LOVE LIFTED ME B.C. YEAR CELEBRATION OF LOVE

Greetings in the name of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. The membership of the Love Lifted Me Missionary Baptist Church thank God for allowing us to reach this time, once again. The month of September has been set aside to show and share our love for our beloved Pastor, Rev. Dr. S. “Scuffie” Shigg and his lovely wife, our Leading Lady, Sis. Alyce Shigg. These services are scheduled each Sunday afternoon, starting at 3:30 P.M. with one evening service on Friday, September 27, starting at 7:30 P.M. Noted pastors and their church congregations, friends and well-wishers have been invited to help us in these

PASTOR REV. DR. S. “SCUFFIE” SHIGG & LEADING LADY SIS. ALYCE SHIGG

celebrations. Our theme is “Our Pastor, leading “The Lift” for 26 years, simply by God’s grace”, Ephesians 2:4-10. Remember, love is everywhere, and we are located on the south east and south west corners of Crenshaw and Hyde Park. The church’s address is 6501 Crenshaw Boulevard, Los Angeles 90043.

Sonja Dawson; and Jericho Baptist Assembly, Pastor Anthony Smith. October 6, 2013, the following guests will help us close out the celebration a mighty way: Greater New Unity Baptist Church, Pastor Randy Allison; Calvary Baptist Church, Pastor Virgil Jones; New Revelation Baptist Church, Pastor William Turner; and Union Baptist Church, Pastor Milton Marshall. Well now, whom do you suppose chose Dr. Hardwick for his vocation as a leader/ pastor? Glad you asked. He was chosen by God to become the under shepherd to lead God’s people, which is us, who make up the church, Praises of Zion. He over-sees, leads, guides, protects, and teaches, trains, counsels, he prays with and for us, and most importantly of all, he “compassionately” feeds God’s flock with spiritual nourishment, which is the Word of God. Pastor Hardwick is a man who loves God, and who loves God’s people. He is a husband to one wife…Mrs. Thelma Hardwick, our beautiful and charming First Lady, who can be seen by his side, praying, and encouraging him every step of the way. Following carefully in the steps of Jesus, Pastor Hardwick has faithfully gone through the city and by-ways, teaching and proclaiming the good news of the kingdom to sinners, and laying hands on those who are wrapped in disease and sickness. He is able through the Holy Spirit to meet challenges of this age head on. When he looks into crowds, and congregations he has compassion on them, because he knows they are bound, harassed, and helpless by the enemy. He sees them to be exactly what they are: sheep without a shepherd. With no hesitation, he realizes “The harvest is abundant, but the workers are few. Therefore, his prayer request is always the same: “Lord of the harvest, helps me connect and save some lost souls, and send out more willing and committed workers into your harvest field.” Therefore, we the members of Praises of Zion bow our heads humbly and thank God for our Pastor and wife. In Ephesians 4:11-13 it is written: “And he gave some apostles, and some prophets, and some evangelists, and some pastors…”, and we know without any doubt that He gave Pastor Hardwick and Mrs. Hardwick to Praises of Zion. To God be the glory! Dr. J. Benjamin Hardwick, Senior Pastor; Sister Faye Williams, Appreciation Services Chair-Person; and Sister Clarice Holmes, Reporter.

ONE FAITH FELLOWSHIP’S NUGGETS FOR THE SOUL EACH TIME The following paragraph of encouragement was penned in the COGIC Aug 18, 2013 Sunday School lesson: “The Israelites had faced obstacle after obstacle as they tried to rebuild the Wall at Jerusalem. Ridicule, accusations, harmful plots, and other injuries hurt them and threatened to kill them. However, EACH TIME Nehemiah had the small nation to pray and seek the wisdom of God. EACH TIME God gave them instructions on how to respond. EACH TIME they prayed, their faith increased and strengthened although

they feared for their families and their lives. They responded in wisdom, set up guards, prepared to fight, and never entangled themselves with their enemies’ trouble. The Israelites remained focused on the task at hand and the wall was finally finished.” Through life as we strive to fulfill various projects and even to live a victorious life; we will face great opposition in our mind, body, spirit, relationships, professions, etc. Therefore, these words offer encouragement, direction and wisdom which SHOULD BE APPLIED IN

VICTORY BAPTIST CHURCH On Sunday September 8, 2013 The Usher board #2 will be celebrating its 60th Anniversary during the 9am service. Theme : “Ushers with patience & Tolerance” - Romans 15:1-7. Guest Speaker Rev. Raymond Chandler. The New Voices of Victory 4th Annual

Musical will be held September 22, 2013 at 3:00pm Theme: Love & Prayer - Psalms 92:14 Guest : Dr. Rodena Preston & GMWA, Rev. Ira & Babara Lynn. Both events are located at 4802 S. Mckinley Ave Los Angeles, Ca 90011 Rev. W. E. Jenkins, Pastor.

