My Utmost for His Highest
The Undetected Sacredness of Circumstances All things work together for good to them that love God. Romans 8:28. The circumstances of a saint’s life are ordained of God. In the life of a saint there is no such thing as chance. God by His providence brings you into circumstances that you cannot understand at all, but the Spirit of God understands. God is bringing you into places and among people and into conditions in order that the intercession of the Spirit in you may take a particular line. Never put your hand in front of the circumstances and say—‘I am going to be my DR. JOHNNY V. BAYLOR HOST PASTOR own providence here; I must watch this, and guard that.’ All your circumstances are in the hand of God, therefore never think it strange concerning the circumstances you are in. Your part in intercessory prayer is not to enter into the agony of intercession, but to utilize the commonsense circumstances God puts you in, and the commonsense people He puts you amongst by His providence, to bring them before God’s throne and give the MATUMAINI (MATU) TAYLOR YOUTH MINISTER Continued On Page 5 UTMOST ........

The Abundance of Green in 2013
Every year at The Watered Garden Fellowship we have a mantra or theme for the year. Although they rhyme they’re more than just poetic. They are prophetic. They communicate the heart of God. To go green in the natural is a concept that raises the consciousness of being more responsible with the earth’s resources. Going green is a movement that is intended to impact our behavior and cause us to benefit from the changes and adjustments that are made. In 2 Peter 1:3 scripture indicates, “according as his divine power hath given unto us ALL THINGS that pertain to life and godliness
through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue. You are resourceful. You are full of life. You already have ALL THINGS. By God’s divine power you already have everything you need. This is the year, time, and season to be intentional about being better stewards over this wonderful life God has given us. This is the time to cultivate your heart, mind and soul to yield much fruit to the glory of God. Man’s first mandate from God was to be fruitful. This means seed or potential was automatically part of the equation. Getting your personal environment conducive to manifest-
ing the beautiful life that was implanted in you at your conception is what this prophetic endeavor of “The Abundance of Green in Twenty Thirteen” is all about. You have so much to live for and are not just alive. In Jeremiah 17:7-8 the Bible indicates that the man who trusts in the Lord, whose confidence is in the Lord, “Will be like a tree planted by the water that sends out its roots by the stream. It does not fear when heat comes; its leaves are always green.. It has not worries in a year of drought and never Continued On Page 7

Spirit in you a chance to intercede for them: In this way God is going to sweep the whole world with His saints. Am I making the Holy Spirit’s work difficult by being indefinite, or by trying to do His work for Him? I must do the human side of intercession, and the human side is the circumstances I am in and the people I am in contact with. I have to keep my conscious life as a shrine of the Holy Ghost, then as I bring the different ones before God, the Holy Spirit makes intercession for them. Your intercessions can never be mine, and my intercessions can never be yours, but the Holy Ghost makes intercession in our particular lives, without which intercession someone will be impoverished. AIM for Change
By the end of the lesson, we will: ANALYZE Paul’s description of God’s exaltation of Jesus based on sacrifice and selflessness rather than power; VALUE selfless behavior rather than power; and ADOPT Christlike humility as our personal lifestyle.
Keep In Mind:
“Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 2:5).
