Pastor & Wife’s 10th Anniversary Celebration at Friendlywill M.B.C.

PASTOR & FIRST LADY REV. & MRS. CHEZ LISTER

Blessings and Honor, and Glory, they all belong to Him!!! Thank you Jesus, for blessing us. The Friendlywill family has set this time aside to recognize and honor our Pastor, Rev. Chez J. Lister Sr, for all that he does for the people of God. This year is even more special than years passed because we are celebrating Pastor Lister’s 40th Birthday (earlier this year) and now we celebrate his 10th year as Our Pastor. Our theme for this anniversary is “Our Pastor; Worthy Of Double Honour” I Timothy 5:17.

We recognize that our Pastor is called by God, to do a work that has been ordered by God himself. Called to minister to the sick in spirit, weak at heart, feeble minded and lost. Called to encourage believers to hold on and called to be a living, visible example as he leads others to Christ. Pastor Lister is also chosen by God to lead the people of Friendlywill. He was chosen by God, from among many, for this “little church on 68 th Street”. Chosen to be a missionary, to preach the gospel, each and every time he steps into that Holy Place, no matter if it is at home or away.

Pastor Lister is committed and dedicated to doing the Lord and to the work of the Lord. He is a willing vessel and is always ready to serve the Lord. He is committed to the Family of Friendlywill, with only our best interest at heart. He is not working alone, for by his side is his praying wife, Sis. Tanja Lister. She is a steadfast, selfless woman of God. She’s always lifting others up in prayer, even when she is not well herself. They have four children; Ashtyn, Chez Jr., Aaron and Taurean. The entire family is actively involved in the church, from the Sr. Choir to the Usher Board and Sunday School too. Yes, Our Pastor and First Lady are a very special blessing to the family of Friendlywill, so we’ve come together to show Pastor Lister & First Lady Lister how much we love them. Special guests have been invited to share in this great event with us. On Sunday, November 8, 2009 at 3:30pm, our guest churches will be Mt. Chapel M.B.C., Pastor E.D. Plump (Speaker) and Manchester M.B.C., Pastor R.J. Ridgeway Sr. On Friday, November 13, 2009 at 7:30p.m. our guest churches will be Faithful St. Mark M.B.C.,

In Loving Memory of Mrs.Oretha Grace Bonner

MRS. ORETHA GRACE BONNER

In Memory of Mrs. Oretha Grace Bonner....Another Soldier Gone Home to Be with the Lord.... Mrs. Oretha Grace Bonner has gone on from Labor to Reward...Oretha was born on April 5, 1955 in Chicago Illinois, the second of six children. She confessed Jesus as Lord and Savior and was baptized in Chicago Illinois. She and her family moved first to Oakland, then to Los Angeles in 1971, whereupon they joined the First Missionary Baptist Church under the Pastorage of the late Rev. R.R. Williiams. She attended and graduated from Fremont High School and later married and brought a beautiful bouncing baby boy to us. David was the apple of her eye, and she loved him dearly. “Auntie Oretha” was soft spoken, patient, kind and

inspirational. She was a very loving person and she specialized in ENCOURAGING whomever she could, in any situation. Her favorite scripture that she recommended to everyone was Psalms 91. She made everyone feel special, and she radiated the love of God and the Holy Spirit in her daily life . Oretha was employed by the United States Postal Service for over 20 years. The Lord called our precious Auntie Oretha home to be with Him on October 29, 2009 at 10:41 am. Cherishing her wonderful memories are her husband, Mr. WIlie Bonner of Beaumont, Ca; her son David Genyard, Daughter in Law Jaquilla and two adorable granddaughters, Savannah and Jasmine, all of Jacksonville Florida; her loving parents, longtime and faithful members of the Greater New Unity Baptist Church, Bro. and Sister Jimmie and Willie Bell; 5 siblings, Gwendolyn Price (Paul) of Branch, MS; Patricia Moore, Shearon Bell, Clifton (Trannie) Bell and Terry Bell Sr, all of Los Angeles; a very special Aunt, Aunt Ruby of New Jersey, and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, coworkers and friends far too numerous to mention. We love Auntie Oretha and will miss her, but will see her again in that great -getting-up morning by and by..so in her own precious words, “bye for now”.

