Lavapiés es el barrio del centro de Madrid donde hace más de dos años he fijado mi residencia y que ha ido ganando una presencia determinante en aquellos proyectos que con más fuerza se entrelazan con mi devenir diario.

Lavapiés is a neighborhood in the centre of Madrid where I established my residence over two years ago and which has gradually acquired a determining presence in those projects most strongly connected with my daily vicissitudes.

Esta zona se suele presentar como la más multicultural de Madrid, (argumento que para algunos supone un aliciente, y para otros un quebradero de cabeza), a la vez que por su ubicación conforma un objetivo tan apetecible como escurridizo para los gestores públicos e inversionistas privados que deciden y juegan a redefinir ciudades desde los parámetros de la rentabilidad inmediata.

This area is usually presented as the most multicultural of Madrid, which is an inducement for some, and a source of worry for others. It is also, owing to its location, an attractive yet slippery objective for those public administrators and private investors who decide and redefine cities from the parameters of immediate profit.

Pero si algo resulta definitorio a la hora de marcar un contraste entre la realidad diaria en Lavapiés y la identidad que los dueños de Madrid pretenden articular como propia de una ciudad que desean Imperial, ordenada y eficiente (y por lo tanto, hipotética, necesariamente “olimpizable”) , es la relación de los residentes en la zona con distintos modos de uso y posesión del territorio.

But if something is definitive for establishing a contrast between the daily reality of Lavapiés and the identity that the owners of Madrid attempt to articulate as fitting for a city they wish to be Imperial, orderly and efficient (and therefore, hypothetically, necessarily apt to be the host city for the Olympics), it is the relation of the area’s residents with different modes of use and possession of the territory.

La ocupación de la vía pública en este barrio resulta, en comparación con otras áreas de la ciudad, fluida, intensa y cambiante, y la percepción imperante del entramado urbano y sus usos por parte de la población, consiste en no entenderlo apenas como una red sobre la que trazar los trayectos que marcan nuestras actividades cotidianas, sino como la extensión natural del hogar.

The occupation of the streets by the residents in this neighborhood, in comparison with other areas of the city, is fluid, intense and ever-changing, and their prevailing perception of the urban environment and its uses consists not in understanding it merely as a network over which to trace the routes that mark our daily activities, but as a natural extension of the home.

Como ejemplo, muchos elementos de mobiliario abandonados en la calle para su recogida por parte del sistema municipal de limpieza suelen ser recuperados por los vecinos, transportados a plazas y aceras donde permanecen, en ocasiones durante días, como improvisados salones que apenas pertenecen a quien decida utilizarlos.

As an example, many elements of the furniture abandoned in the street to be picked up by the municipal cleaning system are usually recovered by the neighbors, transported to squares and sidewalks where they remain, on occasions for days, as improvised living-rooms, only belonging to those who decide to use them.

Este uso del espacio público para ejercer formas de ocio no permitido o para la transacción económica no del todo legal, al realizarse en el seno de una ciudad ultraconservadora, supone un posicionamiento ideológico tal vez no siempre articulado como definición afirmativa, pero que si opera como negación reactiva a los rígidos parámetros de lo permitido.

This collective use of public space for the practice of not permitted forms of leisure or not quite legal economic transactions, when made in the heart of an ultra-conservative city, implies an ideological positioning that is perhaps not always articulated as an affirmative definition, but which operates as a reactive negation of the rigid parameters of what is allowed.

Por supuesto que este uso orgánico resulta, para los gestores de lo público, una situación ante la que extremar la aplicación de las múltiples herramientas de control a su disposición, por lo que la injerencia de las fuerzas de seguridad del estado es constante, en ocasiones irracional y desproporcionada, y siempre más preocupada en atender a los presupuestos ideológicos de los que dictan sus directrices que a salvaguardar los derechos del ciudadano.

Of course, for the public administrators, this organic use is a situation which merits maximizing the application of the multiple instruments of control at their disposal, so the interference of the government law enforcement bodies is constant, on occasions irrational and disproportionate, and

Con esto quiero decir que la presencia policial en Lavapiés es percibida socialmente más como fuerza de ocupación que como servicio público.

always more concerned with responding to the ideological assumptions of those who dictate their guidelines than with safeguarding the rights of the citizen.

