Introduction I am a Third Year Architecture Student in The Dublin Institute of Technology. I find the context driven design process encouraged by the school inspiring and fulfilling. The variety of context explored in the school has ingnited a fascination of different styles & cultures within my own learning experience. My aim is to practice a method of design that respects and understands each context in relation to topography, historical references and the inhabitants. All of the above are approached with equal importance. Over the past three years I have developed an independent method of learning that can also be part of a larger effective team. Working along side others has inspired me to work to the best of my abilities, pursuing aspects of design that I find exciting, challenging and important.

Third Year - “City Within a City. Brugge Begijnhof, Belgium. This project was preceded by a trip to Belgium wherein we carried out architectural research through direct and personal engagement with architectural artefacts. The subjects of our visits and investigations were the Begijnhoven of Western Flanders. These are semi-monastic orders that are run by nuns and still today provide services to the community. Our research was documented and presented through highly detailed drawings and models. Following on from this, we were then tasked with making a new piece of the begijnhof- a new piece of both cities. The typology was made into three components. - Fabric - Object - Garden Our design would be based on the same triad as well as obvious parralells with the communal, social and spatial aspects of the typology.

Bruges Design Brief Bruges will be providing Housing, an Adult Education Centre, a Medical Clinic and a Garden. Primarily for the retired Nuns, but also the wider community. Fabric- Terraced Housing Object- Education Centre & Clinic Garden- Rose Garden A personal learning objective in this project was how to provide privacy for the Nuns alongside the public aspect of the Education Centre & Clinic. It became apparent that areas for outdoor activities and relaxation would become the focal point for interaction between both parties.

Third Year Design Dissertation. “An Exploration of Human Interaction Through The Interstitial Space” - Mallow Adult Education Centre. The aim of the Architectural Design Dissertation module is to provide an assessment of the student’s abilities to reflect, analyse and synthesise architectural concepts and ideas.

The town of Mallow in Co. Cork was studied by the class, collectively creating working drawings and models of the Urban Context. Each student then decided on the following, - Site - Theme & Type The Illustration summarises the various components that form the Design Dissertation.

Hausmann Architekten

Westpark Education Centre

Theme: Human Interaction

Questions: How do we create an architecture that is rid of the formalities and protocol of previous generations? How do we create the anti- institution? We must then focus on a new form of encouraging and informal spaces. Selflearning and co-learning are to be facilitated. However we must also provide for leisure, enjoyment and socializing amongst students.

Mapping

Urban Context: This was a study of Mallow Town carried out by the whole class.

Typology: Adult Education Centre Adult education is born to encourage those who have not previously experienced education or have at some time, but did not wholly enjoy their experience. Many adults who do not follow their education to completion are resentful of the schools or institutions they were once part of.

URBAN CONTEXT

The vehicle for the module is a complex urban condition which offers a number of opportunities to engage in architectural design, from the theoretical to the practical, from landscape to conservation, from new build to adaptive re-use.

THEME & TYPE

It is also designed to expose the student to the rigor of initiating a project, developing it and executing it to meet various demands of theory and practice. This will include; case studies, site selection, programme and project development, critical reasoning and self critique.

Montessori Primary School

It was necessary to consider the work of our predecessors, examine the vices and virtues of contemporary and historic school design and how they can influence the design of Mallow Adult Education Centre.

The gathered information was then used to make decisions on site selection, with reference to factors such as:

ARCHITECTURE

This section concentrates on the cultural context within which the work is placed. This means that your work should be compared with similar work by other architects.

ENVIRONMENT

DESIGN PRESENTATION

For the purpose of this study I studied four principal areas of environmental science that affect the building.

Each student was required to have detailed drawings of Windows, Eaves and Foundations.

• Lighting • Thermal effects • Energy use • External Environment

This component of the Design Dissertation also allows for self critique.

To clearly portray the development of design I felt it was most useful to document the work similar to a diary. These are few of many sketches & Models that accumulated over a 7 week period until the final presentation. It became apparent through this process that the space in- between classrooms, libraries and canteens etc, would facilitate interaction and provide oppurtunities for self learning. Rigid formalities of instututional school design were forgotten in favor of open plans, that still provide areas for the individual.

MEDS Global Green

Process

MEDS is an interdisciplinary design workshop that took place in Dublin for two weeks in August 2014. Various workshops were organised ranging from clock making to furniture design with concrete canvas. I participated in The Wooden Furniture workshop where well reknowned Irish designer Gildas O’ Laoire led a team of European Design Students to build what he called “The Conversation Collection”

Clamping & Mortice & Tenon

We were tasked with understanding four valuable techniques. - Steam bending. - Lamination over form - Mortise and Tenon jointing - Basic upholstery The three pieces are made using the same laminated component which is repeated cut and arranged in different formations to create individual seating solutions. Each piece was sanded and oiled until completion. The group agreed in the early stages of the project that we would like to test the seats in public places and see how they would sit in an outdoor urban context. The pieces were then installed in The Chocolate Factory Gallery in Dublin and auctioned in aid of The Simon Community Charity for Homeless people.
