HOST PASTOR

GOOD FRIDAY Good Friday is the opening to what should be the most powerful weekend of the Christian believer. It is the Friday that Jesus Christ was whipped for our transgressions, bruised for our iniquities, died for our sins and descended into hell to set the captives free. The Greater Zion Church Family – under the pastoral leadership of Reverend Dr. Michael J. Fisher – has several services planned to celebrate the victory over death, the grave and the enemy’s malicious schemes. It is during Good Friday that the Lamb of God becomes the perfect sacrifice for us. At 12 Noon on Good Friday the Greater Zion Church Family will host the traditional “7 Last Sayings of Jesus Christ on the Cross” with Min. Antonio Alexander, Rev. Cortnee Morrow, Rev. Alvin Gilbert, Rev.

vices are as follows: 7a.m., 9a.m., 11a.m. and 5p.m. We recommend early arrival to all services to guarantee a seat. We expect God’s presence to reside with us during each service, providing supernatural access to His grace, mercy and healing. We would like to include a special emphasis on the evening service. It is during our 5p.m. service that our K.R.A.Z.Y. Krew Children’s Ministry and Kingdom X/2408 Youth Ministry will display their appreciation for the death and resurrection of the Risen Savior. Additionally, the Ministerial Staff will present the 3rd Annual “Artifacts of Calvary.” This is another presentation of Calvary that relates the power and impact of the objects used during the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. The objects that will be used to the people of God during the evening service are as follows: the crown of thorns placed on His head, the whip used to beat Him, the vinegar given when He was thirsty, the hammer and nails that went through His hands and feet, the spear that went into His side, the cross that He was nailed to, and even the mountain called Calvary that He was crucified on. The Greater Zion Church Family is trusting God that knowing the power of Christ’s resurrection and sharing in His sufferings will forever change of the lives the people that join us for any and all

of the above-mentioned services. Greater Zion Church Family is located at 2408 North Wilmington Avenue in the beautiful city of Compton. For more information regarding this revival or any of our other services, please contact our Church Office by calling (310) 639-5535 or visit our website at www.GreaterZionChurchFamily.com. PASTOR DR. MICHAEL FISHER

Marquise Brown, Rev. Freddie Gordon, and Rev. Darby. This service reminds the people of God of the ultimate testament of Jesus Christ’s ministry. It is on the cross that we see Christ’s humanity and divinity; that we understand His provision and the completion of His earthly ministry; and where we receive Christ’s salvation, power and victory. At 7p.m. on Good Friday, the Greater Zion Church Family will give a pioneering presentation of Calvary: The Vantage Points of Calvary. We have heard the story of Calvary from Christ’s perspective through His “7 Last Sayings”, but this evening service will be an opportunity to hear about Calvary from those that were there. During this service, hear the Greater Zion ministerial staff give Peter, Mary, Mary Magdalene, the thieves, the Roman Centurion soldier and John’s account of the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. Each of them were, individually, impacted by His ministry and His stay on earth. Listen to hear how seeing their Christ, the Savior dying. EASTER SUNDAY I want to know Christ and the power of His resurrection and the fellowship of sharing in His sufferings, becoming like Him in his death, and so, somehow, to attain to the resurrection from the dead. THE BETHEL CHURCH Presents “HEALING FOR THE SOUL” MUSICAL The Bethel Church of Pasadena, in conjunction with D’Veal Family and Youth Services and the F.S. Stevens Family Life Center, presents a community-wide gospel musical entitled “Healing for the Soul”. This one-night only production is on Saturday, April 16, 2011 from 6:00p.m. – 8:00p.m. at The Bethel Church, located at 1972 North Fair Oaks Ave., Pasadena. This musical will pay special tribute to “families affected by violence”. Youth violence is an epidemic in our urban communities. Homicide is the second leading cause of death among adolescents. Within the African-American community, the rates of homicide are even more staggering. Violence has a tremendous impact on the health and well-being of our communities, and on our youth in particular, and needs to be viewed as a public health issue. The emotional, physical, and psychological toll on those affected is immeasurable. Unfortunately, the tragic and violent loss of a child seems to have become an acceptable, normal, and routine part of life. The Bethel Church strongly believes in the power of praise and in its ability to change our outlook on life’s situations and struggles. Just as it has always been, music is a vital component of our culture. Music is not only a form of celebration but also a form of self-expression by which each generation communicates its sorrows, grief, anguish, and the turmoil of the soul. The church has been given the authority and power to come against violence as a force of evil and command that “We shall live and not die!” As representatives of the Kingdom of God, we are compelled to minister to those who lack hope, faith and who are grieving deeply from the senseless loss of loved ones at the hands of violence. The “Healing for the Soul” musical is our next action step to address violence from a spiritual perspective and an opportunity to minister to our invited community guest through the power of spiritual music and praise. The Bethel Church is also excited and pleased to have D’Veal Family and Youth Services, a community-based social service agency, working with us in this community effort. D’Veal has over 17 years of experience providing counseling services, which includes specializing in violence intervention and prevention services. D’Veal’s trained professional staff will be in attendance at the event and available to assist anyone desiring to talk about their issues of loss, grief and/or needing any additional supportive services. Staff from the F.S. Stevens Family Life Center will also be joining us in this effort. Our Psalmist will be the anointed Carolyn Hopkins of the Victory Bible Church, Pasadena, in concert with the Bethel Music Ministry, saxophonist Jay Boykin, Elder Larry W. Robertson of Long Beach, Kingdom Worship Center Ensemble featuring Pastor Ji Nelson of Riverside and M.I.G. of Pasadena. If you require transportation or additional information regarding this inspirational evening of ministry in song, please contact The Bethel Church at (626) 794-3136.

