Dawson labored in the vineyard to reach souls for Jesus Christ in this present-age. As a visionary, educator, leader, and international missionary, Rev. Dr. Lonnie Dawson envisioned change, implemented action, and transformed lives. More so, during his tenure, Dr. Dawson developed one of the largest Sunday school departments in Los Angeles and

abroad, authored several books on Sunday school growth, and founded the Church Leadership Training Institute (C.L.T.I) of the LAX Urban Center (formerly known as Crescent Bay West Los Angeles Association). However, Pastor Dawson’s greatest accomplishment was sharing in the work of the ministry with his lovely wife, First Lady Emeritus Mamie P. Dawson, his children, Rev. Dr. Sonja R. Dawson, Sis. PRAISES OF ZION CELEBRATES MEN AND WOMEN’S DAY-2013 If it be within the will of God, Dr. J. Benjamin Hardwick, Senior Pastor of Praises of Zion, prayerfully announces our intent to celebrate “Men and Women’s Day-2013, August 11, 2013. How wonderful to witness the men and women working together for Christ in a powerful way, to provide a wonderful worship service, followed by a delicious dinner for all who plan to attend. We are located at 8222 S. San Pedro St, in Los Angeles, Ca. You may reach us by telephone at (323) 750-1033 if you need further information. The theme

the body has chosen is: “MEN AND WOMEN WALKING IN THE HOLY SPIRIT”. (Galatians 5:25) Do you not know that you have natural desires that fight against the Spirit? The Spirit and our desires are enemies of each other and they are always fighting against one another keeping us from doing what is right. (Galatians 5:17) Let me assure you that Satan is well aware of this continuing conflict, and uses it to his advantage. He will always find a way to counterfeit what God does, and do the exact opposite. Control begins in your

mind. If he can get into your mind, soon he will control

your heart and your actions. Simply my brothers and sisters. a bird can lay an egg on your head, but only you can let him build a nest in your hair! What is the solution? Pastor Hardwick has instructed us many times saying, “Because we belong to Christ, we have killed our selfish feelings and desires, allowing God’s Spirit to make us loving, happy, peaceful, patient, kind, good, faithful, gentle, and self-controlled. His spirit has given us life, and we should obediently walk with the Spirit.” He has gone on to say, “Submit to the Spirit when

He reminds you to be gentle and not harsh; to be kind, and not rude; to be loving and not unkind; to forgive and not hold a grudge. Both men and women who belong to Christ will be obedient to the Spirit and have a new walk, and allow those positive changes in your life to take place.” To God be the glory! Dr. J. ONE FAITH FELLOWSHIP’S NUGGETS FOR THE SOUL SNATCHED!! I needed you most, you have

Daddy-God protects us, His beloved Sons and Daughters, in various ways. Sometimes it is in the midst of the Red Sea which He parts and provides dry land for us to cross. Other times, He will ACTUALLY allow us to be thrown into Fiery Furnaces and Lion’s Dens as we travel this journey of life! But a blessed assurance from Him can be found in Isaiah 43:2- NLT- When you go through deep waters, I will be with you. When you go through rivers of difficulty, you will not drown. When you walk through the fire of oppression, you will not be

burned up; the flames will not consume you. An additional example of what Daddy-God will do for us as Jesus did for the children is written in Mark 10:16; And He took them up in His arms, put [His] hands upon them and blessed them. The poem/prayer by Mary Stevenson of “Footsteps in the Sand” continues to bless and encourage us: “…I noticed that during the low periods of my life, when I was suffering from anguish, sorrow or defeat, I could see only one set of footprints. So I said to the Lord, ‘You promised me Lord, that if I followed you, you would walk

with me always. But I have noticed that during the most trying periods of my life there have only been one set of footprints in the sand. Why, when

not been there for me?’The Lord replied, ‘The times when you have seen only one set of footprints in the sand, is when I carried you.’” Many years ago, while I was at the park with my young children, a violent situation occurred with a group of people. In the midst of all that was going on, I saw a father snatch up his beloved son and begin running in the opposite direction to protect him. The Lord brought this incident back to my memory to remind me of what He had recently done for me! I was confronted with a situation that alarmed me because it tempted and

nearly resurrected my fleshly nature of negative behaviors. But, thanks be to Daddy-God who knows the hearts of those who desire to serve, love, honor Him and to rightfully represent Him before all men. Therefore, because I did not have the strength on my own, He literally picked me up and snatched me out of the situation! Jonah 2:6-NLT- But you, O LORD my God, snatched me from the jaws of death! Thank you Lord, for He knew that I did not want to disgrace His Continued On Page 14 SNATCHED ........