Fruto de este antagonismo, en los últimos meses la población de este barrio ha expulsado de sus calles a la policía en dos ocasiones, de forma tan pacífica como contundente, bajo la consiga de “¡Fuera de nuestro barrio!”.

What I mean by this is that the presence of the police in Lavapiés is socially perceived as an occupying force rather than as a public service. As a result of this growing antagonism, in the last few months the population of this neighborhood has, on two occasions, expelled the police from its streets, in a both peaceful and forceful manner, under the slogan “Get out of our neighborhood !”

Estos incidentes han sido gestados como respuesta popular a la sistemática práctica, por parte de las fuerzas de seguridad, de realizar detenciones siguiendo pautas de “racial profiling”, criminalizando a los vecinos del barrio según peregrinas valoraciones de carácter socioeconómico o étnico.

These incidents have been generated as a popular response to the systematic practice of the law enforcement bodies, namely that of arresting individuals following the guidelines of racial profiling, criminalizing the residents according to dubious evaluations of their socioeconomic or ethnic characteristics.

Es destacable que este marcado sentimiento de pertenencia localizable en los vecinos carece mayoritariamente de correlación directa con la idea de propiedad (en su acepción legal), pues se produce en un entorno en el que la mayoría de los ciudadanos viven en régimen de alquiler, y en el que la movilidad y la frecuencia en el cambio de residencia son muy elevadas. (Una de las imágenes recurrentes en el barrio es la visión de un grupo de vecinos realizando su mudanza a pie, de calle a calle, cargando con colchones y otros enseres.)

It is significant that this strong feeling of belonging traceable in the residents generally has no direct correlation with the idea of property (in the legal sense), as it occurs in an environment in which the majority of the citizens live as tenants, and in which the mobility and frequency of residence changes are very high. (One of the recurrent pictures in the neighborhood is the image of a group of neighbors moving house on foot, burdened with mattresses and other belongings.)

Cuando la vivienda se convierte en un lugar de paso, es la calle la que ofrece un mayor garantía de permanencia y una oferta de identidad. Alrededor de esta identificación colectiva con un territorio que no se posee legalmente, y sobre el que apenas se permite ejercer un uso temporal y tasado, planteo el discurso de mi propuesta.

When housing turns into a place of passage, it is the street that offers a greater guarantee of permanence and identity.

II.

I establish the discourse of my proposal around this sense of collective identification with a territory not legally owned, the use of which is permitted only on a temporary and charged-for basis.

El frágil equilibrio administrativo de nuestras ciudades se sostiene sobre una serie de constructos culturales, entre los cuales se encuentra uno en el que, en esta ocasión, he decidido focalizar mi atención: La propiedad horizontal.

II.

La condición híbrida de la propiedad horizontal, a caballo entre la posesión individual y una cierta aceptación de bienes entendidos como comunes, define un consenso que opera como marco definitorio del predio, del edificio como unidad auto-regulada, más allá de su división interna en viviendas privativas o locales comerciales.

The fragile administrative equilibrium of our cities is sustained on a series of cultural constructs, among which there is one I have decided to focus my attention on this occasion: co-ownership of real property. The hybrid condition of co-ownership, half-way between individual goods and a certain acceptance of assets understood as shared possessions, defines a consensus that functions as a framework that defines the urban building, the edifice as a self-regulated unit, beyond its internal division into private dwellings or commercial premises.

Si bien una buena parte de los parámetros reglados que definen a la propiedad horizontal se refieren al funcionamiento interno de los edificios, estipulando los deberes y derechos de los propietarios sobre los espacios, infraestructuras e instituciones comunitarias, son los aspectos de la legislación que regulan la interacción de la finca como unidad autónoma frente al entorno exterior (y los usos prácticos que resultan del acatamiento u omisión de estas normas) los que, por su mayor vulnerabilidad y por la posibilidad de paralelismo que ofrecen respecto a modelos de governanza superiores, considero oportuno analizar en este trabajo.

While most of the regulated parameters that define co-ownership of real property refer to the internal functioning of the buildings, stipulating the rights and obligations of the owners with regard to the space, infrastructures and community institutions, I consider appropriate to analyze here the aspects of these legislations that regulate the interaction of the building as an autonomous unit with respect to the outsider environment (and the practical uses that derive from obeying or violating these norms), owing to their greater vulnerability and the possibility of parallels that they offer with respect to higher models of governance.