ONE FAITH FELLOWSHIP’S NUGGETS FOR THE SOUL

Which “L” Describes you? Whether we desire to be or not, each of us is labeled and categorized so as to distinguish us from others due to circumstances that present themselves in our lives. Does your life depict the characteristics of one who gives lip service to life situations or are you someone who is known by the lifestyle you represent? Each of us from time to time may present a great defense of what we did or did not do and of whom we are or are not; which will only be settled when the facts are presented. However, our true labeling is not based on others’ opinions, but rather on whom we are and what we do. Luke 6:44For every tree is known by his own fruit. For of thorns men do not gather figs, nor of a bramble bush gather they grapes. This verse affirms the truth that we are properly labeled according to our actions. Our title asks the

question “Which “L” Describes You?” The “Lip” describes a person who talks a “Good Talk”, selling himself and attempting to persuade others to follow them based on what they are saying. The “Lip” mentality knows just what to say, how to say it, and when to say it! So much that if they did not know any better they would deceive themselves! Unfortunately, many have deceived themselves by their own “Lip Action”. However, when people think or see this type of person, in their minds the labeling of that person is “There Ain’t Nothing to Them”, liar, hypocrite, faker, etc. For there is no noticeable creditability to what they represent, who they really are and definitely to what they say. Then there is the “L” representing “Lifestyle”! This person knows what they say will be impacted more by demonstration. The “Lifestyle” Men-

DR. TONYA LEWIS

tality is in touch with reality as we learn that actions go much farther than mere words. Their Lifestyle communicates and endorses a certain behavior. The “Lifestyle” mentality realizes that the message will be better understood by seeing it executed in the life of the one encouraging

such action. Even if one is unable to demonstrate “It” now in their “Lifestyle”, the regret for not making wise decisions should be sincerely communicated to others. The “Lifestyle” Mentality understands that just as the saying: “Don’t Do As I Do, But As I Say” is not effective with children, neither is it effective in the lives of adults! So the questions we must ask ourselves are: What messages do we desire to communicate to others? What are we really attempting to “Get Them to Understand and Embrace?” Are they seeing it demonstrated in our “Lifestyle” or are they just seeing our “Lips” move? Are we saying one thing and doing another? Are we inviting them to do as “I Do and Not Just As I Say”? Are we setting a good example for all we encounter, whether they are children or adults? Are we speaking from true experience that the advice, encouragement, method or word that we share will really make a difference in their lives because we have tried it? Is what

we are saying able to be a reality in their lives or are we setting them up for a “Sure Fail” and “Defeated” mentality? The Apostle Paul references in 2 Corinthians 3:2 of people being “Written Epistles”, known and read by all men. What has your “Lifestyle” penned about you? What are others reading and seeing of your life? Are you known because of your words or deeds? We will not have to answer this question verbally; the type of fruit on our trees will sound out the answers! A powerful quote is” Your life is your message to the world. Make it inspiring.” (Lorrin L. Lee) Prayers and Blessings to you and yours!! Each of you is invited to attend our 1st Sat. Fellowship for May, which will be held on April 30, 2011, 12:00 noon. FOOD FOR THOUGHT

