GREATER ZION PRAYS FOR SUCCESS AT DOUBLE ROCK
It is the intention of Pastor Michael J. Fisher and the Greater Zion Church Family to save a Compton Landmark and to preserve the memory and vision of Dr. Joseph L. Holmes - the founding Pastor of the Double Rock Baptist Church. We have moved on that intention and are in the midst of making a concerted effort to buy the building that
used to house the Double Rock Baptist Church. While we are making strides in our purchasing attempt, we unconditionally believe in the power of prayer. Thus, on Sunday, March 17, 2013 at 3:00p.m., our entire congregation met at the building’s location on Central Avenue and Alondra Avenue. In the spirit of Joshua 6, a unified Greater Zion cara-
vanned around and prayed in the front of the church’s property. We prayed and declared that the Lord will give us unhindered progress, that He give us unusual favor, and that His miraculous hand will give an irreversible “yes”. We solidified our prayers and declarations with a resounding shout! Our faith is locked in! We believe it all to be so! We
invite those supporters that have access to the throne of the Sovereign God to join us in prayer. We also, thank every Pastor, minister, politician, and congregant who has spoken a word of encouragement and solidarity. As the Lord expands our territory, may He do the same for you and yours. ONE FAITH FELLOWSHIP’S NUGGETS FOR THE SOUL EXPERIENCING GOD’S BEST Exodus 23:20- “See, I am sending an Angel before you to protect you on your journey and lead you safely to the place I have prepared for you. (NLT) Let’s first establish that the Lord is speaking of earthly places which should give us hope and expectation during our earthly journey. From this verse we are told that the Lord is directly involved in our lives; for He says, “I will send an Angel”, who will be our Guide and Body Guard to lead the way into the awesomeness which He has prepared for us. The Angel is the Lord Jesus who works directly in our lives or through others includ-
ing our Pastors, Teachers, and Friends, Family members or even strangers. Whomever the Lord sends, He will place the witness in our spirit to follow them. Because we are so precious to Daddy-God; He says “I am sending an Angel” to oversee my precious people; to protect them in arriving to My Prepared Land. Protection will be needed because we will encounter rain, storms, mountainous ground and deserts, enemies and predators. But we will be protected from each of them if we follow our Guide. We will experience the victory over each dangerous and difficult situation. We will safely

survive all of the Fiery Furnaces and Lions’ Dens which we encounter in spite of our Haters. We will safely pass by them. Where He leads me I Will Follow, I Will Trust You Lord and He Didn’t Bring Me This Far
to Leave Me, must become the pillars of our lives. The Lord did not bring us out of those situations that we technically should nave not survived, nor through those times of tears and pain, etc. to leave us midway in the journey. He who has begun a good work in us shall perform it until the day of our last breath or Jesus returns. The Land represents ideal, wonderful, and glorious situations, places, persons, involvements, professional situations, homes and relationships!! He shall continue to work in our lives, guiding, protecting, and providing for us until we arrive at the land
of our blessings. Depending on who is providing a gift will determine our evaluation of the value of it. If persons have expensive and quality-driven taste and possess the resources to facilitate their choices; then we know we can expect a certain high-quality gift. Such is the case of our great Heavenly Father who created the fine, expensive resources of this world! He is having us ushered into the “Land of Quality” which He has prepared for us. We know that we will experience joy, peace and happiness Continued On Page 14

Holy Mission M.B.C. News
From the desk of Pastor Noah W. Payne
Gods will is that we praise him. We are to praise him in spirit and in truth. Pray in the spirit, sing in the spirit, rejoice in the spirit. Romans 8:1-4, There is therefore no
condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the spirit. For the law of the spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made me free from the law of sin and
death. For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own son in the likeness of sinful flesh and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh. That
the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the spirit. Holy Mission M.B.C. is located at 1614 E. 41st Street, Los Angeles, CA 90011