Parto entonces de un interés por incidir en los mecanismos de construcción de identidad que alrededor del edificio como unidad, de la calle como conjunto y el barrio como red, se activan en determinadas zonas urbanas, y me parece oportuno articular mi enunciado a partir de los condicionantes específicos del espacio que configura el contexto de mi devenir cotidiano actual.

Thus, my starting point is an interest in influencing the mechanisms of identity construction which are activated in certain urban areas around the building as a unit, the street

Desde el planteamiento inicial de este proyecto, entendí que la intensidad de la voluntad de incisión perseguida me llevaba directamente a una decisión táctica concreta : Mi actuación debería ser articulada desde los parámetros de la agresión.

as an aggregate and the neighborhood as a network, and I think it suitable to articulate this statement on the basis of the specific conditioning factors of the place that makes up the context of my current daily life. From the initial conception of this project, I understood that the intensity of this desire to influence would lead me directly to a concrete tactical decision: my action had to be articulated from the parameters of aggression.

Siguiendo esa linea argumental, y dado que el objetivo de mi práctica era operar ante los condicionantes del concepto de propiedad, el tipo de agresión debería ser, necesariamente, el robo.

Following this line of argument, and given that the objective of my practice was to operate on the conditioning factors of the concept of property, the type of aggression necessarily had to be theft.

Decidí por lo tanto plantear un ataque directo a un grupo definido por una posesión común para, a través de esta agresión exterior, diseñada para ser percibida como gratuita y de origen desconocido, estimular la cohesión identitaria de los atacados.

Thus, I decided to present a direct attack on a group defined by a common possession, in order to stimulate the cohesion of identity of those attacked through my exterior aggression, designed to be perceived as gratuitous and of an unknown origin.

Son innumerables los ejemplos históricos en los que, persiguiendo distintos objetivos, un grupo de intereses opta por realizar secretamente una actividad violenta, diseñada para aparecer como si hubiese sido llevada a cabo por otro colectivo.

There are countless historic examples in which, pursuing different objectives, an interest group opts to secretly carry out a violent activity designed to appear as though it had been executed by another group.

En términos militares, este tipo de acciones reciben, por motivos obvios, el nombre de operaciones de “falsa bandera”.

In military terms, this type of acts has the name of false flag operations, for obvious reasons.

La aplicación canónica de este tipo de tácticas persigue desacreditar a un grupo determinado (aquellos que son presentados como autores materiales de la acción) para de este modo justificar la represión de los mismos, asegurándose además un amplio apoyo social a la hora de implementar las medidas deseadas por quienes en secreto ejercen como inductores o autores, mientras que públicamente adoptan el papel de dedo acusador.

The orthodox application of this type of tactics seeks to discredit a certain group (those who are presented as the material authors of the act) in order to justify their repression and in addition assuring extensive social support to those who are actually the secret inducers or authors, while they publicly adopt the role of the accusing finger.

Pervirtiendo una narrativa ya de por si perversa, mi uso de esta herramienta pretendería, por contra, desacreditar a la víctima de la acción violenta, haciéndolo caer en una presunción de culpabilidad prejuiciosa, para después señalar al verdadero autor del robo: Yo.

Perverting an already perverse narrative, my use of this tool, on the other hand, was intended to discredit the victim of the violent act, causing him to fall into a prejudiced assumption of guilt, in order to later point out the true author of the theft: myself.

El hecho de que el resultado de mi intervención opere dentro de los parámetros del arte contemporáneo y que por lo tanto haya sido generado para ser presentado públicamente, desmontaría, potencialmente, la lógica cuyo mecanismo replico y haría obvia su aplicación en otros aspectos de nuestra realidad.

The fact that my intervention operates within the parameters of contemporary art and has therefore been created to be presented before a public, would potentially dismantle the logic of the mechanism I replicate, and would make evident its application to other aspects of our reality.

III.

Gaining access to a building shared by a neighbor community implies crossing the limits established by property, and therefore usually requires either acceptance on the part of one of the residents or the use of the strategies of infiltration and deceit.

Acceder a un edificio compartido por una comunidad de vecinos implica traspasar los límites establecidos por la propiedad, y por lo tanto, suele requerir o bien la aceptación de alguno de los residentes, o el uso de estrategias de infiltración y engaño.

