PASTOR ANTHONY SMITH JERICHO ASSEMBLY OF FAITH

What a privilege it is to come together to worship and praise God with this group of men celebrating 30 years of gospel singing. The Starlights consist of five young men: Bro. Gregory Botts, Ricky Botts, Deon Palm, Rodney Thompkins, all born and raised in the City of Compton graciously known as men of valor. They have shared in gospel music for many years taking their gifts and talents all over the world and country by the Word of God. They have shared the stage with many different artist from the gospel

and secular music field. Just to name a few Shirley Ceasar, Joe Ligon and The Mighty Clouds of Joy, Lee Williams and the QC’s, James Brown, Yolanda Adams and the Williams Brothers. Setting the record awarded the best male gospel group to perform at the House of Blues. But the most important mission they are spreading the Gospel of Jesus Christ all over the world. These young men have accepted the assignment that God has given them. The scripture says “It is He who saved us and chose us for His

Holy Work.” We are not saved by service but we are saved for service, and truly they have dedicated their ministry to the service of God. We want to give honor this day to the Starlights for they have paved the way for many other gospel singers. Being men of standards with their unique sound, maintaining a low profile not allowing notoriety to distract the, but being representatives lead by the Word of God. Rev. Robert Pipes, Pastor of the First Unity Missionary Baptist Church for 65 years, was called from Labor to reward, and went home to be with the Lord on the Lord’s Day, Sunday, October 25, 2009. Rev. Robert Pipes was born on June 10, 1916, in Gloster Mississippi. He brought his young family to California, and organized and built the First Unity Missionary Baptist Church in 1947. He lived his entire life in WATTS, and helped the community by building souls and building the Kingdom! He lived a very full life, dedicating it to the service of the Lord, the community and the First Unity Missionary Baptist Church. Rev. Pipes was a member of the Masons, The Baptist Ministers Conference, Police Clergy, and past President of the Baptist Ministers Alliance. Rev. Pipes was a Minister that was “hands

on”, and loved getting out into the community. He had a Mobile Ministry for many years, where he went out into the community, preaching and teaching, and spreading the Word of God. He was a Master Carpenter and skilled Mason. He loved his CHURCH and all church activities, He loved to sing and was a great singer; he loved the Dodgers, the Lakers, and Good food; he enjoyed driving back south to Missisippi and the Piney Wood College which he helped build; He was a great conversationalist and he shot a mean game of pool on occasion! He was “old school” and he definitely called a spade a spade! Rev. Pipes leaves to mourn his passing his loving and devoted wife, Mrs. Oletha Pipes; 7 children, Mrs. Ella Mae Andrews; Charles, Larry, Robert, and Jerry Pipes; Ms. Stacy Pipes, and Ruth Parker Nance; Daughter in Law, Mrs. Theresa Pipes; GrandchildrenJoanne Pipes, Arlene Andrews, Avis Powell, Anthony Pipes, Robert Russell Parker, Elijah Williamson, and Jaired Mason; Great Grandchildren- Leeah L. Pastor & Wife’s 10th Anniversary Celebration at Friendlywill M.B.C.

PASTOR & FIRST LADY REV. & MRS. CHEZ LISTER

Blessings and Honor, and Glory, they all belong to Him!!! Thank you Jesus, for blessing us. The Friendlywill family has set this time aside to recognize and honor our Pastor, Rev. Chez J. Lister Sr, for all that he does for the people of God. This year is even more special than years passed because we are celebrating Pastor Lister’s 40th Birthday (earlier this year) and now we celebrate his 10 th year as Our Pastor. Our theme for this anniversary is “Our

Pastor; Worthy Of Double Honour” I Timothy 5:17. We recognize that our Pastor is called by God, to do a work that has been ordered by God himself. Called to minister to the sick in spirit, weak at heart, feeble minded and lost. Called to encourage believers to hold on and called to be a living, visible example as he leads others to Christ. Pastor Lister is also chosen by God to lead the people of Friendlywill. He was chosen by God, from among many, for this