MATTHEW 28:19 - “Go Ye Therefore and Teach...”

A SUFFERING PEOPLE NOVEMBER 15 -- BIBLE STUDY GUIDE 11 Bible Background • 1 PETER 4 Printed Text • 1 PETER 4:12-19 Devotional Reading • I COR. 12:20-26 AIM for Change By the end of the lesson, we will: KNOW that suffering is a part of Christian living, RECALL a time when we found joy in suffering, and SUPPORT or seek support for those who are suffering, through prayer and outreach. Keep in Mind: "Wherefore let them that suffer according to the will of God commit the keeping of their souls to him in well doing, as unto a faithful Creator" (1 Peter 4:19). Focal verses: KJV 1 Peter 4:12 Beloved, think it not strange concerning the fiery trial which is to try you, as though some strange thing happened unto you: 13 But rejoice, inasmuch as ye are partakers of Christ's sufferings; that, when his glory shall be revealed, ye may be glad also with

exceeding joy. 14 If ye be reproached for the name of Christ, happy are ye; for the spirit of glory and of God resteth upon you: on their part he is evil spoken of, but on your part he is glorified. 15 But let none of you suffer as a murderer, or as a thief, or as an evildoer, or as a busybody in other men's matters. 16 Yet if any man suffer as a Christian, let him not be ashamed; but let him glorify God on this behalf. 17 For the time is come that judgment must begin at the house of God: and if it first begin at us, what shall the end be of them that obey not the gospel of God? 18 And if the righteous scarcely be saved, where shall the ungodly and the sinner appear? 19 Wherefore let them that suffer according to the will of God commit the keeping of their souls to him in well doing, as unto a faithful Creator.

IN FOCUS Paul stood by watching as the mob stoned Stephen to death (Acts 7:58; 8:1). As Paul observed Stephen's murder, he had no idea he, too, would one day suffer for Christ. However, after his conversion (9:1-19), Paul suffered greatly for Christ. He described his suffering as follows: "Five times I received from the Jews the forty lashes minus one. Three times I was beaten with rods, once I was stoned, three times I was shipwrecked, I spent a night and a day in the open sea, I have been constantly on the move...I have labored and toiled and have gone without sleep; I have known hunger and thirst and have often gone without food; I have been cold and naked. Besides everything else, I face the daily pressure of my concern for all the churches" (2 Corinthians 11:24-28, NIV). God does not guarantee believers freedom from suffering. In fact, Jesus said we should expect some suffering in our lives (John 16:1-4, 33). In today's lesson, Peter explains the rewards of suffering with Christ for righteousness. The People, Places, and Times Peter. The apostle is usually remembered for his three denials of Christ, rather than his changed life. After receiving the Holy Spirit, the same Peter who denied Christ preached the Gospel wherever he went, regardless of the consequences. Peter willingly suffered for his belief in Christ. Tradition maintains that Peter was crucified in Rome during the persecution unleashed by the emperor Nero. According to the legend, Peter felt he was unworthy to die in the same manner as His Lord, so he was crucified upside down. Background Suffering and salvation are the main themes of Peter's first letter. Because of their faith in Christ, many first-century believers were experiencing abuse and persecution. They