OUR LIVES! Let’s note the following points: 1) Realize that no one is exempt or is the only one facing obstacles; for

we all do. 2) There will always be fierce opposition to whatever we attempt to accomplish, whether it is large or small. 3) The devil and those who are against our advancement will use MANY DIFFERENT schemes to discourage us. 4) BUT, NO MATTER HOW HOPELESS THE SITUATION SEEMS, REMEMBER THERE IS A “HOWEVER FACTOR” WHICH WILL REVIVE AND STRENGTHEN US IN THE MIDST OF THE HOPELESSNESS. When opposition arose, EACH TIME Nehemiah had them to pray and to seek

God’s wisdom. 5) No matter how many times they prayed to God, EACH TIME DaddyGod gave them instructions on how to respond. Daddy-God doesn’t get tired of us coming to Him over and over, when we come in unwavering faith based on OUR PAST EXPERIENCES of His love and care for us. 6) EACH TIME they prayed, their faith increased and strengthened although they were fearful. When we spend time with the Lord God Continued On Page 14 EACH TIME ........

AIM for Change

By the end of the lesson we will: KNOW and UNDERSTAND that the Sabbath is to be honored; SHARE with others the importance of honoring the Sabbath; and PLAN to honor the Sabbath.

Nehemiah 13:15 In those days saw I in Judah some treading wine presses on the sabbath, and bringing in sheaves, and lading asses; as also wine, grapes, and figs, and all manner of burdens, which they brought into Jerusalem on the sabbath day: and I testified against them in the day wherein they sold victuals. 16 There dwelt men of Tyre also therein, which brought fish, and all manner of ware, and sold on the sabbath unto the children of Judah, and in Jerusalem. 17 Then I contended with the nobles of Judah, and said

unto them, What evil thing is this that ye do, and profane the sabbath day? 18 Did not your fathers thus, and did not our God bring all this evil upon us, and upon this city? yet ye bring more wrath upon Israel by profaning the sabbath. 19 And it came to pass, that when the gates of Jerusalem began to be dark before the sabbath, I commanded that the gates should be shut, and charged that they should not be opened till after the sabbath: and some of my servants set I at the gates, that there should no burden be brought in on the sabbath day. 20 So the merchants and sellers of all kind of ware lodged without Jerusalem once or twice. 21 Then I testified against them, and said unto them, Why lodge ye about the wall? if ye do so again, I will lay hands on you. From that time forth came they no more on the sabbath. 22 And I commanded the Levites that they should cleanse themselves, and that they should come and keep the gates, to sanctify the sabbath day. Remember me, O my God, concerning this also, and spare me according to the greatness of thy mercy.

