Louisiana Rubber Down Biker Magazine is staying its course to become the “Geaux-To Guide for the Independent Biker. In this issue, we are introducing several new monthly columns to help us achieve that goal. As our distribution is quickly spreading state wide, we will have writers from New Orleans, Alexandria, Baton Rouge, Lake Charles and Lafayette amongst others. We will now have two pages dedicated as our “Throttle Cam” where you, the reader participate by sending in your pictures of events, bikes, both the little and big things that interest bikers. We will be dedicating another page to Ladies in Leather, written by lady bikers. As riding season is upon us, we ask that you help us out by sending in your events, benefits, poker runs and rallies so that we can keep up to date on providing our readers with an extensive listing of places to go, people to see and things to do. In a more light hearted manner, we now have the “Round About” column where we are on the go meeting new folks, taking pictures and giving everyone a chance to see what we are about. Lots going on with the magazine and new direction, so want to extend a warm thank you for those of you giving us your support along the way. Until next time, ride safe, ride sober and remember to keep your right hand cranked and your “Rubber Side Down”. Constance M. Drew, MBA CEO Rubber Down LLC “Rubber Down Biker Magazine”, the Geaux-To Guide for the Independent Biker

Night Riding – There’s a few instances where, I’m sorry to say, I don’t prefer to ride my motorcycles and to no surprise to those who know me, riding at night is something I avoid. In my opinion, riding at night decreases my chance of survival on the road. However, if I have to ride at night I force myself to be more vigilant. Your experiences may differ, so I challenge you to add to the list below. • Increase visibility by wearing bright contrasting protective clothing. There are a variety of high-visibility motorcycle clothing on the market that have reflective materials. Visit your local motorcycle shops and check out the line of gear. You’ll be amazed at the new stuff out there. • Don’t over-ride your headlights – Simply put, total stopping distance exceeds sight distance. This is more evident on hilly roads. • My motorcycles have a lot of lights on them; front, sides and especially in the back. In my experience, the brighter you are without being discourteous or overbearing, the better people can see you and they tend to pay attention to what THEY are doing without getting annoyed at the rolling light show. Yes, you can be too bright. • Don’t engine break at night – An example of engine breaking is the technique used to slow your motorcycle down by downshifting one gear, easing out the clutch to engage that lower gear which in-turn slows the motorcycle without using the brakes. ** Not using brakes = No brake lights • Use headlights from the vehicle in front of me to illuminate the roads farther than my motorcycle headlights would do if I were alone. Stay on well-lit roads, shadows can unexpectedly become reality pot-holes. • Lane position – As weather permits, Ride in the middle of the lane which increases your safety margin for any potential hazards. SLOW DOWN is the key. • Recently I learned – DON’T ride with the hazard lights on in the fog at night. People behind you have a difficult time seeing anything since the fog tends to make a kaleidoscope effect out of the lights. The best rule of thumb, don’t use the hazard lights unless your pulled over and stopped. Regards, Jerry Maye MSF RiderCoach, Rider’s Edge Instructor

Tip of the Month: How to Pick Up a Bike. Story and photos by Bruce LeBlanc
Sooner or later you are going to drop your bike. Don’t Panic and Don’t let it fall on you. Many bikes have a sensor that will kill the engine if it detects the bike fell over on its side. Turning the ignition switch to the off position will reset the sensor. It doesn’t matter what side the bike fell over on. Lifting will require the same method. The only exception is if the bike fell over on the right side you can make sure the bike is in gear to prevent rolling while you are lifting it and also extending the kick stand. This will keep the bike from going too far and fall over on the other side if you over lift. First thing!!!! Is there anyone around that can help you lift the bike? Get help if it’s available. Bikes can weight 800 pounds or more. There are two methods to lifting a bike. I always use the first one because it’s the best way for me.
Method 1 Stand with your back facing the bike. Squat down and rest your butt against the seat. Place your left hand on the handlebar grip closest to the ground. Place your right hand on the frame or saddlebag crash bar if you have one. Use your legs to push back on the bike as you lift walking it to the upright position. Now the bike should be standing. Turn towards the bike before placing it on the kickstand. If the bike was lying on the left side you will need to extend the kickstand.
