judge, decide and believe. It is where we determine what we can or cannot do and what we will or will not do. Our success or defeat is first birthed or seeded in our minds, creating the results of what we will experience. This is why it is crucial that our minds are converted from fleshly thinking to godly thinking. Romans 12:2- KJ- And be not
conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God. NLT-Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect. Daniel 5:20-NLT-But when his

heart and mind were puffed up with arrogance, he was brought down from his royal throne and stripped of his
glory. Because Daddy-God is not only the God of Love, but also the God of Judgment, let’s review Daniel the 5th chapter and the need for our minds to be transformed and renewed. 1) V.1-So that we won’t have a false-sense of confidence in what we think we have attained--causing us to place our confidence in something other than God. Also, so that we will be alert and act responsibly for ourselves and for others. V2- So that we won’t dishonor and disrespect God and not maintain the level of
fear and reverence we must have toward God. V5,6-So that we won’t receive a visitation of anger and rebuke from the Lord.V7,8-Because God really does reward and have mindblowing blessings set up for persons who live transformed lives as reflected throughout Daniel’s life. V9-12-So that we will live in a manner worthy of respect, for our reputation and character precedes us. It paves the way and goes before us and sets the tone of how we will be Continued On Page 14

Thompson and the Baptist Ministers’ Conference of Los Angeles and Southern California will host a Benefit Worship Service for Dr. E. Wayne Gaddis, Sr., Pastor of the Greater True Light Baptist Church of Los Angeles and President of the California Missionary Baptist State Convention. The benefit service will take place at the Mount Moriah Baptist Church of Los Angeles, Inc.,
where Dr. Melvin V. Wade, Sr. serves as Senior Pastor. Dr. Gaddis has been facing several serious health challenges, resulting in several surgeries and a long hospital stay. Needless to say, that the medical cost is enormous and continues to increase. If there was ever a time he needs the support of the Body of Christ, IT IS NOW!! We have an opportunity to be a blessing to him, his wife and family in this very serious time of need. The California Missionary
Baptist State Convention, Dr. Gregory Payton and the California Missionary Baptist State Congress, Dr. Rodney Howard and the Pacific District Missionary Baptist Association, pastors and leaders from our City, State and the nation will take part in this worship service. In I Timothy 5, the Apostle Paul discusses how we should treat those who are in need. He goes on further to say, “Let the elders who rule well be counted worthy of double honor, especially those
who labor in the word and doctrine” (vs. 17). As brothers and sisters of faith, we must trust God and look unto Him for healing, provision, and care of our dear brother. God many times blesses others through us. Let us not miss this opportunity to demonstrate the Spirit of Christ. We are asking our faith community to financially support this endeavor. Whatever your gift is, we pray you do your best and give to the Glory of God. If you are unable to attend this
service, you may send a consecrated gift. Please make all checks and money orders payable to Dr. E. Wayne Gaddis. You can mail your gift to: Dr. E. Wayne Gaddis, c/o BMCLA, 4678 West Adams Boulevard, Los Angeles, California 90016. Please join us in continued prayer for Dr. Gaddis, his wife and family, and the Greater True Light Baptist Church. “THE DECLARATION OF PRESERVATION”
PASTOR DESMOND PRINGLE
In Psalm 121:7 indicates the Lord shall deliver thee from all evil: he shall preserve thy soul. On my new project the opening song says, “until it rains I’ll be sustained.” It gets its Bibli-
cal base from 1 Kings 17:7-16. It’s the story of the widow of Zarephath. She found herself in the midst of a drought that lasted three and a half years. She lived in a time where agriculture was the industry. Therefore, no rain meant no water, no vegetation and consequently famine. But the scripture clearly states that the prophetic word that came to her was that her barrel of meal shall not waste nor her cruse of oil fail until the day that the Lord sendeth rain upon the earth. Until it rains I’ll be sustained are powerful words that
we should speak capriciously. With certainty and confidence we should speak these words, “Until it rains I’ll be sustained!” This is our declaration of preservation. In other words, we a declaring God’s sovereign ability to source and supply all of our need. We are declaring his infinite power to be all our sufficiency. We disconnect from the tangible, terrestrial, temporal world system and trust fully in the immutability of God. The one that is constant is change. The one thing that is steadfast is God’s love for his people. In the instance of the
widow of Zarephath and Elijah they underwent environmental change which was the catalyst to economic change. They found themselves navigating new normal because of the lack of rain. However, the lack of rain did not adversely affect God’s ability to sustain Elijah by the brook of Cherub. Then when the brook dried up and God led him to the drought impacted Zarephath the lack of rain did not prevent this widow woman / single mother from having grain for meal and olives for oil whatever means the oil was harvested. If
for three and a half years rain wasn’t falling and the industrial revolution had not transpired, that means crops and the normal means of producing these staples were adversely affected. Nevertheless, the conditions of the world did not and still do not affect power of God’s word. Hebrews 11:3 indicates that the world was framed by the word of God.In the context of this declaration, rain is metaphoric for the normal turn of events. So when one makes this decree what one is saying Continued On Page 15 DECLARATION OF ......

