PASTOR La VELLE M. GATES

Greetings in the name of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ who now and forever has all power in His Hands! We the members of the Faith In God and Hope Community Church, under the leadership of our pastor, the Reverend La Velle M. Gates, proudly invite each of you to attend Hope Community Church’s 86 th and the Faith In God’s 28 th Annual Church Anniversary, TODAY, at both the 11:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. worship services.

REV. PAUL JONES PASTOR EMERITUS

This is a very unique celebration as both churches were organized on the Fourth Sunday in October. The Hope Community Church was organized in October 1923 and the Faith In God Baptist Church in October 1981. The Anniversary theme is “Churches Coming Together as One” (I Corinthians 12:12-14). Both services will highlight historical and divine events that united the efforts of both ministries.

The celebration would also include honoring the accomplishments and legacy of the Reverend Paul Jones as he is the Organizer and Pastor Emeritus of the Faith In God Baptist Church. The 11:00 a.m. worship will be held at the Hope Community Church located at 344 West Florence Avenue, Los Angeles, California 90003. Pastor Gates will be bringing the message. The 4:00 p.m. worship service will be held at the Faith In God Baptist Church located at 315 West Florence Avenue, Los Angeles, California 90003. Bishop Miquail Broadus and the Grace Temple Baptist Church will be our guest. Bishop Broadus will be bringing the message. For more information you may call (323) 751-2305. Sis. BIG HAPPENINGS: GOD’S KEEPERS OF HUMANITY CELEBRA TES 4TH YEAR CELEBRATES PAST OR & WIFE APPRECIA TION ASTOR APPRECIATION

REV. GEORGE W. CRISS PASTOR

We bring to you “BIG HAPPENINGS” with warm greetings in the name of Christ, as we mark yet another milestone honoring our Pastor, Reverend George W. Criss & 1st Lady, Minister Tanya Criss in the 4th Year Pastor & Wife Appreciation Services. We invite

you to come share a part in the services on any of the following dates: Oct. 11th, Oct. 18th & Oct. 25 th at 3:30 p.m. THEME: A Pastor Sent by God to Empower the People. (Supporting Scripture Romans 10:14-15.) Pastor Criss & 1st Lady Minister Criss are both living examples of unmoveable, faithful, God sent Messengers, who have been empowered by God. In good times and bad, they have continued to fight the good fight of faith. It is evident, through faith, they have had the ability to perservere against all Satanic devices to destroy the work of God, nonetheless they still prevail. Pastor Criss has been stedfast, instant in season and out of season preaching the uncompromising gospel. Also a great asset to the church is our 1st Lady, Minister Tanya Criss. We salute them both

for their monumental efforts to courageously encourage those who are down-trodden and providing hope to the needy. The Appreciation Services will take place at God’s Keepers of Humanity Baptist Church, 5428 S. Brodway in the City of Los Angeles. Special Guests include: (Oct. 11th) New Pleasant Grove Pastor W. H. Charles Jr.; Angelic Institutional Christian Fellowship Church - Pastor James Lockhart; Mt. BROADCAST YOUR MINISTRY

