New Study Shows Need, Demand for Legal Services By Working Americans and Families Study Identifies Cost and Confusion as Barriers to Getting Needed Legal Help

LOS ANGELES, Nov. 27, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- A new nationwide study released today by LegalShield shows that working Americans and their families face a broad array of legal issues daily but only infrequently seek out help due to the cost, confusion and hassle of dealing with the legal system. Even for serious legal events such as divorce, IRS audits, DWI/DUI arrests, real

estate purchase, identity theft, or the death of a spouse without a will, an alarming number of Americans are forgoing the legal help they need to protect themselves and their families. The survey shows 57 million of full-time working Americans experienced at least one significant legal event in the past 12 months, but only 60 percent of those who experienced such an event actually sought

out the services of a lawyer to help them. The rest said they were “hesitant” or “dread” calling a lawyer because they are too hard to find, cost too much and are “difficult” and “intimidating” to work with. “Our research shows what we’ve known intuitively for a long time – many Americans don’t believe they can get the legal help they need to protect themselves and their families,”

said Rip Mason, CEO of LegalShield. “Too many people believe they have to go at it alone and hope for the best when it comes to dealing with all but the most serious legal issues. Fortunately, that’s not the case. Americans just need to become more aware of the options – such as a LeContinued On Page 3

galShield plan – that guarantees they have access to help from qualified attorneys no matter how serious or trivial the issue.” The survey findings show that when barriers to access and cost are removed or reduced, Americans are more likely seek out the counsel of an attorney. Ninety-one percent of respondents said they would seek the help of a lawyer for even the most trivial issue – such as the review of a rental agreement – if their services were easier to access and more affordable. Two-thirds of respondents said they found their lawyer randomly online or through some sort of advertising and had little information about their qualifications or experience. They also said they paid an average of $284 an hour for the services of a lawyer. “It’s not that Ameri-

can’s don’t believe that they need legal help, they’re just not sure that the benefit outweighs the cost or the hassle,” Mason said. “That why it’s important to remove the negative cost/ benefit assumption from the equation. With LegalShield, members pay as little as $17 a month to get unlimited access to dedicated accomplished law firms who are staffed with experienced lawyers specializing in the areas of law that impact American families the most.” Despite the benefits of legal plans such as LegalShield, only 10 percent of respondents said they are covered by any sort of legal service program. “More and more employers are looking at legal plans as part of their voluntary benefits package. They see it as a way to address absenteeism associated with the legal problem employees experience in their

The survey also shows that employees who were covered by a legal protection plan are happier, have greater peace of mind and are more focused on their work. Methodology This study of full-time employees in the U.S. was conducted over the Internet. A national probability sample of males and females aged 18 to 64 was drawn from American Consumer Opinion® Online, Decision Analyst’s worldwide panel of over eight million consumers. The sample was balanced by geography and selected demographics, such as gender, age, ethnicity, and household income. Panelists were invited by email to the screening survey, and those employed full-time were invited to Decision Analyst’s DAISurvey™ website to participate in the study. ONE FAITH FELLOWSHIP’S NUGGETS FOR THE SOUL DADDY WILL HANDLE “THEM”!! We are quick to form certain conclusions of ANYONE who declares that they never get upset, angry or mad with others. We KNOW THAT IS NOT TRUE since that is impossible when dealing with anyone other than our self! There are many ways in which we offend people that we may or may not be aware. We offend through our words, expressions, misunderstood actions or misinformed experiences. There are deliberate times when without shame or regard we intentionally strike out at others, with the intent to wound them physically, emotionally or spiritually.

