NEW HOPE BAPTIST CHURCH LONG BEACH NAMES NEW PASTOR… REVEREND COLEMAN L. HART

PASTOR COLEMAN L HART AND WIFE

New Hope Baptist Church is excitedly preparing for the Installation Service of their new Pastor on Sunday, September 27, 2009 at 3:00 pm. Pastor Coleman Leon Hart was selected and named the third Pastor of New Hope Baptist Church, following Pastor Reuben English who retired in May, 2008.

Pastor Coleman Leon Hart is one of seven children born to Odes and Jennie Hart in Boughton, Arkansas. He later moved to Muskegon, Michigan where he met and married wife, Judith E. Conley, of 48 years. They have four children, eight grandchildren and three greatgrandchildren. In 1962, the Hart Family moved to Long Beach, California where their first residence

was at 1059 California Avenue (now known as “Martin Luther King Blvd”) which was conveniently located across the street from New Hope Baptist Church’s original location. The Hart Family joined New Hope Baptist Church in 1978, giving Pastor Hart and his wife a total of 31 years as dedicated and faithful members. Reflecting back on his ministerial calling, “ It was June, 1981 when I preached my very first sermon….it was seven years later when I was ordained into the Gospel of Ministry.” There were three individuals who were very influential in Pastor Hart’s calling to serve the Lord. Reverend Nathaniel J. Kirkpatrick, founder of New Hope Baptist Church in 1943, started the preparation for

Pastor Hart’s involvement in the ministry. It was in 1972, when New Hope Baptist Church moved to their new building at 1160 E. New York Street that Pastor Hart still remembers the profound statement cited by Pastor Kirkpatrick, “There are Godly rewards when true faith is in God”. Pastor Hart received his early teaching of God’s Word through Ronnie Majors, the Minister of Education at New Hope. Pastor Reuben English, New Hope’s 2nd Minister, was his spiritual mentor and taught him that his destiny was in the hands of GOD by citing his defining quote, “Man Chooses…. But GOD Decides”! As the new Minister of New Hope Baptist Church, Pastor Coleman Leon Hart’s vision is to be led by the Spirit of God……to

build, heal, and develop lives for the glory and honor of God. Members of New Hope have already started to witness Pastor Hart move forward with his spiritual lead, when he states: “If You Mess Up….Fess Up!! Then Ask GOD For HIS Forgiveness. Joining New Hope Baptist for this joyous celebrated occasion will be guest speakers Pastor Ronald Majors from Arkansas, and Pastor Keith Carroll from Cornerstone Baptist Church in Los Angeles. Installation Service for Pastor Coleman Leon Hart will be held on Sunday, September 27, 2009 at 3:00 p.m. at 1160 New York Street, Long Beach, California. For information, please call Sister Owens at (562) 599-3509.

Rosecrans Ave., Compton, CA. 90222 (on the corner of Rosecrans and Matthisen, between Wilmington and Willowbrook Avenues.) For more information please call (323) 636-7989. We also invite you to worship with us in our Sunday services at 7:45 a.m. (Contemporary) and 11:00 a.m. (Traditional). AN EVENING WITH WAYNE ANTHONY IN CONCERT

Birthday Celebration for Sis. Barbara Calhoun

SIS. BARBARA CALHOUN

“Happy Birthday Greetings will ring out on Saturday, October 31, 2009, as we celebrate another milestone in the life of Sister Barbara Calhoun, our Friend and Sister. GOD has indeed blessed this anointed, gifted, talented , and spirit-filled young woman, to be able to celebrate another year

of worshipping, of serving and praising His Holy Name. Sister Calhoun is not a stranger to our Church Community, for she has graced many churches with her presence; whether it be singing or delivering the Gospel message, to a waiting congregation. Her style is her own; Her manners are unique; her humbleness is welcoming, and her generosity knows no bounds. Sister Calhoun is a member of the Tree of Life Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of Pastor William David Lowe, and serves as the Minister of Music, President of the Choir, Sunday School Teacher, Chairperson of the Church Anniversary, and member of the Board of Trustees, one of the Founding Members of “Women for an Emergency Conference that

is held Annually and attended by Woman from all over the State of California. GOD has truly smiled on this Young Woman and because of her faithfulness, her dedication, and her love for the Lord, we would like to pause and say “Happy Birthday” to Sister Calhoun. We extend a hearty invitation to all of her family, friends, and wellwishers, in helping us celebrate this special day with her. This event will take place on Saturday, October 31, 2009 from 11:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. at the Proud Bird Restaurant, 11022 Aviation Blvd., Los Angeles, CA 90045. For ticket information, please feel free to contact Sister Emma D. Thurman @ (310) 625-2486. Thanking you in advance, “To God Be The Glory”.