“little church on 68 th Street”. Chosen to be a missionary, to preach the gospel, each and every time he steps into that Holy Place, no matter if it is at home or away. Pastor Lister is committed and dedicated to doing the Lord and to the work of the Lord. He is a willing vessel and is always ready to serve the Lord. He is committed to the Family of Friendlywill, with only our best interest at heart. He is not working alone, for by his side is his praying wife, Sis. Tanja Lister. She is a steadfast, selfless woman of God. She’s always lifting others up in prayer, even when she is not well herself. They have four children; Ashtyn, Chez Jr., Aaron and Taurean. The entire family is actively involved in the church, from the Sr. Choir to the Usher Board and Sunday School too. Yes, Our Pastor and First Lady are a very special blessing to the family of Friendlywill, so we’ve come together to show Pastor Lister & First Lady Lister how much we love them. Special guests have been invited to share in this great event with us. On Sunday, November 8,

2009 at 3:30pm, our guest churches will be Mt. Chapel M.B.C., Pastor E.D. Plump (Speaker) and Manchester M.B.C., Pastor R.J. Ridgeway Sr. On Friday, November 13, 2009 at 7:30p.m. our guest churches will be Faithful St. Mark M.B.C., Pastor G.R. Adkins III (Speaker), Leap of Faith Community B.C., Pastors A. & R. MATTHEW 28:19 - “Go Ye Therefore and Teach...”

A CHOSEN PEOPLE Bible Background • 1 PETER 2:1-17 Printed Text • 1 PETER 2:1-10 Devotional Reading • DEUTERONOMY 10:10-15 AIM for Change By the end of the lesson, we will: DEFINE what it means to be "chosen" and the duties and obligations that come with it, REFLECT and rejoice on our connection to this "royal priesthood," and PROCLAIM to others God's amazing deeds. Keep in Mind: "But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light" (1 Peter 2:9). Focal verses: KJV 1 Peter 2:1 Wherefore laying aside all malice, and all guile, and hypocrisies, and envies, and all evil speakings, 2 As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby: 3 If so be ye have tasted that the Lord is gracious. 4 To whom coming, as unto a living stone, disallowed indeed of men, but chosen of God, IN FOCUS Kevin had it made! He had successfully completed a strenuous initiation process and was chosen to join the most popular fraternity at Morehouse College. Joining the fraternity meant that Kevin's lifestyle would change. He would have to give up much of his study time and spend less time with his girlfriend. But Kevin felt that the benefits of joining that fraternity, the connections he was making that helped him now and would help his career later, far outweighed the sacrifices. Kevin was delighted with all the benefits of his fraternity membership. He accepted the fact that fraternal activities would be a major part of his life for the next four years. Like Kevin, Christians are chosen to join the fraternity of God. And like Kevin, our induction into God's family requires a change in our lifestyle. We are initiated into God's family by the Holy Spirit. Within the family of God, a new pattern of life emerges that defines how Christians should live with God and one another. As "God's elect" (1 Peter 1:1-2), believers are the recipients of God's grace. We were predestined according to God's plan. This divine choice was exercised according to God's foreknowledge (v. 2). God decided before creation that Jesus would redeem the church with His blood (vv. 19-20). God chose us to be His people and to be holy and blameless in His sight. In today's lesson, Peter explains what it means to be God's chosen people. The People, Places, and Times Election. Peter addresses his readers as strangers (1:1) and the elect (1:2). They are "strangers" because they were alienated from the world and suffered the rejection meted out to all "strangers." But they are also God's "elect." He has chosen them to be a part of "a chosen people, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a people belonging to God" (1:9). In the Old and New Testaments, election is the divine choosing of a person or nation, either to salvation and eternal life or to a special office or work. The first clear instance of election is in connection with Abraham, although the account of God's call to him to go to Canaan does not specifically state this. One finds an explanation given later in Israel's history (Deuteronomy 7:6f.; Nehemiah 9:7). By virtue of God's election of the fathers, Israel became God's elect nation (Deuteronomy 4:37; 10:15; 14:2). For this reason, God, after He delivered them out of Egypt, entered into a covenant relationship with the people as a whole at Mount Sinai (Leviticus 26:46). The New Testament concept of election is centered on the covenant of which Christ is the head. He is the elect of God (Luke 23:35; 1 Peter 2:4, 6). In the eternal covenant, He is the one chosen to redeem sinners as their representative. God bestows His love upon elect sinners because He sees them at all times in Christ, the Son, the elect's Redeemer. The elect of God are chosen not only for salvation, but also for service. They should have the assurance of their calling and election which gives confidence, strength, and a sense of responsibility (2 Peter 1:10f). This leads Christians to knowledge of their responsibility to serve God as Lord in this world. Background The passage before today's text (1 Peter 1:2225) explains how God's people are different from the ungodly. First, God's people are "purified" by obeying His truth (v. 22). Believers have undergone a change of heart that leads to a change in our behavior. We are no longer slaves to our desires, but willingly submit to God's truth. We have "unfeigned (sincere, heartfelt) love" for our brothers and sisters in Christ. Sincere love includes selfless giving. Our love for God and His will is directed outward in our love for one another. God's people have been "born again" (v. 23). Because of our new birth, we have become eternal creatures through the power of God's Word. We live according to His Word, which stands forever. When God's people live by God's Word, it changes our lifestyle. Today's passage explains how Christian lifestyles should be different from those who do not know God. IN DEPTH 1. A New Desire (1 Peter 2:1-3) As God's elect, God's people have certain responsibilities. God's people should lay aside "all malice, and all guile (craftiness, cunning), and hypocrisies, and envies, and all evil speakings" (v. 1). "Laying aside" means "getting rid of" or "putting away." Since we belong to Him, God fully expects a change in the behavior of His people. The lifestyle change involves ridding ourselves of negative qualities centered on selfishness. These negative qualities include: "malice," which is "evil" or "wickedness of character"; "guile," meaning "lying and deceitfulness"; "hypocrisies" or "playacting to impress others"; "envies" such as jealousy and covetousness; and "evil speaking," which is "backbiting and gossip." The point is, God's people are born anew and the sins of our old life must end. Instead of practicing sins that disrupt fellowship