IN FOCUS As a retail store employee, all the training I received was from watching videos— none of it was hands-on, there was no one to show me where the items in the store belonged. Later, the opportunity arrived where I had to train someone who was from another country and did not fully understand English. Then there was the culture issue. The trainee was not used to nor did he appreciate a woman telling him how to do anything. On one particularly busy night, as we were placing the stock on the shelves, he continuously asked me how to do it. His questions confirmed to me that he really did not understand English, or so I thought. The next week, another new person arrived. To my astonishment the person I was training volunteered to train the new arrival. I lost it and yelled at him in front of our colleagues and the store’s customers. The venom that came out of my mouth scared me. I knew I had to apologize, and I had to ask God for forgiveness. After I confessed and sought repentance from God, I was able to go to my coworker and apologize. Before seeking another chance from God, we must confess and seek repentance. As we experience God’s grace and mercy, our acts of confession and repentance become another way for us to worship God. THE PEOPLE, PLACES AND TIMES Post-exilic. The period of time when the southern tribe returned from their exile in Babylon, returned to Jerusalem, and rebuilt the Temple. Prayer. Dialogue or conversation between God and humankind. Prayer consists of petition, complaint, praise, thanksgiving, and confession. BACKGROUND Led by Ezra, the people of the southern tribe returned to Jerusalem (Ezra 8:32). After offering “burnt offerings” to God for their safe travel, Ezra was told, “The people of Israel, and the priests, and the Levites, have not separated themselves from the people of the lands, doing according to their abominations . . . For they have taken of their daughters for themselves, and for their sons: so that the holy seed have mingled themselves with the people of those lands” (9:1-2). As Ezra prayed and confessed to God on behalf of the people their transgression, Shechaniah the son of Jehiel replied to Ezra, “We have trespassed against our God, and have taken strange wives of the people of the land: yet now there is hope in Israel concerning this thing” (10:2). The “thing” Shechaniah spoke of was to divorce the foreign women the men had married.
August 11, 2013 -Bible Study Guide 11 didst thou get thee a name, as it is this day. 9:30 Yet many years didst thou forbear them, and testifiedst against them by thy spirit in thy prophets: yet would they not give ear: therefore gavest thou them into the hand of the people of the lands. 31 Nevertheless for thy great mercies’ sake thou didst not utterly consume them, nor forsake them; for thou art a gracious and merciful God. 32 Now therefore, our God, the great, the mighty, and the terrible God, who keepest covenant and mercy, let not all the trouble seem little before thee, that hath come upon us, on our kings, on our princes, and on our priests, and on our prophets, and on our fathers, and on all thy people, since the time of the kings of Assyria unto this day. 33 Howbeit thou art just in all that is brought upon us; for thou hast done right, but we have done wickedly: 34 Neither have our kings, our princes, our priests, nor our fathers, kept thy law, nor hearkened unto thy commandments and thy testimonies, wherewith thou didst testify against them. 35 For they have not served thee in their kingdom, and in thy great goodness that thou gavest them, and in the large and fat land which thou gavest before them, neither turned they from their wicked works. 36 Behold, we are servants this day, and for the land that thou gavest unto our fathers to eat the fruit thereof and the good thereof, behold, we are servants in it:
After the men divorced their foreign wives, the Bible records the return of Nehemiah, who is immediately seen praying to God (Nehemiah 1). In his prayer to God, Nehemiah requests that God hear his confession of his sins and his confession of the sins of the people. Nehemiah asks God to remember the promise God made to the people of Israel and identifies by name the people of Israel who are to be the recipients of God’s promise. Nehemiah petitions God to answer, and then asks God for the success of the rebuilding of the Temple. After the completion of the temple, the Bible records Ezra reading the Law of Moses to the people. This reading was in response to their sins and the sins of their ancestors. In response to the reading of the Law, Nehemiah prepared the people to repent with a prayer of confession. This prayer included God’s continued care for the people, God’s covenant with Abraham, the people’s exodus from Egypt, and God’s continued grace and mercy. IN DEPTH 1. The People Confess Their Sins (Nehemiah 9:2) The link between confession of one’s sin and the reading and hearing of Scripture is