BRO. WAYNE ANTHONY

“Sing unto the Lord a new song! Sing to the Lord, all the earth. Sing unto the Lord, bless His name. Proclaim the good news of His salvation from day to day. Declare His glory among the nations, His wonders among peoples.” (Psalm 96:1-2) With the approval and blessing of Dr. J. Benjamin Hardwick, Senior Pastor of Praises of Zion M.B.C., your presence is requested to share in “AN EVENING WITH WAYNE ANTHONY IN CONCERT”: a man of God seeking to convey the Gospel of Jesus Christ in word and song to be held at Praise City, October 10, 2009., at 5:00 p.m. We

are located at 8222 S. San Pedro Street, in Los Angeles. You may call the church office for further information at (323) 750-1033. WHO IS WAYNE ANTHONY? Brother Wayne Anthony grew up in New Jersey and the New York area. At the youthful age of 13 years old he secured a recording contract with Roulette Records, which included such names as Dinah Washington, Tommy James, and The Shondells. Later in his career he appeared at the world famous Apollo Theater in Harlem, headlining for a week with Solomon Burke, Sam & Dave, and The Sherrill’s. He moved to sunny California later in his career, and he became associated with Sister Rodena Preston, and became a part of her choir, “The Voices of Deliverance.” Out of this association with Sister Preston, he was afforded the opportunity to meet Rev. James Cleveland, and was asked to become a part of “The James Cleveland

Singers”. For 23 years he traveled and sang with the group. Because of his great vocal talents, he was noticed by Paul Anka, and became a background singer for him as well as Herbie Hancock, Cat Stevens, and Me’chelle Columbia. He has also tried his hand at acting, and has appeared in such films as “The Blues Brothers”, “Sparkle”, and “The Idol Maker”. However it is the world of Gospel that has truly show cased the talents of Wayne, and he is recognized through out the church community as God’s own singer of the Gospel. He is married to Mrs. Cheryl Houston-Roach, and has several children. WAYNE ANTHONY, THE GOSPEL SINGER: It has been said that a singer literally prays to God with his marvelous voice while ministering to all who hear him. Such is the case with Wayne Anthony. Because he sings under the anointing of the Holy Spirit, he is able to transport his audience through song on a journey to heaven. There are a few things that Continued on Page 4

In love and memory of the widow Ms. Reed, I speak to those that continue to grieve Psalms: 23 was her favorite scripture to read. She encouraged many to love God and to believe. She was a virtuous woman and by GOD she was taught. A devote Christian, Believer, Saint a true Warrior and Soldier that fought. Never let the enemy see her sweat, she whip the devil with the Bible using every verse in the text. Psalms 19:14 was a scripture she picked apart, it reads “let the Words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight O Lord my strength and my redeemer.” You, saw the presence of the Lord upon her, every time you saw her. She looked to the hills from which

She spoke of visions and dreams that would come to pass. Her last assignment was a fourth day fast. OUR Hallelujah to the CHRIST as we plan a celebration acknowledging our pastor and wife for 27 Years of devotion to the cause of Christ. We are happy and pleased to say we are the recipients of the words recorded in Jeremiah 3:15 “and I will give you pastors according to thine heart, which shall feed you with knowledge and understanding.” We thank God for this kind of pastoral leadership. A special invitation is extended to our fellow laborers, family and friends to join us in giving homage to our Pastor, Preacher and Teacher “OUR PASTOR A MAN OF INTEGRITY FAITHFULLY PREACHINGAND TEACHING THE WORD OF GOD.” (SCRIPTURES PSALM 1:1-3, JEREMIAH 3:15 AND ROMANS 1:16-17.) We feel this theme and scriptures describe our beloved Pastor Solomon L. Drake. This celebration would be incomplete

without acknowledging our Pastor’s wife, Sis. Isabel Drake, a woman that allows the rivers of faith, joy, peace and contentment to overflow in her life giving her many opportunities to sow seeds into the lives of the families of Greater Ebenezer along side her pastor and husband. Both she and Pastor share in the lives of the families here at the church and in the community in all circumstances. Our children and youth have a special place in their ministry whereby all of our young people truly feel they are not only spiritual but biological family members of the Drake household. The celebration started Sunday, September 20th at the 8:00 am service: Theme speakers for the day were Bro Chris Johnson, Bro. Martin Evans and Sis. Niema Curley. At the 4 o’clock service Pastor

was easy to trace, when she had a taste for Harold and Belle’s which was her favorite place, no need for the menu. She kept her order simple salad, bread, liver and onions, clam chowder and a large vase of Shirley Temple. This made her smile, I remember her dimples. Hattie was a wealth of wisdom and intelligence, women with poise and a spirit of elegances. Her conversation was season with grace and if it wasn’t about GOD it was irrelevant Her living was not in vain and her history is the evidence. She lived

long enough to see Obama our Black President. Bandren was the place of resident but now she is with the King of Kings with a greater inheritance. Love yea one another was her final quote! Love GOD WITH ALL OF YOUR HEART cause He’s our only hope!!!! July 8, 1927 was her date of birth and on August 26, 2009 on Wednesday Night she departed from this earth. Written by: Mc. TESTAMONIE.

Terry Brown and the Liberty Baptist Church choir and congregation blessed us with sacred songs and a gospel message about a man on “A Divine Assignment.” Next Sunday, September 27th we expect another joyous day of celebration our speakers are: 8:00 am Sis. Jessica Fair.and Deaconess Tracy Williams at the mid-morning services. At the 2:00pm we will have a special ceremony celebrating the opening of the “Dr. Solomon L. From “THE LIFT”

PASTOR S.S. SHIGG

Greetings in the name of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. As the members, here at “The Lift,” turn our works towards our Church Anniversary, we have much to be Thankful for. Someone once said, “You see the glory, but you don’t really know the story.” Today, “The Lift” is located on both sides of Crenshaw and Hyde Park Blvd, with several ministry works located on other properties, but God directed people to help to secure and maintain the work being done here. Just as God directed the widow in 1 Kings 17:9, to give to the prophet that he might live, as well as, she and her son. As we prepare to celebrate the churches 22nd year of service, we look back to thank those who have given to sustain the ministry. Our guest during our Pre-Church Anniversary Service will be Dr. A.D. Iverson and the Paradise Baptist Church. This service will be held Sunday, Oct. 4rd at 4:00 P.M. What is the connection between Paradise and “The Lift”? I am glad you asked. Almost 20 years ago when “The Lift” was struggling to get it’s people from point A to point B. Pastor Shigg had a yellow station wagon that he would make several trips to get our people to different fellowships. He noticed that Mt. Zion had a 15 passenger van on it’s parking lot, but he didn’t know Dr. E. V Hill at the time, but Pastor Shigg knew Dr. A. D. Iverson. He asked Dr.