We ignore the reality of consequences and negative reactions that such actions WILL USHER INTO OUR OWN LIVES. We even disregard one another’s well -being and spirit by choosing to ignore Proverbs 18:14-The human spirit can endure a sick body, but who can bear a crushed spirit? NLT (KJ- a wounded spirit). This is why we can’t allow ourselves to become consumed with being offended, mistreated or misunderstood. It is not physically or spiritually healthy for either party involved. Yes, we have been offended! Yes, people have done evil and mean things to us. Yes, offensive

words and curses have been spoken to us! Yes, it is unfortunately true that people have become so self-centered that they are quick to disregard how their actions or words may offend others. Because we

are slow to or don’t react negatively to the offenses done to us, many times people mistake our meekness as weakness. However, when we have given our lives to Jesus Christ and have agreed to follow in His footsteps we will not be quick to defend ourselves; because we realize that Daddy-God is looking and booking and will deal with us accordingly to our choices or decisions. Through being in relationship with the Lord and learning His heart through His Word, we find that it is TRULY IMPORTANT THAT WE CONDUCT OUR THOUGHTS AND ACTIONS ACCORDING TO WHAT IS

PLEASING TO GOD, FOR THEN WE CAN HAVE THE ASSURANCE OF DADDYGOD’S PROMISE IN Proverbs 20:22-- Don’t say, “I will get even for this wrong.” Wait for the LORD to handle the matter. (NLT) From various Bible Scholars we note: “God’s awarding to everyone according to His works, is the true check to the spirit of vindictiveness.” (Barnes) “Judgment is His, and His judgments are sure. We were privileged to have her bless us minister’s wives during the service.” Cedar Grove was filled to capacity with the members of the various churches who were invited among which were True Way MBC, The Baptist Church of the New Covenant, and Greater Mt. Sinai MBC. The instillation service was truly a celebration demonstrated by loud cheers for the new Pastor along with moving selections from the choir and heartfelt remarks from supporters. When asked about his rise as Pastor of Cedar Grove, Pastor Bell had this to say, “The scripture says the steps of a

ing diligently under the power of the Holy Ghost for the past 6 years and going strong is our very own, Pastor Randy Allison Jr., who God will hopefully see fit to bless him to see another birthday this coming week!! Happy Birthday Pastor Allison, we love you and God loves you too! Thank you for being an humble and strong leader and a Man of God with INTEGRITY, and we pray that God will continue to preserve, strengthen you and keep you in His will! Reporting has been yours truly, Sis. Arlene Andrews, and until next week, don’t forget to keep RAISING THE PRAISE!!! good man are ordered by God. This journey was ordained, predestined before the beginning of time, it was set in motion by the will the word and the way of God. To God be the glory for the things that He has done and He is doing and yet will continue to do in the lives of all of His servants who will allow Him to be Lord and Master.” Pastor Bell’s vision for Cedar Grove includes Developing and training in the different auxiliaries and adding more auxiliaries. He says, “I want people to know what evangelism is, I want to teach them how to invest in kingdom building, to learn how to witness and know how to respond to those who question your God. I want to involve people in bible study. We don’t know what we know because we don’t study.” Pastor Bell encourages his member to develop a prayer life. “We need to know how to pray and establish a communion with GOD.” One of the most pertinent lessons Pastor Bell wants to teach is knowing how to forgive and heal. He uses the Philippians 3:13, “Forgetting those things which are behind me, pressing on toward the mark for the prize …” Pastor Bell says, “We all need to learn how to forgive in the true sense … when you’ve been wronged, forgiveness takes root when you can look at that person and not charge it to their account or be upset. In Romans 3:10 the bible says, ‘There is none that is righteous, no not one.” We at ESMBC are proud of Dr. W.M. Brent Sr.’s legacy and are excited to see what Pastor Bell and Cedar Grove have in store.

LIVE IN THE LIGHT

John 1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 The same was in the beginning with God. 3 All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made. 4 In him was life; and the life was the light of men. 5 And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not. Ephesians 5:1 Be ye therefore followers of God, as dear

children; 2 And walk in love, as Christ also hath loved us, and hath given himself for us an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweetsmelling savour. 5:6 Let no man deceive you with vain words: for because of these things cometh the wrath of God upon the children of disobedience. 7 Be not ye therefore partakers with them. 8 For ye were sometimes darkness, but now are ye light in the Lord: walk as children of light: 9 (For the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness and righteousness and truth;) 10 Proving what is acceptable unto the Lord. 11 And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them. 12 For it is a shame even to speak of those things which are done of them in secret. 13 But all things that are reproved are made manifest by the light: for whatsoever doth make manifest is light. 14 Wherefore he saith, Awake thou that sleepest, and arise from the dead, and Christ shall give thee light.