The Leader’s Emotional Health

DR. JOYCE HARRELL

Did you know that the experiences of our past could have an affect on how we lead? Could it be that the leader who strives to be in control is acting that way because in their past life experiences they suffered abuse, and they are now determined that they will never be powerless again? Negative life experiences can cripple us as leaders and can be detrimental if we don’t come to terms with them. R. Paul Stevens is quoted

as saying, “We are often crippled because of past hurts. These are not our deliberate sins, or the results of our sin, but our weaknesses, points of vulnerability, where there is a proneness to sin, because others have sinned against us.” It is vital not only to our spiritual well-being, but also vital for the spirituality of ministry that we quickly that come to terms with these issues. The first step is in confession before our Lord. “Psalms 51: “I will confess therefore what I know of myself, and what I do not know: for what I know of myself, I know through the shining of your light; and what I do not know of myself, I continue not to know until my darkness shall be made as noonday in your countenance.” Confession brings forgiveness and restoration. Confession also puts me in a place where I must trust

Jesus Christ. Trust Him in light of Who He is, al l powerful and more than capable to heal me in lieu of my past. Jesus helps us to realize that our experiences do not define who we are. That by itself should take away the sting and the power of our past life experiences. Only our relationship with Christ defines who we are, we are now no longer victims but victors! To God be the glory! Dr. Joyce is a layperson under the leadership of Dr. Ticey Brown at the Mt. Tabor Missionary Baptist Church; where she serves as the Strategic Leadership Director. Dr. Joyce’s mission is to develop servantleaders and enhance ministries within the Church; Dr. Joyce is available for one-on-one consultations, small group training sessions and workshops. PRAISES OF ZION MASS CHOIR PRESENTS “YOU’RE TOO SHORT TO BOX WITH GOD” Greetings to all the Saints of God! Dr. J. Benjamin Hardwick, the proud Senior Pastor of Praises of Zion M.B.C., on behalf of the Mass Choir, proudly extends an invitation to the entire church community to join us on Friday, April 22, 2011 at 7:00 p.m., and also on April 24, 2011 at 6:00 p.m., as we present adaptation of “Your Arms Are Too Short to Box With God”, written by Ms. Vinnette Carroll. Our production is entitled, “You’re Too Short To Box With God.” Truly all roads will lead to Praises of Zion, and there is a seat waiting just for you! We have tickets for limited preferred seating available. General admission is free. Please call the church office for tickets at (323) 750-1033. We are located at 8222 S. San Pedro Street, in Los Angeles. Please conduct the church office at (323) 750-1033 if further information is desired. What? You say you have already seen it before? Good, then you know what a wonderful message the play delivers. It really does not matter because the story is the same. Nothing added, and nothing taken away. But there are yet many who have not heard the Easter message of

redemption and hope. Our message is: “He is not here…On that first Easter morning the disciples came to the tomb of Jesus and found it empty. They came expecting to find a body and instead they found emptiness.. The empty tomb is a compelling image. The angel at the empty tomb explains that the risen Jesus has gone ahead of the disciples and would meet them in Galilee. Put another way, what is being said is that Jesus who died in the past has been raised in the present, and he goes ahead of the disciples to Galilee where he will meet them in the future. Past, present and future find their focus in Jesus. Consider this fact: Jesus is still ahead of us. We are not stuck with whatever our past may have been. We are not mired in the problems of our present. Jesus has gone ahead of us and will meet us in our future…“He has risen like He said He would.” And more than that, that same Christ is available to all people. Believe it or not, this is a perfect beginning or ending to the celebration of Easter for men, women, children (of all ages), families and church groups. You will feel nothing but spiritual vibrations throughout the sanctuary as the Mass Choir

of “Praise City”, under the direction of Sister Harriesha Neal, and our musical director is none other than the anointed Rev. Calvin Rhone, along with many special guests who will breathe life into the characters before your very eyes. You will meet Jesus, Mary, the high priests, the elders, Judas, King Herod, and Pontius Pilate! You will see the miracles that Jesus performed, and experience the agony of Christ during the Crucifixion, and the hope and glory of the Resurrection. So plan on joining us for a joyous, foot-stomping, hand-clapping, and fan waving celebration of Gospel music primarily based on the Gospel of St. Matthew, which tells the story of Christ, and traces the scriptural events from the day Jesus Christ arrives in Jerusalem on Palm Sunday, to the morning of the Resurrection. So until that appointed time, no matter what situations you might find yourself in, remember, “You’re Too Short To Box With God!” God bless, and we expect to see you there. To God be the glory! Dr. J. Benjamin Hardwick, Senior Pastor, Sister Veal Neal, Choir President, and Sister Clarice Holmes, Reporter.

