“O give thanks unto the Lord, for he is good” for his mercy endureth forever. Let the redeemed of the Lord say so… “(Psalm 107:1-2). This familiar verse of scripture reminds us that as the nation pauses this month to give “thanks” on Thanksgiving day, we know that it is the Lord who is worthy of all thanks and should be our focus on this day.

PASTOR ROBERT DeFRANCE REDEEMER M.B.C.

PASTOR PRENTISS LEWIS GREATER STARLIGHT B.C.

Although an integral part of Thanksgiving, it’s not about the turkey, the ham, the dressing, the potato pies, or the collard greens. For the believers, it’s all about celebrating the goodness of God and giving thanks “to Him” just because of who He is! Once again on Thanksgiving morning, November 26, at 9:00 AM, several churches will come

together for 8 th Annual United Worship Service to give “thanks”. The host church will be the St. Rest Baptist Church, 709 W. Manchester Ave. Los Angeles, CA 90044. We thank God for all the churches who will be participating this year: St. Rest Baptist Church, Pastor Torrey Collins, Redeemer Baptist Church, Pastor Robert L. Greetings my brothers and sister in the faith. “Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice!” (Philippians 4:4) Certainly I am rejoicing today to be able to share a great upcoming event with you. On Sunday, November 29th at 5:00 p.m. the Revelation of Christ Church will be hosting The African Children’s Choir. This choir is comprised of twenty three young people from the countries of Uganda and Kenya in the continent of Africa. Most of these youth are victims of broken homes, deceased parents,

AIDS infested villages, war torn cities and the like having virtually little or nothing. God has touched their lives and they have come to the states to perform in these concerts. Their purpose is to help raise money for their countries and to promote the Gospel of Jesus Christ wherever they go. They are on a mission! During the choir’s performance you will laugh, you will cry and you will praise God as they present hymns, contemporary songs, drum solos, their native dances and a host of surprises which will keep you on the edge of your seat.

While the choir is in Los Angeles, make sure you attend this concert and be richly blessed.

There is no admission cost but please bring a generous love offering. We look forward to seeing you. Please come early as seating and parking is limited. “T heLift” “TheLift”

Greetings to you in the mighty name of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Oh what a time we had on Saturday. The members of our Sanctuary Choir showed up and showed out for our annual Fall Music. The Theme was “Jesus Promised He will Take Care of Me” James 1:12. The men and women were elegantly and stylishly dressed, women were dressed in all black outfits with matching printed green scarves, while the men wore black trousers, white shirts and matching printed green ties they were real sharp as the onlookers looked at them in awe. We had a Hallelujah good time as they sang praises of Zion. Truly God was glorified. Once again we untraditionally baptized new members of our

church. When I say untraditionally, I mean we baptized on our church parking lot. Our portable baptizing pool was positioned on the Crenshaw side of our parking lot. At the bus stop, other buses had to blow to get the bus at the bus stop to move. The driver and the passengers were excitedly watching the baptismal. Traffic stopped for a while to watch this event. Being outside, our pastor, Rev. S.S. Shigg was able to preach to people going into the liquor store a half a block down the street, and he even had a word for those in the strip mall as well. Yes, we here at Love Lifted Me haven’t been saved so long that we forget that its those on the outside that we need to get on the inside and we are not ashamed to work and make that happen. As we prepare for our yearly fellowship with New Revelation M.B.C., located in Las Vegas NV,

where the powerful speaking Rev. Ollie Reddick is the Pastor. We are having carwashes to help support this annual service. We hold this fundraiser to help those who can’t afford to go. So they come out and help wash cars or help with refreshments. So on a Saturday you are going down Crenshaw Blvd and happen to come up to Hyde Park Blvd., come out and support us. The men of The Lift will have your car shining. And don’t forget to stop by the refreshment stand. If your near Crenshaw and Hyde Park, and something strange appears to be happening, remember, the “Liftonites” are at work. Remember, “Love is everywhere,” but we are on the southeast and southwest corner of Crenshaw and Hyde Park in the city of Los Angeles. Rev. S. S. Shigg Pastor/Organizer,Bro. Winston Baker, reporting