were shunned and harassed by their Jewish brethren and persecuted by Rome because of their refusal to worship Caesar. Peter wrote to encourage the believers to faithfully endure their trials. The apostle does not promise his readers an end to their suffering. Instead, he tries to prepare them for more persecution. Peter was concerned about their behavior during their suffering. He instructed them and us to live righteously and in harmony with one another whatever the circumstances. Believers are not to respond to evil with evil, but with love (1 Peter 3:8-12). IN DEPTH 1. The Fiery Trials of Our Faith (1 Peter 4:12) It is easy to understand suffering which results from doing wrong, but to suffer for doing right seems unfair. Yet Peter warns us that this could happen. Christ is our example of suffering in righteousness; therefore, we should not be surprised when we suffer. Consequently, Peter tells us, "Beloved, think it not strange concerning the fiery trial which is to try you, as though some strange thing happened unto you" (v. 12). "Fiery trials" refers to the ordeals that purify us and make us more familiar with what Christ endured. What better example can believers have than Christ, who suffers for righteousness' sake? Even He was not exempt from suffering in this life. He is the perfect example of what it means to suffer unjustly, "For Christ also hath once suffered for sins" (1 Peter 3:18). Although Christ was sorely tempted, He was without sin. Our Lord, who had no sin, paid the price for all those who had no righteousness. He was an innocent man who sacrificed His life for the guilty. Christ suffered the punishment we deserve—the just for the unjust. If Christ had to suffer, why would Christians believe we can escape it? Why would God allow His Son to suffer unjustly? The Word of God tells us so "that he might bring us to God" (v. 18b). Bringing us to God or restoring our relationship with God was achieved through Christ's atoning death and resurrection. His death bridged the gap of sin that separates humanity from God. 2. The Believers' Response to Fiery Trials (vv. 13-14) Peter explains that knowing the reason for our suffering means we can "rejoice" when we experience "fiery trials," inasmuch as we are "partakers of Christ's sufferings" (v. 13). Peter's admonition reminds us of Jesus' teaching, "Rejoice, and be exceedingly glad: for great is your reward in heaven" (Matthew 5:12). Our joyous attitude comes from knowing that as we share in Christ's suffering, we will also share in His glory. We look forward to the day when Christ returns and His glory is revealed to all humanity. What a day of rejoicing that will be! How should believers respond to such suffering? Peter tells us to be happy! (1 Peter 4:14). A better translation of "happy are ye" is "you are blessed." Yes, we are blessed to suffer for doing what is right. This may be hard to believe, but Jesus taught a similar idea in the Beatitudes: "Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness' sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven" (Matthew 5:10). This blessing or happiness results from finding favor with God and knowing that we belong to God, who promises future vindication. Thus, rather than being afraid of trouble, we should redirect our focus to the Lord. Instead of concentrating on our ordeals, believers should look "in [our] hearts" to our relationship with God (1 Peter 3:15). We acknowledge that He is holy and