NOVEMBER 1 -- BIBLE STUDY GUIDE 22 and precious, 5 Ye also, as lively stones, are built up a spiritual house, an holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ. 6 Wherefore also it is contained in the scripture, Behold, I lay in Sion a chief corner stone, elect, precious: and he that believeth on him shall not be confounded. 7 Unto you therefore which believe he is precious: but unto them which be disobedient, the stone which the builders disallowed, the same is made the head of the corner, 8 And a stone of stumbling, and a rock of offence, even to them which stumble at the word, being disobedient: whereunto also they were appointed. 9 But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light: 10 Which in time past were not a people, but are now the people of God: which had not obtained mercy, but now have obtained mercy. among God's people, believers should concentrate on things that contribute to our growth. How do we change our behavior? We change the things we desire. "As newborn babes, [we should] desire the sincere milk of the word" (v. 2). We are reborn children of God and as such, we should crave the purity of God's Word. Just as infants need regular feedings of milk, Christians need a regular diet of God's Word. God's people must not be satisfied with only a Sunday morning feeding; we need to be nourished daily! What would happen if a baby was only fed once a week? The baby would become ill and eventually die. In a spiritual sense, the same is true for God's people. Proper nourishment is critical for God's people, "that [we] may grow thereby." One sign of a vital growing relationship with God is an ever increasing hunger for His Word. Without the proper nourishment of God's Word, we become spiritually challenged. So we must be alert to any decline in our appetites for His truth. Some things that affect our spiritual appetites are wrong attitudes, the worries of life, the desire for wealth, and the pursuit of pleasure (Luke 8:14). God's people should want to grow in Him daily through reading and studying His Word. Our desire to mature in our relationship with God should be evident in our lives since we have "tasted that the Lord is good" (1 Peter 2:3, NIV). To taste something is to experience it. In other words, since we have experienced for ourselves God's graciousness and goodness, we should get rid of everything that hinders our spiritual growth. Because nature hates a void, everything we set aside must be replaced with something else. God's people fill the void with a healthy desire for God's Word to help us grow. Once believers realize our need for God's Word and begin to feed on it daily, our spiritual appetites will increase. Then we will start to mature. How's your appetite? 2. A Chief Corner Stone (vv. 4-8) The original readers of Peter's letter had been scorned and ostracized by their neighbors (1 Peter 1:1), and the apostle comforts them. He affirms them as members of a holy and glorious community. In Paul's letter to the Corinthians, he portrayed the Christian community as a body (1 Corinthians 12:1227). Peter uses the metaphor of "a spiritual house" to describe the church community (1 Peter 2:5). In this spiritually alive house, Christ is the "living stone" (v. 4), the "corner stone" (v. 6), and the "headstone" (v. 7). Our fellowship in God's community begins with our personal relationship with Christ. God's people come to Christ "as unto a living stone" (v. 4). Those who are not God's people have "disallowed" our living stone (vv. 4b, 7b). Although the ungodly reject Christ, He was chosen by God as our sure foundation. Through God's gracious outpouring of the Holy Spirit (Joel 2:28-29), we, too, have become "as lively stones... built up [as] a spiritual house" (1 Peter 2:5). Because God's Spirit lives within us, we are considered a holy priesthood and have a direct relationship with God. This direct relationship means that we can offer up spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God. Our spiritual sacrifices are our services to God and to others. Our service to God includes offering our bodies as instruments of God's righteousness, not conforming to the world and being obedient to God (Romans 12:1-2), being generous with our material wealth (Philippians 4:18), doing good deeds, and praying and praising God (Hebrews 13:15-16). God's people accept Christ as our "chief corner stone" (1 Peter 2:6), the foundation on which our faith is based. Peter draws this image from the prophet Isaiah: "Behold, I lay in Zion for a foundation a stone, a tried stone, a precious corner stone, a sure foundation" (Isaiah 28:16). The warning given in 1 Peter 2:8 about the chief cornerstone being a stumbling block to those who disobey is quoted from Isaiah 8:14. The Apostle Peter is saying, "We either obediently accept Christ as the Chief Corner stone or we reject Christ as an act of disobedience" (from 1 Peter 2:7). When Christ is rejected, the "living stone" becomes a "stone of stumbling" (v. 8). Unbelievers stumble (literally, fall or trip over) because they disobey God's Word and choose to lie in rebellion against God. Falling and tripping through life, unbelievers stumble over the One who could give their lives real meaning and direction. The picture of the church as a "living" house emphasizes vitality and community. The strength of the house comes from Christ, our sure foundation and supporting stone, cemented by the Holy Spirit. 3. A Chosen People (vv. 9-10) "But ye are a chosen generation" (v. 9) emphasizes that God has appointed believers a different destiny than those who reject Christ. "According as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love" (Ephesians 1:4). God chose us, and we belong to Him, and we will one day stand before Him in heaven. God's people are chosen to be "a royal priesthood" (1 Peter 2:9). As royal priests, we belong to the King and have direct access to Him. Under the Old Covenant, only the descendants of Aaron could serve as priest before God. In the New Covenant, through Christ, God invites all believers to be ministers of His royal priesthood. We have the joy and responsibility to serve God and each other. "An holy nation" describes our unique relationship with God. We have been set apart by God for His use. We are servants of God and citizens of heaven. "A peculiar people" affirms that we are God's possessions.

