METROPOLITAN MISSIONARY BAPTIST CHURCH INSTALLS PASTOR ELTON LAMAR JOHNSON

PASTOR ELTON L. JOHNSON METROPOLITAN MBC

PASTOR MICHAEL J. METTERS FAITHWAY MBC

Just as Elijah passed the mantle to Elisha, and as the promises of Moses were given to Joshua, so has Pastor Emeritus, Frank J. Hardy, passed the realm of the Metropolitan Missionary Baptist Church to the newly elected, PASTOR ELTON LAMAR JOHNSON. On Sunday, November 29, 2009, at 3:30 in the afternoon, the sanctuary will overflow with shouts of praise and thanksgiving, as we celebrate under the banner of “A Vessel of God, Leading God’s People from Vision to Victory” (Habk. 2:1-4). Our Pastor’s Pastor, Rev. Michael J. Metters & the Faith

Way family, will encourage this new, young, exuberant Pastor with a Word from on high. Pastor Albert Nicholas & the Pilgrim B.C. family, and Tim “Bishop” Brown & The Miracle Mass Choir are also among the elite list of invited guests. The vast invitees of prominent pastors and ministers, which includes Bishop L. Daniel Williams, Pastor Nathaniel Haley, Sr., and Bishop Johnny Withers, reads like a list of “who’s who” among the many great men of God who have influenced, inspired, and play an integral part in the grooming of our young Pastor.

Pastor Johnson’s resume’ references date back to his toddler and elementary years, as his grandmother, the late Lady Edna Harper, showed her family, by example, that Jesus Christ is the way. Her teachings were embedded in the heart of our pastor’s late mother, the beautiful Sis. Brenda Harper, who never ceased to pray for her son, as the enticement of the world tried to block him from accepting his destiny…..He accepted his calling in 1998, was licensed at the New Antioch B.C. by Pastor Nathaniel Haley, Sr., ordained by Pastor Michael J. Metters, served under Pastor Reginald Ridgeway, Sr. at the Manchester B.C., work diligently with the Youth & Young Adult Departments of these churches, has preached in pulpits north, east, west, and south, began Next Level Ministries in January of 2009….. We excitedly invite you to don the colors of brown & cream, as we expect a double portion of God’s anointing to fall at 4200 South Hooper in the City of the Angels. Sis. Sheila Hardy and Sis. Stephanie Jenkins, Chairpersons; Rev. Elton L. Johnson, Pastor; Next Level Communications exclusively for MMBC.

8TH ANNUAL SUPER PRAYER MEETING PILGRIM M.B.C. – DECEMBER 9, 2009 “IN DAYS LIKE THESE, WE SHOULD BE DOWN ON OUR KNEES” II Chronicles 7:14

JOY, LOVE, SUCCESS, HEALING, PEACE OF MIND, INCREASED FAITH, GOD’S IMMEASURABLE FAVOR, AND MANY OTHER BLESSINGS ABOUNDING AND OVERFLOWING, are all just a partial list (too numerous to detail here} which describes the many blessings that have been received and being tremendously enjoyed by the participants in all of the past seven Annual Super Prayer Meetings held at Pilgrim M.B.C., where Dr. Albert Nicholas is the Senior Pastor. Once again, this year, Pastor Nicholas, along with Rev. E. Roland Arevalo, Pastor of our Spanish Ministry, and the Associate Ministers, officers, and members invite you to prepare to attend this year’s powerful SUPER PRAYER MEETING service which will be hosted by the historical PILGRIM MISSIONARY BAPTIST CHURCH.

The theme for this year’s Super Prayer Meeting is: “IN DAYS LIKE THESE, WE SHOULD BE ON OUR KNEES.” Taken from II Chronicles 7:14, which states: “If my people which are called by my name would humble themselves and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from Heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land.” We are truly in need of further blessings from our Lord and Savior during such perilous times as these; and we know that prayer is the answer. The Director for this powerful Prayer Ministry at Pilgrim is Sis. Rosie Giles, who provides dedicated, faithful and untiring leadership to this ministry, together with Pastor Nicholas, are both thankful and excited to celebrate this year’s theme, and also to encourage each of you to come out and be blessed. This year’s attendance goal is 600 powerful prayer warriors of all ages – from

our youth to our senior saints, to all be together on one accord to give praises to God for His wonderful blessings, thank Him from where He has brought us, and to seek His face as He continues to lead us. We are going to bombard Heaven’s Halls with prayer, and leave with an expectancy of many future blessings as a result of the powerful anointing of the Holy Spirit’s presence. Therefore, please come expecting your blessing! What a wonderful time we will have; and you don’t want to miss your opportunity to be a part of this great time of prayer! The guest speaker for this night of prayer will be the anointed and renowned man of God, Bishop L. Daniel Williams, Pastor/Teacher of the Baptist Church of the New Covenant, in Norwalk, CA. He also serves as President of the Baptist Ministers Conference of Los Angeles and Souther n California. We look forward to him bringing a word to strengthen our faith to meet the challenges of today and to continue the important work of service to others, as unto the Lord.. YOU ARE CORDIALLY INVITED TO JOIN US ON WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 9, 2009, AT 7:00 P.M. – SUPER PRAYER MEETING AT PILGRIM M.B.C., 950 EAST STREET, LOS 45 TH ANGELES, CA. The Conference has thrived over the past twenty years, growing from a core group of 30 ministers to over 1200 participants and students.

Our Guest speaker for this momentous occasion will be none other than Dr. Frank Ray, Senior Pastor of the New Salem Missionary Baptist Church located in Memphis, Tennessee. The Inspirational Corner.....