IN STORES NOW!! With the release of her new album, Taking It Back (Living Water Records/Thank You Entertainment/Fontana/Universal on Tuesday, September 29, 2009, Songwriter/Recording Artist, Nicole “Faithful” Franklin is brought the Word to audiences worldwide. With her exuberance, charisma and positive energy, she delivers God’s message to Contemporary Gospel music fans as well as young hip-hop crowds. God has been a constant throughout Nicole’s life, and her strong faith has seen her through good and bad times. Today, filled with the Holy Spirit, she lives to share the glory and blessings that God has granted her. Taking It Back features 12 original hip-hop and praiseand-worship songs that Nicole wrote and co-produced. She recently spoke about her goals for the album, her musical influences, and what being a Christian means to her. What was your vision for this album when you entered the studio, and how do you feel you accomplished that vision? NF: My vision for this album was to capture the heart of the King, His love, His message, His words and sounds that He had given me, and just try my best to deliver that in every song. Who are some of your favorite Gospel artists, past and present? NF: Oh my! I really like so many that if I start naming them … OK, you said “some.” CeCe Winans, Donnie McClurkin, Hezekiah Walker, P.O.D, Jeremy Camp, Rebecca St. James, Michael W. Smith, Switchfoot, Kierra “KiKi” Sheard, Donald Lawrence, Canton Jones, Lisa McClendon, Mary Mary — those are my girls, Da’ Truth, LeCrae, Lee Williams & The Spiritual QC’s, The Williams Brothers … I mean, I really like a lot of Gospel artists. I don’t have a favorite artist per se; they’re all so amazing … there are just a lot of really great Christian artists out there that I really, really like. There are so many facets to your career — your ministry, your music, your directorial work, your record label. How do you divide your time to make sure you give enough to each? NF: You know, it’s not easy. I really have long days that are jam-packed, but the work itself demands its time, so to tell you the truth, I just really try to divide my time with some good scheduling to make sure I give enough time to everything. What does being a Christian mean to you? Many people call themselves Christians, but their actions don’t reflect the teachings or the Word. NF: Being a Christian, to me, means being Christ-like, like the word Christian means. It means, to me, serving the Lord and loving the Lord with all your heart, mind, soul and strength. It means, to me, to be committed and sold out for Jesus and not compromise. I think too many people compromise their walk. If you say you’re a Christian, you should be just that: Christ-like. It’s not easy, it’s a sacrifice, but Jesus sacrificed it all for us. I think too many people who say they’re a Christian compromise their walk by doing some of the very things Christ wouldn’t do, which leads to confusion, especially for those who are non-Christians and are on the outside looking in. They’re watching and thinking, Christian? You’re no different than me. That kind of inconsistency makes for confusion, and we know that God is not the author of confusion. As a believer, I think we have to be more responsible with the message that we send out. As believers, we are called to be set apart from the world, as the Bible teaches us, but I think that there are way too many Christians that want to stay apart. We are called to be separated, set apart to be Christ-like. God said in 1 Peter 1:16, “Be ye holy for I am holy.” Being a Christian means, to me, being Christ-like, and doing your best to try and rep God Almighty and His son Jesus Christ. How do you get that message across to young people effectively and in a way they can relate to? NF: By representing it, teaching them, telling them, living it and trying my best to represent Jesus Christ. Young people are not so interested in what you say as much as what you do about what you say. Young people are looking to see the Jesus you talk about lived in your life, so I try to get that message across to young people by trying to rep what I believe being a Christian means to me in my daily walk. What is one of the most important things you have learned over the course yourinformation, career? Forofmore please visit: NF: Onewww.nicolefaithfulfranklin.com of the most important things that I have learned is that only what you do for Christ will last.

See Page 8 A man was converted some years ago, and he was brimful of praise. He was living in the light all the time. He used to preface everything he said in the meeting with "Praise God!" One night he came to the meeting with his finger all bound up. He had cut it, and cut it badly, too. Well, I wondered how he would praise God for this; but he got up and said—"I have cut my finger; but, praise God, I didn't cut it off!" If things go against you, just remember they might be a good deal worse.

MATTHEW 28:19 - “Go Ye Therefore and Teach...”

A HOLY PEOPLE Bible Background • 1 PETER 1 Printed Text • 1 PETER 1:13-25 Devotional Reading • DEUTERONOMY 7:6-11 AIM for Change By the end of the lesson, we will: DISCUSS Peter's description of "holiness," REFLECT on feelings of personal accountability to God and obligation to others, and IDENTIFY at least one sin in your life that needs to be confessed to God and forsaken. Do it. Keep in Mind: "But as he which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation; because it is written, Be ye holy; for I am holy" (1 Peter 1:15-16). Focal verses: KJV 1 Peter 1:13 Wherefore gird up the loins of your mind, be sober, and hope to the end for the grace that is to be brought unto you at the revelation of Jesus Christ; 14 As obedient children, not fashioning yourselves according to the former lusts in your ignorance: 15 But as he which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation; 16 Because it is written, Be ye holy; for I am holy. 17 And if ye call on the Father, who without

The grass withereth, and the flower thereof falleth away: 25 But the word of the Lord endureth for ever. And this is the word which by the gospel is preached unto you.