Method 2 Stand sideways to the bike facing forward. Place both hands on the handle bar grips. Bend your knees and use your legs. Push in the direction you want the bike to go as you lift. Walking the bike into the upright position. Then let it down on the kickstand.
The photos illustrate the safest way to pick up a bike. I would like to thank the officers of the Livingston Parish Sheriffs Office for the demonstration. 8 Rubber Down / April 2014 / www.rubberdownmagazine.com

ABATE Legislation at work It has been a busy month for ABATE leaders who have contacted and met with our State Legislatures. We now have several bills related to motorcycles. House Bill 106 refers to the improper display of a vehicle’s license plate. This will cover trailers as well as self-propelled vehicles and refers to a license plate that is not properly mounted (hanging from temporary wires or line), is not clearly visible, is not lighted properly, or is hanging too low. There were comments that this may also refer to license plates mounted vertically instead of horizontally, and not mounted in the rear of a vehicle (such as a plate mounted to the side of a motorcycle’s rear wheel and not to the rear fender). There is nothing in the bill at this time specifying motorcycles, but it should be watched. Senate Bill 317 requires certain law enforcement agencies to establish procedures that prohibit checkpoints where the only vehicles subject to inspection are motorcycles. This does not stop motorcycle only checkpoints; it just requests established procedures for these stops. This bill must be watched, with future requests to halt discrimination procedures that affect motorcycles only. And now for the one everyone has been waiting for. Senate Bill 406 exempts certain persons twenty-one years of age or older from the requirement of wearing a motorcycle helmet. However (and it is an important However), the operator must have satisfactorily completed the Motorcycle Safety, Awareness, and Operator Training Program operated by the Department of Public Safety and Corrections, and maintain a motor vehicle liability policy in the amount of $20,000 because of bodily injury to or death of one person in any one accident, $40,000 because of bodily injury to or death of two or more persons in any one accident, and $25,000 because of damage to or destruction of property of others in any one accident. It is not ideal, but it is a start, and something that legislatures may support. Please contact your legislatures for these and other motorcycle related bills. And, check regularly www.abateoflouisiana.org for updates and more information.

(3 weeks – 8,800 miles) To many a bikers this would be the road trip of a lifetime, but to me it would define who I am. What many people didn’t know back then was I was dealing with the loss of my wife of 7 years who died at the age of 36. Emotionally I was in pretty dire shape. I just wanted to get lost. So after visiting my brother Gene I rode out of town heading west then north then west again. I was in Amarillo Texas by morning making my way to I-40. I made a detour to Route 66. Which I rode till I was forced back onto the interstate. It was mid summer and very hot. I had a lot on my mind and not being able to come to grips with my grief. I felt like Forrest Gump. I just kept riding and riding. I stopped for gas and food and bathroom breaks and rode on. I ride a 2008 Kawasaki Nomad 1600 5 speed. I have a cruiser that came stock with a really comfortable seat. I arrived in Arizona speeding past a mobile speed camera…. No worries cause my cargo was hanging over my plate. I went on thru the Painted Desert and Petrified Forrest, which was worth seeing. The sky there was so blue and the red rocks that made up the mountains was worth photographing. During my visit I befriended a pretty female ranger who told me that people would steal the petrified wood as souvenirs. She said they have a sign before the bathrooms near the exit that tell guest to prepare to have your vehicles searched. She said almost everyone uses the bathrooms before leaving. We recover lots of petrified wood in the bathrooms. She laughed saying we never search peoples cars. Next stop is Winslow Arizona where they have a meteor crash site. It’s called the Barringer meteor crater. It happened over 55,000 years ago. I was amazed as to the size of the crater. They said the meteor was the size of a 1970 Voltswagon Bug. I said to the tour guide “ I bet that woke the neighbors”. She also said that nothing grows in the crater. They assured me I wasn’t going to be glowing green after I left. Now heading into Flagstaff where I checked in to a Motel 6.