never man sat; loose him, and bring him. 3 And if any man say unto you, Why do ye this? say ye that the Lord hath need of him; and straightway he will send him hither. 4 And they went their way, and found the colt tied by the door without in a place where two ways met; and they loose him. 5 And certain of them that stood there said unto them, What do ye, loosing the colt? 6 And they said unto them even as Jesus had commanded: and they let them go. 7 And they brought the colt to Jesus, and cast their garments on him; and he sat upon him. 8 And many spread their garments in the way: and others cut down branches off the trees, and strawed them in the way. 9 And they that went before, and they that followed, cried, saying, Hosanna; Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord: 10 Blessed be the kingdom of our father David, that cometh in the name of the Lord: Hosanna in the highest. 11 And Jesus entered into Jerusalem, and into the temple: and when he had looked round about upon all things, and now the eventide was come, he went out unto Bethany with the twelve.

IN FOCUS Reggie was always a star. He was an athlete and a scholar throughout his high school and college years. Reggie was also a top draft pick for a leading national football league team in the first round, and he was excited about his future. He had just signed a major deal with his new team and was primed to be a franchise player. With his mother and fiancée in the audience, he accepted his new team jersey as the press took pictures and asked questions. As he left the press conference, fans cheered for him. People were screaming his name; fans were trying to get his attention, maybe even an autograph or a picture with him. Reggie thought, I have really arrived; all of my dreams are coming true! Athletes, entertainers, political figures, and the like are esteemed by the public for their abilities and achievements. However, only what we do for Christ will last, and only God is worthy of such lavish praise and adulation. In today’s lesson, we will take a look at Jesus’ triumphant return to Jerusalem as people believed He would set up an earthly kingdom and deliver them from their enemies. THE PEOPLE, PLACES AND TIMES Passover. According to Jewish tradition, the festival of Passover lasts for seven or eight days and commemorates God’s sparing Jewish lives while they were in brutal servitude to the Egyptians. The name of the holiday comes from the fact that God “passed over” the houses of the Jews when he was slaying the firstborn of Egypt. In Hebrew, it is known as Pesach (meaning “passing over” or “protection”). The significance of Jesus coming into Jerusalem at the time of Passover marks His own coming sacrifice at the Cross as the “Passover Lamb” who would take away the sins of the world in the days to come. The first day of Passover observes the escape of the Jews from the 10th plague, while the remaining seven days mark their liberation from slavery and exodus from Egypt. The Jewish people hold a feast called the Seder on the first night of Passover. Mount of Olives. It is located east of Jerusalem and stands between Jerusalem and Bethany. Jesus preached from the Mount of Olives and would retreat alone to it at the end of the day, as was His custom (Luke 22:39). This was also the place where He wept over Jerusalem. Not far off, at the bottom of the Mount of Olives, is the Garden of Gethsemane where Jesus prayed with great anguish in His final hours before His betrayal. The first mention of the Mount of Olives in Scripture was when David escaped there on the run from his son Absalom (2 Samuel 15:30). As David’s descendant and prophesied heir to his throne, it was quite befitting that Jesus would spend His final hours as David did. As David wept over the events that occurred with his son, the Lord Jesus, after a triumphant entry into Jerusalem, retreated to the Mount of Olives to weep over the holy city (Luke 19:28-44). BACKGROUND Jesus is near the end of His earthly journey. In the previous passage, Mark 10:32-34, for the third time Jesus warns His disciples of what was to come as they go into Jerusalem. The Lord foretells that He will be falsely accused, delivered to the chief priest and scribes, and ultimately condemned to death. Jesus lets His disciples know that although He will be beaten, mocked, and killed, He will rise again on the third day. Even as Jesus tells the disciples of the horrors to come, James and John request to have special positions and sit at Jesus’ right hand and left hand when He comes into His kingdom (Mark 10:34-45). Jesus chides them by letting them know that they do not know what they are really asking for, and anyway, the only one who has the authority to give that placement is God the Father. Around the time of Passover, Jesus continues en route to Jerusalem with His disciples; He also has a great number of people following Him to Jerusalem. He stops through Jericho and has an encounter with blind Bartimaeus, whom He later healed and who immediately followed Jesus, too. According to Luke’s account, as Jesus neared the holy city, He knew the people were looking for the kingdom of God to come. Like John and James, in their minds His coming meant immediate political power, restoration, and freedom from Roman rule. Jesus tells them the parable of the 10 talents with a warning He warns those who do not want Him to rule over them that they would be destroyed in His presence (Luke 19:11-27). IN DEPTH 1. Preparation Fit for a King (Mark 11:1-6) With His disciples, Jesus set out toward the Holy City of Jerusalem to celebrate Passover. This celebration marks the remembrance of God’s great act of deliverance of His people from Egyptian slavery with His mighty hand. The blood of an unblemished lamb was placed on the doorpost of every Israelite, and the death angel passed over them. The Egyptians endured God’s final plague for Pharaoh’s defiance. Jesus sent two of His disciples ahead and gave them specific instructions to obtain a colt that was tied up and had never been ridden. Just as Jesus was without blemish or sin, it was fitting that the animal He rode upon also would be untouched. Jesus told the disciples to untie and bring it to Him. When asked what they were doing, they were to say, “The Lord needs it” (Mark 11:3, NLT). Everything occurred just as Jesus said it would, and the disciples obtained the colt on His behalf. Zechariah prophesied that the King would come with