The literal translation of "peculiar people" is "a people for possession." Wow, isn't it wonderful to know that we are a prized possession, chosen to serve the King! When God's people serve the King, they show the praises of Him who has called us out of darkness into His marvelous light (v. 9b). We are to praise God and proclaim His wonderful acts of salvation to the world. We were once in darkness (spiritually dead), but now we are in the light (eternally alive). God's grace toward us is available to everyone, and we have been chosen to proclaim this Good News to the world. We can testify that we "in time past were not a people, but are now the people of God" (v. 10). God's people know that we did not always belong to God. Peter quotes Hosea to explain how ungodly people became God's people. The Israelites were called "not my people" because of their disobedience to God. However, God mercifully restored their broken relationship and called them "my people" (Hosea 1:1011; 2:23). Just as God's mercy made it possible for the Israelites to become His people, His mercy allows us to become His people as well. Mercy implies that God chose to show us pity, compassion, and concern. He showed His mercy through Christ's life, death, and resurrection. Since we "now have obtained mercy" (1 Peter 2:10b), we have become God's people, a chosen people, called to praise and serve Him. As God's people, we have been chosen to be brothers and sisters in the household of God. We willingly give up the things of the world and grow in our relationship with God and each other. As a royal family, we are set apart to serve the King. We taste His goodness daily and experience His mercy as we submit control of our lives to Him. Believers are God's people for eternity! We have reason to praise Him. MORE LIGHT ON TEXT 1 Peter 2:1-10 1. Wherefore laying aside all malice, and all guile, and hypocrisies, and envies, and all evil speakings, The "wherefore" of this verse takes us back to chapter 1, where Peter's readers were reminded of their status as the children of God and the costliness of that status, the precious blood of Christ. In light of this, believers should be "laying aside" (Gk. apotithemi, ap-ot-EETH-ay-mee) or "putting off" the old way of living. The verb apotithemi is often used to refer to taking off clothing. Believers are to take off or lay aside these vices. Peter Davids notes, "What has been gotten rid of, however, is not the grosser vices of paganism, but community-destroying vices that are often tolerated by the modern church. These vices are disruptive to the life of the community" (Davids, 80). They are love killers, since they destroy our ability to love well as Peter commands his readers to do in chapter 1. "Malice" (Gk. kakia, kak-EE-ah), which is "ill will toward others"; "guile" (Gk. dolos, DOL-os), which is "untruthfulness"; "hypocrisy" (Gk. hupokrisis, hoopOK-ree-sis), which is "deceptiveness"; "envy" (Gk. phthonos, FTHON-os), which is "despising another because you want what they have"; and "evil speech" Gk. katalalia, kat-al-al-EEah), which is "envy verbalized" are all to be ended, laid aside by believers. These things destroy the fellowship of the church and should not be tolerated in ourselves or in others. 2. As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby: Instead, believers are to long for the "sincere" or "pure" (Gk. adolos, AD-ol-os) milk of the Word. Peter's point here is not to indicate that his readers were still in a stage of Christian infancy, but rather to urge them to continue their earnest, compelling need for the Word of God, the teachings about Jesus. Just like babies long for natural milk, believers are to long for the Word of God that they might grow spiritually. Yes, God has redeemed them. They are saved. Their new life has begun, but now they must keep growing and continuing in the Word of God, which will produce that growth individually and collectively. 3. If so be ye have tasted that the Lord is gracious. This exhortation is not grounded in an abstract Jesus, but in the Jesus with whom the believers at Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia have become familiar. He is the One whom hopefully they have "tasted" (Gk. geuomai, gee-oo-O-mah-ee), that is, experienced a relationship with, the One who is gracious. 4. To whom coming, as unto a living stone, disallowed indeed of men, but chosen of God, and precious, 5. Ye also, as lively stones, are built up a spiritual house, an holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ. And even more so, believers can rejoice in the fact that the One to whom they have come to receive salvation, though "rejected" (Gk. apodokimazo, ap-odokee-MAD-zo) by non-believers, was God's "chosen" (Gk. eklektos, ek-lek-TOS), His beloved. Peter's imagery here is that of a building, a temple. In this metaphor, Christ is the living stone, the Chief Corner Stone as we will learn in verse 6. He holds the whole building together and because of our relationship with Him, we get to be part of the building. For in Him, we are made living stones which God is using to build this great house for Himself—a house in which we also become priests who offer up to God, through our lives, acceptable sacrifices that God only accepts in and through Christ. 6. Wherefore also it is contained in the scripture, Behold, I lay in Sion a chief corner stone, elect, precious: and he that believeth on him shall not be confounded. Peter grounds what he has said about Christ in the Old Testament Scripture. He quotes in this verse from Isaiah 28:16, where God indicates His rejection of the rebellious leaders of Jerusalem and His intention to establish, in the future, the One who, by His ministry and life, would stand in opposition to them. God would make Him the chief foundation of His great work of salvation and all who put their trust in Him would indeed be saved. That Peter sees Jesus as this "chief corner stone"—the fulfillment of Isaiah's prophecy—is clear. Peter makes it clear that all who "believeth" (Gk. pistis, piz-TEES) in Jesus will find true salvation. 7. Unto you therefore which believe he is precious: but unto them which be disobedient, the stone which the builders disallowed, the same is made the head of the corner, Concerning this passage, Wayne Grudem writes, "Peter puts his readers in the category of those 'who believe in him' (v. 6) and concludes that therefore they 'will not be put to shame' but will rather share in the 'chosen and precious' status of the cornerstone on whom they trust…" (Grudem, 104). Indeed, believers will not be put to "shame" (Gk. kataischuno, kat-ahee-SKHOO-no) but will receive honor because of their trust in Christ. However, those who disbelieve— who reject Christ—will find that God has made Him the chief stone. And since being a part of the house means being connected to and trusting the chief stone, to reject Him is to be rejected from being a part of