IN FOCUS After not seeing each other for a few years, one day Monica ran into her friend Brenda and was amazed to hear about how much she had grown in the Lord. "I remember a few years ago, you weren't interested in going to church, Bible study, or listening to Christian programs," remarked Monica. "Well, that's all changed now," said Brenda. "The Lord has done great things in my life and I don't mind letting everyone know." "Just what has the Lord done for you?" asked Monica. "God gave me a new outlook on life. He saved me from a sure tragedy and has blessed me financially, spiritually, and emotionally," replied Brenda. "I'm motivated to live a holy life for Him, set apart from sin, and I give the Lord all the glory." Sometimes we need to be reminded of benefits that come with serving the Lord. As we remind ourselves of what the Lord has done for us in the past, what He is presently doing for us, and what He promises to do in the future, it should inspire us to want to follow Christ's example and walk (live) in holiness as He did. Holiness is not just for pastors, ministers, deacons, or missionaries. It is a standard requirement for Christians. As we think of blessings that God has bestowed on us, we should be motivated to live holy lives before our God. This week, the apostle Peter exhorts the saints in Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia, and us as well to live holy lives before the Lord (1 Peter 1:1). Brenda, in our story, learned to do so. We, too, should imitate Christ and walk in holiness. Our lives should be a positive witness for Him. The People, Places, and Times Peter. He was also known as "Cephas," which is translated from the Aramaic word kepha and means "rock." Peter was the Galilean fisherman who, along with his brother Andrew, was chosen to be one of Jesus' 12 disciples. Peter's given name was "Simon" and his father's name was Jonah (Matthew 16:17; John 1:42). The family probably lived at Capernaum on the north shore of the Sea of Galilee (Mark 1:21, 29), although it is possible they lived in Bethsaida (John 1:44). Peter's wife accompanied him on his missionary travels (1 Corinthians 9:5). Peter is often described as the bold disciple who became one of Jesus' three closest associates, along with James and John. They accompanied Jesus during His most significant occasions—the raising of Jairus's daughter (Mark 5:35-42), the praying in Gethsemane (Matthew 26:36-46), and the Transfiguration (17:1-5). Peter answered Jesus' question, "Who do you say I am?" (16:15) with "Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God." Jesus called him "blessed" and said, "…thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church" (16:18). Peter had times of weakness. He told the Lord that he would never forsake Him, but when Jesus was inside being interrogated by Caiaphas and other religious leaders, Peter denied Him three times in the high priest's courtyard. Yet the disciple who denied Him became one of the strongest key leaders in the early church. Background The Apostle Peter wrote his epistle to believers residing in Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia. He wrote this letter to comfort believers who were experiencing great trials and persecutions because of their belief in the Lord Jesus Christ. As an apostle, Peter exhorts the church to stand strong during their season of tribulation and oppression. In spite of what they faced, the Lord was available to give them hope. He was available to help them live holy lives. Often, epistles were written to communicate ideas to a people. The Christians scattered throughout the known world of Peter's day were being persecuted and perhaps losing hope. In his letter, the apostle reminds the church of their hope in Christ Jesus. In spite of the torment, one day they would receive the end of their faith, the salvation of their souls (1 Peter 1:9). Now as we begin today's lesson, Peter encourages the believers to "gird up the loins of [their] mind" (v. 13). Don't allow carnal thoughts of hopelessness to overtake you, Peter urged. Get it together! IN DEPTH 1. A Call to Holiness (1 Peter 1:13-16) Peter's epistles could be described as letters of hope. As Christians undergo trials and tribulations, the apostle encourages us to remember what God has done for us in the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Sometimes Christians forget whom they are serving, and Peter writes to remind and encourage the body of Christ. He writes to give them a description of holiness so they can live and walk in it. Therefore, the apostle begins this section of his epistle by challenging believers to think seriously, trusting fully in the death, burial, and resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ (v. 13). Why? They needed their faith in order to be over-comers in their suffering. They needed to learn how to utilize their