Focal verses:
Philippians 2:5 Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus: KJV
IN FOCUS Rev. Watkins just couldn’t understand why Sister Jenkins had such opposition to the new facility the church was about to purchase. In the past, she had been such a loyal supporter of the church’s programs. Rev. Watkins knew he could not always have the backing of every church member, but he prayed for understanding and insight. His prayer was answered a couple of weeks later when he went to visit Mother Turner, a longtime member of the church who was not able to get to church very often. Without mentioning Sister Jenkins’ name, he talked with Mother Turner about his concern and asked her to pray for him and the church in general. “Pastor,” Mother Turner said, “I don’t get out much, but I do keep up with what’s going on at my church. I know Myrtle Jenkins has been opposed to the new building. She’s had her mind set on opening a day care center, and she wants to use space at the church to save money. She can’t use the new church because of the way it’s set up.” “So that’s it.” Pastor Watkins shook his head. “All that fuss was about what’s good for her, not what’s good for the church.” Many things come into our lives that challenge our public witness. People are watching to see if we are for real. Paul advises us to have the mind of Christ. THE PEOPLE, PLACES AND TIMES Philippi. A city that was located in the Roman province of Macedonia where Paul did a great deal of missionary work. Paul’s first visit to Philippi took place during his second missionary journey, an outgrowth of his Macedonian vision. He and a group of companions sailed from Troas to Neapolis, located on Macedonia’s eastern shore. After they docked, the group traveled a few miles inland to Philippi. It was at Philippi that Paul was miraculously delivered from bondage and the jailer was converted. Upon discovering that Paul was a Roman citizen, the magistrates there became nervous. They pleaded with Paul to leave both the jail and the city. (See Acts 16:12-40.) BACKGROUND Chapter two begins Paul’s second appeal to the Philippians. Apparently, division was brewing within the Philippian congregation. Co-workers in the church had become openly divided. Paul had already had the experience of seeing a church riddled with controversy and dissension. The biggest battle facing the church at Philippi was their internal battle. In the previous lesson, Paul stated his refusal to let external circumstances control his attitudes (Philippians 1:12-18). The congregation could ill afford to let internal strife afflict their witness for Christ. Paul spoke of his imprisonment in terms of its effect on the Philippian mission. He told them that his imprisonment had special significance for them because of the nature of their relationship to the apostle. The church was kind and loyal, but its status was threatened by dissension. It was in the midst of this exhortation to
6 Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God: 7 But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men: 8 And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross. 9 Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name: 10 That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; 11 And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
be one in spirit that Paul launched into this beautiful hymn of praise to our Lord Jesus and His humility. IN DEPTH 1. The Humility of Jesus (Philippians 2:5-8) From the previous chapter, we know Paul was faced with the delicate task of rebuking the congregation he had just praised. He sought to enlist the Philippians’ loyalty and faithfulness against the divisions that had arisen within the church. The concern at Philippi was not so much about instruction in right and wrong as encouragement and guidance in the right will or spirit. Paul’s appeal is for unity and self-denial as exemplified in Christ. Paul was not calling for the Philippians to despise themselves. He was calling for a refusal to let personal interests or advantages govern the course of one’s life. He knew that the success of his appeal was dependent upon the degree to which the Philippians abided in the Spirit of Christ. If they were united in His bond, they would seek the unity and self-denial that is essential to the Christian’s existence. If they could do this, Paul’s joy would be complete in that they would be likeminded, with the same love and on one accord. Many times people misinterpret the meaning of verse five, thinking that it means there must never be a difference of opinion. It does mean, however, that the body is committed to support the work of the church and that the will of God is fulfilled, regardless of personal opinion. Love would provide the incentive for the desired goal of unity, humility, and concern for others. Love (agape) is to do good for another regardless of the cost to self. Paul fully understood the importance of self-effacement, or self-denial. More often than anything else, it is often the self that gets in the way and causes conflict. It is impossible for Christian