IN FOCUS Julia prayed every morning for the community college students she taught. Some had so many problems in their lives that their classwork suffered. They’d come in late, text during lectures, miss assignments and have overall nasty attitudes. However Julia would continue to pray. She tried to always share Christ with her students by remaining positive and encouraging them at every step. Some days, the students were receptive. However, other times, they rejected everything she said. As Julia sat in her office after class, she began to sink into a feeling of defeat. She was deep in thought when Marcus, a former student, knocked. “Oh, Marcus, what brings you by?” “I just wanted to say thank you for being a great teacher. I used to be a slacker, but you really taught me to be dedicated to my education. Because of your example, I have a scholarship to a four-year university.” “Marcus, you did the work, but thank you for the good news.” The darkness of defeat left Julia, and her resolve to be a light for her students was strengthened. As a believer, Julia knew the importance of living as a child of the light. Today’s lesson tells us how to also be that light. THE PEOPLE, PLACES AND TIMES Ephesus. Ephesus, located on the west coast of Asia Minor, was an ancient Greek city that came under Roman rule in 133 B.C. It was the second largest city in the Roman Empire and with a population of 250,000 by 1st century B.C., it was the second largest city in the known world. Because of its great harbor and location near major trade routes, Ephesus was an affluent city. It was also politically significant because the Roman governor lived here instead of at the empire’s capital, Rome. Ephesus was the worship center for the goddess Artemis, also known as Diana. Apostle Paul’s longest ministry occurred here nearly three years (Acts 19:8, 10). He came to Ephesus on his third missionary trip, beginning in A.D. 53 (New Unger’s Bible Dictionary, 366-367, 974). While in Ephesus, Paul preached the word of the Lord and took a stand against idol worship. As a result, more Ephesians converted to Christianity and burned their idols. Acts 19 gives an account of Demetrius, a chief silversmith who produced idols and led a riot in protest of Paul’s teaching. His fellow silversmiths were losing business, and it was feared that the worship of Artemis was losing prestige in the city. When the riot ended, Paul soon left Ephesus with Timothy in charge of the church he started. BACKGROUND According to tradition, the Apostle John was living in Ephesus when he wrote this Gospel. The purpose is to emphasize that Jesus Christ is the Messiah, the Son of God, through whom salva-

tion is made available to those who believe (John 20:30, 31). In Jewish thought, a son is one who is obedient to his father, an apprentice of his father, and is an agent (ambassador or emissary) of his father (Thompson, 93). Jesus is, of course, all these things, but His relationship with the Father goes even deeper than this understanding of a son. Jesus also is one with the Father (10:30). John solidified this fact in the first few verses in the Gospel by proclaiming Christ’s identity as the Word of God and then writing of His encounter with John the Baptist, who declares Jesus’ identity (1:15). IN DEPTH 1. The Word (John 1:1-5) Particular to the Gospel of John is the use of the title Word of God when referring to Jesus. Matthew Henry wrote, “the Word is twofold: logos—word conceived; and logos— word uttered” (Henry’s Commentary, online version). The word conceived is thought, the product of the mind. Just as our thoughts are part of us, Christ as the Word is part of God. The uttered word is speech, what is spoken. Christ as the Word came to speak to us, to reveal to us, the mind of God. Unger’s Bible Dictionary states, “Words are the vehicle for the revelation of the thoughts and intents of the mind to others” (780). Jesus is the vehicle through whom God made Himself known to humankind. Just as what we think and say are not separated from us but always with us, Christ as the Word of God has always been with the Father. If the Father is eternal, the Word of God is eternal—not made like creation. All life derives from Jesus Christ. “The Word gave life to everything that was created, and his life brought light to everyone” (John 1:4, NLT). The wise men witnessed the light that had come into the world when they found the baby Jesus, who would grow up and reveal the one true Living God to the world. Once that knowledge came, it could never be extinguished. 2. Children of God (Ephesians 5:1-2) The phrase “Be ye therefore . . .” at the beginning of Ephesians 5 indicates that the chapter continues the subject started in the previous chapter. Paul relayed in chapter 4 the characteristics of a believer’s life. He ended the chapter with: “Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamour, and evil speaking, be put away from you, with all malice: And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ’s sake hath forgiven you” (Ephesians 4:31, 32). Verse 1 in chapter 5 then explains that to put aside bitterness and anger and to be kind to one another