faith in the battle. They needed their faith to see clearly because of the trials and tribulations they were experiencing. These early believers had tunnel vision. Therefore, Peter encourages them to have hope and remember what God has revealed to them. In addition, the apostle wants the saints to live as "children of obedience to God; do not conform yourselves to the evil desires that governed you in your former ignorance when you did not know the requirements of the Gospel" (1 Peter 1:14, AMP). In essence, Peter says, "You know better than to return to your old ways, when God has brought you out of darkness into His marvelous light." In other words, that same holy, powerful God who brought them out of darkness into His marvelous light would help them to live holy lives. These Christians were told to put aside the evil desires trying to overtake them, and let their conversation and lifestyle be holy (v. 15). Evidently, their speech and behavior were negative and not as people who had hope. Perhaps Peter had gotten the report that they were living in doubt, fear, and unbelief. Therefore, Peter quotes from Leviticus 11:44-45 and reminds the believers what the Scriptures state: "Be holy, for I am holy" (v. 16, NKJV). We need to speak and live like Jesus. When we are living as God commands, we are living as holy people. The Holy Spirit indwelling us will help us to do so. 2. Christ: God's Example of Holiness (vv. 1721) God judges everyone according to his or her works. He does not show partiality to anyone (Acts 10:34). Therefore, if we sow doubt, fear, and unbelief in our lives, we will reap the same. Peter reminds us that if we continue in our state of hopelessness, God can judge us according to our confessions. That's why it is important that we speak words of faith in our everyday living (1 Peter 1:17). We must not be double-minded (doubtful). Double-minded people are unstable in all of their ways (from James 1:5-8). Peter reminds the saints that they were not redeemed with perishable, temporal items like gold and silver which are here today and gone tomorrow. If that had happened, their hopelessness would be justified. But God paid the ultimate sacrifice, the precious blood of Jesus Christ. His blood was without blemish (1 Peter 1:19)—pure enough to bear the sins of the world and cover the blotches that separated us from God. Since the beginning of time, God had the plan of salvation. He manifested that plan at the Cross and in the lives of believers. Before the world was created, God knew that we would sin and fall short of His standards of excellence. But praises be to our God, Jesus was the Mediator between God and us, so that we might taste of the heavenly kingdom, both now and forevermore. God the Father raised up His Son Jesus from the dead and gave Him glory—beauty, power, and honor— a quality of God's character that emphasizes His greatness and authority. Because of the price that Jesus paid at the Cross, we the church have faith and hope in God (v. 21). Jesus Christ is the epitome of holiness and a perfect example for us to follow. 3. Love: A Mark of Holiness (vv. 22-23) Peter recognized that the saints had cleansed their souls by obeying the Holy Spirit and thus possessed an unconditional love for one another (v. 22). He wanted them to continue in this love with a pure, genuine, sincere, and earnest heart. Part of our responsibility as Christians is to be loving and kind to believers and unbelievers alike. In addition, we shouldn't have a casual love, but a heart that fervently loves others. So often, we want to only love and bless those who love and bless us. But God says, not so. We must fervently love everyone in spite of their faults and habits. This is Christlikeness. This is holy living. 4. God's Word: the Key to Holiness (vv. 2425) Peter reminds the saints that one day all flesh and blood will die. We are here for only a season. Human beings, in all their glory, riches, favor, and honor are just like the grass and flowers of the field—they will soon wither and die (v. 24). However, the Word of God is more powerful, more enduring, and surer than anything on earth. Peter affirms that no matter what we are going through, in spite of what the enemy may throw in our path, despite the human philosophies that may come our way, God's Word remains constant and sure through the shifting sands of time. This was the same Word that was preached to the believers in Peter's day, and the same Word that is sure today. Our Heavenly Father is love, and He is holy. He will bring us out of every situation victoriously. Because of the Word of God (the sword of the Spirit), His Spirit dwelling within us, and holy living, we will emerge with the strength, enduring power, and wisdom to defeat Satan's kingdom. Peter encourages us to face our trials and setbacks with a pure heart and holy lifestyle, knowing that He who has called us is holy. So, too, should we be holy. MORE LIGHT ON TEXT 1 Peter 1:13-25 13 Wherefore gird up the loins of your mind, be sober, and hope to the end for the grace that is to be brought unto you at the revelation of Jesus Christ;