God's house. 8. And a stone of stumbling, and a rock of offence, even to them which stumble at the word, being disobedient: whereunto also they were appointed. Instead of being connected to the chief stone— Jesus—those who disbelieve find Him to be "a stone of stumbling" (Gk. lithos proskomma, LEE-thos PROSkom-ma) and "a rock of offence" (Gk. petra skandalon, PET-ra SKAN-dal-on). They disbelieved God's Word and they rejected their only hope of salvation. Yet Peter's words are meant to be an encouragement to believers. Grudem writes, "Peter's purpose in making this comment is to comfort his readers. He has shown that the rejection of Christ and even the hostile unbelief which confronted these Christians on every side were predicted by God long ago in the Old Testament (vv. 7-8a). Now he says that they were not only predicted but also planned (v. 8b) and are therefore within the scope of his sovereign and wise plan for the world" (Grudem, 106). We should take heart, therefore, when we are faced with the same kind of hostile unbelief, knowing that God has it under control. He knew from the foundation of the world that there would be those who would reject Christ. 9. But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light: Believers share a glorious status before God. The titles here are Old Testament titles used for the nation of Israel. In Exodus 19:5-6, God says to the nation of Israel, "Now therefore, if ye will obey my voice indeed, and keep my covenant, then ye shall be a peculiar treasure unto me above all people: for all the earth is mine: And ye shall be unto me a kingdom of priests, and an holy nation. These are the words which thou shalt speak unto the children of Israel." In Isaiah 43:20-21, RSV, God declares, "The wild beasts will honor me, the jackals and the ostriches; for I give water in the wilderness, rivers in the desert, to give drink to my chosen people, the people whom I formed for myself that they might declare my praise." The titles given to the nation of Israel are now given to the church. The church is now designated as the people of God, His "chosen generation" (Gk. genos eklektos GHEN-os ek-lek-TOS), His "royal priesthood" (Gk. basileios hierateuma, bas-IL-i-os hee-er-ATyoo-mah), His "holy nation" (Gk. ethnos hagios, ETH-nos HEG-ee-os), His "people for His own possession" (Gk. laos eis peripoiesis, lah-OS ice peree-POY-ay-sis). And the church's purpose could not be clearer. We are from this exalted status to be a people who by our lives "declare" (Gk. exaggello, ex-ang-EL-lo) the praises of God in all the world. 10. Which in time past were not a people, but are now the people of God: which had not obtained mercy, but now have obtained mercy. There was a time when believers could not claim this status, a time when we were not the people of God, but not anymore. In Christ we have become God's people. We are His. At one time we were objects of God's wrath; not anymore. Now we are the recipients of His divine "mercy" (Gk. eleeo, el-h-EHo-).