IN FOCUS Willie was looking out of the window when his mother, Falicia, arrived home from work. "Willie, what are you doing at the window?" she asked. Willie did not turn to look at her. He continued to stare out of the window as he replied, "I'm waiting for my daddy to come and take me to the ball game." Falicia walked over to Willie. "Honey, did your daddy call today?" "Yes ma'am," mumbled Willie. "He said that he'd pick me up around 4:00." Falicia walked away. It was already 5:30, and she did not have the heart to tell her son that his daddy probably was not coming. Falicia knew her former husband, Johnny, was not a man who kept his promises. He would simply not show up, then call a couple of weeks later with some lame excuse. As Falicia walked to her room, she turned to look at Willie who was still staring out of the window. She knew her son was counting on his father to keep his promise. She prayed that Johnny would not let Willie down again. A promise is a binding declaration between two or more people or institutions. People, governments, and institutions all make promises and assure us that we can depend on them. However, only God keeps every one of His promises. In this week's lesson, Peter confirms Christ's promise to return and usher in the new heaven and new earth. The People, Places, and Times Heaven. The firmament, the massive transparent dome that covers the earth. In the world view of the Hebrews, the blue color of the sky was attributed to the chaotic waters that the firmament separated from the earth (Genesis 1:7). The earth was thus surrounded by waters above and below (see Deuteronomy 5:8). The firmament was thought to be substantial; it had pillars (Job 26:11) and foundations (2 Samuel 22:8). When the windows of the firmament were opened, rain fell (Genesis 7:1112). In biblical Hebrew, the word for "heaven" is always plural, and the Greek translation also frequently appears in the plural. This is because "heaven" refers to the sky where the birds fly (1:20) and the place of planetary objects, stars, and the sun (1:14-16). It is also the abode of God (1 Kings 8:30), and where He is enthroned (Isaiah 66:1). Background The Apostle Peter wrote this text not only to warn Christians about false teachers, but to exhort them to grow in their faith and in the knowledge of their Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ. One principal area of attack from false teachers was the return and future judgment of Christ. If there was no future judgment, then people were free to live as they chose. In the final chapter of his second epistle, Peter directly challenges this error. He begins by admonishing the people to remember those things that he had taught them. It is important to remember the words proclaimed by anointed men and women of God. They challenge us to live holy lives, use our gifts and talents for God, and stir us when we become complacent. IN DEPTH 1. Believe God's Word (2 Peter 3:1-4) Peter intended to "stir up" the people's memory (2 Peter 3:1). To "stir up" means "to fully awaken." The apostle suggests three areas where the people's memory needed awakening: the words of the holy prophets, the commandments of the apostles, and the commandments of Christ. Peter realized that in these "last days" many people would question Christian beliefs in the Lord (v. 3). These people would cause others to have doubts about the authority of God's Word. Peter called these unbelievers "scoffers" (v. 3). "Scoffers" are false teachers who mock the truth. The apostle had already warned the people that these scoffers would infiltrate the church with their "damnable heresies" (2:1). Some even went as far as denying the divine nature of Christ. The "last days" refer to the period between the first and second coming of Christ. During this period, ungodly teachers will deny that Christ is coming back to execute judgment. "They will say, 'Where is this "coming" he promised? Ever since our fathers died, everything goes on as it has since the beginning of creation'" (3:4, NIV). It is sad that people are deceived into believing Christ is not coming again. However, Peter's message is clear: Do not listen to these scoffers and do not follow them. God's Word is true and His promises are unfailing. 2. Believe in God's Creation (vv. 5-9) The scoffers do not believe the truth of God's Word. They portray God's truth as a moral fable. These false teachers purposely forget that God created the heavens and the earth. To refute their heresy, Peter reminds his readers of God's creative power. First he reminds them of how God, by His Word, rolled back the waters to create dry land (v. 5; Genesis 1:9-10). Because of the Israelites'

iniquity, God used the same waters that He rolled back to destroy the old world (2 Peter 3:6). He did not spare the old world when His people disobeyed Him (2:5), and He will not spare the current world. God has already decided the world's fate and declared it through Christ and His apostles. Jesus prophesied the world's end when He said, "The harvest is the end of the world; and the reapers are the angels. As therefore the tares [weeds] are gathered and burned in the fire; so shall it be in the end of this world" (Matthew 13:39-40). The Apostle John vividly describes the destruction of the present heavens and earth. "And I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away; and there was no more sea" (Revelation 21:1). Peter confirms their teaching, declaring that the heavens and the earth will be purified of sin by fire (2 Peter 3:7). The ungodly have a standing reservation to join in this destruction. Scoffers need to be warned that God's Word is true. They think He has forgotten His creation, so they feel that they can live any way they choose. They fail to realize that God is being patient with us. Scoffers fail to understand that because His desire is to save and not destroy, God does not measure time according to human standards. "With the Lord a day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like a day" (v. 8, NIV). God can accomplish in one day what might take a thousand years and He may take a thousand years to accomplish what He could do in one day. The filth of sin has contaminated the heavens and the earth. That is why God has decided to destroy them along with all ungodly people. This day of purifying destruction will come as surely as the Flood of Noah's time. 3. Believe God's Promise (vv. 10-13) Peter emphatically declares that "the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night" (v. 10). According to Spiros Zodhiates—a Greek American Bible scholar and author—the "day of the Lord" represents the second coming of Christ and the occasion when God will actively intervene to punish sin. The term also refers to the time immediately before the creation of the new heaven and earth (Zodhiates, 1487-88). Peter says that on this day, "the heavens shall pass away with a great noise" (v. 10). The Greek word translated "great noise" means "with a great crash." The apostle declares the earth will be burned up, and not only the earth, but all the "works that are therein." Everything that humanity has ever created, invented, or built will be utterly consumed in this "fervent heat." In view of the coming destruction, what kind of people should believers be? "We must live holy and godly lives as we look forward to the day of God and should help speed its coming" (vv. 11-12, NIV). Our values and aspirations must be centered on God and focused on the new creation. We can help bring about Christ's return by sharing the Gospel message with as many people as possible (Matthew 24:14). Our world is full of scoffers who refuse to believe the Word of God. But those who make a mockery of His truth will one day see that God is faithful to every promise He ever made. So that God can create a new heaven and earth, the heaven and earth will be destroyed. Those who are righteous will dwell with God forever in this wonderful new creation. On the other hand, the ungodly and the scoffers will spend eternity in hell (Isaiah 66:22-24). MORE LIGHT ON TEXT 2 Peter 3:1-13 1. This second epistle, beloved, I now write unto you; in both which I stir up your pure minds by way of remembrance: "Epistle" (Gk. epistole, ep-is-tol-AY) is another word for "letter." The author identifies himself in 1:1 as "Simon Peter"—the fisherman turned disciple of Jesus. Peter is notable for both his fearless proclamation of Christ as Messiah (Matthew 16:16) and his cowardly denial of Christ on the night of His crucifixion (26:69-75). In Peter's second epistle, he addresses the recipients as "beloved" (Gk. agapetos, ag-ap-ay-TOS), a term of affection used by every author of the New Testament epistles. It is impossible to know for sure if 1 Peter was the earlier epistle; many scholars speculate that there was at least one more letter that was lost to history. Peter writes to "stir up" (Gk. diegeiro, dee-eg-Iro)— a word which means "to arouse completely." In chapter 1, he made it clear that he knows he will die soon— implying that this is the last letter these Christians will receive from him (1:14). His purpose is to make sure that the recipients of the letter do not forget the things he had taught them (1:15) or become lazy in their walk with Christ (1:10). "Pure" (Gk. heilikrines, i-lik-ree-NACE) means "pertaining to being sincere, without hidden motives or pretense." 2. That ye may be mindful of the words which were spoken before by the holy prophets, and of the commandment of us the apostles of the Lord and Saviour: "Be mindful" (Gk. mnaomai, MNAH-om-ahee) means "recall, remember." The words of the apostles and prophets were first mentioned in chapter 1. The reader should understand the words of the prophets to be the Old Testament and the words of the apostles to be the

