EMAIL: News@RaiseThePraiseNews.net
Southern B.C. of Southeast Los Angeles Honors Pastor L.L. & Dr. LaVonna Lewis in Their 12th Pastoral Appreciation Service (1 Corinthians 4:1-2) “To God be the glory for the wonderful things He has done and is doing at the Southern Baptist Church of Southeast Los Angeles.” It is that special time again that we the Southern Baptist Church Family set aside to show our sincere appreciation of our beloved Pastor and his beautiful wife, for the faithful, dedicated, loving and untiring service as our leaders. We give praise and honor to God for these two wonderful people. The Lord has richly qualified our Pastor for the assignment. Under the leadership of Pastor Lewis our church continues to grow numerically, financially, and most important spiritually. He has taught us the importance of being a church that is sound in bible teaching, committed to the proper administering of the church ordinances, fellowship, and also a church committed to discipline and discipleship. He has also emphasized the importance of family, respect, and unity in the body of Christ. He spends time with the members of our church teaching how to rightly divide the Word of God, how to become self-sufficient, and how to go to the next level. Pastor Lewis is also very busy in the community. He has worked 20 years for the Asian American Drug Abuse Program where he previously served as coordinator for various employment and training programs and where he currently directs the Inglewood Drug Court

ONE FAITH FELLOWSHIP’S NUGGETS FOR THE SOUL FIVE REASONS Our Loving Father gives comforting and encouraging words to us, His Beloved Children! Thank you Lord that Your attention is so intently on each one of us that we could easily believe that “I” am the ONLY ONE YOU care about; however we know that is not the case. Isaiah 41:10Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness. Thank you Lord that You address two debilitating emo-
tions in this verse, “Fear and being Dismayed”; which will prevent us from experiencing life as You desire and from fulfilling Your Divine purpose for our lives. You don’t want us to fear, to be afraid and terrified, dreadful and apprehensive because of what we encounter along the way. You don’t want us to freeze in our steps; therefore preventing ourselves from literally being able to go forward. Neither do You want us to be dismayed; discouraged, anxious, intimidated, to lose courage and hope. Current challenges in our relation-

and dismayed. This is in spite of ALL THAT DADDY-GOD HAS DONE BEFORE AND IN SPITE OF HIM BEING FAITHFUL AND ALWAYS DEMONSTRATING HIS LOVE TOWARD US! However, that’s why He reminds us in our key verse of His promises-“Five Reasons” why we are not to park in fear or be dismayed. 1) I am with thee. 2) I am thy God. (Gill)-We can depend on His love, be sure of His power, expect all necessary supplies and to be comfortably carried through every challenge or trial we are called
unto. 3) I will strengthen thee. (Surely I will help you. I keep on strengthening you. I have strengthened thee.) (Gill)- To guard and protect His people, support and supply them, comfort and strengthen their hearts; therefore they need not fear any of their enemies, nor whatsoever they may be called to suffer for His name’s sake, even though they pass through fire and water and the valley of the shadow of death.) 4) I will help thee. AIM for Change
By the end of the lesson we will: KNOW and UNDERSTAND that the Sabbath is to be honored; SHARE with others the importance of honoring the Sabbath; and PLAN to honor the Sabbath.
Nehemiah 13:15 In those days saw I in Judah some treading wine presses on the sabbath, and bringing in sheaves, and lading asses; as also wine, grapes, and figs, and all manner of burdens, which they brought into Jerusalem on the sabbath day: and I testified against them in the day wherein they sold victuals. 16 There dwelt men of Tyre also therein, which brought fish, and all manner of ware, and sold on the sabbath unto the children of Judah, and in Jerusalem. 17 Then I contended with the nobles of Judah, and said
unto them, What evil thing is this that ye do, and profane the sabbath day? 18 Did not your fathers thus, and did not our God bring all this evil upon us, and upon this city? yet ye bring more wrath upon Israel by profaning the sabbath. 19 And it came to pass, that when the gates of Jerusalem began to be dark before the sabbath, I commanded that the gates should be shut, and charged that they should not be opened till after the sabbath: and some of my servants set I at the gates, that there should no burden be brought in on the sabbath day. 20 So the merchants and sellers of all kind of ware lodged without Jerusalem once or twice. 21 Then I testified against them, and said unto them, Why lodge ye about the wall? if ye do so again, I will lay hands on you. From that time forth came they no more on the sabbath. 22 And I commanded the Levites that they should cleanse themselves, and that they should come and keep the gates, to sanctify the sabbath day. Remember me, O my God, concerning this also, and spare me according to the greatness of thy mercy.