The Process of Becoming Genesis 2:4-7 We can never become good stewards until the process of God in our lives is complete. God is always working something in us and through us (Psa. 138:8, Phil 1:6). One can see that through God’s word, he will perfect and perform his good work in us as His children. In fact the process of becoming is God molding and fashioning us to his will (Rom. 8:29, Phil. 2:13). The exploration of this text in Genesis reveals Moses’ account of “The manner of the creation.” He shows to us a summary of the creative age. Then, he describes Jehovah’s mind, Jehovah’s thinking in (5). I hasten to tell us that God was looking for a man to work his field of garden and God is looking for a man to work now. God still has fields of labor whereby he will pay those that will work. In fact, the Word declares go in to the vineyard and work and whatsoever is right I’ll pay. Jesus said, “Look on the field they are already ripe and ready for harvest.” The harvest truly is great, but the laborers are few: pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he would send forth laborers into his harvest. It is possible then to conclude that the fashioning of man was so to do God’s desire. The Bible said in Isaiah 43:21- “This people have I formed for myself they shall show forth

my praise.” Did not God want a man to till the ground (5c)? So then, God looked for one to till the ground; he formed or molded into a fashion that was pleasing. It was a process, a continuing development involving a course of completion. God completed is work. Jehovah in Gen. 2:7a was just getting started with what he would do with forming man. Many of us do not like what we are neither how we are. There is a process whereby God is working to get you and I to the place where you will serve him and not worry about other stuff (8), but it is a process. In order to help the process along God breathed into his nostrils the breath of life. God put into the man (nesh-aw-maw) divine inspiration, intellect, and spirit having the power to articulate ideas and thoughts processes. In fact, this is why when God brought the animal kingdom to Adam; Adam could readily identify them. Whatever he called them God said yes. You and I are in the process of becoming all that God formed us to be and having breathed into us. The breath in Adam is the same breath in us as Believers in Jesus, with this breath you can discern directions because of who is in you (Phil 2:13). You can tell the difference between the right paths, which you

DIRECTION OF ASPIRATION

should take. You can prosper in the things that belong to God because you and I are heirs of God and joint heir with Christ. The breath of God is God in us. After the resurrection Jesus breathed on his disciples and told them to receive ye the Holy Ghost. With the breath of God man became. Therefore, with the process of God’s work Moses tells us that, “And man became.” Man really became at this time made in the image of the triune God and after their likeness (Genesis 1:26-27). Man is at this point a living soul. He is what God breathed into him to become. What we witness in our time is the production of Satan’s interference. Satan always starts his work early. Note that as we have prior knowledge to the text, Satan deceive Eve before she and Adam became fruitful. Today, what Satan does is, he starts his process before our children and even us really get into Jesus. But thank God we are his work in progress and Satan cannot stop it. Jesus, our Lord has given his life and breathed on us with the Holy Ghost (Ephesians 4:23-24).

unto Him. The leakage comes not

“Behold, as the eyes of servants look unto the hand of their so much through trouble on the masters ... so our eyes wait upon the Lord our God” (Psa. outside as in the imagination; when 123:2).

This verse is a description of entire reliance upon God. Just as the eyes of the servant are riveted on his master, so our eyes are up unto

God and our knowledge of His countenance is gained (cf. Isaiah 53:1, R.V.). Spiritual leakage begins when we cease to lift up our eyes

we begin to say - “I expect I have been stretching myself a bit too much, standing on tiptoe and trying to look like God instead of being an ordinary humble person.” We have to realize that no effort can be too high. For instance, you came to a crisis when you made a stand for God and had the witness of the Spirit that all was right, but the weeks have gone by, and the years maybe, and you are slowly coming to the conclusion - “Well, after all, was I not a bit too pretentious? Was I not taking a stand a bit too high?” Your rational friends come and say Don’t be a fool, we knew when you talked about this spiritual awakening, that it was a passing impulse, you can’t keep up the strain, God does not expect you to. And you say - Well, I suppose I was expecting too much. It sounds humble to say it, but it means that reliance on God has gone and reliance on worldly opinion has come in. The danger is lest no longer relying on God you ignore the lifting up of your eyes to Him. Only when God brings you to a sudden halt, will you realize how you have been losing out. Whenever there is a leakage, remedy it immediately. Recognize that something has been coming between you and God, and get it readjusted at once.

