RUBNER, LEADER IN EUROPE FOR THE CONSTRUCTION OF LARGE TIMBER BUILDINGS Rubner Holzbau is the ideal partner to trust when building complex timber structures and projects of high architectural quality. The constant thrust towards innovation and our wide experience gained over decades of work have allowed our company to become the technological leader and specialist in the field of timber. Rubner Holzbau puts forward innovative solutions for: • glulam constructions • prefabricated roof and wall panels • cross-laminated timber panels or wood-andglass curtain wallings • complete building envelopes This wide range of products has allowed the company to create, all over the world, buildings characterised by a common denominator: supreme mastery in the use of timber - a value that is ac-
tively experienced by all our staff at the production facilities in Bressanone - Brixen, Calitri and Ober-Grafendorf, as also in our design and sales offices all over Europe. The passion for this raw material also emerges in the many types of projects we develop for public and private residential complexes: • industrial and commercial buildings • sports arenas and shopping centres • churches • congress and cultural centres • bridges • housing estate The yearly production by Rubner Holzbau amounts to 300,000 m2 of prefabricated roof and wall panels in solid wood, and 85,000 m3 of special glulam elements.

NATURALLY TIMBER ECOLOGICAL
AND SUSTAINABLE
Rubner Holzbau has been working for more than 70 years, at their three production facilities, with the most ecological and sustainable raw material there is in absolute: timber. We began to take this route in an era when the themes of sustainability, of bio-architecture and of quality guarantee for widely used products were not considered as fundamental requisites in the building trade. Timber is a renewable natural material that absorbs carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and hence contributes to protection of the environment and of our vital space. The extraordinary characteristics of the cellular structure of wood remain unchanged, including in semi-finished products such as glulam beams and of prefabricated roof and wall panels. Unlike competing materials, for which the characteristics of environ-
mental compatibility must be emphasised by the producer with costly marketing exercises and numerous advertising campaigns, Rubner Holzbau can use the money not invested in these activities to optimise the quality of their own products, of the production process and of the staff’s know how. By using local wood species and timber from forests managed with eco-sustainable criteria, by reduction of primary energy demand to a minimum, by recovery of production waste, by reduction of the CO 2 emissions and by an ever growing use of photovoltaic systems, Rubner Holzbau intends to give maximum priority to ecological principles at all levels, so as to actively contribute to the protection of our environment.

GLULAM HIGH-PERFORMANCE,
LONG LIFE
At the production sites of Rubner Holzbau glued laminated timber (glulam) has been produced for decades. Glulam has roughly the load-bearing capacity of steel at a much lower weight; it ensures a high level of fire protection and provides good earthquake resistance in comparison to solid wood constructions and also very good resistance against aggressive environments and media. Glulam holds great advantages when used in buildings with a high degree of prefabrication, it eliminates cold bridging and enables constructions using large spans while allowing aesthetically sophisticated designs. All this explains the increasing market share of glulam structures over concrete and steel structures.
In a fully automated and quality-assured production process industrially dried slats of spruce from our own sawmill are used to produce any types of individually shaped joists up to 50 metres in length which are cut to size on our CNCcontrolled trimming machines. Before production begins Rubner Holzbau can provide the complete CAD design ranging from simple structural systems to complex and long spanning truss constructions; alternatively we can provide construction kits based on design information provided by others. In each instance, the client determines the desired scope of services e.g. cutting and painting of joists, delivery and installation of steel parts, transport of prefabricated components and site assembly with our own qualified staff.

ROOF PANELS PREFABRICATED TO SIZE The modular construction method has been used by Rubner Holzbau for many decades. Our roof elements can be used to create high quality roof structures achieving the highest standards in terms of acoustic performance and fire resistance. At the same time they offer solutions in areas where a high degree of prefabrication is required to suit tight construction budgets and programs. The modular construction method provides a number of advantages for Clients. A free choice of undersides for every requirement (sound absorbing or insulating, etc.), a variety of build-ups in line with fire resistance classifications (REI 30, 60, 90) and a range of components such as dome lights, skylights and smoke extractors. In addi-
tion, prefabrication enables faster construction times, a high level of work safety on site through the reduction of assembly processes, and weather-independent installation. The controlled production environment in our factory ensures a consistent standard of quality and therefore provides the highest level of accuracy and security using tested and intelligent solutions. Every year around 300,000 m 2 of prefabricated roof elements measuring up to 18 metres in length and 3 metres in width (standard dimensions) are produced and processed using turn table machines and bridge-type CNC trimming machines.

WALL PANELS CUSTOMIZED PRODUCTION, HIGH LOAD-BEARING CAPACITY Due to the advantages of the efficient and sustainable modular construction method, timber is being used increasingly as a building material in walls and facades. The long-established design concept of Rubner Holzbau and the flexibility of build-ups with numerous options for external and internal surface finishes, with linings predominantly made of sheet material create almost unlimited possibilities. A distinction is made between storey-high wall elements for the storey by storey erection of multi-storey buildings and wall elements spanning across floors which are installed onto existing support structures. In addition to conventional projects in the industrial and commercial construction sector using simple and functional facades, more and more
projects receive individual and sustainable envelopes creating a wide range of design possibilities for architects and designers. Using the modular construction method, multi-storey residential offices or commercial buildings can be constructed quickly, be environmentally sustainable and energy-efficient and be tailored to individual or special requirements in order to create comfortable and positive living spaces. The economic advantage: by reducing the total wall thickness due to a combination of the insulating and structural properties of the components and the very high degree of prefabrication, resources, time and money can be saved during the implementation of projects.