IN FOCUS John volunteered as a Sunday School worker at his church. He also worked full-time to support his wife and three kids. God blessed him with a promotion at his job, which required that he work beyond a normal 9-to-5 day. Sometimes he traveled to do site visits out of town, and due to the economy, his company laid off several people. John did not get laid off, but his workload increased in order to make up the shortfall in the reduction of staff. Because of his heavy workload and travel schedule, John began to miss a lot of Sunday school. Most Sundays he was too tired to attend Sunday school, and sometimes he would miss church altogether. His wife became very concerned and discussed her feelings with John, but he refused to listen. She then turned to their pastor. When the pastor first spoke to John, he resisted and insisted that in order to keep his job he needed to keep his current schedule. Through the prayers of his wife and pastor, John’s spiritual eyes opened and he learned how to truly trust God — and that included worshiping God on Sundays. We must always give God the firstfruits of everything He affords us, and He will in turn bless us with more—including our time. Today’s lesson is about honoring the Sabbath. THE PEOPLE, PLACES AND TIMES When God first established the Children of Israel as a nation, He did not just deliver them from the Egyptians and give them a land to dwell in; He provided everything they needed in order to fully function as a proper nation. From Exodus to Deuteronomy, we read how He set out a comprehensive structure, which framed the constitution of their lives. He provided laws for personal injuries, property rights, civil and criminal matters, and various other situations, as well as details regarding the people’s worship. He even outlined the feasts and holidays they should celebrate. In return, God required their utter obedience to Him as their Ruler. They were to show complete submission to Him as their King and total adoration of Him as their God. However, time and time again through history, we see their continued rebellion and disobedience to God, which eventually led to their exile. In Nehemiah, hopes existed that the Israelites would not repeat the past, but through their restoration, live an obedient, committed and dedicated life to the ordinances of God. BACKGROUND After the nation of Judah rebuilt the wall, the Israelites continued to slowly rebuild their nation. Rebuilding their nation required not just the physical effort of constructing houses, roads, and the Temple. Their laws, ordinances and spiritual framework needed reshaping, too. The wall provided safety and security from outsid-
ers and set a boundary around them as a nation. As a result, immediately following the wall’s completion, scribes read the Law aloud to inform and set the groundwork for their constitution. Once the law was read, this motivated the remnant in Judah to confess their sins and recommit to God as a nation based on the original law He ordered. They made a covenant and set out detailed obligations, which they would comply with in order to please God. This document set the legal framework for their establishment as a nation with Nehemiah as governor over the land. He and the people voted for leaders to rule over various provinces set up across Jerusalem. In addition, the Levites were reestablished as priests, and procedures were created for the Temple such as Levitical priest service, tithes, and worship. IN DEPTH 1. Sabbath Observance (Nehemiah 13:15-18) Once the Israelites accepted the law again it meant they also accepted observance of the Sabbath. “The formal institution of the Sabbath is a basic part of the Mosaic Law system. Each division of the law contains specific sections relating to the practice of the Sabbath: the moral law (the Ten Commandments), the civil law (Exodus 31:14), and the ceremonial law (Leviticus 23:3). The keeping of the Sabbath was a sign that God truly ruled Israel. To break His Sabbath law was to rebel against Him—an action meriting death (Exodus 21:14). Society was not to seek advancement outside of submission to God. Therefore, all work except acts of mercy, necessity, and worship were forbidden on the Sabbath” (Nelson’s New Illustrated Bible Dictionary, 1106). To disobey the Sabbath meant to profane the holiness of the day, or to make it unclean or unholy. In the newly established nation, Nehemiah observed that some Israelites did not observe the Sabbath. He found some treading wine presses, bringing in sheaves, saddling donkeys, and selling produce and goods on the Sabbath. The Israelites performed these tasks so much on the Sabbath that merchants from other nations began to come through the gates on the Sabbath to do business with the Israelites. Nehemiah challenged the leaders of Judah regarding their conduct in how they broke the Sabbath. He reminded them that such behavior originally contributed to their demise and exile from the Promised Land. If it continued and they did not cor-