NEWS@RAISETHEPRAISENEWS.NET

great rejoicing, riding on a donkey (Zechariah 9:9). This prophecy was fulfilled; Jesus was able to command attention and to get what He needed because He is Lord. Those who follow Jesus must humbly submit to His authority. We must pave the way for the coming King with hearts that are yielded to His Lordship and is expressed through prayer, praise, and worship. 2. Praise Fit for a King (vv. 7-11) As they brought the colt to Jesus, the disciples placed the cloaks on it as a sign of royalty, and the people began to put their cloaks down on the road. Others cut down palm branches and spread them down on the ground to mark the entrance of the King. Palm branches were used at the Feast of Tabernacles or Festival of Booths. These festivals recognized the time Israeli ancestors, under Joshua’s leadership, dwelt in booths (temporary shelters) formed from the branches of trees; the celebrations commemorated their temporary habitations during the journey through the wilderness. For seven days during the Festival of Booths, there was great celebration and then a time of solemn focus on the Law (see Nehemiah 8:12-18). Palm branches are fruitful and have the ability to flourish in spite of the hottest heat. Yet they can grow tall, and their foliage is able to stay green even in arid places. The Jews use palm branches as tokens of victory and peace, which the coming King would bring to His people. As Jesus entered Jerusalem, a crowd went before Him crying out, “Hosanna,” which is an exclamation of adoration that means “please save us.” As they cried out to Jesus, they also shouted, “Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord” (Mark 11:9). This phrase was prophesied and sung in Psalm 118:25-26. The psalm depicts praise for a great King who is bringing salvation and who will avenge the enemies of God and His people by bringing great deliverance and restoration of order. We, too, wait for this great day of deliverance from the troubles of this world. Jesus is that King and is worthy of every bit of praise that is due to His name. We will appear in the great congregation in heaven, at His throne with white robes and palm branches, to declare His Kingship, as noted in Scripture (Revelation 7:9-10). Every tribe and every nation will declare, “Salvation to our God which sitteth upon the throne, and unto the Lamb” (Revelation 7:10). MORE LIGHT ON TEXT Mark 11:1-11 1 And when they came nigh to Jerusalem, unto Bethphage and Bethany, at the mount of Olives, he sendeth forth two of his disciples, Jesus and His disciples “came nigh” to Jerusalem (Gk. eggizo, eng-ID-zo), which means “approached.” The naming of Bethphage and Bethany was to define the logistics. Jesus sent two of His disciples ahead into the village. This could have been either Bethany or Bethphage. The Greek verb used for “sendeth” is apostello (ap-os-TEL-lo), which means “to send on a commission to do something.” 2 And saith unto them, Go your way into the village over against you: and as soon as ye be entered into it, ye shall find a colt tied, whereon never man sat; loose him, and bring him. Jesus directed the disciples to go and get a colt which had never been ridden, for it would be for a sacred use (cf. Numbers 19:2; Deuteronomy 21:3; 1 Samuel 6:7). They were to bring the animal back to Him. Anything that is used in service to the King of kings and Lord of lords is sacred and should be treated as such. Therefore, even the place we assemble to worship our God (our church building) should be considered a sacred place, and in this light, we must be careful that no sin enters there. We must treat it as a holy place. It must not be defiled by anything that is not pleasing in a holy God’s sight; His house is a house of prayer. Far more importantly, when our lives are dedicated to God, He makes us holy as new creations in Christ (2 Corinthians 5:17). We are His temple, and since He removes our sins and uses us in His service, our lives are sacred to Him. Therefore, our conduct should represent Christ. 3 And if any man say unto you, Why do ye this? say ye that the Lord hath need of him; and straightway he will send him hither. Jesus anticipated a possible difficulty which might arise when the disciples took the animal. Therefore, He instructed them to say to the owner that the Lord had need of the colt and would return it “straightway” (Gk. eutheos, yoo-THEH-oce), which means “without delay” (cf. 1:10), after He had used it. 4 And they went their way, and found the colt tied by the door without in a place where two ways met; and they loose him. 5 And certain of them that stood there said unto them, What do ye, loosing the colt? 6 And they said unto them even as Jesus had commanded: and they let them go. It happened as Jesus said it would. The disciples found the animal exactly as Jesus said; the animal was outside the house and fastened by the door “in a place where two ways met” (Gk. amphodon, AM-fod-on), which literally means “a road which leads round, or a street with houses on both sides.” The bystanders (according to Luke’s gospel, “the owners”) asked the disciples what they were doing there. The reason they were satisfied with the disciples’ answer can possibly be explained by the fact that Jesus was well known in the neighborhood (cf. John 11). They knew that He could be trusted. Therefore, the owners of the colt “let them go” (Gk. aphiemi, af-EE-ay-mee), which means they gave permission to the disciples to untie the animal and take it to Jesus. 7 And they brought the colt to Jesus, and cast their garments on him; and he sat upon him. 8 And many spread their garments in the way: and others cut