Olive Baptist Church (Women of the Word) cordially invite the entire church community to join us in fellowship on Sunday, August 25, 2013 at 3:00 p.m. as we celebrate ‘100 Women in Red Marching for Christ.” Our theme is “Women of God Practicing His Presence Through Prayer” (Psalm

16:11), Our guest speaker will be Rev. Sonja R. Dawson, Pastor of New Mt. Calvary Missionary Baptist Church of Los Angeles. Pastor is a true servant of God and well known for her anointed teaching and preaching of the Gospel. She is also the founder and CEO of Sisters In Ministry. The Lord gave her a vision to bring together women in ministry to

support and encourage one another and with the help of some of the sisters she grew up with at her local church, Rev. Dawson established Sisters in Ministry, (‘SIM”). SIM began with 5 women and had grown to over 500 supporters in its short tenure. She is truly doing the work of the Lord. The Purpose of the Women of the Word Ministry is to meet the

SPIRITUAL, PHYSICAL, and EMOTIONAL needs of women at Greater Mt. Olive Baptist Church and with our community. The ministry is designed to ENCOURAGE women to GROW in their FAITH IN CHRIST, to develop and strengthen intimate FRIENDSHIPS with other women, and to provide opportunities to SERVE, and REACH our

community for CHRIST. We look forward to spirit-filled fellowship and we welcome all women in the church community to join us in your “RED” attire as we worship and give all praises to God. We are located at 659 W. Colden Avenue in the City of Los Angeles, 90044. Rev. C. Lamar Simmons, Pastor. Sis. Emma Jackson, Ministry Leader; Sis. Rosie Black, Chairperson.

On Sunday, August 11, 2013, at 6:30 PM, President Xavier L. Thompson and the Baptist Ministers’ Conference of Los Angeles and Southern California will host a Benefit Worship Service for Dr. E. Wayne Gaddis, Sr., Pastor of the Greater True Light Baptist Church of Los Angeles and President of the California Missionary Baptist State Convention. The benefit service will take place at the Mount Moriah Baptist Church of Los Angeles, Inc., where Dr. Melvin V. Wade,

Sr. serves as Senior Pastor. Dr. Gaddis has been facing several serious health challenges, resulting in several surgeries and a long hospital stay. Needless to say, that the medical cost is enormous and continues to increase. If there was ever a time he needs the support of the Body of Christ, IT IS NOW!! We have an opportunity to be a blessing to him, his wife and family in this very serious time of need. The California Missionary Baptist State Convention, Dr.

Gregory Payton and the California Missionary Baptist State Congress, Dr. Rodney Howard and the Pacific District Missionary Baptist Association, pastors and leaders from our City, State and the nation will take part in this worship service. In I Timothy 5, the Apostle Paul discusses how we should treat those who are in need. He goes on further to say, “Let the elders who rule well be counted worthy of double honor, especially those who labor in the word and

doctrine” (vs. 17). As brothers and sisters of faith, we must trust God and look unto Him for healing, provision, and care of our dear brother. God many times blesses others through us. Let us not miss this opportunity to demonstrate the Spirit of Christ. We are asking our faith community to financially support this endeavor. Whatever your gift is, we pray you do your best and give to the Glory of God. If you are unable to attend this service, you may send a con-

secrated gift. Please make all checks and money orders payable to Dr. E. Wayne Gaddis. You can mail your gift to: Dr. E. By the end of the lesson we will: KNOW that a part of our worship is thanking God and celebrating our restoration; RECALL times when God restored us; and THANK God for restoring us.