the beginning of one’s journey of faith. With the hearing and reading of Scripture, the act of forgiveness emerges as the vehicle to accept that only God can and does change. Throughout the Old Testament, the Bible records the disobedience of the people of Israel. The hearing of Scripture always preceded the link of their admission of their sin. “And all the people gathered themselves together as one man into the street that was before the water gate; and they spake unto Ezra the scribe to bring the book of the law of Moses . . . before the congregation both of men and women, and all that could hear with understanding” (Nehemiah 8:1-2). Unlike the people of Israel, we are under God’s grace and mercy. With confession of our sins, our confession becomes the vehicle toward our freedom. In Romans 10, Paul explained that the people of Israel were under the Law. Our confession of our sins includes our repentance and our belief in the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus. Paul explained that our confession represents what should be in our hearts and mouths: “If you confess with your
mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead . . . it is by believing in your heart that you are made right with God, and it is by confessing with your mouth that you are saved” (Romans 10:9-10, NLT). The songwriter captured the importance of confession of one’s sin with the hearing and reading of the Word when he wrote, “healed by the power of His Word,” for the Word of God delivers, heals, empowers, and transforms. 2. The People Numerate Their Sins in Their Confession (vv. 6-7, 9-10, 30-36) Both Ezra and the Israelites knew that they had suffered much because of the consequences of their own sin. It was not God’s fault that they went into captivity for 70 years into Babylon. They were a stiffnecked, hardheaded, ungrateful people who would not follow God’s edicts, even though they promised to do so time and time again. Therefore, Ezra acknowledged before the people and God that God had been just in His punishment of them for their transgressions. “For our sins are piled higher than our heads, and our guilt has reached to the heavens” (Ezra 9:6, NLT). In other words, they did not try to excuse their transgressions or blame them on someone else. Therefore, they reviewed their past mistakes. We, too, need to do so, so that we will not repeat our sins—and improve our behavior. The Israelites had been devastated by past rebellion (they had gone into bondage); but a merciful God heard their cries and delivered them. SEARCH THE SCRIPTURES 1. How did the people of Israel praise God (Nehemiah 9:6-7)? 2. What did the people of Israel recount to God (vv. 9-10)? DISCUSS THE MEANING Again, the link between confession of one’s sin and the reading and hearing of Scripture is the beginning of one’s journey of faith. With the hearing and reading of Scripture, the act of forgiveness emerges as the vehicle to accept that only God can and does change or transform us. LESSONS IN OUR SOCIETY Confession of one’s sins is empowering because it is the introduction of faith. With faith, one accepts the plans God has for each of us. With faith, one will engage into an intimate relationship with God. With faith, one desires to please God. With faith, one will allow the Holy Spirit that dwells within each of us to lead us. With faith, nothing is impossible. With faith, one is empowered by the reading and hearing of Scripture. With faith, one will love. With faith, one will forgive. MAKE IT HAPPEN If the acceptance that the confession of one’s sin and the reading and hearing of Scripture is the beginning of one’s journey of faith, then one should begin with forgiving oneself. Many of us have something in our past or even present that needs to be forgiven. Once we learn to live in the generosity of God’s forgiveness and also forgive ourselves, then the work of
forgiving others may begin so the deliverance of past hurts may occur. With forgiveness of others, then learning to love—especially the way God loves—will be achieved. Then, as the songwriter wrote, they will know them by their love—the love of God. FOLLOW THE SPIRIT What God wants me to do: REMEMBER YOUR THOUGHTS Special insights I have learned: MORE LIGHT ON TEXT Nehemiah 9:2, 6-7, 9-10, 30-36 2 And the seed of Israel separated themselves from all strangers, and stood and confessed their sins, and the iniquities of their fathers. The occasion for the prayer of community found in chapter 9—the longest prayer in the Bible—is the rediscovery of the Book of God’s Law through Ezra the scribe. Nehemiah 8 tells us that the people gathered to hear Ezra read the Book of the Law. We can only begin to imagine the power of the scene: This was the Law of Moses, the great forefather, and the community had not gathered to hear it read since before the exile to Babylon (and even then, scarcely was the Law ever read in the later, faithless years of Israel’s kingdom history). We learn that the Law calls for the Feast of Tabernacles to take place, and so immediately the Israelites arise and observe it. After the