I no sooner got to sleep when a train passing behind the motel starts blowing his horn at the RR crossing. I felt like Joe Pesci from the movie My cousin Vinny. The goes on every hour all freakin night. I checked out in the morning and many guest were making comments about the train. I notice at the front desk they warn about the train passing all night. Funny cause that sign was not there when I checked in. After a short ride to the Grand Canyon I was really enjoying the view. Photos do not do it justice. My good friend Bill Blain has been to the GC. He took a lot of photos of it and now I know why. I called him from my cell to let him know where I was and to say what I thought of the G.C. As I wander around the rim of the canyon a family starts trying to talk to me. They don’t speak English very well. They were speaking French. The lady was holding a camera and kept saying picture. I thought she wanted me to take a photo with their camera of them at the Grand Canyon. She said “ NO NO NO. You Easy Rider. We want picture. I realized I was wearing a bandana that had stars and strips on it. So she took my picture with her family by my bike. The kids looked terrified. I’m now somewhere else at the canyon and another family asked me to be in a family photo. They were from Germany. Their English was very good. They also called me Easy Rider. Now I realized I’m the side attraction to the Grand Canyon. I am back on the bike riding toward the Hover Dam and then to Vegas. I make a stop for gas and food. It’s pretty hot. I took off my POW / MIA leather vest. Laid it on the back of the bike. I came back to my bike and rode off some good 10 miles before realizing I’m not wearing my vest. Son of a Beach …I turn around looked everywhere. No sign of it. Then I realize my phone was in the pocket. Now I’ve got no phone and I’m way out west. Not much I can do. Really not happy now. I had a good many patches on that vest. The phone wasn’t cheep either. I make it to the Hoover Dam by sundown. Next Stop - Vegas Baby....To be continued in the May issue. Buck Rogers

This letter is to introduce ourselves to the bikers and motorcycle community in general, to explain just who we are and what we’re all about. First, we are not an M.C., R.C., or Riding Association. We are a 501(C)3 nonprofit corporation certified as a public charity by the lRS. We have one purpose andone purpose only. To be there to help the families of riders who are injured or killed while on their bike. We don’t care if you are a club member or an independent. If you go down, and your family needs help, that’s where we come in.We will help the family or club with funeral expenses if needed, help with medical transportation costs if that’s needed, or, if a rider is injured and hospitalized we will help with such mundane, but necessary, things as paying a utility bill to keep the family’s lights on, or even help with some grocery money, if that is what is needed. We are designed to be there to help in whatever way we can and that we have the ability to provide. Secondly, we do not have memberships as such. lf you ride a motorcycle, then you are a brother or sister in the wind and that makes you a member. We receive no payment or salary from the foundation for what we do. Any and all funds we have are for the help of the fallen and their families. The Foundation is totally dependent upon donations from individuals for what it does. We don’t have government grants or big corporate sponsors behind us. We are people who ride, who saw a real need in our rather extended family of the wind, and did what it takes to take action about the situation. Thank you for your help & support. Sincerely, Tim Tison Co-Founder, Chairman of the Board, Cenla President Fallen Riders Foundation http://www.fallenridersfoundation.net/

Fallen Riders Annual Biker BBQ
It’s time for the Fallen Riders Foundation to do its annual Biker’s BBQ Challenge! Along with the BBQ Cook-off, we will have a Car Show and Bike Show! We’re doing it a bit later in the year in hopes of good clear weather as the entire event is now going to be done outside. We’re using basically the same spot as the Cajun Nationals Car Show uses in the England Air Park (formerly the England Air Force Base). This year, there will be cash prizes and trophies for the top 3 spots in each contest. Hopefully, that will be a good incentive for folks to come out and show off their talents and their machines. We are also very interested in having some local vendors attend and show off some of the best of what’s available in Central Louisiana for car stuff, cooking stuff and bike stuff. We need sponsors, contestants, and attendance folks! So, please help pass the word for us. Thanks much for your help in this. Meet Debbie our Lady Biker. Debbie is a native of New Orleans and somewhat a work aholic having two jobs. She still finds time to ride her red 2013 Harley Fat Boy. Debbie found her passion to ride as a kid on dirt bikes. Fast forward to the year 2010 she still had that desire to ride her own bike. She did what smart motorcyclist do. She took a MSF certified course. She enrolled in a Riders Edge course at the local Harley dealer. Debbie credits her instructors Bernard Enclard Jr and Chris Dunn for teaching her the skills needed to ride safely on the roads and highways that she travels. Debbie started out with a 2008 Fat Boy that traded in on the Red 2013 Fat Boy pictured in this story.
