ONE FAITH FELLOWSHIP’S NUGGETS FOR THE SOUL “DADDY, THANK YOU!” The lyrics that we allow ourselves to listen to, and replay over and over in our minds have much to do with our emotional state, outlook, degree of faith, joy and peace. If we constantly sing the blues and remind ourselves of the difficult challenges in life, it will breed hopelessness and helplessness. It is only when we choose to command our minds to reflect on the multiple blessings experienced in our lives that we will learn to trust and rest in the Lord, along life’s journey. AIM for Change

By the end of the lesson we will: KNOW and understand the new covenant between God and God’s people; FEEL the tranquility of a lasting relationship with Christ; and PERFORM acts of justice so that others can find peace and wholeness.

Ezekiel 34:23 And I will set up one shepherd over them, and he shall feed them, even my servant David; he shall feed them, and he shall be their shepherd. 24 And I the LORD will be their God, and my servant David a prince among them; I the LORD have spoken it. 25 And I will make with them a covenant of peace, and will cause the evil beasts to cease out of the land: and they shall dwell safely in the wilderness, and sleep in

the woods. 26 And I will make them and the places round about my hill a blessing; and I will cause the shower to come down in his season; there shall be showers of blessing. 27 And the tree of the field shall yield her fruit, and the earth shall yield her increase, and they shall be safe in their land, and shall know that I am the LORD, when I have broken the bands of their yoke, and delivered them out of the hand of those that served themselves of them. 28 And they shall no more be a prey to the heathen, neither shall the beast of the land devour them; but they shall dwell safely, and none shall make them afraid. 29 And I will raise up for them a plant of renown, and they shall be no more consumed with hunger in the land, neither bear the shame of the heathen any more. 30 Thus shall they know that I the LORD their God am with them, and that they, even the house of Israel, are my people, saith the Lord GOD. 31 And ye my flock, the flock of my pasture, are men, and I am your God, saith the Lord GOD.

Rhonda did not live on a budget, and within a couple months she began to suffer financially in meeting her monthly bills. In her attempt to meet all of her expenses, she stopped paying her tithes. Soon, her financial situation became even more chaotic as random expenses or a crisis would always arise. Rhonda could not figure out why she could not get ahead. While visiting her parents for Easter dinner, Rhonda opened up and shared her financial problems. Her parents reiterated with her the importance of ordering her financial priorities, including tithing, which demonstrates our trust and gratitude to God. Rhonda realized she had been unwise, leaving God out of her situation while trying to fix it on her own. She discovered that her life would be more peaceful if she kept God at the center. In today’s lesson, we will learn that God is with us and will supply all of our needs as long as we depend and trust in Him. We do not need to fear or feel alone in any situation as long as we allow Him to be Lord and God in our lives. THE PEOPLE, PLACES AND TIMES Shepherding. A key occupation of the Children of Israel, shepherding was also used as a term to compare the reign of the Old Testament kings to their reign over God’s people—the Israelites. God’s Law charged the kings to care for the people. However, throughout the Old Testament we see many examples of kings disobeying God and adopting the practices of non-believing nations. They did not keep their charge and often abused their authority. Because of their “bad shepherding,” the Israelites did whatever they wanted with little guidance or direction. They behaved like sheep without a shepherd to guide them. As a result, other nations conquered Israel and forced them into exile away from the land God gave to them as an inheritance. These heathen nations took over and ripped their land away from them, while forcing the Israelites into slavery and bondage. The Israelites lived in constant fear as they faced war, conflict, and defeat. The Israelites’ defeat and ruin annulled any opportunity to recover on their own. BACKGROUND A lack of good leadership points to the primary reason for Israel’s downfall. Many of the Old Testament kings did not lead well, because they did not obey God’s edicts or commands. They did not shepherd properly. Scriptures use the