IN FOCUS Lisa and Michael’s son, Timothy, had been on the organ donor waiting list for five years. He was born with a heart defect and needed a transplant. His parents continually prayed for a new heart to become available. The week of Easter, the hospital called and said it had a new heart for Timothy. His parents rushed to the hospital and waited while the doctors operated on him. Lisa became very upset as she thought about the parents of the child whose heart Timothy had received. She could not imagine how sad they must have felt. After 16 hours had passed, the doctor reported that the operation was a success. But until the doctor gave her the message from the other mother, Lisa still could not get those parents out of her mind. That mother wanted them to know that her daughter died but that a part of her will live on in Timothy. Immediately Lisa’s despair turned to joy. We can often get entangled in our own sense of grief and despair. In today’s lesson we will learn that Jesus offers hope to us no matter the circumstances we face. THE PEOPLE, PLACES AND TIMES The Resurrection. After the betrayal of Jesus by Judas for 30 pieces of silver, He was arrested and taken to trial. It was an illegal trial, and Jesus was condemned to die on the Cross. Before they nailed His hands and feet to the Cross, Jesus was beaten, mocked, and pierced by a crown of thorns. His death left His disciples sad and disappointed. Many thought He would be their new king and redeemer. Upon His death, the disciples went into hiding in Jerusalem, afraid that they, too, would be crucified as followers of Christ. Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Mary the mother of James, and other women visited the tomb where they laid Jesus’ body and found it empty (Luke 24:1-11). Peter did not believe the women so he went to investigate the matter. He found the tomb empty and the burial clothes of Jesus folded nicely. The resurrected Jesus appeared to Mary Magdalene in the garden (Mark 16:9). He also appeared to other women (Matthew 28:9-10). These accounts of Jesus’ resurrection appearances, as well as others, confirm that He kept His promise. He had predicted three times that He would suffer, die on the cross, and be resurrected. In spite of all the evidence, some of His disciples still were hopeless and despondent. BACKGROUND After Jesus’ death, all hope seemed lost for many of His followers. They thought Jesus would

and all the people: 20 And how the chief priests and our rulers delivered him to be condemned to death, and have crucified him. 21 But we trusted that it had been he which should have redeemed Israel: and beside all this, to day is the third day since these things were done. 24:28 And they drew nigh unto the village, whither they went: and he made as though he would have gone further. 29 But they constrained him, saying, Abide with us: for it is toward evening, and the day is far spent. And he went in to tarry with them. 30 And it came to pass, as he sat at meat with them, he took bread, and blessed it, and brake, and gave to them. 31 And their eyes were opened, and they knew him; and he vanished out of their sight. 32 And they said one to another, Did not our heart burn within us, while he talked with us by the way, and while he opened to us the scriptures? 33 And they rose up the same hour, and returned to Jerusalem, and found the eleven gathered together, and them that were with them, 34 Saying, The Lord is risen indeed, and hath appeared to Simon. 35 And they told what things were done in the way, and how he was known of them in breaking of bread.
become their earthly king and overthrow the government, thus providing peace for the people. When this did not happen and Jesus was crucified, they did not know where to turn or to whom for help. Two men, one named Cleopas, decided to head back to Emmaus. We do not know what they planned to do when they arrived there; we just know they were saddened by Jesus’ death. However, their seven-mile journey would be interrupted by an unexpected traveler. IN DEPTH 1. Hopelessness and Despair (Luke 24:13-21) On the same day that Christ rose from the dead, two of His disciples start a journey back to Emmaus. We do know the identity of one whose name is Cleopas (Luke 24:18). The other man remains unidentified. Cleopas was not a part of the first 12 disciples Jesus called. It is unknown why the two men were headed to Emmaus, in the opposite direction of Jerusalem. It could’ve been that Cleopas lived there and was headed home after Passover had ended. Or, they may have been trying to escape the danger that existed in Jerusalem. All followers of Christ were under the threat of persecution. That is why the other disciples more than likely were hiding behind closed doors. As they walked to Emmaus, they shared their experiences as disciples of Christ (v. 14). It’s possible that they talked about Jesus’ teachings as well as the numerous miracles and healings He performed. Perhaps they recalled Jesus’ triumphant entry into Jerusalem on a donkey and the people’s shouts of “Hosanna!” Yet, they had experienced that same crowd shout “Crucify Him!” His crucifixion was still fresh in their minds. After all Jesus had done for the people, He was beaten, humiliated, and nailed on a cross between two thieves. Yet, Mary Magdalene had reported the tomb where Jesus laid was empty. The two disciples still could not believe it happened. Perhaps they thought, “Who will lead us? How can we know which way to go? How can we protect ourselves?” While the two men discussed all that happened, Jesus appeared and walked alongside them (v. 15), but they never recognized Him (v. 16). Because they were sad, their eyes were downcast. Jesus