Focal verses: Nehemiah 12:27 And at the dedication of the wall of Jerusalem they sought the Levites out of all their places, to bring them to Jerusalem, to keep the dedication with gladness, both with thanksgivings, and with singing, with cymbals, psalteries, and with harps. KJV

IN FOCUS Joan attended church with her parents as she grew up, sang in the choir throughout her childhood and participated in the church youth group. She loved the Lord and committed her life to Christ at a young age. When Joan went away to college, she found a church to attend but did not attend regularly due to a lack of transportation. In time, Joan began to become involved in activities unbecoming a Christian and soon found herself in a backslidden state. When Joan went home for summer break, although she wanted to recommit herself to God, she felt ashamed and guilty for falling into a lifestyle of sin. Joan’s old youth pastor saw the tug she was experiencing and reminded her from the Word about the love of God and how nothing could separate her from His love. Joan heard and embraced His Word in her heart and rededicated her life to God. Today’s lesson reminds us that no pit exists where the restoration of God’s love can never THE PEOPLE, PLACES AND TIMES The book of Nehemiah occurs during the postexilic history of the Children of Israel after they were in bondage to Babylon for 70 years. During their bondage, they were bound to the rulers of Babylon and Persia and no longer lived in the Promised Land, which God gave them years prior. Because of their wanton disobedience and apostasy toward God, everything they previously had was stripped and taken away. Their plight appeared hopeless and any prospect to rebuild or restore themselves looked impossible. As the Israelites transitioned back to their land, the true plight of their low state came to light. God promised them after exile that they would return to their land and that He would restore them to fruitfulness, blessings and plenty. Any excitement or hope they left was replaced with wonder, doubt and disappointment at the task that lay ahead for them to do. Restoration of their land, nation and status would take time. BACKGROUND Led by Ezra, the people of the southern tribe reNehemiah, an Israelite who lived in post-exilic times served the king of Persia as a cupbearer. While serving, he asked other Jews who passed through his town about Israelites who previously escaped captivity and still lived in Jerusalem. They gave a negative report: “The remnant that are left of the captivity there in the province Jerusalem also is broken down, and the gates When Nehemiah heard this, it caused him much distress, and he fasted and prayed in order to hear what God thought about the situation. Nehemiah asked God for favor so that when

he went to the king to ask for help that the king would grant him his request. And God granted Nehemiah his request. He gave Nehemiah favor and Nehemiah received permission from the king to go and assist the Jews in Jerusalem with rebuilding the wall of their city. When Nehemiah sought God, he reminded Him of His Word and His promise to restore Judah from their reproach: “Remember, I beseech thee, the word that thou commandedst thy servant Moses, saying, If ye transgress, I will scatter you abroad among the nations: But if ye turn unto me, and keep my commandments, and do them; though there were of you cast out unto the uttermost part of the heaven, yet will I gather them from thence, and will bring them unto the place IN DEPTH -

hemiah 12:27-36) Once Nehemiah received God’s sanction and approval evidenced by the king’s permission, he proceeded to rally the Israelites into rebuilding the wall, which they did amid great opposition. Every step of the way, their enemies ridiculed them, which added to the monumental task they faced. Here was a group of slaves, previously scattered all over, and they now began to band together as a nation to rebuild a city ravaged and completely destroyed by apostasy and rebellion, God had removed them from their land and taken everything from them. Now, as they turned their focus back to Him as their God, He made the way for them to return to the Promised Land. Regardless of how far the people scattered, how far they strayed or how damaged they were, Nehemiah’s visit promised hope as he declared even to those who tried to stop their work: “The God of heaven, he will prosper us; therefore we his servants will arise and build: but ye have no pora reproach as God made a way for their restoration and reestablishing them as a nation. With the promise of God’s favor and the king’s permission, the Israelites began to work toward ultimate restoration. They by declaring, “‘Let us arise and build.’ So