Keep In Mind:

rect it, such behavior would certainly bring wrath and contribute to another downfall. Nehemiah reminded them about this; he also took corrective action by closing the gates to the city so that the Israelites could not leave the city to conduct business and outside merchants could not come into the city to conduct business. “And it came to pass, that when the gates of Jerusalem began to be dark before the sabbath, (he) commanded that the gates should be shut, and charged that they should not be opened till after the sabbath: and some of (his) servants set (he) at the gates, that there should no burden be brought in on the sabbath day” (Nehemiah 13:19). In the Old Testament, to observe the Sabbath was a key law the Israelites needed to follow. If they broke the law and disobeyed God, they needed to cleanse themselves. Nehemiah commanded the Levite priests to cleanse themselves in order to assist with keeping the gates as well as to sanctify the Sabbath. To “sanctify” refers to a “separation from ordinary use to a sacred purpose” (McClintock and Strong, 331). The Sabbath day was set aside for Judah to focus on God— to rest from all their daily labor and a day of obedience to Him as King and Ruler over all their lives and possessions. 2. Keeping the Sabbath (vv. 19-22) When we compare the Old Testament with the New Testament, a number of references indicate that keeping the Sabbath refers more to a principle than strict literal observance. For example Colossians 2:16 says, “Let no man therefore judge you in meat, or in drink, or in respect of an holyday, or of the new moon, or of the sabbath days.” Additionally, in Mark 3, we see Jesus healing on the Sabbath and Mark 2:27-28 (NASB) recounts, “Jesus said to them, ‘The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath. So the Son of Man is Lord even of the Sabbath.’” What God established under the law in the Old Testament was still expected in the New Testament, but in a different way. Some denominations believe that believers are obligated to keep a formal Sabbath day to occur on either Saturday or Sunday. They feel that this is a part of the moral system as set out through the Ten Commandments, which should bind all Christians. Other denominations do not take the Sabbath observance literally, but believe it should be taken figuratively and instead “keep the Sabbath” through a worship day on Sunday, which is observed by attending church. “The Sabbath is a means by which a person’s living pattern imitates God’s (Exodus 20:3-11). Work is followed by rest. This idea is expressed by the Hebrew word for Sabbath, which means ‘cessation.’ . . . a time for God’s people to think about and enjoy what God has accomplished . . . (It) holds promise of the ultimate salvation that God will accomplish for His people. As certainly as He delivered them from Egypt through Moses, so will He deliver His people from sin at the end
of the age through the Great Redeemer (Genesis 3:15; Hebrews 4:1) . . . (Also,) the Sabbath includes the idea and practice of . . . a day for public convocation (Leviticus 23:3)” (Nelson’s, 1107). On this special day, His people could gather together in public worship to signify their submission to His lordship over them and their way of living (Exodus 31:13; Ezekiel 20:12). Regardless of one’s understanding of whether the Sabbath should be formally or symbolically kept, the key purpose of why God instituted it should always be maintained. We keep a Sabbath day in order to rest from our daily jobs, conducting of business, anxiety or worry. We keep a Sabbath day in order to reflect on the goodness of God and His blessings toward us. We keep a Sabbath day in order to set aside and take time out of our week to publicly worship Him as a way to demonstrate our submission to His Lordship over our lives. SEARCH THE SCRIPTURES 1. What were the Israelites doing which contributed to their breaking the Sabbath (Nehemiah 13:15-20)? 2. What negative things could occur when the Israelites profaned the Sabbath (vv. 18, 21)? DISCUSS THE MEANING Describe the various meanings of the Sabbath and the reasons why Christians should “keep” it, regardless of denomination.