shepherding allegory throughout based on its familiarity among the people of its times to clarify or describe a truth. The Hebrew root for “shepherding” means “to pasture” and denotes the key term for feeding domestic animals. Figuratively, the shepherd signifies a leader, and sheep symbolized the people under his rule. Historically, not only were shepherds responsible for the physical survival and welfare of their own or their master’s flocks, but they also had to provide shelter, medication, and provision for lameness and weariness. Because the shepherd watched over, cared for, and met the sheep’s needs to keep them safe, the sheep were helpless without the shepherd’s guidance and protection. Thus, if the shepherds could not perform these basic tasks, the sheep could not survive. Thus, the shepherd must maintain a clear understanding of his role to watch and tend the sheep. The kings of Israel and Judah failed to live up to this standard. IN DEPTH 1. The Good Shepherd (Ezekiel 34:23-24 ) “And I will set up one shepherd over them, and he shall feed them, even my servant David; he shall feed them, and he shall be their shepherd. And I the LORD will be their God, and my servant David a prince among them; I the Lord have spoken it” (Ezekiel 34:23-24). In contrast to the kings of Judah and Israel, who did not shepherd or pasture the people properly, God declares that He will restore order and everything taken from these nations. Order would come through God as He reestablished His rule over His people. Ezekiel uses the shepherd imagery to describe His leadership and the restoration of His kingdom. Of course, God is the supreme Good Shepherd (Psalm 23). Whereas many Old Testament kings failed and sinned greatly due to their self-serving interests and inevitably scattered the people, God as their Shepherd is infallible. He rules perfectly without constraints of human frailty or human error. The New Testament also uses shepherd imagery as described in John 10:11-15, “I am the good shepherd: the good shepherd giveth his life for the sheep. But he that is an hireling, and not the shepherd, whose own the sheep are not, seeth the wolf coming, and leaveth the sheep, and fleeth: and the wolf catcheth them, and scattereth the sheep. The hireling fleeth, because he is an hireling, and careth not for the sheep. I am the good shepherd, and

know my sheep, and am known of mine. As the Father knoweth me, even so know I the Father: and I lay down my life for the sheep.” The attributes described in the Old Testament interconnect with the New Testament description of Jesus as the Good Shepherd. Jesus is caring and selfless to the point of laying down His life for the sheep. 2. God Supplies All of Our Needs (vv. 25-31) Now that we know about the character of the Shepherd, what does He do on behalf of the sheep? He protects. “And I will make with them a covenant of peace, and will cause the evil beasts to cease out of the land: and they shall dwell safely in the wilderness, and sleep in the woods” (Ezekiel 34:25). No one likes to live in fearful or traumatic conditions. Fear can become a normal part of life depending on where one lives, negative experiences, or enemies we confront. When God committed to a covenant of peace, He reversed His people’s status as the bane of society. The covenant established His role to protect the Israelites, prevent their enemies from pillaging and defeating them, and allow them to feel safe. Security, a basic human need, frees us from living in anxiety and fear. He blesses. “And I will make them and the places round about my hill a blessing; and I will cause the shower to come down in his season; there shall be showers of blessing” (Ezekiel 34:26). A “blessing” is the “pronouncement of the favor of God upon an assembled congregation.” A blessing is also “based upon the widespread biblical precedent” (see Genesis 27:27-29; Numbers 6:22-27) (Tyndale Bible Dictionary, 226-227). When God shepherds, He not only meets the basic needs of the sheep or His people, but He also blesses them or puts them in a position of favor. As His people, when we allow God to shepherd, lead, guide, and direct us, we can enjoy a state of spiritual favor. We can rest securely in Him for He cares for us and desires for us to live abundantly, successfully, and productively. He frees. “And (they) shall know that I am the LORD, when I have broken the bands of their yoke, and delivered them out of the hand of those that served themselves of them” (from Ezekiel 34:27). Under the Shepherd’s care, He will break the yoke of bondage from the Israelites’ captors. No longer would they be enslaved, restricted, or subject to another nation’s rule. Under the Good Shepherd they would possess freedom—from slavery, fear, and worry, free to live. He feeds. “And I will raise up for them a plant of renown, and they shall be no more consumed with hunger in the land, neither bear the shame of the heathen any more” (Ezekiel 34:29). All creatures must eat in order to survive, but if they do not maintain the means to find food, this can prove difficult. Forced into exile, the Israelites fended for themselves for the basic necessity of food. God promised that they would no longer hunger or question where their food would