The imperatives of Scripture are always grounded in the indicatives of Scripture. It is the same way with this passage. The great blessings that God has granted the believer in salvation recorded in verses 1-12 are the grounds for Peter's exhortations in verses 13-25. It is in light of the blessings described in verses 1-12 that believers are to "gird up" (Gk. anazonnumi, anad-ZONE-noo-mee) the loins of their minds, be sober and hope for the blessings that God will bring them at the return of Christ. To gird up is "to be alert and sober" (Gk. nepho, NAY-fo). It is a call to keep ourselves free from addictions, either physical or otherwise, that would keep us from being mentally vigilant. "Hope" (Gk. elpizo, el-PID-zo) is "confident expectation," a certainty that what God has promised is coming. Wayne Grudem paraphrases the verse, "First, gird up your minds—get ready to think on God's works and obey him at once. Then, while continuing to be spiritually alert, begin to expect eagerly and confidently that you will receive from God great blessings when Christ returns" (Grudem, 77). 14. As obedient children, not fashioning yourselves according to the former lusts in your ignorance: Peter exhorts believers to refrain from a life patterned after their former ignorance. Their former ignorance (Gk. agnoia, AG-noy-ah) of course is their ignorance of God. There was a time when they did not know God or His will, and they did whatever they desired. This can no longer be the pattern of their lives. As obedient children, they are to live in such a way that pleases God. Note the indicative that comes before the imperative in the verse. They are children of God. He brought them into His family, and that familial relationship calls for a new kind of life, lived apart from the evil passions of their former lifestyle. 15. But as he which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation; 16. Because it is written, Be ye holy; for I am holy. The word "but" (Gk. gar) here indicates a strong contrast. Believers are not to live a life patterned after their former evil passions. Instead they are to pattern their lives after the One who called them, God the Father, who is holy. Thus in every aspect of their lives, they are to seek to be holy as well. Peter Davids writes, "To be called by God, to be drawn near to him is to be called to 'imitate him' [Gk. kaleo kata theos, kal-EH-oh kat-AH THEH-os; called to act in the manner of God], for God cannot coexist in fellowship with one who has an evil lifestyle (1 John 1:6-7)." Believers are called to imitate God in His holiness by living lives marked by holiness in every sphere. Why? The Apostle Peter roots the answer in Scripture. God, who called the people of Israel to be His own special people, gave them this charge in Leviticus 19:2: "You shall be holy, for I the Lord your God am holy." The character of our lives is to be shaped by the character of our God. We are to be holy because He is holy. When we live as God's holy people we are living as God always intended humans to live. We are being truly human. 17. And if ye call on the Father, who without respect of persons judgeth according to every man's work, pass the time of your sojourning here in fear: Believers are children of God. But this familial relationship with God, while giving us a sense of belonging, should not cause us to be presumptuous. Our status as His children does not give us an excuse to live recklessly. Why? Because our God is not impartial. He judges us according to our works. Just because we are His children does not mean that He will overlook our disobedience. Though believers will not miss eternity because of their sin, we must certainly expect the Lord's discipline in this life when our behavior is contrary to His will. Thus, says Peter, we should "pass the time of [our] sojourning here in fear." Used here, "fear" (Gk. aphobos, af-OB-oce) is reverential awe, not terror. It is fear born of respect. God is the Judge of all the earth and our Father as well, and as such, should command our deepest respect. 18. Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold, from your vain conversation received by tradition from your fathers; 19. But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot: Deep respect for God should be coupled with a deep sense of gratitude and awe at the costliness of redemption. It was not silver and gold that redeemed Peter's readers from their past life of sin. God rescued them from the sinful traditions (Gk. patroparadotos, pat-rop-ar-AD-ot-os), "beliefs, values, and behavior" inherited from their ancestors, through the precious blood of Christ. They were redeemed by the blood of the Lamb. The imagery that Peter uses is from the Old Testament: God's deliverance of the people of Israel from Egypt required the sacrifice of a lamb without blemish. The people were commanded to place its blood on their doorposts in order that the death angel commanded to kill the firstborn throughout Egypt might pass over them (Exodus 12:6-11). Of course, this was a foreshadowing of the sacrifice of Christ for us, the One who gave His own blood that we might be delivered from eternal death. 20. Who verily was foreordained before the foundation of the world, but was manifest in these last times for you, 21. Who by him do believe in God, that raised him up from the dead, and gave him glory; that your faith and hope might be in God. Christ's sacrifice, His death, was no accident. Rather, events had already transpired and Christ was foreordained (Gk. proginosko, prog-in-OCEko) to be our Saviour (v. 20). God planned our redemption from the foundation of the world and carried it out in Christ. In the course of human history, Christ was revealed; He came into the world for our salvation. This was all the plan of God. And it is through Christ that believers' faith in God has been established. Through Christ, the One who redeemed them is now the object of their faith. And the foundation of their trust in Him is the truth that God raised up Jesus from the dead and seated Him at His right hand with all power and authority. How can they not trust Him, who redeemed them and who validated that redemption by raising Jesus from the dead and glorifying Him! Wayne Grudem writes, "The God whom Christians fear is also the God whom they trust for ever, the God who has planned and done for them only good from all eternity." 22. Seeing ye have purified your souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit unto unfeigned love of the brethren, see that ye love one another with a pure heart fervently: The first part of this verse expresses that Peter's readers were considered to be sincere believers. They were a people who had been purified (Gk. hagnizo, hag-NID-zo) by obeying the truth of the gospel, by responding to it in faith." The imagery of purification is from the Old Testament's ceremonial washings, which the priests and Levites serving in the temple were commanded to do. These washings made them ritually clean. Peter picks up the imagery here to denote the spiritual cleansing that occurred once these