AIM for Change

By the end of the lesson, we will: KNOW the images of Jesus as light overcoming darkness; IMAGINE living in constant light where there are no secrets; and COMMIT to discovering how to live a life as the fruit of light.

Keep In Mind:

“Be ye therefore followers of God, as dear children” (Ephesians 5:1).

Focal verses:

KJV

is to be a follower of God. To describe how closely a believer should follow God’s ways, Paul wrote that we should follow as “dear children.” Paul uses the relationship between children and parents to show how believers, like children, are to imitate their parent, God. It is with this sentiment that Paul calls the believer to follow the ways of God because it is vital to life. In verse 2, the apostle explains that following God is to walk in love (agape). Agape not only refers to the unconditional love of God, but it is also Christian love, which “is not an impulse from the feelings.” Rather, it “seeks the welfare of all” (Vine’s Complete Expository Dictionary of Old and New Testament Words, 382). Christians are to live out this love with Christ as their example. He typified this agape love with the ultimate sacrifice. He “gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God” (Ephesians 5:2b, NIV). 3. Living in the Light (vv. 6-14) In verses 3 through 5, Paul gives a list of sins that do not constitute walking in love. Verse 6 says the believer should not be deceived by those who say such sins are not offensive to God and that even if one were to engage in them, he or she could somehow escape His wrath. God’s anger will come upon anyone who disobeys His command. Believers should not participate in the things these deceivers do. In fact, Christians should not even “encourage them in their sins, prompt them to sin, (but) prevent and hinder them, as far as it may be in our power to do so” (Matthew Henry’s Commentary on the Whole Bible, online version). Now that we are no longer children of darkness, we need to exhibit the light of the Lord, the fruit of the Spirit, in our daily lives. In contrast to the list of sins, this fruit encompasses goodness, righteousness, and truth. Living in the light means we actively seek out those things that are pleasing to God: “Have nothing to do with the fruitless deeds of darkness, but rather expose them” (Ephesians 5:11, NIV). Even speaking of things that the children of darkness do in secret is shameful, but the light of the Lord exposes these secret sins. Nothing is hidden from God. Therefore, it is wise for those who are asleep in their darkness to awake and come into the light. SEARCH THE SCRIPTURES 1. In what way is the Word related to God (John 1:1)? 2. Why is Christ the example for walking in love (Ephesians 5:2)? 3. How should children of Light live (vv. 8-11)? DISCUSS THE MEANING What are some very concrete ways we as Christians can exhibit the light of the Lord in our lives? How can we make sure we put these things into practice in our lives? LESSON IN OUR SOCIETY If we were to examine the list of the works of the flesh, we could find examples of each being implemented in our society (Galatians 5:19-21). These sinful acts are socially acceptable, and those who take a stance against