IN FOCUS Lydia loved to study her family genealogy. She found it so interesting to learn about the different people in her past. Connecting with her history gave her a stronger sense of who she was on many levels. As a result of her genealogy research, Lydia discovered why she couldn't settle down. Like many of her ancestors, she shared an inherent need to be free. Lydia didn't think commitment would ever be part of her vocabulary. One thing Lydia didn't have in common with the people in her past was faith in God. She couldn't even commit to the people in her life. How could she commit to a God she couldn't even see? Joe was probably the closest to a best friend that Lydia had ever had. He was a Christian and had witnessed to Lydia on several occasions, but she was a hard case. Joe was aware of her interest in genealogies, so he challenged Lydia. Joe told her, "If you research the genealogy of Jesus and still come to the conclusion that He's not really the Messiah, then I'll never bother you about your unbelief again." Lydia accepted the challenge. Two weeks into her research, she accepted Jesus as her personal Saviour and Lord. Ironically, Lydia discovered that real freedom requires commitment. By committing her life to Jesus, she was freed from the chains of sin. Now, Lydia tells people how her love of genealogy led her to Christ. In today's study, researching the ancestry of Jesus will bless you, too, with a closer walk with Him. The People, Places, and Times Marriage. In order to understand the diverse ancestry of Jesus, it would be helpful to familiarize yourself with some of the Old Testament customs. The Hebrew people were allowed to practice polygamy although the Israelites were bent toward having only one wife. The kings of Israel were forbidden to have more than one wife, but often disobeyed God's edicts. In fact, King David and his son and predecessor to the throne, Solomon, had many wives. Thus, polygamy was the cause of many of their problems (1 Kings 3:1; 11:2). Arranged marriages were also customary. These types of unions were usually arranged by the parents. The marriage between Judah's son, Er, and Tamar was arranged by Er's friend, Hirah. Tamar was a Canaanite woman and Israelites were forbidden to marry Canaanites, but Er was not a Godfearing man (Genesis 38:1-11). Another interesting custom is that when a man died, his widow would marry the living brother (Deuteronomy 25:5-6). A son born as the result of that union would be an heir to the deceased brother. This custom was not just a suggestion but a law and the duty of a brother. Background If the book of Ruth were to be described in one word, that word would be "devotion." Widowed Naomi with her two daughters-in-law, Orpah and Ruth, were traveling back to their home in Israel. Naomi decided that it would be best for her daughters-in-law to return to their parents' home in hopes that they would marry again. At Naomi's urging, Orpah conceded, but Ruth is determined to stay with Naomi. "And Ruth said, Intreat me not to leave thee, or to return from following after thee: for whither thou goest, I will go; and where thou lodgest, I will lodge: thy people shall be my people, and thy God my God: Where thou diest, will I die, and there will I be buried: the Lord do so to me, and more also, if ought but death part thee and me" (Ruth 1:16-17). Ruth had a deep devotion to Naomi. When they returned to Bethlehem, Ruth went to gather corn left by the reapers in a field belonging to a wealthy man whose name was Boaz. Boaz inquired as to who the young lady was, and when he found out, he encouraged Ruth to continue gleaning in his field. He also instructed the young men not to touch her. Boaz told Ruth that he'd heard about her devotion to Naomi, and said that the Lord would bless her for it (2:1-12). Naomi told Ruth that Boaz was a close relative and would make a good husband for her. Naomi's Old Testament match-making skills were successful—Boaz and Ruth were married (3:4-13). Tamar and Judah, mentioned in the genealogy of Christ, were also ancestors of Ruth and Boaz (4:12). The New Testament is about the birth, life, and death of our Saviour. The Old Testament in its entirety lays the groundwork for the birth of the Messiah. It's a bridge connecting the humanness of Jesus, the son of Mary and Joseph, to the supernatural Christ the King, the Son of God. Delving into the human genealogy of Christ far surpasses the mystery of uncovering our own family ancestry. As we search name by name—from Abraham, to Boaz, to Solomon—we realize that all the pieces fit together and give us a perfect picture of Christ. IN DEPTH 1. Boaz and Ruth's Marriage (Ruth 4:13-14) According to the Law of Moses, it was forbidden for a Moabite to marry into the house of God. Moabites were idolaters and descendants of Lot. They didn't worship the God of Israel. Perhaps because Ruth had already married into the family (she was married to one of Naomi's two sons who died in Moab), the marriage between Boaz and Ruth

was permitted. The union was an answer to Boaz's prayers and was blessed by the elders and all who witnessed it (vv. 11-12). Ruth and Boaz conceived a child (v. 13). Although this child was not the son of Naomi's son, Naomi was still said to be the child's grandmother. When Naomi died, her estate would go to her grandson. His birth gave Naomi a kinsman to carry on the lineage of Elimelech. Later, he would become the father of Jesse and the grandfather of King David. Jesus, our Saviour and our kinsman, was born from this same lineage. 2. Naomi's Grandson (vv. 15-17) In this part of the Israelites' history, the people believed that if the aged married someone in their youth, the aged would benefit from the energy of the youth. It was in fact so strongly believed that when King David became old, his physicians recommended that he sleep with a young girl (1 Kings 1:1-2). In doing so, they believed David's body would absorb the health and vitality of the young one. The women in Bethlehem also believed that Naomi's grandson would revitalize her life and restore her youthfulness if she nursed him. Therefore, Naomi nursed the infant. The son of Boaz and Ruth was named Obed as suggested to Naomi by the women in their neighborhood. It was customary in those days to name a child according to his circumstances. Obed means "servant," and it's likely that Obed cared for and served Naomi in her old age. Naomi loved Obed dearly. He no doubt filled the emptiness left by the death of her husband Elimelech and her two sons. The women around her knew this and proclaimed, "There is a son born to Naomi!" (Ruth 4:17). 3. Jesus' Diverse Ancestry (Matthew 1:1-6) There were 42 generations between the life of Abraham and the birth of Jesus. So, why is it relevant to mention that Jesus was descended from both King David and Abraham, in the same breath? God made a promise to Abraham that from his lineage all the earth would be blessed (Genesis 12:3). Abraham probably assumed that God was speaking of being blessed through a son. However, God was laying the foundation for the Messiah Seed to come into the world through this lineage. Little did Abraham know that God's promise would be fulfilled some 2,000 years in the future, through the birth of His only begotten Son, Jesus Christ. Despite the vast span of time between the promise made to Abraham and its fulfillment, God was true to His word. God also made a promise to David that the Messiah would come from his seed (Psalm 89:3-4). As a descendant of King David, Jesus' rightful claim to the throne was proven. Together, the fulfillment of these promises established the truth that Jesus was the promised Messiah to all the earth. Some names are left out of the Bible's account of the genealogy of Jesus. As you will see, there is a reason for it. Ishmael, one of those excluded from the genealogical list, was the son of Abraham and the Egyptian servant, Hagar. Sarah (Abraham's wife), who was once barren, also conceived a son with Abraham. Sarah's son was named Isaac. When Ishmael was about 15 years old, Sarah witnessed him teasing Isaac. She became very angry and demanded that Abraham banish Hagar and Ishmael. Sarah did-n't want her son, Isaac, sharing an inheritance with Ishmael. Although Abraham was very upset, God told him to do as Sarah requested because Isaac was also his son and God would use Isaac's descendants for His purpose. Even though God promised that He would build a nation with Ishmael's descendants, Hagar and her son were sent away (Genesis 21:12-13). Esau, the son of Isaac, is also excluded from the genealogy of Jesus. In Old Testament times, the blessing of the birthright also pointed to Christ. Esau would have been given the birthright had Jacob not deceived him. Esau cared nothing about birthright until he lost it to Jacob. Although Jacob lied in order to acquire the birthright, he was actually the more suitable one to receive it. Esau allowed his "hunger" to overrule his future blessing of a wonderful birthright. When have you allowed your "hunger" for food or anything that pushes God out of the way to become your guide? Esau was even willing to trade his birthright for a bowl of stew (27:1-40). Jacob was a late bloomer, spiritually speaking, but he did prove to be God's man for the job. Tamar was married to the firstborn of Judah named Er. When Er died, Judah told Er's brother, Onan, to marry Tamar so that she could conceive and Er would have an heir. Onan was not willing to impregnate Tamar on behalf of his deceased brother. In God's eyes, Onan was wrong and so God killed him. Judah sent Tamar back to her parents until the time that his youngest son, Shelah, was old enough to marry her. Judah actually had no intention of allowing Shelah to marry Tamar, but it was on that pretense that she returned home. While Tamar was still with her parents, Judah's wife died. After mourning, Judah set out to supervise the shearing of his sheep in Tinmah. Someone had informed Tamar that Judah had no intention of allowing her to marry Shelah. Tamar was probably angry because Judah deceived her, and so she set out to deceive him. Tamar covered her face with a veil and sat by the road. When Judah passed by, he thought that Tamar was a prostitute, so he slept with his daughter-in-law. Tamar conceived as a result of this unholy union, giving birth to twins. The twin sons of Judah and Tamar were named Perez and Zerah (Genesis 38). While Matthew 1:1 establishes Christ on the throne,