New Testament. "Apostle" (Gk. apostolos, ap-OS-tol-os) means "messenger, envoy." The Greek here reads literally "your apostles"—which probably means that some of the apostles had ministered personally to the recipients of this letter. Although there are many notable commandments in the New Testament, the "commandment of us the apostles" is the command to believe in Jesus for the forgiveness of sin (Acts 16:31) and live the holy life that Jesus requires (2 Peter 2:21). Most modern translations see the commandment as the commandment of Jesus given "through the apostles." 3. Knowing this first, that there shall come in the last days scoffers, walking after their own lusts, The last days (end times) started with the first coming of Jesus (Hebrews 1:2), which initiated all of the events that had to happen in order for the end to come. The Greek text reads literally "scoffing scoffers will come." The repetition of the word is a way of adding emphasis. A "scoffer" is someone who ridicules, mocks, or makes fun of others. "Lusts" (Gk. epithumia, ep-ee-thoo-MEE-ah) in this context is "strong desire for something forbidden." "Walking after" could also be translated "walking according to." These scoffers discard God's revelation of the correct path in His Word and instead chart a path for themselves based on their desires. 4. And saying, Where is the promise of his coming? for since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of the creation. "Where is the promise of his coming?" is a literal translation of the Greek; it may also be translated "Where is His promised coming?" The word "coming" (Gk. parousia, par-oo-SEE-ah) may also be translated "appearing," and is used frequently in the New Testament to refer to Christ's return (cf. Matthew 24:27; 1 Thessalonians 4:15). The argument advanced by these scoffers is that "all things continue"—nothing has changed "since the fathers fell asleep" (2 Peter 3:4). The "fathers" are probably the Old Testament patriarchs. To the scoffers, the thought of the world as we know it ending is laughable. 5. For this they willingly are ignorant of, that by the word of God the heavens were of old, and the earth standing out of the water and in the water: 6 Whereby the world that then was, being overflowed with water, perished: Since the scoffers refer to the earth's beginning, Peter's response to their argument also goes back to the beginning. He accuses them of being "willingly... ignorant." The Greek text here is difficult to translate, but a word-for-word rendering reads something like "it escapes them willingly." The scoffers, then, fail to note that before the days of creation, the world was covered with water (Genesis 1:2). The land on which we live came out of water by God's word alone (1:9). The world, then, "overflowed with water" and perished (2 Peter 3:6). This is a clear reference to Noah's time, in which the world flooded within 40 days. Peter's point here is this: It took only God's word to create the earth, and it took only another word from Him for that same earth to be destroyed. To scoff, then, is foolishness because God's ability to do what He promised to do depends only on His Word. This should certainly encourage believers in their suffering. It should assist all of us in being overcomers—victors instead of victims. 7. But the heavens and the earth, which are now, by the same word are kept in store, reserved unto fire against the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men. "Kept in store" (Gk. thesaurizo, thay-sow-RID-zo) means "to gather up, store up." The Greek text makes it clear that "fire" is the reason it has been stored. Peter will expand on this concept in verse 10. "Against" here means "for" or "unto." The burning by fire will not occur until the Day of Judgment. On that day, all people dead and living will be judged by Christ (1 Peter 4:5). Christians can face that day with confidence because judgment will mean vindication for the righteous (1 John 4:17)—and Christians, by faith, have the righteousness of Christ applied to their account (Romans 4:24). But Peter here focuses on the fate of the wicked. "Perdition" (Gk. apoleia, ap-Oli-a) means "destruction, annihilation, ruin." "Ungodly" (asebes, as-eb-ACE) means "impious, destitute of reverential awe towards God." The ungodly will receive the full measure of God's righteous wrath for their failure to honor Him as God (Romans 2:5). We have God's Word on this truth. 8. But, beloved, be not ignorant of this one thing, that one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day. "Be not ignorant" is the same Greek word as in the phrase "willingly ignorant" in verse 5. Peter instructs Christians to not make the same mistake as unbelievers who choose to neglect God's truth. Peter alludes to Psalm 90:4: "a thousand years in thy sight are but as yesterday." The Scriptures teach that God is eternal (Deuteronomy 33:27; Job 36:26; Isaiah 40:28)—having no beginning and no end (Psalm 90:2; 1 John 2:13; Revelation 1:4). Our concept of time is colored by the brevity of our life span. The Scriptures compare the human life span to dust and grass, which blows away and withers (Psalm 103:1516; Isaiah 40:6-7). 9 The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance. The problem is not with God, but with some people's finite, foolish perception. They forget that God is infinitely greater than they are. In their delusion, they conclude that God is too slow. Peter goes on to reveal that the reason Jesus has not yet returned is because God is "longsuffering" (Gk. makrothumeo, mak-ro-thoo-MEH-o). Makrothumeo means "to bear up under provocation without complaining, be patient." Ironically, those who accuse God of being late are themselves proving His patience. A harsh, vindictive god would soon lose patience with such insolence, but the God of heaven and earth does not change His mind, and He continues according to His plan. His delay, if we must call it that, is for the sake of those He came to save. God's desire is that none should "perish" (Gk. apollumi, ap-OL-loo-mee). Apollumi here means "to be ruined or lost"—a reference to eternal, spiritual death. The Scriptures repeatedly reveal God's kindness to the lost and His concern even for those who are His enemies. In Ezekiel 18:23 and 33:11, we read that God takes no pleasure in the death of the wicked. In Romans 2:4 we read that God's kindness leads us to repentance. Those who use Christ's "delay" as an excuse to rebel have tragically misunderstood God's kindness. "Come to repentance" (2 Peter 3:9) is the alterna-

