Extending Your Global Reach An education is about breaking boundaries – of preconceived notions, unquestioned assumptions, and firmly-held beliefs. In our increasingly interconnected world, an education now also requires stepping beyond the border – of New Jersey, of the United States – and experiencing a different way of life, a different way of viewing the world. The Center for Global Education is dedicated to helping you cross that border. We are part of the Rutgers Centers for Global Advancement and International Affairs, whose mission is to expand worldwide research collaborations, strategic partnerships, opportunities for learning, and services to our international community members. In this brochure you will find international programs in all kinds of academic areas, of different lengths and locations. We hope it inspires you to come in to see us – we’ll help you figure out the rest!

Planning Your Time Abroad It’s never too early to start planning to study abroad. Shortterm programs in the winter and the summer are available to you already in your first year at Rutgers. In fact, the summer after your first year is an excellent time to get started on your international experience in a structured setting, usually with a Rutgers group led by a Rutgers faculty member. Semester and academic year study abroad are available to you starting in the spring semester of your second year until you graduate.

Deadlines Session Fall/Academic Year Summer Spring/Winter

Where to Go There are over 120 Rutgers programs to choose from. Are you looking to gain fluency in a foreign language? Get a different perspective on your major? Experience an entirely different culture, or view artistic and historical monuments up close? Do valuable research on-site? This viewbook is meant as a guide to get you started. We are constantly adding new programs and major options exist beyond what is listed here. Our study abroad advisors are available to discuss your goals and find the best possible program based on your interests and academic needs. To ensure credits count towards your degree requirements, we encourage you to consult with your academic advisor for additional academic planning.

Application Available January January July

Application Deadline March 1 March 1 October 1

Eligibility Many programs, even in non-English speaking countries, offer coursework in English, so you don’t need to know a foreign language in order to go abroad. You must be in good academic and disciplinary standing at Rutgers. Some more specialized programs may require certain pre-requisites. Most programs require a minimum GPA of 2.5 to 3.0, though some programs will accept students with slightly less, and some have a slightly higher requirement. Students from other US universities may also apply, though some exchange programs are only open to Rutgers undergraduates.

Financial Aid and Scholarships Rutgers financial aid, scholarships, and loans are generally applicable for semester and academic year programs. Financial aid for summer programs is generally in the form of loans and eligible students must submit a summer aid application by early April and be registered for at least 6 credits. Depending upon the cost of the study abroad program and your eligibility, the aid package you receive may not meet your full demonstrated financial need. Please refer to the Rutgers Financial Aid web page for details about financial aid deadlines and contact your financial aid advisor to discuss your financial aid package. Our website provides a full directory of competitive study abroad scholarships offered by the Center for Global Education and Rutgers University departments for Rutgers students. Nationally competitive scholarships are also available through U.S. government sponsored, local, and international organizations. Refer to the Scholarships section of the Center for Global Education website for more information about funding possibilities and scholarship deadlines. It is important to research funding options before you officially apply for a program since some scholarships require you to apply up to a year before you go abroad.

Tuition Remission If you are a matriculated, full-time Rutgers student and a dependent of a Rutgers University employee, you may be eligible for tuition remission benefits.

I gained self-confidence because I spent about 5 months in a country without my family and loved ones. My support and back bone, which is my mother was not there to console me every time I got home sick or felt down, because of that I gained a sense of independence. The service learning program, Global Renewable Energy Education Network (GREEN) brought me to the greenest country in the world. The program’s main goal is to instill in us an appetite to help the world. The one piece of advice I would share with a prospective study abroad student is that exploring the world is incredibly important. The world is a big, beautiful place and there are many stories to be heard, places to be seen and friends to be made. Overall, my experience taught me to be more open-minded and tolerant towards people that are different than me. As I made friends with other exchange students and spent time with them, I realized how insignificant preconceptions/ prejudices/stereotypes are; beneath whatever cultural upbringing, I always saw another human being and a student striving to learn.