unity to exist in an atmosphere of self-centeredness. Paul was concerned that the Philippians give themselves over to a mindset governed by Christ. The mind was already present within them because they were believers in Christ Jesus. Paul’s admonition was that they activate (or reactivate) this already present mind among themselves. Paul wanted to address those in Philippi given to self-exaltation. He wanted them to have a true image of humility, as demonstrated in the life of Jesus Christ. In Christ, the perfect example of self-effacement can be found, having voluntarily given up His divinity for humanity. Being in the form of God, Christ “made himself of no reputation” (v. 7) and in human form humbled himself and became obedient to the Father, even to His death on the Cross. 2. The Exaltation of Jesus (vv. 9-11)
While the foregoing section dealt with total debasement of Christ to the lowest depth of humiliation, this section deals with His unprecedented exaltation to the highest point of honor. While the last segment dealt with Christ’s voluntary self-humiliation, this section deals with God exalting Him. In the former, Christ is the actor, the subject of the verbs; in the latter, God is the actor and the subject of the verbs, while Christ is the object. Peter and James echoed this same teaching in their epistles when they wrote: “Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time” (1 Peter 5:6) and “Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up” (James 4:10). SEARCH THE SCRIPTURES 1. After whom did Paul advise the Philippians to model themselves (Philippians 2:5)? 2. What role did Christ choose for Himself (v. 7)? 3. To what extent did God exalt Christ (vv. 9-11)? DISCUSS THE MEANING 1. How can we teach young people to be proud of their ancestry and at the same time to be humble and serve one another? 2. What are some ways we can exalt Jesus today? LESSON IN OUR SOCIETY Humility is not valued or praised very much in our society. Among the rich and famous, those who have given themselves to humility and service seem to garner little attention. Conversely, those who have earned a “bad boy” reputation for arrogance or selfabsorption often become media darlings. This is all the more reason that the Christian community must understand who we are and Whose we are. Our calling, as disciples, is to follow our leader and fashion ourselves to be like Christ as much as we can. Our efforts to do this will rarely earn us human praise. It will, however, be pleasing in the eyes of the Lord. MAKE IT HAPPEN Churches tend to have personalities, just as people do. In spite of its troubles at the time Paul wrote his letter, the Philippian congregation seemed to have a loving spirit with an inclination toward obedience. The humility in today’s passage is immediately followed by encouragement from Paul to move forward based on the various abilities they already possessed. What assets, gifts, or talents do you already possess that can be polished and enhanced to make you of greater benefit to the work of God’s kingdom? Ask yourself whether you are willing to be used in this manner. If so, what steps must you take to get to that point? Are you willing to, as Paul did, offer yourself as a sacrifice for the benefit of fellow Christians and those who have yet to come to know Christ? MORE LIGHT ON TEXT Philippians 2:5-11 5 Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus:
The Greek verb used here is phroneo (fron-EH-o, used also in v. 2) and is translated “let this mind (or attitude) be in you.” Simply put, Paul says, “Have this frame of mind in you, which was also in Christ Jesus.” It should be noted here that there are limits to what examples of Christ we, as Christians, can follow. We cannot follow His redemptive acts. The sacrificial suffering and death on the Cross for our salvation and divine justice are Christ’s prerogatives; no person can copy it. What we can copy is the spirit that is basic to these acts: His love, humility, and servitude to others. These are the attitudes or disposition “which was also in Christ Jesus” (v. 5). 6 Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God: In eternity, Christ was “in the form of God” (Gk. en morphe theos, en mor-FAYTHEH-os). Saying Christ existed in the form of God is probably a subtle way of affirming the divine nature of Christ, that He possessed the very nature of God, without saying plainly that Christ was God. The reason for this is ever hidden in the mind of the author and will be extremely difficult to discern. The next clause “thought it not robbery to be equal with God” seems to corroborate the above interpretation. The expression of Christ’s equality with God here is confirmed by and is consistent with John’s account: “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God” (John 1:1). In John