IN FOCUS John volunteered as a Sunday School worker at his church. He also worked full-time to support his wife and three kids. God blessed him with a promotion at his job, which required that he work beyond a normal 9-to-5 day. Sometimes he traveled to do site visits out of town, and due to the economy, his company laid off several people. John did not get laid off, but his workload increased in order to make up the shortfall in the reduction of staff. Because of his heavy workload and travel schedule, John began to miss a lot of Sunday school. Most Sundays he was too tired to attend Sunday school, and sometimes he would miss church altogether. His wife became very concerned and discussed her feelings with John, but he refused to listen. She then turned to their pastor. When the pastor first spoke to John, he resisted and insisted that in order to keep his job he needed to keep his current schedule. Through the prayers of his wife and pastor, John’s spiritual eyes opened and he learned how to truly trust God — and that included worshiping God on Sundays. We must always give God the firstfruits of everything He affords us, and He will in turn bless us with more—including our time. Today’s lesson is about honoring the Sabbath. THE PEOPLE, PLACES AND TIMES When God first established the Children of Israel as a nation, He did not just deliver them from the Egyptians and give them a land to dwell in; He provided everything they needed in order to fully function as a proper nation. From Exodus to Deuteronomy, we read how He set out a comprehensive structure, which framed the constitution of their lives. He provided laws for personal injuries, property rights, civil and criminal matters, and various other situations, as well as details regarding the people’s worship. He even outlined the feasts and holidays they should celebrate. In return, God required their utter obedience to Him as their Ruler. They were to show complete submission to Him as their King and total adoration of Him as their God. However, time and time again through history, we see their continued rebellion and disobedience to God, which eventually led to their exile. In Nehemiah, hopes existed that the Israelites would not repeat the past, but through their restoration, live an obedient, committed and dedicated life to the ordinances of God. BACKGROUND After the nation of Judah rebuilt the wall, the Israelites continued to slowly rebuild their nation. Rebuilding their nation required not just the physical effort of constructing houses, roads, and the Temple. Their laws, ordinances and spiritual framework needed reshaping, too. The wall provided safety and security from outsid-

ers and set a boundary around them as a nation. As a result, immediately following the wall’s completion, scribes read the Law aloud to inform and set the groundwork for their constitution. Once the law was read, this motivated the remnant in Judah to confess their sins and recommit to God as a nation based on the original law He ordered. They made a covenant and set out detailed obligations, which they would comply with in order to please God. This document set the legal framework for their establishment as a nation with Nehemiah as governor over the land. He and the people voted for leaders to rule over various provinces set up across Jerusalem. In addition, the Levites were reestablished as priests, and procedures were created for the Temple such as Levitical priest service, tithes, and worship. IN DEPTH 1. Sabbath Observance (Nehemiah 13:15-18) Once the Israelites accepted the law again it meant they also accepted observance of the Sabbath. “The formal institution of the Sabbath is a basic part of the Mosaic Law system. Each division of the law contains specific sections relating to the practice of the Sabbath: the moral law (the Ten Commandments), the civil law (Exodus 31:14), and the ceremonial law (Leviticus 23:3). The keeping of the Sabbath was a sign that God truly ruled Israel. To break His Sabbath law was to rebel against Him—an action meriting death (Exodus 21:14). Society was not to seek advancement outside of submission to God. Therefore, all work except acts of mercy, necessity, and worship were forbidden on the Sabbath” (Nelson’s New Illustrated Bible Dictionary, 1106). To disobey the Sabbath meant to profane the holiness of the day, or to make it unclean or unholy. In the newly established nation, Nehemiah observed that some Israelites did not observe the Sabbath. He found some treading wine presses, bringing in sheaves, saddling donkeys, and selling produce and goods on the Sabbath. The Israelites performed these tasks so much on the Sabbath that merchants from other nations began to come through the gates on the Sabbath to do business with the Israelites. Nehemiah challenged the leaders of Judah regarding their conduct in how they broke the Sabbath. He reminded them that such behavior originally contributed to their demise and exile from the Promised Land. If it continued and they did not cor-

Keep In Mind:

“And I commanded the Levites that they should cleanse themselves, and that they should come and keep the gates, to sanctify the sabbath day. Remember me, O my God, concerning this also, and spare me according to the greatness of thy mercy” (Nehemiah 13:22).

Focal verses:

rect it, such behavior would certainly bring wrath and contribute to another downfall. Nehemiah reminded them about this; he also took corrective action by closing the gates to the city so that the Israelites could not leave the city to conduct business and outside merchants could not come into the city to conduct business. “And it came to pass, that when the gates of Jerusalem began to be dark before the sabbath, (he) commanded that the gates should be shut, and charged that they should not be opened till after the sabbath: and some of (his) servants set (he) at the gates, that there should no burden be brought in on the sabbath day” (Nehemiah 13:19). In the Old Testament, to observe the Sabbath was a key law the Israelites needed to follow. If they broke the law and disobeyed God, they needed to cleanse themselves. Nehemiah commanded the Levite priests to cleanse themselves in order to assist with keeping the gates as well as to sanctify the Sabbath. To “sanctify” refers to a “separation from ordinary use to a sacred purpose” (McClintock and Strong, 331). The Sabbath day was set aside for Judah to focus on God— to rest from all their daily labor and a day of obedience to Him as King and Ruler over all their lives and possessions. 2. Keeping the Sabbath (vv. 19-22) When we compare the Old Testament with the New Testament, a number of references indicate that keeping the Sabbath refers more to a principle than strict literal observance. For example Colossians 2:16 says, “Let no man therefore judge you in meat, or in drink, or in respect of an holyday, or of the new moon, or of the sabbath days.” Additionally, in Mark 3, we see Jesus healing on the Sabbath and Mark 2:27-28 (NASB) recounts, “Jesus said to them, ‘The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath. So the Son of Man is Lord even of the Sabbath.’” What God established under the law in the Old Testament was still expected in the New Testament, but in a different way. Some denominations believe that believers are obligated to keep a formal Sabbath day to occur on either Saturday or Sunday. They feel that this is a part of the moral system as set out through the Ten Commandments, which should bind all Christians. Other denominations do not take the Sabbath observance literally, but believe it should be taken figuratively and instead “keep the Sabbath” through a worship day on Sunday, which is observed by attending church. “The Sabbath is a means by which a person’s living pattern imitates God’s (Exodus 20:3-11). Work is followed by rest. This idea is expressed by the Hebrew word for Sabbath, which means ‘cessation.’ . . . a time for God’s people to think about and enjoy what God has accomplished . . . (It) holds promise of the ultimate salvation that God will accomplish for His people. As certainly as He delivered them from Egypt through Moses, so will He deliver His people from sin at the end

of the age through the Great Redeemer (Genesis 3:15; Hebrews 4:1) . . . (Also,) the Sabbath includes the idea and practice of . . . a day for public convocation (Leviticus 23:3)” (Nelson’s, 1107). On this special day, His people could gather together in public worship to signify their submission to His lordship over them and their way of living (Exodus 31:13; Ezekiel 20:12). Regardless of one’s understanding of whether the Sabbath should be formally or symbolically kept, the key purpose of why God instituted it should always be maintained. We keep a Sabbath day in order to rest from our daily jobs, conducting of business, anxiety or worry. We keep a Sabbath day in order to reflect on the goodness of God and His blessings toward us. We keep a Sabbath day in order to set aside and take time out of our week to publicly worship Him as a way to demonstrate our submission to His Lordship over our lives. SEARCH THE SCRIPTURES 1. What were the Israelites doing which contributed to their breaking the Sabbath (Nehemiah 13:15-20)? 2. What negative things could occur when the Israelites profaned the Sabbath (vv. 18, 21)? DISCUSS THE MEANING Describe the various meanings of the Sabbath and the reasons why Christians should “keep” it, regardless of denomination.

LESSONS IN OUR SOCIETY One of the biggest problems facing America is its diminishing reliance on God, decline in church attendance and reduced regard for Christian-based principles. How can believers in the United States help reverse this trend and work toward building up America, which was originally founded as a nation under God? MAKE IT HAPPEN The busyness of life can distract Christians from performing basic duties, such as reading one’s Bible, praying, meditating on God’s Word and even attending church. Due to family commitments, job responsibilities, and many other tasks we must do each day, sometimes we forget or neglect to take time out for God. As you go through this week, make a point each day to spend time talking to God. If you feel as though time will not permit, try God. You will see that once you take time for Him, He will in turn give you the time required to take care of everything you need. FOLLOW THE SPIRIT What God wants me to do: REMEMBER YOUR THOUGHTS Special insights I have learned: MORE LIGHT ON TEXT Nehemiah 13:15-22 15 In those days saw I in Judah some treading wine presses on the sabbath, and bringing in sheaves, and lading asses; as also wine, grapes, and figs, and all manner of burdens, which they brought into