believers put their trust in the Gospel, the Word of Truth. They were a people who had experienced the renewal of the Gospel, a fact manifested by their sincere love for fellow believers. Now they were encouraged to deepen that love for one another. This is what demonstrates that the renewing power of the Gospel is at work in our lives, our continued pursuit to love one another as God in Christ has loved us. 23. Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth for ever. 24. For all flesh is as grass, and all the glory of man as the flower of grass. The grass withereth, and the flower thereof falleth away: 25. But the word of the Lord endureth for ever. And this is the word which by the gospel is preached unto you. This call to sincere love for one another is grounded in the new life that God has given us through His incorruptible (Gk. aphthartos, AF-thartos) Word. The Word of God is unfailing. Indeed, God's Word cannot fail because God will not fail. He lives forever and so His Word abides forever. In verse 24, Peter draws the comparison between the fading glory of humankind and the Word of God. The glory of humankind is like the flower of the field. Its beauty and splendor are temporary. It lasts for but a moment. But the Word of God endures (Gk. menounge, men-OONgeh) forever. And that Word comes to us, brothers and sisters, through the Gospel. What confidence we should draw from this: the Word of God, on which our salvation is grounded and which we have believed, endures forever! Search the Scriptures 1. When they are feeling hopeless, what are the three things Peter tells Christians to do (1 Peter 1:13)? 2. At the revelation of Jesus our Lord, what is to be brought unto the saints (v. 13)? 3. According to Peter, what are former lusts (v. 14)? 4. What should be our lifestyle and conversation (v. 15)? 5. Why should we be holy (v. 16)? 6. With what were we redeemed (v. 19)? Discuss the Meaning 1. What does it mean to be "holy?" Why shouldn't we be partial to other human beings? Explain. 2. Is the church being persecuted today because of her beliefs? Why or why not? Lesson in Our Society Often, Christians lose sight of the fact that our daily living should be a positive witness for Christ. It is easy to get distracted by our daily tasks and forget that in every area of our lives we need to seek to be like Jesus. Our society includes those who do not know Him and, consciously or unconsciously, they watch Jesus in us. They watch to see the holiness in us. Therefore, we must make sure that we represent our Lord and Saviour well. Remember, God expects us to walk the walk of a child of God—a child of the King. God is calling for a holy people. Do you represent Him well? Make It Happen This week, evaluate your own life and determine if you are living a holy life. If you find areas where you are lacking or weak, pray and ask God to help you.

not inward toward ourselves, it is utterly unselfish. This love is not natural. It is possible on if God helps us set aside our own desires and instincts, so we can give love while expecting nothing in return. thus the closer we come to Christ, the more love we will show to others. God gives us spiritual gifts for life on earth in order to build up, serve, and strengthen fellow Christians. The spiritual gifts are for the church. In eternity, we will be made perfect and complete and will be in the presence of God. Let us love one another as God has loved us.

Conflict Management Case Study Part 1 of 4

Sylvia and Dorothy work together preparing the church bulletin, Sylvia has spent a lot of time and effort on the announcement from the Children’s Ministry about their upcoming summer camp, really going over and above with graphics etc., hoping this would really be a eye catcher for the parents in the congregation. Dorothy comes along while Sylvia is at lunch sees the layout and decides “all that really is not necessary,” changes the announcement, completes the bulletin, makes the copies, folds the bulletin and puts them in place for the ushers to distribute on Sunday morning. When Sylvia returns she finds the bulletins changed and completed, and she goes through a range of emotions from hurt, anger, frustration, and belittled. Dorothy is surprised by Sylvia’s reaction and is now sorry for what she has done. Dorothy apologizes and states she really had no idea how her actions would affect Sylvia and apologizes again for being hurtful and