10:30, Jesus said to His audience and disciples, “I and my Father are one.” Writing to the Colossians concerning Christ, Paul says, “Who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature” (Colossians 1:15). These clearly point to the divinity of Christ and His equality with God. In Philippians 2:6, the word “robbery” (Gk. harpagmos, h a r- p a g - M O S ) m e a n s t o plunder or the act of seizing. Here, it is best interpreted that although He was equal with God in His divine nature, Christ did not think of this equality as something to be seized upon or to be held fast or held onto. That means that Christ possessed the divine nature and was by all accounts equal with God and had the right to hold tight to it and use it to His own advantage. Christ did not see His equality with the Father as a position to greedily and selfishly grasp and use for His own advantage but as “giving and spending oneself out” for others. 7 But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in

the likeness of men: With the use of the conjunction “but” (Gk. alla, al-LAH), Paul clearly states the thought that rather than clinging to His divine nature and equality with God, Christ “made himself of no reputation” (Gk. kenoo, ken-O-o), i.e., He emptied or drained or gave of Himself. The use of the reflexive pronoun “himself ” in the sentence is emphatic and suggests that the act of emptying by Christ was voluntary. The natural question is: What did Christ empty out of Himself? Scholars have proposed a number of suggestions. We can say that He emptied Himself of: 1. The glory He had with the Father before the foundation of the world (Matthew 16:27; John 12:23; 17:5); 2. His authority in heaven and earth; all He did on earth He attributed to the Father, and this was given back to Him after the Resurrection (Matthew 28:18; Ephesians 1:20-23; 1 Peter 3:22) 3. The independent use of His divine attributes and power; as a human He could not perform miracles apart from the command of the Father and work of the Holy Spirit (Isaiah 11:1-2; 42:1; 61:1-2; Luke 3:21-22; 4:16-21; John 2:11; 3:34)
1-888-290-7277 Some would object. As William Hendriksen put it: “‘If Christ Jesus actually gave up his favorable relation to the divine law, riches, glory, and independent exercise of authority, how could he still be God?’” (Exposition of Philippians, 108). The answer lies in His human function. While on earth, He laid aside His consistent expression of these things, while retaining His divine nature, and operated as a man, having assumed human form (Philippians 2:7b). He was never divested of His divinity in His incarnation but “humbled himself,” laying aside the independent exercise of divine attributes (v. 8). That He retained His divinity can be seen in His teachings and miracles, which testified to His deity and dumbfounded His critics (Matthew 7:29; 21:23; John 2:1-11). He also affirmed His divinity to His disciples (John 10:30; 14:7-9). He not only emptied Himself, but He “took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men” (Philippians 2:7). We notice the use of morphe (morFAY), “form,” with the same meaning as in verse 6 used here. Taking the form of a “servant” (Gk. doulos, DOO-
NEWS@RAISETHEPRAISENEWS.NET los), slave or bondsman, does not mean that He adopted the external appearance of a slave, neither does it mean that He pretended to be a slave or disguised Himself as a servant. Rather, it means that he adopted or “accepted” (Gk. lambano, lam-BAN-o), which refers to the disposition, characteristics, and attributes of a slave. The word has a negative connotation in its literary sense—one under bondage and authority of another. Figuratively used, though, the word can, at least in part, lose the sense of compulsion and have a more positive meaning. For example, doulos can be used to designate man’s relationship to God. To some interpreters, “slave” as applied to Christ should be understood this way, especially in light of Isaiah’s Suffering Servant passages (Isaiah 52:13-53:12). Christ “taking the form of a servant” means that He exactly played the part of a servant of God. The slave had no freedom of his own, nor any personal choice or will, but was in bondage to the will of and claim of his master. Who was Christ serving—God or humankind? Christ put Himself in the place of the servant and washed His
disciples’ feet, and that act dramatized the call to serve one another. Thus, Paul’s designation of Christ as doulos emphasizes the fact that in the Incarnation, Christ entered the stream of human life as a slave— that is, as a person without advantage, with no rights or privileges of his own for the express purpose of placing Himself completely to the service of all humankind (Mark 10:45; Luke 22:27). For in serving people, He was serving God, and in taking the role of a slave toward others, He was acting in obedience to the will of God. In Philippians 2:7 Paul continues with his focus on Christ as a servant. Christ not only took on the form of a servant, He “was made in the likeness of men.” The verb “was made” (Gk. ginomai, GHIN-om-ahee), gives the idea of coming into existence or to become; it is also used of men appearing in public. Here, Christ is said to come into existence “in the likeness of man,” which speaks of His incarnation as a human. The word “likeness” (Gk. homoioma, hom-OY-

FOOD FOR THOUGHT
The Task of Mentoring