Jerusalem on the sabbath day: and I testified against them in the day wherein they sold victuals. In today’s text, we see an assertive Nehemiah who refused to allow the Sabbath— the Lord’s Day—to be profaned by trading, buying, and selling which was clearly disobedience to God’s command. He was concerned with honoring the Sabbath. In Hebrew, “sabbath” is shabbath (shabBAWTH); it refers to the seventh day of the week and can also mean “day of atonement.” God had done so much already for the Israelites in delivering them from bondage, helping them to build the wall of Jerusalem, and also returning their dignity as a nation that Nehemiah was not going to tolerate sin in the camp. He would not tolerate them working at their vineyards, preparing loads to take to a marketplace, and otherwise carrying on with their chores as though this was just any other day. This day was set aside to worship the Lord—to bring praises and thanksgiving to Him—and nothing less would be tolerated. 16 There dwelt men of Tyre also therein, which brought fish, and all manner of ware, and sold on the sabbath unto the children of Judah, and in Jerusalem. To add insult to injury, men from Tyre brought fish and various wares and sold to the Israelites on the Sabbath. They had the nerve to do it in Jerusalem on the Lord’s Day— the day set aside for worship—where the new wall had been built. Nehemiah found this offensive and knew that it would be offensive unto the Lord. He knew that His people had gotten in trouble with the

Lord in the first place because of their disobedience. This was the major reason why they were sent into captivity for 70 years and needed deliverance. Under his watch, Nehemiah made sure that God’s rules were obeyed. 17 Then I contended with the nobles of Judah, and said unto them, What evil thing is this that ye do, and profane the sabbath day? So Nehemiah contended with the nobles of Judah. In Hebrew, the word “contended” is riyb (reeb) and it means, “strove physically, confronted, made a complaint.” In other words, he went to the ones in charge and voiced his complaint—he let them know that the activities were very much out of order on the Sabbath, and something had to be done right away to alleviate the problem. In fact, he called these activities “an evil thing.” The word “evil” in Hebrew is ra` (rah). It means, “bad, disagreeable, malignant, displeasing.” In Nehemiah’s sight, this selling and buying profaned the Sabbath. In Hebrew, “profane” is chalal (khaw-LAL), meaning, “to defile, pollute, or desecrate.” 18 Did not your fathers thus, and did not our God bring all this evil upon us, and upon this city? yet ye bring more wrath upon Israel by profaning the sabbath. Nehemiah saw the blatant disobedience as bringing more wrath upon Israel, as their fathers’ disobedience had done. In Hebrew, the word “wrath,” (charown khaw-RONE), means “anger, heat, burning of anger (by God).” In other words, he reminds them that it was their disobedience that brought about God’s wrath before, and

they would not risk this disobedience bringing His wrath again. For Nehemiah, profaning of the Sabbath was so serious that he took charge and commanded that the gates be shut and that they not be opened again until after the Sabbath. He ensured that God’s Day would not be violated in any way. This sent the merchants and sellers the message that it would not be business as usual on the Sabbath. This was a holy, consecrated day set aside to worship a holy God. 21 Then I testified against them, and said unto them, Why lodge ye about the wall? if ye do so again, I will lay hands on you. From that time forth came they no more on the sabbath. Nehemiah was willing to lay hands on anyone who did not heed his words. It was so important that they not disobey God’s commands that he was willing to take anyone to task who did not clear their wares from around the wall. 22 And I commanded the Levites that they should cleanse themselves, and that they should come and keep the gates, to sanctify the sabbath day. Remem-

ber me, O my God, concerning this also, and spare me according to the greatness of thy mercy. The next step was a time of purification. Again, Nehemiah showed his great leadership by commanding the Levites (those set aside by God to do special work for Him) to cleanse themselves—to sanctify the Sabbath day. In Hebrew, “sanctify” is qadash (kawDASH), and it means “to be set apart, to be consecrated, to be hallowed.” The Sabbath is to be a holy day because our God is holy. Nehemiah recognized this and in no way was he willing to violate God’s commands. After restoring the sanctity of the Sabbath, Nehemiah then asked God to remember him and show mercy toward him. In other words, Nehemiah did not want God to bring punishment like Israel experienced in the past, and he wanted to be remembered when God was passing out His blessings. COMPETENCY There has to be a beginning point