tive to perishing—repentance, therefore, is the way to life. "Repentance" (Gk. metanoia, met-AN-oyah) is "a change of mind, a turning around." The message of the Gospel is that all sinful people must repent—turn from their sin to God (Acts 26:20)—and put their full faith in Jesus to save them (Romans 10:9). 10 But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up. The "day of the Lord" is one of the Bible's many ways of referring to the day of Christ's Second Coming. It is also referred to as "the Day of Judgment" or simply "the Day." In the Old Testament, the Day of the Lord is portrayed as a day of wrath and destruction for the wicked and the enemies of Israel (Joel 1:15; Isaiah 13:6, 9). The New Testament also speaks of judgment on that day (Romans 2:5), and emphasizes that it will be a day of vindication, deliverance, and victory for the people of God (1 Corinthians 1:8; Philippians 1:6; 1 Thessalonians 5:9). The description of the day's arrival like a "thief in the night" is an allusion to the teaching of Jesus (2 Peter 3:10). In Matthew 24:36-42, Jesus tells His disciples that only God the Father knows the day and time of His return. Consequently, Christians must "watch" (stay awake and alert). Peter describes an unprecedented devastation that will happen on the Day of the Lord. He lists three kinds of devastation: the heavens passing away with a great noise, the elements melting, and the earth (along with the works thereon) burning up. Other passages in both the Old and New Testaments refer to the "passing away" of the created universe (cf. Matthew 24:35; Revelation 21:1), but Peter's account here is perhaps the most vivid in all of Scripture. The Greek verb phrase that describes the "melting" of the elements could be translated literally "the elements being burned up will be dissolved." The "elements" (Gk. stoicheion, stoy-KHI-on) could refer to either the material building blocks of the physical universe or the heavenly bodies. The best, most accurate Greek manuscripts do not contain the verb "burned up"; instead we find the verb heurisko (hyoo-RIS-ko), which means "find out, discover." The most likely meaning of the final phrase of this verse is that the earth and everything done in it will be exposed and laid bare. As Jesus said in Matthew 10:26, "There is nothing covered, that shall not be revealed; and hid, that shall not be known." The passing away of the created universe should be understood as a dramatic purging and renewal, not obliteration (see comments on 2 Peter 3:13). Peter's language, while vividly describing a real future event, is obviously figurative and is not intended to be a precise, technical description of the last days. 11 Seeing then that all these things shall be dissolved, what manner of persons ought ye to be in all holy conversation and godliness, 12 Looking for and hasting unto the coming of the day of God, wherein the heavens being on fire shall be dissolved, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat? The verb "dissolved" (Gk. luo, LOO-o) is the same word used in verse 10 to describe the melting of the elements. It means "to loose, release, dissolve, abolish, or destroy." "All these things" means literally "everything." Christians are to live in the awareness that everything we own or accumulate on earth will someday pass away. The only things that will have eternal value are the things we did to serve the Lord (cf. 1 Corinthians 3:13-15). Furthermore, the Day of the Lord also means the revelation of all that has been done—good or evil (see comments on 2 Peter 3:10). To the pagan mind, knowledge that the end is coming is likely to produce an "eat and drink, for tomorrow we die" mentality of indulgence and excess (cf. Isaiah 22:13). For the Christian, knowledge of the impending end should produce the opposite effect. "Holy" means "sacred, set apart to God." "Conversation" (Gk. anastrophe, an-as-trof-AY) means "manner of life, conduct." "Godliness" is "piety" or "reverence toward God." The Christian's reverent life is due to his or her eager expectation of the Day of the Lord. The Greek word for "looking for" is a compound of the words "toward" and "to watch." The Christian who understands the full significance of the Day of the Lord will look forward to it with eager anticipation. "Hasting" (Gk. speudo, SPYOO-do) means "to cause something to happen or come into being by exercising special effort." Jesus taught us that we can hasten His coming by praying for the coming of His kingdom (Matthew 6:10) and by spreading the Gospel to all peoples (24:14). The terms and concepts used in the description of the earth's destruction in 2 Peter 3:12 have been repeated from verse 10. Peter is emphasizing the nearness and finality of the last days and urging us to long for our eternal home (Hebrews 11:13-16; 1 Peter 1:17). 13 Nevertheless we, according to his promise, look for new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness. The new heavens and new earth (promised in Isaiah 65:17) will be perfect because all traces and effects of sin will be completely wiped out. Satan and his demons will be thrown into hell and no unrighteous person will gain admittance to the new heavens and new earth (1 Corinthians 6:9-10; Revelation 21:8). "Dwelleth" (Gk. katoikeo, kat-oy-KEH-o) means "reside, inhabit." It denotes permanent residency. Another Greek word (paroikeo, par-oy-KEH-o) is used in the New Testament to denote temporary residency. This world as we know it (under God's curse and the contaminating impact of sin) is only our temporary home; the new heavens and new earth are our permanent home. The Greek word kainos (kahee-NOS) is used here for "new." Kainos is used in the New Testament to refer to newness that contrasts with the obsolete— the New Covenant, for example. The word neos (NEH-os), on the other hand, is used to refer to something in the early stages of life—for instance "younger" people in 1 Peter 5:5. Peter's choice of kainos is consistent with the message of the rest of the Scriptures: the new heavens and new earth will be a renewal, not a replacement, of God's good Creation. God is not revealed as one who throws His handiwork away; instead, He makes all things new (Revelation 21:5). In fact, the creation longs for its day of redemption from sin just as God's people long for theirs (Romans 8:22-23). Thus, even though suffering is a part of Christian living, believers have a hope and that hope is in Christ Jesus.