PASTOR A.D. IVERSON

Iverson to introduce him to Dr. Hill, so that he (Pastor Shigg) could talk to Dr. Hill about donating that van to “The Lift.” Dr. Iverson said Paradise was in the process of getting a new van and he (Dr. Iverson) and Paradise would donate the old van to “The Lift” and that’s just what they did. Because of that van, “The Lift” was able to gain recognition throughout the city because Pastor Shigg and a van full of men would pop up at different services. The Lift” has been rolling every since because after Paradise, thEn Pastor LaGrand and New Hope donated a van and then Pastor Jones and Calvary donated a van. When you hear Pastor Shigg say, (God is Good, ) that is just what he means. He knows that for a FACT. Come and help celebrate during our PreChurch Anniversary, Sunday Oct. 4rd at 4:00 P.M. Our Theme: “The Lift,” Remembering God’s Blesses and Recognizing It Was God Who Brought Them Out Their Egypt.” Ex. 16:32; Our Church Anniversary is Sunday Oct. 25th at 4:00 P.M. here at 6501 Crenshaw Blvd. Come and see how God has blessed us through you, God’s people. Remember, “Love is everywhere.” but we are on the Southeast and Southwest corners of Crenshaw & Hyde Park in the city of Los Angeles. Rev. S. S. Shigg, Pastor/ Organizer, Sis. Kathy Lazenby, Reporting.

LOOKING FOR JESUS OCTOBER 4 -- BIBLE STUDY GUIDE 18 Bible Background • MARK 1:35-45 Printed Text • MARK 1:35-45 Devotional Reading • EZEKIEL 34:11-16 AIM for Change By the end of the lesson, we will: KNOW why Jesus was sought constantly by people in Galilee, FIND comfort in knowing that we can turn to Christ when we are in need, and DETERMINE to turn to Jesus in our time of need. Keep in Mind: "And when they had found him [Jesus], they said unto him, All men seek for thee" (Mark 1:37). Focal Verses: KJV Mark 1:35 And in the morning, rising up a great while before day, he went out, and departed into a solitary place, and there prayed. 36 And Simon and they that were with him followed after him. 37 And when they had found him, they said unto him, All men seek for thee. 38 And he said unto them, Let us go into the next towns, that I may preach there also: for therefore came I forth. IN FOCUS Upon visiting her chemotherapist, Laura received the bad news that the cancer had metastasized to still another part of her body. Therefore, the medication was not working. However, the doctor reassured her that they were not giving up hope and she shouldn't either; her life was still in God's hands. Laura left the doctor's office in a contemplative mood. She went home and sat quietly on her chair. It was on that big, old, stuffed chair that she met the Lord daily in studying the Bible, meditating on His Word, and in prayer. This day was no different. Laura prayed, "Lord, I need You to be my Leader in this health challenge. I need You to do for me what the doctors cannot do. I know that healing is in the touch of Your hand." In today's lesson, we learn that like Laura, many people in Galilee realized that Jesus had the words of life and a healing touch, and they sought Him. They came to know Him as "Jehovah Rapha—The Lord our Healer." Even though some people are not physically healed on this side of heaven, if it is God's will, He can speak the words of life and healing in your situation as well. The People, Places, and Times Disease. Disease and sickness have plagued people since God threw Adam and Eve out of the Garden of Eden (Genesis 3:23). Ancient Hebrews believed that illness was caused by sin in the individual, which required God's punishment (12:17; Proverbs 23:29-32), or was due to the sin of a person's parents (2 Samuel 12:14) or seduction by Satan (Matthew 9:34; Luke 13:16). Scripture shows that there is not always a simple explanation for disease (Job 34:19-20). Leper. In Jesus' day, people afflicted with leprosy, a chronic and extremely contagious disease, were considered to be "untouchables" or "outcasts." This disease is characterized by noticeable changes in the skin and damage to peripheral nerves and mucous membrances. Those unfortunate enough to be afflicted with leprosy experienced loss of sensation to touch, loss of skin pigment, and a paralysis of the face, legs, or hands. They also experienced other losses: relationships with family, friends, and community. They were in desperate need of healing or they would remain outcasts. Background John Mark wrote the gospel of Mark. According to the several church fathers, Mark was a close associate of the apostle Peter and "transmitted to us in writing what had been preached by Peter" (The Zondervan Pictorial Bible Dictionary, 510). He was not one of the 12 disciples, but he accompanied the apostle Paul on his first missionary journey (Acts 13:13). He wrote to the Christians in Rome to present three things about Christ: His person, His work, and His teachings. He wanted them to know that Jesus Christ alone is the Son of the Living God. He showed in his Gospel how Jesus demonstrated His divinity by overcoming many things: diseases, demons, and even death. Mark also showed how Jesus obeyed His Father and chose to die for sinful humanity on a cruel cross. The Gospel of Mark is the shortest of the four Gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John) and truly shows Jesus in action. It gives Christians a clear picture of God's love and compassion for suffering and hurting people. Mark shows how an all-powerful God not only has power over sickness, but demonic influences as well. His love and compassion are for anyone and everyone who seeks after Him. IN DEPTH 1. Jesus Christ: A Real Leader in Connecting to the Father (Mark 1:35-39) Jesus is the epitome of a compassionate person. In today's text, we see the Good Shepherd at work and at His best. For instance, after preaching in the synagogue Jesus and His three companions James, John, and Peter, went to Peter's house to eat and rest. When the group arrived, they found Peter's motherin-law in bed with a fever. Jesus healed her. However, early the next morning before daybreak, Jesus got up, left the house and found a secluded place to pray. He knew that in doing ministry, it is paramount that the minister stay connected to the Source: God the Father. So that ministers do not become totally depleted (ministry can do that), they need to go back to the Source to receive empowerment from the Vine. Jesus, in His humanity, went to the Father. Peter and the other disciples later followed Him, that is, they searched until they found Him. When they finally found Him, they told Jesus that everyone was looking for Him. Jesus had healed many sick people the previous night, but He had not healed all of them. So, many people had waited all night anticipating their healing in the morning. To their dismay, they found that Jesus had gone. In essence, Jesus told the disciples that it was time to move on to other towns because preaching the Gospel was the primary reason for His coming. 2. Jesus Christ: A Real Leader in Compassion (vv. 40-45) Jesus Christ, God's one and only Son, is a true example of one who loves unconditionally. In one town where Jesus was preaching, a leper approached and pleaded with Jesus for help. Leprosy is a horrible skin disease. Levitical law demanded that anyone stricken with the dreaded disease be quarantined from the rest of society. The victims of leprosy were considered unclean. This meant that lepers could not participate in any