feast, for reasons that the text does not make clear (but the leadership of Ezra the scribe and Nehemiah the governor were no doubt largely responsible), the people gathered once more, now garbed not in the happy raiment of feasting but in the penitential rags of sackcloth, and covered with ashes. Why is it significant that “the seed of Israel separated themselves from all strangers” (9:2)? The answer goes all the way back to Leviticus 20:26, at the time when the covenantal community of Israel was formed: “And ye shall be holy unto me: for I the Lord am holy, and have severed you from other people, that ye should be mine.” This idea lay at the heart of Israel’s constitution as a nation: that they were God’s chosen people drawn out from among all others to worship His name (see also Exodus 19:1-20; Deuteronomy 7:6-11). God commanded separateness from other peoples not because Israel was superior to those other peoples—quite the opposite! He knew Israel’s weakness, and how quickly it would fall into idolatry if it developed deep affinities with the nations around it. And this is exactly what happened. The worship of other gods became a nauseatingly recurring narrative in the history of Israel as a nation, and led ultimately to its exile into Assyria and Babylon. And yet, despite this dismal history and the hopeful events surrounding the return to Jerusalem, we learn that many in this newly formed community at Jerusalem had already begun to intermarry and turn away from Israel’s God (Nehemiah 6:17-19; 13:23-27)! The community was learning afresh the necessity of regular repentance, and this chapter is a glorious testimony to their obedience unto repentance. But before they confessed their sins, it was necessary to separate themselves from all that hinted at idolatry, including association with the peoples around them. Finally, we must observe that Israel does something here the modern mind might find surprising, even bizarre. The people confess not only their own sins but also “the iniquities of their fathers” (Nehemiah 9:2). If anyone wonders why the Jews felt they must apologize for their forefathers, the grim history of their people (explained in the above paragraphs) should be enough to explain it. But the answer also lies in the very nature of God’s people. Briefly put, God elected for Himself
S

not a group of worshiping individuals, but an entire covenant community. His promises and requirements (the heart of the covenant made through Abraham and Moses) were made to the people as one, and when some of the people broke the promises they had made in return, the whole community suffered (as shown in the destruction of Jerusalem and exile to Babylon, which faithful Israelites like Jeremiah had to share in with the rest). Nor is this communal understanding of God’s people unique to the Old Testament. It is renewed in the new covenant through Christ (see Acts 2:38-39, for example). C. S. Lewis, in Mere Christianity, paints a helpful picture of this reality for us: “If you could see humanity spread out in time, as God sees it, it would not look like a lot of separate things dotted about. It would look like one single growing thing—rather like a very complicated tree. Every individual would appear connected with every other” (Lewis, 154). 9:6 Thou, even thou, art Lord alone: thou hast made heaven, the heaven of heavens, with all their host, the earth, and all things that are therein, the seas, and all that is therein, and thou preservest them all; and the host of heaven worshippeth thee. True, vital confession springs first not from a knowledge of who we are, but from a knowledge of who God is. As one observer puts it, “The prayer is . . . an example of confession in both senses of the word: i.e., a confessing of God’s glory and grace as well as man’s ingratitude” (Kidner, 111). The first sentence, perhaps confusing in the King James, is probably better translated, “‘You are the Lord, you alone’” (Nehemiah 9:6, ESV). In the midst of many nations and many gods, the speaker of this prayer— probably Ezra, but we don’t know for sure—acknowledges that there is no God but one. One remarkable aspect of this prayer, and a way in which it serves as a model for the prayers of God’s community even today, is the way it tells a story. In this verse the story begins at creation, with God making the skies (“heavens” here probably means skies and not heaven as in God’s abode, and “their host” probably refers to the stars) and the earth, along with all good things that fill both the earth and sky. Then, from the time He creates, He preserves all things that He has made, even (it might be implied) through cataclysms like the flood. The prayer also reminds all who hear that the earthly creation gives God by its very existence: “the host of heaven worshippeth thee.”