verse 3 verifies Christ's humanness. We all have something or someone in our ancestry that we would rather leave out. Jesus' ancestry is no different. His ancestry includes all kinds of people, including great leaders and repentant harlots. Tracing Jesus' ancestry to the book of Joshua, we are introduced to Rahab, the prostitute. She hid the two Israelite spies from local authorities. She recognized the God of Israel as the one true God (Joshua 2:11) and begged the spies to spare the lives of her and her family. The spies instructed Rahab to hang a scarlet rope from her window and then their lives would be spared. Later, Rahab became the mother of Boaz who we read about in the book of Ruth. Among others listed in the Matthew passage are Amminadab of the tribe of Judah (v. 4). He had a son named Nahshon and a daughter named Elisheba. Nahshon was the leader of the tribe of Judah (Numbers 2:3). Elisheba was the wife of Aaron. This is the same Aaron who, with Moses, was instructed by God to lead His people out of Egypt. As we look further into Jesus' lineage, we find that God sent Samuel to Bethlehem to find a man named Jesse. God would choose one of Jesse's sons to be the new king. Samuel was instructed to perform the purification rite on Jesse and his sons and to then invite them to the sacrifice. One by one, Jesse's sons stepped forward, but God didn't choose any of them. Samuel asked Jesse if these were all of his sons. Jesse told him that his youngest son was in the field tending the sheep. Samuel instructed Jesse to send for his youngest son. When David returned from tending the sheep, the Lord told Samuel that David was indeed His choice for king. So Samuel anointed David with olive oil and then returned to Ramah (1 Samuel 16:113). King David loved the Lord, and the Lord used David to accomplish many great things. However, King David was far from perfect. A son was conceived from an adulterous affair that he had with Bathsheba, the wife of Uriah (2 Samuel 11:2-5). As though that wasn't bad enough, King David instructed Joab to set Uriah up in battle so that he would be killed (vv. 14-17). God was highly displeased with King David and vowed to punish him for the wrong he had done. The Lord caused the infant son of King David and Bathsheba to become sick and die. But God also forgave David for the sins he committed. King David and Bathsheba conceived another son. Their son was named Solomon, the wisest man that ever lived (2 Samuel 12:24). The passage from Matthew gives us a glimpse at the interesting, impressive, and colorful lineage of Jesus Christ, the Saviour of the world. MORE LIGHT ON TEXT Ruth 4:13-17 13. So Boaz took Ruth, and she was his wife: and when he went in unto her, the Lord gave her conception, and she bare a son. The introductory particle "so" can be translated "in accordance with this," referring to the preceding events or what had been agreed earlier on. The Hebrew verb laqach (law-KAKH) means "to take or to marry." The phrase "so Boaz took Ruth and she became his wife" is an important transitional expression. It concludes what has immediately preceded (4:112) and introduces Ruth's conception, the child's birth, and the response of the neighboring women to Naomi (vv. 13-17). In a few words, the narrator summarizes the marriage life of Boaz and Ruth. It is clear that marriage is not the essential element of the narration. The emphasis is on the child. The expression "he went in into her" is a Hebrew euphemism for sexual relations (see Genesis 16:2; 30:3; 38:8; Deuteronomy 22:13; 2 Samuel 16:21). "The Lord gave her conception" and she gave birth to a son (Ruth 4:13). The birth of the child contrasts strikingly with the years of death and barrenness described in chapter 1. The Bible often attributes fertility to God as well as barrenness (see Genesis 21:1-2; 29:31; 30:2, 22; 1 Samuel 1:6; Luke 1:57). 14. And the women said unto Naomi, Blessed be the Lord, which hath not left thee this day without a kinsman, that his name may be famous in Israel. The women of the town of Bethlehem (see Ruth 1:19) are pleased at the birth of the child. They ascribe what has happened to the hand of the Lord. He deserves to be praised for what He has done for Naomi. He has not left her without a next of kin (or a redeemer). The redeemer was not Boaz, but the son just born. The phrase "near kinsman" was used of Boaz and a close relative in 3:12. Now it is applied to the newborn. Naomi's grandson would take away the reproach of childlessness from her and comfort her. The phrase "his name may be famous" (Heb. qara', kaw-RAW) means literally "let his name be named, announced, or proclaimed." It expresses a blessing upon the child and can be translated "may he acquire fame in Israel" or "may he become famous in Israel" (4:14). 15. And he shall be unto thee a restorer of thy life, and a nourisher of thine old age: for thy daughter in law, which loveth thee, which is better to thee than seven sons, hath born him. The child will bring much happiness to Naomi. By bringing restoration and nourishment into her life, he will mean much to her. Naomi has hope for the future and the prospect of the permanent continuance of her family. The word "restorer" (Heb. shuwb shoob) means "one who has returned." The child will return Naomi back to life or renew her life. Ruth's love for Naomi is obvious to everyone. She had left her family, her home, and her gods (see chapter 1) out of love for Naomi and has now given her a grandchild. She is "better to thee than seven sons," meaning "she has done more for you than many sons" (Ruth 4:15). 16. And Naomi took the child, and laid it in her bosom, and became nurse unto it. Naomi held the child close to her as a sign of adoption. This probably refers to the rite of adoption practiced in Israel (see Genesis 30:3-13; 48:5; 50:23). She became the boy's "nurse" (Heb. 'aman, aw-MAHN), which means "a mother" or "guardian" (cp. Numbers 11:12). The same term is used in 2 Kings 10:1, 5 and is translated as "guardian" in the New Living Translation, meaning "legal guardian." Naomi became the legal guardian of the boy. 17. And the women her neighbours gave it a name, saying, There is a son born to Naomi; and they called his name Obed: he is the father of Jesse, the father of David. The women of the town of Bethlehem (or of the neighborhood) named the boy "Obed." "Obed" (Heb. `Owbed, o-BADE) means "the serving one" or "the servant" (implying of Jehovah). He would serve his grandmother by taking care of her and causing her to rejoice. Beyond his grandmother, he would serve the Lord by being consecrated to Him.