down branches off the trees, and strawed them in the way. The disciples put their spare clothes on the animal, and as Jesus rode into Jerusalem, they threw clothing and branches on the road for Him to ride over (see John 12:13; cf. 2 Kings 9:12-13). These were gestures in honor of the King. 9 And they that went before, and they that followed, cried, saying, Hosanna; Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord: 10 Blessed be the kingdom of our father David, that cometh in the name of the Lord: Hosanna in the highest. The people were crying out “Hosanna” which strictly means “please save,” i nvo k i n g G o d ’s s av i n g a c t i o n . Through liturgical use, “Hosanna” was dissociated from its original meaning and was used as a shout of acclamation. It came to have the sense of “praise Yahweh” (Psalm 118:17-27). The word “blessed” (Gk. eulogeo, yoo-log-EH-o) means “to eulogize,” “to speak well of,” or “to praise.” Thus, they shouted out their convictions that Jesus was coming in the name of God, He was bringing the kingdom of God (cf. Mark 1:15; 2 Samuel 7:16; Amos 9:11-12), and He was the promised Son of David. By these acts, Jesus was declared the King of Israel, the fulfillment of the Old Testament prophecies (Zechariah 9:9). Jesus purposely made a public entry into Jerusalem. He came to Jerusalem to die, and He desired that all of Jerusalem should know it. He was about to suffer at the hands of sinful men; the great sacrifice for sin is about to be offered up. He therefore prepared it so that His death was eminently a public death; He died before many witnesses. 11 And Jesus entered into Jerusalem, and into the temple: and when he had looked round about upon all things, and now the eventide was come, he went out unto Bethany with the twelve. Jesus entered Jerusalem and came to the temple. He stayed there looking around at what was happening in the temple area. He stayed in the “temple” area (Gk. hieron, hee-erON, cf. Mark 11:15, 27), and He did not go into the “sanctuary” (Gk. naos, nah-OS, cf. Mark 14:58; 15:29, 38). The Greek prefix peri-in periblepo (per-ee-BLEP-o) means “around” in the sense of a circle. Thus Jesus did a comprehensive inspection, probably to determine whether the purpose God intended was being fulfilled. Instead, the temple was being used commercially by people who owned or ran small businesses. They found it more convenient to use the temple as a means for selling their goods.