1-888-290-7277 7 Thou art the Lord the God, who didst choose Abram, and broughtest him forth out of Ur of the Chaldees, and gavest him the name of Abraham; “Neither shall thy name any more be called Abram, but thy name shall be Abraham; for a father of many nations have I made thee” (Genesis 17:5). Focusing on an event mentioned by no other Old Testament passage after Genesis (Kidner, 111), the prayer in Nehemiah 9 remembers Abraham, the father of the nation of Israel. His former name, Abram, meant “exalted father,” but the name God gives him means “father of many.” The people are therefore reminded of their roots in that ancient place of Ur among the Chaldean people, where God made a covenant with a young man and transformed him into the covenantal father of promise. If the theme of verse 6 was “God creates and preserves,” the theme of verse 7 is “God chooses and promises.” 9:9 And didst see the affliction of our fathers in Egypt, and heardest their cry by the Red sea; 10 And shewedst signs and wonders upon Pharaoh, and on all his servants, and on all the people of his land: for thou knewest that they dealt proudly against them. So didst thou get thee a name, as it is this day. Israel’s exodus from Israel and through the Red Sea gave an enduring shape to its community. The people remembered it every year on Passover, their national holiday, when they commemorated their harrowing escape out of slavery, across the sea that should have swallowed them but instead swallowed the Egyptians, and into freedom and nationhood in the land promised to Abraham long before. And, of course, Jews to this day still celebrate the Passover to remember the Exodus to this day—so powerful is the resonance of an event that took place more than 3,000 years ago. And lest having such a glorious history become a source of pride in Israel, the prayer acknowledges that the Egyptians were swallowed up because “thou knewest that they dealt proudly against” Israel (Nehemiah 9:10). The pattern is clear: The one true God will humble those who seek to raise their fame to a godlike level. God alone is worthy to be remembered for His great deeds: “So didst thou get thee a name, as it to this day.” So Israel’s Lord, Yahweh, is not only Creator and Preserver, the One who calls and promises, but also the God who saves. 9:30 Yet many years didst thou forbear them, and testifiedst against them by thy
NEWS@RAISETHEPRAISENEWS.NET spirit in thy prophets: yet would they not give ear: therefore gavest thou them into the hand of the people of the lands. 31 Nevertheless for thy great mercies’ sake thou didst not utterly consume them, nor forsake them; for thou art a gracious and merciful God. After reciting many of the events in Israel’s history, with a focus on God’s kindness and patience despite however many times the people shook their fists at Him, the prayer now summarizes these events with a reminder of why Israel went into exile. We must remember that the exile would have been a fresh wound on the consciousness of each one present, and a powerfully painful reminder of the discipline of God. The prayer acknowledges that God did right in all things, being not only perfectly just but abundantly merciful, and that the blame for the exile lies solely at the feet of the people themselves. But as has always been true for God’s children, the acknowledgment of sin and rebellion is the beginning of hope for a better future. “For thy great mercies’ sake thou didst not utterly consume them, nor forsake them” (v. 31); the people gathered in Jerusalem this very day were proof of that! Despite the utter despair of the exile, and the apparent loss of everything, hope was returning through God’s mercy and the repentance He was granting Israel once again. The prayer’s moving and significant climax brings two unshakable ideas to the forefront: first, that God is the powerful Head of His people who disciplines them for their sin, and second, that the human powers— those responsible for Israel’s worship and protection—have played a central role in the aggrieving sin that led to this discipline. The people confess that God is utterly powerful, beyond them in every way, and even “terrible” (in the sense of awe-inspiring and holy, not cruel or capricious). But—and here is the beautiful mystery of biblical religion from first to last—the God so mighty beyond comprehension, so other and set apart, is also the God “who keepest covenant and mercy”— that is, who makes glorious promises and keeps them even when the promises