in total control of whatever happens. When we revere the Lord in our hearts, we increase our confidence in Him. This confidence in God overcomes our fears. Focusing on God prepares us to "be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear" (v. 15b). When believers rejoice in the midst of suffering, people recognize a difference in us. They begin to wonder and question why we have such hope. Peter tells us to always be prepared to explain why our lives are different. Believers must be ready at all times to witness and share the Gospel with everyone who questions our faith. Suffering for righteousness often leads to opportunities to share our faith. The apostle tells us that we should be happy when people have insulted ("reproached") us for the name of Christ. It affirms that "the spirit of glory and of God resteth upon you" (v. 14). Peter draws from Isaiah 11:2 to remind his readers that this power of the Holy Spirit enables Christians to glorify God, even when suffering. 3. The Reward of Glorifying God in the Fiery Trials (vv. 15-19) Peter's life is a prime example of the difference the Holy Spirit makes in one's life. Remember how Peter fearfully denied knowing Jesus three times during Christ's arrest and trial (Matthew 26:69ff.). But after Christ's resurrection, when Peter had received the Holy Spirit, he preached, suffered, and was martyred for Christ. For Peter and all Christians, suffering is nothing to be ashamed of because it glorifies God. According to legend, Peter was crucified upside down for preaching Christ, but his death was not disgraceful because God was glorified. When people suffer for breaking the law or doing evil, they deserve the shame that results from their deeds (1 Peter 4:15). Often their families are tainted by their disgrace. On the other hand, suffering for Christ brings glory to God and to the entire family of faith (v. 17). Because we can look past the trials to the rewards, believers have hope in suffering. The rewards of suffering are many: Suffering strengthens the faith of all who endure; it strips away superficial beliefs; and believers' joyful attitude, while suffering, serves as an example to others. When Christ returns, all who have suffered for His sake will be greatly rewarded. MORE LIGHT ON TEXT 1 Peter 4:12-19 Introduction: In chapter 4, the Apostle Peter resumes a train of thought from chapter 3 (verses 17 and 18), in which he wrote that, because Christ suffered for our sins, it is better to suffer for doing "good" than for doing "evil." Verse 1 introduces the theme of suffering by reminding us of Christ's suffering, and urging Christians to adapt to His suffering value. Verses 2-6 give two reasons why our lives ought to be so different from the non-Christians around us: 1) we've spent enough time in the past doing sinful things, and are now anxious to do the will of God; and 2) we know that our actions will be judged by God. With that pending judgment in mind, Peter gives practical instruction in verses 7-11 on how to live: be sober, watchful, prayerful, and above all else, show Christ's love to one another. 12. Beloved, think it not strange concerning the fiery trial which is to try you, as though some strange thing happened unto you: 13. But rejoice, inasmuch as ye are partakers of Christ's sufferings; that, when his glory shall be revealed, ye may be glad also with exceeding joy. The author now turns to a discussion of what we should think of suffering. The first instruction is to not be surprised when suffering happens. "Strange" (Gk. xenizo, xen-ID-zo) is the same word used in verse 4; in this context, it means "to be surprised, astonished." "Fiery trial" (Gk purosis, POO-ro-sis) means "an intense degree of some painful occurrence or experience, burning ordeal." "Trial" is used in the Greek translation of the Old Testament in Proverbs 27:21 to refer to the process of testing metals by fire: a crucible. It seems likely that the Christians to whom Peter wrote were about to experience intense persecution at the hands of Nero, a Roman emperor who unleashed a campaign of brutality and cruelty toward Christians in A.D. 64. Because we are "partakers of Christ's sufferings" (1 Peter 4:13), the expectation of suffering should be shared by Christians of all times. This does not mean that our suffering has the same atoning power as Christ's suffering, but that suffering is just one of the ways that we share in Christ's experience. In fact, the New Testament teaches that salvation features union with Christ in His death and resurrection (Romans 6:5), as well as in His glorification (8:17), His role as judge (Matthew 19:28), and receipt of His heavenly inheritance (Romans 8:17). Because the world hated Him (Matthew 10:22), this is the reason Jesus instructed His followers to expect persecution. Peter instructs Christians to rejoice in their sufferings not because we are supposed to enjoy pain, but because the sharing in Christ's suffering is evidence that we will in fact share the many priceless blessings of divine Sonship. The revelation of His glory will happen at His return, when He comes back to earth as He promised (16:27). At that point, His glory will also be our glory, because "when he shall appear, we shall be like him" (1 John 3:2). 14 If ye be reproached for the name of Christ, happy are ye; for the spirit of glory and of God resteth upon you: on their part he is evil spoken of, but on your part he is glorified. The Greek verb translated "reproached" (Gk. oneidizo, on-i-DID-zo) means "to find fault in a way