come from as He would allow their barren land to produce again. Food provides the basic foundation for strength and sustenance in order to function effectively. We can see not only the literal aspect, but the spiritual implication, as well. If Christians do not properly feed on the Word of God, we will weaken spiritually. MORE LIGHT ON TEXT Ezekiel 34:23-31 23 And I will set up one shepherd over them, and he shall feed them, even my servant David; he shall feed them, and he shall be their shepherd. Our passage begins with a promise from the God of Israel to His people. The promise of a single “shepherd” (Heb. ra`ah, raw-AW), which means “pastor, ruler, teacher,” must have been unspeakably sweet for Ezekiel’s hearers. Why? Would not many shepherds be better? Not when those many shepherds of the people Is rael—their kings , their priests, their prophets—had been such faithless leaders. Of them, God says, “Ye eat the fat, and ye clothe you with the wool, ye kill them that are fed: but ye feed not the flock” (Ezekiel 34:3). One commentator helpfully sums up Ezekiel 34:3-6: “As a result, diseased sheep had died, the wounded had been untended, the wandering had been lost, and the flock decimated. Meanwhile, the shepherds had continued in their selfish way of life while the sheep were gobbled up by the wild beasts” (Briscoe, 125). Of course, God is not talking about literal sheep; God is comparing His people to creatures that are helpless without someone to guide them and care for them.

We know that Ezekiel spoke to the people at the lowest point of their history, after Jerusalem and its temple had been overrun by enemies and its people sent into exile in far away Babylon. Into this dismal situation, God speaks the hopeful words of one shepherd: one that could not be more different than the false prophets, compromised priests, and cruel kings that have failed to shepherd them into God’s way of flourishing. 24 And I the LORD will be their God, and my servant David a prince among them; I the LORD have spoken it. God now approaches His people using His covenant name, Yahweh: the name that points back to Exodus 3 and the call of Moses in the burning bush. Translated in the King James Version as “LORD” (always with capital letters), this name would have reminded the people of the promises God had made to them through Moses (see Exodus 19:46) and His other covenant messengers. One of those covenant messengers was David, a reminder of Israel’s golden age. Interestingly, in Ezekiel 34:24 he is called a “prince” (Heb. nasiy', nasa', naw-SEE, nawSAW), meaning “captain, leader” rather than a king. Perhaps Ezekiel uses “prince” instead of “king” for the reason mentioned above in the discussion of verse 23: Israel had had enough of kings! God makes it clear that this rescue by David will not come through the merely human line of King David’s authority. Rather, this “prince” stands at the right side of the true King in heaven and will come to bring

about His will. The Redeemer’s presence in the people’s midst will be the everlasting proof that God is with them. And there is nothing conditional or uncertain about this promise, for the same God who spoke heaven and earth into being now finishes the promise with finality: “I the LORD have spoken it.” 25 And I will make with them a covenant of peace, and will cause the evil beasts to cease out of the land: and they shall dwell safely in the wilderness, and sleep in the woods. Alongside the presence of their Messiah, the people of promise will enjoy a “covenant of peace.” A covenant in the ancient Near East was a binding contract between two parties sealed with some visible symbol of their mutual promise. God’s covenant with Moses, similarly, involved obligations to both parties. But other covenants, like the Abrahamic covenant, took place solely because of God’s gracious promise. This “covenant of peace” seems to be more of the latter kind. Whereas the covenant with Moses brought much futility because of Israel’s disobedience, God will now institute a covenant that brings wholeness and the enduring blessing of peace— shalom—to His people. As a result, Israel will enjoy unprecedented safety. The promise about freedom from “evil beasts” echoes that given in Leviticus 26:6, with the Mosaic covenant: “And I will give peace in the land, and ye shall lie down, and none shall make you afraid: and I will rid evil beasts out of the land, neither shall the sword go through your land.” In the Bible, the wilderness is