made back to Him are broken. On this basis alone can the people beseech Him that their history of trouble not “seem little before thee,” in the hope that the recognition of their suffering and repentance will prompt Him to mercy once again. For though their own leaders fail them again and again, the people confess their hope that their King of all kings will never fall short of His promise. And lest they appear to be blame shifting, the prayer notes that from the first exile (“the time of the kings of Assyria”) to today, the guilt lies not only on the leaders but also “on our fathers, and on all thy people.” 33 Howbeit thou art just in all that is brought upon us; for thou hast done right, but we have done wickedly: 34 Neither have our kings, our princes, our priests, nor our fathers, kept thy law, nor hearkened unto thy commandments and thy testimonies, wherewith thou didst testify against them. Near the end of the book of Deuteronomy, after the detailed proclamation of God’s law to Israel, the people hold an unforgettable ceremony (Deuteronomy 27:11-14). Half of Israel’s tribes stand on Mount Gerizim, to represent the blessing of God for obedience, and the other half on nearby Mount Ebal, to represent His curse for disobedience. Meanwhile, the Levites, in loud voices, declare God’s curses and blessings before the people. Thus, before the people enter the Promised Land, the Lord has clearly established the basis upon which they will find the life they seek, or in fact lose it. And the people have agreed and bound themselves to the covenant. Given this history, none of these people’s descendants— including those standing before God this day in a rebuilt Jerusalem—can claim to be unfairly punished. And so the prayer of confession acknowledges that the people have chosen Mount Ebal: they have chosen the curse. As a result, God has been perfectly just to carry out what He promised, while amazingly merciful in allowing a return for this faithful remnant of the people. 35 For they have not served thee in their kingdom, and in thy great goodness that thou gavest them, and in the large and fat land which thou gavest before them, neither turned they from their wicked works. The community’s prayer now brings to light another reason why God has been perfectly justified in disciplining the people. Not only did they repeatedly and egregiously break their covenantal promises to Him, but they also spurned and misused the generosity with which He lavished good things upon them. The “fat land” of their home (meaning rich with resources), the kingdom He gave them when they begged for a king to rule them (see 1 Samuel 8), and all His goodness in delivering them from both want and fear—the result of all these things is that “they have not served thee in their kingdom . . . neither turned they from their wicked works” (Nehemiah 9:35). This vivid contrast presents an unmistakable

Expanding Your Literary Horizons
JASON TROY LEWIS
Reading is fundamental! At least that is what I was taught as a child in grade school, and have found to be true the older I get. Reading has a marvelous way of shaping one’s character, expanding intellect and assists in providing understanding of our interpersonal relationships. Reading provides an inside look at the experiences of mankind and gives understanding as to their perception of this world. Reading is simply getting a glimpse of life through the lenses of other people. In my years, I’ve come across many who do not read because they believe it to be boring, uneventful or of no use. Let me respond to that notion in love by saying, Get Over Yourself! While you may have an abundance of ‘street’ knowledge, common since or extensive years of formal education, there is still so much
you do not know! In fact, there’s more that you don’t know than you do know. Proverbs 18:15 says, “An intelligent heart acquires knowledge, and the ear of the wise seeks knowledge.” It is God’s design for our lives to increase in knowledge and reading contributes a great deal towards executing his plan. Forbes Magazine issued an article that claimed, “If You Want to Succeed in Business, Read More Novels.” The article points to “studies that show reading fiction actually increases people’s emotional intelligence: their accurate awareness of themselves and others, and their ability to create positive relationships with others based on managing their own reactions.” What should you read? Answer: Anything and Everything! Read the Word of God, blogs, magazine, news articles, books, pamphlets, etc. If it has words, you may want to consider reading it. I have made it a daily morning routine to read my favorite blog writers and news articles. What are the guidelines to broadening your sphere of reading? Well, it’s ultimately your choice, but here are a few helpful suggestions: Seek credible recommendations from peers and colleagues. This allows you to learn more about your profession, passions and interests. Read national best sellers. Get a glimpse at what readers from around this world find interesting. Read what your favorite authors read. Have you ever read something that seemed superlatively profound? Well it didn’t start with the writer, they read it somewhere before they wrote it. So read what they read. Surround yourself with readers. One dilemma of interacting with non-readers, is that most of what they say is based upon personal opinion and is extremely narrow minded. You deserve better than to be subjected to illiteracy. Play Reading-Roulette. I did this recently in my quest to add fiction to my repertoire. Simply walk into a bookstore and grab anything. It’s a gamble, but you may hit a literary jackpot. Article by: Jason Troy Lewis, Executive Pastor, The Redeemer Church of Los Angeles 1631 W. viewed and treated. Who we are won’t be a private presentation—but a public announcement. Others will know if we have been transformed or not. Being transformed will birth a desire and boldness in us to help others. It will give us the mind and insight of God. V1317- It will prevent us from being motivated by money and promises of what we can gain and of losing sight of al-