CEMETERY PLOTS AVAILABLE that demeans the other." It can also be translated "revile, mock, heap insults upon." "Happy" (Gk. makarios, mak-AR-ee-os) is the same Greek word used by Jesus in the Beatitudes (Matthew 5:3-11). In fact, Peter's words here seem to be based on what Jesus teaches in Matthew 5:10-12—suffering persecution and insults for the sake of Christ are causes for rejoicing. In Acts 5:41, Peter and John rejoiced because they were "counted worthy" to suffer for the name of Christ. 1 Peter 4:14 is the only verse in the Bible in which the Holy Spirit is referred to as "the Spirit of glory" (NIV, RSV). The words used here bring to mind Stephen who, "full of the Holy Ghost," looked up to heaven and saw the glory of God in the moments preceding his death (Acts 7:55-56). 15. But let none of you suffer as a murderer, or as a thief, or as an evildoer, or as a busybody in other men's matters. 16. Yet if any man suffer as a Christian, let him not be ashamed; but let him glorify God on this behalf. Earlier in the book Peter had asked in essence, "What good is it to endure suffering brought on by our own wrongdoing?" (from 2:20) This is not to discourage us from accepting the consequences of our actions, but to promote a godly determination to suffer for doing good rather than for doing wrong. While we should not seek suffering, we should be prepared to experience persecution as we faithfully follow Christ. This was the common experience of Christians during the Roman Empire until A.D. 313; in a context where persecution is normal, it is important to have the right perspective. One of the hard teachings of the Bible is the idea that it is better to suffer unjustly than justly. After all, when we suffer, our first protest is normally, "I don't deserve this!" But the Apostle Paul is a good example for us. In 2 Timothy 1:8-12, he encourages Timothy to willingly partake of suffering for the sake of Jesus, and he explains why he himself is not ashamed to suffer: "For I know whom I have believed, and am persuaded that he is able to keep that which I have committed unto him against that day" (v. 12). 17. For the time is come that judgment must begin at the house of God: and if it first begin at us, what shall the end be of them that obey not the gospel of God? 18. And if the righteous scarcely be saved, where shall the ungodly and the sinner appear? "Judgment" (Gk. krima, KREE-mah) frequently refers to condemnation, but it refers to judicial determination here. All who have ever lived, including Christians, will be judged by Christ when He returns (Matthew 16:27). The statement that judgment begins with the house of God should not necessarily be taken to mean that Christians will be judged earlier than nonChristians, but that God will hold Christians more highly accountable for their actions than those who did not believe. Another passage where this principle of elevated accountability is evident is Matthew 11:20-24, in which Jesus pronounces woe upon cities, such as Bethsaida, in which He had performed miracles and they failed to repent. Jesus compares them unfavorably to some of the most notorious cities in the Scriptures, saying that even Sodom would have repented had they seen the same signs. We should not understand these verses to mean that Christians are ever at risk of losing their status as God's children at the Judgment, but that God takes sin seriously. Christians who have been faithful to obey God can expect great reward, and Christians who have been careless or lazy will be saved, "but like someone barely escaping through a wall of flames" (1 Corinthians 3:15, NLT; see also Matthew 24:45-47). The eternal consequences for "the ungodly and the sinner" (1 Peter 4:18, unbelievers) are too terrible to conceive. Second Thessalonians 1:8-9 describes their judgment with terms such as "vengeance" and "everlasting destruction." Revelation 20:15 reports that all whose names are not found in the Book of Life will be thrown into the lake of fire—the same fate that Satan will receive (20:10). 19. Wherefore let them that suffer according to the will of God commit the keeping of their souls to him in well doing, as unto a faithful Creator. Those who "suffer according to the will of God" are those who suffer for following Christ and doing "good." "Commit the keeping" (Gk. paratithemi, parat-ITHay-mee) means "to entrust for safekeeping, give over, entrust, commend." "In well doing" modifies the verb "commit" and most likely carries the meaning "as/ while they do good deeds." Once again, both Jesus (Luke 23:46) and Paul (2 Timothy 1:8-12) provide examples of this attitude. Christians are to remember that we were created by God for His own glory (Isaiah 43:7). This provides comfort, even if the enemies of Christ bring pain and sorrow into our lives, because we know that God will not let His purpose fail (Psalm 138:8). This is our hope until Jesus returns. Search the Scriptures 1. If we suffer for doing what is right, what should be our attitude (1 Peter 4:13)? 2. What is the ultimate result of Christians' suffering for doing right (v. 14)? 3. What are some things that believers should not suffer for (v. 15)? 4. Where will God's judgment begin (v. 17)? Discuss the Meaning 1. Can believers really be happy while suffering? 2. How is this accomplished? 3. What is a "testimony"? Lesson in Our Society Suffering for ideals or beliefs is rare in our society. The very idea of suffering is abhorrent to most. One reason for the high suicide rate is that many people cannot cope when things do not go well. We are taught to avoid, instead of endure, suffering. If we lived in a country where being a Christian could mean imprisonment or death, would you admit to knowing Christ? Would you be willing to suffer for Christ in order to bring glory to God? A more specific question is: Are you willing to stand up for Christ at work, school, and among your friends and relatives, knowing that you may suffer or be ridiculed? Make It Happen Are you experiencing persecution or suffering? Evaluate your situation to see if your suffering is the result of wrong choices or righteous living. If you are suffering for righteousness, what is your attitude toward the suffering? Are you rejoicing in suffering? Can you thank God for it? Ask God to give you a spirit of joy, happiness, and endurance. Maybe you know someone who is suffering for righteousness' sake. Take time this week to encourage the person with a brief note, email message, or phone call.