FOOD FOR THOUGHT DECENT AND IN ORDER

DR. JOYCE HARRELL

God wants things done decently and in order. How many times have we made that statement? Normally we say it when we want to squelch division or opposition in the Body of Christ and so we attempt to get things back on track. But there is no way we can get back on track with one another or in our ministries if we are not decent and in order first with God. It is vital that we have a pleasing relationship with God spiritually and financially. This is accomplished by being obedient to His Word in every area of our lives, such as evangelizing, making dis-

ciples, missions, returning the tithe, being obedient to our pastors, providing for our pastors, meeting their needs, loving one another and sharing with one another. Are their problems in your ministry? I learned this week that peace is brought about by being unified. Frustration, anger, jealousy, and strife come about because of a loss of focus, division occurs and people want to sit down or leave the church. Do you remember being happy in ministry, do you remember how well things use to be? Disagreements don’t just happen on its own, somewhere there was a loss of focus. The good news is, there is hope, things don’t have to stay the way they are, we can’t change other people but we can change ourselves. Change begins with each one of us when we seek to glorify God, intentionally do His will, edify the Body of Christ and remember it’s not about us but it’s about Him..

1-888-290-7277 always a place of danger and distress (think of the Israelites wandering in the desert, or Jesus facing Satan in the wild places). The “woods,” as mentioned in Ezekiel 34:25, were hardly better--full of darkness and peril. But when God’s ruler is on the throne and His covenant of shalom in place, these terrifying places become safe places, and God’s people are able to go to those places and perform the ultimate sign of safety and trust--falling asleep! 26 And I will make them and the places round about my hill a blessing; and I will cause the shower to come down in his season; there shall be showers of blessing. The previous verse shows us that God’s blessing is powerful and pervasive enough to reach the most empty and dangerous places of the world. But throughout the Old Testament, God’s power for Israel is especially profound in the heart of what is often called His “dwelling place.” That dwelling place is often known as “Zion,” which is also called the “holy hill”— or, as it is here, “my hill.” Israel, languishing far from their home in a lonely exile, would have taken unspeakable comfort from the promise that God’s own dwelling place among them—“my hill”— would be restored. And just as we see in Isaiah 2, Micah 4, and other places, the blessing of God’s presence on that hill blesses not only chosen Israel but also the nations that surround it. So, says Ezekiel, the “the places about my hill” (34:26) will find abundance and salvation, as well. 27 And the tree of the field shall yield her fruit, and the earth shall yield her

NEWS@RAISETHEPRAISENEWS.NET increase, and they shall be safe in their land, and shall know that I am the LORD, when I have broken the bands of their yoke, and delivered them out of the hand of those that served themselves of them. In case there was any doubt that Ezekiel was speaking of a return out of exile to the holy land of Palestine, this verse removes it. The agricultural pictures continue, all pointing to abundance and security: trees blooming and yielding good things; the soil springing forth with food for the harvest; utter safety in the land of promise. But unlike previous generations, who forgot the Lord in the midst of their comfort and prosperity, “They . . . shall know that I am the LORD.” Essentially, this verse promises another Exodus. Just as God at one time miraculously took His people out from bondage in Egypt, so now He will once again deliver them from their captors. Ezekiel’s words show that God has not forgotten His people, though their experience might appear to show otherwise. 28 And they shall no more be a prey to the heathen, neither shall the beast of the land devour them; but they shall dwell safely, and none shall make them afraid. God’s continuing promise makes it clearer that His people have been profoundly oppressed. In addition to the threatening “beast of the land,” of which we have already spoken, we find the claim that Israel has been “a prey to the heathen.” The use of the strong word “prey” implies, of course, that there is a predator and that God’s helpless people have been devoured. The cruelty of the

