"As Jesus passed forth from thence, he saw a man named Matthew, setting at the receipt of custom: and he saith unto him, Follow me. And he arose, and followed him."—Matthew 9:9.

In love and memory of the widow Ms. Reed, I speak to those that continue to grieve Psalms: 23 was her favorite scripture to read. She encouraged many to love God and to believe. She was a virtuous woman and by GOD she was taught. A devote Christian, Believer, Saint a true Warrior and Soldier that fought. Never let the enemy see her sweat, she whip the devil with the Bible using every verse in the text. Psalms 19:14 was a scripture she picked apart, it reads “let the Words of my mouth and

the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight O Lord my strength and my redeemer.” You, saw the presence of the Lord upon her, every time you saw her. She looked to the hills from which came her help. Every time she was touch by GOD she cried tears of joy and she wept. Ms. Reed was a Prophetess, anointed, appointed fasting, praying, seeking the Lord’s face to stay up on it. She spoke of visions and dreams that would come to pass. Her last assignment was a fourth day fast. Hattie could

adapt and minister to people from all walks of life, no respect of person, we were all of GOD’s children in her sight. Saint Home was the name of the church she would attend. She would remove herself if the people would pretend. Mighty women of God, as little waddle in her walk pleading the blood of Jesus Christ, halleluiah praising and shabak, shabak. Sunday after church she was easy to trace, when she had a taste for Harold and Belle’s which was her favorite place, no need for the menu. She kept her order simple salad, bread, liver and onions, clam chowder and a large vase of Shirley Temple. This made her smile, I remember her dimples.

Hattie was a wealth of wisdom and intelligence, women with poise and a spirit of elegances. Her conversation was season with grace and if it wasn’t about GOD it was irrelevant Her living was not in vain and her history is the evidence. She lived long enough to see Obama our Black President. Bandren was the place of resident but now she is with the King of Kings with a greater inheritance. Love yea one another was her final quote! Love GOD WITH ALL OF YOUR HEART cause He’s our only hope!!!! July 8, 1927 was her date of birth and on August 26, 2009 on Wednesday Night she departed from this earth. Written by: Mc. TESTAMONIE.

(Supporting Scripture Romans 10:14-15.) Pastor Criss & 1st Lady Minister Criss are both living examples of unmoveable, faithful, God sent Messengers, who have been empowered by God. In good times and bad, they have continued to fight the good fight of faith. It is evident, through faith, they have had the ability to perservere against all Satanic devices to destroy the work of God, nonetheless they still prevail. Pastor Criss has been stedfast, instant in season and out of season preaching the uncompromising gospel. Also a great asset to the church is our 1st Lady, Minister Tanya Criss. We salute them both

MATTHEW 28:19 - “Go Ye Therefore and Teach...”