Those persons that were brought into the conflict should have done what scriptures teach and that would be to encourage reconciliation between Dorothy and Sylvia. And above all prayer should have been incorporated. As I said previously this is not how the situation was handled, it was allowed to progress with the hope that these two ladies would work things out or either it would be forgotten about over time, and everyone would move on. We have a tendency too not want to “rock the boat,” but the boat is already rocking! We need spiritual leaders who will not be afraid to “get involved” and speak up at the appropriate time and in the appropriate way All conflict is not bad, for conflict can provide the opportunity for personal growth. The issues that occurred between Dorothy and Sylvia should have been defined so that each realized where they played a part in the conflict. Each person needs to realize it wasn’t just the other person wrong by themselves, but each played a role. Also, they must ask themselves the question is what happened to me, worth causing division? Sylvia should also be encouraged to apologize to the people that she had brought into the conflict, and then allow the people to see them working together toward reconciliation. Often when conflicts arise we want to see the other person punished, we want them to pay for what they did to us. This is what happened with Dorothy and Sylvia, even though Dorothy apologized, Sylvia was still hurt and wanted Dorothy to pay for what she had done.

NO. 2 CELEBRATES WITH IT’S SISTER CHURCH IN HONORING PASTOR MELVIN ASHLEY & 1ST LADY ANGELA ASHLEY’S 5TH APPRECIATION SERVICE On Sunday, October 25, 2009, our beloved Pastor, the Reverend Kalvin E. Cressel, Sr., and the Members of Greater Mt. Sinai Missionary Baptist Church No 2, in the City of Compton, California participated in honoring the Pastor and First Lady of Greater Love Christian Center located at 11165 S. Central Avenue, Los Angeles, in a spirit filled celebration. Theme: “Our Pastor, a Man of Integrity, Faithfully Preaching and Teaching the Word of God”. (Jeremiah 3:15) Pastor KC delivered such an inspirational message to this young Church. Prior to that, our Members enjoyed a joyous and thought provoking Sunday school lesson taught by our own Deacon Gregory Johnson. The lesson was entitled “True Treasure Costs”, Mark 10:17-31 about the rich man who refused to give up his treasurers in order to enter Heaven. After much discussion, he gave each person the following list of questions and asked us to rate them using Zeros or Dollar Signs:

intent of this fantastic exercise and apply the knowledge gained. At our 10:45 a.m. worship, Pastor Cressel taught on Transformation, Matthew 17:1 and again we learned that in order to go through the Transformation process, we must first Suffer, then experience Sadness and finally Surrender to the Holy Spirit. In essence, whatever we go through, it’s a part of God’s plan, but be assured that it is a part of our purpose on purpose to be used for His purpose, for no problems come to last, they only come to past. Why don’t you come and worship with us on any Sunday? Bible Institute starts at 9:15 a.m. followed by our Morning Worship service at 10:45 a.m. We are located at 12317 S. Wilmington Avenue, Compton, California, telephone (310) 631-0261. We’ll be glad to have had you!!! Reverend Kalvin E. Cressel, Sr., Pastor/Teacher Mother Sandra Taylor, Reporter

ONE FAITH FELLOWSHIP’S NUGGETS FOR THE SOUL