Throughout the remainder of Nehemiah we see that the Israelites faced obstacle after obstacle as they tried to rebuild the wall. Ridicule, accusations, harmful plots, and other injuries hurt them and threatened to kill them. Each time, Nehemiah led the small nation to pray and seek the wisdom of God. Each time God gave them instruction of how to respond. Every time they prayed, their faith increased and strengthened even though they feared for their families and their lives. They responded in wisdom, and never entangled themselves with their enemies’ trouble. The Israelites remained focused on the task at hand. As a result, “the wall was completed . . . When all [their] enemies heard of it, and all the nations. . .saw it, they lost nized that this work had been accomplished with the help of our work, they also recognized that success was not based on their own hands or their own efforts but was due to the help of the Lord. Therefore, they dedicated cation refers to “a religious ceremony in which a person or a thing is set aside or consecrated After experiencing God’s punishment for their rebellion, the Israelites expressed their gratitude to back to Him what He enabled them to complete. It showed they learned from their mistakes and were now ready to move forward with the next phase of their new beginning. In addition to dedicating the wall, the priests and Levites referred to “the process by which an unclean person, according to the Levitical law, and thereby cut off from the sanctuary and the festivals, was restored to the away of their previous trespasses and gross misconduct and their renewed clean and righteous relationship with God. This one task symbolized that with God all things were possible and through a restored relationship with Him, He would not only direct the people’s paths, but also allow them continued success. The order and structure of their worship, with two choirs organized and placed in speand the city, demonstrated the seriousness of their experience and intentions. Not only was there much order, but also their worship was “heard from had seen the threatened demise of the Israelites, and now they would see the people’s renewal and restored place of blessing and favor with God. FOLLOW THE SPIRIT What God wants me to do: REMEMBER YOUR THOUGHTS Special insights I have learned: MORE LIGHT ON TEXT

Introduction: This Scripture shows how God calls and uses ordinary people to do His will—to do extraordinary things. If we are willing to obey Him and follow His lead, great works can be done to help build God’s kingdom. Even though Nehemiah was a cupbearer to the king of Persia and was in a foreign land, he did not forget his homeland. With God’s lead and the permission of Artaxerxes, he was able to restore the dignity of his ancestral home, Jerusalem. After being appointed governor of the province surrounding Jerusalem, Nehemiah was given permission to secure the materials he needed to rebuild the fallen wall. In today’s discussion, after much opposition, the work was completed. The wall was

the dedication of the wall to Almighty God who made the work possible—He brought about the success. 27 And at the dedication of the wall of Jerusalem they sought the Levites out of all their places, to bring them to Jerusalem, to keep the dedication with gladness, both with thanksgiv-

Israelites from surrounding villages were to join in the celwhat mighty works God had done in their lives—leading them back to their homeland. Therefore, they recognized how far God had brought them as the wall for many years had been in disarray, and they had been vulnerable to their enemies. Now, God

beautiful wife, for the faithful, dedicated, loving and untiring service as our leaders. We give praise and honor to God for these two wonderful people. The Lord has richly qualified our Pastor for the assignment. Under the leadership of Pastor Lewis our church continues to grow numerically, financially, and most important spiritually. He has taught us the importance of being a church that is sound in bible teaching, committed to the proper administering of the church ordinances, fellowship, and also a church committed to discipline and discipleship. He has also emphasized the importance of family, respect, and unity in the body of Christ. He spends time with the members of our church teaching how to rightly divide the Word of God, how to become selfsufficient, and how to go to the next level. Pastor Lewis is also very busy in the community. He has worked 20 years for the Asian American Drug Abuse Program where he pre-

viously served as coordinator for various employment and training programs and where he currently directs the Inglewood Drug Court Program. Our First Lady, Dr. LaVonna Lewis is a dynamic Woman of God. She leads our NoonDay Bible Study, the Teen-Talk and Women’s Ministries of the church, and is a dedicated worker in many other areas of the church. She does this while keeping her commitment as a Teaching Professor in the Price School of Public Policy at the University of Southern California; Director of the Price Undergraduate Programs; and serving as a Principal Investigator or consultant for many health-related projects in the community. The Associate Ministers of Southern Baptist, the Rev. Kenneth Judson, Rev. Roderick McCray, Rev. Johnathan Powers, and the Rev. Robert Hughes along with special friends of Southern helped to kick off the celebration on Sunday August 4, 2013 at 3:30 P.M. The celebrations will continue on Sunday, August 11, 2013 - 3:30 P.M. with guest

WHERE DO I BELONG?