them are labeled old-fashioned, out of touch, unrealistic, and unreasonable. However, as children of light, we must not waver in our goal to live a life that is pleasing to God no matter the cost. MAKE IT HAPPEN Sometimes it is hard to go against the grain, especially when it seems there are no repercussions for evil acts. This week, pray for the strength to endure and the courage to live in the light of the Lord. MORE LIGHT ON TEXT John 1:1-5; Ephesians 5:12, 6-14 John 1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 The same was in the beginning with God. In many aspects, John 1:1-2 echoes the creation account of Genesis 1:1, which states, “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.” The author of the Gospel of John, the apostle John, places the “Word” (Christ Jesus, the Son) before the creation of the known universe. There are four principles with which the reader should seek familiarity. First, the Word (Christ Jesus) was “in the beginning.” The ancient Greek word for “beginning” is arche (ar-KHAY). The “beginning” probably refers to a period before Creation and the inauguration of time as we know it. This is supplied to us in verse 3 and others that we will discuss. Secondly, the Word (Christ Jesus) “was with God.” Here Christ Jesus existing as the Word is not only placed before all creation but is also associated in community with God the Father, coexisting with one another. Third, Christ

Jesus the Word “was God.” The apostle John makes clear that Christ Jesus did not only exist with God the Father before all creation, but He Himself, too, was God. The Word is specifically recognized as deity, equal to God the Father. Lastly, in verse 2 the apostle John joins his description of the Word with another “beginning” statement, summarizing all said previously. The Word “was in the beginning with God.” 3 All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made. Verse 3 reveals a powerful and sharp revelation of the character and sovereignty of the Word (Christ Jesus). Within this verse, the apostle John directs the reader to the meaning of the phrase “in the beginning” and the specific period it is referring to. Christ Jesus (the Word) existed before all created things, and it is because of Him that all things that were created exist. John 1:3 echoes the words of apostle Paul as stated in Colossians 1:16-17, “For by Him all things were created,

both in the heavens and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things have been created through Him and for Him. He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together” (NASB). As Christians, we must continually live with a faith that consciously reminds us that we worship a God without a beginning, for He Himself was before the beginning and created the beginning itself. He is the source of everything. 4 In him was life; and the life was the light of men. This verse makes two penetrating statements. First, in Him (Christ Jesus) “was life” (Gk. zoe, dzo-AY), meaning to live, breathe, and exist among the living. In a certain way, the apostle John continues alluding to the Creation account, where He places the Word at the beginning and establishes it as creator of the known universe along with everything in it. Life has its origins within God the Father and has residence within the Son; from them, life will continually flow and be sustained. Jesus Christ, the Word, the Son of God is the giver of life for “in Him was life.” Also, the word “life” can signify a heightening or pinnacle of that which we currently

Are you living this life to obtain accolades; are you living this life seeking fame and

Our true motive should be, that God is glorified, Christ is magnified and the people edified. We should not be the center of attention in ministry, neither should we train others to be like us, but train them that they might be imitating the Christ. When our focus is right then God will

have and experience. In and through Jesus, we actualize true living and authentic life. Through Him only are we able to experience the full potential of what life has to offer. The second penetrating statement is that the life dwelling within Christ is “the light of men.” The word “light” (Gk. phos, foce), meaning to shine or make manifest, can signify the revealing and transformative character and power of God. This is both who He is and how life in Him changes our whole being. As Christians, we function as agents of change, being the light of the world (Matthew 5:14), thus being imitators of Jesus Christ who is the ultimate light, which dwells in the world (John 8:12). 5 And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not. This verse provides the first mention of “darkness” (Gk. skotia, skot-EE-ah) within John’s Gospel account. Every reader of the Bible must become familiar with the imagery and meanings this word brings forth. Darkness is used throughout the Bible to represent the antithesis of who and what God is. Darkness comes to represent the bad, the ugly, the corrupt, and the

evil that exist. Darkness, in the New, is a metaphor for evil, and those in darkness are without God and live under the rule of Satan, the evil one (Matthew 6:13). Humanity, which exists apart from God, not only lives in darkness, but the darkness dwells within it as well. This is a cyclical experience: having evil dwell within and being influenced by that same evil to create more manifestations of it throughout the world. Furthermore, through use of the Greek word katalambano (kat-alam-BAN-o, meaning laid hold of), we read that darkness “comprehended (Light) not.” On its own, the darkness can never grasp the totality of who and what Light is. Darkness cannot understand perfected light because one must be in union with and have guidance from the light itself in order to be taught the essence of that light in its entirety. Ephesians 5:1 Be ye therefore followers of God, as dear children; The apostle Paul displays some of the most encouraging words, aimed to inspire unity and establish the highest standard logically possible to “be imitators of God.” The ancient Greek word for “imitators” is mimetes (mim-ay-TACE)