“Truly It Pays” Yes, “It Truly Pays” to be obedient to the Lord!!!! We will prosper, be blessed, promoted and elevated into arenas we know we could not have placed ourselves! If we want to experience new levels of the Glory of God, then we must remember that it truly pays to be obedient to the Lord! Daniel 3:30NLT-Then the king promoted Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego to even higher positions in the province of Babylon. Daniel 6: 28KJ- So this Daniel prospered in the reign of Darius and in the reign of Cyrus the Persian. Both of these verses came at the conclusion of their tests of obedience and commitment. Daniel 3:11-21Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego were challenged to bow down and worship King Nebuchadnezzar’s golden image or to be cast into the Fiery Furnace. They chose to stay faithful to God-in obedience to Him and not to bow to any other gods but Him. Daniel 6:7-16- Daniel was challenged to stop praying to his God or be thrown into the Lion’s den. But Daniel prayed the more to the God of His salvation. Daniel chose to stay faithful to God and in obedience continued praying to Him. Because they took a stand for God; God was right there with

them! Daniel 3:27- And the princes, governors, and captains, and the king’s counselors, being gathered together, saw these men, upon whose bodies the fire had no power, nor was an hair of their head singed, neither were their coats changed, nor the smell of fire had passed on them. Daniel 6:23- Then was the king exceeding glad for him, and commanded that they should take Daniel up out of the den. So Daniel was taken up out of the den, and no manner of hurt was found upon him, because he believed in his God. Shadrach, Meshach, Abednego and Daniel believed in their God. Do we? Do we trust Him in any and every situation? The Lord says He will be with us both in the Fiery Furnace and the Lion’s den! But His question to us is: will WE be with Him in these locations? We can confidently and bravely answer yes, because He will definitely be right there with us! Well, in addition to experiencing the Glory of God, and being used as Vessels to expand the reality of God to other people; they ALSO experienced the “Fruit of Obedience”. Each of them, although already blessed and favored, was ushered into a greater arena of blessings and favor in that they experienced the “More” of God. So,

no matter what, we must stay in faith and obedience to God and we will be promoted to higher heights and deeper depths into the riches, blessings and promotions from our Heavenly Father- our DADDY-GOD! Upcoming event: This Saturday-1 st Saturday Enrichment Fellowship, Nov. 7, 2009 12-2:00 p.m.-Speaker- Ms. Bonita Humphery, U S Bank Community Center, (Slauson and Crenshaw) 5760 S. California Community Connections Corporation Pastor Stephen L. McGlover CEO & President

PASTOR STEPHEN McGLOVER

Joins the BBA along with others Associates who bring into question whether the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) are doing enough to involve minority-owned businesses in projects that use federal stimulus dollars. As an advocacy organization, C-4 (California Community Connection Corp) feels it is important that the African-American community is involved in the moneys that come into our cities and communities. Black owned businesses play a significant in the economics in this country and have made great contributions to the world at large and this must be respected and not be ignored. Our businesses are a part of the makeup of this society and we must be allowed to participate in the economical growth of our communities and not be ambushed by the political games that are being played.