DR. JOYCE HARRELL
As leaders it is our responsibility to walk with and guide those in our sphere of influence. This walking with or coming alongside is called “mentoring.” In the book, “They Smell Like Sheep,” by Dr. Lynn Anderson, the value of mentoring is broken down. Dr. Anderson states, “Mentor in one sense is another dimension of shepherd, but with a different emphasis. Shepherds feed, protect, and care for sheep; mentors pull up alongside human beings and model behavior, values, and faith through the shared life. Jesus made it clear that His leadership style is based on submis-

sion and service, not on authority. Of the pagan leaders who assert their authority, Jesus said, “do not be like them.” He Himself led by serving and He tells us that where He leads out, we are to follow. Paul, too, spelled out mentoring as his leadership model. “Follow my example, as I follow the example of Christ.” “Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me, or seen in me – put it into practice.” Paul and Jesus modeled their teaching. What they taught was transmitted by example. That is, their teaching was what they did as much as what they said. Example! Teaching! Model! These are the facets of mentoring the faith from one generation to the next and of developing fully devoted followers of Jesus. The modern day church shouts the need for godly men and women to serve as spiritual mentors. Spiritual mentors model more than style and vision – spiritual mentors model faith formation, Christ-like lifestyle, ministry skills …. and so much more. If we don’t provide the flock with positive mentors, the sheep will flock to negative mentors by default,” Dr. Joyce is a lay-person, under the leadership of Dr. Ticey Brown, at Mt. Tabor Missionary Baptist Church, where she serves as the Strategic Leadership Director. o-mah) does not mean that “Christ only appeared to be a man” or that He seemed to resemble a man. Rather, the word should be understood as made after the likeness, image, or similarity or identity that amounts to equality. The idea here is that in all respects, both in appearance and vulnerability, Christ was like other human beings. He was born by a woman just as other men and grew up as others. He was genuinely human. 8 And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross. In verse 8, Paul continues to describe the thought of Christ’s humility as shown not only by His assuming human form and the role of a servant, but by humbling Himself to such a degree of acceptance and subjecting Himself to the most humiliating type of death—on a cross. This, Paul seems to convey, is the lowest step of humility. Paul wrote, “Being found in fashion as a man,” which means that He was perceived or recognized (Gk. heurisko, hyoo-RIS-ko) in every respect as an ordinary human. As if assuming the form and the role of a servant and the likeness and nature of a human being were not enough, He also “humbled himself ” to the point that he “became obedient (to God, even) unto death.” His obedience has no limits, the statement implies. Furthermore, Paul emphasizes the lowest extent that Christ went in His humility and obedience to God when he adds, “even the death of the cross.” This act is voluntary and in absolute obedience to the will of God. Jesus says (referring to His life), “No man taketh it from me, but I lay it down of myself. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again. This commandment have I received of my Father” (John 10:18). No one on earth could have gone so low, and He could not have gone lower. That was the lowest! Death by crucifixion is said to have come from the Persians and was developed by the Romans. It was the most humiliating and cruel form of capital punishment—reserved only for the worst criminals, such as robbers, murderers, and sometimes slaves. Jews and Romans abhorred this type of death. For the Jew, death by crucifixion not only brought shame and pain, it was considered accursed by God (Deuteronomy 21:22-23; 1 Corinthians 1:23; Galatians 3:13; Hebrews 12:2). Here, Paul reminds the Philippians that Jesus reached the lowest point of humility. He says in effect that Christ, who was in every conceivable way God (in His preexistence) and was equal with God (an equality to which He did not think it necessary to hold tightly or to constantly assert), emptied and humbled Himself by assuming the role and attributes of a slave. He affirms that Christ came in the likeness of a mortal being and surrendered Himself totally in obedience to God, even to the point of dying—not an ordinary death, but a criminal’s death— a death on the cross. We know this was for the benefit and service to humankind. The underlying thought in verses 5-8 is that if Christ humbled Himself and went so low as to die, the Philippians, and indeed all believers, should constantly endeavor to be willing to follow their Master’s example of humility and strive to achieve the spirit of oneness among themselves. 9 Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name: Verse 9 can be restated thusly: Because Christ humbled Himself to the lowest point of death, even death on the Cross,