“PRAISE CITY” MALE CHORUS CELEBRATES ANNUAL DAY 2011 “Jesus said to them, “Come with me! I will show you how to bring in people instead of fish.” (Mark 1:17) Dr. J. Benjamin Hardwick, the Senior Pastor of Praises of Zion, and The Praise City Male Chorus invite you to join them this Sunday, April 10, 2011, at 3:30pm, as they celebrate the “Praise City Male Chorus Annual Day. The theme the men have chosen is: “CHOSEN BY JESUS TO BE FISHER OF MEN”. (Mark 1:17). Along with the “very special” invitation extended to you, their other invited guests are Carver M.B.C., The L.A. District Male Chorus, Brother Roosevelt Caldwell, Brother Roosevelt Gilkey, and others. The Praised City Male Chorus is under the direction of Brother Louis Monroe, and assisted by Brother Tyjuan Danzler, Drums, and Brother Darryl Golden, Minister of Music. Please join us. We are located at 8222 So. San Pedro Street, Los Angeles, California. You may call the church office at (323) 750-1033 for further information. Do you realize that singing is a ministry within itself, and while it compliments the spoken word, it can also accomplish what is pleasing to the Lord, and fulfill His purpose? Pastor Hardwick has always taught the men “that only God can make them fishers of men. They cannot make themselves fishers of men. God working through the Holy Spirit can enable them to be successful. What is required of them is that they make a decision to leave their nets, and follow Christ”. Dr. Hardwick emphasizes that their job is to cast the net, and trust God for the increase. What will happen when the net is cast into the sea of humanity? You already know: some men never see the net…some men never hear the Gospel of Christ. Some fish dodge the net…some men resist the Gospel, and resist the message. Some fish appear to be caught…yet some men temporarily profess the faith, only later to fall away. Quite a few fish are like the men of Praises of Zion who have been called by God’s spirit working through the preaching of the Gospel, and like those first four Apostles, have been chosen to be fishers of men. May they continue to faithfully cast their nets, and by His grace be profitable servants. To God be the glory! Dr. J. Benjamin Hardwick, Pastor, brother Louie Miller, President, Brother Eural Lauderdale, Vice President, and Sister Clarice Holmes, Reporter.

The FORCE Welcomes You with Open Arms

REV. NATHAN D. KIMBROUGH

Greetings in the name of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. The CHRISTIAN FORCE M.B.C. family of believers extends our hearts and hands to those who are seeking a Word from the Lord. There are many that’s gone out among us today

who are seeking their own glory and praise (Romans 16:17-20) but the “FORCE” is here. The Word of GOD says that in the last days men will be lovers of themselves, scoffers, covetous/greedy and proud having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof (II Timothy 3:1-5; II Peter 3:3-4). That’s why we believe that God has prepared us for time like these. Our ministry focus is to Up-Lift and Build those who are seeking to please God in their Christian walk. How do we do this? By studying the Word. Paul says to Timothy, study to show yourself approved unto God a workman that needed not be ashamed (II Tim. 2:15). God’s Word will Teach, Keep and Guide us as we travel through this barren land. The Holy Spirit is then “The FORCE” that makes all

things possible. HE’s in control and we the CHRISTIAN FORCE family wants to line-up our every effort to please and honor HIM. GOD instructed Zechariah to write, “Not by might, nor by power, but by my spirit saith the Lord of host” (Zech. 4:6). CHRISTIAN FORCE realizes that in this “new” world of thinking, it’s not about us. Our steps are ordered by the Lord and it’s only by HIS Spirit that we can do ALL THINGS. The Demon of Addiction

by Andrea Andrews What a remarkable news story! A wife attempts to stop her husband from driving the family car to his drug dealer in pursuit of more drugs. She hurls herself on the hood of the car and he throws the car in reverse and backs out of the driveway. He sees her on the hood, but continues on his 35 mile journey reaching a speed of 100 mph on a busy highway! A Good Samaritan witnesses the

woman on the hood of the car her husband is driving and pursues them while communicating with a 911 operator. At some point, the husband has to slow down to exit the highway and the wife (whom was caught beneath a windshield wiper blade and had braced herself with the other hand to the wheel well) jumped off of the hood of the car. The Good Samaritan picks her up and rushes her to the local hospital with mere cuts & bruises… While I watched this story, I was grateful to God for His presence in the midst of a seemingly tragic situation. But, what took even greater precedence was the power of demons in the life of someone who has never known God, moved away from Him, or someone who had not fully received their inheritance during the exchange at the Cross where Jesus paid it all and handed us the treasures of salvation. Addiction is a demon greater than any human being can