offensive. Sylvia accepts the apology but begins a process over time of keeping Dorothy at a distance, and she wastes no time in letting others know how hurtful Dorothy had been to her, and now others in the body are talking about what Dorothy did. Creating a Conflict Resolution Strategy Conflict is going to happen in the body of Christ, and there will be hurt feelings along the way. While Sylvia was justified in being hurt, she was not justified in staying that state and bringing others into the conflict. Where in the beginning it was Dorothy who caused division or disunity in the body, now it is Sylvia causing conflict and division. The following way would have been the way to handle the conflict; unfortunately this is not how it was handled: The first step is to remind the two people at odds with each other, who they are in Christ and who they belong too. They must be reminded that the other person is not the enemy, but they are being used by the enemy (Satan) to cause war in the barracks. The next step is to be encouraged to get their focus back to where it belongs and to reconcile for the benefit of their

relationship with each other and for the benefit of the ministry. They must be encouraged to get their focus back on God and His desire for their lives and ministry. Each must realize for themselves that neither one is perfect, and misunderstandings will take place, but the key is to be forgiving of one another and allow God to be glorified through the situation. Both should have been reminded that as believers in the body of Christ we have rights, but we don’t have the right to be hurtful to one another. Although Dorothy headed up the ministry, she did not have the right to come along and disregard Sylvia’s work. And Sylvia even though she was justifiably hurt, did not have the right to withhold forgiveness and bring others into the conflict. REV. E WINFORD BELL LAUNCHES The Silver Lining of Hope Crusade BEHIND EVERY BLACK CLOUD OF CRIME, THERE IS A SILVER LINING OF HOPE THROUGH PRAYER. II Chronicles 7:14

Rev. E. Winford Bell, Sr. Pastor of Mt. Olive Second Baptist Church, located in the heart of Watts, CA has launched the Silver Lining of Hope Crusade which focuses on men and women of all faiths to spiritually and intelligently bring awareness to violence and crime in the community. The wave of violence & crime continues to plague the lives of all people, especially children, youth, and young adults in Los Angeles and the surrounding communities. This Crusade was birth in March, 2009 after his son was a victim of a drive-by shooting in

the front of their home, shot 9 times experiencing a minor injury to his hand. Rev. Bell’s son was not affiliated with any gang/violent behavior, yet the Lord’s hand protected his life. Immediately, Rev. Bell as a Sr. Pastor of a church which is directly located in a poverty and high crime designated area in Los Angeles, hearken to the leading of God to begin this crusade which is founded on men and women of all faiths, coming out of their pulpits and churches, into the community and addressing this critical issue which is literally taking the lives of so many. To date, over 45 pastors and their churches have joined this crusade to address the violence and crime (head on), and to ultimately save the lives of children, youth, and their families. Since the birthing of this crusade, numerous crimes/deaths associated

with these churches, families and communities have been reported. The entire community is welcome to attend the following meetings which are located at the Inglewood Police Community Center @ 6:00pm, 2901 W. Manchester Avenue (7th Avenue and Manchester). The remaining meetings for 2009 are as follows: October 23, 2009, November 6, 2009, December 4, 2009, last meeting held on December 9, 2009 @ 7:00pm, Pilgrim Baptist Church, 950 E. 45th Street, Los Angeles, CA 90011. Daddy-God is so very good to His children! This reminds me of when I was singing “God is a good God” and the Spirit of God spoke to my heart and said, no: God is a “Gooder than Good” God. Both God and we know that it is not “Proper English”; but let’s not fail to hear His message through the words that He is a “Gooder than Good” God. Good in comparison to Daddy-God is as the floor is the lowest part of the room. Daddy-God being “Gooder than Good” means that He is truly more than the loving Father that we know of and have experienced! The awesome experiences we have had of Him are only glimpses of God’s true essence! He desires to overshadow us with His being as reflected in Psalm 65:5-You faithfully answer our prayers with awesome deeds, O God our Savior; Psalm 66:5- Come and see what our God has done, what awesome miracles He does for His people and Isaiah 64:3- When You came down long ago, You did awesome things beyond our highest expectations. And oh, how the mountains quaked! This is why He constantly invites us to draw closer and closer (the more) to Him so that we can enjoy greater insights of Him being “Gooder