consequently “God also hath highly exalted him” to the highest point of honor. He humbled Himself, therefore He was exalted, which follows the divine order of things as taught by Christ Himself. The same rule that He laid down for others is applicable to Him, to the Philippians and indeed to all Christians of all times. This rule, stated in its various forms throughout the Scripture, simply says, “in the divine order of things, selfhumbling leads inevitably to exaltation” (see Hawthorne, 90). The Greek word used for Christ’s exaltation and translated here as “highly exalted him” by most translations is huperupsoo (hoop-er-oop-SO-o). It is found only here in the New Testament. It means to exalt to the highest rank and power, as in the military or highest office, or to be elevated to the highest position. Here, Christ is exalted beyond measure—to a point after which there is nothing higher. Huperupsoo literally means, “to super-exalt.” The use of this rare word confirms the idea that He who humbled Himself to the lowest depth is now raised to the highest heights. The same Greek word is used in the Old Testament (Septuagint, LXX) to describe Yahweh being “‘exalted far above all gods’” (Psalm 97:9; see Hawthorne, 91). Christ’s super-exaltation means that He received the ultimate place of honor and majesty and is accordingly “seated at the right hand of God’s throne” (Mark 16:19; Acts 2:33; 5:31; Romans 8:34; Hebrews 1:3), “far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this age but also in the one to come” (Ephesians 1:21, NASB). Paul further describes this glorious elevation of Christ by adding that God gave “him a name which is above every name” (Philippians 2:9). This statement serves as a reinforcement of the first and describes the magnitude of Christ’s exaltation. He was “given” (Gk. charizomai, khar-ID-zom-ahee), i.e., God bestowed on Him the “name” (Gk. onoma, ON-om-ah) “above” (Gk. huper, hoop-ER) “. . . every name.” The idea here is that just as He is exalted to highest position, Christ is granted or bestowed the greatest name that surpasses every thinkable name. In the ancient or Jewish tradition, name giving is more than merely a means of identifying, labeling, or distinguishing one person from another. In that tradition, a name usually carries a relational, spiritual, or historical significance; in many instances, it also reflects the person’s character, inner being, and the true nature of the individual. A name in the Jewish tradition could also reveal God’s activity on an individual. For example, God changed “Abram” to “Abraham” because He was about to make Abraham “father of many nations,” which is the meaning of the new name (Genesis 17:5). Names are also given to reflect an important historical event. The angel of the Lord told Jacob after wrestling with him, “Thy name shall be called no more Jacob, but Israel: for as a prince hast thou power with God and with men, and hast prevailed” (Genesis 32:28). An angel told Joseph that Jesus would be called “Emmanuel,” which is “God is with us” and reflects

Christ as God who came in the flesh (Matthew 1:18-23). We can, therefore, deduce from these passages that God not only graciously bestowed on Christ the name that is above every other name to distinguish Him from all other beings, but He bestowed on Him the name that reflects His exalted nature, a title that coincides with a new position. Some interpreters state that this name is “Lord” (Gk. kurios, KOO-ree-os), which means then that Christ not only carries both the title and the character of “Lord,” He is Lord (Philippians 2:11). It is important to note that the root meaning of the term kurios is used in the Old Testament (LXX) to translate the personal name of God, YAHWEH, a name that denotes rulership and authority. This, therefore, means that God installed Christ to the same position, which rightly belongs to God Himself. He is now equal with God; this equality and honor Christ refused to abrogate to Himself or grasp with pride (v. 6). He now possesses the sovereign authority and rules over the entire universe. After His resurrection, Jesus declared, “All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth” (Matthew 28:18; see also Ephesians 1:20-21). 10 That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; Paul gives us a two-part
and disguised. In fact, if and when the word “love” flows from the pulpit, the congregation has become so very desensitized to its true meaning that the message to love one another often falls upon deaf ears. Mistakenly, as a culture, we have even been conditioned to love things which can not love us back – loving cars, homes, jobs, positions & titles…pizza; yet, we fail miserably at honoring God’s request
of us to love one another. Pop culture has even placed a spotlight on how lucrative it is to televise and broad/pod/webcast just the opposite – men hating women, women hating men, parents hating children, children hating their parents, women hating each other, men despising other men… There is even a percentage of people fully dedicated to hating Jesus. Believers MUST be ever so careful NOT to be shaped to