The last words of verse 17 show the purpose which the author kept in mind in writing down these events: to show that the boy was the grandfather of Israel's greatest king, David. He was the ancestor of Jesus (Matthew 1:1, 5). Matthew 1:1-6 The Greek phrase biblos genesis (BIB-los GHEN-esis), synonymous with the Hebrew cepher towlªdah (SEEfer to-led-AW), means literally "book/scroll of origin," "book/scroll of generations," or "book/scroll of beginning" (see Genesis 2:4a; 5:1; cp. Matthew 1:18; Luke 1:14; 3:23ff.). The phrase may indicate that the advent of Jesus inaugurates a new era for humanity. This is the book of origin of Jesus Christ. "Jesus," in Hebrew "Jehoshua," means "Jehovah is Saviour." "Christ," in Hebrew "Messiah" (mashiyach, mawSHEE-akh; see also John 1:41; 4:25) means "anointed." In the Old Testament, this name is frequently applied to kings and priests, and sometimes to prophets. They were anointed with oil, a symbol of the Holy Spirit (Leviticus 4:3, 5, 16; 1 Samuel 24:6; 1 Kings 19:16; Psalm 2:2; 105:15; Isaiah 45:1. Jesus Christ fulfilled the three functions of king, priest, and prophet in His person. His is the "Anointed of the Lord." Jesus was "the son of David, the son of Abraham" (Matthew 1:1). David and Abraham are the two most important names in the genealogy of Jesus. David's name shows that Jesus is of royal descent and the Messiah (see 9:27; Acts 2:30). Jews consider "son of David" as a messianic title (Isaiah 9:7). He is the Messiah. Abraham's name listed in Matthew 1:1-2, 17 points to Jesus' Jewish origin (Genesis 22:18). He is a true Jew. His roots go back to Abraham in whom the promises of God are fulfilled. In verse 1, Matthew shows that his interest is to present Jesus as the Messiah directly descended from the royal house of David and the seed of the patriarch Abraham, to whom the divine promises were first given. 2. Abraham begat Isaac; and Isaac begat Jacob; and Jacob begat Judas and his brethren; The verb "begat" (Gk. gennao, ghen-NAH-o) is linked with the transfer of parents' physical likeness or other similarities to their sons and daughters by natural birth (by blood) or by adoption. It expresses the conformity of a child to his or her father or mother (Genesis 1:26; 5:1-3, 10). The phrase "and his brethren" indicates that of several possible ancestors Judas (or "Judah," NIV) alone was chosen (Matthew 1:2; Genesis 49:10). Also, the ancestors' list is not an exhaustive inventory of the family tree of Jesus. 3. And Judas begat Phares and Zara of Thamar; and Phares begat Esrom; and Esrom begat Aram; The Greek version of the New and Old Testament uses "Phares" and "Zara," but in Hebrew the names are "Perez," which means "breaking out" and "Zerah," meaning "scarlet" or "brightness" (see Genesis 38:29; Ruth 4:12, 18; 1 Chronicles 2:4-6). 4. And Aram begat Aminadab; and Aminadab begat Naasson; and Naasson begat Salmon; 5. And Salmon begat Booz of Rachab; and Booz begat Obed of Ruth; and Obed begat Jesse; The majority opinion is that "Rachab" is probably the Rahab of Joshua 2, the woman who lied to save the spy mission to Jericho. Her inclusion in the list of Jesus' ancestors, along with the others that Matthew provides, is not meant to be exhaustive. In these first 17 verses from Matthew, we are given the names of 46 people whose lifetimes cover 2,000 years. Understandably, there are gaps between some of the names. 6 And Jesse begat David the king; and David the king begat Solomon of her that had been the wife of Urias; The addition "the king" (Gk. basileus, bas-ilYOOCE) is to emphasize the importance of David in the record of Jesus' ancestors (see vv. 1, 17). A curious characteristic of the list of Jesus' ancestors is the mention of four women: Tamar (v. 3), Rahab (v. 5; Hebrews 11:31; James 2:25), Ruth (Matthew 1:5), and the wife of Uriah (v. 6). Women's names normally do not appear in Jewish genealogies. Sometimes the mother may be named alongside the father, as in 1 Chronicles 1:32; 2:17-21, 24,26. None of these women seems to have a Jewish origin: Tamar and Bathsheba were adulteresses, Rahab was a prostitute, and Ruth an idolatress (Genesis 38:11, 13ff; Joshua 2:1; 2 Samuel 11:3; Ruth 1:4). Their lives were not above reproach. They all found grace in the eyes of the Lord and became part of His plan for the salvation of the whole world. Their lives are lessons about the universality of the Gospel and of the grace of God toward humankind.