LESSONS IN OUR SOCIETY One of the biggest problems facing America is its diminishing reliance on God, decline in church attendance and reduced regard for Christian-based principles. How can believers in the United States help reverse this trend and work toward building up America, which was originally founded as a nation under God? MAKE IT HAPPEN The busyness of life can distract Christians from performing basic duties, such as reading one’s Bible, praying, meditating on God’s Word and even attending church. Due to family commitments, job responsibilities, and many other tasks we must do each day, sometimes we forget or neglect to take time out for God. As you go through this week, make a point each day to spend time talking to God. If you feel as though time will not permit, try God. You will see that once you take time for Him, He will in turn give you the time required to take care of everything you need. FOLLOW THE SPIRIT What God wants me to do: REMEMBER YOUR THOUGHTS Special insights I have learned: MORE LIGHT ON TEXT Nehemiah 13:15-22 15 In those days saw I in Judah some treading wine presses on the sabbath, and bringing in sheaves, and lading asses; as also wine, grapes, and figs, and all manner of burdens, which they brought into

Jerusalem on the sabbath day: and I testified against them in the day wherein they sold victuals. In today’s text, we see an assertive Nehemiah who refused to allow the Sabbath— the Lord’s Day—to be profaned by trading, buying, and selling which was clearly disobedience to God’s command. He was concerned with honoring the Sabbath. In Hebrew, “sabbath” is shabbath (shabBAWTH); it refers to the seventh day of the week and can also mean “day of atonement.” God had done so much already for the Israelites in delivering them from bondage, helping them to build the wall of Jerusalem, and also returning their dignity as a nation that Nehemiah was not going to tolerate sin in the camp. He would not tolerate them working at their vineyards, preparing loads to take to a marketplace, and otherwise carrying on with their chores as though this was just any other day. This day was set aside to worship the Lord—to bring praises and thanksgiving to Him—and nothing less would be tolerated. 16 There dwelt men of Tyre also therein, which brought fish, and all manner of ware, and sold on the sabbath unto the children of Judah, and in Jerusalem. To add insult to injury, men from Tyre brought fish and various wares and sold to the Israelites on the Sabbath. They had the nerve to do it in Jerusalem on the Lord’s Day— the day set aside for worship—where the new wall had been built. Nehemiah found this offensive and knew that it would be offensive unto the Lord. He knew that His people had gotten in trouble with the
1-888-290-7277 Lord in the first place because of their disobedience. This was the major reason why they were sent into captivity for 70 years and needed deliverance. Under his watch, Nehemiah made sure that God’s rules were obeyed. 17 Then I contended with the nobles of Judah, and said unto them, What evil thing is this that ye do, and profane the sabbath day? So Nehemiah contended with the nobles of Judah. In Hebrew, the word “contended” is riyb (reeb) and it means, “strove physically, confronted, made a complaint.” In other words, he went to the ones in charge and voiced his complaint—he let them know that the activities were very much out of order on the Sabbath, and something had to be done right away to alleviate the problem. In fact, he called these activities “an evil thing.” The word “evil” in Hebrew is ra` (rah). It means, “bad, disagreeable, malignant, displeasing.” In Nehemiah’s sight, this selling and buying profaned the Sabbath. In Hebrew, “profane” is chalal (khaw-LAL), meaning, “to defile, pollute, or desecrate.” 18 Did not your fathers thus, and did not our God bring all this evil upon us, and upon this city? yet ye bring more wrath upon Israel by profaning the sabbath. Nehemiah saw the blatant disobedience as bringing more wrath upon Israel, as their fathers’ disobedience had done. In Hebrew, the word “wrath,” (charown khaw-RONE), means “anger, heat, burning of anger (by God).” In other words, he reminds them that it was their disobedience that brought about God’s wrath before, and