39 And he preached in their synagogues throughout all Galilee, and cast out devils. 40 And there came a leper to him, beseeching him, and kneeling down to him, and saying unto him, If thou wilt, thou canst make me clean. 41 And Jesus, moved with compassion, put forth his hand, and touched him, and saith unto him, I will; be thou clean. 42 And as soon as he had spoken, immediately the leprosy departed from him, and he was cleansed. 43 And he straitly charged him, and forthwith sent him away; 44 And saith unto him, See thou say nothing to any man: but go thy way, shew thyself to the priest, and offer for thy cleansing those things which Moses commanded, for a testimony unto them. 45 But he went out, and began to publish it much, and to blaze abroad the matter, insomuch that Jesus could no more openly enter into the city, but was without in desert places: and they came to him from every quarter. religious or social activity. The law declared that any person who came into contact with an unclean person was considered unclean themselves (Leviticus 5:2-3). Therefore, lepers were required to keep a safe distance from healthy people. Whenever they approached anyone, they were to call out "Unclean!" to alert people to their presence. However, sensing no revulsion from the Lord, the leper continued until he was kneeling right in front of Jesus. He cried out, "If you are willing, you can make me clean" (Mark 1:40). And even though the leper was considered an outcast because of his contagious disease, Jesus was "moved with compassion" (v. 41). He reached out and touched the man in a spontaneous gesture of divine love. He met the man at the man's point of need. Jesus did not care what the society thought or did not think. This man was cut off from living a productive life within the community. He was cut off from family and friends. He needed a Saviour. He needed someone who could look past his faults and see his needs—look past his social status and see his condition and have compassion—look past his disease and see his humanity crying out. Jesus was that Someone. In fact, Jesus took the time to listen attentively to the man and touch him. Oh, the touch of the Master's hand; that touch can make a difference— that touch can restore! As Christians, we have the responsibility to follow the Master's lead. He is our Leader. He shows us how to love people unconditionally. He shows us that as we minister, we are not to be a respecters of any persons, even to those whose views might oppose ours. Jesus healed all kinds of people who needed and sought His help. By Levitical law, touching this diseased man meant that Jesus, Himself, was now also considered unclean. However, the divine power of Christ nullified any possible contamination and resulted in a cure. "'I am willing,' he said. 'Be clean!'" (v. 41, NIV) Since lepers are considered unclean, the words used to indicate the healing are "Be clean." At this point, Jesus was trying to avoid these crowds because having multitudes flocking to Him for healing would have hindered His preaching. So He sternly charged the man not to tell anyone of his healing. He instructed the man to follow the teaching of the law and present himself to a priest to be declared officially clean (v. 44; Leviticus 14:1-32). However, the man went out and freely spread the news of his healing. And just as Jesus had known, the people of the town flocked to Him. It became so bad that Jesus could not enter the town during the day, but had to remain outside the city in isolated places (Mark 1:45). Jesus is still here to help us solve our problems. He is here to first help us solve our sin problem—our need of a Saviour. Then, He is here to deliver and restore us. In a sense, all of us were lepers at one time. We were deformed by sin and unclean. However, no person is too disgusting for the Master's touch. The people of Galilee realized that Jesus had the words of life and a healing touch. Do we realize that today? If we do, we should also go looking for Him. If we have already found Him, then we should help some lost soul find Him, too. MORE LIGHT ON TEXT Mark 1:35-45 Introduction: During the three and a half years of Jesus' ministry, He did some powerful miracles to prove to people that He was indeed the Son of the Living God—the longawaited Messiah. In today's text, we find Jesus interacting with people in teaching and healing, inviting them to live in covenant with God. According to Mark, as our Lord began the pursuit of His goal on earth, "Jesus came into Galilee, preach-ing…The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: repent ye, and believe the gospel" (1:14-15). In other words, He came preaching the Good News of Salvation. He came telling them of God's kingdom that will reign forever and ever and that they could be a part of it if they believe on the Lord Jesus Christ. Jesus came to make known that entry into God's realm was possible by turning from self and sin and trusting God's announcement through Jesus. Mark recorded examples of how Jesus showed that participation in God's dominion did not merely involve accepting a set of beliefs, but trusting Jesus enough to live by those beliefs. 35. And in the morning, rising up a great while before day, he went out, and departed into a solitary place, and there prayed. 36. And Simon and they that were with him followed after him. 37. And when they had found him, they said unto him, All men seek for thee. Jesus paid a heavy price in caring for the problems of so many needy people. Therefore Jesus, being fully God and fully human, prayed to the Father for strength to do His ministry. Prayer was never a minor add-on in Jesus' life or something He did in order to enhance His reputation as a religious leader. Instead, all four Gospel writers recorded incidents that reveal how much prayer was a priority for Jesus (Matthew 26:39, 42; Luke 9:18). He rose early, before others, or when everyone else was gone, to make time for prayer (Mark 6:46; Luke 5:16; 6:12). Three times He prayed before His arrest and crucifixion. The first and last words He spoke while dying on the cross were prayers. The priority Jesus gave prayer illustrates the place it should have in the lives of His followers. Just as prayer gave Jesus strength to focus on His goal rather than chasing public attention or frittering away His limited life on minor issues, it can do the same for us. Although Mark frequently used the word "immediately" (Gk. euthus, yoo-THOOS) in his gospel, in these verses