LATE DR. H. P. RACHAL

Food For Thought Strategic Leadership Corner By RTP Contributing Writer Dr. Joyce Harrell, DMin, Strategic Leadership Director Mt. Tabor Missionary Baptist Church Rev. Ticey Brown, Pastor

As we begin a new year, it’s important as leaders that we make sure we are in line with the prerequisites of the Word of God and we must be open to instruction and direction from the Holy Spirit. The following is a check off list that we need to follow in order to be effective leaders in 2010. 1. Regularly attends Worship Services and Sunday School. 2. Must consistently tithe. 3. Must be a joy giver.

4. Must attend Bible study and prayer service. 5. Consistently supports the pastor, a. spiritually i. praying for him ii. submits to his authority b. financially i. Those who preach the gospel should live from the gospel (1 Cor. 9:14) 6. Attends leadership training. 7. Has a daily quiet time alone with God every day 8. Consistently seek to share my faith with others. One thing that has had an impact on me as I lead is the realization that people will not want to follow me, if it appears that I can’t follow the Pastor. How absurd to want to lead others, but I can’t follow the one who leads me. Following the Pastor entails more than just going where he goes, but it also

means being obedient to his instruction and honoring that which he has set in place. For example, if the pastor sets up a seminar for the Church family, leaders must do what ever it takes to attend the seminar. We must be positive role models to those we give leadership too, exemplifying the proper role of followship. Dr. Joyce is a lay-person, under the leadership of Pastor Ticey Brown, at Mt. Tabor Missionary Baptist Church, where she serves as the Strategic Leadership Director. Dr. Joyce’s mission is to develop servant-leaders and enhance ministries within the Church; she is available for workshops and seminars. Greetings in the precious name of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, who is still the King of Kings and the Lord of Lords!! What great advice the Apostle Paul had for us in Colossian 3:16. He says, “Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom”. On this past Sunday, Rev. Allison gave us a mighty, powerful, word of Christ, and if we will let it dwell, if we will apply it, we will grow in wisdom and in knowledge. To God be the glory, for letting us know that we have to lift up Holy hands....and praise Him...and magnify Him..when we are happy...when we have...when we don’t...when we are happy...when we are not...NOBODY can sing it like Lady Rose Neale..”I’ll Praise you...through the good times and bad...I’ll praise you..whether happy or sad..I’ll praise you.in all I go through, because praise is what I do...cuz I owe it all to you”. Yes, we owe all our praises

Dad to this writer, and her siblings Avis and Vincent...and Big Randy....and so, many others...so it was a double grief that so many of us suffered, that of losing a Pastor, and that of losing a surrogate parent, after having them for 34 years in your life..that was so hard..but thanks be to God for the Holy Spirit who was a comforter, and led the Greater New Unity church family through some dark and difficult days. But God is good, and the sun always shines after the rain! We are living out the great legacy that he built, and fulfilling the mandate that Christ gave, that of “reaching out into the highways and byways, and compelling men and women to be saved..” So it is with all of the love in our hearts, that we the Officers and members of Greater New Unity remember Dr. H.P. Rachal fondly, and reflect upon his 37 years of excellence in Pastoring the Greater New Unity Baptist Church. Greater New Unity is a Forward Church, serving a Forward God...we are still located on the corner of 98th and Avalon, “where the power lines of the city, meet the power of God; where everybody is somebody, and Christ is the center of all”. Our Pastor, who is saved, sanctified and filled with the Holy Ghost is Rev. Randy Allison Jr. and reporting is yours truly, SIs. Arlene Andrews. Until next week, don’t forget to KEEP RAISING THE PRAISE!!

