Hrishikesh, meandering through the entire process, has choreographed the art works, filling the space with movements and sounds. “As I walked into the space, I felt I was in a valley, amidst soaring mountains; lost yet yearning to explore. The vastness of the space made me aware of myself in the present and pushed me into a future full of dreams and ambitions. A vast, yet safe space, I felt a comfort and a sense of motivation to achieve those dreams and desires. A space, where I felt a void, a void that needed to be filled with the same...” - Hrishikesh.

As Ruby gently treads around the cluttered godown, memories of a thriving mill engulf her. She is both sad and excited. The space filled with decades of rejected memorabilia seemed to invite her.

“It is a journey that started years ago. As I walked through the thriving textile mills, I spotted a pile of rejected vibrant fabric. Excitedly I started converting these into beautiful rugs and consequently training young mothers to make & sell these. Unconsciously a small unnamed social enterprise had started. Using my personal memories of forgotten skills like crochet, quilting, macramé combined with clay, I decided to bring alive the SOUL that was The Mills for me. This entire collection is a response to those memories that were, that I relived as I walked into this space...” - Ruby.

Hrishikesh Pawar, Kathak and Contemporary Dancer, a visiting faculty at reputed institutes across the country, performs and trains aspiring dancers of all ages through ‘Hrishikesh’s Centre for Contemporary Dance.’ “Although I have worked and choreographed to stretch the body and its response to its environment, this collaboration, looks beyond the body movements, and sincerely responds to another medium. The space creates an assurance that communications can happen, both through conversations and profound SILENCE.”

Ruby Jhunjhunwala, a Ceramic & Mixed Media Artist of international repute, dwells into her youth to pick up threads of memories created using different media, and incorporates them into the exhibition.

“This work is an outcome of two different eras, art forms, medium, worlds merging into one to convert this space into a safe haven. After four collaborations, we have found a space that reflects the idea of the world we would like to live in. It has helped us to push our boundaries, mediums and explore individually, and together.”

MATERIALS: Unglazed ceramic, Stoneware and porcelain, Copper wire and Sand.

DIMENSIONS: 4ft x 4ft x 12ft

This truly experiential installation engages all the human senses of the body, evoking varied emotions.

Suspended from the ceiling, these dagger-like needles appear as a source of anxiety, pain & non-acceptance. But as one approaches and moves within the installation, the soothing touch of the sand and the jingling of the needles that resonates within the space, create a calming effect.

The needle here is but a humble instrument that brings lives, people and cultures together.

Stitch by stitch I mend the damaged Stitch by stitch I create anew

When life seems hopeless How do I mend & redefine?

Filled with fear and denial I clutch on to a hope...a wish, For a metaphysical sign to reverse the situation ...

I don’t know why

As tears trickle down I hold on to my bundle of joy My special little grandson. Special he is...

As I walk on the soft soothing sand The needles brush against each other Creating a resonating sound Filling the space With a healing pulse‌

Oversized ceramic needles Casting dagger like shadows

Long and Short Thick and thin Suspended clusters, evenly spaced flowing forms and earthy shades...