he seemed more concerned with emphasizing Jesus' commitment to prayer. Jesus, the Messiah, knew that commitment to prayer was paramount and not an appendix or something to rush. He knew that He needed to take time—make time for the Father—to be in the presence of the Father. Prayer, then, was the key for keeping His faith in His Father strong, following His Father's will, and overcoming Satan's power. In Jesus' open invitation to covenant living, He is also inviting all believers to make prayer a priority in our own lives. We, as Christians, should never allow ourselves to believe we have arrived spiritually (Philippians 3:12; 1 Corinthians 10:12). Neither should we fool ourselves into thinking that we are following Jesus if all we want is to get what He can do for us. Are we following Him for the fishes and loaves? Will we still follow Him if He does not answer our prayer in the manner that we thought He should? That is what some half-hearted followers did after He miraculously fed 5,000 people with a few pieces of bread and a couple of fish. We need to also ask ourselves, "In our covenant relationship with our God, are we guilty of half-hearted service to Him as well?" 38. And he said unto them, Let us go into the next towns, that I may preach there also: for therefore came I forth. 39. And he preached in their synagogues throughout all Galilee, and cast out devils. Even though many people were looking for Jesus so that they could be healed, too, He told His disciples that they were moving on. The disciples, who came to escort Jesus back to Capernaum, where people were looking for Him, were probably surprised when He gave them the news. They may have wondered why Jesus would choose to leave a bustling town on a major trade route and go to little villages. Although the King James Version called them "towns" (v. 38), Mark used a word that combined the words "town" and "village" (Gk. komopolis, ko-MOP-ol-is). Places like that were scattered all over the province of Galilee; they had market days so that farmers in the area could sell their produce to local people, and thus were popular hubs. It is obvious from today's text that Jesus' desired to share God's message throughout the land. This showed that He was not just concerned that only the wealthy, the influential, or the religious heard His message from God. He came for whosoever would believe on Him: the rich, the poor, the healthy, the unhealthy, people of every race, gender, nationality, etc. When the King James Version says, "…therefore came I forth," today He might say, "That's what I'm here for." Jesus' statement to His disciples should remind believers today that every person needs to hear God's Word whether they live downtown, in the suburbs, or out in the country, whether they live in their own homes, in crowded apartments, in abandoned buildings, or out on the street. Therefore, leaving Capernaum and going to those villages made plain that He wanted everyone to hear the Good News—everyone who was looking for Jesus. In all those little places, Jesus taught and healed in their synagogues just as He had in the big city of Capernaum. Everywhere He went He found people with the same spiritual, emotional, and physical needs. Everywhere He went, He found that people needed a Saviour. He was and is that Saviour. 40. And there came a leper to him, beseeching him, and kneeling down to him, and saying unto him, If thou wilt, thou canst make me clean. 41. And Jesus, moved with compassion, put forth his hand, and touched him, and saith unto him, I will; be thou clean. 42. And as soon as he had spoken, immediately the leprosy departed from him, and he was cleansed. The text does not tell us the name of the village. That was not important to the story. What was important is that there was a man who needed the touch of Jesus. Therefore, this man with leprosy approached Jesus. Unless touched by the Master's hand, leprosy was highly contagious and incurable. Contracting the disease made the victim a living corpse, suffering a slow death sentence. It cut a person off from other people (Leviticus 13:46). In Jesus' day, a leper was even forbidden from entering the temple, participating in worship, or bringing sacrifices there. Desperation ruled the day in this poor, hurting man's life. He realized that Jesus had the words of life and the healing touch that he sought. However when he approached Jesus, his actions violated the quarantine of the Mosaic Law, which commanded that lepers keep away from other people. Instead, he came to Jesus (almost certainly not in a synagogue), knelt before Him, and begged Him to consider healing him. The leper let nothing keep Him from his Saviour, the One who had healing power in just His touch or the powerful words He spoke. Even though the rabbis said healing leprosy was as hard as raising the dead, the leper's request expressed faith that Jesus could heal him; still, he realized that Jesus might not be willing to. The phrase, "If thou wilt" (Gk. thelo, THEL-o) meant "if you will" but could also mean "if you wish to" or "if you want to" which is how the New Living Translation interprets it. To rabbis of that time, leprosy was deserved punishment for the sin of slander, which was breaking the ninth commandment. Even so, Jesus, being One who could forgive sin, looked past the leper's faults and saw his needs. The man's condition aroused pity and caring in Jesus; it aroused His compassion. Consequently in response to the leper's request, Jesus did what would have been unthinkable to most people at that time. He touched the leper and said, "I will; be thou clean" (Mark 1:41). Jesus—Jehovah Rapha (the Lord who heals us)— not only restored the man physically but also spiritually. Jesus' compassion for hurting people prompted many of the miracles that He performed. The suffering of individuals stirred His compassion, as did the sinful, self-destructive attitude of society (Matthew 9:36; Mark 6:34). 43. And he straitly charged him, and forthwith sent him away; 44. And saith unto him, See thou say nothing to any man: but go thy way, shew thyself to the priest, and offer for thy cleansing those things which Moses commanded, for a testimony unto them. After Jesus healed the man's leprosy, He immediately gave him orders about how to behave. He told him to show himself to a priest and do all that was required by the Mosaic Law (Leviticus 14:1-32). That involved three sacrifices—two of them using birds, and a third, three sheep. As the animals were killed, their blood was to be dabbed on the person's right ear lobe, thumb, and big toe. The cured leper was supposed to shave his entire body, even his eyebrows. There was more, but the point was that if the man's faith in Jesus was genuine and since the Old Testament regulations were still in effect, he would obey. Jesus' command not only illustrated the burdensome nature of the Mosaic Law, but also the diligent determination that shows true faith in Jesus. Jesus did not ignore its regulations in the least nor did He encourage others to do so. The principle here still applies today—if a person genuinely trusts Jesus, that person