In the context of the intervention I was designing, any attack on the interior of the building might easily be attributed to one of its residents, something that would produce a result contrary to my intentions, so I reached the conclusion that if the objective was to stimulate a certain sense of identity, my attacks on the property should focus on the exterior equipment of the construction.

En el contexto de la intervención que estaba diseñando, todo ataque realizado en el interior del edificio podría ser facilmente achacable a alguno de los habitantes del mismo, algo que generaría un resultado contrario a mis intenciones, por lo que pronto llegué a la conclusión de que, si el objetivo era estimular una cierta inclusión identitaria, mis ataques a la propiedad deberían centrarse en los equipamientos exteriores de la construcción.

The elements of interaction with the exterior offered by an urban building are few; the balconies, the windows, the door to the vestibule... all of them elements which serve this function of mediation in greater or lesser measure, but

Son pocos los elementos de interlocución con el exterior que ofrece un edificio urbano. Los balcones, las ventanas, la

puerta de acceso al portal... todos ellos son elementos que en mayor o menor medida cumplen estas funciones, pero que se situaban fuera de mi campo de intereses por su inmovilista condición estructural.

which because of their immobile structural condition, were outside my area of interest. Closer to my objectives was a very common element; the intercom, and it was analyzing it that I later arrived at what would end up being the focal point of my intervention.

Más cercano a mis objetivos era el portero automático, y fue analizando este elemento que posteriormente llegué al que sería el punto focal de mi intervención.

The use of the bell, even by individuals whom we know, means an interference into our privacy that, for what I have seen, can be generally perceived as meddlesome.

El uso del timbre, hasta por parte de los individuos que conocemos, puede ser una intromisión que, por lo que he visto, suele ser percibida mayoritariamente como una injerencia inoportuna.

Despite this, and with a simple ring, bank mailmen, postal mailmen, people working for the gas, water, and electric companies, a neighbor who has forgotten the keys, or someone looking for somebody else, can have relatively easy access to the building’s common areas.

A pesar de esto, y mediante un simple timbrazo, carteros del banco, carteros de correos, los del gas, los del agua, los de la electricidad, un vecino que ha olvidado las llaves o alguien que busca a alguien, pueden lograr un acceso relativamente fácil a las zonas comunes de un edificio.

In contrast, advertising mail workers who ring and identify themselves as such, acting as intermediaries between our privacy and the unsolicited offers of services they deliver, are usually not welcome, but despite this they manage to access the mailboxes with a certain frequency.

Por contra los carteros comerciales que se identifican como tales y que operan como intermediarios entre nuestra privacidad y unas ofertas de servicios que no hemos solicitado, no suelen ser bienvenidos, pero a pesar de ello, logran acceder a los buzones interiores con una cierta frecuencia.

Door-to-door mail campaigns are an very cheap advertising system and also a seemingly effective one, given that it has rapidly flourished in the last few years.

El buzoneo es un sistema de publicidad muy barato y, parece ser, efectivo dado que se ha visto proliferar vertiginosamente en los últimos años.

While the final objective of a door-to-door mail campaign is to access the interior of the building in order to distribute the advertising brochures of the contractor in the inside personal letterboxes, the building owners and inhabitants usually do not wish this goal to be achieved, as door-todoor mailing, owing to its constancy, is generally considered invasive and excessively aggressive.

Si el objetivo final de una campaña de buzoneo es acceder al interior del edificio para repartir los folletos publicitarios del contratante en los buzones individuales, la voluntad de los propietarios suele ser que no lo logren, ya que su actividad, por constante, suele ser considerada invasiva y excesivamente agresiva.

The installation of the so-called “advertising baskets” in the exterior of the building has become a common way to alleviate this situation, and it is to do with these elements that I finally decided to articulate my proposal.

Para paliar esta situación, se ha establecido como habitual la instalación en el exterior del edificio, de las llamadas publicestas, alrededor de las cuales finalmente decidí articular mi propuesta.

These baskets are usually rectangular metal containers, open in the upper part, with dimensions that vary depending on the model, but which usually do not exceed 35 centimeters on their longer side.