NEWS@RAISETHEPRAISENEWS.NET they would not risk this disobedience bringing His wrath again. For Nehemiah, profaning of the Sabbath was so serious that he took charge and commanded that the gates be shut and that they not be opened again until after the Sabbath. He ensured that God’s Day would not be violated in any way. This sent the merchants and sellers the message that it would not be business as usual on the Sabbath. This was a holy, consecrated day set aside to worship a holy God. 21 Then I testified against them, and said unto them, Why lodge ye about the wall? if ye do so again, I will lay hands on you. From that time forth came they no more on the sabbath. Nehemiah was willing to lay hands on anyone who did not heed his words. It was so important that they not disobey God’s commands that he was willing to take anyone to task who did not clear their wares from around the wall. 22 And I commanded the Levites that they should cleanse themselves, and that they should come and keep the gates, to sanctify the sabbath day. Remem-
ber me, O my God, concerning this also, and spare me according to the greatness of thy mercy. The next step was a time of purification. Again, Nehemiah showed his great leadership by commanding the Levites (those set aside by God to do special work for Him) to cleanse themselves—to sanctify the Sabbath day. In Hebrew, “sanctify” is qadash (kawDASH), and it means “to be set apart, to be consecrated, to be hallowed.” The Sabbath is to be a holy day because our God is holy. Nehemiah recognized this and in no way was he willing to violate God’s commands. After restoring the sanctity of the Sabbath, Nehemiah then asked God to remember him and show mercy toward him. In other words, Nehemiah did not want God to bring punishment like Israel experienced in the past, and he wanted to be remembered when God was passing out His blessings. Inspired by Deuteronomy 22:10 Unequally yoked relationships are not rare They’re found in romances everywhere And according to U.S. Census reports Many examples are seen in divorce court In millenniums past a holy man wrote The donkey and the ox are unequally yoked Farmers would seldom know the joy of good crops If they yoked a donkey to an ox That curse extends to the woman and man Who lacks the wisdom to understand No one is always wrong nor always right Some birds fly by day and some by night Unequally yoked couples must learn to yield And consider how their lover feels Are going separate ways is the inevitable choice Without heeding to the words of a higher voice Unequally yoked marriage is a paradox Unlike the donkey and the ox Because wise couples overrule the myth When they seek wisdom and do not quit All humans have a trait of the donkey and ox Scripture awareness overcomes the communication block Don’t allow human differences to ruin your love Become as wise as a serpent but as gentle as a dove

For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened…” However, there is seemingly one condition by which prayers DO remain unanswered…when the “flesh” is to be satisfied. James 4:3 illustrates this beautifully. God is faithful. When we call
upon Him with a pure heart, crucifying our flesh and nullifying EVERY fleshly desire, He ALWAYS answers. Troubling God to send a different answer is the kind of response that is essentially disrespectful. Imagine a child telling their parent(s), “I don’t like the answer you gave me, so I’ll ask you again and again and again until I get the answer I want.” While this may be the parental
“norm” for the current generation, it is purely unacceptable to question God about His decisions. We may not always like His answers, but Papa knows best. So, get up off your knees, go and get that sandwich and stop holding your breath. God has already answered you. The question is…will you obey Him? FOOD FOR THOUGHT
DR. JOYCE HARRELL
Why are you in ministry? Is it for the glory of God, or because it makes you feel important? Are you in ministry because it gives you the op-
WHY WORK?