BEGGING TO GET IN Bible Background • MARK 7:24-30 Printed Text • MARK 7:24-30 Devotional Reading • II CORINTHIANS 8:17 AIM for Change By the end of the lesson, we will: DESCRIBE how Jesus rewarded the woman for her persistent faith, FEEL confident that strong faith can help in trying circumstances, and SHARE with others a time when we needed strong faith and how God worked in our lives. Keep in Mind: "The woman was a Greek, a Syrophenician by nation; and she besought him that he would cast forth the devil out of her daughter" (Mark 7:26). Focal Verses: KJV Mark 7:24 And from thence he arose, and went into the borders of Tyre and Sidon, and entered into an house, and would have IN FOCUS Children instinctively turn to their parents when they have a need, whether it is to get a bandage for a scraped knee, money for a toy, or a feeling of security. Adults, too, have needs, many of which are not met so simply. Fortunately, Christians have the privilege of being able to turn to Jesus for help in meeting their needs. Perhaps the most profound need that each of us has is for our broken lives to be touched by the healing hand of our Lord. Evidence of our brokenness is all around us. We see it in failed marriages, estranged families, and bitter church members. In addition, each day the local news media witness our brokenness with reports of murders, suicides, drug addiction, prostitution, alcoholism, and other problems. Unfortunately, we live in a sinful world and none of us is able to escape its brokenness; none of us is able to avoid the necessity for healing and restoration. At some time, we all need mercy. In today's lesson, we will learn how Jesus compassionately reached out to a Gentile to restore her daughter's physical health. Today, He is just as willing to reach out to both Jews and Gentiles, males and females, rich and poor to heal and restore us in body, mind, and spirit if we would only ask. No one is locked out of His reach. No one has to beg to experience His salvation. All we have to do is ask, and He will give mercy. The People, Places, and Times Phoenicia. The territory of Phoenicia was next to Galilee and about 200 miles northwest of Capernaum. The Syrophoenician woman is referred to as such because Phoenicia belonged to the province of Syria. This was Gentile territory. The textual reference to her being a Greek really means that she either spoke Greek or was Hellenistic in culture. She was probably not a Greek by nationality, but Hamitic. As far as we know, the journey of Jesus and His disciples into Phoenicia was the only time He set foot outside the borders of Israel during His ministry. Jesus' journey into Gentile territory showed that He was not bound by the scribal concept of defilement (Mark 7:20). In addition, His ministry to a Gentile anticipated the future breaking down of the barriers that separate Jew and Gentile (see Acts 10:28-11:3). Background Jesus and His disciples frequently had to escape from the crowds to get rest and to recuperate from the demands of public life. However, they were not always successful. During periods of ministry in the wilderness and in the district of Genneseret, Jesus and His disciples had tried twice, unsuccessfully, to get away from the crowds (see Mark 6:31, 53-56). People always managed to search them out and cut short their rest. It was in search of solitude that Jesus and the disciples ventured north to Tyre in the district of Phoenicia. This territory lay outside of Israel's boundaries. There, Jesus hoped they would not be known and would be able to get much needed rest. However, a Syrophoenician found out Jesus was in town. She had heard of the wondrous works He had done for others and she approached our Saviour, asking Him to cure her demon-possessed daughter. In the encounter between this Gentile woman and Jesus, we see that our Lord's compassion and responsiveness know no boundaries of race, gender, or geography. IN DEPTH 1. A Desperate Woman Begs to Get In (Mark 7:24-28) The Syrophoenician woman was so desperate for her child's healing that she would not be deterred. Regardless of what the disciples or anyone else said or did not say, her determination was to pursue Jesus and to secure from Him what she needed. Therefore, the woman begged Jesus to cast out the demon from her daughter. She begged Jesus for mercy. But Jesus' initial response made it sound as though He was not going to help the woman. The phrase, "Let the children first be filled" (v. 27) refers to the priority of the Jews in the preaching of the kingdom of God (see Romans 1:16). Though it appeared that Jesus was reluctant to help, the real purpose behind His lukewarm response might have been to test the woman's faith in Him. There were many so-called "miracle workers" around in those days and some people thought Jesus was one of them. But Jesus was not a magic man. Did the woman think He was another miracle worker, or did she really believe in Him and what He could do? Though Jesus' initial response did not sound promising, the woman's faith and persistence drove her to take the statement of Jesus and press it to