Food For Thought Strategic Leadership Corner By RTP Contributing Writer Dr. Joyce Harrell, DMin, Strategic Leadership Director Mt. Tabor Missionary Baptist Church Rev. Ticey Brown, Pastor

The end of the year is approaching, and a lot of churches will be calling on their ministry leaders to come forward and give an account of what has been accomplished in the name of Jesus for the year. What will your report sound like? Some will stand proudly and give a report on how much money the ministry raised in 2009. Some will stand proudly and give a report on the number of programs and outings they had in 2009. Some will stand asking for a larger budget in

View From

2010, and some will even stand demanding to have an account of how the church spent money in 2009. Have you ever thought about what kind of questions Jesus would ask at the end of the year? Have you ever thought about what type of answers Jesus would be looking to hear if He was presiding? You are probably asking - Dr. Joyce what are you are getting at? Well I’m glad you asked. As leaders our focus, our answers and questions should be centered on those things that were important to Christ. After all we are Christians and what is important to Christ ought to be important to us. It is my earnest prayer that as we get ready to start a new year, that our focus in 2010 will be on evangelism, winning souls, encouraging and building up people – SHARING THE LOVE OF GOD, as we wait for Jesus imminent

“When he saw that he had not prevailed against him, he touched the socket of his thigh; so the socket of Jacob’s thigh was dislocated while he wrestled with him.” (Genesis 32:25 NASB). In this corner, wearing blue trunks, hailing from Long Beach, California, standing six feet two inches tall, about 240 pounds, a man euphoric about receiving a blessing. In the opposing corner, with an undefeated record, hailing from eternity, The Spirit of the Living God. My natural thought is I can take him! I can get my blessing and once I lock up with Him, I won’t let Him go until he blesses me. In the proverbial sense, isn’t this what many of us have done when we enter into the ring of opportunity with God. In fact, that may be exactly what Jacob did. He desired a blessing, but instead of a blessing, he received a dislocated hip, that in the natural, resulted in a limp. OUCH! As amazing as that sounds, I get it. Because I too walk with a limp. In II Corinthians 12th chapter, the Apostle Paul asked God to for a blessing. Being the powerful