and can also be translated as “followers” per the King James Version (1 Corinthians 4:16; 11:1; Hebrews 6:12). Paul wasn’t speaking from an opinion, mere speculation, or a suggestion detached from the Word of God itself. Actually, he was reiterating a continuous biblical principle. The command “to be” or become like God is dispersed throughout the Pentateuch. God has always wanted His people to be as He is. This is first viewed within the fact that God created humanity in His image, that of the Trinity: “Then God said, ‘Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness’” (Genesis 1:26, NASB). Since the Fall, humanity has developed and nurtured an evil nature, severed from its relationship with God. As a result, the command to be as God is has shifted from humanity as a whole and has been placed on His chosen people (as described in the Old Testament), as well as His children, those that accept His Son as Lord and Savior (as outlined in the New Testament).

Being Effective empower us to accomplish His purpose. When we are seeking the glory, we will be running on our own steam, we won’t last long and neither will what we are trying to accomplish. Spiritual leadership is following after God’s ways and taking His purposes into account. We should be willing to be in it for the long haul, and to do whatever it takes to accomplish His goals, for leadership is not just a onetime event in a person’s life, but leaders are developed for a life time of service. The

Making of a Leader, is an excellent resource to have in your library. I especially appreciated the quote, “The same Jesus who enabled those leaders to live lives of faith will enable me to live a life of faith today.” This quote was a reminder that Jesus never leaves us nor forsakes us to fend for ourselves. Leadership is a lifetime of lessons, for leadership is not only based on knowledge but it is also based on experiences. We will blow it some time, things may not always go as

we would like it, but these will be learning experiences that will grow us to be more effective leaders. Dr. Joyce is a layperson under the leadership of Dr. Ticey M. Brown at the Mt. 2 And walk in love, as Christ also hath loved us, and hath given himself for us an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweetsmelling savour. The ancient Greek word for “walk” is peripateo (per-ee-pat-EH-o), meaning “to make one’s way” to live. It is the totality of an individual’s life, which encompasses his or her behavior, thoughts, and actions. For Paul, the believer’s life should symbolize love but not simply a secular perspective or humanitarian ideal. The believer is to love “as Christ also loved” us all. This statement naturally draws the reader to the connection between love and sacrifice, both of which are epitomized through Christ Jesus’ life, death and resurrection. Paul describes it as “an offering and a sacrifice.” When Christians live a life of sacrificial love, their hearts, thoughts, and actions become pleasing to God. Here, Paul relates the Christian’s life to the life of Christ Jesus. Because of this, the Christian’s life becomes “a pleasing aroma” before the presence of God the Father (v. 2, NLT). 5:6 Let no man deceive you with vain words: for because of these things cometh the wrath of God upon the children of disobedience. 7 Be not ye therefore partakers with them. The apostle Paul begins this section with a stern warning: “Let no one deceive you with empty words” (NASB). The ancient Greek word for “deceive” is apatao (ap-at-AH-o), which denotes the trickery and cheating. This echoes another warning given by the apostle to the church in Colosse: “See to it that no one takes you captive through philosophy and empty deception, according to the tradition of men, according to the elementary principles of the world, rather than according to Christ” (Colossians 2:8, NASB). In 5:6, Paul interestingly deemed these false teachers “the children of disobedience.” He mentions this phrase in two other places (Ephesians 2:2; Colossians 3:6), either in connection with the wrath of God or with the evil influence of the devil himself. Paul makes it clear that these people may be past redemption, for they have completely given themselves over to wickedness and deception. Hence the explicit command in Ephesians 5:7, “Be not ye therefore partakers with them” because only God’s judgment awaits them. 8 For ye were sometimes darkness, but now are ye light in the Lord: walk as children of light: 9 (For the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness and righteousness and truth;) 10 Proving what is acceptable unto the Lord. Apostle Paul warned the believers of deception and in partaking with those in who are in darkness. In verses 8-10, we see a subtle allusion to the temptations of our former lifestyles in the world, symbolized by those in darkness. Our former lives are full of sin, and sin itself is very tempting. This is especially the case when we associate with it some desire for pleasure and reward from the participation