such practices…“in this world, but NOT of it”. It must be our daily focus to speak love, portray love, build bridges of love and completely embody love at ALL times. When we project love, it is an absolute reflection of God’s heart indwelling each one of us in the form of His Precious Holy Spirit. Love & hate can not occupy the same space. “A house divided surely will fall”. AGAPE Love: Unconditional love…
PHILIA Love: Love for one’s neighbor – our brothers & sisters of no blood relation… STORGE Love: Familial love for those whom are related to us…EROS Love: Matrimonial…romantic…erotic love shared between two people ONLY… NOT a “pass the collection plate” kind of ALL access pass…Let us honor our Father’s request. purpose for Christ’s exaltation and bestowal of the highest name. The first part, introduced by “that”— (Gk. hina, HIN-ah), which means so that or in order that — is that “at the name of Jesus every knee should bow.” This clause does not say that “at the name, Jesus” every knee should bow but rather “at the name of Jesus” (meaning, the name that now belongs to Jesus or the name that He now bears). That name is kurios as we have discussed above. It is now bestowed to the historical Jesus, who humbled Himself to the lowest depth, who took up the role of a slave, who became human in time and space. He was crucified and died the most shameful death on the cross—the same Jesus who was rejected of all men but whom God has made both Christ and Lord (Acts 2:36). He, who was obedient even to death, is to be obeyed and worshiped. The bowing of the knee is almost universally used as a sign of reverence to someone of higher stature or authority, such as kings and chiefs. The bending of the knee is also a symbol of worship. God says in Isaiah 45:23, “Unto me every knee shall bow, every tongue shall swear” and that such worship is reserved for Himself only (Exodus 20:5). Here, this honor is now applied to Jesus, who has been accorded the highest name ever imagined— the name Lord. Therefore, all must fall on their knees before Christ in worship. In Philippians 2:10, Paul goes on to declare the magnitude

and sphere of the homage to Christ with a series of a d j e c t i ve s , “ o f t h i n g s i n heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth.” This shows that the worship of Christ is universal in nature. In other words, all creation is to worship Him. This would definitely include angels, humans, spirits, and demons, including all principalities and powers (Colossians 1:16, 20; 2:15); all would ultimately join in act of worship to Christ. They would bow on their knees before Christ in awe and adoration. In his revelation, using the same universal phraseology, the apostle John says that he saw and heard: “Every creature which is in heaven, and on the earth, and under the earth, and such as are in the sea, and all that are in them, . . . saying, Blessing, and honour, and glory, and power, be unto him that sitteth upon the throne, and unto the Lamb for ever and ever” (Revelation 5:13). 11 And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory
Therefore, this confession is not limited to the church but includes every being within the sphere of God’s creation that will all, in fact, admit that Jesus is Lord. In Philippians 2:11, Paul concludes this hymn by saying the acknowledgment of Jesus as Lord is “to the glory of God the Father.” The exaltation of Christ to the highest possible realm, the giving of the highest name imaginable, and the proclamation of Christ as Lord by all peoples, have one ultimate goal: the glory of the Father. Thus, when the Son is glorified, the Father is glorified (John 13:31-32; 14:13; 17:1). Paul calls the Philippians to follow the example of Christ— H i s h u m i l i t y— f o r t h a t i s the true road to personal exaltation and to the glory of God. Here, the formula is clear: “The surest way up is by stepping down, the surest way to gain for oneself is by giving up oneself, the surest way to life is by death, the surest way to win the praise of God is by steadfastly serving others” (Hawthorne, 95).
of God the Father. The second of Paul’s two-part expression of God’s purpose in exalting Christ and giving Him the highest name above every other name—is “that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord.” Here, the writer reaches the climax of the “hymn” and gives us, as we previously indicated, the name that is above other names—“Lord.” The phrase “should confess” is the Greek exomologeo (ex-om-ol-og-EH-o), which is to acknowledge openly and joyfully the Lordship of Christ. The idea here is to affirm and celebrate Jesus as Lord, to praise and honor Him. Who is to acknowledge Christ as Lord? Paul says every “tongue” (Gk. glossa, gloceSAH), which literally means language, but is used here to indicate the universality of the confession—“everyone,” “all,” or “all peoples.” Glossa, or “tongue,” is often used in the Scriptures as a synonym for “tribe, people or nation” (Isaiah 66:18; Daniel 3:4, 7; Revelation 5:9; 7:9; 10:11).