pleted high school and range anywhere in age from 17-40 years of age. They are bright, talented and enthusiastic about their own personal shot at achieving a life all their own – thrilled to be emancipated from the direct instructions of the parent(s) who raised them. In particular, there seems to be this overwhelming presence of urgency to storm into this new territory with the mind-
set of “It’s my life and I’ll do it the way I want to”…As food for thought, it was presented to a group of young men & women the fact that even when we become emancipated from our parents, we still must answer to our Heavenly Father Who expects us to obey Him in the same way we obey(ed) our earthly parents and for this reason…one’s life is not his/her own. The fact is, if we strug-
gled to obey our natural parents, we probably will struggle with obeying God. And, yet He is ever so patient with us. God doesn’t care how many bills you acquire, how many leases or mortgage documents you sign, how many tax right-offs you develop or how old you become. We are all still babes in His sight. Furthermore, when we find ourselves in deep water based upon a series
of poor decisions, God comes to our rescue when we call out to Him. Like it or not, we will always have to answer to our Heavenly Father. Fore, our life is not our own. It has been purchased for an immeasurable price. Never to be auctioned off again - from here to eternity. Peace, Love & Blessings www.theprocessc h r i s t i a n c ou n s e l i n g . c om
ways seeking to glorify God. V 18-23- Being transformed ensures that our hearts and minds won’t be puffed up with arrogance as were King Nebuchadnezzar and Belshazzar’s hearts. Also, we will be willing to speak the word no matter if it jeopardizes our lives. Our eyes and spirit will be alert to hear and respond to the Will of God. Being transformed will remind us to use our resources and abilities for the Glory of God which God
gave us to use for His glory; and being mindful that it is inexcusable not to—since we have greater revelation and demonstrations of what God requires from us. God will honor us, but He will not share His glory with us. V25-28-We learn we can’t get it twisted and mess with God. Yes, He is the God of mercy, but He is also the God of judgment. V.29Because a transformed mind will position us in honorable places called “There” where
the Lord has commanded His royal blessings. We learn that we can trust in the Lord; that He will have the last word over our lives and not people or situations. We learn that God’s Word is always reliable and true- no matter how the situation looks. Living a transformed lifestyle qualifies us to be promoted through life by God. Finally, because if our minds are not transformed, we will not be able to fulfill Matthew 22:37---Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord
thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. Let God transform your mind! Join us for our 1st Sat. FOOD FOR THOUGHT
Leadership from the Inside Out (Kevin Harney)
cation breaks down, and tension grows. We are just people, and we face the same relational challenges anyone else does. The difference is we have crystal-clear guidelines on how to respond in these times of hurt and frustration. We are not allowed to gossip (Rom. 1:29; 2 Cor. 12:20). We can’t wander around the church and vent DR. JOYCE HARRELL our frustration to every person we meet. We certainly are not “Christians have conflict to speak poorly of others and with each other. Relation- dress it up as a prayer request. ships get strained, communi- Jesus has given us a simple
process for dealing with relational fractures; Jesus said, “If your brother sins against you, go and show him his fault, just between the two of you. If he listens to you have won your brother over. But if he will not listen, take one or two others along, so that ‘every matter may be established by the testimony of two or three witnesses.’ If he refuses to listen to them, tell it to the church; and if he refuses to listen even to the church, treat him as a pagan or a tax collector” (Matt. 18:15-
17). If you have an issue with someone, you are compelled to go to this person one-onone to work it out. This means you can’t talk about your frustration with anyone else. You can’t drop hints about it with another staff member. You can’t ask for prayer in a way that subtly reveals details of the conflict thereby gossiping. You can’t let anyone else know that you have an issue with another staff member unless you have first gone to that staff member and sought to be reconciled.
You also can’t merely lock your frustration inside and decide to just live with your hurt and anger. Jesus makes it clear you are compelled to work the problem out.”Dr. Joyce is a lay-person, under the leadership of Dr. Ticey M. Brown, at Mt. Tabor Missionary Baptist Church, where she serves as the Strategic Leadership Director. Dr. Joyce’s mission is to develop servant-leaders and enhance ministries within the Church. HOW DARE YOU, GOD? (PART II) “And the LORD said unto Moses, Pharaoh’s heart is hardened, he refuseth to let the people go.” Exodus 7:14 (KJV)