Conflict Management Case Study Part 3 of 4 I think it is realistic to say that this conflict was escalated by assumptions, past experiences and others keeping quite and not speaking up encouraging the two in conflict to reconcile and to be restored in fellowship. We tend to show by our priorities and our casual approach to spiritual things that we understand very little about spiritual warfare brought about by Satan. We must remember that Satan is the master of deceit; scripture says he is the father of lies. The word of God is the only source of truth. We must understand the importance, of adhering to scripture when confronted with conflict, whether it’s something that we are personally involved in, or it’s something that we’ve

been called into to help in the reconciliation process. We should be about living our lives so that God gets the glory in every situation. We must remember that we are not perfect; therefore, we should not expect anyone else to be. Dr. Joyce is a lay-person, under the leadership of Pastor Ticey Brown, at Mt. Tabor Missionary Baptist Church, where she serves as the Strategic Leadership Director. Too often in this life we are guilty of ignoring the guidance and the prompting of the Holy Spirit, it just seems if we can have the audacity to ignore the Holy Spirit, we should have no problems ignoring the promptings of Satan to clash with each other and to be so easily offended. 1 Peter 3:8-9, reminds us that we are family and that we should be of one mind, sympathetic towards each other, compassionate, humble, tender hearted, not rendering evil for evil, or insult for insult. But to take pity on one another, pray for one another, be sympathetic to one another; pray for each other’s happiness and well being, and in doing so inherit a blessing from God.

changing moments! This is especially true when we are in relationship with Daddy-God! It takes only “A Moment” to go from a stage where it seems nothing is going right to thinking that it can’t get any better than that moment. We can cast our cares on Him; for Daddy-God does care for us! When we don’t understand seasons in our lives and it seems that nothing good is going to come from those seasons; we can yet rest in the Lord for the manifestation of those life-changing moments. Since at any moment good can manifest out of the bad, we can rest assuredly in His loving care and know that “It Is Well.” In “A Moment”, sadness can turn into joy! So, live in faith and hope-in expectation for those life-changing moments, for there shall be many such moments experienced in life! Our Loving, Faithful and Compassionate Father doesn’t want us going around with the cares of life weighing us down; for it prevents us from fulfilling His will and from being able to enjoy the wonderful joys of life which His blood also purchased for us! So, live in expectation! Decide to patiently wait on the Lord to

New Providence M.B.C. Celebrates Annual Men and Women’s Day Praise God from whom all blessings flow! We the members of the New Providence Church family, will celebrate our Annual Men and Women’s Day on November 8, 2009. As we experience the dynamics of life; we learn that it only takes “A Moment” for EVERY-THING TO CHANGE! In “A Moment”, one’s life can be changed due to the death of loved ones, loss of employment, frightening doctor’s report; marital-breakup, alarming phone calls and etc. But just as heart-breaking events can occur in “A Moment” and alter one’s life; so can blessings manifest in “A Moment” and alter one’s life. This is because we are not aware of the behind-the-scene events, working together for our good, to produce those special lifechanging moments! This is where trusting in the Lord comes into place—not knowing the detailsbut yet resting in the knowledge that He is in control of our livesno matter what!!! This is why we should not have hung-down heads and display sad faces; for WHATEVER we are experiencing can change in “A Moment”. This is also why we must maximize enjoying good moments, for they can also change in “A Moment”. But even in the midst of life’s storms or even when promises have not yet manifested, we can yet hope in the Lord for those life-

PASTOR ELLIOTT BROWN SR.

PASTOR ALLEN O. SIMMONS

PASTOR FREDERICK E. HOWARD

FOUNDER 1940-1980

1980-1997

1997-PRESENT

We are excited to announce our 69th Church Anniversary and all the events leading up towards the culminating Anniversary Worship Celebration on Sunday, November 22, 2009 at 3:30 p.m. Since 1940, our church community has set trends of worship, service and gratitude and in 2009, we continue this long rich heritage that was set before us. Our founding Pastor Rev. Elliott Brown Sr. was called from Georgia to Pastor Evangelistic Baptist Church which was located