asked, “What manner of communications are these that ye have one to another, as ye walk, and are sad?” (v. 17). Christ knew what they were talking about. Yet He asked them because they did not know who He was. They could not believe He did not know what had happened (v. 18), especially considering Passover had just ended and people from far and near had come to Jerusalem. They all knew about the crucifixion of Christ. Jesus pretended not to know what Cleopas was referring to (v. 19). Cleopas summarized the life and death of Jesus (vv. 19-21). He called Him a prophet and had respect for Jesus as a man of God, but after His death, they were reluctant to call Him Messiah. Jesus had told them of things to come, as well as His suffering, death, and resurrection. Yet Cleopas emphasized, “The chief priests and our rulers handed Jesus over to be sentenced to death, and they crucified him” (v. 20, NIV). The disciples had hoped that Jesus would be their Redeemer (v. 21). The Israelites believed God would send the Messiah that would overthrow the Roman government and free them from bondage. But now that Jesus was dead, it seemed like their hope was gone. They did not know what to believe about the reports of the empty tomb. He did say that on the third day He would be resurrected. The two men did not realize Jesus was the Redeemer of the world that opened the way for all to be redeemed from the bondage of sin and death. 2. Restored Hope (vv. 2835) Because His suffering, death, and resurrection are revealed in Scripture, Jesus scolded the two men for their unbelief (vv. 2526). He then interpreted the Old Testament and explained to them the prophecies that referred to Him (v. 27). The suffering, death, and resurrection of Jesus brought to fulfillment the prophecies of the law, of prophets, and in the writings. As the two men and Jesus approached Emmaus, Jesus continues walking (v. 28). He was not going to continue with the two men unless invited. They urge Him to stay with them because it’s late (v. 29). It is unknown whether it was their home, a friend’s house, or a temporary place of rest. Jesus stays with them and continues the conversation. “And it came to pass, as he sat at meat with them, he took bread, and blessed it, and brake, and gave to them” (v. 30). The meal Jesus shared with the two men was the Lord’s Supper. It is the presence of Christ, at the table opened to a stranger, that transform an ordinary meal into the Eucharist. Based on the language, we can see the similarities from previous meals (Luke 22:19). It is in the midst of Jesus taking bread, blessing and breaking it, and sharing with the men, that their eyes opened (24:31). They recognize the stranger as Christ. Then He leaves. Jesus’ teachings caused their “hearts to burn within” them (v. 32). Jeremiah 23:29a (NIV) states, “Is not my word like fire .
. . ?” God’s Word is so powerful that it can illuminate even the darkest place of the soul. These two men had experienced sadness and hopelessness, until the Word and sacrament were shared with them. Jesus restored their hope. The two disciples returned to Jerusalem that night and witnessed to the 11 apostles and the other disciples, both men and women (Luke 24:33). Just as the two disciples entered the place where the apostles and others had gathered, the apostles declared, “The Lord is risen indeed, and hath appeared to Simon” (v. 34). In spite of Simon Peter’s denial, Jesus appears to him first to communicate His love and grace toward Him. Paul mentions in 1 Corinthians 15:5 that Jesus appeared to Cephas, Peter’s Greek surname. The two disciples who had just arrived witnessed to others about their encounter with Jesus on the road to Emmaus (Luke 24:35). Their witness along with the others offered hope and encouragement to the believers. SEARCH THE SCRIPTURES 1. Why did the two men not recognize Jesus (Luke 24:16)? 2. How did Jesus reveal Himself to the two men on their way to Emmaus (vv. 27, 30)? DISCUSS THE MEANING Once Jesus broke bread with the two men, they recognized Him. What significance does the breaking of bread (the Lord’s Supper) have in helping us to remember Christ?