Jeremiah 12:1-6

By: Jerry Melton

How is your strength and power in relation to biblical leadership? Do circumstances run all over you? Is your walk and salvation tried to the max? God will allow things to come into your life to assist your maturity in faith. I want you to know that you must have a starting point for competency in God. Why is it important to build a competent walk with God? Lets examine why you must work at being competent in God. 1. The nature of life will bring up some challenging issues. Jer 12:1-2. “... wherefore are all they happy that deal very treacherously? Thou hast planted them, yea, they have taken root; they bring forth fruit.” Jeremiah faced issues that challenged him and were upcoming issues in the nation of Judah. Your issues will (should) propel you to take up the issue before God. a. “Happy are all they that deal treacherously.” People will be

an issue in your life; let this make you a better leader; were you work harder at it. God will allow this so He can address the issues through chosen vessels. Challenging issues are designed to be starting points for growth. Put the time and effort to think and work your way through your challenges; and seek godly progression in the solution. Then the challenges will bring growth. 2. We need competency in our relationship with God in order to persevere in life. Jer 12:3-4. “But thou knowest me: thou hast seen me and tried mine heart towards thee...” Jeremiah was tested in Gods fire; he grew in God and learned to persevere. a. “Thou knowest me.” One of the ways God draws out who we are is to put the heat on and see what we do. God allows this kind of testing to cause you to learn to exercise your spiritual muscles. Some call this exercising your salvation and relationship with

God. The only way to develop competency in your relationship is to exercise it; work on it. 3. If you don’t begin in your learning of God in life’s simplified anxieties; how will you make it through life’s complex scenario’s? Jer 12:5. “If foot men have wearied thee how can you contend with horses?” You must persevere in small things to be prepared for real tests. a. “Wearied thee.” Are your contenders wearing you out? How will you stand in life’s bigger battles? You must so exercise your connection with God to take on the things Satan throws at you; both small and big. Jesus used the illustration about money to make a similar point. Something to the effect that if your not faithful with small things (unrighteous mammon); then who will trust you with the real riches? Just like faithfulness is required in Continued On Page 15

“BLESSED BE GOD”

Though it is believed to have been written by David, the writer of Psalm 66 remains unknown. This Psalm is fully loaded with some very familiar and powerful verbiage. For instance, the text opens with, “Make a joyful noise unto the Lord”. For today’s reading I’d like to focus on verse twenty which reads, Bless be God, which hath not turned away my prayer, nor his mercy from me. The undeserved, unearned mercy of God is an absolute formidable force that we should hold in reverent appreciation. It is because of the Lord’s mercies that we are not consumed. Many times we talk about being kept from hurt, harm, and danger. In the context of mercy some of that

Lord. I share the sentiments of the psalmist, Blessed Be God. The word bless comes from the same word that we get the word eulogy from. It means to speak well of. The psalmist is therefore saying “Speak well of the Lord” who has not turned away my prayer nor his mercy from me. As we exercise purity of heart, which is a result of worship, we have unhampered access to the ear of God. The ears of the Lord are open unto the cry of the righteous. Not only does he hear us when we pray he is listening for our prayers. Wherever you may find yourself today, I would like to encourage you on this wise. Rejoice in the immutable truth that as you are diligent in moving towards God in obedience, repentance where necessary, and in the desire to be pleasing unto him this psalm cites two awesome benefits. The benefits are that God has not turned away our prayer and neither has he turned away his mercy from us. Just in case you ran out of something to say in worship, this psalm gives us two things for which to speak well of the Lord. Blessed be God!

CONTROLLING THE DAILY BATTLE Though we can’t control the rain We can prevent getting soaked We can use a wide umbrella Plus wear a durable raincoat Though we can’t control birds flying But they’re prevented from landing on our scalp Also on our feet and shoulders For a birdie power nap There are things can’t prevent An example would be our thoughts Wickedness might enter our mind Regardless of how good we’re taught A married man smiles at a woman Or a married woman at a man Their thoughts might turn to lust But self control sabotages the plan Wrong doing is usually tempting And it always cross our mind But when the spirit of God is within us Our self control walks the righteous line Daily we must renew our mind Sin relentlessly will whisper in our ear But we must overcome our thoughts A daily battle that’s fought all year

hurt, harm, and danger would have been brought on by our own choices and decisions. But mercy is appropriated and causes us to not get what we rightly deserve. Glory to God! Let’s be clear. This Psalm is not encouraging us to relish in disobedience or to gloat in wrong doing. None of us need a permission slip to sin. By virtue of the fact that in the eighteenth verse of this same psalm the writer clearly establishes the point that if I regard iniquity in my heart the Lord will not hear me indicates that the fore-stated is not his position either. This brings clarity to the purity of thought and context to the reverence the writer has for God with respect to God’s mercy. It reminds me of what the church mothers use to say once upon a time when we had testimony service. They would say, “I should have been cut off and gone”. There is certain of today’s church that would say that’s a negative confession and that it gives way to a sin consciousness. I see it as a catalyst for authentic worship of our worthy