VIEW FROM THE ROCK A Healthier Perspective Healthy Vessels, a ministry within The ROCK Christian Fellowship was created to bring awareness to the various health issues that plague our community and to promote physical well-being through educating and empowering its participants to adopt a healthier lifestyle. We believe total wellbeing not only comprises spiritual entities but also embraces the physical aspects of the mind and body. With the spiritual elements being soundly fulfilled through the teachings at The ROCK, we were able to focus on the physical needs of the community, and the Healthy Vessels Ministry was created to fill the resultant void. The present focus of Healthy Vessels is on the eradication of obesity within our community.

to HIm!! And congratulations, Lady Rose Neale, on receiving your Evangelist’s license; may you continue to grow in the wisdom and the knowledge of our Lord and Savior, and keep building up the Kingdom...much love from the Greater New Unity family! We remember the Late, Great Dr. H.P. Rachal....who went home to be with the Lord three years ago, on November 27, 2006. Though shocked, saddened, and grieved beyond words, the church family bowed in heavenly submission to our Father’s will, and bid farewell to Dr. Rachal. We were comforted by the words in Revelation 14:13, “ Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord”. Pastor Rachal was truly one-of-akind; he was a maverick; he was an innovator, an inspirer, a world traveler, a builder, an organizer, a great teacher of the BIble, a great gospel preacher. He was comical, and boy, did he have a way with words... Pastor Rachal could really sing...if he didn’t remember the words to the song, he would just add his own words, and make up a brand, new song! Some of his favorite songs..”I Stood on the Banks of Jordan One Day...Steal Away..Going Down By the River...Walk Around Heaven All Day...Battle Hymn of the Republic..I’m Still Here...and the list goes on...He baptized and led countless souls to Christ in his lifetime, and helped so many men and women whose lives were broken put the pieces back together again, through the aid of the Holy Ghost and through prayer. Personally, he was like a

Be thankful and faithful each day. It is a good thing to give thanks unto the Lord and sing praises to His name Most High. Show forth thy loving kindness in the morning and thy faithfulness every night. During

the Thanksgiving Holiday, we focus on our blessings and express our gratitude to God for them but thanks should be on our lips daily. We can never say thank you enough to our parents, leaders, and especially to God. When Thanksgiving becomes an integral part of your life, you will find that your attitude toward life will change. You will become more positive, gracious, and humble. Palm trees are known for their long life. To flourish like palm trees means to stand tall and live a long life. The cedars of Lebanon grew up to 120 feet in height and up to thirty feet in circumference, thus, they were solid, strong, and

immovable. The psalmist saw believers as upright, strong, and unmoved by the winds of circumstances. Those who place their faith firmly in God, can have this strength and vitality. Honoring God is not limited to young people who seem to have unlimited strength and energy. Even in old age, devoted believers can produce spiritual fruit. There are many faithful older people who still have a fresh outlook and can teach us from a life time of serving God. Seek old and elderly friends or relatives who can tell you about their experience with the Lord and challenge you to new heights of spiritual growth.

“Can the Lord Rebuild This” Jeremiah 18:4-8 – Mark 6:3 God does not throw us away after we have spoiled in his hands. He has the ability to reconstruct lives, that the individual person or Body of Believers might become another vessel. As vessels of the Lord many marred (spoiled) in his hands. Jesus stated, “That no man can pluck us out of his hand,” yet there are those gone wrong while there. In many cases, when we were vessels of honor we became vessels of dishonor. Indeed this subject is worthy for us to think about in all of our

minds. Can the Lord rebuild this, our lives, ministries, churches, broken hearts and such circumstance as we have? Certainly the word rebuild alone allows one to know somewhere along the line lives, ministries, churches, etc. were once built, but something happened. The writing of Isaiah suggests to us “All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way.” For some of us, we have Continued on Page 7

ONE FAITH FELLOWSHIP’S NUGGETS FOR THE SOUL

“DO YOU?” Do you want to survive naturally, spiritually, physically and emotionally? Do you want to walk in confidence and faith? Do you want to possess a pressingforward-no-matter-what attitude? Well, if your respond is yes, there are 3 facts which must be settled in your heart and spirit. These facts contributed to Jesus’ successfully living and completing His Mission and will be the key to your success. One verse, 23 powerful words! St. John 13: 3NLT- Jesus knew that the Father had given Him authority over everything and that He had come from God and would return to God. 1 st Fact-Jesus knew that the Father had given Him authority over everything. What can possible stop one that has been given authority over everything? Everything is everything and nothing is excluded! When we “know and believe” that God has before-hand prepared us by giving us His authority over what ever the gates of hell will attempt to prevail or conquer us with, then we can go forward in assurance, knowing that our defeat will not be so! This applies to all things in our minds, our ministries, on our jobs, in our homes, our health, our finances, relationships, IN EVERYTHING WHICH CONCERNS US!! Our challenge is choosing to believe and to walk in that authority! 2nd Fact-Jesus knew where He came from and who He belonged to. No matter what the response would be to

end, that after He completed His mission on earth that He would go and be with God! If that is not an incentive for us to complete our purpose and mission here on earth, nothing will motivate us!!! True authority, true faith, true courage is when we can boldly look in the face of those challenges, whatever they are which seems to have the greater power over us. Those challenges which really could discourage or destroy us, if not, “But God” intervening, if not, “But God” already equipping us for the fight, if not, “But God” being the greater power in our lives rather than Satan. The question is, DO YOU WANT TO COMPLETE YOUR MISSION? Why not join us for holiday fun at our Christmas Fellowship, Dec. 5, 2009 or for the Mexican Riviera Cruise Sept, 2010. “T heLift” “TheLift”