Estas cestas suelen ser contenedores metálicos rectangulares, abiertos en su parte superior, con unas dimensiones que varían según el modelo pero que no sobrepasan los 35 centímetros en su lado mayor.

They are usually placed in the outside door-jamb of the building’s entrance, anchored to the wall with a simple system of plugs and screws.

Acostumbran a estar instaladas en el quicio externo de la puerta de acceso al edificio, ancladas a la pared mediante un sencillo sistema de tacos y tornillos.

In addition to functioning as filters to the insistent pressure of the door-to-door advertising companies, these elements easily turn into a sort of hybrid between private property installations and public urban furniture, given that, installed in the street, they soon get used as improvised waste paper bins for the casual use of the passers-by, while their maintenance is taken care of by the residents of the building themselves.

Además de operar como filtros ante la insistente presión ejercida por las empresas de buzoneo, estos elementos devienen una especie de híbrido entre instalaciones de propiedad privada y mobiliario urbano de titularidad pública, pues al estar instalados a pie de calle, facilmente se convierten en papeleras improvisadas para el uso casual de los transeuntes, de cuyo mantenimiento se encargan los propios vecinos del edificio.

In my opinion, this grey area where the citizen’s functions and powers and the services that the public administrators attempt to provide overlap, makes these advertising baskets an element with the potential of being a catalyst of the discursive points that I had proposed to develop, so it was based on this object and its functions that I began the design of the intervention of selective attack against certain properties.

Esta zona gris de solapación entre las funciones y competencias del ciudadano y los servicios que los gerentes públicos se proponen asegurar, convierte, según mi parecer, a las publicestas en el elemento con potencial catalizador de los puntos discursivos que me proponía desarrollar, y fue a partir de las mismas que inicié el diseño de la intervención de ataque selectivo a determinadas propiedades.

My aggression would (and did) consist in the theft of the advertising baskets of one building in each of the streets in the neighborhood of Lavapiés.

Mi agresión consistiría (y ha consistido) en el robo de la publicesta de un edificio en cada una de las calles del barrio de Lavapiés.

It seemed likely that, in an exercise of projection, the members of these communities, that is, the owners of tenants of

Es de suponer que los miembros de esas comunidades, esto es, los propietarios o inquilinos de los edificios atacados, en un ejercicio de proyección, atribuirían la autoría del hurto a los a priori culpables de este tipo de atentados contra la propiedad: jóvenes vandálicos, ladrones de metal que malviven de vender chatarra...

the attacked buildings would attribute the authorship of the theft to those who are a priori ruled guilty of this sort of attack against property: young vandals, metal thieves who scrape by selling scrap metal...

IV.

On a practical level, certain previous steps were required to carry out this project:

En el plano práctico, asumir la realización de este proyecto requería unos determinados pasos:

Despite having a defined identity, Lavapiés lacks an exact physical delimitation, since it does not exist as an official administrative entity.

Lavapiés, pese a contar con una identidad definida, carece de una delimitación física exacta, ya que no existe como entidad administrativa oficial.

Thus, some of its streets belong to different bureaucratic demarcations.

Algunas de sus calles, pues, pertenecen a distintas demarcaciones burocráticas.

Although the sense of collective identity of this neighborhood is so obvious, it is not directly associated with any established or even agreed-on physical boundaries.

Aunque sea obvio el sentimiento de identidad colectiva del barrio, no está directamente asociado a una demarcación física establecida o siquiera consensuada.

So, the first step was to define the territory, the group of streets that could be considered Lavapies, and therefore, objectives to my series of attacks.

Así, la primera necesidad que planteaba mi propuesta era definir el espacio, el conjunto de vías públicas que podían ser consideradas parte de Lavapiés y por lo tanto, susceptibles a ser atacadas.

I came to a definition of the neighborhood as the set of streets that spread from Lavapies square , being limited by Magdalena street at the north, Santa Isabel at the west and Embajadores at the east.

Llegué a una definición de mi Lavapiés como el conjunto de vías que se despliegan a partir de la plaza del mismo nombre, en un territorio delimitado al norte por las calles Magdalena y Duque de Alba, al sur por la Ronda de Valencia, al este por la calle de Santa Isabel, y al Oeste por la calle Embajadores.

I counted a total of 278 baskets in these 52 streets. In six of these streets there were no advertising baskets, so the final objective was finally established as the collection of 46 containers.