return. My challenge to you as you get ready for your end of the year meetings is that you go and blow your Pastor’s mind. Demonstrate to your Pastor that your mind is set on spiritual things and not mundane. If you want to be upset over something, be upset because not enough souls walked down the aisle in 2009, and you want to know what can be done so it doesn’t happen again in 2010. Now that will blow his mind! Dr. Joyce is a lay-person, under the leadership of Pastor Ticey Brown, at Mt. Tabor Missionary Baptist Church, where she serves as the Strategic Leadership Director. servant, and consummate laborer in the Kingdom, I would have to imagine that Paul may have even felt he deserved a blessing, possibly even was entitled to a blessing. He may have been confident that a favorable response to this minimal request was imminent. So Paul asks in confidence (with nothing wavering). However, to his surprise and possible shock, God said no. Of course, being undaunted in his faith, Paul did the natural thing and petitioned God again. Surprisingly, God said no again. Okay, the third time is the charm. Surely, this third request would yield a far more positive response form God. Particularly since Paul possessed a stellar resume of servitude. According to Paul’s own testimony in II Corinthians 11:23-28 (KJV), he was “more in” than anyone else. Surely that fact alone should yield some degree of unmerited favor. One more appeal should definitely do it. However, once again God said no. In essence, God was saying to Paul, your blessing is your thorn (your limp). What if your limp is your blessing? What if the very thing you are praying for God to remove, is

the very thing that is keeping you in prayer? The only thing that is keeping you properly positioned? I have learned to appreciate and even value my limp. I remember reading a quote in a David Guzik commentary that says; “The Theolog y of Christianity is based on Grace. The ethics of Christianity is based on gratitude. I am so grateful for my limp. My limp keeps me faithful. My limp keeps me buffeted and patient. My limp is a constant reminder of God’s all sufficient grace. My limp is the result of my pitched, all night battle with the Lord for a blessing. And in spite of my issues, my challenges or my frustrations, I refused to let Him go. I am excited to say, I won! But my limp is evident as a result of that brawl for a blessing. I now look at my limp as my championship belt, I proudly wear around my oversized waist of faith. GOOD NEWS FROM ...... GREATER NEW UNITY B.C. Greetings to you, in the name of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, who is STILL the King of Kings, and the Lord of Lords!! It is great to be alive, yet in the land of the living, with a “reasonable” portion of our health and strength! Don’t you have SO MUCH, SO MUCH, to thank God for??? Can you sing the song?? Do you know the song?? Speaking of songs, the late Rev. Heacock, on of our Associate Ministers, may his soul rest in peace, when not trying to direct the choir or when he wasn’t hop scotching across the church, use to sing a little song, that he says he learned from the late Bishop McMurray. He sang, “Oh, Magnify the Lord, for He is worthy to be Praised....Oh, Magnify the Lord, for He is worthy to be praised....Hosanna, blessed be the Rock, Blessed be the Rock of my salvation.....he used to wear that song out..and he really used to wear us out as well....yes, Blessed be the ROCK!!!!! And speaking of blessed, we had a blessed time in the Lord all day on Sunday! Special thanks to all of our many friends, members and visitors who came out on Sunday to help us pay tribute to Sis. Norma J. Rachal on her special day. We thank all participants on the program, and we thank Rev. Haley for delivering The Gospel Message with power!! LUPUS WALK 2009 a Great SUCCESS!!! Congratulations are in order, for the Greater New Unity Baptist Church for the tremendous job that was done in contributing to the success of the ALR’s Walk for Lupus held last Saturday, Nov. 14 at the picturesque

Crescent Bay Park in Santa Monica. On a perfect sunny Southern California day, a team of 26, led by Pastor Allison, General Coordinator Sis. Arlene Andrews, and Team Captains Sis. Tiffany Allison, Sis. Josie Baxter, and Sis. Lynn Thalley showed up with lots of energy and plenty of smiles!! The route took us alongside the Santa Monica pier, where we were able to view the marvelous handiwork of God; the waters of the Pacific Ocean glistened ever so brightly under the California sun, while the surf gently lapped the sand. BIkers biked, joggers jogged, children played, and we walked for Lupus! Special thanks to the members of Greater New Unity and friends, who contributed over $450.00 to the cause. We especially want to thank Ms. Laurie Gray, Western Fundraising Coordinator of the Alliance for Lupus Research for providing such excellent Leadership to this event, and for including us and encouraging us to do our best and give our all! Our youth were outstanding, and we thank them for participating. They were: Leeah Powell, Chalon and Patience Cush, Tyler Frasier, Christina, Shanneah and Christal Welch; Jeremiah Glover, and Miss KaylaKayla!! You represented us so well, and did a great deed for those suffering from Lupus!! Happy Birthday Sis. Tiffany Allison!! First on today, Sunday, November 21, we will study the word at 9:30 am in Sunday School. Then, we will praise God with everything we have! After that, we will receive the Word of God, delivered to us from our Pastor. Finally, we will celebrate our First Lady, Sis. Tiffany Allison’s birthday

after our 10:45 am worship service in the H.P. Pavilion upstairs. Chairperson, Sis. Alice Roy invites everyone to come and share in this great celebration for our very own Sis. Tiffany. We pray that God will continue to bless her with many more years, as she faithfully and fervently goes forth in ministry! We love you Sis. Tiffany, and may God take you higher and higher in His word and in His work! Greater New Unity is a Forward Church, serving a Forward God!!! On behalf of Pastor Randy Allison and the family of Greater New Unity, we wish you and all of those you love a Happy Thanksgiving!! We know that EVERYDAY is a day of Thanksgiving. All across this city, state, and country on Thursday as we sit down to tables with foods of all kinds laid from one end to the other, and no room to put more, in the company of loved ones and friends, we must pause and remember the thousands upon thousands who have met with misfortune, and will not experience the feasts and celebrations that we will...we give thanks to God for the bounty and for the blessings...and hopefully, we won’t complain...or maybe we will STOP complaining! Greater New Unity is located at the corner of 98th and Avalon, where the power lines of the city meet the power of God; where everybody is somebody and Christ is the center of all! Our Pastor who serves with a servant’s heart is Rev. Randy Allison, and reporting is yours truly, Sis. Arlene Andrews. Until next week, don’t forget to KEEP RAISING THE PRAISE!!