on Holmes Ave in the Palm Lane area, where Martin Luther King Hospital now sits. With his vision the church was able to purchase our current location at 10400 S. San Pedro Street. The name changed to Southside Bethel B.C. many ministries were birthed and relationships nurtured. After almost 50 years of pastoring, Pastor Elliott Brown Sr. passed the torch to Rev. Allen O. Simmons. Under his leadership additional properties were purchased, renovation of major parts of the sanctuary were

done and many more advances in ministry went forth. After the passing of Pastor Allen O. Simmons, the church voted overwhelmingly to appoint Pastor Frederick E. Howard to the position of Pastor. Pastor Howard jumped off the wagon with his feet moving with an initial beautification project, which beautified the campus with decorative Rod Iron Gates and paved parking area. Pastor Howard began working on the mindset of the believers and promoted a “Joshua Walk” Sermon

of the Gospel of Jesus Christ for sixty five years. On Sunday, November 22, 2009, at 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. we anticipate a glorious time in the Lord. At 4:00 p.m. our special guest will be the Friendship Baptist Church of Yorba Linda, Rev. Dr. J.D. Carrington, Pastor. We are looking forward to having a wonderful spirit filled time, as well as being blessed with the Word of God by Pastor Brown at 8:00 a.m. and Dr. Carrington at 4:00 p.m. As taken from the Psalmist and the Hebrew write, O magnify the Lord with us, and let us exalt His name together and let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another. Please come to either of these worship experiences and receive a special blessing. Our church is located at 8615 South Central Avenue, Los Angeles, CA 90002. Sis Colette Durham, Program Chairperson, Rev. J.W. Brown, Pastor.

For 54 years, Pastor Hardwick has preached Christ to his congregation, and admonished the faithful relentlessly to “watch, fight, and pray” and not allow Satan to use them as an instrument to bring the things of the world within our walls. It is no secret that “Praise City” is located in the city of Los Angeles, but what is spiritually fatal is when we allow the carnality of Los Angeles to invade Praises of Zion. Incidentally Speaking..... By Maureen Malone

He is not here, but is risen: remember how He spake unto you when He was yet in Galilee, saying, the Son of man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and the third day rise again. Luke 24:6-7. The resurrection of Jesus from the dead is the central fact of Christian history. On it, the church is built, without it; there would be no Christian church today. Jesus’ resurrection is unique. Other religions have strong ethical systems, concepts

about paradise, and various Holy Scripture. Only Christianity has a God who became man, literally died for His people and was raised again in power and glory to rule His church forever. Why is the resurrection so important? (1) Because Christ was raised from the dead, we know that the kingdom of heaven has broken into earth’s history. Our world is now headed for redemption, not disaster. God’s mighty power is at work destroying sin, creating new lives and preparing us for Jesus’ Second Coming. (2) Because of the resurrection, we know that death has been conquered, and we too will be raised from the dead to live forever with Christ. (3) The resurrection gives authority to the church’s witness in the world. Look at the early evangelistic sermons in the scriptures; the apostles’ most important message was the proclamation that Christ had been

raised from the dead! (4) The resurrection gives meaning to the church’s regular feast, the Lord’s Supper. Like the disciples on the Emmaus Road, we break bread with our risen Lord, who comes in power to save us, (5) The resurrection helps us find meaning even in great tragedy. No matter what happens to us as we walk with the Lord, the resurrection gives us hope for the future. (6) The resurrection assures us that Christ is alive and ruling His Kingdom, He is not legend, He is alive and real. (7) God’s power that brought Jesus back from the dead is available to us so that we can live for Him in an evil world. Christians can look very different from one another; they can hold widely varying beliefs and politics, life style, and even theology. But one central belief united and inspires all true Christians-JESUS CHRIST rose from the dead.

the beauty is all gone. It suddenly becomes a tragedy. So goes the church of Christ. It too has been launched into the sea of life to gather men…certainly not to sink from the weight of sin and division among the saints. Pastor warns us not to fall into these traps. Christians taking other Christians to court; Christians showing a lack of respect at the Communion table; Christian women ignoring the standards of modesty in their dress and character; Christian men who display no traits of integrity, and members arguing over any and everything…..even spiritual gifts! He reminds us not to become caught up in “self”, and to keep our eyes on Jesus Christ, and remember that Christ said to Peter, “Upon this rock I will build my church,”