Según esta concepción de territorio propuesta, el resultado era un total de 52 calles, en cada una de las cuales debería retirar ilegalmente una publicesta.

Once the physical framework on which to focus my activity was established, all there remained to do was to develop a plan of action that, beyond consisting in a series of solutions adopted in order to permit the material realization of the project, combined a relevant part of the concepts involved in the initial proposal.

Contabilicé un total de 278 cestas en estas 52 calles. En seis de estas vías públicas no existia ninguna publicesta, por lo que el objetivo quedó finalmente fijado en la recogida de 46 contenedores.

The period for carrying out this project could in no case exceed 45 calendar days, about 40 work days devoted almost exclusively to this task.

Una vez establecido el marco físico sobre el que centrar mi actividad apenas quedaba desarrollar un plan de actuación que más allá de consistir en una serie de soluciones adoptadas con vistas a permitir la realización material del proyecto, conjugase una parte relevante de los conceptos presentes en el planteamiento inicial.

On the other hand, given the criminal nature of the intervention, it had to be carried out at night. Initially, I opted for committing the thefts in one go; that is, after a prior evaluation, I targeted a certain building as an objective, carried out the robbery, and quickly returned home.

El plazo de realización de este proyecto no podía, en ningún caso, superar los 45 días naturales, unas 40 jornadas de trabajo dedicadas casi en exclusiva a esta tarea.

Acting like this, I managed to rob various advertising baskets without much difficulty, but it soon became obvious to me that withdrawing between two and four screws per box in the middle of the street entailed an inconvenient period of time and a too high level of risk, so I opted for dividing the robberies into two differentiated moments: preparing the ground and the withdrawal of the advertising baskets.

Por otro lado, dada la naturaleza delictiva de la intervención, la misma debería ser realizada durante la noche. En un momento inicial, opté por realizar las substracciones de un tirón, esto es, tras una valoración previa, me marcaba un determinado edificio como objetivo, realizaba el robo y volvía rápidamente a casa.

Thus, in the evening and until the small hours, I devoted myself to “preparing” the baskets. In this first moment, the objective was to take out the maximum number of screws without taking off the basket.

Si bien pude robar varias publicestas sin demasiada dificultad, pronto me resultó obvio que retirar entre dos y cuatro tornillos por caja, en plena vía pública, suponía un lapso de tiempo y un nivel de riesgo poco convenientes, por lo que

opté por dividir los robos en dos momentos diferenciados: Preparar el terreno, y retirar las publicestas.

Generally, I carried out this task on foot, on several occasions while walking my dog, an activity that offered me a certain freedom of movements (and stops), and a justification to wander around the streets at late hours.

Así, durante la tarde y hasta las primeras horas de la madrugada me he dedicado a “preparar” las cestas. En este primer momento, el objectivo consistía en retirar el máximo numero de tornillos sin llegar a retirar la cesta.

The second phase was the collection of the baskets. Once the ground was prepared, it was easier to carry out the theft very quickly.

He venido realizado esta tarea mayoritariamente a pie, en varias ocasiones paseando a mi perra, actividad que me ofrecía una cierta libertad de movimientos (y paradas), una justificación para vagar por la calle a horas intempestivas.

On a bicycle, and avoiding direct routes or particularly watched areas (a complicated thing given the large density of the video-surveillance mechanisms in Lavapiés), I managed to withdraw up to five elements in a single night, although the average was around two baskets per night.

La segunda fase de realización fue la recogida de las cestas. Una vez preparadas, el hurto ha podido ser realizado con gran rapidez.

In addition to the constant possibility of running into the security forces, or being surprised by a citizen concerned about his property or the property of others, a series of specific circumstances turned out to be decisive factors conditioning the thefts; the visit to Madrid of the head of the Vatican government, the social mobilization around what has come to be called the “15-M movement”, and the coincidence in time of my activities with Ramadan.

En bicicleta y evitando caminos directos o zonas especialmente vigiladas (algo complicado dada la gran densidad de mecanismos de videovigilancia), he conseguido retirar hasta cinco elementos en una sola noche, aunque la media viene estando alrededor de las dos cestas por noche. Ademas de la constante posibilidad de encontronazo con las fuerzas de seguridad, o la de ser sorprendido por un ciudadano celoso de su propiedad o de la propiedad de otros, una serie de circunstancias específicas han resultado condicionantes decisivos a la hora de llevar a cabo los hurtos. La visita a Madrid del jefe de estado del Vaticano, las movilizaciones sociales alrededor del que ha venido a llamarse “movimiento 15-M”, y la coincidencia temporal de mis actividades con el Ramadán.