OCTOBER 18-- BIBLE STUDY GUIDE 20 no man know it: but he could not be hid. 25 For a certain woman, whose young daughter had an unclean spirit, heard of him, and came and fell at his feet: 26 The woman was a Greek, a Syrophenician by nation; and she besought him that he would cast forth the devil out of her daughter. 27 But Jesus said unto her, Let the children first be filled: for it is not meet to take the children's bread, and to cast it unto the dogs. 28 And she answered and said unto him, Yes, Lord: yet the dogs under the table eat of the children's crumbs. 29 And he said unto her, For this saying go thy way; the devil is gone out of thy daughter. 30 And when she was come to her house, she found the devil gone out, and her daughter laid upon the bed. her advantage (Mark 7:28). In response, Jesus told the woman to go with the assurance that the demon had been cast out of her daughter. This story illustrates some very important principles. This woman was so desperate that even begging was not beneath her. Although she had to beg, she was more than willing to do so if it would get her child healed. Sometimes in life, we have to be as tenacious as the Syrophoenician woman. We must realize that there is real spiritual warfare going on in this world, and many times we as believers have to fight through— press our way—with fasting and prayer to get our healing, deliverance, or restoration. Faith and tenacity win the day. In fact, according to Matthew 17:19-21, when the disciples could not drive a devil out of a man's son, after Jesus did so they asked Him, "Why could not we cast him out? And Jesus said unto them, Because of your unbelief: for verily I say unto you, If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you. Howbeit this kind goeth not out but by prayer and fasting." Many saints can testify that they have persevered in prayer and fasting, not only for their own healing and deliverance, but they have interceded for children, loved ones, and others. Just as the Syrophoenician woman did, they were willing to beg to get into the hands of Jesus. They, too, were willing to beg for mercy. 2. A Desperate Woman Receives Mercy from the Master (vv. 29-30) Jesus saw the faith and persistence of the Syrophoenician woman and told her to go with the assurance that the demon had been cast out of her daughter. The faith and persistence of this woman can be an inspiration to us today. Persistence with faith can mean the difference between achieving or failing to achieve our spiritual goals. Whether it is starting and maintaining a daily devotional period or asking God to help us overcome some besetting sin, God will reward our faith and persistence if we determine in our hearts not to give up—if we keep asking for mercy. Another important principle that Jesus demonstrated is compassion and love for those who are hurting. We, too, need to demonstrate compassion and love to those who are wounded, whether physically or emotionally. Often, just a loving touch can be healing to those who are damaged and feel hopeless—to those who are begging to experience the flow of God's love and healing and do not know how. MORE LIGHT ON TEXT Mark 5:1-13, 18-20 Mark 7:24-30 24. And from thence he arose, and went into the borders of Tyre and Sidon, and entered into an house, and would have no man know it: but he could not be hid. The phrase "from thence" in the Greek is ekeithen (ek-I-then), meaning "from that place." Most likely for the purpose of rest, Jesus left Israel. He went to the Gentile (non-Jewish) region of Tyre (Gk. Turos, TOOros) and Sidon (Gk. Sidonios, sid-O-nee-os). Tyre was a metropolitan center about 35 miles northwest of Galilee on the Phoenician coast of the Mediterranean Sea. Sidon, a city of great wealth, was less than 20 miles north of Tyre. Despite remaining within the borders of the district away from the cities' centers, Jesus was still unable to escape notice due likely to previous contact with people from Tyre and Sidon. 25. For a certain woman, whose young daughter had an unclean spirit, heard of him, and came and fell at his feet: 26. The woman was a Greek, a Syrophenician by nation; and she besought him that he would cast forth the devil out of her daughter. The woman's name is not given. What we do learn about her from this text which is quite significant is that she is a Syrophoenician (Gk. Surophoinissa, soorof-OY-nis-sah), which means she is a Gentile (nonJew) and her ethnicity is half-Phoenician and half-Syrian. What makes this encounter significant is that Jesus' meeting with her comes on the heels of His comments about what actually makes a person unclean or unacceptable for God (Mark 7:14-23; Matthew 15:1-20). The word "unclean" in the Greek is akathartos (akATH-ar-tos), and it means "ceremonially, abstaining from, according to Levitical law." Mark 7:14-23 records Him noting that it is the evil of our heart or our sinfulness that makes us unclean, not our nationality or our culture. Will Jesus' encounter with this woman uphold that truth? As a Gentile, she would have been considered unclean by virtue of her race and culture, and thus unacceptable before God apart from becoming a proselyte (convert) to Judaism. Thus, how Jesus handles the woman has profound implications as it relates to whom the blessing of relationship with God is open.