will obey Him (John 14:15). Being healed of leprosy made a new life possible for the man. When a person asks for and accepts the forgiveness from sin provided by Jesus' crucifixion, that person is born again spiritually. That opens for the person a new life socially in the church, intellectually in Bible study, and spiritually in prayer (2 Corinthians 5:17, NIV). In return, that person should worship God in the beauty of holiness and obedience. When Jesus sent the healed man away to have a priest confirm his restored health, verse 43 says Jesus "straitly charged him" (Gk. embrimaomai, embrim-AH-om-ahee). The New Living Bible translates the verse "Jesus sent him away…with a strong warning" and that Jesus "told him [the leper] sternly." Mark used a word that implies anger, displeasure, or irritation. Maybe Jesus sensed that the man wasn't going to obey Him. What Jesus says in the following verse reinforces His concern because He instructs the man not to talk to anybody, but go directly to find a priest and follow the instructions from the book of Leviticus. Also, the final phrase in the verse indicates the quickness Jesus wanted from the man. "Forthwith" in modern English means "at once." The literal meaning of "sent" (Gk. ekballo, ek-BAL-lo) is "to throw out." Jesus sent the man off to fulfill the Law's demands as soon as He healed him. From this account of the leper, we also see useful guidelines for any person today to express his or her faith in obedience (Romans 1:5; 16:26). In other words, Jesus told the leper, "Do not loiter, waste time, or hang around: Go and do this right now!" However, remember that he was to go to the priest and not spread his good news to everyone (Mark 1:44). 45. But he went out, and began to publish it much, and to blaze abroad the matter, insomuch that Jesus could no more openly enter into the city, but was without in desert places: and they came to him from every quarter. Needless to say, the man was so overjoyed that he could not keep the healing to himself; he did not do as Jesus instructed him. Instead, he went all over the place (Gk. polis, POW-lis) fervently telling people how Jesus had healed him of leprosy. Because of the man's disobedience, Jesus could no longer go into any town to teach and preach; crowds were pursuing Him for what He could do for them. Soon He had to go outside the towns into open fields. When Jesus tried to get away with His disciples to rest and renew their strength to do further ministry, thousands of people chased after Him. Remarkably, Jesus did not get angry at these circumstances. Instead, when He saw the huge mob that had followed and found Him, Mark 6:34 tells us that "…he had compassion on them…So he began teaching them many things." Indeed, Jesus' ministry extended into all of Galilee because of people's recognition of His teaching and healing.