Babylonians was well known (see Daniel 2:5; 3:6), and it is not difficult to imagine the wandering, scattered Jews at the mercy of Babylonian predators. But in Ezekiel 34:28 these “heathen”—those not given the covenant promise of God—will not prey on the Jews forever, and the rule of the King on the hill of Zion will restore blessed security to the people of God. The fear that these Jews have known as a constant presence for years and years will be gone, says Ezekiel, when the Lord reestablishes His kingdom in their midst. 29 And I will raise up for them a plant of renown, and they shall be no more consumed with hunger in the land, neither bear the shame of the heathen any more. The unusual phrase “plant of renown” suggests more than one possibility for interpretation. In Hebrew the phrase is matta` shem (matTAW shame), and it literally means “a planting-place for a name” and could, therefore, refer to the promise of a return to the land and a place for the Jews to plant themselves once again—but in such a glorious way that the surrounding nations will also know God’s glory, or “renown.” Beyond this, the verse continues to celebrate the prosperity and wholeness Israel will enjoy; hunger, which in Ezekiel’s time was likely a frequent problem, would be heard of no more. Further, in Ezekiel 34:29 the “heathen” is mentioned again, but this time it is his or her “shame” that will no longer be borne. This probably means

not the shame that the heathen felt, but rather the shame the Jews felt at being wanderers in the heathen’s land, rootless and exposed to whatever oppression and violence the Babylonians felt inclined to inflict. 30 Thus shall they know that I the LORD their God am with them, and that they, even the house of Israel, are my people, saith the Lord GOD. “Thus,” meaning that “in this way” (NLT)— because of all the blessings mentioned in verses 23 and 29—the people of Israel will know that their exile is ended and that the blessing of God’s presence has returned. This is consistent with the patterns of the Mosaic covenant: God promised blessings in response to faithfulness and curses in response to unfaithfulness (see Deuteronomy 28). Under the new covenant, the picture is more complicated. Following their Master, God’s people often receive suffering, and not material blessing, in response to their faithfulness--for this is the path blazed for them by Jesus Himself. Such thoughts are relevant to Ezekiel 34 because, as these verses promise the better David to come, they anticipate the days in which God’s people would have a better hope than material blessing. One thing never changes, throughout the Scriptures: the promise of God that He is with them, and they are His people. This promise brings immense comfort to people in exile, both Israel in the days of Babylon and the church today. 31 And ye my flock, the flock of my pasture, are men, and I am your God, saith the Lord GOD. Having given such wondrous promises to Israel, God now brings the message full circle. By calling Israel His “flock,” He reminds them that they will not always be vulnerable to shepherds, who only feed themselves and neglect the care of the sheep. He will be their Shepherd and will send His Prince, the new David, to shepherd the people on His behalf. The reminder that the flock “are men, and I am your God” may be intended to remind Israel that they exist through Him and are helpless without Him. As the bumper sticker phrase puts it, “I am God, and you are not.” But the context shows most clearly that the emphasis is on the word “your”: “I am your God.” The overriding lesson of this passage, then, is that God is with His people at all times, without any exception, even when He might least seem to be with them.

THE PROCESS...... THE ECONOMIC SHIFT It’s incredible how those at the top have found that their original objective to hurt the under-served & working class even more by draining funding from government programs, taxation and down right thievery (White Collar Ambush Wall Street Fiasco) are feeling the resounding effects of their greed. What they cease to recognize is that poor people are quite accustom to being poor no matter how much more is stolen from the community. What they didn’t bank on was that their original plot would backfire and dangerously compromise their own quality of life; causing many to literally jump and take their families out before they did. Furthermore, they NEVER counted on the Economic Shift God by Andrea Andrews would render for His people. Have you taken the time to stop and ask yourself how you’ve made it for the past four years without a job? On unemployment? With furlough days? Part time hours? No health insurance...car insurance...home/renters insurance...life insurance? How you’ve managed to remain employed or maintain a business which employs others? Managed to get a loan? Bought a new home or car? Managed to go on vacation? Maybe even a first ever vacation (which wasn’t a “stay-cation”)? Kept your kids in daycare, private school and lessons? Managed to pay bills? On time? Hmmmmm...World economics and their money is no match for God’s Favor. God’s FAVOR? PRICELESS! Peace, Love & Blessings Your comments are welcomed at: theprocesschristiancounseling@gmail.com