LESSONS IN OUR SOCIETY
In today’s society, it is very easy to become despondent over the problems of life. Many people are unemployed, houses are in foreclosure, crime is rampant, and wars and uprisings continue around the world as well. How do people react when in despair? What can we do to offer them hope? MAKE IT HAPPEN This week, we may encounter people who are experiencing difficulties in their families, financial problems, sickness, grieving the loss of a loved one, etc. We can show compassion toward others by listening to them and sharing the message of the Gospel. The two men in our Scripture lesson went from being hopeless to hopeful. Then they returned to Jerusalem to share the news of the Resurrection with other disciples. We, too, have a message of hope for a hurting world to share wherever we go. MORE LIGHT ON TEXT Luke 24:13-21, 28-35 Introduction: After the account of Jesus’ ministry up to His death, Luke gives details on postResurrection events. Jesus died before the Sabbath and the women could not embalm His body because of the Sabbath, so they waited. Early the next morning, the women went to the tomb and found it emp-ty. Two men (angels) dressed in white told them that Jesus arose from death. When they returned from the tomb, they reported to the 11 disciples and other followers. After the report of the women, Peter went and witnessed the emptiness of the tomb. The disciples were mourning the death of Jesus and they were so desperate, it was hard to convince them that He has risen.

13 And, behold, two of them went that same day to a village called Emmaus, which was from Jerusalem about threescore furlongs. After the women’s report and Peter’s confirmation, two of the disciples decided to go to the village of Emmaus which was about 11 kilometers (“about threescore furlongs”) from Jerusalem. The precise location of Emmaus is uncertain because there are two possible sites that we know of today. The disciples’ motive for going there is not known. They may have been residents of Emmaus and prevented by the Sabbath and the surrounding events from getting back to their village. Their journey took place on the first day of the week. The phrase “that same day” indicates that this event took place on the day the women went to the tomb. Chronologically, it came after the women’s visit to the tomb and probably came after Peter and John’s visit to the tomb as is made clear later in the text. 14 And they talked together of all these things which had happened. 15 And it came to pass, that, while they communed together and reasoned, Jesus himself drew near, and went with them. 16 But their eyes were holden that they should not know him. The two disciples discussed the report of the women and that of Peter. The subject of their discussions was not only on the empty tomb but also more on the succession of events since the betrayal of Jesus. Jesus likely joined them early in their journey. They should have rejoiced because the one whom they were discussing has joined them and is alive. However, they were kept from recognizing Him. The Greek wording used in verse 16 says that their eyes were “holden” (krateo, krat-EH-o), meaning “restrained” from recognizing
1-888-290-7277 Him. This prevention is either coming from their unbelief due to their sorrow—because Mark 16:10 mentions that the disciples were mourning and weeping—or it may be that God intentionally prevented them from recognizing Him. Mark, also referring to this event, said that Jesus “appeared in another form” (Mark 16:12). It is certain that the prevention from recognizing is partly due to the disciples’ unbelief and sorrow. 17 And he said unto them, What manner of communications are these that ye have one to another, as ye walk, and are sad? Jesus’ question was a probing inquiry. He knew what they were discussing. Jesus knew the thoughts of His disciples and His audience before these people even spoke (see Matthew 12:25; Mark 12:14-15; Luke 9:47). Jesus knew the subject of their discussion but more than that, He knew their state of mind. In reaction to Jesus’ question, they expressed their discouragement and sorrow. Their hearts were not at peace. Jesus knew their doubts, and He wanted to provide them with healing. Jesus knows what we are going through before we even speak to Him; however, He still expects us to tell Him our concerns through prayer. 18 And the one of them, whose name was Cleopas, answering said unto him, Art thou only a stranger in Jerusalem, and hast not known the things which are come to pass there in these days? In reply to Jesus’ inquiry, one of these disciples named Cleopas was concerned. Much is not known about this disciple apart from the mention of his name. His reply to Jesus tells us the extent to which the public knew about the events concerning Jesus’ trial and death. The nominal phrase “only a stranger” suggests that