All these events have influenced in the greater presence of the police (and passersby) in the streets during the late night hours; but in some way, they seem to have turned out to be convenient for me, as the officers, observing the specific guidelines of each of these situations, seem to have relaxed in the performance of their routine patrol functions. After being collected, each basket was classified, the street and number of their building or origin recorded on the back part, and images of the buildings and the administrative identity of each property – that is, its property registry number – recorded in a more extensive archive.

Todos estos eventos han influido en una mayor presencia policial (y de transeúntes) en la calle, durante la madrugada, pero de algún modo parecen haberme resultado convenientes, ya que los agentes, al observar las directrices concretas de cada una de esta situaciones, parecen haberse relajado en el cumplimiento de sus funciones rutinarias de vigilancia.

This data will be included in the presentation of the project in the exhibition format, in which all the robbed baskets will be made public, ordered in a linear manner following an alphabetical order of their streets of origin.

Posteriormente a su recogida, cada cesta ha sido clasificada, registrando en su parte posterior la calle y numero de su edificio de origen y en un archivo más extenso, imágenes de las construcciones y la identidad administrativa de cada propiedad, esto es, su número de registro catastral.

I believe it relevant to point out that the venue in which this piece will be presented for the first time is located in one of the streets of the neighborhood of Lavapiés, and that the advertising basket of that building is one of the 46 presented, the management of the venue having no prior knowledge of the fact.

Estos datos conformarán la presentación del proyecto dentro del formato expositivo, en el que se harán públicas todas las cajas robadas, ordenadas linealmente siguiendo el orden alfabético de sus calles de origen.

The simple equipment used to carry out the process described above consisted in an electric screwdriver with interchangeable heads (flat and star-shaped), a manual screwdriver for certain streets in which silence is more important than speed, a bicycle, a dark cap with a wide visor, a largesize black leather bag and an alibi.

Creo relevante señalar que la sala en que se presentará por primera vez esta pieza está ubicada en una de las calles del barrio de Lavapiés, y que la publicesta de este edificio es una de la 46 que se presentan, sin que los responsables del espacio tengan conocimiento previo del hecho. El sencillo equipamiento usado para llevar a cabo el proceso anteriormente descrito consistía en un destornillador eléctrico con cabezales intercambiables (planos y de estrella), un destornillador manual para determinadas calles en que el silencio es más importante que la velocidad, una bicicleta, un gorro oscuro con amplia visera, un bolso de cuero negro de gran tamaño y una coartada.

V. What I refer to as an alibi consists in two separate documents, specific for each one of the two phases mentioned above, that I carried with me at the different times of the collection, and that would presumably serve to be able to explain my activities in the event that the police surprised me in the midst of the process and proceeded to arrest me. For the outings during which my activity focused on the preparation of subsequent thefts, the document was a

written presentation of a fictitious art project that I was theoretically carrying out, consisting in withdrawing the screws of different urban elements in order to subsequently subject them to a fetishizing process of cleaning, a certain way to endow a common object with “excellence”.

Lo que denomino coartada consiste en dos documentos diferenciados, específicos para cada una de las dos fases anteriormente mencionadas, que he portado conmigo en los distintos momentos de la recogida, y que supuestamente servirían para poder explicar mis actividades en el caso de que las fuerzas policiales me sorprendiesen en pleno proceso y procediesen a mi detención.

As it can be seen, it is a narrative in which the function of the artist is limited to an activity that is more or less eccentric, more or less invasive with respect to the property of others’, but charged with a submissive desire to be of service, and that may hardly be considered to have a “criminal” or punishable aim.

Para las salidas en que mi actividad se ha centrado en la preparación de posteriores hurtos, el documento consistía en la memoria de un ficticio proyecto artístico que en teoría estaría realizando, consistente en retirar tornillos de distintos elementos urbanos, para posteriormente someterlos a un proceso fetichizador de limpieza, un cierto modo de aportar, “excelencia” a un objeto común.