portunity to show people how brilliant you are? Hopefully these are not your reasons. Every leader should look for opportunities to use the gift or gifts given by the Holy Spirit. But, when using your gift is for your benefit and glory, not only are you headed for a great fall, but you can also create mess in the ministry. Maintaining the proper spirituality is a decision that every believer must make in order to be effective for Christ. We maintain spirituality by praying, staying in constant communication with God for guidance, and seeking His direction in min-
istry. James 4:6 states, “God resists the proud, but He gives grace to the humble.” Nelson’s NKJV commentary states, “Those who submit to divine wisdom will receive necessary grace from God to put into practice the kind of life James describes. On the other hand those who elevate themselves will face a formidable foe. God Himself will fight against their plans, because they are not on His side.” Divine wisdom is obtained by asking for it (James 1:5). Proverbs 4:5 says if you get wisdom you will understand and understanding is needed to appropriately main-
tain spirituality and motivation. Our motivation should be love, love for our Christ and love for the Body of Christ. We should be excited about doing what is best for the Body of Christ as we lead them onto God’s agenda. Satan does not want us to be successful in carrying out God’s business, which is winning lost souls, edifying and encouraging the Body. Be determined to maintain your spirituality don’t allow the instruments of Satan to get you off track, stay in the Word and develop an active prayer life. Maintain your motivation, remember Who
Christ is, and remember His love for you and your love for Him. Be reminded that time is too short and lives are too precious, for us to do anything else but work for the glory of God. Dr. Joyce is a lay-person, under the leadership of Pastor Ticey Brown, at Mt. Tabor Missionary Baptist Church, where she serves as the Strategic Leadership Director. Dr. Joyce’s mission is to develop servant-leaders and enhance ministries within the Church; she is available for classes and workshops. HOW DARE YOU, GOD? (PART IV) “Then the magicians said unto Pharaoh, This is the finger of God: and Pharaoh’s heart was hardened, and he hearkened not unto them; as the LORD had said.” – Exodus 8:19
LADY DR. PHELENCIA A. WHITE
What a FOOL believes HE SEES… (Ps. 14:1-3; 53:1-3; Rom. 3:10-18) Pharaoh had spent ALL OF HIS LIFE being impressed with HIMSELF in a HORRIBLE state of mind. (Rom. 12:1-3) It becomes EVEN WORSE when CELEBRITY (Matt. 6:1-8; 23:1-12) commands TRUST & LOYALTY undeserved. (Is. 42:1-6; Is. 61; John 15) He FORBIDS anyone to tell him he is REALLY NAKED (Rev. 3:16-18) DEMANDING that
everyone TELLS him that he is MAGNIFICIENT. (Matt. 23:13-39) Yes, Pharaoh was a LEADER IN THE STREETS, but this was all about WHO WAS GOD and HE WAS NOT! This was a NEW DAY! (Is. 42:8-10; 43:18-20) A SEASON of RUDE AWAKENING for this BLINDSIDED KING! (Matt. 15:13-15) Moses didn’t know the SET TIME THAT GOD HAD SCHEDULED to be GLORIFIED (Eccl. 3:1-17) nor the SPECIFIC DETAILS in the SITUATION, but it MOST CERTAINLY was going to be ON SCHEDULE! (Is. 45) Moses simply had to hold on to HIS MOST HOLY FAITH while RESTING in the SOVERIEGNTY OF HIS GOD. (Jude 17-25) No plots. No plans. No schemes or WITCH-
CRAFT required. (Ps. 37) While Pharaoh had many an OPPONENT in his life, God wanted to MAKE SURE he knew EXACTLY who he was fighting THIS TIME! I KNOW it had to be difficult for MOSES to be the MESSENGER as he WATCHED Pharaoh repeatedly dig a DEEPER HOLE for HIMSELF. But this was ALL in the WILL OF GOD! Water to blood. Frogs in his house, his bedroom, his bed and even more. SMILING on the OUTSIDE, a HUMILIATED KING on the INSIDE who had EVERYTHING! NO PEOPLE PROPS or MATERIALISM can fix that simply because GOD WILL NOT ALLOW IT! (Pr. 8:1-21; Rom. 2) Unlike before, this time, God was NOT GIVING him any warn-