Debbie loves to ride her bike and has taken road trips to the Smoky Mountains, Mobile Alabama and is looking forward to where her bike may take her next. Debbie enjoys the freedom of riding and has made many new friends. Advice she has for new riders is take a Motor Cycle safety course. Ride to your ability and have fun. The staff at Rubber Down Magazine wishes Debbie many more miles of safe riding and may she keep her throttle open, the shiny side up and the rubber side down.

Ladies In Leather
My name is Michelle and I have been driving motorcycles for over nine years. My husband and I took the MSF course in 2005 and as I was racing down the track on my assigned motorcycle I realized that I was destined to ride my own bike. Over the years I have had four motorcycles. My current bike is a 2009 H-D Softail Deluxe. I have customized my bike with a one-of-a-kind paint job, custom floorboards, stainless steel cabling and more. I love when people stop me to awe over my bike. I have driven through Sturgis and the Black Hills, Arkansas, Missouri, Illinois, Mississippi, Texas and Louisiana. Much of Louisiana has been with the Baton Rouge HOG/LOH group. HOG and LOH provide a wonderful opportunity to ride to new places and meet new faces all while hanging out with folks that love doing the same thing!
Sicilian HeRitage Festival Well people, 2014 is in the books, thanks again to all participants and my staff . The independence Sicilian Heritage Festival Poker Run was very enjoyable. The weather was beautiful and the festival was a great success. We had a lot of great bikes, even a few Rat Rods and a T-bucket. We raised a few dollars for the Wounded Warrior Project which I am very proud and thankful to contribute. I would like to thank Louisiana Rubber Down Biker magazine for their interest in this Poker Run. We look forward to 2015 Independence Sicilian Heritage Festival Poker Run the second week in March. We look forward to greater success in the coming years. Thanks again to Louisiana Rubber Down Biker magazine for taking part in this great cause. Ride safe and ride hard! ROUND ABOUT HERE & THERE By Constance M. Drew
Beginning in this issue, we will be going here and there meeting new folks...round about here and there. February and March have been busy months for the Round About Crew here at Louisiana Rubber Down Biker Magazine. Between meeting new people and attending some great events, not much time to put pen to paper..but here it goes.
In February, we covered the Grand Opening of Tayho’s Tavern in Chalmette. There was a packed crowd, and Tia Torres (of Pitbulls & Parolees) was more than gracious with all of her guests. We shared a moment of “biker” unity out in front of the Tavern when Custom Bike Builder Loki, and the twins lined up their three bikes. We will be working out the details for sponsorship of a future bike night with Tia. In March, we meandered our way up to Alexandria to visit with Tim Tison and the Fallen Riders. We were treated as royalty to a cookout, where we were able to meet several fine folks from the area, including Lake Charles. Bikes came and went with good company passing through. We will be sponsoring a monthly column for this fine group and encourage you all to support a most worthy cause. While in Alexandria, we got a chance to visit the Rockin’ C..one of the greatest biker bars ever to be seen! Cory will be opening his doors to the public this month. Had a chance to stop into Plaisance’s Bar in Gretna on Tuesday, March 18th for the SMALLEST BIKE NIGHT WITH THE BIGGEST STEAKS! Met some great folks, chatted about the upcoming Children’s Hospital Toy & Poker Run on May 17th! Want to thank Mensy and Priscillia for their hospitality and some mouth watering steak to boot! As spring sprung forward, so did the magazine with final phases of a new office to accommodate our 2014 ventures. Having the stability of a permanent office will aid the growth we have planned for the upcoming year. Meeting the neighbors has been quite an experience with an array of talented folks in 1940s and 1950s Ford & Chevy restorations right next door. Then, custom bikes, auto mechanics and leather goods round out our cozy little corner. Till next time... www.rubberdownmagazine.com / April 2014 / Rubber Down 23
New Biz On The Block