LADY DR. PHELENCIA A. WHITE
WHEN GOD SPEAKS TO MOSES, His voice is like that of a NARRATOR IN CONTROL of a boxing match where the FIGHT IS ALREADY FIXED FOR THE WIN, but the OPPONENT doesn’t even REALIZE it...YET! (Is. 25:8-9; I Cor. 15:57-58; I John 5:4-6) In Part One, Aaron’s rod was TRANSFORMED into a SERPENT
(Matt. 10:16) devouring those CREATED in SIMLITUDE TO IT by Pharaoh’s WISE MEN and SORCERERS. (2 Cor. 11:10-15) This DISPLAY OF GOD’S POWER was only the BEGINNING of all that was to follow. At this point, TURNING BACK WAS NOT a viable option for Moses. (Mark 13:5-11) The GLORY OF GOD hung on the balance of HIS OBEDIENCE to the WILL and WORD OF GOD. (Acts 6:16-42) He knew the ASSIGNMENT was DANGEROUS when he ACCEPTED it. (Rom. 12:1-2; Heb. 4:12-14) However, he did so BELIEVING that the POWER
OF HIS GOD was GREATER THAN ANY ENEMY sent against him! (Is. 54:17; I John 3:18-22; 4:4-6; 5:9-15) As God SETS THE STAGE for his NEXT DISPLAY, He tells Moses to, “Get thee unto Pharaoh in the morning; lo, he goeth out unto the water; and thou shalt stand by the river’s brink AGAINST HE COME; and the rod which was turned to a serpent shalt thou take in thine hand.” (Ex. 7:15) He tells Moses, I’m going to TELL YOU TODAY where Pharaoh’s going to be IN THE MORNING and what I WANT YOU TO DO NEXT! You see, I am God. (Deut. 29:29) I am AL-
PHA and OMEGA. (Rev. 1:8) I already know ALL THINGS, the end of all things from THE BEGINNING. (Rev. 21:3-8; 22:7-15) Now, when Pharaoh goes to the water, I DON’T WANT YOU to stand on the SAME SIDE he’s going to stand on. I want you to STAND ON THE SIDE OPPOSING HIM! So in essence, God is SETTING HIS FACE in DIRECT OPPOSITION to Pharaoh as He asserts His power this time. (Lev. 20:1-8) God wants Pharaoh to know without a SHADOW OF A DOUBT… I AM THE REAL GOD! I’m not ON YOUR SIDE, STANDING WITH YOU nor am I
KINDA SORTA WALKING WITH YOU if we can HOOK SOME STUFF UP to make it LOOK LIKE WE ARE PARTNERS FOR PROFIT! (Luke 16:13-15; 2 Cor. 6:14-18; Rev. 3:14-22) I am AS DIRECTLY OPPOSED to YOUR KINGDOM AS YOU ARE MINE! I AM the God of MY PEOPLE ONLY and VENGEANCE BELONGS TO ME! (Rom. 12:1621) Then in essence God tells Moses, you know that ROD YOU HAD in YOUR HAND when you went before PHARAOH the other day? YES, Continued On Page 15 HOW DARE YOU ...

WE’LL BE USING THAT ONE AGAIN! When you CONFRONT HIM this time TELL HIM… “The Lord God of the Hebrews hath sent me…” (vs. 16) GOD now SETS DEFINITIVE BOUNDARIES between WHAT IS HIS and WHAT IS NOT as Moses declares, “THUS SAITH THE LORD, In this thou shalt know that I am the LORD: behold, I will smite with the rod that is IN MINE HAND upon the waters which are in the river, and they shall be turned to blood.” (vs. 17) You see, PhaContinued From Page 7 SUNDAY SCHOOL ........
picture of God’s righteousness and Israel’s guilt. 36 Behold, we are servants this day, and for the land that thou gavest unto our fathers to eat the fruit thereof and the good thereof, behold, we are servants in it: The prayer draws to a close with acknowledgment of a painful irony: that the Israelites, called by God to rule on His behalf over the land of Palestine, have now returned to that land, only to be servants rather than masters, small and insignificant rather than great and filled with blessings. For though this return to Israel was hopeful and merciful in-
raoh was looking at the face and hand of a man, but that SAME MAN had given HIS HANDS TO GOD! Moses DECREASED so GOD COULD INCREASE. (John 3:3036) PHARAOH COULDN’T HANDLE THIS TRUTH! (Rom. 1:17-25) HOW DARE YOU, GOD??? GOD turned the water to blood right in PHARAOH’S and ALL OF HIS SERVANTS FACES! They couldn’t find or CONJURE UP water ANYWHERE! His wise men and sorcerers had NO POWER to UNDO WHAT GOD HAD DECLARED TO BE DONE! Pharaoh was MAD ABOUT IT, so HE picked up HIS POUT and WENT HOME! (vs. 23) …Until Next Week – Part III…Stay Connected! Stay Blessed! I Remain in Continued Service for the Cause of Christ (Rom. 8:26-28; 33-39), Lady Dr. Phelencia A. deed, the nation never does gain its former glory, known under the reigns of David and Solomon. One empire replaces another in ruling over Israel: from Persia to Greece, and from Greece to Rome. Israel will be left to look for a greater King, to lead them into the true fulfillment of the Abrahamic promise. And because He came to a poor family, as an infant and then a suffering servant rather than a victorious warrior, many missed Him when He came—and still overlook Him to this day. is that until things return back to normal my standard of living will remain intact. This was the case with the children of Israel in Egypt, such was the case with them in the wilderness, and such was the case with Elijah and the widow. As God is no respecter of persons, it’s also the case
with you and me as well. Begin taking the proactive measures of framing your world with declarations and decrees that administer the power of God rather than lack, limitation, and loss the enemy wishes to impose. Preservation and salvation are both of the Lord. God has exit strategies as
well as survival tactics already has in place. Your declaration of preservation will open you up to a whole new world of supernatural sustenance.