NEWS@RAISETHEPRAISENEWS.NET even strangers were informed of what went on during the Passion Week. It was therefore a surprise for these two disciples to meet someone leaving Jerusalem as they were who was not well-informed about the situation. The “things” that happened will be told to their companion in verses 19-20. “These days” do not include this particular day. They may be referring to the day of Jesus’ triumphal entry in Jerusalem up to His burial. The event of the missing body in the tomb was fresh news not yet known to the public. Matthew says that the guards went to tell the official in town, but they were bribed not to speak about it (Matthew 28:11-15). 19 And he said unto them, What things? And they said unto him, Concerning Jesus of Nazareth, which was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people: 20 And how the chief priests and our rulers delivered him to be condemned to death, and have crucified him. Jesus asked for clarification about the things that happened. The disciples clarified their concept of things that occurred to Him: They spoke of things that happened “Concerning Jesus of Nazareth, which was a prophet” (Luke 24:19). They then gave a powerful testimony of Jesus’ words and deeds. John’s account includes the reinforcement from the temple guard, sent to arrest Him, who testified that no one had the speaking ability of Jesus (John 7:46). Jesus Himself, in addressing His disciples, told them that the Jews were more guilty because He had done things no one ever did among them in order to convince them (see Acts 11:15-18). Though the first part of the two disciples’ summarized biography of Jesus was full of hope, Luke 24:19-20 still set a tone of
despair by the usage of the past tense. The content of verse 20 gives the disciples’ reason for using the past tense. The chief priests and the rulers handed Him over to be sentenced to death. The expression “delivered him” explains the transfer of Jesus to Roman authorities by the Sanhedrin to be crucified because the Jews had no authority to put someone to death (John 18:31). Unlike Jews who carried out executions by stoning as ordered by the Law of Moses, the Roman form of capital punishment was crucifixion. The crucifixion of Jesus seems to be the end of the story for these two disciples. 21 But we trusted that it had been he which should have redeemed Israel: and beside all this, to day is the third day since these things were done. Their hope was based on Jesus delivering Israel from Roman occupation. They misunderstood the Messianic role of Jesus. They might have been influenced by the prevailing ideas about Christ among the Jews. “The third day” was a date Jesus gave to His disciples as the day of His resurrection from the death. Predictions have meanings when they are kept and considered faithfully. Daniel could recognize, for example, that the 70 years of the Israelites’ captivity was over and decide to intercede for the people in exile (9:1-3). Here, it is possible that the disciples’ sorrow has made them forget even the predictions of the Resurrection on the third day because the angels reminded the women of what Jesus had told His followers (Luke 24:6). Even with this reminder, the two disciples’ situation did not allow a proper attitude of

expectation like Daniel possessed. The third day was a promised day that they should have eagerly awaited, but sorrow and distress made them forget its promise. 24:28 And they drew nigh unto the village, whither they went: and he made as though he would have gone further. After the answer of the disciples to Jesus’ question, we are now at the gate of the village of Emmaus. Before that, Jesus rebuked them and gave them a lecture on the fulfillment of Scripture concerning His life. But His explanation did not arouse their attention. When they reach Emmaus, Jesus acts as though He will continue His journey. 29 But they constrained him, saying, Abide with us: for it is toward evening, and the day is far spent. And he went in to tarry with them. Because it was getting late, the men urged Jesus to stay the night with them. Hospitality is part of Jewish culture, as we can remember, for instance, Abraham accommodating the stranger in Genesis 18:2-5. This emphasis on hospitality is significant for our time; the practice of this virtue is rare. Individualism, mistrust, sad experiences of many hosts with their guests, fear of strangers, lack of free time, and other reasons can discourage many Christians from extending hospitality. We should be encouraged to practice hospitality with caution and by the discernment the Spirit grants to believers. The hospitality these two disciples offered to Jesus strongly suggests that they are from Emmaus. If that were not the case, it would have been difficult for them to host someone else had they been guests themselves. One argument that favors this view is that they almost “constrained” Jesus to stay with them (Luke 24:29). Another argument that supports it forcefully comes from John 11:55, which states that many people from the villages went to Jerusalem for the Passover. The powerful way Jesus explained the Scripture to them had certainly played a role in their invitation also. They might have been willing to hear more and the sudden parting of their companion would have deprived them. 30 And it came to pass, as he sat at meat with them, he took bread, and blessed it, and brake, and gave to them. While on the Emmaus Road, the disciples fail to recognize Jesus. Even His explanation