God offers help for today and hope for the future. Unwavering confidence in God is our antidote for fear and loneliness. Fear is a dark shadow that envelope us and ultimately imprisons us within ourselves. Each of us has been a prisoner of fear at one time or anotherfear of rejection, misunderstanding, uncertainty, sickness, or even death. We can conquer fear by using the bright liberating light of the Lord who

brings salvation. If we want to dispel the darkness of fear, let us remember with the psalmist that “the Lord is my light and my salvation.” We often run to God when we experience difficulties. But David sought God’s guiding presence each day. When trouble came his way, he was already in God’s presence and prepared to handle any test. Believers can call to God for help at any time, but how shortsighted to call on God only when trouble comes. Many of our problems could be avoided or handled far more easily by seeking God’s help and directions beforehand. Many have had the sad experience of being forsaken by father’s or mother’s broken homes, differences of belief, drug or alcohol addictions, even psychological isolation can leave children crippled by this loss. Even

as adults, the pain may linger. God can take that place in our life, fill that void and that hurt. He can direct us to adults who may take the role of father or mother for us. His live is sufficient for all our needs. The “land of the living” simple means this life. David was obviously going through a trial, but he was confident that in this present life God would see him through. Waiting on God is not easy. Often it seems that he isn’t answering our prayers or doesn’t understand the urgency of our situation. That kind of thinking implies that God is not in control or is not fair. But God is worth waiting for. Isaiah 40:27-31 calls us to wait because often God uses time of waiting to refresh, renew and teach us. Make good use of your waiting time by discovering what God may be trying to teach you in them.

GTR. MT. SINAI M.B.C. NO. 2,’S THANKSGIVING DAY OUTREACH, IN THE CITY OF COMPTON These are days for action. This is not a time for sleeping, drifting or meandering through the Christian life; it is time to be where God wants us to be, doing what we should be doing and alongside those whom God has purposefully joined us. Too often we justify not doing what God is telling us to do today by relying on tomorrow or others. This, of course, maybe true, as there maybe another literal day in time, but that day may be one day beyond the divine opportunity God ordained for us to maximize. There is “time” and then there is God’s “time of specific

opportunity” which we must discern spiritually and within which we must maximize the special grace and favor God has granted to us. Therefore, Pastor Kalvin E. Cressel, Sr. and the Members of Gtr. Mt. Sinai M.B.C. No. 2 invite you, our hurting and homeless Brothers and Sisters to join us for our Annual Thanksgiving Day Celebration on Thursday, November 26, 2009 from 9:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. As the apostle Paul urged in Romans 13 (9b) “Love your neighbor as yourself.” (10) “Love does no harm to its neighbor.

Therefore, love is the fulfillment of the law”; (11) “And do this, understanding the present time”. In response to that divine call, we will serve a delicious dinner, minister to anyone requesting our services as well as donate clothing, personal items and food baskets. We are located at 12317 S. Wilmington Avenue (corner of 124th and Wilmington) in the great City of Compton, CA. Telephone (310) 631-0261. Rev. Kalvin E. Cressel, Sr., Pastor, Mother Sandra Taylor, Reporter

NEW COMMANDMENT MBC CELEBRATES 28 YEARS

PASTOR GRADY JONES NEW COMMANDMENT B.C.

Today, Sunday, November 22, 2009 at 4:00p.m., the congregation of New Commandment, along with our distinguished guests, will celebrate God’s amazing work at New Commandment. Won’t you come and join us? Our distinguished guests are Village Baptist Church, Rev Charles W. Harris, Pastor; Tweedy Memorial BC, Rev Matthew

Wheaton, Pastor; and, St Thomas BC, Rev Frederick Harris, Pastor-Elect. And no doubt, You, our brothers and sisters in Christ. We look forward to sharing this wonderful time of fellowship with everyone. New Commandment’s history is certainly one that is ordained by none other than our Heavenly Father. We are a modern day miracle under the leadership of Dr Rev Grady Jones, and First Lady Sis Elois Jones. We are truly blessed to have such anointed and Godfearing leaders who consistently teach that God’s way is the only and true way. Soul winning is the focal of this ministry. It’s not about prosperity but about the love of Jesus and living our lives in the manner ascribed to us through God’s Holy Word, the Bible, so that when this life is over, God along with His Son on His side will say, “well done”. Thus, our theme for this celebratory celebration is “KEPT BY THE GRACE OF GOD”, scripture text: Jude 1:24-25,

which reads, “ Now unto him that is able to keep you from falling, and to present you faultless before the presence of his glory with exceeding joy, To the only wise God our Saviour, be glory and majesty, dominion and power, both now and ever. Amen. As we celebrate this joyous time, if you need a friend or church home, New Commandment MBC is a wonderful church family. We were founded on the love of Jesus and continue in that vein 28 years later, and God willing many, many more!!! New Commandment is located at 15548 Paramount Blvd, Paramount CA 90723, one mile north of the 91 Freeway and one mile south of the 105 freeway. If there are any questions or if you need prayer, please call 562-531-7703 or 562-862-8591. God loves you and so do we! Welcome Missionary Baptist Church Celebrates Sixty Fifth Church Anniversary