ing of His impending action. God told Moses to “Stretch out thy rod, and smite the dust of the land, that it may become lice throughout all the land of Egypt.” (Ex. 8:16) What are we created from? DUST! (Gen. 2:7) God told Moses to SMITE [to hit with a hard blow] THE DUST so that it becomes LICE! What do LICE do? They find a NESTING place on the HEAD! They are HARD TO SEE and often CONFUSED for dandruff (something less DANGEROUS). To live, they need to FEED ON BLOOD and WITHOUT BLOOD they die within 1 to 2 days. They are TRANSMITTED by direct PERSON TO PERSON contact. Infestation is more COMMONLY SPREAD WITHIN FAMILIES
(loved ones) and indirectly through PERSONAL BELONGINGS (tangibles, materialism). Lice CRAWL (slow moving), but do not FLY OR JUMP. For this level of CONTAMINATION you MUST BE UP CLOSE and PERSONAL with the WRONG PEOPLE in the WRONG PLACES and DEFINITELY at the WRONG TIME! And ONCE AGAIN HIS FOOLISH MAGICIANS tried to MAKE IT LOOK LIKE THEY HAD THE ANOINTING with their ENCHANTMENTS by bringing forth lice SIMPLY BECAUSE THEY needed to PROVE they had SOME GIFTS, but THEY COULD NOT! THE MIRACLE OF $1.11
JASON TROY LEWIS
Tess was a precocious eight year old when she heard her Mom and Dad talking about her little brother, Andrew. All she knew was that he was very sick and they were completely out of money. They were moving to an apartment complex next month because Daddy didn’t have the money for the doctor bills and our house. Only a very costly surgery could save him now and it was looking like there was
no-one to loan them the money. She heard Daddy say to her tearful Mother with whispered desperation, “Only a miracle can save him now.” Tess went to her bedroom and pulled a glass jelly jar from its hiding place in the closet. She poured all the change out on the floor and counted it carefully. Three times, even. The total had to be exactly perfect. No chance here for mistakes. Carefully placing the coins back in the jar and twisting on the cap, she slipped out the back door and made her way 6 blocks to Rexall’s Drug Store with the big red Indian Chief sign above the door. She waited patiently for the pharmacist to give her some attention but he was too busy at this moment. Tess twisted her feet to make a scuffing noise. Nothing, she cleared

her throat with the most disgusting sound she could muster. No good. Finally she took a quarter from her jar and banged it on the glass counter. That did it! “And what do you want?” the pharmacist asked in an annoyed tone of voice. “I’m talking to my brother from Chicago whom I haven’t seen in ages,” he said without waiting for a reply to his question. “Well, I want to talk to you about my brother,” Tess answered back in the same annoyed tone. “He’s really; really sick… and I want to buy a miracle.” “I beg your pardon?” said the pharmacist. “His name is Andrew and he has something bad growing inside his head and my Daddy says only a miracle can save him now. So how much does a miracle cost?” “We don’t sell miracles here, little girl. I’m sorry but I can’t help you,” the pharmacist said, softening a little. “Listen, I have the money to pay for it. If it isn’t enough, I will get the rest. Just tell me how much it costs.” The pharmacist’s brother was a well dressed man. He stooped down and asked the little girl, “What kind of a miracle does your brother need?” “I don’t know,” Tess replied with her eyes welling up. “I just know he’s really sick and Mommy says he needs an operation. But my Daddy can’t pay for it, so I want to use my money.” “How much do you have?” asked the man from Chicago. “One dollar and eleven cents,” Tess answered barely audibly. “And it’s all the money I have, but I can get some more if I need to. “Well, what a coincidence,” smiled the man. “A dollar and eleven cents – the exact price of a miracle for little brothers.” He took her money in one hand and with the other hand he grasped her mitten and said, “Take me to where you live. I want to see your brother and meet your parents. Let’s see if I have the kind of miracle you need.” That well dressed man was Dr. Carlton Armstrong, a surgeon, specializing in neurosurgery. The operation was completed without charge and it wasn’t long until Andrew was home again and doing well. Mom and Dad were happily talking about the chain of events that had led them to this place. “That surgery,” her Mom whispered. “was a real miracle. I wonder how much it would have cost?”
Tess smiled. She knew exactly how much a miracle cost… one dollar and eleven cents … plus the faith of a little child.