When the night outing was directed towards withdrawal of one or several advertising baskets, the above-described narrative would be inadequate, especially in the event of being surprised in possession of one of the bulky metallic containers.

Como se puede observar, se trata de una narrativa en la que la función del artista queda limitada a una actividad más o menos excéntrica, más o menos invasiva respecto a la propiedad ajena, pero cargada de una sumisa voluntad de servicio y difícilmente considerable poseedora de afán “delictivo” o punible.

Anticipating this possibility, the document I carried with me was different, and it stated that, in this case, I would be carrying out a project consisting in the selective collection of a certain number of baskets (much smaller than the real number), that I would take to my residence in order to subject them to a process of cleaning and structural repair.

Cuando la salida nocturna estaba encaminada a retirar una o varias publicestas, la narrativa anteriormente descrita resultaría inadecuada, especialmente en el caso de ser sorprendido en posesión de alguno de los aparatosos contenedores metálicos.

It said that within the period of three days, I would replace the advertising baskets, fully restored, at their original location.

Anticipando esta posibilidad, el documento que me acompañaba era otro, y exponía que, en ese caso, estaría realizando un proyecto consistente en la retirada selectiva de un determinado número de cestas (muy inferior al real), que llevaría a mi residencia para someterlas a un proceso de limpieza y reconstrucción estructural.

Once again, a certain intention of service, of voluntary collaboration of the author with the “improvement” of the deteriorated public environment, was used as a subterfuge that could possibly ring true to the authorities in charge of judging my offenses, in the event of getting caught. In both cases, the false projects were prepared following the parameters of narrative likelihood, simplicity and brevity, in addition to wielding supporting graphical elements and c.v. data that socially legitimated my activity as a professional artist, producing a result similar to the typical documentation devoted to “sell” an art project to any of the institutions or private entities habitually appealed to for funding.

En el plazo de tres días, contaba, volvería a colocar las publicestas, completamente restauradas, en su ubicación original. Una vez más, una cierta intención de servicio, la colaboración voluntariosa del autor con el “acondicionamiento” de un entorno publico deteriorado, era usado como subterfugio capaz de resonar con una cierta credibilidad en los oídos de las autoridades encargadas de juzgar mis infracciones.

These hypothetical projects would be of a voluntarily reinforcing nature and would explore the communication techniques, according to which the important thing is not what is said (and much less so what is done), but what we intend others to perceive.

En ambos casos, los falsos proyectos fueron redactados siguiendo parámetros de verosimilitud, sencillez y concisión narrativa, además de contar con elementos gráficos de apoyo, y esgrimir datos curriculares socialmente legitimadores de mi actividad como artista profesional, generando un resultado similar a la típica documentación destinada a “vender” un proyecto artístico a cualquiera de las instituciones o entidades privadas a las que habitualmente se recurre para conseguir financiación.

They attempted to make believe that the nature of this project does not cross the limits of the ground usually conceded to art: an aesthetic function on an empirical level, in this case, extravagant and, of course, empty, or else a useful public service, in which an approach that is more extensive or that fosters controversy does not usually fit in.

Estos hipotéticos proyectos, serían voluntariamente reforzadores y ahondarían en las técnicas comunicativas según las cuales lo importante no es lo que se dice (y mucho menos lo que se hace) sino lo que se pretende que los demás perciban.

But the truth is that, when all is said and done, this project has to do with creating a common enemy for the various involuntarily involved communities, an enemy who in the end, and surely against any suspicion, turns out to be me.

Trataban de hacer creer que la naturaleza de este proyecto no traspasa los límites del terreno que se suele conceder al arte: una función estética a nivel empírico, en este caso extravagante y, como no, vacía, o bien un servicio público útil, en el que no suele tener cabida un acercamiento más amplio, o potenciador de controversia, del término.

During the final phase of collection, a tag made with white paint on one of the robbed advertising baskets, gave me the project’s title: Polis.

Pero lo cierto, es que este proyecto trata, en última instancia, de crear un enemigo común a las distintas comunidades

involuntariamente involucradas, que al final, y seguramente contra toda sospecha, resulto ser yo. Durante la fase final de recogida, el tag realizado con pintura blanca sobre una de una de las publicestas robadas me ofreció el título del proyecto: Polis.