WAYNE ANTHONY.... set Wayne miles apart from other talented singers. First, he knows “who” he is singing about, and he knows Gospel music, its history, and the importance of its role in Black churches. Secondly, Wayne Anthony has recorded with some of the notable Gospel greats, such as Rev, James Cleveland, and far too many others to mention. He is able to share his gift of song freely with others, and prayerfully accepts their praise and comments regarding his efforts, and always gives God the glory. While singing under the direction of the Holy Spirit, there is seldom a need to improve or change anything he does. Thirdly, he takes every opportunity to share his singing with others, and he listens to a variety of Gospel singers so he can expand his repertoire. Hymns, anthems, contemporary…you name it, and he can sing it, and sing it well! There is no doubt in any ones mind that Wayne Anthony is an anointed, spiritual Gospel singer that will bless you to the depths of your very soul. To add to the flavor of the service, several guest choirs such as Praise City Mass Choir, New Philadelphia Mass Choir, and GMWA (Los Angeles Chapter), under the leadership of Sister Rodena Preston will render music. If you want to be blessed, and feel a touch of heaven, and journey there for a spell, join us October 10, 2009 at 5:00 p.m., for “AN EVENING WITH WAYNE ANTHONY IN CONCERT.” Wayne is currently serving under the leadership of Rev. Eugene O. Bryant, at New Philadelphia M.B.C., in Los Angeles. To God be the glory! Dr. J. Benjamin Hardwick, Senior Pastor, Sister Clarice Holmes, Reporter

Love God

When I love God, I cannot help but to examine His worth, I should find it easy to express what He means to me, and that in turn prompts a boasting about who He is and what He has done. This boasting and declaring cannot be done closed mouth, but it’s vocal. This is called worship. Psalm 99:5, “ Exalt ye the LORD our God, and worship at his

It is good that we don’t know exactly when Christ will return. If we knew the precise date, we might be tempted to be lazy in our work for Christ. Worse yet, we might plan to keep sinning and then turn to God right at the end.

Heaven is not our only goal, we have work to do here. We must keep on doing it until death or until we see the unmistakable return of our Savior. Christ’s second coming will be swift and sudden. There will be nor opportunity for afterthought, last minute repentance, or bargaining. The choice we have already made will determine our destiny. Jesus’ purpose in telling about the return is not to stimulate predictions and calculations, about the date but to warn us to be prepared. Will you be ready? The only safety is to obey him today. Jesus asks us to spend the waiting time taking care of his

people and doing his work here on earth, both within the church and out side. This is the best way to prepare for Christ’s return. Knowing that Christ’s return will be sudden should motivate us always to be prepared. We are not to live irresponsibly-sitting and waiting, doing nothing, seeking self-service pleasure, using his tarring as an excuse not to do God’s work of building His Kingdom, developing a false security based on precise calculations of events, or letting our curiosity about the end times divert us from doing God’s work. “Work while it is day, the night cometh when no man can work.”

footstool; for He is holy. Also, a sign of my devotion to God is my obedience. My devotion and my belief is exhibited through what I do, 1 John 2: 5 says, “But whoso keepeth his word, in him verily is the love of God perfected.” Loving God prompts me to obey and do the things that He wants me to do, and it also prompts me also, to hold others accountable for what they do for Him. Live His mission We see God’s mission purpose demonstrated through His son, John 3: 16-17, “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that world through him might be saved.” Our

GOOD NEWS FROM ...... GREATER NEW UNITY B.C. Greetings to you, in the precious and holy name of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior, who is STILL the King of Kings and Lord of Lords!! What a great day to be alive, and to be able to once again see the changing of the seasons. God is good, God is great, and He is INDEED WORTHY OF ALL THE PRAISE, GLORY AND HONOR!! We enjoyed a blessed Lord’s Day this past Sunday, as we hope you did as well! The Voices of Unity ministered to us in songs of praises and brought us a song, a “blast from the past”! They sang “CHANGE”, and the Lord used Sis. Paula in a mighty way! Afterward, Pastor Allison brought forth the word and delivered it under the power of the Holy Ghost! We were so blessed to welcome four new members into the family after the preaching of the Gospel! To God be the glory, and welcome to the family! Our Youth Church simultaneously occurred, and their subject, taken from Galatians 5:2223 was “Fruit of the Spirit”. To God be the Glory, and we continue to pray for our YOUTH, each and

every day. Won’t you join us in a word of prayer for our youth, each and every day at 12, 3 and 6 pm? According to James, the prayers of the righteous availeth much! On October 3, 2009 the Men’s Ministry will once again present their spectacular “Men’s Style and Debonair”, which is an elegant afternoon Fashion Affair and Luncheon. It was one of the best events of the year last year, and it is sure to be a repeat success! Please support the men in their endeavor; see any of the Men of Greater New Unity for your reservation, or you may contact Bro. Randy Allison Sr, at the church at (323) 757-5094 for further information. We especially want to invite all of our friends and family of Greater New Unity! Don’t miss it, and don’t forget your cameras to take photos of the very handsomely dressed Men of Greater New Unity, as well as guests of Greater New Unity, such as Bro. Billy Brown, Bro. Jerry Rising, and guest narrator, Pastor Herman Johnson, to name a few.

Don’t miss out, get your reservation today!! Greater New Unity is a FORWARD CHURCH, serving a FORWARD GOD!! We continue to pray for all who are sick and shut in; low in spirit, those who are serving our country in the Armed Forces; those who are incarcerated or institutionalized, and those who simply say, “pray for me”. We miss you very much, Mother Marlowe, Sis. Hobson, Sis. Reid, Mother Frances Davison, Rev. and Sis. Choyce, and everyone who is on the Sick List, we lift you up to the Lord. God can do anything but fail... Greater New Unity is a family church and we are everpresently located at 9719 S. Avalon Blvd, “where the power lines of the city meet the power of God, where everybody is SOMEBODY and Christ is the CENTER of all” . Serving in a more excellent way, under the power of the Holy Ghost is our Pastor, Rev. Randy Allison Jr, and reporting is yours truly, Sis. Arlene Andrews. Until next week, don’t forget to KEEP RAISING THE PRAISE!!