There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is no male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.

Galatians 3:28

this the moment he saw that Adam was alone and created Eve in order that they belong to one another - belong to the human race and belong to what would become Abraham’s plentiful and flourishing seed. What is often not recognized is the fact that mankind has completely exploited this need to belong by establishing “members only” clubs and organizations; fraternities/sororities, country clubs, social

networks and even denominations…none of which are according to God’s instruction. When Christ went to the Cross for humanity, He gave His life for All of it without discrimination. Each one whom God created in His own likeness has been offered salvation NO MATTER WHAT. The Body of Christ is not a member’s ONLY organization and a vote can not be cast for the welcoming of one’s soul. There are no

monthly or annual dues – no funny hats or uniforms. There is no branding of the body or hazing of the mind. The ransom has already been paid. Christ meets each one of us where we are. The only branding is the piercing of one’s heart with the Word of God and finally…The Holy Spirit is an express Gentleman – One who never interferes with our free will and who never abuses, belittles or mistreats

us to coax us into following Christ. Perhaps the next time we are urged to ask ourselves the question, ‘Where do I belong?, let us remember the day Christ was waiting on us to welcome us into The Body of Christ – a membership which has no expiration date. He prowls around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour. enough money to provide for ourselves and those we love, Feeling important and valuable in our own hearts, Loving and serving the people in our churches or ministries. The things that can replace God as our first love aren’t always bad. They become unhealthy only when they take first place in our hearts. Leaders who plan to serve God faithfully for a lifetime learn to identify when they are tempted to let something else become their first love. We build healthy lives and ministries when we make

sure that God rules supreme and that our hearts are beating passionately for Him. When His glory is our joy, when our hearts beat with His, when He rules with no rivals, we grow healthy as leaders.” Dr. Joyce is a lay-person, under the leadership of Dr. Ticey M. Brown, at Mt. Then, He literally took me away and lovingly and tenderly nursed me back to strength; so that I am now able to stand up in Him. FOOD FOR THOUGHT (Kevin Harney)

DR. JOYCE HARRELL

“A heart passionately in love with God is the starting point of a healthy life and ministry. This is why Jesus warns the

church of Ephesus (and all of God’s people to this day), “Yet I hold this against you: you have forsaken your fist love. Remember the height from which you have fallen! Repent and do the things you did at first. If you do not repent I will come to you and remove your lampstand from its place” Rev. 2:4-5. When God is no longer our first love, our leadership lives are in danger. When other things, even good things, take supremacy in our hearts, we are in dangerous territory. It is so easy for Christian lead-

ers to allow other things to become our first love. Almost imperceptibly, the needle of our hearts can move from true north and before we know it, we have fallen in love with a false idol. Often this surrogate first seems noble, even Christhonoring, but it is a heartkilling illusion. Consider some of the enticements that cry for first place in our hearts: Building a successful and growing ministry, Being loved by the people we serve and keeping them happy, Making a name for ourselves, Making

HOW DARE YOU, GOD? (PART III)

“Then Pharaoh called for Moses and Aaron, and said, Entreat the LORD, that he may take away the frogs from me, and from my people; and I will let the people go, that they may do sacrifice unto the LORD.” – Exodus 8:8 Pharaoh just couldn’t ALLOW God’s people do God’s business for GOD’S GLORY. For instead of IMMEDIATELY doing the WILL OF GOD, he told Moses to INTERCEDE on his behalf, “TOMORROW!” (Ex. 8:10; Heb. 3:12-15) Moses INTERCEDED on PHARAOH’S behalf not DISCERNING HIS INSINCERITY, but TRUSTING HE WOULD DO BETTER THIS TIME!