in sin. “But now,” says the apostle, you are “children of light” (God), and it is only by accepting His Son as Lord and Savior that this is actualized (v. 8; John 12:36). This transitional phrase is connected with a set of identifiers. Their new lives in Christ are verified by “all goodness and righteousness and truth” (Ephesians 5:9). The apostle makes a very encouraging statement in verse 10. He exhorted the Christians in Ephesus to remember that their lives in Christ were continually about “trying to learn what is pleasing to the Lord” (v. 10, NASB). Paul understood that the Christian’s life was one of continual growth, always being taught by God. The child of light must always seek God to maintain the light they’ve received, otherwise, their lights will glow dim, increasing the threat of being consumed by the darkness. Christian responsibility projects itself from Paul’s words. Avoiding sinfulness is one part of the equation, and the alerting of sin and its practice is another. The ancient Greek word translated as “participation” is summetochos (soommet-okh-os), describing the sharing of one thing between two or more people. Akarpos (AK-ar-pos) is the original Greek word we translate as “unfruitful.” This word points toward something that produces nothing that is expected of it. This isn’t the only time Paul commanded believers to “expose” (Gk. elegcho, el-ENG-kho) sin (v. 11, NLT). In 1 Timothy 5:20, we read, “Those who continue to sin, rebuke in the presence of all, so that the rest also will be fearful of sinning” (NASB). We cannot stand by as people destroy themselves and those deceived into following them. Sin must be exposed for what it is and what it does.

“Walk Out Our Faith”. Can’t wait to see you there! Some of the victorious things we have done are: volunteered at the Aspire School and made donations for their rummage sale, delivered bread to New Image, delivered toiletry items to His Sheltering Arms, passed out food baskets to families in need. Evening Star Missionary Baptist Church is located at 211 West 59th Street, Los Angeles, California. The Rev. Keith B. Williams is our pastor.

The ONE GOD Who Crushes All Myths

“Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign: The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and will call him Immanuel.” Isaiah 7:14 NIV “If we do not teach our children to follow Christ, the world will teach them not to.” – Unknown

by Andrea Andrews Throughout scripture, God celebrates children – the treasures they are, their innocence

and their vulnerability. As Christian parents, we have an overwhelming obligation to raise them up in the way of the Lord which is a twenty-four hour per day – seven days per week task. Children are not only physically vulnerable to this world…they are spiritual prey for a world much darker than what is witnessed by the natural eye. Advent has begun. The celebration of the initial coming of Christ is the core

of this celebration and yet He is overshadowed by darkness as the commercialization of Christmas continues to brainwash our children. We have even been preconditioned to syncretize (blend biblical principle with world views/ practices) the birth of the Messiah with belief in a mythological Santa Claus. In my recent studies of the origin of “Sinterklaus” (Santa Claus’ name in Holland & the Netherlands)

and “Black Peter”, I stumbled across the following statement: “According to myths dating to the beginning of the 19th century, Saint Nicholas (Sinterklaas) operated by himself or in the companionship of a devil.” We must be extremely careful what and who we introduce our children to. The oppression and captivity of the human soul is the devil’s assignment and he will present/ disguise himself in every way

possible (even as a corpulent man in a red suit with a white beard) in an attempt to win this war with GOD; operating in the world while he still has time. The mythological Santa Claus seems harmless… However, introducing a child of God to a man who runs WITH the devil has no promise for a KINGDOM finish.