ONE FAITH FELLOWSHIP’S NUGGETS FOR THE SOUL

“Really, Who Are You” Which adjectives would people use to describe you? Are you known to be kind, loving, gentle and caring? Or known as being selfish, rude, mean, or unkind? Which adjectives are your objectives to be known as? Well, what we do, how we are, and how we respond dictates really the true essence of one’s self. J. K .Rowling says “It is our choices...that show what we truly are, far more than our abilities”. If we would describe our own self; it would in some cases be more flowery than it should be and in other cases we would not give ourselves the credit we really deserve. Proverbs 22:1-KJ- A [good] name [is] rather to be chosen than great riches, [and] loving favour rather than silver and gold. NLT-Choose a good reputation over great riches, for being held in high esteem is better than having silver or gold. It takes effort, work and time to establish a good name (to be well spoken of, referenced in a positive manner as one who is respected and beloved). We should be more careful to do those things which will obtain and maintain a good name rather than those things which will only increase in having great riches. Having a good name is attached

to walking in favor with God and man. Having a good name opens “Doors of Opportunity”. Having a good name confirms our objectives. This is why we must strive to maintain it and know that when we jeopardize losing it; it will likely never be in the same positive light as before. It should be said of us as it was of Christ in Luke 2:52 that He grew in favor with God and man. So how do we obtain a “good name”? Prayerfully being hearers and doers of God’s Holy Word; for it does reveal life-principles for relationship with God and man; both of when obedience is performed and also the results of not being obedient. Therefore we must yield ourselves to the help and power which Daddy-God offers to assist us in establishing a good name. Purpose to do good deeds for others! Purpose to be a blessing and demonstrate the nature of your Heavenly Father! Purpose not to be self-centered; for “NO” the world does not revolve around any one person. If you don’t have a positive image, begin now doing the above and it will establish you from this point. Think of 3 things you will do right now to begin the journey! If you have a positive image, strive to continue doing what you did to

radiates from within. She has a warm smile, kind eyes, and a patient understanding spirit. Whenever Mrs. Hardwick is present, there is a sense of calmness, and an air of complete serenity all about her. We appreciate her because of the love and concern she shows while taking wonderful care of our Pastor. Although she does not do the work of the Pastor, she readily accepts the fact that they are a team yoked together to do God’s work. There is a perfect spiritual balance between husband and wife with the goal of bringing glory to God in all things. She is a valuable asset to our church, and an inspiration to women every where by her lady-like composure and stature. She careful never to force herself into the spot-light., but is very capable of rising to any occasion when necessary. “A man of God who is not ashamed of the gospel of Jesus Christ” (Romans 1:16,17) is the theme chosen to honor Pastor David L. Morgan and First Lady Stella L. Morgan for eight faithful years of committed service to the Gideon Family and the South Central Los Angeles Community.

M.B.C. as our special guests. Our guest list does not end there. Herein, we extend a personal invitation to the reader to experience this worship hour and be encouraged by the powerful life-changing Word of God. Pastor Lee will deliver the inspirational message, and you don’t want to miss the oratorical skills and profound insight of this man of God. This event will be held at the New Jerusalem M.B.C. at 4720 South Western Avenue on Sunday, October 4, 2009 beginning at 3:30 p.m. Parking is sparse, so arrive early for a selected parking space. purposeful and sincere study of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Additionally, it is an “irrevocable mindset” as noted in Pastor Morgan’s daily walk and interaction with people he meets wherever he goes. It doesn’t matter the circumstance, the purpose, or the motivation; Pastor Morgan boldly lifts the name of Jesus the Christ in character and in vocal utterance. He is committed to the purpose for which he was he called-”to tell everybody about somebody who can save anybody.” To share in this commemorative event, we’ve invited Pastor Alton Lee and Congregation of the New Greater Peace M.B.C., and Minister Charles Hall and the my Hope

full of God’s commands, but did you realize it is also full of God’s promises too. When He gives a command, He is telling us something “we must do”; and when He makes a promise, He is telling us something “He will do”. For more than 54 years Pastor Hardwick has stood on a strong foundation of God’s promises while fulfilling God’s command of the “Great Commission”, and has carried the Good News of the Gospel of Jesus Christ to all nations, and in return God has fulfilled His promises to Dr. & Mrs. J. Benjamin Hardwick by showering them with an abundance of blessings, while keeping His hand of favor working in their lives. Pastor Hardwick knows that God’s promises are not like those promises of mankind. God does not break His promises. He is true to His word. Due to unforeseen circumstances and situations beyond our control changes may occur which cause man to break his promises. However Pastor knows there is one person who never breaks His promises. Throughout his life, especially in his ministry, God has walked with him, kept all His promises, and has yet to fail him. Pastor will testify without any hesitation that it pays to serve Jesus each and every step of the way, and if you are careful to obey His commands, God will keep His promises, and bring them into fruition in your life. Pastor has often said, “The smartest thing a person can do is to trust in the Lord with all their heart, and believe whatever God says!” It is a blessing that we have a Pastor who stands on all the promises that God has made, and we can witness how God works in his life. In Proverbs, God says, “He who finds a good wife, finds a good thing.” So Pastor did just that. Nothing could be said that is more befitting in describing our First Lady, Mrs. Thelma Hardwick. Pastor Hardwick found for himself, a priceless beauty who is humble, and gracious in every way possible. While she is extraordinarily pleasing to the eye, her true beauty