REV. J.W. BROWN PASTOR

Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith: who for the joy that was set before him endure the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God. Hebrew 12:2 In March 1944, Rev. L. M. Kelley, a native from the state of Georgia migrated to Watts, CA prior to WWII. He lived on 93rd and Maie Ave. Because there were no Baptist Churches in walking distance in Watts, The Holy Spirit inspired to organize one. He envision a church where everyone would be welcomed, therefore it was named Welcome Missionary Baptist Church. Sixty five years later we are still strong in the Lord. The Pastor, Officers and Members of Welcome

BISHOP J.D. CARRINGTON FRIENDSHIP B.C.

Missionary Baptist Church would like to extend an invitation to all former members, all friends of Welcome and the entire Community, to join us as we celebrate sixty-five years of praising, worshiping and glorifying God. Truly our God has made our church one that welcomes the Holy Spirit. We thank God that He has richly blessed us in Wisdom, knowledge, understanding and a Vision to be a blessing to its members and the entire community around us. He has allowed our Pastor and the membership at large to demonstrate His awesome power and love through the spreading of the Gospel of Jesus Christ for sixty five years. Our Theme for this gala event is, “Our Church, A Stalwart

Foundation, A Challenged People, A Committed Spirit”. Hebrew 12:2. Our program committee is excited about the worship they have planned for your enjoyment and spiritual blessing. Special recognition will be bestowed to members who are eight plus years of age, and members who have continually worship at Welcome more than sixty years. Spirit filled songs will be rendered by the Welcome Church mass choir and the Friendship Church choir. We will also be blessed by Endow in a special dance ministry. We will also be blessed with the Words of God by Pastor J. W. Brown at 8:00 a.m. and Bishop J. D. Carrington, Pastor Of Friendship Baptist Church at 4:00 p.m. Our celebration will take place on Sunday, November 22, 2009. As taken from the Psalmist and the Hebrew write, O magnify the Lord with us, and let us exalt His Name together and let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another. Please come to either of these worship experiences and receive a special blessing. Our church is located at 8615 South Central Avenue, Los Angeles, California 90002. Sister Colette Durham, Program Chairperson, Rev. J. W. Brown, Pastor.

ONE FAITH FELLOWSHIP’S NUGGETS FOR THE SOUL

“HOLD ON” The dismal experience of this present life is the very best life that non-Christians will experience both now and in eter nity. They are told in Revelations 20:15- And whosoever was not found written in the Book of Life was cast into the Lake of Fire. But for the Christian, it is quite the opposite—thank you Jesus!! For Christians, this life is the worst that will be experienced both now and in eternity! We have an invitation to experience the joy of the Lord if we just “Hold On” until the end. Matthew 25:34-Then shall the King say unto them on His right hand, Come, ye blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world. Thus while non-Christians are now experiencing their best life—Christians are now experiencing our worst life! Therefore, Kingdom sisters and brothers, we must guard our hearts and souls to stay faithful to Christ until He takes us home. We can’t afford to flirt with the world, old habits, sin—anything which is against God’s Word. It is a daily watch and holding on since daily Satan is attempting to influence us to abort our eternal life with Jesus. That means we must CONTINIOUSLY be mindful of what we think, see, hear, do and go. We must the more exercise and strengthen our relationship with Jesus each day

through reading His Word, praying, meditating, listening to Gospel music and fellowshipping with other Christians. With joy we can embrace Luke 18:29 “Yes,” Jesus replied, “and I assure you, everyone who has given up house or wife or brothers or parents or children, for the sake of the Kingdom of God, v. 30-will be repaid many times over in this life, as well as receiving eternal life in the world to come.”. Rev. 21:4And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away. Even though unfortunately some persons are no longer committed to Jesus Christ; we can’t afford to compromise our commitment to Him. Proverbs 14:2Those who follow the right path fear the LORD; those who take the wrong path despise Him. Matthew 25:13Watch therefore, for ye know neither the day nor the hour wherein the Son of man cometh. Therefore, we must fight against temptation, discouragement, depression and lack of faith. All of these are enemies of our souls. 2 Peter 1:10- So, dear brothers and sisters, work hard to prove that you really are among those God has called and chosen. Doing this, you will never stumble or fall away. (KJ…give diligence to make your calling and election sure) V. 11— And God will open wide the gates

DR. TONYA LEWIS

of Heaven for you to enter into the eternal Kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. “Hold On” for as Precious Jesus promised; the endurance of commitment is well worth it in this present life and in the life to come! We must grow even the more in our relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ. Therefore, let’s commit to greater prayer time, increased study of God’s Word, serving and loving Him and each other! We won’t be sorry if we do; but we will be sorry if we don’t!! Why not join us for holiday fun at our Christmas Fellowship, Dec. 5, 2009 or for the Mexican Riviera Cruise Sept, 2010.