fight off alone. Those who have never popped a pill, smoked a joint, snorted a line, had a shot of tequila or been sexually promiscuous, tend to turn their noses up at those who have and elevate themselves to a level of superiority. It seems that the word “Addiction” is solely and immediately connected to drugs, alcohol & sex. THIS IS SIMPLY NOT TRUE! Addictions come in many forms…control, laziness, shopping & frivolous spending, gluttony & overeating, foodie behavior, work-a-holic, rage-aholic, choc-a-holic, speed demon… need I go on? Addiction is an impulse which is greater than rational thinking, than selfcontrol, than prioritization, than love for family, obligations and responsibilities. Addiction is a faceless demon which is an equal opportunity solicitor. It doesn’t matter your gender, faith (or lack there of), socioeconomic background, level of education,

vocation, position or political affiliation. It takes hostages in record numbers and will possess a husband to drive 35 miles from his home at 100 miles per hour to get his fix even with his wife as a hood ornament. Under the corporate prayer, we need to remain focused on deliverance from worldly strongholds and if you have been delivered, remain focused on escorting someone else into the fullness of God’s promises. If you are battling addiction, understand that God wants you to lean on Him and trust Him for your deliverance. The natural sense of self doesn’t want to hurt those who love you. However, the demon of addiction has come to hurt your loved ones, destroy you and move onto the next victim! The Bible specifically states that the enemy has come to “steal, kill & destroy”. The good news is he can not be successful with Christ as our defender! Jehovah Gibbor!!!

230,000 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer and 30,000 will die from it. One out of every four African American men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer compared with one of six for the general male population. African-American men also are 2.5 times more likely to die from the disease than Caucasian men. While much research is ongoing to determine the reason for the disparity in occurrence, the primary reason for the disparity in deaths is poor prostate health which results in delayed detection – a failure to be screened for early detection. There are hundreds of denominational and independent ministries in Los Angeles, yet Bishop Frederick Barr believes there is room for one more and on April 3, he and his wife, Rev. Dr. Erica Barr, held the grand opening of Life Church International. Actually, we are just following the direction of God and I believe where the Lord guides, He will provide, said Bishop Barr who holds worship each Sunday at 3 p.m., at McCarty Memorial Christian Church, 4101 West Adams Boulevard in Los Angeles. Also, I don’t think there can ever be too much of the Gospel being preached. Matthew 28 tells me to go into “all the world to preach the gospel” and Los Angeles is part of “All the world”. The decision to start a ministry in L.A. was not spontaneous for the Barr’s who also serve as co-pastors of Power House Christian Center Church International in Pontiac, Michigan; and Nashville, Tennessee. The Lord had been dealing with us many years about the Los Angeles area. About six months ago, the Lord gave me a time that He wanted me to start the ministry and that was at end of March or early April. After much prayer and fasting and research, we began Life Church International, said Bishop Barr. This is a major commitment on our part and we are committed to do it, he said, adding that his focus is not on drawing believers away from their church homes, but to reach the un-churched, especially families of all nationalities. The church really begins with the family. Many people in this day and time do not have a clue who Jesus is. In our day and time, everyone went to church and if you didn’t go, you were considered an outcast. Today, many people hardly go at all. Our goal is to outreach to strengthen the gospel of Jesus Christ. We want to reach all cultures, all nations. We are a multi-cultural church with all kinds of people and we represent the community that we, as a people, live in, said Bishop Barr. The emphasis on the family likely stems from the Barr’s international experience as facilitators for marriage and relationship conferences held in Germany, other parts of Europe, and throughout the United States. Dr. Barr is also author of the book, Relationship Monsters. This year, we’re celebrating 20 years of holy matrimony. We have an anointing on our lives for building strong marriages and empowering families and there is a remnant of people that are hungry for the type of anointing that we have. This is not to take away from anyone else. We have come to add to what God is already doing in this city, said the bishop. He also expressed appreciation for the McCarthy Memorial Christian Church family and said, They are truly disciples of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ and I’m thankful that they would allow Life Church International to come and utilize their facility. Extending an invitation to the community to join them for worship, Bishop Barr said, We want to create a wholesome ministry for all people, all generations and all cultures. We’re excited about it and we want everyone to come. Bishop Barr is also thankful for his long time friends Pastor Doyle Hart (Academy Cathedral) and Bishop Charles E. Blake (West Angeles C.O.G.I.C.). “There’s no better place to be, than Life Church International at 3”. Service Times: Sundays @ 3:00pm. Come and grow with us!