NOT ROOTED IN CIRCUMSTANCES

May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope. – Romans 15:13

byANDREA Andrea ANDREWS Andrews It’s your birthday. A huge celebration is held in your honor. You receive multiple expensive gifts – many of which you deeply desired. As a result

you are “happy”. You receive a long awaited promotion on your current job. It comes with a great deal of responsibility, a signing bonus and a huge pay raise. As a result you are “happy”. The pastor finally recognizes you are able to run the youth ministry at your church. It comes with a great deal of responsibility, countless hours of dedication and a title. As a result, you are “happy”. These are all situations which, from a human aspect, prompt the

emotion of happiness – happiness which is merely circumstantial. Without them, though…are you still able to exhibit the same level of enthusiasm? The same emotion? Happiness is not a characteristic of God as The Holy Spirit, but “joy” IS. Joy is second ONLY to love on God’s list of The Fruit of The Spirit. We ALL know how profound “love” is in God’s eyes. Joy is monumentally significant as well. However, joy is not root-

ed in circumstance. In fact, James records it as “Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds,” – James 1:2. This would indicate that we are “expected” to remain joyful at ALL times no matter the circumstances or situation – crisis or challenges. God expects us to “rejoice in Him ALWAYS”. Our daily goal must be to emulate His characteristics (fruit) as a righteous people; one of the many benefits of salvation being able to

be a direct mirror of The Holy Spirit living within us. So, if no one ever throws a birthday party/dinner in our honor, we never get the promotion we “feel” we deserve or if we are never asked to lead a ministry in our church, joy MUST STILL ABOUND in us. It is God’s requirement of us. Joy is about abundant “giving” which is a unique aspect of “abundant living”. Peace, Love & Blessings w w w. t h e p r o c e s s c h r i s tiancounseling.com

LEADERS ARE NOT EXEMPT FROM TRIALS

FOOD FOR THOUGHT

DR. JOYCE HARRELL

Because you are a leader, please do not think that you are exempt from trials. As a

matter of fact it’s just the opposite. Because you are a leader it is guaranteed that you will face adversity. Satan does not want you to be effective in ministry and thus he will throw whatever he can in your way to get you off track. As a leader you will go through some things that might seem mind boggling. You will face some things that seem impossible to bear. But trials don’t come to break us, but they come to grow us (no test no testimony).

I’ve also come to realize that God allows us to go through hardships so that we might be able to minister to someone else. Our hardships help us gain a new perspective, or a new understanding that we would have never received, if it had not been for that particular season of adversity. James tells us to count it joy when we fall into diverse temptations. After a word study on the word “count” (hegeomai), James is simply telling us to govern our

thoughts. In other words, have authority over our thoughts before we fall. So that when we do fall, we don’t fall apart. Also, notice that James said “when you fall,” not if you fall. Trials will come, but the good news is nothing happens to us that God is not aware of and has not all ready approved. So, how will you handle your next storm? Will you go through trusting God, or will you go through having a pity party? Which one will bring God glo-

ry? Dr. Joyce is a lay-person, under the leadership of Pastor Ticey Brown, at Mt. Tabor Missionary Baptist Church, where she serves as the Strategic Leadership Director. stewardship; so faithfulness is required in leadership; or any other of the gifts of the Holy Spirit. You must practice dependability. Your faithfulness will pay off. Let me just say there comes a time we all fail at some point and need Gods grace; but when we recover; we need to return to usefulness. 4. Life’s issues will require you to build on previous established strengths. Jer 12:6. “For even thy brethren, and the house of they father; even they have dealt treacherously with thee.” Such treacherous acts of a persons own family will require you to establish and build on previous well placed steps. a. “Even they dealt treacherously.” You can be sure of close associates testing your abilities and spiritual competency. You’ll have to depend on Gods help and those principles; from the Word of God; that secured you position in the past. Hebrews 6:1-2 tells us to build on those basic principles; and don’t just stay at the basics. Establish biblical principles that secure your position before your contenders; then seek God for your forward progress. Conclusion: So allow trigger challenges to advance you in Gods will; then you demonstrate spiritual leadership.