Praise the Lord, Everybody! Saturday, November 21, 2009, the Sanctuary Choir of Love Lifted Me Missionary Baptist Church had our Annual Fall Musical. The theme this year was “Jesus Promised He’ll Take Care of Me” James 1:12. The service started with the choir making a spectacular entrance. The choir wore black, with green and black accents. Not only did the choir members look great, they delivered a worship experience unlike any other. The highlights of the evening, began with the welcome and ending with the thank you, each choir member that participated on program started their short talk by reciting the scripture. Another highlight of the evening was when we crowned Mr. Love Lifted Me and Mrs. Love Lifted Me Choir representatives. The titles were given to the brother and sister in the choir that had the most guest present at the musical. There was a lot of excitement in the air at the end of the service, when choir members were allowed to stand and have their guest stand and be counted. Members of “The Life” even tried to be counted as guest more than once, because

His question in Matthew 16:13”Who do people say that the Son of Man is?”, Jesus knew who He was, whose He was, and from whence He had come. He knew that He did not just evolve from within His own self and appear. He wasn’t a piece of clay lumped together and thrown into orbit to become whatever would manifest. He came from God and was in the mind of God all alone. Neither have we just been thrown together, for we are told in Genesis 1:26- NLT- Then God said, “Let us make people in our image, to be like ourselves. Psalm 100:3—KJKnow ye that the LORD He [is] God: [it is] He [that] hath made us, and not we ourselves; [we are] His people, and the sheep of His pasture.3rd FactJesus would return back to God after He completed His mission. No, He would not be a cast away or would rot in a grave or be left in the hands of those who would rise up against Him and even “kill” Him. Jesus knew that just as God had preserved Him to come to earth with a mission, so would God preserve Him to return to Him after completing His mission. As Christians, we have been sent to earth with a mission. What we might endure from satisfying and completing our mission may greatly cost us including even our lives. But if we know that whether we live or die, that God is in charge of our lives; then just as these facts contributed to Jesus’ successfully living and completing His Mission; so will be the conclusion of our lives and missions. Jesus knew that in the

place the right people in my life for encouragment and spiritual growth at the right time. Still I rise. I know for a fact satan, you’re pissed off right now because of the renewing of my mind, body, soul and spirit. You mad because I rather serve God or die trying than to ser ve you. You mad because God chose me as a vessel of His glory and you lost your chance to be in the kingdom

because of your arrogance & pride. You mad because God is building up what I allowed you to destroy. God never said that you will not cease to form weapons against me, God made me a promise that they shall not propsper. Still I rise. I declare that satan has no power over me, my children and my family. I plead the blood of Jesus over my life, my children lives and

my family and ask God to remove any inflictions, family curses, yokes, shackles, chains and unneccessary burdens placed on me, my children and my family and cast them into the lake of fire. God’s promise is true and shall never come back void and so is the the blood of the Lamb and the Spirit of God that flows in me. I’ve earned my robe dipped in the blood of Christ and my place

Can the Lord Rebuild This lost the cutting edge. The life we once led in Christ is not what it once was. Can we be honest about it? When I look at Jeremiah (18:6) what I see is that as God’s children we are under the absolute power of God. He is the potter. If then this is so, we can be no more than what the Potter makes us to be (Philippians 2:13). I would that the Church pay attention to the fact, that if we never allow God to work in us, we would simply waste away, and lie helpless with the flux of circumstance. We are God’s clay and if there is any usefulness, it is because God worked in us both to will and to do of His good pleasure. As the potter had purpose for the clay, God has purpose for us. In the text, Jeremiah was to hear God’s word through

his going to the potter’s house. He finds the potter working. He has a vessel (Church) on the wheel, which he was making, but in its process it spoiled in his hands. He reworks it, as it seems good to him. He sees the need to do something different. The something different reveals that God has creative thoughts concerning the marred vessel. Though at the first it failed (it marred — it fails into ruins, corruptness, it became spoiled). God does not discard (throw away) the clay, but makes it another vessel (God make me over). The something different is a good work of God. In the text we see God working both to will and to do of his good pleasure. In Genesis, when God saw what he’d done the Word said, “And God saw that it was good.” He that begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ. God’s determination is to ensure that we look like Jesus (Romans 8:29).

This, another vessel he will perfect, rework, or reconstruct. It is the same clay, just a different working (Psalm 138:7-8). I believe God is giving us another chance. (When God makes us over) God has creative thoughts about making us over. He said, “As seemed good to the potter (God) to make it (4c). We must trust God in making us over. Though this is God’s doing yet, we can become greatly challenged by his working and not always understand his method (Jeremiah 29:11, Psalm 139:17-18). God determines His action according to the conduct of man (7-8). A change on man’s part from rebellion to penitence will be met with a change on God’s heart from wrath to mercy. God reworks our lives because of sin (this was the spoiling of our souls). Isaiah’s cry was (Isaiah 64:67). In verse (8) the people spoke out, “Lord only you can help our

situation.” If that is right, then we must let God reshape, rebuild, and reconstruct our lives, hearts, ministries, the church . . . because we belong to God we have no choice but to be put on the potter’s wheel. I just do not want you to forget whose hand you are in, nor whose foot is spinning the wheel. Mark 6:3 — “Is not this the carpenter?” Yes, this is the builder and re-builder of our lives. Jesus is willing to give us a fresh start. The subject’s question is, “Can the Lord rebuild this?” Yes, only when we act on this “2 Chron 7:14.” Can God rebuild this? Yes, Hosea 6:1 because of sin — discipline. Can the Lord rebuild this? Yes, if you accept his invitation “Come now and let us reason together.” My brothers and sisters God can rebuild the torn up lives of sin. There was a change in Paul’s life on the road to Damascus when the light from heaven shone bright as the noon- day sun. The woman at the

well life changed after she had a little talk with Jesus. A man born blind began to see when Jesus put clay in his eyes and told him to go wash, and his healing met him at the point of his obedience, and his testimony was, “I was blind but now I see.” Wise men came looking for Jesus and when they found him their path of life was changed in a dream.