The need she brings to Jesus is, of course, one that is causing her great pain and anguish of heart. Her daughter is demon-possessed. The Syrophoenician woman has heard that Jesus is in the region, so she brings this concern before Him, having heard of Him and His ability to heal. She falls at Jesus' feet in what William Lane sees as "a mark of deep respect as well as profound grief," and she begs Him to heal her daughter (Lane, 261). 27. But Jesus said unto her, Let the children first be filled: for it is not meet to take the children's bread, and to cast it unto the dogs. Even if you soften Jesus' response and point out that the word He used for dogs was generally used for household pets and not street dogs, it is still challenging. Most commentators interpret Jesus' words from a theological standpoint. William Lane notes, "It seems appropriate to interpret Jesus' statement on the background provided by the Old Testament and later Judaism, where the people of Israel are designated as the children of God" (Lane, 261-263). The word "bread" in the Greek is artos (AR-tos), means "food of any kind." Understood in this light, Jesus acknowledges the privileges of Israel as God's specially chosen people and affirms that the time has not yet come for blessing to be extended to the Gentiles. By distinguishing between the claims of children versus those of household pets, Jesus prioritizes Israel's standing versus that of the Gentiles in terms of His ministry. So, it is possible to view Jesus' words to the woman with a pragmatic lens. In addition, if we look at Matthew's version of the encounter, we see that Jesus asserts, "I was sent only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel" (Matthew 15:24). The woman would not have needed a complete Old Testament background to understand the priority inherent in Jesus' statements in Matthew 15:24 or Mark 7:27. His words must have been challenging to the woman and may seem very harsh to us, until we realize that Jesus intended the statement as a test of the woman's faith. After all, Jesus had never turned anyone down who had a need, even when He was tired. Yet, the question is one of faith. Who is Jesus to this woman? Does she see Him as just another miracle worker or something more? 28. And she answered and said unto him, Yes, Lord: yet the dogs under the table eat of the children's crumbs. She addresses Jesus as Lord. This is the only place in Mark's gospel where Jesus is addressed as Lord and it is from the mouth of a Gentile (non-Jew). She recognizes that Jesus is more than just a miracle worker. He is Lord. What is more, He is, to her, Lord for "the little dogs" and as much a part of the household (that is, the kingdom of God) as the children are. Notice how she turns Jesus' statement to her advantage. She says in essence, "Yes, Jesus, You are right. But even dogs eat the crumbs that children drop during the meal, which means little dogs don't have to wait until children get through eating to be fed. They can eat at the same time." In other words, she and her daughter can enjoy the blessings of Jesus' ministry right away, even before those blessings are fully extended to the Gentiles—even before the Gentiles are fully invited to the table, she and her daughter can enjoy the crumbs. What a statement of faith! 29. And he said unto her, For this saying go thy way; the devil is gone out of thy daughter. 30 And when she was come to her house, she found the devil gone out, and her daughter laid upon the bed. The phrase "the devil" in Greek is daimonion (daheeMON-ee-on), meaning "evil spirits, messengers, and ministers of the devil." Jesus commended this woman's incredible faith and delivered her daughter from demonic possession. Doing so no doubt brought a smile to Jesus' face. Lane writes, "Her interpretation of his statement bore eloquent witness both to her humility and her simple trust in his power to confront the demonic when all human help fails" (Lane, 263). Her response of faith was met by Jesus' grace in healing her daughter. She had called Him Lord and indeed He was, for without speaking a word and without having to touch her daughter, He healed her condition. The woman returned home to find that it was as Jesus said: her daughter was well. The Syrophoenician woman begged to have a chance for her daughter to share in God's blessings, and her faith got her daughter in. Search the Scriptures 1. To what geographic location did Jesus and the disciples retreat (Mark 7:24)? 2. How is the mother of the demon-possessed girl described (v. 26)? 3. What kind of faith did this mother have (vv. 2829)? Discuss the Meaning What motivated the Syrophoenician woman to face possible rejection in approaching Jesus? What should we do if after praying and fasting, our resolution does not immediately come? Lesson in Our Society In our society, people with physical disabilities are often greeted with stares, treated with pity, or related to as though they are children. Yet the physically challenged have the same needs that we do: they need to be loved and respected, and to use their capabilities to the fullest. What might individual Christians and churches do to improve relationships with the physically challenged? Make It Happen Many of us who are involved in ministry—clergy and laypersons—work with people like ourselves: the same race, economic class, and lifestyle. Yet ideally, our ministry should not be bound by walls of separation (see Galatians 3:28). As we see in today's lesson, when Jesus healed the Syrophoenician woman's daughter, He was engaging in cross-cultural ministry. Consider opportunities that might be available or created to implement cross-cultural ministry.