from the Scripture and verbal rebuke could not help them. For this reason once they got indoors and were about to eat, Jesus took the responsibility of sharing the bread. This was the responsibility of the host, not the guest. It’s possible that Jesus chose to break bread as an allusion to His previous act of doing so (Luke 22:19) to give the men a hint of His identity. It could also be that when Jesus was handing the bread to them, He provided further evidence though view of the scars in His hands. Whatever the case, this scene would bring them back to their senses. 31 And their eyes were opened, and they knew him; and he vanished out of their sight. Their eyes, which had prevented them from recognizing Jesus, were enlightened now by the act of the breaking of bread. Now that they saw the resurrected Savior, they no longer needed to doubt the testimony about the empty tomb from the women or Peter. Instead, their own eyes had seen the Savior. However, they did not enjoy His presence for long because He disappeared from their sight. This disappearance does not make Jesus’ resurrected body immaterial. Had it been so, He could not have eaten with them. In addition, we know that Philip was taken away after baptizing the Ethiopian eunuch (Acts 8:39). Though some suggest it was not a supernatural occurrence, the testimony of Jesus’ different appearances and sudden disappearances testifies that it was supernatural and may be a characteristic of the resurrected body. 32 And they said one to another, Did not our heart burn within us, while he talked with us by the way, and while he opened to us the scriptures? Now that the disciples have recognized Him, they then analyze their journey as having the companionship of a stranger who talked to them. Not only did their “heart burn within” them, but Jesus also gave them an opportunity to increase their under-

FOUR VOICES FROM AROUND THE CROSS Dr. LaMont King, Friendly Friendship B.C. Pastor Shane B. Scott, Macedonia B.C. His explanation of the Scriptures was progressive. Jesus probably used the scriptural prophecies, and symbols of the Old Testament related to His life and ministry to teach the two disciples. The breaking of bread was the climax of the revelation of Jesus to His unbelieving and sullen disciples. 33 And they rose up the same hour, and returned to Jerusalem, and found the eleven gathered together, and them that were with them, Whatever their reason for coming back to Emmaus, it became secondary in comparison to the news of their encounter with Jesus. They therefore went back to Jerusalem to share the good news with the others. The same people pressured Jesus to stay with them because it was getting late. “The eleven” were Jesus’ appointed apostles; the number was no longer 12 because of Judas’ betrayal of Him. It is not clear where the disciples gathered; perhaps they were assembled in the Upper Room. 34 Saying, The Lord is risen indeed, and hath appeared to Simon. While they were bringing good news to the other disciples assembled, they probably felt an additional sense of enthusiasm because of the news they were bearing: “The Lord is risen indeed, and hath appeared to Simon (Peter).” This suggests that Peter may have gone again to the tomb. He first went there, did not find the body, and was wondering what had happened (24:12). Before leaving for Emmaus, the two disciples had Peter’s first report about the empty tomb (24:24); it is therefore right to think that this appearance to Peter was later. The disciples now recognize Jesus as who He claimed to be: the Christ. The term, “Lord” applied to Him in Greek is Kurios (KOO-ree-os), and is the rendering of the Old Testament Yahweh. In John 20:26-28, Thomas will be the first to clearly state, “My Lord and my God.” In overcoming death, Jesus proves to be the Lord of lords, the King of kings. 35 And they told what things were done in the way, and how he was known of them in breaking of bread. The two disciples then confirmed to the others by reporting their own encounter with Jesus with an emphasis on the breaking of bread. That Jesus has risen indeed is an expression of victory and hope.

Life Evaporated
“You, indeed, have made my days short in length, and my life span as nothing in Your sight. Yes, every mortal man is only a vapor. Selah” – Psalm 39:5
by Andrea Andrews The 39th Psalm is entitled, “The Fleeting Nature of Life”,
as King David reflects on how precious and brief life really is. His authorship (also highly respected by Judaism, Islam, Latter Day Saints and Baha’i Faith), demonstrates attributes tied to a king who was adorned with great introspection, reflection, wisdom and compassion – understanding that the gift of life given each of us is invaluable and not meant to be wasted nor taken for granted.