Story by Constance M. Drew Photography by Bruce LeBlanc The Louisiana Rubber Down Biker magazine had the privilege of being invited to cover the Grand Opening of Tahyo Tavern (2029 Paris Rd) in Chalmette Louisiana on February 22nd. We were greeted by a gracious staff and spent some one on one time with Tia Torres and her twin sons, Kanani and Keli’i. Of course, we wanted to be in front with the “bikes”, so we strolled out and got some great shots of Tia on Loki’s custom bike and the twins on their Suzukis! Turns out the young men are great fans of our two wheeled friends with a little stunt riding in their rear view mirrors. We will be working with Tia, Kanani and Keli’i to put on a “Harleys & Hounds Bike Event in the summer. The history of the new tavern goes something like this... what the heck is a “Tahyo” (tay-your) ? In the desire to keep it “Southern” yet also in the realm of what they do, they found the perfect word to name the bar. The “Tahyo” is a Cajun term for a big, hungry dog. And what better word than to describe the purpose of what this is all about. With the dog rescue being a non-profit organization, bringing in enough donations is a daily battle. Yes, they do have a reality TV show through Animal Planet (Pit Bulls & Parolees), but
money from that doesn’t even begin to scratch the surface of what it takes to run their facilities. Tia Torres, “pre-dog rescue”, had 8 years plus under her belt of working in the bar and country western industry. So literally falling back into “the business” was like getting back up on the horse! Yeah...this ain’t her first rodeo! The night proved to be quite a fun one with some great bands, lots of great folks and delicious food including fresh raw oysters! The house was packed and all had a really great time. Get out and enjoy yourselves while supporting a most worthy cause!! A Trike is a Bike
New fans of Rubber Down Magazine Charlie and Eileen got themselves a three-wheeled motorcycle, which they enjoy very much. Charlie, a Viet Nam era Vet and reserve deputy of the Jefferson Parish Sheriffs Office tells me he has had several two wheeled motorcycles and now rides this 2012 Harley Davidson Triglide. Eileen, Charlie’s wife loves to ride on the trike. She adds that it’s a great ride and that trunk sure does come in handy on spur of the moment shopping trips. She also said the bike handles real well on gravel and the metal grates on bridges. They have taken several road trips all over including Hot Springs Arkansas, Alabama and Florida. They are looking forward to some road trips that will take them thru Colorado and South Dakota. They were quick to add that anyone that cannot ride a two-wheeled motorcycle should check into getting a Trike. There is still a lot of fun to be had with your knees in the breeze.

Desert Island
HOG HUMOR
A man is stranded on a desert island, all alone for ten years. One day, he sees a speck in the horizon. He thinks to himself, “It’s not a Keeping the ship.” The speck gets a little closer and he thinks, “It’s not a boat.” The speck gets even closer and he thinks, “It’s not a raft.” Then, out of the surf comes this gorgeous blonde woman, wearing a wet suit and scuba gear. She comes up to the guy and she says, “How long has it been since you’ve had a cigarette?” “Ten years!” he says. She reaches over, unzips a waterproof pocket on her left sleeve and pulls out a pack of fresh cigarettes. He takes one, lights it, takes a long drag and says, “Man, oh man! Is that good!” Then she asks, “How long has it been since you’ve had a drink of whiskey?” He replies, “Ten years!” She reaches over, unzips her waterproof pocket on the right, pulls out a flask and gives it to him. He takes a long swig and says, “Wow, that’s fantastic!” Then she starts unzipping this long zipper that runs down the front of her wet suit and she says to him, “And how long has it been since you’ve had some real fun?”
“Rubber Down”
And the man replies, “My God! Don’t tell me you’ve got a motorcycle in there!”
Mechanic
A mechanic was removing a cylinder-head from the motor of a Harley motorcycle when he spotted a well-known cardiologist in his shop. The cardiologist was there waiting for the service manager to come take a look at his bike when the mechanic shouted across the garage “Hey Doc, want
to take a look at this?” The cardiologist, a bit surprised, walked over to where the mechanic was working on the motorcycle. The mechanic straightened up, wiped his hands on a rag and said, “So Doc, look at this engine. I open its heart, take the valves out, repair any damage, and then put them back in, and when I finish, it works just like new. So how come I make $39,675 a year, a pretty small salary and you get the really big bucks ($1,695,759) when you and I are doing basically the same work?” The cardiologist paused, smiled and leaned over, then whispered to the mechanic... “Try doing it with the engine running.”