Sunday was a day of praise and thanksgiving, and in Youth Church, we wrapped up a month long study of the Fruit of the Spirit, taken from Galatians 5:22-23. Are you displaying the “FRUIT of the SPIRIT”, Monday through Saturday? We can see them on Sunday, but our challenge is to allow the Holy Spirit produce that fruit that we can display on a daily basis; that it will become part of our character and daily walk. ONE FAITH FELLOWSHIP’S NUGGETS FOR THE SOUL

“FIGHT , FIGHT , FIGHT” Nehemiah 4:14—KJ- And I looked, and rose up, and said unto the nobles, and to the rulers, and to the rest of the people, Be not ye afraid of them: remember the Lord, [which is] great and terrible, and fight for your brethren, your sons, and your daughters, your wives, and your houses. Fight, Fight, Fight! Yes, we are fighting whichever enemies that have risen up and will rise up to speak negatively and to hinder what the Word of God says about our families, friends and certainly about ourselves. Naturally and understandably –so, Nehemiah and the people were faced with opposition from enemies while they were attempting to build the Walls of the City which would enhance and protect them from the enemies. We must be willing to stand in the gap and fight for our love ones until they are able to fight for themselves. We must fight for their well-being: spiritual, emotional, physical and financial wholeness as though the fight is for our very own selves. We must be concern about them becoming the people whom Daddy-God desires and created them to be. To be effective Intercessors in the fight for our spouses, children, other family members and anything else which concerns us; we must remember the instructions of our verse in Nehemiah. 1) Be not ye afraid of them—We can’t be afraid of the Devil or any other challenges with faces them. We must know that greater is He that is in us than he that is in the world

(1 John 4:4). We must know Romans 8:31b- If God [be] for us, who [can be] against us? 2) Remember the Lord, [which is] great and terrible—-We must remember the power, grace and love which Daddy-God has displayed in the past to us and to those we love. We must remember how Daddy-God has rescued us from past enemies. We must remember how He has opened doors which were closed to us and closed needed doors in our lives. We must remember how Daddy-God has brought us out before and how He continuously watches and cares for us now. We must remember Jeremiah 33:3- Call unto me, and I will answer thee, and shew thee great and mighty things, which thou knowest not. 3) Fight for your brethren, your sons, and your daughters, your wives, and your houses. We are not told to play with the Devil and the enemies or to speak to them, or to beg them—the devil is a liar~~~ We are told to fight!—Why fight? Because we can overtake our enemies! 1 Samuel 30:8- And David enquired at the LORD, saying, Shall I pursue after this troop? Shall I overtake them? And he answered him, Pursue: for thou shalt surely overtake [them], and without fail recover [all]. While we don’t know for how long the fight will be; through faith we can fight knowing that the victory is ours! We can fight knowing that we will surely overtake the enemies and without fail recover all! So, Fight, Fight, and Fight! Fight with your prayers; fight with your love; by

The overarching goal of conflict resolution: 1. Move from familiar confidence in manipulation 2. Be careful not to turn expectations into demands 3. Develop confidence in mutual ministry: •Recognize when real needs are satisfied in Christ •Recognize when needs do not develop into expectations or demands There must be bridge building, and part of bridge building involves listening. Listening means attending, stepping out of me into you. There must be identifying of joint issues, and underlying concerns must be addressed. We also must help others to listen, by asking questions like, “what did you hear me say?” Do you know what feeling is going on with me? Would you like to know? What do you think I’m asking you to do? Be aware of body language. Example: lean towards the person

who is speaking, shifting from position to concern. Be willing to demonstrate willingness to working together, generate mutual steps: 1. Brainstorm mutual “win-win” solutions. 2. Address the concerns of both parties. 3. Choose one solution, document expectations and expected results, commit to implementing it for a specific test period. 4. During and after the test period, mutually address any new issues or unexpected results that the solution caused. 5. After the test period, bring closure to the conflict by clarifying and summarizing the final mutual action plan. Work towards mutual agreements, making mutual agreements means being totally honest. Things that can lead to detours in the planning process:

1. Staying with original position refusing to work on mutual solutions. 2. Addressing the concerns of only one side 3. No clear commitment to the plan from both parties 4. Action plan is vague or ambiguous 5. No checking for loose ends 6. No final closure. Conflict will happen, but being prepared to handle conflict from a gospel perspective can lead to developing a culture of peace, and that should be our ultimate goal, through Christ Jesus.