There is a somewhat popular phrase that says, “Your attitude predicts your altitude”. In other words, how one feels about and behaves toward a certain set of circumstances or situation will determine the overall outcome; whether it works for or against you. So, for a moment, imagine how life might appear if we awakened each day feeling and behaving as if it is our birthday – the way we
feel each year when people go out of their way to make us feel loved, special and celebrated. God wants that zeal and enthusiasm from us each and everyday. Isaiah even speaks of it when he includes “the cloak of zeal” as a part of God’s Full Armor. God not only wants us to serve Him, but to serve Him with zeal and excitement. Yes, battles and challenges are inevitable…but, praising God
through it all shows Him that we believe His promises to us. If life is but a vapor and man returns to dust, we can not afford to waste any time lamenting nor complaining – worrying nor hating. Since God is the “Gift Giver”, we must honor Him and be grateful for each day, each hour, each minute and each and every second He allows us to be receivers of such a perfect gift. FOOD FOR THOUGHT
Are you a Passive Leader
DR. JOYCE HARRELL
As a leader are you willing to put yourself on the line, for the cause of Christ and address
any and all issues that come your way? Or, are you the kind of leader that shies away from conflict? Are you the kind of leader that tries to stay in the back ground so no one will ask you your opinion on what’s going on? If so, it could be a sign that you are not connected to the power source. Have you noticed that when you are operating in the power of the Holy Spirit, you have no problem being bold? When we are working under the power
of the Holy Spirit, it is easy to love everyone, and surprisingly you don’t have a problem when someone seemingly has a problem with you. We have to understand that we can’t be coward soldiers in God’s army. God’s Word says, “to them that know to do good and doeth it not, to them it is sin.” Being passive means that you are not actively taking part, it could mean you are protecting yourself by avoiding some things or issues. But, as leaders we must
be willing to move out of our comfort zones, and be willing to live sacrificial lives. Romans 12:1-2 tells us to become living sacrifices, holy and acceptable unto God, but then it goes on to say that this is our reasonable service. Because of what Christ has done for me, I should be willing to completely surrender and be all that being a Christian calls for. Being a living sacrifice means I let go, give up and surrender my life to Christ, so that He can
use me as He pleases, however He pleases and I do it deliberately and boldly. Dr. Joyce is a lay-person, under the leadership of Dr. Ticey M. Brown, at Mt. Tabor Missionary Baptist Church, where she serves as the Strategic Leadership Director. Dr. Joyce’s mission is to develop servant-leaders and enhance ministries within the Church. It’s Time To Keep The Oil Flowing
LADY DR. PHELENCIA A. WHITE
In order to build bigger, we must think bigger. I recently visited a church celebrating
its anniversary. It was well attended with standing room only. As the time for the offering drew near everyone was encouraged to “give their best gift as unto the Lord”. After the “first call” ended, the money was counted and then a second appeal was made to meet the financial goal. The requested funds came in $1 and $5’s at a time with lengthy delays and continuous appeals.
As I witnessed this, I was reminded of the story of the prophet, Elisha and the widow woman. (2 Kings 4:1-7) Elisha, the prophet, was anointed of God with a methodology in which this woman would have her needs met in ways she could not have never imagined but the spirit of TRUE COMMUNITY was a necessary component of God’s plan for her provision. Oil was the
provision she sought, so Elisha instructed her to gather as many vessels as she could even borrowing them from neighbors or friends. We are God’s vessels not to be owned by any man. As the widow asked for help from others in obedience to the instruction of the prophet, she continued to receive and when there were no other vessels to fill, the oil ceased. Shortly after the offering, ap-
proximately fifteen representatives from various churches were allowed the opportunity to share their upcoming events all scheduled to take place all over town in the same month. Reflecting on the financial needs of our churches today in light of God’s methodology as implemented through Elisha, Continued On Page 15

it would seem that something is missing. Could it be that it is our TRUE SENSE of COMMUNITY is off from God’s perspective amongst us as believers? Could it be that we are more focused on promoting our own individual agendas rather than focusing on TRUE FELLOWSHIP to promote the agendas of God? Is it truly our heart to bring everything into
a common storehouse (Malachi 3:7-10) where all needs will be met for God’s glory (Acts 4:3135)? What transpired in that service with is far too common.