A Scotchman was once asked how many it took to convert him. "Two," he replied. "Two! How was that? didn't God do it all?" "The Almighty and myself converted me," he said. "I did all I could against it, and the Almighty did all He could for it, and He was victorious." D. L. Moody "It Took Two".

individual, their families and their communities. It is an opportunity, once every decade, to do something that will positively impact our lives for the next ten years. Census Firsts: For the first time in decennial census history GPS computers were used to help the Census Bureau more accurately and efficiently update their lists of addresses. This is important because in order to mail out the questionnaires, there needs to be a complete list of addresses where people live or could live. This information changes drastically over ten years as structures come down and new ones are built. Additionally, many families have been forced to find alternative housing, as financial difficulties have forced numerous foreclosures. For the first time everyone will receive the simple short form. The 2010 Census questionnaire will feature only 10 easy questions, such as: name, gender, age, race and ethnicity, etc. Questions NOT on the questionnaire: social security number, personal financial information, legal status, etc. This makes it easy for everyone to be counted. Fill it out and send it back. It will take only a few minutes, and you won’t even need a stamp! For the first time in 2010 tens of thousands of homes nationwide will receive a bilingual English/Spanish form in neighborhoods where it is determined there is a large Spanishspeaking population. This will speed up and simplify the process even further. Additionally, there will be forms available in Korean, Chinese, Russian, and Vietnamese, and inlanguage assistance in 59 other languages.

If You’re Not Counted in the 2010 Census – You’re Invisible Why the Census is Important We all need to participate in the C e n s u s The Constitution of the United States mandates that a count of the population of the be conducted every ten years. This count, or census, is conducted at the beginning of every decade, usually on April 1st. Our next Decennial Census is scheduled for April 1st, 2010. How does the Census Bureau accomplish this? Census operations are the largest non-war effort put forth by the Federal Government. It will take approximately 1.5 million temporary workers to complete this enormous task. All of the workers have to be hired, trained, given tools with which to complete their work (ie. computers, telephones, offices and supplies), and then after the Census process is complete, Decennial Census operations come to a close and the whole structure has to be dismantled. It begs the question, why do these workers want to be a part of the process? “Census workers are passionate about ouir work because we believe what we’re doing is important,” says Sandra Alvarado, Media Specialist with the Census Bureau. “Not to mention that 1.5 million people get to work and receive a paycheck which helps individual families who are struggling to get through these difficult times, and helps the economy at large.” Participation in the Census is everyone’s civic duty and responsibility. Furthermore, it is of vital importance to each

than Good”. If we would truly grasp the reality of Daddy-God being our “Gooder than Good” God, we would jump up, clap, shout, dance and praise the Lord! We would not trip, worry and act like it is not His good pleasure to give us the Kingdom! Our God is the awesome God and He reigns in Heaven and Earth! Equally great is that He yearns to reign in our lives! Lord please help us to see You as You desire for us to see You!!! To understand You as you desire for us to understand You and to experience You as You desire that we experience You!!! Thank you Lord that You are concerned about everything that concerns us! Thank you that You are concerned about our personal, financial, spiritual, emotional and physical needs! Thank you Lord that it is Your good pleasure to give us the Kingdom! Thank you Lord that through You we are more than conquerors and that we can do all things through Christ who strengthens us. Thank you Daddy-God for all of Your promises which includes that if we live accordingly to Your Word, we will enjoy a fore-taste of Heaven right here on earth and certainly forever more in Eternity! Thank you for desiring to help us even right now, with that situation that

The Census count provides the data that serves as the basis for the apportionment of the 435 members of the United States House of Representatives among the states. If we want our presence to count, and our voices to be heard it is important that we all be counted. That is how we and our interests can be properly represented in government. Every year more than $400 billion in government funds are distributed based on Census data. If one person fails to be counted they are costing their community a lot of necessary funds. Multiply that by the number of people in a family that doesn’t participate. Multiply that by ten years. That equals a huge and significant loss of available money that would be designated for education, transportation, emergency services, and everything else that families and communities will need for the next ten years. All personal information collected by the Census Bureau is protected by law and completely confidential. The Census Bureau does not share information with any other individual or agency. Violation of this law is punishable by up to $250,000.00 and 5 years in prison. The 2010 Census: It’s safe, it’s easy, it’s important.