Here in California, Caltrans is not following federal guidelines that require the recipients of stimulus funds to “make Vigorous efforts” to maximize the involvement of minority and women-owned businesses. Caltrans has awarded less than 1 percent of stimulus contracts to minority contractors these statistics were released last month. Compared to other ethnic groups it seems we are at the bottom. We must stand up and be counted. There are some of our companies that are qualified but it’s been said that we can not find them and that’s a lie. They are not looking hard enough and stop playing the numbers game. Companies must be given the assistance needed without resistance and not lip service. I want you to know that Caltrans Disadvantaged Business Enterprise (DBE) program was established as a framework for ensuring fair participation in federally funded pubic works projects in California, but has faced challenges. In 2006, Caltrans suspended the program’s race- and genderconscious elements after a federal appeals court ruled that states had to document the existence of discrimination in the awarding of contracts. As a result, the number of women- and minority owned businesses

awarded Caltrans projects plummeted- from nearly 11 percent in 2005 to just roughly 2% percent in 2006. If anything has hurt our economy this is one thing that has hurt us in California. If 85% of the employment in this state is done by small business what wrong with our logic? We must be stick on??? In light of the pending law suit brought on by Pacific Legal Foundation on behalf of the Associated General Contractors of America, Caltrans has a duty and commitment to the African American Business community. Let us not forget “Equal Opportunity under the Law. We are being excluded from federal and state contract this must change it’s time for action. Contact your city county state officials and put in question their procurement practices things must change are we will have only two classes in this country. This is a call to action. In Proverbs 13:22 A good man leaveth and inheritance to his children’s children: and the wealth of the sinner (wicked) is laid up for the just. Our children and our children’s children are counting on us. Family of God, Pastor and Leader as you know in Luke 19:13 Christ tells his servants to Occupy till he comes, that word applies to us today. It’s time to take care of business.

Southside Bethel B.C. “Family of Purpose”

69th Church Anniversary and Family & Friends Day Weekend of Service and Celebration We are excited to announce our 69th Church Anniversary and all the events leading up towards the culminating Anniversary Worship Celebration on Sunday, November 22, 2009 at 3:30 p.m. Since 1940, our church community has set trends of worship, service and gratitude and in 2009, we continue this long rich heritage that was set before us. Our founding Pastor Rev. Elliott Brown Sr. was called from Georgia to Pastor Evangelistic Baptist Church which was located on Holmes Ave in the Palm Lane area, where Martin Luther King Hospital now sits. With his vision the church was able to purchase our current location at 10400 S. San Pedro Street. The name

changed to Southside Bethel B.C. many ministries were birthed and relationships nurtured. After almost 50 years of pastoring, Pastor Elliott Brown Sr. passed the torch to Rev. Allen O. Simmons. Under his leadership additional properties were purchased, renovation of major parts of the sanctuary were done and many more advances in ministry went forth. After the passing of Pastor Allen O. Simmons, the church voted overwhelmingly to appoint Pastor Frederick E. Howard to the position of Pastor. Pastor Howard jumped off the wagon with his feet moving with an initial beautification project, which beautified the campus with decorative Rod Iron Gates and paved parking area. Pastor Howard began working on

the mindset of the believers and promoted a “Joshua Walk” Sermon Series entitled “And the Walls came Tumbling Down” for seven weeks the church arrived and prepared for battle, walked around the property one time every Sunday and came back into the sanctuary and worshipped God, on the seventh week, the church walked around the property 6 times and on the seventh time, the church began to sing praises for what the Lord had done. Service was concluded in the parking lot under a tent. More ministries were developed with a focus on “Purpose” and Pastor Howard began to include “The Family Of Purpose” as a statement to all that visit and share in the vision of the ministry. The Lord has done marvelous things and we