CROSS-LAMINATED TIMBER PANELS MULTI-LAYER AND MASSIVE Cross-laminated timber is used as required in ceilings, walls and roofs consisting of spruce slats similar to glulam which are industrially dried to a moisture content of 12% (+/-2%) and checked with special scanners for compliance with the relevant strength class. For ecological reasons only timber from FSC- or PEFC-certified forests is processed. Cross-laminated timber usually consists of three to five layers of lamellae glued crosswise and flat to one another to achieve a blocking effect (multilayered variants available on request). This results in large-size solid wood panels with maximum dimensions 13 m length, 4 m width and 20 cm
thickness. The crosswise alignment of the layers prevents the timber from swelling and shrinking. In addition, the load bearing properties on all sides open up new applications in timber constructions. Rubner Holzbau provides the production and cutting of wall panels (including door and window cut-outs), ceiling panels (including staircase holes, ceiling recesses, chimney cut-outs) and panel joint connections (including rebated edges, shaped holes and covering boards) as well as special solutions.

WOOD-AND-GLASS CURTAIN WALLINGS LARGE
SIZES AND GREAT VARIETY
The design and engineering properties of timber when used in combination with glass and aluminium open up a whole range of architectural possibilities. The facade system, which is also suitable for very large concepts, ensures the implementation of the architect‘s aesthetic and detailed geometrical requirements, in both ecological and economic terms. The designs can be based on curtain walling facades using traditional transoms and mullions or on fully pre-assembled modular facades including insulated panels, window elements or external cladding. Transom and mullion facades made of timber and glass are noted for being extremely weath-
er-resistant and long-lasting, guaranteed by the use of tested sealing systems and materials that are specifically intended and optimised for use outdoors. Depending on the building’s requirements, the physical facade quality can be supplied up to passive house standard. Compliance with sound and fire protection regulations as well as the assurance of quality and design variety is guaranteed through the planning and execution provided entirely by Rubner Holzbau. The facade system offers a wide variety of applications, such as for office buildings, hospitals, schools, universities and commercial buildings.

BUILDING MAINTENANCE  VALUE
PRESERVATION
Rubner Holzbau not only supports projects through acceptance, but also provides maintenance for the assets it creates. The servicing and maintenance of buildings has long since been anchored in the various construction standards and therefore represents a modern industry practice. Experts know that this topic is particularly important in the context of sustainable investment. However, this awareness is often lacking in practical implementation.
Rubner Holzbau has set itself the goal of explaining the necessity of this service to developers and project managers, and thus to contribute to the long-term retention of value. So, in addition to verifying the officially prescribed safety features, Rubner Holzbau also offers its own regular safety check on the building systems as well as a standardised check of the building itself. A transparent cost-benefit analysis after the survey enables measures to be taken at an early stage, which secures cost savings over the long term.

Rubner Holzbau Calitri, Italy
Italy’s first glulam timber company – Holzbau S.p.A. – was established in Bressanone in 1974. Constant investment in the production technology, employee know-how and the close collaboration with universities, research institutions, technical creative planners and renowned architects quickly made the company the market leader in Italy. Over 175 people work at the location in Bressanone – including around 25 CAD engineers and structural engineers in the Project Service department.
Founded as Glöckel Holzbau more than 70 years ago, the company was already specialised in the production of glulam timber joists by the 1960s and in prefabricated roofing elements by the end of the 1980s. Three hundred employees, including around 20 CAD engineers and structural engineers, the largest and most modern production line in Europe for the production of structural roofing and wall elements, as well as its own tinsmith department specialising in roof coverings and facades have enabled the company to grow into the market leader for building envelopes in Austria.
Since 1991, Rubner Holzbau has operated the biggest centre for the planning and production of glulam timber constructions at Calitri in southern Italy, which grew out of the company Holzbau Sud. Fifty employees at the head office in Calitri and at the two branches in Avellino and Palermo – including around 15 CAD engineers and structural engineers – produce approx. 8,000 m3 of certified glulam timber each year.

LARGE TURN-KEY PROJECTS
PASSION FOR WOOD The Rubner family-managed Group is today one of the main European companies operating in the field of wood constructions. The company management, by now the third generation, has successfully realised their futuristic vision in the field of wood constructions and the evolutionary path has always been characterised by continuous growth and constant internationalisation. In all these years, the creed of the Group, PASSION FOR WOOD, has never failed. This same passion today still inspires the owner family represented by Stefan, Peter, Joachim and Alfred Rubner. Under the direction of Stefan Rubner, President of Rubner Holding, the Rubner Group today manages a business subdivided into five strategic sectors: wood industry, wood structures, large turn-key projects, wood homes and wood doors. Just as in an orchestra, the individual companies integrate in the Group to form a single great unit and fully develop their potentiality. The harmonious exchange between the various company sectors has allowed Rubner to reach the highest performance and to penetrate the market, becoming the specialist in the field of made-to-measure buildings in wood. The vertically integrated Rubner production range covers all the processes and operation phases, from raw materials to finished products.
The individual companies, part of the Group, each bring a wide range of experience and know-how, and their products satisfy the strictest quality requisites. These products range from sawn wood to pillar layer frame glue laminated, from panels in solid wood to glulam components or complex glulam structures, to doors and windows and homes and to large turn-key projects, all manufactured by the Group with full respect for environmental sustainability and with advanced technical methods, so as to give life to customised projects and solutions. The Rubner Group is based in Italy, Austria, Switzerland, Germany, Slovenia, France and Poland, with more than 1,500 staff, whose daily commitment to the valorisation of wood contributes to intensifying the importance of this natural and renewable raw material. Rubner creates comfortable living environments, but at the same time contributes, ever since company foundation more than 80 years ago, to the rational use of natural resources.
